Message From the President As we continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brother Martin High School and the 150th anniversary of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, we certainly feel blessed as we move forward to meet the needs of our changing world. Brother Martin is a thriving school, forming young men in the charism of our founder, Father André Coindre, and in the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

We have always had generous benefactors who support us through time, talent, and treasure. From prayers to pilings, we have grown in mission because of the love shown to us by our friends, graduates, current students, and families, young and old.

We have an incredible facility with which to form students. Over this past year, the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall was completely renovated with state of the art lighting, technology, and expanded seating and food service areas, including the Crusader Cafe and the Milton and Christine Dureau Food Court. Our ultramodern library, strategically relocated to the center of our academic campus, serves students in ways to expand their minds and prepare them for college and beyond. And starting in May 2019, we will begin “cooling the Conlin” gym, bringing air conditioning into our largest student assembly venue on campus. Our hope is that we will have an opening day school-wide liturgy in August in the Conlin Gym to set the tone for our 2019-2020 school year. Additional gym renovations are forthcoming, as we bring our premier athletic venue into the 21st century.

If our first 50 years as Brother Martin High School have been profound and transformative for the thousands of men we have formed, imagine the next 50 years! We cannot imagine them without the continued support of our alumni and friends, and we thank you for your commitment to excellence to Brother Martin.

Please feel free to stop by anytime to see our campus and meet our students. Our history is so strong when you think about the rich traditions and spirit of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and now Brother Martin, and our future is certainly bright as we stay true to our mission.

Message From the Principal As Brother Jean Sobert, S.C., was fond of saying when alumni of Cor Jesu, St. Aloysius, and Brother Martin High Schools would return to campus, “Welcome home!”

And so it is with Brother Jean’s words - and ear-to-ear smile - firmly embedded in my memory that I encourage each and everyone of you and your families to come back to campus whenever you can. When you step through our doors, you will undoubtedly see a number of changes as we move forward with innovations and creativity in academics, teaching and learning, and physical resources. I hope that you will also notice in these changes a nod to our past - to our traditions and to our legacies.

As a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school, we fully embrace the belief that our greatest tradition is change as we live a dynamic fidelity to both the charism of our founder, Fr. André Coindre, and to the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Innovation and excellence in teaching and learning can be found throughout our school, whether our students are building prosthetic hands through the use of 3-D printing and STEM curriculum or by traveling to Normandy, France as part of a community service project in conjunction with the National World War II Museum and its commemorating the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.

While our facilities continue to evolve to meet the needs of our changing world, they also continue to house the traditions of our schools that have permeated our campus since 1954. When you walk past the Student Services lobby in the main building, you will notice Fr. André Coindre’s quote that greets our students every morning as they walk to the Resource Center: “Courage and trust, that is my motto.” Coindre’s words overlook the desk once occupied by our school’s namesake, Brother Martin Hernandez. In the backyard, the newly dedicated sculpture of Brother Martin Hernandez stands watch over our entire school community. The significance is clear: We will move forward as an institution that models religious values, academic excellence, personal attention, and friendly discipline. And we will always pay homage to those who paved the way for each of us.

In the year 2019, we know where we are going as a school. And we will never forget where we’ve been. We pray that you will continue to join us as we move forward with dynamic fidelity in educating young men for life. Welcome home!

Milton Dureau ’69 CJ Named Alumnus of the Year

David Gallo ’77, Milton Dureau ’69 CJ and Greg Rando ’77 Each year the Board of Directors at Brother Martin High School selects an alumnus to receive the Senator J. Ellender Alumnus of the year award.

The recipient must be an individual who supports the mission of Brother Martin High School, who is dedicated to his family and to his career, who is a faith-filled Christian Disciple, and who is an excellent role model to our students. This year’s recipient is Milton M. Dureau, Jr. ’69 CJ.

At a ceremony held in March at the J.W. Marriott hotel downtown, Brother Martin President Greg Rando ’77 and Chairman of the Board of Directors David Gallo ‘77 presented the award to Milton.

The Alumnus of the Year weekend began with a gentlemen’s breakfast and ladies’ lunch on Saturday.

Later, members of the Dureau family, alumni, colleagues, friends, along with previous Ellender recipients, attended Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel celebrated by Fr. Paul Hart ’70 and Fr. David Ducote ’04. Later that evening, Milton and his wife, Christine joined previous Alumni of the Year and their wives at a cocktail reception at the home of Karen and Chuck Stall ’76.

Devlin Named Director of Schools In the fall of 2018, John Devlin was entrusted by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart to serve as the Executive Director of Schools for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart U.S. Province.

President Greg Rando ‘77. Devlin continues to use his vocation to educate young men and women for life throughout the United States Province. His mission consists of, but is not limited to, working closely with the Brothers’ schools through strategic planning consulting, advancement strategizing, and leadership development. He is also the Director of the Coindre Leadership Program, the province’s intensive program to develop future school leaders among the partners in mission.

In addition to Brad’s recognition, there were several faculty members who were recognized for their many years of service at Brother Martin. Our Founders Medal recipients were Tim and Beverly Napier (Brett ’03 and Garrett ’08). Recognized for 20 years of service were Valerie Hunter, David Joyner, Jean Thomeczek, and Patricia Zimmer. The faculty members recognized for 30 years of service were Ronnie Boudreaux and Patty Larkin. Lastly, very special recognition went to Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ for his 50 impactful years as a teacher and Brother of the Sacred Heart. To honor his fifty years of service, President Greg Rando ’77 presented Brother Neal a room dedication. From here on out, Room 205, the computer classroom that has been Brother Neal’s “home” for so many years and home to the high-quality instruction, formation, and witness of his life’s work, will be named the “Brother Neal Golden, S.C., Classroom.”

50-150 Celebration

To honor this momentous year, members of the Brother Martin community gathered for our 50/150 Anniversary Celebration in January. The evening began with a Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel celebrated by the Most Rev. Archbishop Gregory Aymond ’67 CJ with the assistance of Rev. David Ducote ’04 as the Liturgical Master of Ceremonies. Bishop Robert Muench ’60 CJ and the Rev. Paul Hart ‘70 served as the concelebrants alongside Deacon Richard Eason.

Greg Rando ’77 welcomed Mass attendees while giving an account of our history of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin schools. Student Council President Elliott Canty ’19, 50/150 Chair Erin Caruso, founding faculty member Guy Nelson, and Mark Romig ’74 were on hand as readers. A communion meditation called “Loving and Forgiving God” was written especially for the celebration by Chorus Director Kevin Caparotta ’88 and was sung by members of the Brother Martin Chorus and Alumni Chorus. After Mass, Brother Ivy LeBlanc, S.C., former principal and president of Brother Martin and former provincial of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, shared some special remarks with attendees.

After 43 ½ years of service to Brother Martin High School, Nick Lagattuta ’71 retired this past year. Nick served in many roles over the years. First as a teacher then in many administrative roles.

His term as Alumni Director paved the way for the thriving association we enjoy today. Most recently Nick served as Facilities Director overseeing numerous projects.

Brother Ivy for his vision, Brother Jean for his work, and Bob Conlin for his insight into the kids he taught and coached throughout the years had the biggest impact on Nick.

Nick had the joy of watching his son Marc graduate from Brother Martin in 1995.

He hopes his legacy, over the years at Brother Martin will be “servant leadership”.

The thing that Brother Martin taught him in all his years is “that it is not about me; it’s always about the greater good”.

Brother Martin Hernandez Statue Dedication

Joe Exnicios ’73, Kim Bernadas, Randy Hernandez ’95 and Barry Hebert ’74 A sculpture of Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C. was unveiled, dedicated and blessed at a ceremony to honor the school’s namesake in January. The bronze sculpture will stand as a testament to his lasting legacy. Brother Martin President Greg Rando ’77 began with prayer in thanksgiving for all of those who gathered to celebrate the dedication and blessing. Director of School Services & Alumni Relations Officer Barry Hebert ’74, shared his thoughts about the process of creating the sculpture and his work with sculptor Kim Bernadas. Brother Ronald Hingle ’78, Provincial of the United States Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, spoke about the life of Brother Martin Hernandez as a fellow Brother and educator. The guests knew Brother Martin as a teacher, mentor, leader and some as beloved family. Through his work, Brother Martin made his mark and influenced thousands of students at a number of schools in the Province of the United States, especially at St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, St. Stanislaus and Brother Martin High School.

Brother Ivy LeBlanc, John Devlin, Gene Tullier, Greg Rando ’77 and Ryan Gallagher ’00 member, elaborated on Brother Martin’s legacy. In particular, he noted his positive influence on Dick Treuting ’50 who knew Brother Martin as his Principal. The statue is dedicated in honor of Mr. Treuting and his commitment to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Father Kyle Dave ’89 blessed the statue.

Brother Martin’s great-nephew, Randy Hernandez ’95, remembered his great uncle’s larger-than-life personality and spoke fondly about seeing a personal side to the powerful man.

As Randy noted, Brother Martin was not very fond of goodbyes. Instead, his way of ending any note or conversation was to conclude with a phrase from a prayer: ‘Vaya con Dios’, meaning ‘Go with God.’

Celebrating 50/150 with Krewe of Carrollton In keeping with our 50/150 Anniversary Celebration, the Krewe of Carrollton added a special 50/150 anniversary float called “Brothers of the Sacred Heart” in their lineup. Float riders were Greg Rando ’77, Guy Nelson, Brother Neal Golden ’57 CJ, Brother Ronald Hingle ’78, Kenny Spellman ‘84, Barry Hebert ’74 and John Devlin. Parade goers were treated to crimson and gold medallion beads, cups, and doubloons. In addition, the Crusader Marching Band, NJROTC, cheerleaders, and Dominican Debs marched in front of the float.

President’s Dinner

The 13th annual dinner was the first for Greg Rando ’77 as President. The evening began with cocktails, horsd’oeuvres for our special guests and music provided by a Jazz Trio on the patio.

Once in the Patio Room, the President’s Dinner Committee Chairman P. Lindsey Williams ’83 welcomed guests, thanked his fellow members of the committee and welcomed Mr. Rando and his

Greg Rando thanked the Gootee Family, represented by Elaine and Pat Gootee ’65 SA, Kathy and Ken Gootee ’70, and Sara and Ryan Gootee for their sponsorship to establish the dinner. After providing an encouraging update on the current state of Brother Martin High School, he thanked Mr. John Devlin and Bro. Ivy LeBlanc for their work as past-presidents and assured

everyone that the future of Brother Martin High School is in good hands with a capable faculty and staff prepared to lead.

Grandparents Day

The Miltenberger Family Over 500 students and their grandparents gathered for Grandparents Day in late February. Crusaders and their families took time out of their busy schedules for a one-day-only event this year to spend time in prayer and thanksgiving with their grandparents. In his greeting, President Greg Rando ’77 commented that he was so proud to stand before our guests and welcome multiple generations of families on our ever-expanding campus.

Organized by student ministers, the day began with a morning prayer service thanking grandparents for sacrificing their time as well as their unconditional love. Justin Chambers ‘19 reminded them

that “the greatest legacy one can pass to one’s grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.”

Ryan O’ Connor ’19 also shared a reflection about his grandparents and thanked them for having God as the center of their family life. Then, Dylan Williams ’19 along with his grandfather, Don Musselman, recited the general petitions.

To conclude the prayer service, the grandsons and grandparents each read a special closing prayer to each other. The grandsons thanked their grandparents for everything they have done for

them and the grandparents asked their grandsons to continue to develop a compassionate heart and to persevere in hard times by placing their trust in God. Following the prayer service, Crusader grandparents entered the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall for a special reception with light refreshments. They were treated to a tour with their grandson(s) and could meet members of the faculty and administration while receiving a special gift. They were also able to shop for some great apparel in the Bookstore and take photos with their grandsons. The group shots were photographed by Ryan Romaguera ’92 and his team.

State Champions Wrestling State Champs

For the seventh time in eight years, the Crusaders celebrated a state wrestling championship at the Winter Pep Rally, The 2019 State championship was the 19th overall for Brother Martin, all since 1979, and the tenth for head coach Robbie Dauterive ‘84, a former Crusader wrestler. “It doesn’t get old, we’ll keep working to keep that trophy here,” Dauterive said. “When we kicked it into gear in 1979, since then, we have the most state titles. That means a lot to us.” Daniel Croy ‘19 won his third state title, capturing the championship at 132 pounds while Patrick Evans ‘19 won his second straight state championship, overcoming a knee injury to win at 145 pounds to cap a 23-1 season. Evans won 132 matches, losing just 19 with 64 pins in his illustrious career at Brother Martin. Evans carries a 4.6 GPA. Evans is a member of the National Honor Society and he will now go on to wrestling on scholarship at Virginia. Evans finished second in state as a sophomore. “It’s exciting, I’m happy, it’s been a long time coming,” Evans said. “I’ve been wrestling for a long time. It’s always been a dream of mine. I tore my MCL in December. It was tough coming back but I knew my team needed me. I wanted to be there for them. I gave it everything I could.” Logan Bertot ‘20 (120), Alex Duncan ‘20 (138) and Mason Massicot ‘20 (160) also won individual state titles. All three return next year. With a host of top returning wrestlers and the top junior varsity team in Louisiana, Brother Martin will be a formidable force again, as always, in 2020.

Bowling State Champs

Brother Martin survived a semifinal push from Central Lafourche and went on to win its fourth title in the past five years in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Bowling Championship. The Crusaders, the No. 2 seed, with their championship win over Rummel, became the first boys team and the first since the Denham Springs girls in 2008 to capture four team championships.

Brother Martin won its semifinal 15-12 over Central Lafourche and Rummel 21-6 in the final in the six-player best-of-27 point match. Cody Schaffer ’19 had a 625 and Hunter Dunn ’19 a 631 to pace the winners. “How’s it feel? It never gets old,” Crusaders coach Bruce Himbert ’78 said of the state title.

Campus News Students March for Life

The 2019 Annual March for Life exceeded any expectations that I have had from my previous two experiences at March for Life. This year, Brother Martin brought 30 students which is the most that we have ever had participate in the pilgrimage. It is always astounding to see upwards of 500 young people from the Archdiocese of New Orleans participate in such a powerful event. Going with the Archdiocese of New Orleans is truly a unique experience because of the spiritual renewal that many of the students receive from the encounter.

During adoration on ‘ministry night’, it was indescribable to see the number of youth truly touched by God and renewed in their faith life. Ministry nights also consisted of Christian music that truly lit up the entire room with joy and enthusiasm. I had never seen the type of energy that I experienced during several of the rallies, ministry nights, and especially the March itself. At the March for Life, I was shocked at the number of people in attendance; it seemed as if the crowd never ended. I have been several times before, but this year’s crowd just had a different zeal and energy that I had never felt before. This energy and passion made me confident that one day we will put an end to the various, abominable violations of human life that take place in America today.

Seeing all of the young people throughout the United States marching in unity for the same cause makes me certain that the future of our nation is in good hands. This experience was like no other, and I could not be happier to say that I am part of the pro-life generation.

– Vincent Giovingo ’19 Hunter Appleton ’19 has been selected as the 2018-19 Gatorade Louisiana Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. A National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, Hunter is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society. He serves as a school ambassador for incoming and visiting students and has participated in the Brother Martin Literary Rally. He has maintained a weighted 4.32 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in cross country and track and field on scholarship at the University of Colorado.

Evan Illg ’19 has a passion for aviation and the calm demeanor and courage to fly. Evan has begun the process of completing flight school to acquire his pilot license as a senior in high school. Every day after school, weather dependent, Evan drives over to Gulf Coast Aviation Flight school located at the Lakefront Airport for his flight school courses and practices. Evan’s long-term goal is to become a cargo pilot like his uncle, and he has already been accepted and is planning to attend Louisiana Tech University in the fall and major in Aviation Management.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Volunteer Service To honor the life and work of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Brother Martin students joined students from Dillard University, Loyola University New Orleans, University of New Orleans and Tulane University in a day of service at City Park.

Academics Law Studies

Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt ‘78, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, spoke to Brother Martin’s Law Studies class about the Bill of Rights and cases handled by the federal courts (district and appellate courts). Judge Engelhardt also provided valuable and practical guidance for our students emanating from the recent confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

Campus News Prison Ministry Team

Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 attended a summer retreat in Rome. The focus of the retreat, which brought together administrators from Sacred Heart schools across the world, was the charism of the order founded in 1821 by Father André Coindre, a priest born in Lyon, France. “One of the things that the Brothers basically reminded us in Rome was that the Brothers of the Sacred Heart essentially began in the prisons,” Gallagher said. “Father André started his work with the young and the imprisoned children. He started by visiting the prisons and taking boys who were orphaned and subsequently imprisoned and starting a school for them.” From this we have the newly formed Prison Ministry Team. They write letters and have traveled to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola to meet with trustees there who are part of a program run by the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Brother Martin hopes to spread word to other schools, encouraging them to join the effort.

Parent Club Monthy Rosary Every month our Brother Martin Parents Club gathers in the Branton Chapel for a monthly rosary service. Our Parents meet prior to the rosary service for coffee and water to start their day. One of the great things about these monthly rosary services is that our students can join their parents or come on their own for a morning in prayer. As a school community, we admire the unity of parents with their sons or students alone who come together, in prayer, with the rosary. All Crusader Parents are welcome to join our monthly Parents Club rosary.

Hunter Appleton ’19, Jake Bodino ’19, Patrick Evans ’19, Brady Faust ’19 and Cameron Johnson ’19 will be competing at the collegiate level in their respective sports. Appleton has committed to run cross country at the University of Colorado. Bodino has committed to play lacrosse at the University of Montevallo. Evans has committed to wrestle at the University of Virginia.

Faust has committed to play baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Lastly, Johnson has committed to run cross country at Loyola University New Orleans.

Thanksgiving Baseball Camp

Brother Martin’s Thanksgiving Baseball Camp allowed boys ages 6-12 years old to grab their baseball gloves and gear and learn valuable skills on E.A. Farley Field. Campers were coached by our Crusader coaching staff and players.

Campers got a chance to meet and play with Crusader Baseball alumnus, former LSU Baseball Player and current MLB player for the Oakland Athletics, Greg Deichmann ’14. Coach Jeff Lupo ’92, along with the coaching staff and players, were excited to teach the basics while throwing in some additional skills of the game.

Davonn Moore ’20 was named All-Metro Finalist-DB; Michael Faust ’19, All-Clarion Herald Elite Team-P and Brady Faust ’19, All-Metro Finalist and All-State Honorable Mention-WR. During the season, Beau Ranlett ’19 tied the Brother Martin record for most tackles in a game this year with 25 vs Rummel. In 2017, Brady Faust ’19 tied for the most receptions in a game vs Jesuit with nine.

Campus News Soccer Zachary Stolberg ’19 has been named to the AllAcademic Soccer Team.

Swimming Ryan O’ Connor ’19 was named to the 2018 LHSAA 4.0 Scholar Swim Team.

Tennis Hunter Kael ’19 has been named to the All-Academic Tennis Team.

Wrestling Andrew Nicola has been hired as our new head wrestling coach beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. Nicola started his career at Brother Martin as a varsity assistant coach for the Crusader wrestling team in September of 2018. Nicola brings to the table knowledge and experience in education, wrestling, athletics, and sports business administration. Prior to coaching at Brother Martin, Nicola has over nine years of high school and college coaching experience serving as the head wrestling coach of Concordia University in Nebraska. In addition, Nicola coached at California Baptist University and Cumberland University. In 2017, Nicola was recognized as Great Plains Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and the NAIA North Region Coach of the Year. In 2012, Nicola was named the Indiana State Wrestling Association (ISAW) Coach of the Year. Over the years, Nicola has coached an abundance of scholar-athletes, 7 NCAA National Qualifiers, and 16 NCAA Academic All-Americans. In addition, Nicola has coached 33 NAIA National Qualifiers and ten who have earned All-American honors, including current wrestling assistant Coach Jake Williams and Kyle Delaune ’13. Nicola also coached Ross Brister ’13 at Cumberland. Nicola was also a member of the coaching staff for the 2013 Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Originally from Fort Wayne, IN, Nicola is a USAW Silver Certified coach who holds the titles of the 2017 69kg Master’s National Championship in freestyle and Greco wrestling. In 2018, he captured the 70kg Master’s National Championship in freestyle and Greco wrestling. Nicola holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Biology from Indiana University, a Master’s of Science in Athletic and Sports Business Administration from the University of Central Missouri, and a Master’s of Arts in Education from Cumberland University. Currently, Nicola is pursuing a Master’s of Arts in Coach and High School Athletics Administration from Concordia University.

Extr acurricular Band Cameron Balser ’19 was selected to the All-National Honor Ensemble Orchestra. To qualify for selection, Cameron had to earn All-State Honor Orchestras in his state. He is the first Crusader to ever receive this honor and be selected for the All-National Honor Ensemble as a percussionist.

Christopher Lindner ’21 has been selected for the LMEA Senior High Jazz Band.

Crusaders for Life

Crusaders for Life & Justice club members attended the Louisiana Right to Life’s Proudly Pro-Life Gala. Don Garvey ’50 sponsored a table for Brother Martin High School.

Excalibur Dr. James Lange ‘64 SA spoke to the Excalibur National Science Honor Society members about his experience as a field operative working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) during the outbreak of the Ebola Virus.

He explained how the disease was discovered and ideas on its transmission. The students were so interested in his presentation that he will return in the Spring to speak to them again.

Key Club With the help of students, faculty and staff, the Key Club was able to fill 14 boxes of food for families in need for Thanksgiving. Seven of the boxes will be distributed to Good Shepherd and seven will be distributed to St. Benedict the Moor.

Our school is fortunate enough to have plenty left over food that was collected to overwhelmingly fill the food pantry at St. Anthony of Padua Church.

Brother Martin Mathletes competed in their first Mu Alpha Theta Tournament of 2019 at Catholic High School. There were over 600 students competing in the tournament. Our top performers included Lower Interschool - 1st Place and Calculus A Team - 2nd Place.

The team then competed in the Baton Rouge High Tournament against approximately 150 students from 18 different high schools from across the state. Three Crusaders earned recognition for their performance: Algebra 2 Individual Test - Evan Walker ‘21 1st Place Adv. Math Individual Test - Scott Hew ‘20 Honorable Mention Calculus A Team Test - Kohl Morris ‘19 3rd Place Kohl competed against teams of 4 Calculus students and by himself, was able to walk away with a 3rd Place Trophy.

Cadet Eric Gegenheimer ’20 will serve as Commanding Officer, Cadet Bryce Pellegrin ’20 as Executive Officer, and Cadet Michael Cuccia ’20 as Command Master Chief. The top leaders work to guide their staff throughout the year to continue the department’s superior success. The Change of Command and Awards Ceremony were held in April.

Student Council During the Thanksgiving break, members of Brother Martin’s Student Council worked at Second Harvest Food Bank as a way to give back to the community.

Day at the Races

On a beautiful Sunday in early February, a record crowd of alumni, parents and friends gathered for the Brother Martin “Day at the Races” at the New Orleans Fair Grounds Race Course. Guests dined in the Black & Gold Room which featured an assorted New Orleans cuisine of corned beef and cabbage, blackened shrimp, Tortellini, and chicken. Guests watched their favorite jockeys and horses on the race course from the private event balcony.

Lucky winners of the 50/50 raffle and the door prize drawings took home prizes. The winners of the “Winner Circle” raffle participated in a Race Trophy Presentation. Sal Brocato ’88 emceed the event.

Ungarino Family Gift Matthew Ungarino, father of Luke ’13 and John ’17, recently visited campus. He toured the relocated Brother Martin Library on the second floor and viewed the plaque in seminar area acknowledging his families’ named gift to Phase III of the Capital Campaign.

Wrestling Reunion In mid-January, the Crusader Wrestling community gathered at Mopho following the Crusaders’ 52-10 victory over the St. Paul’s Wolves. The State Championship teams from 1979, 1984, 1999 and 2014 were honored. Coach Robbie Dauterive ‘84 addressed the group and updated them on the status of the wrestling program. Alumni celebrated the program’s 19th state championship in 2019.

Alumni Revue The Dionysian Alumni performed in a Musical Revue in the Auditorium. The cast came to campus earlier in the day to practice and reminisce about their days in the drama club. The revue lasted an hour and showcased many musical numbers from shows the cast selected. The event is sponsored by our Parents Club and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association and is held annually in remembrance of Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C., our school’s namesake.

Former principal and president of Brother Martin, John Devlin served as the keynote speaker

and took this opportunity to share a story of a young man who was presented with unlikely circumstances in his young life. In the past, this story was presented to Brother Martin juniors on their retreat.

3-point contest winner, Bryant Boudreaux ’14 Members of the Brother Martin basketball community gathered for multiple events celebrating the rich history of our basketball program.

In January, the Advancement Office hosted a pregame reception in the Terrace. Alumni and friends enjoyed food and drinks before cheering on the Crusaders against the St. Augustine Purple Knights.

Cor Jesu alumni stepped back on campus to watch the varsity basketball team take on the Holy Cross Tigers. The current Crusader basketball team donned the former CJ colors and uniforms on the court. Cor Jesu alumni were recognized at halftime.

In mid-April, alumni and current dads joined together for a Day of Reflection on campus. The day’s activities consisted of presentations by guest speaker Deacon Terry Manieri ’64 SA, prayer, reflection, adoration, rosary, Stations of the Cross, Reconciliation, and Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel celebrated by Fr. David Ducote ’04. Deacon Manieri’s theme for the day was “Peter, Paul, and Mary: Justice, Mercy, and Grace”. After Mass, all participants enjoyed lunch in the Bro. Mark Thornton Terrace and took time for a group photo.

Lenten Fish Fry

Lisa, Sarah and Gary Alfonso Brother Martin High School hosted their annual Friday Night Lenten Fish Fry on Friday, March 29 in the newly renovated Tom and Gayle Benson Mall. Volunteers and members of the Parents Club cooked up and served an abundance of fried fish and shrimp seafood dinners and po-boys.

These seafood lovers also had the opportunity to dine-in the Benson Mall or go through curbside pick-up. Members of the Student Ministry team were on hand selling desserts for guests to purchase and the Crusader Stage Band performed for entertainment. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Missions in the U.S. and around the world.

CGN - Finance Tip – 529 Plans The cost of college continues to get more expensive with each passing year. In additional to high tuition prices, paying for housing, food, transportation, books and other school-related fees can add thousands of dollars to college expenses.

In order to prepare and save for cost of highereducation, 529 Plans were enacted by the federal government to give favorable tax treatment to money saved and to be spent on higher-education.

Every State, including Louisiana, sponsors at least one type of 529 plan.

Michael Saucier is a managing partner for the new Copperstill Marketplace in Covington, LA. Gulf States Real Estate Services, which Saucier founded, laid the groundwork in the project development, construction and leasing of the Shops of Copperstill.

1987 Members of the Class of 1970 joined faculty, staff and students at our weekly Thursday Mass in the Branton Chapel. Fr. Paul Hart ’70 celebrated Mass and welcomed his classmates. After Mass, Advancement Director Kenny Spellman ‘84 led a tour of campus followed by coffee and pastries, in the Crusader Cafe, located in the newly renovated Tom & Gayle Benson Mall. “The Charter Class” has a number of events planned leading up to their 50-year celebration in 2020.

Fred Escher graduated with a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies from Loyola University, New Orleans. He teaches freshman and junior Religion at St. Paul’s High School in Covington, LA. Fred also serves as assistant track coach at the school. His volunteer work includes being Chairman of the SALT Council of St. Tammany Parish and teaching Religion at St. Jane de Chantal.

Sean Bruno, CPA was recently elected to the Metairie Bank & Trust Board of Directors. Sean started Sean M. Bruno CPAs in 2009 and serves as CAO for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Eric Held has been named the new Interim Director of the Louisiana High School Coaches Association by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Eric has been a member of the LHSCA and the Louisiana Football Coaches Association since 1995, where he is a current board member. He has 25 years of experience in coaching as well as 24 years of experience as a teacher. Eric most recently served as an eighth grade Louisiana History and PE teacher at Catholic High and an assistant football and golf coach. He graduated from Nicholls State University, where he served as the Special Teams Captain for the Colonels and was also a two-year letterman.

Kiley Hyman is blessed to celebrate his 30th year as a Cantor & Singer with the Archdiocese of New Orleans. For over a decade he worked with Holy Rosary Academy & High School as a Learning Therapist. Kiley is one of few who wrestled Varsity in the eighth grade. He was also the inaugural Cantor for the Branton Chapel.

Tim Taylor has been appointed Chief Financial Officer at PAS Global LLC in Houston, the leading solution provider of industrial control system (ICS) cybersecurity, process safety, and asset reliability in the energy, power and process industries. Peter Pham is co-creator of the Asian Chamber of Commerce of Acadiana (ACCA). Malik Muhammed defended his doctoral dissertation “Saving Space: A Spatial Recasting of the Divine/Human Encounter for an Urban Theology”. He graduated in May from Fordham University in New York City with a PhD in Systematic Theology.

John Starr has been named Principal at Roosevelt Elementary and will take charge of their transition to a PK-8 school. He is the current principal of Riviere Elementary. Under his leadership, Riviere has consistently maintained an A or B rating and was one of 13 JP Schools named an Equity Honoree by the state for its progress with students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, and English language learners. Starr is an educational administration doctoral candidate at the University of New Orleans.

Neil Chatelain received the Lone Star College System Faculty Writing Award for the Division of Social Sciences. His awardwinning work was titled “The Confederacy’s Lake Pontchartrain Naval Squadron: A Cooperative Defense of the Coastal Approaches to New Orleans, 1861-1862” which was published in Louisiana History, Vol. 59, No. 2, Spring 2018.

Jason D. Jones, MD participated in the Doctorial Hooding Ceremony and hooded his younger brother, Brandon. Jason is a Gastroenterology Fellow at Wake Forest Baptist Health Medical Center in Winston-Salem North Carolina.

Brandon M. Jones is graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from LSUHSC in May. Brandon has accepted a Pediatric Neurology Resident position at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota.

Will Stall Recently began working at NextHome Real Estate Professionals as a Licensed Realtor. He was also a part of the Brother Martin varsity wrestling team’s most recent state championship, his 6th title in 7 years on staff as an assistant coach at Brother Martin.

Chapter Reports Arizona Chapter

Alumni and their guests celebrated the inaugural Arizona Chapter event at the Phoenix/Mesa Hilton in late March. Kenny Spellman ‘84, Julia Gandolfi, our Capital Campaign Director and Legacy Board member Pat Pritchett ‘78 were in Arizona for a planned giving conference and capitalized on the opportunity to meet our alumni. Tim Buckle ’82 was elected chapter leader and plans are already being made for the next event.

Members of the Brother Martin community gathered at Rock n Bowl – Lafayette to watch the Saints vs Cowboys game. Joe Palestina ’05 and his staff of seven Crusader alumni facilitated a delightful evening for all of our Brother Martin guests. Joe also donated a $50 Rock n Bowl gift card for the evening’s raffle. Alumni Officer Chuck Stall ’02 gave an update of the latest campus news and on the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans.

Washington D.C. Chapter In early February, D.C. area alumni gathered at the City Tap in Dupont Circle. Attendees were able to meet, socialize and network. Alumni Day at Tulane Alumni Officers Chuck Stall ’02 and Chris Alley ’08 visited alumni at Tulane University in February. Alumni were updated on campus activity; they shared stories about their college experience and filled out a brief survey about “college readiness.” The Alumni Office distributed Brother Martin gifts Omar Ahmad ’18 and Chuck Stall ’02 and encouraged the young alumni to stay in touch.

A Chat with the Michigan AD

The path from Brother Martin to his present position as athletic director at the University of Michigan started out for Warde Manuel ’86 with another objective but detoured because of a major disappointment along the way.

After attending Corpus Christi School through 7th grade, Warde’s choice of high school came down to St. Augustine and Brother Martin. “My older brother went to St. Augustine and played football there when we lived in Corpus Christi parish.” But a family move to a home within walking distance of 4401 Elysian Fields Avenue made a difference in his choice. “I just liked Brother Martin. Plus, it was close to our house. There was tension there – either Brother Martin or St. Aug. I’m very happy with the decision I made. I loved my five years there.”

Claire LeBlanc, a math teacher (“she was awesome”), and John Devlin (“a great teacher who taught me physical science and biology”). Warde also took honors chemistry and honors physics.

“When I left Brother Martin, I was going to be a pharmacy major because I loved science.”

The high school football game Warde most remembers is his last one. The 1985 Crusaders were a powerhouse with numerous future college players in addition to Warde. They traveled to St. Martinville for a semifinal game. “We knew St. Martinville would be a tough game, but we felt we were prepared.” But two Crusader fumbles deep in their own territory led to touchdowns and a dropped pass Senior Warde Manuel with Bob Conlin prevented Brother Martin from tying the game in the last minutes. The result was a 14-7 upset. Ehret then beat the Tigers in the Superdome the following week to win the AAAA Warde played sports year-round as a Crusader – basketball until 9th grade, championship.

“We had beaten Ehret pretty well in a scrimmage that year. After earning his bachelor’s degree in general studies with a focus on psychology, Warde got a master’s degree in social work in 1993. Meanwhile, he started in athletic administration and has been in that field ever since. He was an assistant athletic director at Michigan for nine years, rising to the Associate AD position in charge of football, men’s basketball, and building an academic center. “I had a great time here, but I wanted the opportunity to lead an athletic department.” So he accepted the position of AD at the University of Buffalo in 2005. After 6 ½ years there, he took the same position at the University of Connecticut for four years before returning to his alma mater in 2016. Along the way, he earned another master’s degree from Michigan, this one in business administration.

He hasn’t been to New Orleans since UConn played Tulane in women’s basketball. But he keeps up with the school through this publication. “I’m glad to see that Brother Martin is continuing to change lives like it changed mine.”

“Bo said luck is where preparation meets opportunity. I’ve been lucky enough in my career. I’m ecstatic to be back at Michigan, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that my wife and I and our daughter and son enjoyed Buffalo and Connecticut and the experience we had at both institutions.”

What’s the hardest part of his job?

“Pleasing people. When I first took this job, somebody said, ‘Warde, congratulations. You now have the opportunity to make two to three million Wolverine fans happy.’ They were joking, but it’s not too far off.

Dealing with issues of people whether it’s students or my staff and coaches or dealing with things on campus or with our fans and donors, a lot of what I do is dealing with people. So I use my social work and psychology background more than I use my MBA.”
