Message from the President The Brother Martin High School Leadership, Faculty, and Staff are thinking of all of you at this time of uncertainty.

We face a health crisis unlike any other in our nation’s recent history, and for many of us, there is anxiety and fear.

an opportunity to show us at our strongest--united, focused, and grateful for all that we have. And we are blessed with abundance at Brother Martin--an abundance of commitment to the mission, an abundance of love and support for our school, and an abundance of prayers.

At Brother Martin, the hallways are silent, the classrooms empty. The Branton Chapel awaits a community coming together to share in the Eucharist. The Conlin Gym sits waiting for athletes, musicians, and cheering fans. And the Benson Mall, backyard, and Farley Field await the noise of young men interacting and socializing together.

Please know that all is well back at Brother Martin. Our school has already been cleaned and sanitized and will be disinfected again before we invite students back to campus. Our teachers are leading students with both academic rigor and compassion through their spring semester course work. Our boards are meeting virtually to ensure the continued smooth operation of our school. The administration is planning special ways to commemorate our seniors, who have lost so much this spring. Our finance office is working with families to help them get through financial challenges caused by the stay-at-home order and the closing of businesses. And our Campus Ministry Team is making sure to keep us connected to each other and to God through prayer.

Despite the silence and emptiness on campus, Brother Martin’s mission is still very much alive and active. The work is just not taking place on campus right now. Rather, it’s taking place remotely, through the great efforts of our faculty in leading our Crusaders through distance learning. It’s taking place in our daily prayers. And it’s taking place in our staying home so we can protect the greater good.

We are so grateful for your continued support. As you work at home with your own personal and professional priorities--the safety of your family utmost in all of our minds and hearts--please know that the Brother Martin, Cor Jesu or St. Aloysius you have known, relied on, and loved is still here, ready to form young men in Christ’s gospel message and in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart “to meet the needs of a changing world.”

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart and their lay partners have weathered many storms, both literal and figurative. From its rocky inception in 1821 in Lyon, France, we know how to persevere, to troubleshoot, to adapt, to change, to survive, indeed, to thrive. This pandemic, while profound and unsettling, is

Message from the Principal “Well then, our God needs soldiers who can endure the weariness of the day-to-day even more than He needs contemplatives who only honor Him with their lips! Sword in hand, zeal for His glory, a desire to save, to teach, to edify one’s neighbor, this is what our God loves above all.” (Father André Coindre, May 15, 1823) I hope this note finds each of you safe and healthy. I wrote the first draft of this letter on a Monday in April from my office at school, alone, surrounded by nothing but an empty campus. And I revised this letter on a Tuesday at midmorning from my dining room table. In both cases, I should have been walking around the campus of Brother Martin High School, interacting with students and engaging with faculty as we continued the work of forming young men for life. Instead, I’ve attempted to do this, along with my colleagues, mostly from my home over the final nine weeks of this school year.

The circumstances in which our school community finds itself today were truly unfathomable just a few weeks and months ago as we took 3rd quarter exams, began participating in LHSAA and Club spring sports, marched in Mardi Gras parades, and looked with eagerness towards the events that serve as annual hallmarks of a school year at Brother Martin like Graduation Mass, Graduation, and the Leadership Celebration.

I am proud of our students, faculty, school leadership, and administration, for the ways in which we have united as a school community during these unsettling and unprecedented times. We moved to a remote learning platform on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, just days after our campus officially closed.

Blessed with the professional faculty and staff and the technological capabilities to continue to provide a disciplined, meaningful learning environment outside of our own classrooms on Elysian Fields, we have created a sanctuary from afar for our students, one that is compassionate and flexible while continuing to forge a path toward servant leadership, academic excellence, and self-discipline, all with bold creativity and innovation. So while remote learning and instruction are certainly not optimal, it has been our reality in our final nine weeks as we strive to meet the needs of our changing world.

As the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart wrote to his fellow brothers nearly 200 years ago, we need men and women of action who are willing to carry forth the mission even in the most uncertain of times. Without question, we have that today at Brother Martin. The commitment of our students and faculty to the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the expression of solidarity from our entire Brother Martin community has left me inspired. With courage and trust we continue the mission of Brother Martin High School and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Campus News Wrestling State Champions Our wrestling team claimed its 20th state wrestling title, holding off St. Paul’s 242-236.5 to claim its third state championship in a row and the eighth in the last nine years for the Crusaders. It was the first championship for first-year coach Andrew Nicola.

Brother Martin had five finalists and won two individual state champions in seniors Connor Hoffman ’20 at 132 pounds and Alex Duncan ’20 at 145 pounds as both won their second individual state titles.

The Junior Varsity and Junior High Teams won State Championships, also. The Junior Varsity team won by 33 points over St. Paul’s led by Dylan Moser ’22, Ty Duncan ’23, Sean Michael Cursain ’21, Campbell Viles ’20, Rocco Horvath ’22, Luke Ohler ’22, and Kolbe Landry ’20 who all captured individual State Championships.

The Junior High team had an incredible performance as they won the State Championship by defeating the returning champs by 168 points. The team was highlighted by 11 finalists with Jacob Elsensohn ’24, William Stumbo ’24, Austin Gonzales ’23, Sam Riles ’23, Nicolas Malek ’23, Evan Huling ’23, Micah Barcelona ’23 and James Noonan ’23 all winning individual State Championships.

Cheerleaders - National Champions The Brother Martin cheerleading program won the UCA High School National Championship on Saturday, February 8, in Orlando, FL. This is Brother Martin’s Cheerleading program’s first national championship title in the school’s history.

Athletics Basketball T.J. Small ’20 was selected to the 2020 LHSCA/LHSBCA East All-Star Basketball Team. T.J. has accepted an appointment to the United States Army Academy at West Point and will play basketball there next season.

Bowling For the seventh consecutive year, Brother Martin’s bowling team has gone through the regular season undefeated. The Crusaders finished the regular season 12-0. Coach Bruce Himbert ’78 was named the 2018-2019 LHSAA Boys Bowling Coach of the Year.

The Culinary Crusaders took a sausage-making class at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum to learn the basics of sausage making, all in an effort to better perfect their infamous ‘smoked sausage sliders.

The Brother Martin CyberPatriot teams completed their 2019-2020 season with strong finishes in each round of the cybersecurity competition. The National Youth Cyber Defense Competition challenges students to find and fix computer and network security vulnerabilities through a series of online rounds.

For the fifth year in a row, Brother Martin’s CyberPatriot teams in both the Open and All-Service Divisions advanced to the Semifinal Round. The Open Division team finished first from Louisiana in December’s State Round and first from Louisiana in the Semifinal Round. The All Service team finished first from Louisiana and from NJROTC Area Eight in both the State Round and the Semifinal Round. The team ranked seventh in the NJROTC category in both rounds. They moved up from 64th place in the State Round to #23 in a field of more than 1,100 teams worldwide.

National Merit Finalists Emmanuel Levy ’20 and Jarrod Lowe ’20 have been honored as National Merit Finalists. They have been recognized for their masterful Academic Excellence, in addition to superior performance on the PSAT exam.

Matthew Lewis ’24 won the annual 8th Grade ‘GeoBee’ and moved on to be named a semifinalist to compete in the 2020 National Geographic GeoBee state competition.

Unfortunately, the geobee was cancelled.

Campus Father-Son Senior Dinner & Game Night

The Class of 2020 along with their ‘Crusader Dads’ attended the annual Senior Father-Son Dinner & Game Night in early February. Seniors and their dads joined together for a fun-filled night with great company, food, and activities.

The evening began in the Mall with a prayer service followed by dinner and dessert. A photo contest to match seniors with a picture of their dad as a high school senior, a volleyball tournament in the Conlin Gym, open-play ping pong on the mezzanine, free-play basketball and rounds of trivia in the Mall provided great competition and fun.

The Brother Martin school community celebrated our annual Social Justice Liturgy in the Conlin Gym in mid-February. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Paul Hart ’70, Brother Martin Chaplain. As we gathered to celebrate our social justice liturgy, we honored those in our community who are true Crusaders for social justice and remembered those who have given us the perfect model to live a selfless life. Our school’s leading examples of Crusaders for Social Justice are Father André Coindre, Brother Collin Dugas, S.C., and Mrs. Judy Stewart.

After Mass, Mr. Matthew Stevens, moderator of the Crusaders for Life & Justice, presented the awards. Receiving the Judy Stewart Social Justice Awards were Brad Corcoran ’20, Thomas ‘TJ’ Burgess ’20, and Aidan Gibson ’20. All seniors, nominated for this award by their classmates, are caring and selfless students who embody the ideals of our Charism and social justice. The members of the Brother Martin faculty and staff who received the Brother Collin Dugas, S.C. awards were Drew Haro ’03, Carroll Bourlet ’65 CJ, and Kervin Simmons. These individuals were honored for their unselfish commitment to the betterment of our school and were selected as the recipients by their colleagues.

In celebration of National School Counselors Week, Brother Martin spotlighted our Guidance Office to showcase all of the contributions and work that our counselors do in and around campus. Our counselors all range in their expertise and specialties, but we would be nowhere without them.

The Alumni Association hosted the 3rd Quarter Senior Lunch. The lunch, held in early March in The Terrace, was a chance for the seniors to gather and enjoy a meal together before exam week. Volunteers, faculty, and staff ensured a great experience. Seniors were treated to spaghetti, meatballs, salad, and bread from Cafe 615. During lunch, Advancement and Alumni Director Kenny Spellman ’84 spoke to the seniors about finishing strong in the last few weeks of their senior year. He encouraged them to make their parents and teachers proud while taking pride in their own achievements. Members of Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Board also attended and answered questions about life in the business arena and stressed the importance of staying in touch with Brother Martin High School.

Campus News Remote Campus At the beginning of this semester, we began praying Our Family Prayer written by Archbishop Aymond on the First Friday of each month and praying our school prayer on the other Fridays of the month. Junior Student Minister, Nick Lemoine prayed our family prayer on the first remote learning day.

Mr. Tommy Thibodeaux ’07 and his English III students started the week with a live conference about Emily Dickinson.

Our #CrusaderConnection is strong even when apart.

Mr. Franklin’s AP Art History class enjoyed a surprise appearance from “Professor Red Bean” during their live conference.

Teaching and learning from home certainly has its perks.

Gerald Ursin ’07 and Tom Baier conducted the Stations of the Cross “live” from Brother Martin’s Branton Chapel on Friday, March 20th.

The Navy Junior ROTC at Brother Martin High School in New Orleans is doing its part to uplift health care workers during the COVID-19 outbreak. The ROTC members wrote letters filled with positive messages for the health care workers. The letters were sent to New Orleans area hospitals.

The Crusader Wrestling team has been training hard since winning the LHSAA D1 State Championship in February. They have been finding creative ways to challenge each other.”

After reading Macbeth, Seniors in Mrs. Newburger’s English class were challenged to put their individual experience, during remote learning, into a haiku.

Even while apart, Our Class of 2020 was able to celebrate their Senior MotherSon prayer service and dinner at home together.

Numerous alumni and members of the Brother Martin community have assisted in the effort to combat the pandemic.

We would like to thank you all. Please send us your story so we can share.

Najy Masri ’94, besides working on the front lines as Chief of Staff at Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, has provided insight on the epidemic in a series of interviews on social media and network television.

Staff at Brother Martin High School made special attachments for medical masks that make wearing the equipment much more comfortable on first responders’ ears. The masks were irritating their ears from constantly wearing them. Teachers at Brother Martin were contacted by first responders to make the attachments, called “mask extenders.” They’re being produced using special 3-D printers at the high school. Brother Martin has donated about 70 to East Jefferson Hospital and another 80 to other area hospitals. “We’re happy to help when we can,” said science teacher David Jouandot II, Ph.D. ’03. “We’re very blessed at Brother Martin as a science department to be very well stocked with equipment... 3-D printing is a very big push toward the future of technology.”

The school is now working to fill requests for another hundred extenders to go to East Jefferson Hospital, Children’s Hospital and Chateau de Notre Dame senior care facility.

Fr. Paul Hart ’70, Chaplain at Brother Martin, has kept our spirits nourished by sharing scripture and insight as to how to cope with the challenges we face.

Warde Manuel ’86, University of Michigan Athletic Director, voluntarily took a pay reduction amid the pandemic to assist with university budget challenges.

Justin Hartenstein ’99 Oracle Lighting has donated over 1,000 N95 respirators and hundreds of surgical masks to local New Orleans area hospitals in need of PPE. Dolph Federico ’86 and Benny Burst ’81 have been manufacturing PPE face shields. Scott Walker ’93 put together a program to help them donate shields and raise funds to continue the mission.

Scot Craig ’80, Katie’s and Francesca’s, have been feeding heathcare workers around the city.

Anthony Jackson Jr. ’14, with Jay H. Banks and Tiffaney Bradley at Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana, volunteered and feed over 500 families and they encouraged all citizens of Lousiana due to Covid-19 to please follow the government mandated regulations.

Mark Benedetto ’77 and Caffe Latte Da made an impact in our community by providing breakfast to 100 hospital staff at River Oaks Hospital during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Dean Pigéon ’06, Pigeon’s Caterers, has been serving meals at St. Catherine’s and serving healthcare workers.

DJ Augustin ’06 has generously donated to local groups including the Krewe of Red Beans that provided food for frontline hospital workers who are treating patients with COVID-19.

Paul Schulz ’03, Mr. Rooter Plumbing of New Orleans, delivered Fat Boy’s Pizza to healthcare workers at West Jefferson Medical Center.

Lambert ’98 Receives Brother More Schaefer Award

Greg Rando ’77, David Gallo ’77, Matt Lambert ’98 and Ryan Gallagher ’00 The Brother Martin faculty and staff joined together for the 29th annual Brother More Schaefer Recognition Ceremony held at the Hampton Inn & Suites in early February. Matt Lambert ’98 was recognized as this year’s Brother More Schaefer Faculty Award recipient. Brother More Schaefer, S.C., ’55 who was known as Master Educator, served in various roles during his vocation at Brother Martin High School. In whatever place and in whatever position he served, he was always thorough, professional, challenging and concerned.

In a word, he loved. Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 stated, “Matt is the embodiment of excellence in Instruction, Formation, and Witness- just like Brother More- and yet all in his own way.” Matt, who joined Brother Martin in 2004 and holds a bachelor’s degree

in Marketing from Louisiana State University, educates our young men with dynamism and fidelity in and out of the classroom while embracing the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and their Partners in Mission. “Teaching and coaching are what I love to do and it is all about being a TEAM and FAMILY,” said Lambert. He also articulated that “people give of themselves here at Brother Martin every day for one another while pulling in the same direction for a common goal.”

In addition, Jim Casadaban, Sr. ’79 was recognized as this year’s Founders Medal recipient and is an example of excellence at our school.

Jim is currently the head coach for our Crusader Wrestling Club and a longtime supporter of Brother Martin High School since his time as a student.

Several faculty members were recognized for their years of service at Brother Martin. Those honored for 20 years of service were Bro. Neri Falgout, S.C. ’46, Judy Rodriguez, and Melanie Williams. The faculty members recognized for 30 years of service were Steve Ricks, Mark Wisniewski ’81 and Bob Masson ’63 CJ. Lastly, Barry Hebert ’74 was recognized for his outstanding 40 years of service.

Crimson & Gold Network Jeremy Mipro ’03, Vice President at Wells Fargo Bank, spoke to seniors about the importance of financial literacy. He touched on subjects like credit cards, credit scores, student loans, mortgages, escrow, and much more. Seniors learned the reality of how loans and credit can be a helpful or hurtful part of adulthood. We hope all of our students took away something from this financial literacy presentation as they approach graduation.

Augustin ’06 Jersey Retired D.J. Augustin ’06, Orlando Magic point guard, visited New Orleans in mid-December not just to face off against the New Orleans Pelicans but to come back home where he was honored with a jersey retirement ceremony. D.J. is the first Crusader to officially have his jersey retired.

During halftime, President Greg Rando ’77, Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00, Athletic Director Mark Wisniewski ’81, former Athletic Director Barry Hebert ’74, Advancement and Alumni Director Kenny Spellman ’84, spectators, as well as the Conlin Crazies, took a moment to watch the unveiling of the retired No. 14 jersey that now hangs in the Robert M. Conlin Gymnasium.

D.J. was elated as he celebrated with his family, friends, former coaches and teammates, and his Orlando Magic teammates and personnel, who surprised D.J. with their attendance at the event.

The Augustin Family

“Tonight was just a special, amazing time. I had everybody that I love and all the support that I’ve had over the years here to support me and be here for me in this special moment. My wife, my kids, my mom, my dad, my sisters, everybody. It was just a special night. I’m super honored and excited that my jersey will be in that gym forever” said D.J. D.J. scored 2,249 points during his high school career and led the Crusaders to three consecutive state finals and two state championships. In 2004 and 2005, he was named to the All-District and All-State teams, as well as being named TimesPicayune New Orleans Player of the Year. In 2006, he was a McDonald’s All-American as well as a Parade Magazine High School All-American.

D.J. transitioned from Brother Martin to a stellar collegiate career at the University of Texas and then onto the NBA, where he was the 9th overall pick in 2008 for the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets). Since 2008, he has played for multiple NBA teams and now is a veteran presence for the Orlando Magic.

“This was a special night for Brother Martin High School. D.J. did so much for our school as a student, and he continues to do so as an alum. He has given back since the day he first stepped foot on campus, and we are honored as an institution to be able to recognize him and thank him for our special relationship. He’s a great basketball player, but that is not really what tonight is about. D.J. is a wonderful model for our student body and the 14  Century II

Wrestling Reunion Members of the Brother Martin Wrestling community gathered for the Trey Culotta Invitational and reunion in late December. After the Crusaders victory in the tournament, alumni and friends enjoyed complimentary food and soft drinks at Mick’s in Mid City. Five decades of winning tradition shared stories over food and refreshments while the 1985 and 2015 anniversary State Championship teams were celebrated.

Kenny Spellman ’84 and Chuck Stall ’02 were on hand to discuss the latest happenings on campus especially the recent improvements to the Conlin Gym. Several of the varsity coaching staff were also on hand and visiting with guests including 1st year head coach, Andrew Nicola.

Alumni Basketball Game

The annual Alumni Basketball Game was held in January in the Conlin Gym. Team Crimson, led by Coach Bill Gallagher ’71, defeated Team Gold, led by Coach Mike Lemmon. Dante Butler ’11 won the 3-point contest and Milton Dureau ’69 CJ and Jeff Hotard ’07 officiated. The event was sponsored by Scott Lanoux ’77.

Rugby Reunion

Members of the Crusader Rugby community gathered for the annual touch game and reunion in early January. The touch game was played at City Park where in between halves, the alumni would “coach up” the current team and instruct them on how to better execute their game plan. This year

the students proved to be formidable against their more experienced opponents, yet fell short of victory.

Coach Gary Geipart ’80 addressed both squads after the game and stressed the importance of

getting better together. Alumni Officer Chuck Stall ’02 updated the attendees on happenings at Brother Martin and invited the alumni to a social at Mick’s on Bienville. The Crusaders look to improve on their 3rd place finish in the state playoffs last season.

Trivia X Champions, The Mallers The Alumni Association hosted Trivia Night X in the Tom & Gayle Benson Mall in late December.

Alumni Highlight Warren Reuther ’59 CJ christened the 3,000 passenger Riverboat Louis Armstrong in December. It was the crowning achievement of an almost 50-year career as a visionary leader in the tourism industry. Warren owns Hospitality Enterprises and Big Easy.com and employs more than 500 people and currently operates

a diverse array of interrelated businesses including hotels, restaurants and convention facilities in Natchez, Mississippi; Natchitoches, Louisiana; and Playa Del Carmen, Mexico; the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen; New Orleans Tours; On the Town Concierge; Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours; Destination New Orleans Management Inc.; New Orleans Airport Shuttle; and Hop On Hop Off New Orleans. Warren is recognized as the dean of New Orleans tourism, having served 10 years as chairman of the Morial Convention Center and 12 years as chairman of the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau, now New Orleans & Co.

Alumni In The News 1949

Chief Justice Pascal F. Calogero, Jr. was posthumously honored by having the Louisiana Supreme Court named after him. Chief Justice Calogero retired in 2008 after 36 years serving as a Justice of the Court. For 18 of those years, he served as Chief Justice. During his career, he spearheaded the restoration and return of the Louisiana Supreme Court to Royal street in the French Quarter.

Chief Justice Calogero died in 2018.

1951

Lt. Col. Robert Hippler Ret. USAF graduated from Tulane School of Engineering 1955 and from Pilot Training USAF in 1956. He spent 22 years in the Air Force, including 185 combat missions in Vietnam. He and his wife and are active with St. Michaels Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida where they live.

Marc Mouton is the writer/producer/director/composer of the new faith-based film projects Teen Musical – The Movie, Teen Musical “Behind-the-Scenes” Documentary and Teen Musical Official Movie Soundtrack. Teen Musical is a millennial update of the classic movie and stage show Godspell.

Paul Arrigo, CDME, Visit Baton Rouge President & CEO, was awarded the Joseph I Giarrusso Civic Award at the 35th Annual Louisiana American Italian Sports Hall of Fame Gala. The Award recognizes local Italian American individuals who have worked to better the quality of life for Italian Americans and their communities while excelling in their career.

Bruce Himbert, Head Bowling Coach at Brother Martin, was named the 2018-2019 LHSAA Boys Bowling Coach of the Year.

Corey Rosemond has been made Vice President of Business Operations of Nacon Gaming, Inc. after Bigben Interactive S. A. of France acquired the RIG Gaming business from Plantronics, Inc. where Corey was Global Director of eSports and Business Development. The RIG Gaming headset brand is #3 in the US and found at main retailers like GameStop, Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon.

Rod Teamer, Sr., Director of Diversity Programs and Business Development at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, has been honored as one of CityBusiness’ Business Icons. The award recognizes business leaders who have had a lasting influence on the city’s economic development and made their mark on the city overall.

These honorees, through their energy, innovative ideas, achievements and commitment to excellence, have moved our community forward.

Rod also received the 2020 Men Who Champion Women Award at the LSU Women’s Center Esprit de Femme Awards. Rod serves as Director of Diversity Programs for the Center.

Victor Fetter recently joined Fortive, a diversified industrial growth company, as their Global Chief Information Officer. While headquartered in Everett, WA, Victor and his family will be living in Austin, TX.

Najy Masri MD was selected by his peers as one of the state’s Best Doctors as profiled in New Orleans Magazine.

Scott Wolfe, chief executive officer of Levelset, New Orleans-based money management and payment startup for contractors in the construction industry, has closed on $30 million in financing from Horizons Ventures, the investment firm backed by Li Ka-shing, who is one of the world’s wealthiest billionaire property developers.

James Marquette ’62 CJ is a member of a select group. He graduated from St. Aloysius 8th grade and then graduated from Cor Jesu. He was kind enough to donate his Aloysius medals to our archives. If you are also an alum who graduated from both schools, let us know.

Phillip V. Parry has passed the American Board of Neurological Surgeons Oral Examination to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a fully board certified Neurosurgeon. He is in practice in Atlanta, GA.

John Exnicios, Realtor at Keller Williams Realty Services has been named Tangipahoa Parish Community Best Realtor and his agency was named best “Real Estate Team”.

David Theard has joined BXS Insurance, a subsidiary of BancorpSouth Bank, as an employee benefits consultant in the Metairie office.

2004

Detective Zachary Bruno has been named the 2019 St. Tammany Parish Deputy of the Year. Detective Bruno was hired by the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office as a deputy in the Corrections Division in November 2010. He obtained the rank of Corporal in 2012. He transferred to the Criminal Patrol Division, where was assigned to District 2 for the next three years. During his time in patrol, Detective Bruno was an active field training officer. In December 2016, Detective Bruno becomes an investigator and was transferred to the Property Division within the Criminal Investigations Division. After two years of investigating property crimes, Detective Bruno transferred to the Financial Crimes Unit. During 2019, Detective Bruno was assigned 99 cases and had a solve rate of 51 percent.

Detective Bruno investigates systematic thefts, embezzlements, scams, contractor thefts, and elderly financial abuse cases. Detective Bruno attended Louisiana State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

He and his wife currently reside in Mandeville and are certified foster parents.

Amando Dominick, second year law student at Temple University Beasley School of Law, is one of two recipients of the 2019 James W. Stoudt Memorial Scholarship Fund award. The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation sponsors the scholarship named to memorialize a steadfast supporter of the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, James W. Stoudt, who was instrumental in the creation of the Pennsylvania Bar Trust.

Giving Back The Dr. Joseph N. Macaluso, Jr. Family Scholarship has been fully endowed.

Joe Macaluso ’71, 2004 Alumnus of the Year, his wife Renée, and family have a long legacy with the Brothers. Joe’s father, Col. Joe Macaluso, Sr. graduated from St. Aloysius in 1945, his uncles Ephen Macaluso (deceased, graduated from St. Aloysius in 1941) and Nick Macaluso (deceased, graduated from St. Aloysius in 1947), and Joe’s Godson, Nick Macaluso graduated from Brother Martin in 1985. Joe also has some 20+ cousins who graduated from both St. Aloysius and Brother Martin over the years. Other alumni relatives include Sammy Bruiglio ’59 SA, Joe Bruigio ’55, Billy Deris ’62 SA (wife Susan Schiro), Brian Briuglio ’80, Paul Briuglio ’84, Matt Massey ’93, Ken Massey ’89, and members of the Pedone and Latino families and others.

The Creole Creamery “Pop-Up” David Bergeron ’91 and Bryan Gilmore ’92 of Creole Creamery held a pop up in for the Marty Hurley Band Endowment in support of the Brother Martin Crusader Band. Crusaders enjoyed some cookie monster ice cream while raising $2,137.

75 Years Ago – Oh, So Close

The 1945 football season was the first since World War II ended with the signing of the peace agreement with Japan September 2. For preppers, the cessation of hostilities meant that some coaches returned after serving in the military. The LHSAA Executive Committee, which included Brother Martin, S.C., the St. Aloysius principal, ruled that any player returning from military service who still had high school eligibility left could play for their former school if they satisfied all academic requirements and had not reached the age limit.

For the second year in a row, the SA-HC Sunday afternoon clash attracted the largest crowd of the season – 18,331. A shanked punt enable the Tigers to travel just 43y for the game’s first touchdown. Then a fumble recovery at the SA 44 led to another score to make it 13-0 at the half. The Crusaders came out of intermission fired up and scored on Hoffmann’s 52y “snake-hipped” run that kept alive his streak of scoring in every game. Led by future Tulane QB Joe Ernst, the Crossmen drove 79y for the clinching TD in the final period to win 20-6. The Tigers would cap their season by winning the state championship over Istrouma.

Aloysius ended the season with a victory over Nicholls in the final minutes.

Using a 4-4-2-1 defense, the Crimson Knights bottled up the Rebels’ running attack but also had difficulty gaining ground themselves. The Crusaders drove 94y to tie the score at 6-6 in the second period. Hoffmann started the march by gaining 27y to the 33. Tommy Goff got the final three. Nicholls retook the lead at the beginning of the second half when a 67y pass to the five set up a TD plunge. In what turned out to be a crucial play, the pass for the extra point was intercepted to keep the score at 12-6. As time wound down, Hoffmann started the winning drive with a 17y run to the Rebel 36. Roy led the city in rushing with 529y. He also topped all local scorers with 107 points. His great season enabled him to become the fourth Crusader to make first team All-State. The others were B Eddie Daigle (1931), G Leon Chaplain (1940-41), and B Johnny Campora (1941). Roy also joined HB Al Liska (1934) as the Aloysians who made the annual All-South team chosen by the Orlando Morning Sentinel.

Athletic Director Brother Mark, S.C., announced that Aloysius played before 63,200 fans during the season.
