Message from the President When our founder Father André Coindre walked the streets of Lyon in the 1820s, he witnessed a world reeling from the upheaval of the French Revolution. Religious institutes had been stripped of their properties, families were broken and scattered by the aftermath of the revolts, and prisons and almshouses were bulging with the dispossessed. The French were finding their way into a “new normal.” However strange the times were, God’s love and compassion were consistent.

Through grace-filled people like Father Coindre and Claudine Thevenet, inroads were made to save people from the conditions in which they lived, conditions that seemingly made life unbearable.

On Foundation Day this year, we celebrated what Ryan Gallagher described in his letter as a “virtual” Mass with our student body. This Mass, celebrated by Father Paul Hart ’70, was the initial experience of our year-long celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart: 1820 Lyon to 2020 New Orleans - a charism alive, a mission-focused and sharp, Brothers and lay partners devoted as ever to the evangelization of youth through education. Where there were once styluses for writing, we now have laptops; where there were once silk weaving looms for teaching a trade, we now have a college preparatory curriculum; where there were once young men

devoted to teaching God’s message as well as life skills, we now have Brothers and lay partners devoted to the formation of youth for good. Times have changed; obstacles have changed; opportunities have changed-- but they are all still present today, and they are all moments of grace and growth.

It’s easy to display values of generosity and kindness in times of peace and prosperity. But adversity tests our true mettle. How do we respond when faced with seemingly impossible and unending obstacles? With God’s grace, we respond as Father Coindre did: with compassion, effort, and a vision of a way forward, a way out. Our challenges may be different from France in the 1820s, but our hope, our faith in God, and our will to find solutions remain the same.

Thank you for your continued support of Brother Martin through your time, treasure, and talent. We especially thank you for your prayers. Father Coindre’s charism, the Brothers’ of the Sacred Heart educational tradition, and our desire to meet the needs of a changing world are 200 years young!

Message from the Principal As of this publication of Century II, we now find ourselves together on Elysian Fields Avenue as one school community. On Monday, October 12, 2020 we welcomed back our entire student body for the first time since Friday, March 13, 2020. For our new students - all of our 8th grade class of 2025, a number of our 9th grade class of 2024, and a handful of upperclassmen, October 12 marked the first time we had been united together under one roof - nearly seven months to the day that we were forced to move to remote learning last Spring.

Prior to October 12, we had been operating under a hybrid schedule of instruction that featured both face-to-face and remote learning. While we had not been physically together since last March, we have been bound together as a Crusader family in spirit, through prayer and faith, and in solidarity. We have walked together, and will continue to do so, with courage and trust.

And while we all face unprecedented obstacles in our lives - some known and others yet to be realized - the message to our students is that our reality is one filled with opportunity.

If you walked on campus today, you would see many signs pointing to our current reality: one way traffic signs, students and teachers donning face cloths, thermometer stations positioned at entrances, and partitions constructed to provide for static grouping, just to name a few. You would also see the hallmarks of our educational tradition as we continue to meet the needs of

our changing world through our steadfast commitment to providing religious values, pursuing academic excellence, and providing both friendly discipline and personal attention. Despite the obstacles that stand in our way, we have not slowed down in our holistic approach to education and the formation of the young people entrusted to our care. We’ve adapted in so many ways - extending the instructional day to ensure the standards of our curriculum are being met, live-streaming our monthly school-wide liturgies in every classroom to provide spiritual formation, collaborating weekly with Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in order to ensure that our extracurricular and athletic programs are implemented in a safe manner - all in an effort to ensure that our students are prepared academically, socially, and spiritually throughout their years as a Crusader student.

Through faith and bold action, our students, faculty, and staff continue to cultivate the legacy of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart - a legacy each of you helped forge at Cor Jesu, St. Aloysius, and Brother Martin. As a result, our students are well-rounded, faith-filled individuals who act with compassion and courage, just as our first Brothers did nearly 200 years ago.

Confidence in the future has come at a premium in recent months. Confidence in the future at Brother Martin High School, however, has never been stronger.

Kenny Spellman ’84, Don Garvey ’50, David Gallo ’77, Greg Rando ’77 and Ryan Gallagher ’00 The Brother Martin High School Board of Directors selects an alumnus who through his contributions to his profession and for his religious, civic, business, educational, and community involvement personifies the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Mr. J. Donald Garvey, St. Aloysius Class of 1950, was honored as our 2020 Alumnus of the Year at a Mass and ceremony held in midSeptember in the James B. Branton Chapel. Celebrating with Don were his wife, Marge, family, friends, and previous recipients.

Alumni and Advancement Director Kenny Spellman ’84 welcomed guests. Fr. Paul Hart ’70 celebrated Mass. Greg Rando ’77, Brother Martin President and David Gallo ’77, Chairman of the Brother Martin High School Board of Directors and our 2010 Alumnus of the Year recipient, then presented the award.

During his introduction, Rando stated, “Like our founder André Coindre, Don sees, he is filled with compassion, and he acts”. Don’s work at Brother Martin and in the community is often imitated, but never duplicated as he instills the values of the Catholic Church with our Crusaders for Life & Justice Team, leaving a lasting impact on their hearts and minds. He added, “Don, you have forever changed Brother Martin for the good. We are a better institution, school, community, and, most important, a family because of you.”

Dr. Tom Garvey ’40, Larry Garvey ’55, namesake of our current Office of Campus Ministry, and Judge Richard Garvey ’43. Don reflected on the sadness of seeing the St. Aloysius campus close in 1969, but relayed that when he first stepped on Brother Martin’s campus, he felt like he was coming home.

He saw many familiar faces and practices from his formative years as a student at St. Aloysius High School. During his time at Brother Martin, Don’s example of seeing, having compassion, and acting is constant through our Crusaders for Life, and he said, “ I am proud to be associated with our administration and faculty at Brother Martin that create young men for life.”

Brother Martin High School held its 51st commencement exercises on Friday, July 31, 2020, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church honoring the Class of 2020. The commencement celebrated 151 years of the presence of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. President Greg Rando ’77 and Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 conferred diplomas.

Graduation Mass Members of the Class of 2020 came together for Graduation Mass at St. Catherine of Siena in July. Brother Martin Chaplain Fr. Paul Hart ’70 was the Celebrant assisted by Deacon Andrew Sanchez ’03.

Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 provided a reflection. He noted at the end, “The truth is guys... you left us 70 days ago. You’ve already begun to make a life, but you haven’t truly left. You’re here with us tonight, and you’ll be with us for years to come. You’ve been moved to action by the Holy Spirit, but you haven’t ‘moved.’ My prayer for each of you tonight is that you continue to act with courage, confidence, and trust. Continue to be moved, but as Brother Martin Crusaders... I pray for you and our school community.”

Senior Lunch Members of the faculty and staff celebrated the Class of 2020 as they drove through the Backyard on their originally scheduled graduation date in May. As the seniors drove through, they were welcomed with smiles and ‘elbow bumps’ from coaches, faculty and staff. They also received their cap and gown, a goody bag with their first alumni t-shirt, and a steak and potato lunch prepared by Katie’s and Scot Craig ’80.

Six members of Brother Martin’s Class of 2021 were honored as National Merit Semifinalists. Ring Mass

The Class of 2021 gathered in the Conlin Gymnasium to celebrate their Ring Mass and ceremony in August. This event was the official start to a year full of senior celebrations. Our Crusaders were able to safely and joyfully receive their rings in the midst of all their classmates. Special thanks to all our administration, Campus Ministry, Chorus, and Ryan Quick ‘01 with Event Producers for making this a memorable and solemn Ring Mass.

Summer Reading To teach a love of reading and life long learning, Brother Martin’s Summer Reading Program emphasizes student choice and small group book discussions. Faculty members each chose a favorite book, and students could choose from over 65 titles, ranging from science fiction, sports, and business, to detective fiction. Students read the book over the summer and then participated in a small group book discussion with the teacher whose book they chose.

In September the bicentennial celebration of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart spanning three years was celebrated throughout the institute, The Liturgy included opening remarks from both the provincial of the province of the United States, Br. Ronald Hingle ’78, and the Superior General of

Hurricane Laura Donations Our school community worked together to collect a number of donations for our neighbors in Lake Charles who just recently experienced the devastation of Hurricane Laura. Crusaders collected a number of different household cleaners.

Hurricane Katrina Stories Eighth-grade students participated in “Hurricane Katrina Stories” in remembrance of the storm that made landfall 15 years ago. Over the course of two days, students were treated to guest speakers sharing their personal accounts from their lives in 2005. This coincides with the students’ reading of Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans by Don Brown and their participation in panels and activities in their English and World Geography classes.

Legacy Night

In October, Brother Martin opened its doors to welcome prospective seventh grade and eighth graders and their families to our 7th annual Legacy Night. This year, the evening was split into two sessions for guests to safely-distance and enjoy personal attention as well as having the opportunity to tour the campus.

Carlos Bogran ’99, Assistant Principal for Admissions and Kenny Spellman ’84, Advancement & Alumni Director, started the event in the Robert M. Conlin Gymnasium where they welcomed guests and shared their experiences and passion for Brother Martin. School administrators, faculty, staff, and students were on hand to greet guests and answer questions regarding academics, upcoming events, current affairs, etc.

Class of 2021 Treated to Raising Cane’s Lunch

The Class of 2021 enjoyed their first-quarter Senior Lunch sponsored by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association. Seniors were served fried chicken, greens, mash potatoes and Texas toast from Fiorella’s Cafe and Kelly Fiorella ’85 in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace.

Virtual Homecoming Pep Rally Student Council celebrated a virtual pep rally to get our students excited about the homecoming football game against Rummel. Our ‘CSPN High School Game Day’ was live streamed into the first period classrooms. During the pep rally, our 2020 Homecoming Court was presented with the traditional NJROTC sword arch and there were even some special guest interviews.

Music Fundamentals Members of the Brother Martin Fine Arts Department Mike Scorsone ‘67 SA, Kevin Caparotta ‘88, and David Joyner hosted a Jazz Recital, for our Fine Arts students, in the James B. Branton Chapel as a culmination of the first quarter curriculum presented during the newest course called Music Fundamentals.

National Honor Society Several senior members of the National Honor Society recently spoke to eighthgrade honors students in a panel format in the school’s auditorium. Each senior responded to a series of questions regarding their academic and extracurricular experiences in their five years at Brother Martin, all in an effort to provide practical advice to the young honors students.

Brother Martin Aquaculture and Herpetology Group (BMAHC) Brother Martin is excited to announce the successful breeding of gargoyle geckos on campus. The raising and breeding of various reptiles and fish species has been an exciting extension of the science curriculum at Brother Martin. Students who are involved in the Brother Martin Aquaculture and Herpetology group (BMAHC) are responsible for the maintenance and care of all living specimens found on campus.

Under the guidance of Mr. James Barbara, biology teacher and BMAHC moderator, these crusaders have successfully hatched 3 sets of offspring (6 babies in all) from the gargoyle gecko pair that is housed in a bioactive vivarium in the Meyer Building.

Football Brother Martin prevailed in a Catholic League thriller over Jesuit, 45-42 on October 10th at Hoss Memtsas Stadium.

Brother Martin’s Wrestling Program announced their 2020-2021 team leaders and team captains for the year. The team will be led by seniors Eli Hope ’21 and Ethan Castex ’21. Each student-athlete was voted for by their teammates.

“Richie Clementi ’25 and Rory Horvath ’25 are two 8th graders that have several years of experience. They are not only excelling on the mats, but already showing that they are the complete package by doing very well in the classroom. Richie has had a lot of national-level success and Rory is carrying on that hardworking reputation that his two older brothers, Riley ’20 and Rocco ’22, have developed.

Braden Hite ’24 and William Stumbo ’24 have been leading by example since they arrived on campus last year. Braden was also voted a Team Leader last year and his teammates still feel that he is a direct reflection of the expectations we have for our team. William Stumbo is also a very successful member of the Crusader Cross Country team and is an incredible studentathlete.

Austin Gonzales ’23 and Ty Duncan ’23 are two sophomores that put a lot of time into becoming better students of the sport. Gonzales is notorious for sticking around after practice to work on technique and even finds his way to the room while competing on the Crusader Cross Country team. Duncan got a late start to the sport, but has been developing quickly because of his work ethic.

Ryan Corca ’22, Rocco Horvath ’22, and Mason Elsensohn ’22 are part of a relatively small junior class. That is not stopping them from putting the time in to become better teammates and better wrestlers. Corca stays after every practice to help clean up. He also shows up regularly on mornings “off” to finetune technique. Horvath is known by all of his teammates as a hardworking student-athlete who simply loves the grind of the sport. Elsensohn may be the best athlete that we have in the room. He holds his partners to a high standard because he has big plans for himself as well as his team this year.

Johnny DiMaggio ’21 and Chase Scott ’21 have been around the Crusader Wrestling program for many years. More impressively than what they have accomplished on the mats, these two individuals are incredible studentathletes. DiMaggio is a natural leader, always offering younger guys assistance to get to practice and working with them individually. Scott is already a 2x State Place-winner and is very dedicated to climbing the podium.

Ethan Castex ’21 and Eli Hope ’21 have been voted as our 2020-21 Team Captains. Ethan is a 2x State Finalist and a 3x State Place-winner. Eli stepped up big wrestling up a weight class last season and earned his way to a 6th place finish in his first year in the starting lineup. Both student-athletes are members of the Student Council Executive Board here at Brother Martin; Castex is Parliamentarian and Hope is Secretary. I am excited for them to step up in these new leadership roles on our well-respected wrestling team.”

Homecoming 2020 Alumni, family and friends gathered for the annual Homecoming celebration and football game at Joe Yenni Stadium in late October. The Crusaders defeated Rummel 26-23 and moved to 3-0 on the season. At halftime, the Crusader Band took the field for their performance with the St. Mary’s Dominican High School Debs. After, the Homecoming Court was presented.

Larry Gibbs ’65 CJ Named 2021 Alumnus of the Year Lawrence C. “Larry” Gibbs, Cor Jesu Class of 1965, has been selected by the Brother Martin High School Board of Directors as the 2021 Alumnus of the Year. The announcement will Larry Gibbs speaking at be celebrated at the CGN Event annual Alumnus of the Year Cocktail Party in January followed by the Alumnus of the Year Mass and Lunch in March.

Larry and his wife Marian have supported the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Brother Martin High School in many ways over the years. They have provided students opportunity through scholarships and have assisted in advancing our institution through generous gifts to our capital campaigns since the mid-1990s. Larry has shared his time at Career Day and with the Crimson & Gold Network and most recently, he made a significant gift toward the dedication of Cor Jesu Hall.

Larry was born in Columbus, OH where his father was attending Ohio State University on the G.I. Bill after World War II. His family moved back to New Orleans when Larry was two years of age.

After graduating from Cor Jesu he earned a BS in Civil Engineering from LSU. Larry then worked for several engineering and construction companies

in Houston and the Greater New Orleans area.

Larry founded Gibbs Construction on July 4, 1976, with a $3000 bonus check received from his employer. Larry served as CEO and president of Gibbs Construction for 43 years, until retiring on July 4, 2019. Larry’s 43-year long career at Gibbs Construction was productive, wonderful, beautiful in every measurable and non-measurable way.

Larry is past chapter president and statewide president of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and served for many years on the ABC National Board of Directors. He is past vice president of the Construction Industry Legislative Council and is actively involved in lobbying for free enterprise and merit shop principles in the construction industry. Larry has twice received the Associated Builders & Contractors Member of the Year Award, in 1982, and 1992. His success was recognized in the business community with his election to the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame in 1994, and he was honored with the 1997 Louisiana Entrepreneur of the Year Award for construction. In 2000, he also received the Mayor’s Award for Commercial Contractor of the Year.

Larry’s community service includes the Board of Trustees and the Building Committee of St. Martin’s Episcopal School, member of the Loyola University Business School Visiting Committee, the board of directors of the New Orleans Job Initiative and the East Jefferson General Hospital’s Business and Professional Committee for Development. He is past education chairman and past chairman of

the Louisiana chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization, past member of the Jefferson Business Council, and a past member of the board of the New Orleans chapter of the ACE Mentor Program. He is an active member of the Chief Executive Organization. Larry presently serves on the Foundation Board for the New Orleans Recreation Department, and the Louisiana Workforce Investment Council. In addition, he proudly serves as President of Eastbank Little League program for youth in the New Orleans Metropolitan Area, whose 12-year-old baseball team earned the National and International Little League Championship in Williamsport, PA in 2019.

While never excelling in any athletic endeavor, Larry did run the 26.2 mile New York Marathon five times in five separate decades; including his 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, and intends to complete his third-to-last New York City Marathon in his early 80s.

Larry and his wife Marian like baseball, new adventures, general travel, and family life. Marian is an essential partner, and a loving mother to their children; she keeps the family moving in a positive direction, and significantly contributes to much of Larry’ personal success and the success of their family. Marian is involved in numerous educational institutions from pre-kindergarten to high school and numerous charitable and civic organizations and activities. They live in River Ridge and have eight children, whom are all doing well. The Gibbs Family is grateful and feel they are blessed.

Julia Gandolfi Retires Julia Gandolfi, has retired after 27 years of service at Brother Martin High School.

Julia served in many roles during her time on Elysian Fields. She worked in admissions before moving to advancement work where she worked closely with Bro. Jean Sobert, S.C. identifying and cultivating alumni. Later, she served as Community Relations Director and Capital Campaign Director. She is a founding member of the Ladies of the Shield and spearheaded that group’s fundraising and events. Her work with the Ladies of the Shield has resulted in a fullyendowed scholarship, significant donations to the Bro. Jean Sobert Endowment, unmatched community outreach to the ladies of our

Hunt. Most recently, Julia was the lead in the formation of our Legacy Committee whose mission is to increase planned gifts to the St. Aloysius Century Foundation.

“Julia was dedicated to her work and making Brother Martin a better place”, said long-time coworker Nick Lagattuta ’71.

“Julia has been an integral part of the success of our advancement work. She possesses a wealth of knowledge of our institute and our constituents.

The St. Aloysius Mothers’ Club A Historical Perspective of Women Supporting the Mission of Brothers of the Sacred Heart Over the years, we have chronicled alumni donating their time, talent and treasure to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Schools in New Orleans.

During that time, the Brothers also benefited from the contribution of women to the mission of the institute. In this article, we celebrate the St. Aloysius Mothers’ Club, a group of saintly women who were integral in assisting in the education of young men of New Orleans.

1931 Mothers’ Club

1951 Executive Board Mrs. Jules Sancho, Mrs. H.A. Pecunia, Mrs. Chris Schulingkamp, Mrs. Joseph McAdam, Mrs. Ray F.S. Piper, Mrs. F. Breedlove, Mrs. F. Madrazo and Rev. Brother Louis, S.C. In September of 1926, a group of twelve women met in the St. Aloysius school assembly hall and organized the first Mothers’ Club. Under the guidance of Reverend Brother Paul S.C., President of the school, a Constitution and By-Laws were written. The main objective of the organization was “To encourage Catholic boys to attend Catholic schools, and to boost St. Aloysius College in particular.” The mother’s adopted as their motto: Knowledge is strength.

Mrs. John Thomas was elected the first president of the group. During her term, her rallying call to other mothers was “a Mothers’ Club is an asset to a school!”

Mrs. A.L. Ducasse followed as the second president for the 1927 term. She worked to raise funds to purchase chairs to be used at benefit parties, two large American flags, and to defray the expense of an automobile that had been presented to Brother Paul by the Club.

Mrs. John Porte was elected the third president of the club. During her term, enrollment

increased to sixty-three members. The classrooms were painted, repairs were made to desks and chairs and benefit parties became a part of the work of the group.

Mrs. Joseph F. Staub, the mother of Brother Eugene, S.C., succeeded as the fourth president.

She served two terms, 1929-1931, and continued to raise funds to pay for the automobile.

In September 1931, Mrs. John Regus became the fifth president of the Club. She began a drive for an increase in membership at the request of school President Brother Lambert. His successor, Brother Martinian, began to work with the Mothers’ Club to furnish and enlarge the library. To this end, card parties were held in the homes of the members.

Boat rides, spaghetti dinners, and luncheons aided in raising funds. An operetta was presented by Aloysius students, and Mrs. Regus rehearsed the cast daily for six weeks.

At all times, Mrs. Regus had been assisted by Mrs. Rene J. Borgne, who succeeded her as the sixth president. Mrs. Regus remained as vice-president.

By this time, the Mothers’ Club had become a part of the school and was, indeed, the premiere extra-curricular organization. Brother Martinian only had to ask for what he needed, and, as if out of nowhere, his wishes were granted.

Brother Martinian asked that the Library Fund be completed, The Mothers’ Club held a festival and the debt was cleared. When Mrs. Borne presented the check to Brother, he immediately ordered the necessary volumes. Our library rose to an enviable position among those in southern high schools.

Suitable furniture was also purchased by the club.

Furthermore, as a result of two very successful benefits and festivals, two buses were donated to the school.

At this time, the football team was being recognized, so the Mothers’ Club inaugurated an annual Christmas banquet for the players and presented them with jackets and sweaters.

Knowing that a football team must have a band, the club sponsored the St. Aloysius Band under the direction of Professor Joseph H. Taverna and the care of Brother Maximin. Uniforms and instruments were furnished. Talented students were given scholarships by the club. Academic scholarships were awarded to deserving Catholic young men. 1965 Officers Mrs. Audrey Schellhaas, Mrs. Beverly Mahe, Mrs. Mary Brinker, Mrs. Delight Thompson, Mrs. Rita Gibbs and Mrs. Olga Reso The membership drive was still on, and Mrs. Borne invited all grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, and all interested in the welfare of the students and the Brothers to become members. At the end of the term, the Club boasted an enrollment of over two hundred members.

As the Club prospered, Brother Martinian began thinking of a gymnasium. This had been spoken of before but had always been set aside because of a lack of funds. Brother made this the major project of the school in the fall of 1936. With untiring efforts and perseverance, the Mothers’ Club and alumni worked enthusiastically toward the realization of the project. In November of 1937, The St. Aloysius Gym was dedicated by Most Reverend Archbishop Joseph F. Rummel. The mothers furnished the dressing room and kitchenette in the gym. The club also donated funds towards the collapsible stands which seat over one thousand fans.

In 1937, under Brother Lambert, the Mothers’ Club assisted in covering the yard with asphalt. Also, the Brother’s residence received new entrance steps, a renovated chapel, table linens, bed linen, blankets, and quilts. The Mothers’ Club donated the furniture for the 16 private rooms in the new annex between the gymnasium and the Brother’s Residence.

The Junior-Senior Prom. Senior Prom, Christmas Party for Mothers and Brothers, Picnic to Bay St. Louis, Athletic Banquet, and Band Picnic were all established during Mrs. Borne’s administration.

In September 1942, Mrs. Charles P. Wirth became president of the club. During this time

the Youth Movement had begun in the archdiocese. The Mothers’ Club sponsored skating parties, teenage dances, banquets, and parents’ and sons’ dances. When the war came, the club’s work expanded.

As mothers of sons in service, St. Aloysius Mother’s Club went over the top in assisting with the Bond Drive, scrap metal and paper drives, and all other drives assigned to the school. The mothers also formed a chain of communion - a group receiving every day- to pray for their sons overseas. They also assisted in defraying the cost of an entire remodel of the Provincial Administration building.

In November 1943, Brother Martin became President. The Mothers’ Club donated West Point style uniforms to the band. Brother Martin asked the organization to donate a $5,000 scholarship to the recently founded scholasticate in Daphne, Alabama. After a fair was held, the scholarship and a check for linens for the new house were given to Brother Martin. In the following autumn, Brother Martin requested a new bus to replace one that was too old for the boys’ safety. At the end of the year, the club had raised the funds. Brother Martin then asked the club to donate a stained glass window for the chapel in the new house of studies in Spring Hill, Alabama. The window was to depict the history of the coming of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. In 1949, a piano was donated

to the school of music. One of Mrs. Wirth’s last achievements was the compilation and approval of a new constitution which was more adapted to the greatly increased enrollment.

In May 1950 Mrs. Joseph McAdam was elected eighth president of the club. Membership had increased to a banner enrollment of 526.

During that year, the Club had purchased band instruments, vestments for the chapel, and completed payment of the stained glass window.

The Mothers’ Club continued to be successful and a staple of the community. In 1967, The Brothers decided to move in the direction of a Parents Club in lieu of a Mother’s Club. That tradition of Parents Club has continued to the present day.

For 40 years, the St. Aloysius Mothers’ Club helped make St. Aloysius the school it was. The Stainedglass window the Mothers’ Club donated can be found on the second floor of Cor Jesu Hall at Brother Martin. Giving Back Nancy and John Beninate II ’77 recently made a generous donation to the Marty Hurley Band Endowment in support of the Crusader Marching Band.

Corey Rosemond ’88 and Nacon Gaming USA donated RIG505 headsets for students, faculty, and staff to Brother Martin High School. Their donation gives students, faculty, and staff the tools to meet the needs of our changing world. The donation value is nearly $80,000. Corey is the Global Partnerships Director of RIG Gaming and Vice President of Nacon Gaming USA. He lives in Washington state and has participated in our Career Day. The Ladies of the Shield, formed in 2006, have established a scholarship in honor of their sons and/or husbands who are graduates of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu or Brother Martin. They also support Brother Martin High School and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart through continued involvement in the Brother Martin community. The Ladies of the Shield Scholarship was completed in July of 2013. Since the scholarship’s endowment, funds have been directed to the Brother Jean Sobert, S.C. Student Activities Endowment.

Most recently, funds raised by the Ladies of the Shield have been used to purchase risers for our Chorus and additional funds were used to renovate the reception area at the Elysian Fields entrance of school.

The Ladies of the Shield Endowment has been established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation to support Brother Martin High School. These are unrestricted funds to be used to meet the greatest needs of the school as deemed by the President and Principal.

The Marcel J. Damiens Family Foundation completed payment on its generous pledge to the Phase III Capital Campaign. The Marcel J. Damiens Family Foundation Food Station will stand in The Mall as a reminder of their generosity.

Tab Damiens ’76, Michelle Hennessey, Thomas d’Hemecourt ’95, and Norman Romagosa ’73 were instrumental in making this gift possible.

The Paul A. “Red” Pizzo ’41 Family Work-Study Scholarship has been established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation thanks to a generous gift from Debbie and Paul Pizzo ‘75. This scholarship will be awarded annually assisting students in our work/study program by rewarding them for excellence in service. The Pizzo family has a long legacy at St. Aloysius and Brother Martin.

The August R. Gallo Family has supported the Brothers of the Sacred Heart for decades. Recently, The Sonya and August Gallo ‘53 Foundation and Gallo Mechanical completed gifts to school that provide opportunities for students and enhance our campus. The Gallo legacy at St. Aloysius and Brother Martin go back decades and their support is greatly appreciated.

Class of 1970 “50 for 50” Check Presentation

Every Brother Martin class has been challenged after their 45-year reunion to raise $50,000 before their 50-year reunion. We recently received the initial check from the Class of 1970, “The Charter Class”. This establishes the Brother Martin Plus 50 Alumni Endowment in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation. These funds will be used at the discretion of the President and Principal to meet the greatest needs of the school. Currently, funds earned from this endowment will be used to assist families dealing with Covid-19 issues. The Class of 1970 raised over $60,000.

Wayne Lee, in his over 20-year relationship with Brother Martin, with his congenial manner and his “can do” attitude, was constantly behind the scenes contributing to a variety of school and alumni events. CajunFest, the Al Briede Race, Fish Fry, Alumnus of the Year, Leadership Celebration, and so many more, were successful in part due to Wayne’s contributions and tireless efforts.

“Wayne has always been here for us at Brother Martin. If we ever needed anything for the school, he would simply reply, “You got it!” He will always be a part of the Brother Martin Family,” said Director of Food Service Tina LaBeaud.

The Fr. Paul Hart ’70 Scholarship is now fully endowed. Fr. Paul, our school Chaplain, established the scholarship to afford young men an opportunity to experience life as a Brother Martin Crusader.

The Jay Michael Dixon ’02 Crusader Memorial Scholarship has been endowed. This scholarship annually provides direct financial assistance to needy Brother Martin High School students in the form of work-study grants and tuition reduction. This scholarship provides opportunity and was made possible through the generosity of Debbie Dixon.

The Erin V. and Joseph J. Caruso ’79 Scholarship has been established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation thanks to a generous gift from Erin and Joe Caruso ’79.

The following are endowments established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation to support Brother Martin High School.

Gibbs Family Endowment was established by Marian and Larry Gibbs ’65 CJ to support Brother Martin students in the tradition of academic excellence.

The Bellinger Family Endowment, In Honor of Thomas Bellinger ’39 was established in accordance with a bequest in his will to support technology, audio visual materials, textbooks, faculty and staff.

Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ Technology Endowment honoring Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ was established by Julie and Mike Flick ’66 SA in an area very important to the school, maintaining and enhancing our technology on campus and in the classroom.

Robert M. “Bob” Conlin Athletics Endowment honoring Bob Conlin was established in an area very important to Bob during his years at the school, maintaining and enhancing our athletic programs and athletic facilities.

Trey Culotta Memorial Fund was established by Dr. & Mrs. Vincent A. Culotta, Jr. in memory of their son Vincent A. “Trey” Culotta III ’97. The earnings from the fund are designated to support the Trey Culotta Wrestling Invitation Tournament, held each December, and the Brother Martin Crusader wrestling program.

Espinosa-DuRapau Endowment for Faculty & Staff Development was established by Victor J. DuRapau, Jr. Ph.D. ’58 CJ to provide financial support for Brother Martin teacher and staff development and continuing education.

Larry Garvey ’55 - Campus Ministry and Religion Endowment honoring Larry Garvey ’55, was established in two areas very important to Larry, Campus Ministry and Religion.

Brother Nicholas Geisenberg, S.C. Building Endowment honoring Brother Nicholas Geisenberg, S.C. was established by Gayle and Tom Benson ’44 in an area very important to Brother Nicholas during his years at the school, maintaining and enhancing our state-of-the-art facility.

Marty Hurley Band Endowment honoring Marty Hurley was established in an area most important to him during his years at the school, the instrumental music program.

Ricky Nuesslein Close-Up Endowment honoring Ricky Nuesslein, was established to support Brother Martin students who attend Close Up, an educational trip in January to Washington, D.C., that informs, inspires, and empowers young people to exercise the rights and accept the responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. A Civics teacher for over 30 years, this was something very important to Ricky.

Brother Jean Sobert, S.C. Student Activities Endowment honoring Brother Jean Sobert S.C., was established in an area very important to him during his years at the school, student activities.

Brother Martin Plus 50 Alumni Endowment honoring Brother Martin classes celebrating their 50-year anniversary was established to support Brother Martin High School. This endowment is used by the president and principal to meet the greatest needs of the school.

Robert Vasquez CJ and his wife, Cynthia, were selected to receive the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion for service to the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese for New Orleans. Johnny Vidacovich SA received the “Lifetime Achievement in Music Award” by the Big Easy Awards 2020. In his more than 50 years performing, has drummed with Professor Longhair, Charles Neville, George Porter Jr. and numerous others. He’s never missed a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival – until this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Johnny is a dedicated educator having taught at Loyola University New Orleans since 1982 and he still gives drum lessons. Stanton Moore ’90 counts him as a beloved mentor. Johnny released his latest album as a bandleader, “’Bout Time” earlier this year.

Douglas Beninate, after 16 years in commercial construction, ten in New Orleans, four in Virginia, and two at the University of North Carolina, has changed careers from commercial construction to North Carolina Building Code Enforcement. He started with the Town of Cary, NC, in January 1994 as a Senior Commercial Building Inspector until December 2000, when he was promoted to Chief Building Code Official. Douglas also retired from the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant in January 1994 after 20 years of service.

Mark Shreve before retiring as a Security Director in 2013, earned a certification by the Louisiana State Police as a Concealed Handgun Permit Instructor (#628). He is currently in his 9th year and has taught hundreds of students. Mark is not only a NRA Certified Pistol Instructor but is also a U.S.C.C.A. (United States Concealed Carry Association) Certified Instructor as well. Recently, Mark successfully completed the course to become a USCCA Certified Range Safety Officer. Rod Teamer, Director of Diversity Programs and Business Development for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, was recently elected board chairman of Marillac Community Health Centers dba DePaul Community Health Centers. Mike Gautreaux, PhD., Director of HLA/Immunogenetics and Immunodiagnostics Laboratories at Wake Forest Baptist Health, received the 2020 Distinguished Service Award from the The American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). Michael Hennessey joined the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Cash Product Office (CPO) as a Business Consultant. For the past 29 years, Michael worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Cash operation in the New Orleans branch. He has 21 years of analytical and project/product manager experience with the Sixth District’s Cash Function Office where he was responsible for technical and operational support, business continuity oversight, risk management, and Security Assurance for the Federal Reserve compliance.

Chito Martinez ’84, who was the first player from Belize to reach the MLB, was recently featured in an article on “The Ultimate Belize Bucket List” website.

Chito played for the Baltimore Orioles from 1991 to 1993 as an outfielder. He recorded a hit in his first six MLB games at the age of 25-years-old. The article states, “While many Belizeans proudly supported Chito during his time in the MLB, he didn’t hone his craft in his home nation. He attended high school in New Orleans, which provided him with an opportunity to showcase his sporting talent to the world.

As a result, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in Major League Baseball in 1984. He signed to Baltimore in 1990, hitting 13 home runs in his rookie season.”

Jacques Fontan, deceased Navy SEAL, inspired a book by his wife, Char Fontan Westfall. “A Beautiful Tragedy: A Navy SEAL Widow’s Permission to Grieve and a Prescription for Hope” is her story as one of the survivors of Operation Red Wings. The book is available on Amazon.

Nico Camero began graduate school at the University of Colorado Denver in the fall of 2017 where he traveled to study the architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design in Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. He was a member of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and a founding board member of AIAS CU Denver’s Freedom by Design program – a national, student-run program dedicated to providing small-scale, design-build projects to community members in need. In spring 2020, Nico earned a Master of Architecture degree and was awarded CU Denver’s Lynx Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership and dedication to serving the campus and Denver community. He also composed CU Denver’s first fight song. Since graduating high school, Nico has served aboard Disney Cruise Line as a Youth Activities Cast Member/Crew Member (Petty Officer), worked at Camp Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis as a Head Counselor and Program Developer in 2017 where he helped establish new traditions and reinvigorate the programming of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart-run camp as it re-emerged after Hurricane Katrina.

In the 4 years at USF, he has presented his Ph.D. research at 3 conferences on the use of calcined clays as cementitious materials, 2 of which were international in Quebec City, CN and New Delhi, IN. His research has been published in RILEM Bookseries, Vol. 25, “Calcined Clays for Sustainable Concrete.”

2014

Adam Laliberte has been selected as a member of the ABA Arbitration Competition team as a part of LSU Law’s external trial advocacy program. Via Zoom, he will be competing in a national mock trial competition against other schools.

Martin Aucoin has been named Vice Provost and Dean of Admissions at Belmont Abbey College, a Benedictine Liberal Arts College in Belmont, NC, a suburb of Charlotte. Martin holds a Master’s in Higher Education from Appalachian State University and a Bachelor’s in Government & Political Philosophy from Belmont Abbey College.

Anthony Jackson, Jr. has been elected to the Orleans Parish Democratic Executive Committee District E.

Michael Maldonado became a licensed attorney in the state of Louisiana in September and began as an associate attorney at the law firm of Staines, Eppling & Kenney, LLC. His practice primarily focuses on admiralty and maritime law, general casualty, and commercial automobile and trucking.

2015

Jack Buras graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from the College of Engineering. He is a proud alumnus of Sigma Nu Fraternity.

Chace Edwards graduated in Mechanical Engineering as a Distinguished Communicator from LSU. He became a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers his sophomore year and joined the Golf Tournament committee. Justin Landry has been named Greek Man of the Year by LSU Greek Life for his time serving as the Interfraternity Council President. Justin is now Civil Analyst at Kimley-Horn in Austin, TX.

2016

Cody Schaffer, a sophomore at Spring Hill College majoring in business, led the Badgers bowling team to the National College Sectionals quarterfinals before the season was canceled due to Covid virus lockdowns. Cody was chosen as one of the “Top Freshmen College Rookies of 2020”.

Ahmad Wilson, sophomore at Xavier University of Louisiana, was named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week in men’s cross country for Oct. 12-18.

Tony Suarez has been named the Band Director for Tioga High School in the Greater Alexandria area.

Benjamin Buller has been named the Band Director for Alexandria Senior High School in Alexandria, LA Dominique Lousteau has been hired by Central Lafourche High School as an Algebra II teacher.

2017

Jacob Detiege graduated Summa Cum Laude in Political Science from Millsaps College this past May. He received a full scholarship to attend Brandeis University and is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Politics program.

2020

Carson Scott and Emmanuel Levy were awarded scholarships by the Elks Lodge No. 30 in Metairie and the Louisiana Elks Association. They were two of twelve local students rewarded for their academic excellence.

Riku Okawauchi ’20, Cory McGehee ’20, and Charles Blanchard ’20 made the LSU Tiger Band for 2020-2021.

Robbie McDonald has been named one of Univerity of Southern Miss’ Outstanding Freshmen of the Year Finalists. He was chosen out of more than 150 applicants. Finalists are selected on academic excellence and student involvement. These students represent the top 1% of the Freshmen class.

Robbie has a double major in Interior Design and French.

Class of 1955 Lunch Members of the classes of 1972 and 1973 gathered for a golf outing in October at Oak Harbor Golf Club in Slidell. Alumni enjoyed a round of golf followed by dinner in the clubhouse.

The Class of 1973, one of our most active classes, has endowed two scholarships in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation. For over 10 years they sponsored, prepared and served food at our annual Fishing Rodeo.

They are always a strong presence at many of our events including our Seafood Dinner. They gather quarterly for a class lunch. The Class of 1972 is in the middle of a very successful “50 for 50” campaign as they head toward their $50,000 goal before their 50-year reunion.

Tr ack Stars of the 1930s

St. Aloysius excelled in track long before rising to the top in football.

Heading into the 1932 track season, Coach Earl W. Jones expressed optimism. “In the past few years, Aloysius has not been so successful in this sport, but this year the Panther spikemen are conditioning themselves Football Relay Team - Fabian Wambsgans ’34, Leonard for a great victory.

Estorage ’32, Mark Terrell ’32 and Edward Daigle ’34 They have already proven that they will be strong contenders for the Prep title by the remarkable showing at the Tulane Interscholastic meet and the State Rally.”

The school’s first track star was Eddie Daigle ’34, who was also outstanding on the gridiron. At the 1932 state meet, Eddie tied for most points scored. He equaled the 100y dash record of 9.9 seconds set by his older brother Tom for Jesuit. Eddie also won the 220y dash in a time of 23.5 seconds.

The following year, the Panthers fielded “the strongest, fastest, and best balanced team that the school has ever produced.” In addition to being considered “the fastest high school sprinter in Louisiana,” Daigle was expected to score points in the discus. Norman Ballatin ’34 was also counted on to score in the discus and the shot put as well. The relay team of Daigle, Al Liska ’35, Fabian Wambsgans ’34, and Jack Smythe ’35 ranked as favorites in the relays. One of the events at the time was a quarter mile relay in which a football was carried in place of a baton.

Daigle and Ballatin participated in the Southwestern College and High School Track Meet in Lafayette. The two athletes accumulated enough points to garner second place for Aloysius among the high schools.

The team suffered a setback when the car driven by Coach Jones with four track members as passengers was involved in a serious accident on the way to Baton Rouge for the State Rally. The car was rounding a sharp turn when the front wheels locked. A truck traveling toward New Orleans swerved in an attempt to avoid the crash but collided head-on with the auto. Both vehicles were damaged. Jones was brought to Hotel Dieu in New Orleans where he regained consciousness three hours after the accident. He suffered a concussion and lacerations on his arms. Jones’s passengers, Daigle, Ballatin, Wambsgans, and Leo Wegmann, continued to Baton Rouge and competed in the meet.

Daigle’s chief rival was Eddie Toribio of Jesuit who, like Daigle, was also an outstanding tailback. Toribio won both the 100 and 220 at the state meet, setting a record of 9.8 seconds in the 100. He ran the 220 in 21.0 seconds, but meet officials refused to recognize the time as a new record because the wind was blowing too hard.

Two weeks later, Aloysius and Jesuit staged their annual dual meet at Loyola Stadium. Daigle ran a 9.9 in the 100 to beat Toribio by 2’ and also edged the Blue Jay great by a foot in the 220 in a time of 22.0. It was the first time Daigle ever beat Toribio, and the first defeat the Jesuit star ever suffered in the 100y dash.

Toribio would become head football coach at St. Aloysius in 1949 and lead the Crusaders to their first prep gridiron championship in 1952.

Veglia Track prospects looked bright for 1934 despite Daigle having used up his eligibility. In the annual dual meet with the Blue Jays, Ballatin set a new record of 49’4” in the shot put. He shattered the state meet record in the discus with a throw of 130’ 9.1” which bettered by almost 11’ the previous mark set by his brother Eddie.

Big Norman’s shot put of 49’ 3 ¾” also copped first place.

Al Liska ’35, “the sensation of the year,” won the 220 in 23 seconds, leading the field by almost 10y.

Ballatin, “the prep, state, and national champion in the discus and shot put,” was at Notre Dame in 1935. But Aloysius got a break when Warren Clague of Commercial High (later renamed S. J. Peters), the Southern A.A.U. Norman Ballatin, sprint champion known as the “Dixie Flyer,” transferred State Champion in the to Esplanade and Rampart in order to acquire the discus and shot put necessary credits to enter Loyola University the next fall.

But Clague’s contribution would prove to be disappointing.

Liska was expected to score points in the 100 and 220, but a newspaper account of the state rally included this passage: “A surprise came when Al Liska, crack dash man of St. Aloysius of New Orleans, who placed right in the money in the rally last Al Liska Coach E. W. Jones year and was expected to push Gene Davis of Baton Rouge and Brown of Baker this weekend, failed to enter. It was reported that Liska has an outside job which is taking up too much of his time, taking him from the track.” As a result, Aloysius did not score a single point in the state rally.

A month later, Liska ran in the A.A.U. meet in New Orleans where he led Tulane sprinter Herman Neugass until the last few yards. Neugass had to tie the world record time of 9.4 seconds to win.

Track fell off precipitously the remainder of the decade, with St. Aloysius not even fielding a team in 1938 and 1939.

In Memoriam Victoria Dolores Fountain “Del” Materne passed away on August 26, 2020. Del was a beloved member of the Brother Martin High School Administration from 1973 to 1997. Del was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter. She is survived by her two sons, Mike Materne ’71 (Denise) and Steve Materne ’73 (Gayle), and many grandchildren, grandnieces and nephews.

The first use of the phrase “ ’Round the Bend” in our publications dates back to 1951 in The Aloysian, the St. Aloysius student newspaper. “ ’Round the Bend” was a common colloquialism in the New Orleans area describing future events in the city.

In 1969, The Martin Crusader, Brother Martin’s student newspaper, adopted the phrase in its inaugural publication.

Then in 1990, to honor our student publications, the Century II changed their upcoming events list to “’Round the Bend”.
