Message from the President “God made the world in six days to teach us that it takes time to achieve anything worthwhile, and that things never go as well in their infancy as when they attain full maturity.”

Father André Coindre I thought the quote above from Father Coindre, writing to one of his brother directors running a school in a city outside Lyon, France, is quite appropriate for the “good news” we want to emphasize as we end the calendar year 2021.

After several years of hard work--and with plenty of support from our community and benefactors--we are coming to the close of Phase III of the Brother Martin High School Master Plan “Fidelity through Change.” By the end of summer 2022, all of the plans that originated in the mid-1990s will be complete; the renovation of the Robert Conlin Gymnasium is the milestone that marks over 25 years of growth. If you have been on campus recently, you know that the Conlin Gym features new interior painting, installation of air conditioning, new state-of-the-art LED lighting, new safety padding, and a new scoreboard. Forthcoming are new wooden bleachers and a hardwood floor. As much history has been made in this gym--from basketball games and wrestling meets to school-wide Masses and pep rallies--we have a showcase to truly display the Crusader spirit.

This upcoming summer will also witness a renovation of the first floor resource center, including LED lighting and new student furniture, as well as the construction of a baseball hitting facility that features three batting cages, to be built on Farley Field along Mandeville Street.

Since these renovations, improvements, and additions bring an end to Phase III, we look forward to new plans and projects. January 2022 will see the start of a new “5-year Strategic Plan” for Brother Martin High School that will consider all aspects of school life. A steering committee has already been formed and has met to begin this process. However, as we continue the conversation on future priorities for Brother Martin, we will need your input and ideas! There will be opportunities for all members of the Brother Martin family--students, parents, faculty and staff, and alumni--to provide input through a series of upcoming focus groups.

Our Mission Statement calls attention to “meeting the needs of a changing world” for our Crusaders, and we firmly believe that with careful and collaborative planning, we can further refine the programs and facilities that have made Brother Martin High School--and education in the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans--the outstanding formative institution it has always been.

As we begin this exciting process of strategic planning, we thank you in advance for your support, prayers, and involvement in Brother Martin High School.

Message from the Principal On Thursday, September 30, we celebrated as a school community the culmination of the Bicentennial of the founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart worldwide at each of our 11 schools in the United States and in the 37 countries in which the Brothers of the Sacred Heart do their work, a celebration made possible because of the foresight and faith of a single man - Fr. André Coindre, the founder of this Institute.

Brother Martin did not invent the instrument. God did. The Holy Spirit handed down that instrument first to André Coindre, who shaped it and handed it to ten others, who molded it and passed it to five more, who eventually saw that it found its way to Brother Martin the man. All different forms of courage and trust, fused together by faith.

200 years have passed since ten men ascended together in La Fouviere, a church in Lyon, France, to take the first vows of the Brothers, breathing life to the rich institution that we know today. These ten men gathered together united in faith in God. We have all benefited in some way from that tremendous faith. On a much smaller scale, our students and faculty gather on a daily basis as a community of Crusaders united in our Faith.

Certainly, future challenges await. But our way is lit by our tradition. Where our predecessors walked with only blind faith, we now walk with the light of tradition lit by 200 years of experience across the world and over 150 years of tradition in this very city. This tradition is marked in the hallways and classrooms on Elysian Fields Avenue, and it can be traced into the French Quarter on Barracks and Charters and again on Rampart and Esplanade, where our schools first sat.

Nearly 50 years after the establishment of the Institute in France, five Brothers responded to a call to spread the wings of the Institute to the New World, to America, and these Brothers eventually found their way to New Orleans.

Imagine, if you can, that leap of faith. Imagine the difficulties endured...and the courage, trust, and faith necessary to make that sacrifice.

Our students hear every year at ‘that school on Elysian Fields’, as Brother Martin Hernandez himself used to refer to it, that Brother Martin Hernandez once said, “If I have done any good in my life, it is because God used me as his instrument.”

As a school community, I am proud that our students and faculty continue the responsibility of walking that road forged by men like Fr. Coindre and Brother Martin. We do so knowing that the eyes of those who preceded us and those who will follow us cast their gaze along our path.

Just as God used André Coindre as His instrument 200 years ago and, later, Brother Martin Hernandez, so too does He use our students. We look forward with courage and trust to the next 200 years at ‘that school on Elysian Fields.’

David Gallo ’77, Larry Gibbs ’65 CJ, and Greg Rando ’77 On Sunday, December 5, 2021, members of the Brother Martin High School community gathered at the Audubon Tea Room for the 2021 Alumnus of the Year Ceremony honoring Larry Gibbs ’65 CJ. The Alumnus of the Year award is presented annually by the Board of Directors of Brother Martin High School to an alumnus selected for contributions to his profession and for his religious, civic, business, educational, and community involvement.

Larry and his wife Marian have supported the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Brother Martin High School in many ways over the years. They have provided students opportunities through scholarships and have assisted in advancing our institution through generous gifts to our capital campaigns since the mid-1990s. Larry has shared his time at Career Day and with the Crimson & Gold Network, and most recently, he made a significant gift toward the dedication of Cor Jesu Hall. Larry served as CEO and president of Gibbs Construction for 43 years, until retiring in 2019. Larry’s career at Gibbs Construction was productive, wonderful, beautiful in every measurable and non-measurable way. Larry has served on numerous boards, both professional and philanthropic, and he is a respected leader in our community.

Kraig de Lanzac ’86 Named 2022 Alumnus of the Year Brother Martin High School as the recipient of the 2022 Alumnus of the Year.

Rhen and Kraig de Lanzac ’86 Kraig S. de Lanzac, M.D., FASA, Class of 1986, has been selected by the Board of Directors at

Kraig has been an active member of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Board since 2010 and served as the President of the Alumni Board from 2014 - 2016. Kraig also served as the President of the Brother Martin Parents Club from 2016-2018.

Kraig, his wife, Rhen, and their two children, Mallory and Braden ’18, are actively involved in the Brother Martin community through charitable donations, volunteering at school and alumni events, and participating in Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni functions. Kraig, along with Michael Hotstream and David Connick, reinstituted the Brother Martin Alumni Band in 2006, and he remains a member of the planning committee, its annual social, and performance. Kraig is a member of the Marty Gras Benefit Concert Committee and served on the Phase III Steering Committee. Kraig and Rhen served as Co-Chairs of the 2013 Auction

Patron Party and Chaired the 2014 Auction.

They are also members of the President’s Dinner Committee.

Kraig received his medical doctorate from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1993, completed his residency in anesthesiology at LSUHSC in 1997, and is a board-certified physician anesthesiologist. Kraig joined the Tulane School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology in January 2018 and serves as the Director of Clinical Anesthesia at Tulane Lakeside Hospital.

Kraig serves as the Assistant Secretary and a member of the Administrative Council of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, a 54,000 member organization dedicated to advancing the medical practice of Anesthesiology and protecting patient safety. He also serves on the Board Directors of the Louisiana Society of Anesthesiologists.

National Merit Recognition

Borde Lindner Lormand Millet Sanborn Five members of Brother Martin’s Class of 2022 have been honored as National Merit Semifinalists for their Academic Excellence and achievements with their PSAT exam. Kyle Borde ’22, Matthew Lindner ’22, Chase Lormand ’22, Logan Millet ’22, Landin Sanborn ’22 These seniors will have the opportunity to advance to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition by fulfilling several requirements set forth by the program. Brother Martin is incredibly proud of all our students for their continuous academic achievements and for these five seniors for their honorable recognition as National Merit Semifinalists.

Campus News World Geography, Physical Science, and English Some Crusader 8th graders headed to a local coastline to witness first hand the beauty and fragility of southern Louisiana. To complement these students’ summer reading of Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana’s Cajun Coast by Mike Tidwell, this field experience brought students to locations throughout southeast Louisiana including stops at Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion, St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church along Lake Catherine, Fort Pike at the edge of the Rigolets, and Cajun Encounters Swamp Tour on the West Pearl River.

Athletics Basketball The Crusader Basketball Team is 12-0 and have won three tournaments in the early season.

Cross Country After improving all season long, the Crusaders placed 2nd at District and had a strong 4th-place finish in the LHSAA State Meet.

Football The Crusader Football Team faced every challenge during the season on and off the field. The Crusaders reached the LHSAA Div. 1 semi-finals.

Although the season didn’t end the way the Crusader Nation wished, our coaches, players, and fans stayed true to our mission.

Garrett Mmahat ’22 was honored as the WGNO “Scholar-Athlete” of the week. Garrett carries a 4.2-grade-point average. He scored a 27 on the act.

Swimming

The Crusader Swimming Team finished as runner-up at the Metro District 9-5A Championship.

Wrestling The Crusader Wrestling Team has started the season 11-0 in dual meets and has won tournaments in Texas, Tennessee, and Alabama.

They are currently ranked number one in the state and recently won the Trey Culotta Invitational, where teams from seven states competed.

Open House Brother Martin welcomed future Crusaders and their families at Open House in early November. Approximately 450 families and 6th through 8th-graders toured campus. Guests were welcomed and registered and began the tour in the Branton Chapel. Christopher G’sell ’26 led the opening prayer then Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 and President Gregory Rando ’77 spoke of the mission statement of Brother Martin High School and shared the philosophy of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart which is rooted in a holistic approach to education that is enriched in religious values, friendly discipline, academic excellence, and personal attention. Addison Wilberg ’22 then shared a reflection on his time at Brother Martin, remarking “the best part about Brother Martin’s academics is their ability to cater to each individual’s education so that he may become as successful as possible. The faculty takes care of each student on a personal basis, which is a unique characteristic of Brother Martin. I knew if I ever had a question, then there would be a teacher waiting right around the corner to answer it for the purpose of helping me.” Guests then briefly visited with Assistant Principal for Admissions Carlos Bogran III ’99 then began their tours where current Brother Martin students showcased our state-ofthe-art facilities and shared important information about our school’s history, academic course offerings and schedule, extracurricular opportunities, athletics interests, and a host of other topics. Campus News Crusader Discovery Day Crusader Discovery Night was turned into a Discovery DAY as prospective students in grades 6-8 received a warm welcome in early October. Future Crusaders were able to play games in both the Conlin and Aloysius Gyms as well as in the Backyard before taking a break in the Benson Mall.

Carlos Bogran III ’99, Assistant Principal for Admissions, also provided an official welcome explaining the rest of the day’s activities which included four rotations: Science Demonstrations, Extracurricular Club Fair, LHSAA Athletic Team meet and greets with current players and coaches, and a Jeopardy game regarding knowledge about Brother Martin.

The evening concluded with a Discovery Day Pep Rally in the Conlin Gym led by the Student Council, Crusader Band, and our two-year consecutive Crusader Cheerleading National Champions.

Ring Mass The Class of 2022 received their senior rings in late August at St. Dominic Catholic Church at our annual Ring Mass. This liturgy celebrates the kick-off to our Crusaders’ senior year and represents the rich tradition of Brother Martin High School. After a homily by Mass Officiant, Fr. Paul Hart ’70, Brother Martin Chaplain, Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 offered a reflection before the seniors received their rings.

Homecoming

Crusaders and their dates attended the 2021 Homecoming Dance. Because of Hurricane Ida complications, the Pontchartrain Convention was unable to host the dance this year, so The Conlin Gym was transformed for the dance.

2nd Quarter Senior Lunch The Class of 2022 enjoyed their second-quarter Senior Lunch in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace.

This lunch was an opportunity for the seniors to come together and enjoy some time with their classmates before the start of quarterly exams. The Advancement Office sponsored the lunch featuring food by Francesca by Katie’s. Staff and senior parent volunteers and donors ensured a successful event.

College Day College Day took place in the Conlin Gym where representatives from over 30 colleges met with students, distributed information, and answered questions about their respective campuses.

Ring Dance

Senior Retreats Seniors and their dates danced into the evening during the Senior Ring Dance in late September. They enjoyed music and refreshments in the Benson Mall.

Campus News Schoolwide Liturgies Brother Martin High School gathered for an All Saints’ Day Liturgy in the Conlin Gym in early November. Fr. Jeremy Lambert led the liturgy. After, Advancement and Alumni Director, Kenny Spellman ‘84, introduced the Brother Martin Alumnus of the Year, Lawrence C. “Larry” Gibbs ’65 CJ, who spoke to our Crusaders about the importance of staying true to oneself.

Brother Martin celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception with a Liturgy in early December.

On September 30th, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart celebrated the Bicentennial of their foundation. While we celebrate Foundation Day annually at school, this year’s milestone was especially significant for all of our partners in the mission as we paused in thanksgiving for the vision of Father André Coindre, the Brothers’ founder, and the charism bestowed upon him by the Holy Spirit.

His vision and this charism spread from Lyon, France to over 30 countries and more than 200 schools across the world. Father Andrew Sanchez ’03 and Father Kyle Dave ’89 preside over the liturgies, and Brother Ronald Hingle ’78, Provincial of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart’s Province of the United States, share a reflection with our student body at Mass in the Conlin Gym. Pep Rallies Students showed their spirit at Fall pep rallies.

Key Club

In late September our Key Club and Student Council members led by Paul Marcello ’12 and Jennifer Taylor ventured forth to the United Way donation center in St. Charles Parish. There, the essential supplies they gathered were distributed to families in need who have been recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Scholarship Recipient Dwight Alexander ’22 has been awarded the prestigious Oscar J. Tolmas Scholarship through the PLEASE Foundation. This scholarship is set up to honor the memory of Oscar J. Tolmas who generously formed the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust which supports other tax-exempt organizations within their mission of helping others. Trustees Vincent Giardina and Lisa Romano chose Dwight as one of this years’ recipients.

Hyde Biehl Bordes Levy At the annual Leadership Celebration sponsored by the archdiocesan CYO/ Youth and Young Adult Ministry Office in July at Divine Mercy Church, several Crusaders who are very actively involved in parish and school activities were honored. Spencer Hyde ’21 was presented with the St. Timothy Award, the highest honor the Archdiocese of New Orleans can bestow. Archbishop Gregory Aymond ’67 CJ and Auxiliary Bishop Fernand Cheri presented these awards. Andy Biehl ’22, Gabriel Levy ’23, and Kevin Bordes ’22 were recognized with the Outstanding Parish Youth Award.

Lettermen Reunion at Francesca The Brother Martin Community gathered in true Crusader spirit for the 2021 Homecoming Tailgate, Reunion and Game vs. the Archbishop Shaw Eagles.

The Tailgate featured jambalaya prepared and served by our Culinary Crusaders under the direction of Donnie Midkiff ’03. Alumni, families, and friends enjoyed Coca-Cola refreshments while dining on a large variety of selections. Pat Barbaro ’85 served as emcee and provided music. Before heading into the stadium, the 2021 Homecoming Court was introduced with their student escorts, our “back-to-back” National Championship Cheerleaders, the Crusader Band, and Drum Line entertained guests with special performances.

Lastly, our 1971 State Championship Football Team, coached by Bob Conlin, and our 1971 State Championship Cross Country Team, coached by Jack Schommer, were recognized on their 50th anniversary.

50 years ago Brother Martin made Louisiana High School Athletic History! On Friday, December 10, 1971, our Crusaders won two State Championships.

The Crusader Football Team captured the quad- A State Championship by defeating St. Augustine 23-0 here at Tad Gormley Stadium. Earlier that day, our Cross-country team won their first State Championship in Baton Rouge.

Serving as honorary captains for the game were the 1971 football team captains Don Angle, Kenny Bordelon, and Steve Treuting.

The Crusader Football Team remained undefeated with an impressive 47-15 victory.

Class of ’81 During halftime, Miss Allie Broussard was named the 2021 Homecoming Queen and Alumni Board President Dr. Leni Sumich ’90 presented her crown. Peyton Aucoin ’16, Ryan Hoefeld ’13, Chance Miller ’88, Hillar Moore ’72, Doug Mouton ’81, Josh Thomas ’97 and Adam Zander ’08 served as alumni escorts.

At the end of the third quarter, Crusader Band Alumni Drum Majors gathered for a special presentation sponsored by Arthur Hardy.

Cor Jesu Hall Dedication & Plus 50 Mass Cor Jesu Alumni joined in the Dedication of Cor Jesu Hall at Brother Martin High School in midSeptember. Fr. Dennis Hayes ’78 presided over the blessing, Frank Jobert ’69 CJ addressed the crowd and thanked the donors, the support staff, and the Brother Martin High School administration. Frank chaired the committee that raised more than $100,000 toward the naming of Cor Jesu Hall. Alumni and guests toured the classrooms in the original building. Plaques hang outside of each classroom recognizing the Cor Jesu graduation class for which each classroom is dedicated.

The St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu Alumni then celebrated their Plus 50 Reunion Mass in the Branton Chapel. Fr. Dennis Hayes ’78 celebrated Mass. Kevin Caparotta ’88 and members of the Brother Martin Chorus and the Alumni Chorus provided the music, and Brother Martin Student Ambassadors, under the direction of Campus Minister Mark Bordelon, assisted with the event.

Dennis Hayes ’78 After Mass, Advancement and Alumni Director Kenny Spellman ’84 announced classes celebrating reunion years and welcomed the newest members, the Cor Jesu and St. Aloysius classes of 1969 and the Brother Martin Class of 1970. Richard Cullen ’69 CJ from Poplarville, MS, was recognized as the alumnus traveling the farthest to attend the event, and Leon Perret, St. Aloysius Class of 1940, celebrating his 80th reunion, was recognized as the alumnus from the earliest class. Lastly, Brother Bernie Couvillion, S.C. and Brother Paul Montero, S.C. shared inspirational words with these men “who have been a blessing to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the young men who carry on the Charism of Fr. Coindre and the Tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and their Lay Partners in Mission.”

Sacré Coeur Society Mass Family and friends came together to celebrate the inaugural Sacré Coeur Society Mass in late October in the James B. Branton ’74 Chapel. Monsignor Andrew C. Crimson & Gold Network Crimson & Gold Network Forum The Crimson & Gold Network (CGN) hosted a forum in late September in the Brother Martin High School Terrace. Kenny Spellman ’84 welcomed everyone and informed the group that the CGN now has 752 members on LinkedIn, 1445 members on Facebook, and four sub-groups--Oil & Energy Professionals, Finance Professionals, Law Enforcement/ First Responders, and the recently formed CGN-Young Professionals.

Giving Back Over 60 alumni returned to campus to share their professional experiences at Career Day in late October. Alumni were welcomed in the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall where they enjoyed coffee and donuts. After gathering for a group photo in the Conlin Gym, they headed off to the classrooms for their respective presentations. All freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended three 25-minute sessions giving them the opportunity to learn about different careers through the experiences of alumni. Marion and Paul Claudel ’56 became members of The Society of 1869 after informing us that Brother Martin High School is the beneficiary of a planned gift in their name.

Scholarships

Crusaders led by Coach Chris Biehl filled a school bus with water, non-perishable food, baby items, clothing, cleaning supplies, and other necessities to take to St. Charles Catholic High School in LaPlace for the purpose of Hurricane Ida relief.

The Jeffrey E. ’00 and Kristy L. Meyers Scholarship has been established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation (SACF). This scholarship was made possible thanks to a generous gift from Kristy and Jeff Meyer ’00.

Tom Causin has established the Tom & Toni Causin Family Scholarship in the SACF. Tom Causin is the father of Trey Causin ’89 and Philip Causin ’95, and grandfather of Jackson Causin ’23.

Mrs. Janice Williams has established the Louis C. Williams, III ’66 SA Memorial Scholarship in the SACF to honor her late husband. Janice is the mother of Brother Martin Facilities Director Scott Williams ’90.

Mr. & Mrs. Kevin Camarata ’77 have endowed the Kevin M. Camarata ’77 Family Scholarship in the SACF. The St. Aloysius Class of 1964 has endowed the St. Aloysius Class of 1964 Scholarship in the SACF. Tom Nenos ’64 SA and Larry Centola ’64 SA spearheaded a campaign which raised over $80,000 in less than two years.

Asking who was in need of help shortly after Hurricane Ida, our Crusader Wrestling Team took action after hearing that one of our neighbors in St. Charles Parish experienced tremendous damage to their home.

The Golden Crusader Committee has established the Golden Crusader Scholarship in the SACF.

Crusader Cookoff and Homebrew The Crusader Cook-off & Homebrew Competition returned on Sunday, October 24th as alumni, family, and friends enjoyed delicious food and drinks in the backyard and the Terrace. Patrons were treated to 18 dishes and 8 homebrews prepared by competitors. The Crusader Cooking team prepared and served chicken, coleslaw, baked macaroni, hot dogs, sausage, and fries. Laine Buquoi and Melissa Gallagher coordinated desserts. The Class of 2001 sponsored and served in the Beverage Tent featuring Coca-Cola products and an impressive selection of beers.

Eddie Gonzales ’77 emceed the event and Team Serious About Cooking served as a DJ. Guest judges, a video game theater for the kids, and the inaugural Crusader Cornhole Tournament all added to the fun. The Laketilly Marinators & Hydrators Team #1, featuring Rob LaFleur ’92, Bob Vorhoff ’82, Ricky Schaefer ’87, and Danny Fulham ’93 took home first place with their Taco Pain Perdu.

Flag Football Tournament

On Sunday, October 24, alumni gathered on Farley Field to participate in our annual flag football tournament. Five teams participated on the gridiron in a round robin tournament. Crimson Crush, Bryan Dupont ’90, Connor Linn ’20,

Ben Dussouy ’08, David Dussouy ’98, Frank Caracci ’93 , Justin Clark ’93, Billy Davis ’88, Earl Layrisson ’96, Joey Mancuso, and Sean Dimak, showed their dominance as they won the tournament for the fourth time and raised the

Alumni Trophy. Steven Saucier ’89 and members of the Kenner Officials Association officiated the tournament. After, team members, family, and the officials dined at the Crusader Cook-off.

Crusader Cornhole Tournament

The inaugural Crusader Cornhole Tournament took place during the Crusader Cook-off. Billy Davis ’88 and Jody Heap ’86 were the tournament champions.

Robbie Rabb directed the tournament and is confident that this event will become very popular.

Wrestling Lettermen Reunion The Brother Martin Wrestling community gathered in mid-December for their annual reunion.

First, alumni, families and friends watched the Crusaders defeat Rummel in a dual meet in The Conlin Gym. Later, everyone gathered at Mopho for complimentary food and drinks. Head Coach Andrew Nicola thanked attendees for their support, encouraged them to stay connected to the program, and gave a preview of the remainder of the season. Trivia Night XII-The Return brought members of the Brother Martin community back to the Benson Mall in mid-August. Seventeen teams competed for the coveted title of “Trivia Champs” while enjoying food prepared by Brother Martin Food Services and cold beverages. Challenge Entertainment and Live Trivia (James Maumus ’89 & Jeff Maumus ’97) sponsored the event along with Missy and Michael Collins ’88, and A-1 Appliance, Bedding & Furniture – David Grego ’73.

Debby Gaudet’s Screen Actors Studios were crowned champions and they were awarded a gift card to Katie’s Restaurant and their name will be placed on the Alumni Trophy for the third time!

Holiday Home Tour The Ladies of the Shield recently hosted their annual Holiday Home Tour, taking guests on tours of beautiful New Orleans homes decorated in time for the holidays. Parents, alumni, and friends donned their ‘merry and bright’ attire while they ‘flocked to Flamingo’ to tour homes in Lake Vista.

The Patron Party kicked off the event with sounds of the season and a variety of cuisine at the home of Gia and Charles Blanchard (Christian ’13) and shared the backyard of Susan and Jeff Coco (Clay ’11 and Jack ’17). The tour included the homes of Curt Kronlage (Carter ’14 and Canon ’25), Roberta Stewart and Michael Martin, Donna and Robert Bertel ’75, and Yvonne and Jimmy McCulla ’74 (Jeb ’04).

In addition, guests had the opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping with Nola Gifts and Décor and Kendra Scott, where a part of the proceeds were donated to Brother Martin High School.

All funds raised continue to benefit the Ladies of the Shield Endowment.

Our LSU Crusaders received a visit from the Alumni Office in early October.

Brad Duplechain, Science Dept. member and Head Track & Field Coach, Justin Fleetwood, Director of Strategic Planning for Advancement, and Kenny Spellman ’84, Advancement & Alumni Director, traveled to LSU to see our young alumni. Alumni shared their college experience, reminisced about their time on Elysian Fields, and filled out a brief survey about their “college readiness” and their college plans. Brother Martin items were given away and all were invited back to campus and encouraged to stay in touch. The Crusaders have a strong presence at LSU and many are involved in school organizations ranging from athletics to service to student government.

The Mandeville/Covington Chapter gathered for the first time in over two years in mid-November at the Columbia St. Tap Room. Alumni and guests enjoyed complimentary food and soft drinks while sharing stories and “catching up”.

Alumni Director Kenny Spellman ’84 welcomed everyone, thanked Alumni Veterans for their service on Veterans Day, gave school updates, and invited all to visit campus. Academic Assistant Principal Debbie Broussard and her husband Mike ’69 SA were in attendance. After a group photo, Joe Macaluso ’45 played a rousing rendition of the fight song as everyone sang along.

There are over 1,300 alumni residing in the Mandeville/Covington area and future events are in the plans.

Alumni In The News 1960

Corrado Giacona II SA, president and CEO, Giacona Corp. has been inducted into the Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans Business Hall of Fame. This honor recognizes worthy businesspeople, who have embraced the spirit of entrepreneurship in our community and have contributed significantly in their profession.

1970

Paul Arrigo, President and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge, will retire in 2022. Paul Arrigo is proud of his early upbringing in the Gentilly neighborhood. A graduate of the University of New Orleans, he knew early on that a career in the hospitality industry would be long-term. He got his start at the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau, better known today as New Orleans & Company. While there, he perfected his sales approach and worked for one of the tourism industry’s most well-respected leaders, Ed McNeill. McNeill would go on to appoint Arrigo to oversee the New Orleans CVB’s first satellite office in Washington, D.C. In 1997, he relocated from our nation’s capital to Louisiana’s Capital City to serve as Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the Baton Rouge Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, better known today as Visit Baton Rouge. He also earned one of the industry’s highest achievements, becoming a Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME). In 2002, he became the agency’s next President and CEO. He was responsible for transforming the Baton Rouge area into a tourism destination. During the last 20 years, the city has seen exponential growth in the number of meetings and conventions secured and welcomed, as well as an increase in domestic and international leisure visitors.

Eddie Robinson ’88 has been named Alabama State head football coach. Eddie is an Alabama State alumnus and former NFL linebacker. While at Alabama State he was a three-time All-SWAC selection, accumulated 233 tackles and 11 sacks and was a part of ASU’s 1991 SWAC Championship team and winner of the Heritage Bowl. He was selected in the second round (50th overall) of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. Eddie started 11 seasons in the NFL with the Oilers/Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills, recording 608 total tackles, 23 sacks and six interceptions. He appeared in Super Bowl XXXIV with the Titans. In 1998, he became the youngest individual to be inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame at 28 years old. Eddie has spoken to our students on campus many times and he donated his “50-Year Super Bowl Anniversary” football to us.

Hillar C. Moore III, Baton Rouge District Attorney, will receive the Calogero Justice Award presented by the Louisiana Bar Foundation at an event in April 2022. Recognition is given to those individuals who, by reason of his or her professional activities, have distinguished themselves in their chosen profession and have brought credit and honor to the legal profession and an individual or organization for a significant contribution to the Louisiana justice system.

Mark Romig, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for New Orleans & Company, has been granted the Order of Civil Merit

by King Felipe VI of Spain. Romig assisted the city in coordinating the king’s visit during the city’s tricentennial in 2018.

Mike Saucier, founder of Gulf States Real Estate Services, has been elected to St. Tammany Parish Chamber Board. He will assist in accomplishing the Chambers’ mission to promote and support businesses in the parish.

Donald A. Sauviac, Jr. has returned from North Dakota and has become a domestic violence staff attorney with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services – Northshore.

Carlos Gacharna, United Airlines Pilot, is moving from domestic flying on the Airbus 320 to Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, their newest and most modern wide body aircraft.

Sean Doublet opened Neutral Ground Brewing Company in Fort Worth, TX. After numerous delays due to the pandemic, NGBC opened in March 2021. Neutral Ground was just named one of the top 5 breweries in Fort Worth by Fort Worth Weekly Magazine.

Neutral Ground Brewing Company’s signature beer is the King Cake beer, served in a glass rimmed with purple, green, and gold sugar.

Mike Begg ’77 and Barry Lemoine ’81 collaborated on The Advantages of Whiskey over Dogs which was selected 2nd Runner-up Best Screenplay of the 2021 Beverly Hills Film Festival®.

Kevin heads to multiple parishes found across Louisiana to explore dishes and unique flavor profiles associated with each area of the state.

Jarrod Larose Lowe Lowe grew up in Metairie from a massive family. His family hosts a dynasty of esteemed high school wrestlers, many were state champions. Jarrod wants a sneak peak of how the legal profession works and said that reading about it can only get you so far, so he’s excited to get some real-world experience at Casey Cowley, LLC. Connor Larose also grew up in Metairie. He will be starting his sophomore year at LSU in the fall as a pre-law student, planning to obtain an undergraduate degree in psychology. He is excited to help people in our community, hear their stories, and discover how the law can support them. Crusader Rugby

Gary Giepert ’80 played varsity football for Bob Conlin for three years. He played cornerback as a sophomore and junior, then moved to inside linebacker his senior year. Then he walked on at LSU. “After three or four weeks, I realized that most of the football players were not there to get an education. Since I wasn’t going to make money playing football, I quit the team.”

A few months later, an encounter with a 1979 Brother Martin grad changed his life. “In the Gary Giepert ’80 spring of ’81, I met Timmy Martin walking to class. When I told him I was no longer playing football, he asked me to come out for LSU’s rugby club team. I knew nothing about the game, but I went to the Thursday practice and two days later played in the game at Spring Hill College in Mobile.”

Gary played five years for LSU, including his time in law school. In 1983, he was selected for the Eastern Rugby Union U-23 team. He continued playing for the ERU through the mid-90s. In 1985, he was named to the U.S. All American team. He was also selected to the US Jr. Eagle team that toured Europe.

When he moved back to New Orleans in 1988, Gary played for the New Orleans Rugby Football Club, captaining the team in ‘89. He has visited multiple continents as a member of U.S. teams in international competition.

Gary and other local rugby players talked about starting high school programs for years. Finally, he and club teammate Tripp McCormack organized a team at Brother Martin in March 2002 when Gary’s son Jonathan (’05) was a freshman.

He later coached his younger son Stephen (’07) as well. Gary has served as commissioner of the Louisiana High School Rugby League since its inception in 2002.

“The initial three high school clubs were Brother Martin, Jesuit, and Shaw. The Brother Martin team was mostly seniors. We had a lot of wrestlers and a few football players, so we were a big athletic team. We played each opponent twice. Then the top two teams played in the state final. We beat Jesuit in a close game. We were the only high school rugby teams in Louisiana and possibly in the Deep South.”

The local league has grown and regressed. At its height, eleven teams competed. “Now it’s four and possibly six.”

Jerry Malina has been Gary’s assistant coach for 18 years. Fathers who played rugby and have sons on the team also help coach.

The experience of Matthew Mang (’04) is typical of the players on the early Crusader teams. “My good friend and classmate Robert Terese talked me into playing. I had essentially zero knowledge or experience about the game other than my thinking that it was a serious contact sport played without pads by hooligans. I had no idea how beautiful the game really was, and I was instantly hooked. We were a team of first and second year players, but we built an instant brotherhood. Coach Giepert was an incredible leader who, despite his age, was one of the fittest, hardest-hitting players on the field during practices.”

For those not familiar with rugby, a brief explanation of the rules is in order. A high school rugby match consists of two 35-minute halves. The 15 players on each side are divided into forwards and backs. When a substitute enters the game, the player he replaced may not return to the game.

A runner may lateral or hand off the ball backwards but not pass it forward.

There are no downs and no yardage to gain for a first down. When a runner is

Cody Dick with the ball, John Rink next to him, and Jonathan Cohn in background against Jesuit in 2020. tackled, he must release the ball. Nearby players from both teams try to grab it. If an opponent gains possession of the ball, the defensive team goes on offense.

A team scores five points when one of its players grounds the ball behind the opponent’s try line (goal line). The scoring team then attempts a two-point conversion by kicking the ball through the posts from the angle where the try was made. When a team commits a penalty, the other team has options for resuming play, including kicking a penalty goal worth three points.

Mang recalls: “I was lucky enough to be a part of the storied 2004 Crusader team. We had a great deal of success against nearly all other local and statewide high school rugby clubs except for Jesuit, who had been a powerhouse for years.” The Blue Jays won the first meeting, but Martin got another shot at them in the state finals. “We went toe to toe with Jesuit the entire game.

I vividly remember scoring on what should have been the winning try in the final moments of that game. We were in a scrum about 10 yards from Jesuit’s goal line, when Robert called an ‘eighty-eight.’ I got the ball and took off toward the goal line when I was met by several Jesuit defenders. I ran through a few of them and reached the try zone, falling down on the ball and touching it down for the score. An immediate pile-on occurred, and by the time the referee could make it over, the ball was out, and the Jesuit defenders claimed they had ‘held it up’ before it touched down. The referee called it a non-try and that was the game. I remember Coach Giepert running over to me on the side of the pitch, asking me, ‘Did they hold it up?’ I told him no. I had scored. He gave me a bear hug, telling me and the rest of the team how proud he was of us.

“Despite the heartbreaking loss to Jesuit in State, we qualified to play in the Southern High School Rugby Regional championship in Savannah GA. I scored a try in that game, and we won, advancing to the National High School Championship in Fort Worth, TX–a double-elimination tournament.

Nationals was an incredible experience. Our first game was against a prior national champion, Xavier High School, an elite New York City private school.

We got crushed. Our next opponent was an experienced high school club from (continued on page 34) Century II  33

However, in a hard-fought battle, we beat them to advance in the tournament.

Our third and final game was against another past national champion club. We fought hard but lost in the final game of our championship run.”

The 2006 team lost to Jesuit in the state championship match on a penalty kick as Andre Cook passes to Tyler Ancalade against time expired. A member of St. Paul’s that team, Cullen Glennon (’07), was selected the next year for a U19 USA South team that played in Florida against a traveling international school. Although he didn’t get any playing time that year, he earned a spot on the U20 Junior Eagle team the next year that competed for the Junior World Championship in Nairobi, Kenya. Then he was selected on the U.S. team that lost to Romania in the finals the next year. Cullen says, “In the four-year span that started with Brother Martin, I played competitive rugby across one quarter of the U.S. states and two continents. I teamed with or against professionals that would compete at the highest level of the sport in Europe, Asia, and Africa.”

One of Gary’s fondest memories from playing football at Brother Martin came in his sophomore year. “That 1977 team was comprised of a group of overachieving seniors, who were picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Catholic league. In the last game of the season, we faced the high flying Shaw Eagles. No one gave Brother Martin a chance to win that game, but Coach Conlin and the Crusaders felt otherwise. Before the game, he read us a poem entitled ‘It’s All in a State of Mind.’ It ends with these lines: ‘Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins is the fellow who thinks he can.’ We defeated Shaw 14-7 for a share of the Catholic League title and a trip to the playoffs.

“Fast forward to the 2010 rugby state playoffs. Prior to the game, I read the same poem that Coach Conlin had read to the ’77 team.”

Let a member of that team, Matthew Quitzau (‘10), take the story from there.

“We were ranked fourth and played top ranked Shaw in the first round. They had steamrolled most teams that year, and we knew our chances were slim to make it to the championship. The game was physical and low scoring. We had a number of try line stands inside the five as they tried to punch the ball in with their massive forwards.

“I remember Michael Nilsen (‘11) missing the conversion kick after our first try and hoping that it wouldn’t come back to haunt us.

“We scored a try late in the game, touching the ball down about three yards

off the left touch line. We were excited, but there were a couple of things we didn’t realize as Michael walked back his kick to get a wide enough window to try to squeeze the ball through the goal posts. First, it was the end of regulation, and Michael’s kick was the last play. Second, we were down two points. There were no score boards on the field to allow us to keep track of time and points, and none of us Brendan Scripter runs with the ball in the realized the importance of 2020 match against Jesuit. his almost impossible kick.

He brought it back well past the 25m mark, teed it up, and kicked it through with a perfect draw. It was amazing.

“Shaw kicked to us in a ‘first goal wins’ sudden death overtime, and we got through maybe a phase or two before turning the ball over. Shaw started moving the ball well on us. The scrum half threw the ball out to the backs, and I knew that if they found an opening or a crease, the game would be over. The flyhalf passed to the inside center, and the inside center tossed a pass that Tyler Burke (‘10) intercepted and took to the house for the win.”

Just as the ‘77 win propelled Brother Martin to the playoffs, the 2010 win propelled the Crusaders into the State Rugby Finals.

The formation of the professional NOLA Gold team in 2017 by the founder of the original Archbishop Shaw rugby squad has been a shot in the arm to high school programs because more students know about the game. NOLA Gold players have come to practices at the schools to share their expertise with the young players.

Led by a strong senior class, the 2021 Crusaders finally won their second state championship, beating St. Paul’s in the finals 33-19 at the NOLA Gold stadium on Airline Highway. Coach Giepert says, “They were a great group of guys. The captain was Sam Vallejos, who had played since his sophomore year. Other leaders were John Rink, who was fast and well-built. If he got the ball outside, he usually scored. A first time player, Jacob Schmidt, is a really tough kid. He scored one of our trys in the finals. Toward the end of the game, he caught the ball and burst through the line. I thought St. Paul’s fast little fullback would make the tackle. Since there was no one supporting Jacob from our side, we’d lose the ball if he was tackled. But Jacob turned on the after burners and made an angle to the corner and scored. Our last try was made possible by two juniors. Tyler Encalade off-loaded to Andrew Lindstrom, who went in for the clinching score.”

Vallejos, Rink, and Schmidt were joined on the All-State Rugby team by four more seniors: Brandon Bourg, Artie Dogaglou, Aiden Haab, and Hayden Tubbs.

The first use of the phrase “ ’Round the Bend” in our publications dates back to 1951 in The Aloysian, the St. Aloysius student newspaper. “ ’Round the Bend” was a common colloquialism in the New Orleans area describing future events in the city.

In 1969, The Martin Crusader, Brother Martin’s student newspaper, adopted the phrase in its inaugural publication.

Then in 1990, to honor our student publications, the Century II changed their upcoming events list to “’Round the Bend.”
