Brother Ronald Hingle, S.C. ’78 Named 2026 Alumnus of the Year

![]()

At our Alumnus of the Year celebration on March 8th, I introduced Brother Ronald Hingle, S.C. ’78, as our 2026 recipient. Here are the words used to describe Brother Ronald’s journey as a Brother Martin student and as a Brother of the Sacred Heart.
In my years as a student at Brother Martin and as a Partner in Mission, I have had the privilege of working with some incredible people, some of my teachers, some my colleagues, some my students. Many of these people I consider friends, for our relationship, initiated by Brother Martin High School, has turned into one of shared purpose and mission--spreading the charism of Father Andre Coindre and the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart through the evangelization of youth.
And I have stood at the podium for many years now, as President of our school, to introduce some of these friends as Alumnus of the Year. This year our Alumnus of the Year recipient is “Brother Ronald Hingle, S.C., a personal friend and a true friend of Brother Martin High School. Even though I was a year older than Ronnie in high school, I was impressed by his ardent love of everything Brother Martin. He was “all in,” … a true Golden Crusader.
After he graduated from Loyola University, New Orleans Ronnie began his vocational life here at Brother Martin as a math teacher and later served as math department chair. He served on the school administration at Catholic High. He was the principal at two inner-city Catholic schools in Montgomery, Alabama. And he led Saint Stanislaus from 1996 to 2010, serving as Vice Principal, then Principal, then President, before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina. What Ronnie did for the students, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart living there at that time, the faculty, staff, and the Bay St. Louis community following Katrina was truly remarkable. He has been the province’s vocation director and is now in his 3rd unprecedented
term as Provincial, responsible for the brothers and schools in the province, from New Hampshire down to New Orleans and across to Klagetoh, the Philippines, and England.
I reached out to Brother Barry Landry, who knows Brother Martin well from his time as Assistant Principal for Discipline and Attendance and now as a member of our school board. Brother Barry is also the first councilor on the Provincial Council, Ronnie’s right-hand man, as it were. Here is what Brother Barry Landry says about Ronnie, and I am quoting it because of the beauty and power of his language:
The list of roles Ronnie has had is impressive; but that resume is not the mark of this man. Ronnie’s generosity, compassion, joy, enthusiasm, sincerity, and self-sacrifice make him an authentic example of a committed Christian, and an exemplary Brother of the Sacred Heart. I have seen him challenge injustice and speak truth to power. I have seen him support others in times of great challenge and difficulty, and celebrate with joy others who achieve life milestones and accomplishments. As one of Ronnie’s former students here at Brother Martin said, “Brother Ronald is an inspiration.”
Ronnie’s days as a Provincial today are a far cry from his work as a classroom math teacher, student council moderator, or bus driver for school events, but the motivation for what he does and how he does it remains the same--to show God’s love and to make others want to do the same. His office coworkers at the Province Office all attest to Ronnie’s personal attention and hospitality, not just during special events, but even in mundane workday tasks. And anyone who meets Ronnie knows of his seemingly bottomless energy. Whether it was planning the Coindre Leadership Program and helping run the first CIAC and now PLACE in Lyon or RISE in Rome, Ronnie never does anything halfway. Good enough is not good enough. And what Ronnie is teaching us by his example is that we are all worthy of the best--the best trust in our own goodness and talents, the best sacredness of the work we have in sharing the Gospel message, the best help we can get to have young people--and even older people--believe we are better than we think we are and are loved by God unconditionally and fully when we might question our own worthiness of love.
I would like to single out one very special contribution Ronnie has made to the US Province to help all of our schools thrive and be prepared to do so for the foreseeable future, and with God’s blessings, beyond. In the mid-1980s, the
leadership of the Brothers realized that vocations to religious orders were in decline; the Brothers had to decide whether to hold tight to their charism, like clenching a fist, or to share their charism with lay partners, like opening a hand. To prepare the schools for an increase in lay leadership, the Brothers designed a formation program that we now know as the Coindre Leadership Program. Ronnie was one of its lead architects. He knew that the success of the schools, their charism-centeredness most importantly, relied on careful, progressive, and transformative experiences for current and future leadership. As a result, all of our schools in the United States are poised to be sanctuaries for young people where we know we have succeeded if our graduates leave us knowing that God loves them.
I could list more examples of his service, more titles and board memberships, but those would undercut Ronnie’s big heart, make him seem like a functionary rather than a man determined to leave the world a better place he found it and to form others to do the same. Bernard Couvillion, S.C. says to Ronnie, “attractive charism as a leader allowed you to make harmony among us brothers and partners in mission and make the religious life of our schools vibrant and exciting.” And Brother Barry says this about you, Ronnie: “He is a true son of Coindre. He believes to his core in God’s love for everyone, and through his service and leadership, he strives to remind each person to ‘never, ever doubt the love in the heart of God for you.’”
Ronnie, we are so honored to call you Partner in Mission, to call you friend, and to call you Crusader. Thank you for responding to the needs of our changing world and always recognizing the good in the world, the way of Christ and Coindre, and the many Brothers of the Sacred Heart who have come before you. Congratulations, Ronnie. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

We are excited to announce that 44 of our sophomores, juniors, and seniors have already scored 30 or higher on the ACT. A 30+ on the ACT places them in the top 10% nationally. This spring, that number will increase as students continue to test and advance in their academic careers. We’re incredibly proud of our Crusaders and look forward to their continued success as they prepare for college.
