*Homecoming/Bold Indicates Home Game Century II  45

Maj. Gen. Frank Bradfield III ’88 In August the NJROTC, Crusader Company, welcomed back Maj. Gen. Frank Bradfield III ’88 to Brother Martin. Maj. Gen. Bradfield took time out of his tight schedule to share insights from his professional journey. His positive experiences as an NJROTC cadet at Brother Martin contributed to his desire to serve both in the Navy as a helicopter pilot and in the Air Force Reserve as an A-10 and C-130 pilot. He impressed upon the cadets that, no matter what they do in life, they should live a life of service to others. Maj. Gen. Bradfield then joined our cadets for lunch in the Benson Mall.

Baseball Trip – Pittsburgh

Members of the Brother Martin community traveled to Pittsburgh for the annual Baseball Trip. The group attended two Pirates games vs. the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park. Some of the group went on the Secret Food Tours – Pittsburgh and enjoyed pierogies and a sandwich from Primanti Bros. If you would like to receive information about future trips, email alumni@brothermartin.com.

Athletic History by Ron Brocato Through its 56 years of existence, Brother Martin’s athletic programs have become elite among Louisiana’s high school peers. Since fielding its first teams in the fall of 1969, the school, which opened as Cor Jesu on the a 7½ acre corner parcel of Elysian Fields in 1954, has enjoyed a storied history in interscholastic sports, having won 52 state championships and earning 47 runners-up awards in 11 varsity sports since being a member of the fabled “Catholic League of New Orleans.” That’s quite an achievement for a school that was never meant to have an athletic program at all. In its humble beginnings, Cor Jesu athletics was nothing more than an intramural program, beginning with a freshman class of 140 boys in 1954. To accommodate its physical education endeavors, there were 10 outdoor blacktop basketball courts and 2 80-yard football fields. There was no gymnasium, so all P.E. activities took place behind the school building. And by 1964, more parents were sending their sons to the new and promising school. When asked about the possibility of the relatively new school expanding its extracurricular activities into a full-fledged interscholastic sports program as its enrollment slowly grew, Cor Jesu’s principal, Brother Roland, answered Clarion Herald Sports Editor Hal Berrigan with a profound “No.” At that time, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart already had a long-established school on the corner of North Rampart St. and Esplanade Avenue, St. Aloysius, whose athletic programs were on solid ground even though its enrollment had begun to decrease due to its location in a growing commercial area of the city. But Cor Jesu possessed newer facilities in the affluent Gentilly neighborhood of the city. The new school and its location showed the beginnings of a promising future, but the Brothers who founded the young school were not financially ready to expand that part of its educational offerings. Brother Roland explained to Berrigan, “The great cost of introducing interscholastic athletics, which includes building facilities, buying equipment, and hiring coaches, is the main thing that has discouraged us. But it is by no means the only factor.” The Cor Jesu principal said the school may appear to be able to accommodate a Class 3A sports program, but the intramural environment was more suitable to his intentions. “Furthermore,” he continued, “the school would rather stress academics than athletics.” But Brother Roland did not close his mind or the door to reconsideration if the school’s enrollment continued to grow. “We do not have a closed mind on this matter,” he continued. “I am not saying we will not enter competitive sports later on. Some of the school officials, including me, feel that this may be beneficial. But, again, finances must be considered.” As custodian of the young school’s financial health, Brother Roland looked hard at the numbers in the business ledger, pointing out to Berrigan that it would take a commitment of $40,000 to initiate a sports program, further adding that six months would be required to prepare for such an endeavor. The principal was not inexperienced in sports management. A former athletic director at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, he had been part of a successful sports program in Mississippi. “There is nothing like organized athletics for building an ‘esprit de corps,’ a common goal for a student body to fight for. But we don’t know if the benefits would justify the expenditure. We have all 600 of our boys participating in intramural sports. The other schools may have enrollments of 800, 900 or 1,000, but only 200 play on the teams,” Brother Roland reasoned. But with several other Catholic high schools providing New Orleans’ vast neighborhoods with sports programs, would Cor Jesu be able to grow without offering something more than intramurals? Brother Roland conceded, “A few boys have left here to go to other schools that

have competitive sports. We have to expect that some want this, but most do not. By not playing competitive sports, there is a tremendous saving of energy and time that can be directed into other training.” Even with that academics-only philosophy, Cor Jesu’s enrollment soon reached its peak, and no more students could be accommodated without expanding its facilities. Nevertheless, Brother Roland reasoned that even if the school decided to enter the local Catholic prep league, it would be battling foes superior in manpower and experience. “I have been at schools most of my teaching life that have had full sports programs, and I can appreciate the interest that is generated. I used to follow the games like a regular fan.” But that didn’t change his mind about what he envisioned for Cor Jesu’s future, a vision passed down from the school’s founder, Brother Martin Hernandez. “My predecessor, Brother Flavian, was strongly in favor of athletics,” Brother Roland pointed out. “But he grew to like the current program. I do not altogether disagree with him. It’s a lot easier trying to teach classes without interruptions for practices and distractions like prep rallies and ticket sales.” Ten months later, in December, 1964, Brother Roland’s reasoning took an aboutface. And the school’s tradition and fortunes were about to change forever. In a subsequent conversation with the Cor Jesu principal, Berrigan discovered that the school would join the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) with the intention of placing it in a single district with the area’s other large Catholic schools. Brother Roland explained the turnaround: “We felt that our intramural program was providing sufficient participation for our students, but competition with other schools will increase spirit and interest. We are depending on organizations like the Parents’ Club and the Alumni Association to assist in raising funds to operate the sports program.” Asked by Berrigan about outside pressure influencing his change of mind, Brother Roland replied emphatically, “No,” that it was about what he felt was best for the students. The plunge into top-flight prep sports will be wholehearted and complete, costing an estimated $500,000 to introduce four varsity sports: football, basketball, baseball and track and field, the principal said. “We have now paid off enough of our original debt to get into the sports picture, he pointed out. To inaugurate the program, $400,000 was allocated to construct a 2,000-seat gymnasium-auditorium, which would also house music practice rooms. Today, that facility is the Robert M. Conlin Gymnasium. Another $100,000 went into the addition of a planned baseball field and other athletic facilities, according to the Berrigan article. “Competition won’t start until September of 1965 with football,” Brother Roland said. “We already have a game lined up. St. Stanislaus (also run by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart) contacted us for a contract.” Cor Jesu’s enrollment of 600 boys placed the school in Class 3A, the highest in the LHSAA at that time. It would soon join charter members St. Aloysius, also run by the same religious order, Jesuit, Holy Cross, De La Salle and Redemptorist, and newcomers Archbishops Rummel and Shaw in a revamped Catholic League. The administration chose red and gold as the teams’ colors and Kingsmen as the mascot, and a new tradition was born at a school whose administration, at its inception, had no intention of entering the sports market. The young program endured some growing pains and played just one year (196869) in the Catholic League. Then, in the fall of 1969, St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu consolidated to give rise to Brother Martin, a proud school that has carried the colors and championship tradition into the future for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
