Message from the President “If I have done any good in my life, it is because God used me as His instrument.” Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C. With humility typical of him, Brother Martin Hernandez summarized his life’s service with this simple yet profound statement. He would be so proud of his namesake school today and indeed pleased with the work of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and their lay partners in mission meeting the needs of a changing world. He would certainly witness the spirit and legacy of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in action every day. As we look forward to the 2021-2022 school year, we smile with the excitement of a “new start,” a new beginning of the ways we can all be “God’s instruments” to each other and to live our Gospel values. In doing so, we wholeheartedly trust in the charism of Father Andre Coindre, the humility of Brother Martin Hernandez, S.C., and the educational tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. The year 2021 brings a significant milestone for the worldwide institution of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart: it marks their bicentennial, 200 years since the first Brothers took their vows in Lyon, France, in 1821. Having celebrated our 50/150 anniversary at Brother Martin just two years ago, we know especially how proud we are for the important work we have been doing for a long, long

time and how this work has formed men and women of character, faith, and service, not only here in New Orleans, but also around the globe. Our school community will gather to celebrate Foundation Day with a special Liturgy on Thursday, September 30th, the very day those first Brothers of the Sacred Heart made vows to devote their lives to God 200 years ago. This event is a special teachable moment for our Crusaders--a witness to what a love of God and service to the world can do when we let ourselves be God’s instruments here on Earth. We plan to stream this event live via CSPN and hope you can join us virtually as Brother Martin commemorates the Bicentennial of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Thank you, as always, for your continued prayers and support for Brother Martin High School, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, and their lay partners in mission. Our next 100 years, here in New Orleans and worldwide, depend on such support and loyalty. Ametur Cor Jesu! Ametur Cor Mariae!

Greg Rando ‘77, President

Message from the Principal Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ, tells a story about Brother Martin Hernandez that, he says, typifies our school’s namesake: “One day, when Coach M.L. Lagarde was coaching basketball at St. Aloysius (before the consolidation of Aloysius and Cor Jesu), he got a phone call from Brother Martin. “ML,” barked Brother Martin into the phone, “I want you to find the dirtiest basketball in the gym and bring it to me here in my office.” When the ball was brought in, Brother Martin handed it to a salesman who was trying to sell the school a cleaning fluid and told him to get the ball clean. After scrubbing for 30 minutes, the salesman told Brother Martin he just could not clean the ball. It was too dirty. Brother Martin replied: “Well, your product does not do what you say it can, so I won’t buy it. Never say you can do something for sure unless you are certain.” On the evening of Senior Ring Mass last August, I shared Brother Neal’s story to challenge our students as they faced a year and a world of uncertainty throughout the school year and into the foreseeable future. I gave that address to the Class of 2021 in the Conlin Gym, the first time we had ever held the Ring Mass in our school’s gym. It would not be the last time we would find ourselves in unfamiliar territory as a school community. I challenged the Senior class to take Brother Martin Hernandez’s advice: “Never say you can do something for sure unless you are certain”. I challenged our young men to be certain! To act with courage and trust. To acknowledge the murkiness of their reality and to use that reality as an 2  Century II

opportunity to leave Brother Martin in better shape for the young men who would eventually follow them. I asked them to imagine what could be possible in their life if they made the decision to acknowledge their reality and then act with compassion, hope, courage, and trust. After 18 months of virtual learning, Zoom meetings and Schoology Conferences, face coverings, social distancing, physical distancing, quarantining, and self-isolation, our reality at Brother Martin High School is abundantly clear. It is one filled with opportunity and hope. Our entire school community, and especially our Senior Class of 2021, recognized the difficulty of their reality and rose to the challenges that lie in their path. The Senior Class molded itself in the likeness of Brother Martin Hernandez. Brother Martin High School is better today because of the conviction and efforts of our most recently graduated senior class. They leave Brother Martin prepared to make a living. Most importantly, they leave prepared to make a life. As you peruse this edition of the Century II, please celebrate the commitment and fortitude of the Brother Martin Class of 2021 as they join us as members of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association. Ametur Cor Jesu! Ametur Cor Mariae!

Finance Tips What about IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)? The CARES Act did not change the rules around the QCD, which allows individuals over 70½ years old to donate up to $100,000 in IRA assets directly to a charity annually, without taking the distribution into taxable income. However, remember that under the CARES Act, an individual can elect to deduct 100 percent of their AGI for cash charitable contributions. This effectively affords individuals over 59½ years old the benefits similar to a QCD; they can take a cash distribution from their IRA, contribute the cash to charity, and may completely offset tax attributable to the distribution by taking a charitable deduction in an amount up to 100 percent of their AGI for the tax year. If you’re planning a large donation in 2021, then this may be a smart strategy as long as you are between the ages of 59½ and 70½ and are not dependent on existing retirement funds.

Not itemizing? The CARES Act allowed for an additional, “above-the-line” deduction for charitable gifts made in cash of up to $300. This provision is extended into 2021 for taxpayers filing single/ separately. New in 2021 is an additional “above-the-line” deduction for those married filing jointly. Joint filers (who aren’t itemizing) will be allowed to take an above-the-line deduction of up to $600 in cash contributions to charity this year. Are you itemizing deductions? The adjusted gross income (AGI) limit for cash contributions to qualifying public charities remains increased for individual donors. For cash contributions made in 2021, you can elect to deduct up to 100 percent of your AGI (formerly 60 percent prior to the CARES Act).

“Little Kentucky” By Brother Neal Golden, S.C. ’57 CJ

An article that appeared in the January 7, 1951, Sunday supplement of the Times-Picayune referred to the St. Aloysius basketball program as “Little Kentucky.” The moniker was intended as a compliment since Kentucky under legendary Coach Adolph Rupp dominated the Southeastern Conference in basketball, winning 14 of the last 18 championships at that point. Under 30-year-old Johnny Altobello, who took over from Brother Ralph, S.C., as basketball coach in 1947, the Crusaders had won 54 of 56 prep games and 82 of 90 games overall, including two losses to the Loyola Wolfpups (freshman team).

The prep schedule called for Aloysius to play their toughest opponent, Jesuit, first. The Crusaders eked out a 42-36 victory at the Lyons Youth Center. Delpit led the scoring with 15.

1952 AA State Champions L-R Back row: Coach John Altobello, Roger Mmahat manager, Mike Conlin, Paul Centanni, Bob Skrokov, Anthony Imbraguglio, Jerry Cambre, John Murret, Joe Mahoney, Paul Zinser, Al Jacobs manager L-R Front row: James Casabat, Bobby Stechmann, Joe Trapani, Captain Bobby Delpit, Joe Murray, Merlin Bily, Roy Tujague

Johnny deflected praise. “That’s what happens when you get the players.” The author of the article wrote: “How did they [St. Aloysius] grow such a quick crop of titles? You’ll hear a lot of answers to that question. Is it because they have the opportunity to develop promising young lads in the seventh and eighth grades of their grammar school? Holy Cross has the same deal, and Redemptorist has a whole grammar school to play around with. “Is it because they offer more scholarships than other schools in the city? Even their rivals will grudgingly admit that this isn’t so. One Catholic school has made no bones about the fact it dished out 28 gratis tickets to athletes last year; another offered four kids from the same grammar school team a free ride. In contrast to these practices, look at the statement attributed to an important Aloysius school official by a local sportswriter: ‘We have athletics a St. Aloysius because we HAVE to have them.’ The answer to the Crusaders’ success in basketball may well be wrapped up in one word: Altobello. Though he will be the first to discount this, it is no mere coincidence that the school’s winning ways began with Altobello’s tenure of office.” The Crimson Knights had won the city championship all four years Altobello coached the team. Altobello’s 1949-50 squad had reached the state finals, losing to Baton Rouge High and future NBA Hall of Famer Bob Pettit. Three starters from the state finalists returned for their senior year in 1950-51: center Dick Brennan, guard Hal Cervini, and forward Arthur Franz. They were joined in the starting five by senior Crit Lorio and sophomore John “Boogie” Murret. The Crusaders were so good that they beat the Loyola Freshman Team in backto-back games 39-37 and 47-38. Aloysius defeated fellow Brothers of the Sacred Heart high schools by embarrassing margins: St. Stanislaus 60-30, Catholic High 62-21, and McGill 53-28. The big event of the pre-district season was the first annual CYO Tournament at Tulane Gym. The Saders beat Redemptorist 38-23 in the semifinals, then downed Jesuit 41-33 for the championship. Brennan and Delpit made the AllTournament team, and Delpit added the Archbishop Rummel Award as the Most Valuable Player.

The next four opponents were public schools who each lost by at least 19: Easton 54-29 in a game highlighted by Delpit’s 44’ basket with 10 seconds left in the first half, Nicholls 54-18 at Behrman Gym, S. J. Peters 54-15 as Brennan canned 25, and Fortier at Lyons Center 5031 for Altobello’s 100th win at St. Aloysius. The onslaught continued with romps over Redemptorist 5831 and Holy Cross 71-25 to complete the first round undefeated.

The second round was more of the same with the only stiff competition provided by Jesuit in the opener in their gym 41-37. Fortier’s only two prep losses were to Aloysius. The state tournament was held at the Louisiana Tech gym in Ruston with Aloysius “billed as the state’s top team.” “Displaying a smooth floor game … the Saints moved the ball around with perfection and executed their plays excellently,” according to Ted Castillo of the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate. The Crusaders waltzed past Lafayette 56-35 in the opening round. Brennan scored 11 and Delpit 10. Altobello used ten players, giving his starters some rest for the next day’s semifinal and final games. Catholic High provided the opposition in the 11:30 game. The Bears had ousted Fair Park of Shreveport 50-35 as husky Reuben Ruiz, the only senior on the squad, led the scoring with 13 points. CHS had improved since their 62-21 shellacking by the Crusaders in December but not enough to stop the Aloysius Express. With the score 15-11 Aloysius at the first quarter mark, the Saints took command with a 23-7 second period. A reserve lineup played most of the second half in the 5733 rout. Brennan was the only Crusader in double figures (13). In the final against Istrouma, Aloysius paced itself again in the first quarter, leading only 9-8. They widened the margin to five points in the second period before an Indian rally in the final minutes cut the lead to 23-22 at halftime. When would the Crusaders make one of their patented spurts? Midway through the third quarter, ahead only 27-25, the Saints scored six in a row on baskets by Brennan, Delpit, and Lorio. Istrouma responded with four straight points before Lorio, Murret, and Brennan answered with field goals to give Aloysius a 39-31 lead heading into the final period. The closest the Indians could get the rest of the way was five points. Final score: St. Aloysius 50 Istrouma 42. Brennan led all scorers with 20, and Murret tallied 13. The victory gave Aloysius its fourth state basketball championship in school history, with three of them coming during Altobello’s five-year reign as head coach. The victory got top billing on the front page of the Sunday sports section of The Times-Picayune New Orleans States the next day. Brennan and Lorio made first team all-state. “Little Kentucky” (continued from page 33) Only two starters returned for 1951-52, but they were good ones: Murret and Delpit. Many reserves who had seen extensive playing time the previous season when the Saints built big leads against so many foes would vie for the remaining three positions. Only four schools entered the CYO Tournament January 3-4. The Crusaders defended their title by defeating Holy Cross 53-34 in the semifinal and Jesuit 39-34 in the title game. The final was tied at 29 after three periods, but Delpit and Anthony Imbraguglio put the Saints in front for good. Both made the All-Tournament, and Delpit won the MVP award for the second straight year. In the last game before league play, the Saints hosted the “Towering Indians” from Istrouma. After leading by only one at the half, Altobello’s gang blitzed the visitors in the second half to win 56-38. It would turn out to be one of only two defeats Istrouma suffered in the regular season. The Crusaders’ winning streak reached 36 games with romps over Nicholls 54-25 and Warren Easton 52-32. But Fortier, with four starters returning from their 1951 semifinal team, edged the Saints 35-31 at Tulane. Three nights later against Jesuit at Behrman Gym, the Saders started as if they were still stunned by the loss, falling behind by 10 at the half. They fought back and eked out a 30-26 triumph. The Saints roared to a 17-2 first quarter advantage against Redemptorist at Kingsley House and coasted to a 61-30 victory. Then they returned to their slowstart ways against Holy Cross at home. They trailed 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-27 at the half. But they rallied to lead 43-38 at the end of the third period on their way to a 59-48 victory. The Crusaders found their stride in the second round to finish atop the prep league for the sixth straight year. After dispatching Nicholls 57-41 and Easton 53-26, the Saints faced Fortier, their first round conqueror, before 4,000 fans at Tulane. The Tarpons started strong, hitting 50% of their shots to lead 22-12 at the half. Whatever defensive adjustments Altobello made at the break worked because Fortier failed to score a field goal the second half and overtime, in part because the Tarpons tried to hold the ball and sit on their lead. However, the Crusaders couldn’t generate much offense themselves. The game was deadlocked at 27 when Paul Zinser followed up Delpit’s missed shot for the only points in overtime to win 29-27. The rest of the round was a cakewalk: Jesuit 42-20, Redemptorist 70-41, and Holy Cross 55-40. Those wins moved the Crusaders’ record entering the state tournament to 18-1. Boogie Murret (“the ball-handler”) and Bobby Delpit (‘the hurry-up clutch guy”) made the Item All-Prep team. Merlin Bily made second team. The eight-team state AA tournament was held at Northwestern State in Natchitoches. Castillo described Aloysius as “a typical Johnny Altobello team which lacks nothing but height.” The Saints led Lake Charles 29-22 at halftime,

Action at Tulane Gym between Aloysius (in white) and Fortier 40-30 after three quarters, and Action against Jesuit in the CYO Tournament 56-32 at the final horn. Altobello at Tulane Gym had his third stringers on the court in the last minutes. Delpit stayed in long enough to score 17 points, tops for Aloysius by five. The Crusaders changed their pattern in the semifinal against Bogalusa. They started like a house afire, leading 17-3 at the first break. They coasted to a 44-30 victory as Altobello again rested his starters for the finals that night. N. Charles Wicker of the Times-Picayune wrote that, “It took one of the greatest comebacks ever seen in a class double A tournament for the Crusaders to beat the Bolton Bears of Alexandria, 52-50.” Behind 32-18 at the half after scoring the last four points before the break, Aloysius started pressing the Bruins to cut the lead to 39-37 at the end of the third quarter. Zinser knotted the count early in the final period, and it was nip and tuck from there. Paul hit a basket to put the Crusaders on top 52-50 with two minutes to play. When the Crusaders got the ball back, Delpit put on a one-man freeze until time ran out. Bobby led the Aloysius scoring with 17 followed by Imbraguglio’s 12 and Zinser’s 11. Murret and Delpit made the All-State team. The Crusaders’ record in Altobello’s six years as coach was an incredible 132-7 against high school teams, including 79-3 in prep games. Johnny finished an outstanding year by coaching the Aloysius baseball team to the AA state championship. March 29, 1952, became a fateful date in the history of St. Aloysius. That was the day on which Johnny Altobello dropped a bombshell on Crescent City prep sports. He announced that he was leaving Aloysius at the end of the school year to take charge of the athletic program at De La Salle High School. The school on St. Charles Avenue would complete its growth, one grade level per year, to a four-year high school for 1952-53.

The first use of the phrase “ ’Round the Bend” in our publications dates back to 1951 in The Aloysian, the St. Aloysius student newspaper. “ ’Round the Bend” was a common colloquialism in the New Orleans area describing future events in the city. In 1969, The Martin Crusader, Brother Martin’s student newspaper, adopted the phrase in its inaugural publication. Then in 1990, to honor our student publications, the Century II changed their upcoming events list to “’Round the Bend.”
