The Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association and the Crimson & Gold Network hosted the annual Senior Lunch in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace in early May as the Class of 2019 celebrated their final day of class. Alumni dads and grandfathers of current seniors were invited along with members of the Alumni Board.

Sysco New Orleans and Brother Martin Food Services prepared and served a steak dinner assisted by members of the Brother Martin faculty.

Campus News Students Altar Servers of the Year Five Crusaders were recognized as Altar Servers of the Year by their respective Parishes. Archbishop Gregory Aymond ’67 CJ presented each honoree with a medal and certificate at a ceremony in April.

Patrick Corcoran ’20 - St. Edward the Confessor, Metairie Hans Fleming ’19 - St. Catherine of Siena, Metairie Spencer Hyde ’21 - St. Angela Merici, Metairie Ian Kot ’19 - St. Joan of Arc, LaPlace Johnathan Wartt ’23 - St. Anthony of Padua, New Orleans Blaise Falcon ’20 was recognized with the Archdiocese Outstanding Youth Award.

Cameron Washington ’19 was selected as a 2019 Cox Inspirational Student Hero. This recognizes young people who have defied the odds and overcome academic and life challenges.

Patrick Evans ’19, a two-time Wrestling State Champion, received the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for the state of Louisiana. The DSHSEA recognizes and celebrates the nation’s most outstanding high school senior male wrestlers for their excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service. The state winners are evaluated and selected on the basis of three criteria: success and standout performances and sportsmanship in wrestling; review of GPA and class rank, academic honors and distinctions; and participation in activities that demonstrate commitment to character and community. Patrick will attend the University of Virginia in the fall to continue his academic and wrestling career.

Brady Faust ’19 was selected as a 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl and National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete! His academic achievements include Principal’s Honor Roll; Alpha Honor Roll; Brother Martin Academic Scholarship. He was a three-year letterman and starter; all-district; all-metro; all-state honorable mention; set school records for receptions in a game and for punt return yards in a game; LHSAA All-State Academic Football Team and Bob Conlin Award Winner. He volunteers at Ozanam Inn and with the Miracle League and will be attending the University of Southern Mississippi this fall.

National Junior Honor Society

The 2018-2019 National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Members were honored in an induction ceremony in May. The NJHS membership is by invitation only for 8th and 9th-grade students on the Principal’s Honor Roll (4.0 or above GPA) or Alpha Honor Roll (3.50 to 3.99 GPA) for the current year.

Campus Leadership Liturgy In mid-May our community gathered to celebrate the annual “Call to Leadership Liturgy” Celebrant Father Paul Hart ’70 with the Class of 2019 transitioned leadership to the Class of 2020.

Miracle League

Brother Martin High School Baseball and Football teams hosted their annual Crusaders’ Miracle League on E. A. Farley field. It was an ‘all-star weekend’ for participants to play baseball with their friends and favorite players.

These games are designed to give disabled youth an opportunity to compete alongside high school players and learn different aspects of the game while being able to be included in fun sports activities.

Campus News Baseball

The Crusaders won the 9-5A District Championship and finished with a record of 26-6 and reached the Division I State semifinals.

Tennis

The New Orleans Advocate named six Crusaders to the All-District Team: Brady Faust ’19 , Cole Stromboe ’20, Joe Delaney ’20, Tré Morgan ’20 and Brennan Stuprich ‘20. Stuprich was named Player of the Year and Coach Jeff Lupo ’92 was named Coach of the Year.

Football 2019 All-District Football Team Offensive Lineman - Adam Bourgeois ’21, Defensive End - Noah Labbe ’20, Defensive Back - Davonn Moore ’20, and Running Back - Chris Smith ’20.

Garrett Mmahat ’22, quarterback, was selected as the FOX 8’s Player of the Week. Garrett was recognized for his four touchdown passes against Scotlandville on November 22nd.

Golf The Crusaders claimed the Catholic League title after defeating Jesuit and Holy Cross in a district 9-5A match-up. The golfers advanced through District and Regionals and placed 8th in the State Championship.

Lacrosse

The Crusaders claimed the District and Regional Championships with an undefeated record and placed runner-up in the State Championship.

Matthew Armbruster ’21 claimed the individual State Championship title. Doubles teams of Hunter Kael ’19 and Jack Robinson ‘21, Sterling Heindel ’20 and Evan Walker ’21, and Vincent Asaro ’22 and Jude Edwards ’22 plus Singles player Ethan Bosch ’20 all contributed.

Track & Field The team finished 5th in the State Meet.

Hunter Appleton ’19 claimed both the 1600m and 3200m titles to cap off his career with a total of 7 individual state championships as a distance runner at Brother Martin. Cade Litolff ’19 finished Appleton Litolff 3rd in the 3200m run for his first ever topfive finish in a state championship and the 4x800m relay finished 5th running a postseason-best time of 8:08.04. Hunter Appleton ’19 and Cade Litolff ’19 were named to the 2019 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-State Track & Field Team.

Campus The Crusaders finished the season as State Runners-Up with a record of 11-6-1.

Two Crusaders were named to the LHSLL All-State Lacrosse Honors teams. State Defensive MVP, Jake Bodino ’19 was awarded All-State Goalie on the LHSLL first team. Joseph Sentillies ’20 was awarded All-State Defense on the LHSLL second team. 2019 All-District team-1st Team: Jake Bodino ’19, Joseph Sentilles ’20 and Ryan Templet ’19. 2nd Team: Drew Dodd ’19, Cayden McCoy ’20, Luke Rau ’20, Kevin Sentilles ’20 and Will Walsten ’19 Earlier this year, the Brother Martin Lacrosse program had their State Defensive MVP Goalie, Jake Bodino ’19, sign to play Lacrosse next year at the University of Montevallo.

The Crusader Rugby Team, under the direction of Gary Giepert ’80 successfully advanced to the State semifinals, eventually placing 3rd in the State Tournament.

Summer Camp Future Crusaders experienced the Crimson and Gold life this past summer. Summer Camp activities included sports, art, reading, games/ puzzles, computer, swimming, movies, field trips and more. Specialty Camps featured Basketball Camp, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Study Skills & Test Prep, and Wrestling.

Extr acurricular Academic Games Six members of our Academic Games team traveled to Orlando to participate in the 2019 National Tournament. After four days of competition in the games of On-Sets, Presidents, Equations, and Propaganda, the team members all came back with awards. Daniel Winstein ’22 was on a conglomerate team that placed 5th in Propaganda. The team of Kyle Borde ’22, Matthew Lindner ’22, Logan Millet ’22, Landin Sanborn ’22 and Anthony Wei ’22 took home 5th place in Equations, 4th in On-Sets, 2nd in Presidents, and 5th place in overall Sweepstakes.

Campus News Band

Chorus

The Brother Martin Percussion Ensemble performed a concert for Crusader families and friends to enjoy in mid-May. The concert showcased the incredible talents of our bandsmen and their level of expertise while on stage. The concert performance was under the direction of Chris Bailey ’86, Assistant Band Director.

Anthony Dilorenzo ’21, Mark Hastings ’21 and Darren Martino ’21 made the 2019 LMEA All-State Band. These three band members were selected through an audition process with the Louisiana Music Educators Association.

Beach Volleyball The Crusaders captured their 5th Straight League Championship Title.

The Brother Martin Chorus, under the direction of Kevin Caparotta ’88, performed their annual spring concert at St. Catherine of Siena Church in May. The concert highlighted the special celebration of the 50th anniversary of our chorus program. Kevin presented awards to students and thanked them for their dedication to our music program.

Open House On Thursday, November 7TH Brother Martin High School hosted its annual Open House. Over 500 prospective students and their families visited campus to learn more about the Crusader Spirit!

The night started with guests entering through the Ridgley Center before heading to the Branton Chapel where they were greeted by Assistant Principal for Admissions Carlos Bogran III ’99. Inside the Branton Chapel, families were welcomed by President Greg Rando ‘77 and Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00. Kyle Robbins ’20 and Jeffrey Lupo ’24 spoke about the ‘Brother Martin Experience’ from students’ points of view.

School tours, conducted by current students, showcased our state of the art facility featuring the newly renovated Library and Benson Mall. Student tour guides, with the help of faculty members, parents, and alumni along the route, were also able to share important information about our school’s history, academics, extracurricular activities, athletics, religious values, personal attention, friendly discipline, and a host of other topics.

Career Day

Brother Martin hosted its annual Career Day in mid-September. Kenny Spellman ‘84, Advancement and Alumni Director, welcomed all of our alumni in the ‘Crusader Cafe’ located in the newly renovated Tom & Gayle Benson Mall.

After their welcome and coffee, all alumni gathered for a group photo before heading off to their classrooms for their presentations.

All freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors attended three 25-minute sessions. Each session gave students the opportunity to learn about different careers from alumni representing over 50 different professions. In addition to the sessions, additional alumni agreed to meet individually with juniors and seniors to share in-depth information about their careers in a one-on-one setting. After the sessions, alumni gathered in The Mall for lunch.

J. Donald Garvey ’50 Named Alumnus of the Year

Don and Marge Garvey J. Donald Garvey, St. Aloysius Class of 1950, has been selected by the Board of Directors at Brother Martin High School as the recipient of the Senator Allen J. Ellender Award as the 2020 Alumnus of the Year. The announcement was made at the Alumnus of the Year Cocktail Party held at the home of Karen and Chuck Stall ’76. Past recipients and their wives enjoyed delicious fare, shared stories, and welcomed Don and his wife Marge. 2019 Alumnus of the Year, Milton M. Dureau, Jr. ’69 CJ, officially welcomed Mr. Garvey to the group with a toast. The Alumnus of the Year Mass and Lunch will be held on March 21st and 22nd.

Don and his wife Marge have supported the Brother Martin High School mission and that of many organizations dear to them in impactful ways. In recent years, their efforts have been focused mostly on his charitable giving, both financially and of their personal time. This has manifested itself through many hours of volunteer service on committees at Brother Martin, St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and other organizations. Don and Marge are Order of St Louis Medal recipients and received the Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis.

Don has three children, Dr. Kim Williams, Jim, Dan, and Tim and step-son Dr. Michael Christner ’91.

Don and Marge have 17 grandchildren ranging in age from 19 to 7 years old including Brandon Williams ’18.

Don, the son of Thomas and Loretta Garvey, grew up with his six brothers and sisters in a small house in Gentilly. In keeping with a good Catholic upbringing, they attended weekly Mass and grammar school at St. Leo the Great. Don’s strong desire to follow in the footsteps of his brothers led him to St. Aloysius.

Upon graduating high school, Don followed his siblings to another Catholic education institution, Loyola University, from which he graduated with a degree in Accounting. Feeling a strong loyalty to his country in a time in between military wars, Don joined the Army where he put his degree to use by serving in an administrative capacity as an officer.

Chuck Stall ’76, Joe Caruso ’79, David Trepagnier ’83, Ed Holmes ’52, Terry Alarcon ’66 SA, Donald Garvey ’50, Sid Lambert ’64 CJ, David Gallo ’77, Milton Dureau ’69 CJ, Brian Barkemeyer ’79, Augie Gallo ’53 and Mike Kimble ’81 In spite of earning recognition as a marksman on the pistol range, Don felt a calling to the legal division of the Army and spent the final days of his enlistment working in the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps.

At the end of his enlistment, Don made use of his G.I. Bill to return to Loyola, to enroll in and graduate from, Loyola’s School of Law. After graduation, Don put his legal and accounting experience to use by joining with his younger brother, Larry Garvey ’55, to start and run several successful businesses that provided telephone answering service, paging service and eventually cellular telephone service throughout southeast Louisiana and several other

states. Over a roughly 50-year time span, those companies were most commonly known under the name of Radiofone, Inc. Almost as soon as Don began experiencing business success with the Radiofone companies, and at times even before that, Don began acting upon the philanthropic actions that were instilled in him by the Catholic upbringing and education that his parents provided.

Throughout their lifetime Don and Marge have given graciously to many charities. Many of the charities are associated with the Catholic church and thankfully, Brother Martin High School has been a beneficiary of their generosity.

Plus 50 Mass and Reunion Alumni and guests gathered for the annual Plus 50 Mass and Reunion in midAugust. This special evening included reunion festivities for alumni of 51 years or more from St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu.

The evening began with Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel celebrated by Fr. Michael Schneller ’64 SA. Fr. Schneller thanked everyone for welcoming him back to Brother Martin and celebrating the Eucharist with him. He also reflected on his time as a student while reminiscing with alumni.

At the conclusion of Mass, Director of Alumni and Advancement Kenny Spellman ’84 recognized special guests including President Greg Rando ’77, Bro. Neri J. Falgout, S.C. ’46 and Bro. Neal Golden ’57 CJ. ‌Special recognition was also given to classes celebrating anniversaries – The St. Aloysius Classes of 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959, and 1964 and the Cor Jesu Classes of 1959 and 1964. H.L. Boihem ’59 CJ of California was recognized as the alumnus who traveled the farthest to attend the celebration. St. Aloysius 1942 classmates Ellis Quigley and Keith Wheelahan were recognized as alumni from the earliest class.

Following Mass, a reception was held in the Benson Mall catered by Scot Craig ’80 of Katie’s. There was also a chance for classmates to show their school spirit with a cheer led by Class of 1966 SA. The Class of 1964 SA showed their spirit by having the most class representatives in attendance.

display specific exemplary personal qualities.

This year’s social was held at Katie’s in Mid City, which is owned and operated by Scot Craig ’80.

While enjoying a delicious dinner, alumni shared stories. After dinner, Alumni Officer Chris Alley ’08 briefed everyone on current news, encouraged the young alumni to continue striving for excellence and the

Golf Tournament

Class of 1974 Cooking Team The Brother Martin Golf Classic returned to the South Course at Bayou Oaks in City Park on May 17th. Over 200 golfers enjoyed beautiful weather for a day of golf, food, drinks, and camaraderie.

The morning round featured a record 84 golfers who were treated to donuts, breakfast burritos from Fatty Shack, and beverages. The Class of ’74 Cooking Team prepared and lunch along with Blue Runner white beans. Meatball Poboy’s from Katie’s, charbroiled oysters from Mato’s Oysters and served by Pigeon’s Caterers, and po-boys from Bear’s kept the players going on the course. After, Johnny’s Seafood served boiled crawfish along with pasta and jambalaya from the Culinary Crusaders. Team champions were recognized, prizes were given away and players with the “longest drive” and “closest to the hole” were rewarded. The event committee along with an army of volunteers ensured a successful event.

50/150 Alumni Chorus Concert Founding chorus director Mike Cottingham, former director and current Brother Martin President Greg Rando ’77 and current chorus director Kevin Caparotta ’88 directed an emotion-filled concert in celebration of our school’s 50 years. Alumni Chorus members from the classes of 1972 to 2018 joined together for a special night. They performed “Come Again, Sweet Love,” “Prelude to Peace” (in memory of Ben Kuylen ’98), “Down in the Valley,” “Ave Maria,” and more.

Alumnae of Mount Carmel’s Chorale joined in singing “Prelude to Peace” in honor of the collaboration of the two choirs over the 50-year history of the program. Cottingham, Rando and Caparotta thanked the guests for attending while they shared stories from the earlier days of the Chorus program at Brother Martin. Finally, alumni in the audience joined for the singing of “O Sacred Heart.” Following the concert, there was a social at Porter & Luke.

Homecoming and Lettermen Reunions

Football Lettermen Members of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association and guests joined together for the 2019 Homecoming Tailgate and game vs. the Holy Cross Tigers in early November. The Crusaders took home an exciting, 29-28 district win. Prior to the game, an alumni tailgate celebration included Student Ambassadors serving food and refreshments and DJ Bryce Barbaro ’17.

Before kick-off, the cheerleaders, NJROTC Armed Drill Team, the Drumline, and the Crusader Band entertained guests with special performances.

Stephen Lewis ’03 served as master of ceremonies and announced the members of the 2019 Homecoming Court with their student escorts.

Then, alumni football players from the 1989 State Runner-Up and 2014 State Semi-Finalist teams were honored. The 1999 Cross-Country State Championship team,1979, 1984, 1994, 2004 and 2014 State Runners-Up and the 1974 District Championship Cross-Country Teams were also honored. The captains of the 1969 Brother Martin Football Team, Denis Indest ’70 and Ernie Chachere ’70, served as honorary captains for their 50-year anniversary.

During halftime, Miss Chloe Candies was named the 2019 Homecoming Queen and 2019 Alumnus of the Year, Milton Dureau ’69 CJ, presented her crown. Chris Stromboe ’98, Kelly Fiorella ’85, Ron Landry ’86, Hugh Hamilton ’80, Scot Craig ’80, David Villarubia ’70, and Billy Rieger ’95 served as alumni escorts.

After the Crusader victory, alumni and guests continued their celebration at the annual Lettermen Reunion at MoPho. Friends gathered and reminisced about their days in football, cross country, cheerleading, swimming, and NJROTC. In early August members of the Gelpi family gathered for Mass and dedication of the John J. Gelpi, Jr. ’52 Bookstore. John Gelpi, our 2000 Alumnus of the Year, worked in the Bookstore for years. His willingness to return to Brother Martin as a volunteer exhibited his dedication to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Mr. Gelpi is a role model for all alumni and his time, talent and treasure have been a blessing.

Brother Martin High School held its 20th annual Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 1st. It was a beautiful day for the gathering of alumni, families, and friends as participants competed for various titles in 15 categories.

Rob Hymel and Jay Hotard ’82 entertained the crowd with music as Eddie Gonzales ’77 served as the emcee. There were games for the younger fishermen such as a parent-child balloon toss and fish toss. The Class of ’73 Culinary Squad provided a delicious cuisine of fried fish, hush puppies, sno-balls, and more. Team McCrossen, a four-time winner, took home the trophy for the Largest Fish (Non-Gar) with a 45-pound Grouper setting a new rodeo record.

Adding to the event, the Brother Martin Cheerleaders sold “Big Board Raffle” spots and a Parade of Prizes consisting of restaurant gift cards, Brother Martin metal art, a Brother Martin pirogue, and much more.

Alumni Flag Football Tournament Alumni gathered on Farley Field in late September to compete in the annual flag football tournament.

Throwback jerseys were once again utilized donning the sigils of St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin. Six teams hit the field to test their skills, but in the end it was “Team Untouched” consisting of Austin Glahn ’05, Mitch McCloskey ’05, Jeff Beben ’05, Louis Hymel ’05, John Walter ’05, Jordan Glahn ’18, Blake Robbins ’18, Brandon Robbins ’18, and Samer Mosrie ’18 who took home the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Cup. After the games were finished, players and their families were invited to attend the Crusader Cook-off located in the backyard.

Team Untouched

Alumni Softball Game Baseball Alumni gathered on June 1st for our annual Alumni Softball Game. Two squads comprised of alumni from all five decades of Crusader Baseball history honored the 35-year anniversary of the 1984 State Championship baseball team. The teams wore replica t-shirts from that year.

In the end, it was the Grey Team comprised of Barry Albarado ’95, Eddie Coe ’94, Nathan Dean ’10, Andrew Laiche ’05, Stephen Landry ’05, Larry LeBourgeois ’75, Scott Sloan ’06, Matthew Thorne ’05 and Andrew Velez ’06 who came away victorious. Coach Barry Hebert ’74 and Chuck Stall ’02 were on hand to provide updates on the “Cool The Conlin” campaign and the state semi-final run made by this year’s varsity team. After the game, players and their families were invited to enjoy food, music, and refreshments at the Brother Martin Fishing Rodeo in the backyard.

The Marty Hurley Band Endowment honoring Marty Hurley is established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation to support Brother Martin High School. Musician, composer and master teacher, Marty Hurley served for 37 years in service to the students at Brother Martin as Band Director.

Under Mr. Hurley, the Brother Martin Band was a model of excellence, continually achieving superior ratings at LMEA festivals. The purpose of the endowment is to provide financial support for Brother Martin in an area most important to him during his years at the school – the instrumental music program.

2019 Baseball Trip Thirty-seven members of the Brother Martin community traveled to New York for the annual Baseball Trip. The group attended two New York Yankee games vs. the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed the fine dining of NYC. Some took the Brooklyn Pizza Tour, others attended plays or just toured the city. Chris Schully ’84, a Long Island resident, joined the group for dinner and a game.

Crusader Cook-Off & Homebrew Beautiful weather graced the Crusader Cook-off & Homebrew Competition as alumni, family and friends enjoyed delicious food and drinks in the Backyard and the Terrace this past September.

Patrons were treated to 15 dishes and 9 homebrews prepared by competitors. The Crusader Cooking team prepared and served hamburgers, hot dogs and other delicious selections. Laine Buquoi and Melissa Gallagher coordinated desserts and Mario Bogran ’82, Mardi Gras Snowballs NOLA, provided snowballs. The Class of 2001 sponsored and served in the Drink Tent and an army of volunteers ensured a successful event.

Cool temperatures and clear skies favored the players at the Pepsi Tennis Center at City Park in late May. 112 players took to the courts in 9 Ladies’ divisions and 2 Men’s divisions.

The “Parade of Prizes” gave attendees a chance to win hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates, tennis lessons, and various other gifts. The 50/50 sent a lucky winner home with some extra cash. Alumni Highlights Dr. Richard Vath ’70, who has been interim president and chief executive officer of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System since March, was officially named head of the organization.

Richard, a pulmonologist, joined the health system in 2006 and has served recently as its chief transformation officer. He is a former chief medical officer for Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

Richard is a Catholic High School Hall of Fame inductee and his three sons are Catholic High alumni.

Greg Ferrara ’97 has been appointed as the next President and CEO of the National Grocers Association (NGA). Greg has served as the Executive Vice President of the NGA and brings a wealth of experience in the grocery industry having managed his family’s centuryold supermarket in New Orleans before the store was ultimately destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Greg holds a BA in Political Science from Loyola University New Orleans and is a fellow of the prestigious Institute of Politics at Loyola University. He is a graduate of the US Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management and is a graduate of the NGA Executive Leadership Program at Cornell University.

Herb Camet, Jr. ’65 CJ has served as K-12 School Principal in 5 countries including USA, Iraq, Cambodia, Pakistan and Vietnam. He served in the U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Yemen for two years. He has been active in the city of Seattle’s political scene. Herb has a successful blend of teaching, administrative, and business experience in domestic and international settings. He designed, implemented, and managed ELT/ESL programs in 10 countries. He created, developed, organized, administered, staffed, budgeted, and supervised ESL/ELT training program as Director of Training in Thailand for the largest private healthcare system in southeast Asia with 12 hospitals and 3,000 staff members. Herb has a proven ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and assignments simultaneously as he organized and conducted teacher training workshops and seminars in various organizational and intercultural venues in eight countries. He has experience in diverse socio-cultures with work and life experience in 10 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, Yemen, UAE, Germany, Iraq, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Pakistan as well as travel in more than 30 countries worldwide. He has a Master of Arts (M.A.) - Education Administration from the University of New Orleans, a Graduate Studies Teacher Education Program (Teacher Certification) from Tulane University, a Graduate Teaching Fellowship in History from Rice University, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – History from UNO and was the recipient, ‘UNO Distinction in History Award’.

David Nolan SA has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana.

Grady Hurley, Partner at Jones Walker LLC, spoke to Crusaders in Law Studies class. Grady explained many facets of the law including contractual law, mediation and arbitration.

Crusader Daughter Dons Crimson and Gold for Dad, Scott Landry ’75 Megan Warzecha was always, from an early age, inspired by her dad’s running.

She was even a member of the cross country team at her own high school.

For Megan, this was something she was determined to succeed in, setting goals and always striving for better. She and her dad found in running a bond that has endured even now. Once Megan completed college, she began to run again, and currently, she is training for her seventh marathon.

Megan’s dad, Scott Landry ’75, was a member of the Crusader Harriers during his four years at Brother Martin. He ran even after a leg injury resulted in a tumor, surgery and a great deal of rehabilitation. His wife, Marlene, is also no stranger to Brother Martin having been a Battalion Sweetheart and Vice President for the Dionysians Drama Club.

This past April, Scott was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His surgery was quite involved and his recovery is ongoing. To honor her dad, Megan decided she would like to wear a Brother Martin cross country singlet during her 7th Marathon, the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.

According to Megan’s mother, “For the mom of the family, this race was special for me as well. When we saw Meg wearing the crimson and gold with the Landry name on the back (carefully stitched herself) it was one of those full-circle kinds of events.” Megan finished with a time of 3:24:59 enough for her to also qualify for the Boston Marathon in her age group.

AUDUBON by Michael Begg ’77 and Barry Lemoine ’81 was named Best Screenplay winner of the 2019 Louisiana International Film Festival’s screenplay competition. LIFF’s screenplay competition promotes up-and-coming writers and helps further develop skills and relationships that enable them to play a central role in shaping the future of storytelling in Louisiana.

Patrick Earl Ryan ’88 has been named this year’s winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction for his collection of short stories “If We Were Electric” to be published by the University of Georgia Press in fall 2020.

Cedric Palmisano was recognized as a City Business Health Care Hero as a First Responder. Cedric is the Deputy Chief, logistics and Special Operations for the City of New Orleans, Emergency Medical Services.

Dr. Wayne Rupp recently spoke to our AP Art History students and Advanced Art students on the sculptural forms of the Etruscans and Romans. Wayne received a B.A. in Classical Civilizations and English Literature at Loyola University, New Orleans in 1996, an M.A. in Classical Archaeology at the University of Arizona, and finally a second M.A. in Latin and a Ph.D. in Classics from Florida State University in 2007.

Kevin Triggs received the St. Louis Kappa League “Excellence in Mentoring” Award presented by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., St. Louis Alumni Chapter.

Kevin M. Gardner has been appointed to the Board of Directors at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Juan LaFonta spoke to Crusader seniors in Law Studies class. Juan shared his educational and career path that has led to a successful law practice. He fielded questions, gave advice and shared how Brother Martin High School played a role in his success.

Jack Duvernay, President at benefitsone, has been elected as the President of the Louisiana Association of Health Underwriters.

Ryan Bordenave and other staff members from the Downtown Development District, other local groups and approximately 30,615 attendees from the private sector, attended the 2019 ICSC RECon Conference in Las Vegas. The ICSC conference is a global retail real estate trade show. Prior participation at this conference has resulted in many retail brands expanding to Downtown, including MAC Cosmetics, Arhaus, True Religion, and The Art of Shaving.

James Heaslip, Principal Engineer at Heaslip Engineering, was selected as a 2019 Honoree for CityBusiness “Excellence in Construction and Real Estate”.

Joe Lopinto, III ‘94 has been elected to serve his first full term as Sheriff of Jefferson Parish. Joe, a former state representative who’s also an attorney, was elected sheriff back in March of 2018 to fill the remaining term of Newell Norman.

David Widener is the Director of Claims Advisory Services at The American Equity Underwriters, Inc. He began his career in longshore in 2003 with F.A. Richard/American Equity Risk Services, where he was a claims supervisor for eight years. He joined the U.S. Department of Labor as a claims examiner in 2011, and was promoted to District Director six months later, overseeing operations for the Houston District Office. David has a B.S. in finance from Louisiana State University and is a credentialed mediator for the state of the Texas.

Scott Wolfe, Jr., CEO at Levelset, ranked in the top five best CEOs in the U.S., according to women working in small to midsize companies with fewer than 500 employees. USA TODAY compiled data from female staffers and found the CEOs who ranked highest for women including the heads of software and IT companies.

1999

Jean-Paul Detiege received his license as a Professional Engineer from the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Jean-Paul currently works as a Mechanical Engineer at Intralox, specializing in structural analysis of plastic parts. Intralox is the inventor and leading manufacturer of modular plastic conveyor belts.

Justin Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting, has been named a finalist for 2019 SEMA Gen-III Innovator of the Year. According to SEMA, the Gen-III Innovator of the Year recognizes individuals whose work is changing the way the automotive aftermarket does business. He or she may have been the first to act on a new trend, invented an original product or devised and implemented ideas that better suit the current automotive marketplace.

Phillip V. Parry has passed the American Board of Neurological Surgeons Oral Examination to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a fully board certified Neurosurgeon. He is in practice in Atlanta, GA.

Chris Franklin has been named WWL-TV station’s new chief meteorologist. Chris attended the University of South Alabama, where he received a degree in meteorology. His career took him to Kansas before bringing him back home. He is an award-winning meteorologist who lives in River Ridge with his wife, Amy, and two kids, Lucy and Henry.

Carl Zornes, Director of Digital Media at Georgia Public Broadcasting, won a GABBY award for Best Mobile App from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters in September 2019.

Jordan Eagan has been elected ex-officio to the Board of Trustees of Stuart Hall School for Boys.

Steve McGovern has been promoted to project executive at Palmisano where he will work to solidify the company’s presence in the health care market.

Malik Muhammed defended his doctoral dissertation “Saving Space: A Spatial Recasting of the Divine/Human Encounter for an Urban Theology” in April. He graduated this past May from Fordham University in New York City with a PhD in Systematic Theology.

Will Monson has been hired as Employment Digital Content Specialist for Ochsner Hospital System.

Brett Napier, the business development manager for Jones Walker’s maritime and labor and employment practice groups, serves on 2019-2020 board of directors for the New Orleans chapter of the American Marketing Association. Brett is the Immediate Past President and Vice President of Programming.

B.J. Barbre, Natural Environments Engineer at Jacobs Technology, received the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal presented by NASA. This prestigious medal is awarded to both Government and non-Government individuals for exceptional scientific contributions toward achievement of the NASA mission.

The award is given for individual efforts that have resulted in a key scientific discovery or resulted in contribution(s) of fundamental importance in this field or significantly enhanced understanding of the field. Scientific contributions typically result from reasoned investigations or studies of phenomena using collected data and observations, current scientific theories and formulae, and the scientific method and/or other formal techniques, to attain enduring principles.

Derek Plucienski has been selected as Head Men’s Golf Coach for McNeese State University. Most recently he served as assistant men’s golf coach at Louisiana-Lafayette. Prior to joining the ULL staff, Derek served as the Tournament and Operations Manager for the Gulf States Section PGA from 2016-17 directing over 25 Section events annually. Before then, he spent a year with the APT Professional Golf Tour as a Tournament Operations Director overseeing 26 events during the season.

Austin Bourgeois graduated from U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Cory Gaconi, Southeastern Louisiana senior pitcher, was named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year. Corey graduated with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average as a marketing major. The 2019 Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year finished the year with a 7-3 record and a 2.57 earned run average. At the inaugural Lion Choice Awards, he was honored as the graduating SLU male student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average. Corey was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned Google Cloud Academic All-District honors. Corey signed with the Mets organization and is pitching in their minor league system with the Brooklyn Cyclones. They recently won the New York-Penn League championship.

Jonathan Parker has been names assistant baseball coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Jonathan played two years at Jones County, where he was team captain twice and helped lead his team to the NJCAA Division II national championship as a sophomore. He was named MVP of the national championship tournament and was on the All-Tournament Team. Jonathan recently graduated with a bachelor’s in general studies and a minor in business and marketing.

Rod Teamer, Jr., defensive back for the Los Angeles Chargers, was nominated for Pepsi and the NFL’s Rookie of the Week, in week 7.

The Order of St. Louis IX award was established in 1975 to honor those members of the laity who have contributed their time and talents to the church. In the past 44 years, more than 10,000 men and women have received the medallion as a token of thanks for their Christ-like service to the church.

Hammond/Ponchatoula Chapter In mid-October, Kenny Spellman ’84, Chris Alley ’08 and Brad Duplechain visited Louisiana State University for the annual Brother Martin Alumni Day at LSU. Over 40 alumni visited and filled out a survey about their college plans and their preparedness while grabbing some Brother Martin swag. The young alumni were encouraged to stay in touch and visit whenever they travel home.

Dallas Chapter Members of the Dallas Alumni Chapter gathered at Dodie’s Reef in Dallas, TX. Dallas alumni were invited to a “New Orleans Style” social with boiled crawfish, gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, salad, bread pudding, and drinks.

Saints Trip to LA

The annual Saints Trip headed west this year. Members of the Brother Martin community traveled to Los Angeles where they were joined by some of our west coast alumni and friends. While in LA, the group dined together, toured the city, viewed the LSU game and tailgated before heading into the game to watch the Saints and Rams. In late June alumni gathered for the annual Tampa Rays Suite Party hosted by Robert Bennett ’79, Director of Ticket Operations for the Rays. As the Rays played the Texas Rangers, Barry Hebert ’74, Alumni Officer gave a report on the new air conditioning system in the Conlin Gym. TAMPA CHAPTER SAINTS WEEKEND Alumni and friends gathered in Tampa for a “Saints Weekend” celebration in mid-November. On Saturday night, Jill and Troy Manthey ‘84, President of Yacht Starship Dining Cruises, Melissa and Tristan Manthey ’88, hosted a private Jill and Troy Manthey ’84 party aboard one of their yachts. Attendees enjoyed food and drinks and school representatives Barry Hebert ’74 and Kenny Spellman ’84 updated everyone on school activities.

On Sunday, Coach Hebert set up early for a Brother Martin Tailgate Party outside of Raymond James Stadium. Over 60 attendees enjoyed food and drinks, listened to music and appreciated the comfort of two RV’s compliments of Candace and Joe Engolia ’73 and Friends of Brother Martin Angie and Steve Bonner. Fred and Amy Berlin Daner added to the party with a delicious selection of food including jambalaya, muffulettas and meatball sandwiches.

To top off the day, the Saints provided a 34-17 victory over the Bucs.

The second round playoff game came down to a final shot. If it drops in, Martin’s season is over. Following an all-too-familiar script, the Crusaders exploded in the second quarter to pull out of a 10-10 tie to lead 39-23 at the half. When the Owls cut only one point off the lead heading into the final quarter, Martin’s chances looked great. But Chalmette made another one of its patented second half rallies.

With 3:14 to go, the BM lead had shrunk to nine. At the 1:56 mark, it was only 55-53. But a field goal and a free throw stretched the advantage to five. But the Owls wouldn’t go away and tied the score with 0:13 showing. Alexander was fouled seven seconds later and made the first free throw. When he missed the second, the Owls hurried down the court but missed an off-balance jumper from just inside the foul line.

The Crusaders now faced St. Aug. with a chance to win the school’s first district championship since the 1974 Rick Robey state champions. Bryan Lazare began his Times-Picayune article on the game like this: “Brother Martin played somewhat out of character Tuesday night at Tulane gym. Normally a team whose rebounding strength overcomes some shooting and ball-handling deficiencies, the Crusaders took great care of the basketball in the District 11-AAAA championship game with St. Augustine.” The result was a 76-70 win (in regulation no less!). Martin shot a blazing 60% from the field (27 of 45) and committed only ten turnovers, including just three in the second half. “We’ve been making every game close,” said Vitrano, “but in this one we opened up a little lead and held it. … Then also, Briant got hot in the third quarter. He hit a few baskets in a row to get us going.”

That’s when the Crusaders scored six in a row to take control. They put the game away when they stretched the lead to ten with 3:23 remaining. Martin missed a few free throws down the stretch but committed no turnovers.

LHSAA regulations required playoff games to be played at neutral sites. So the Crusaders “hosted” East St. John at Tulane in the bi-district round. Once again Martin had to withstand a late charge as the Wildcats cut a 10-point lead to two with 2:14 left. But Alexander, who led the scoring with 24, sank five of seven free throws in the final minutes to ice the win.

That put the Crusaders face to face Eric Alexander ’79 Mark Petteway ’79 with the CYO champions from Booker T. Washington. The Lions were still coached by Ted Washington. His 1970-71 team, in their first season in the LHSAA, just missed providing New Orleans fans with a dream matchup against Brother Martin. They lost in the semifinals to Woodlawn, whom the Crusaders defeated for their second state title in a row. The first meeting of the ’78-79 teams in December required overtime to determine a winner. This one did too. The Lions held Alexander to his worst game of the season – just four points.

Nevertheless, Briant (15 points) and Petteway (14) spearheaded the Crusader effort that erased a five-point halftime deficit to tie the game heading into the final eight minutes. Defense prevailed, with each team scoring only six points to necessitate Martin’s sixth overtime of the season. With the game tied at 51, the Lions reeled off eight straight points on a basket by Graylin Warner, the hero of the CYO game, and six free throws. The 61-55 defeat ended Brother Martin’s outstanding 34-6 season.
