2017-2018 New Faculty This summer, the newest members of the Brother Martin Faculty gathered together for the 2017 New Faculty Orientation. Members of the administration, along with the staff development team attended. Staff Development Co-Chair Ian Supak and Staff Development Co-Chair Melanie Williams began with an overview of the day. Then, Technology Coordinator Craig Zeller ’02 and Library Director Keiren Aucoin led the group in a session designed to familiarize them with the technology basics of the school.

Joe Caruso ’79 Named Alumnus of the Year Joseph J. Caruso, Jr. ’79 has been selected to receive the 2018 Allen J. Ellender Award as Alumnus of the Year. Joe and his wife Erin have been active members of not only the Brother Martin community but the Greater New Orleans Catholic education community.

Joe is a member of the Brother Martin High School Board of Directors. He is a former member of the St. Aloysius Century Foundation established to support Brother Martin High School. He serves on the Brother Martin Phase III Capital Campaign as Co-chair, the Prayer Breakfast Committee as Chairman, the President’s Dinner Committee and previously served on the Phase II Capital Campaign, Alumni Giving and the Class of 1979 reunion committees.

Joe serves as Executive Vice President – Chief Audit Executive at IBERIABANK Corporation in New Orleans. He is a member of the Senior Leadership team of this $28 billion regional bank holding company and is responsible for providing advice and counsel on risk management and internal controls to the Board of Directors’ Audit Committee, Senior Management and various bank committees.

He reports functionally to the Board of Directors’ Audit Committee and is responsible for a team of

Accounting at the University of Holy Cross in New Orleans.

Joe is a Louisiana Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fiduciary and Investment Risk Specialist.

He is affiliated with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Fiduciary and Investment Risk Management Association and the Institute of Internal Auditors - New Orleans Chapter.

Joe is the proud recipient of the 2016 Cor Et Mentem Award, the University of Holy Cross honor for service to the university and community, the 2011 Servus Fidelis Award, the Willwoods Community honor for dedication and service to the entity’s ministries, the 2001 Charles Keller Memorial Award, United Way’s highest honor for distinguished volunteer service and commitment to the Community and was named the 1998 Alumnus of the Year for the University of Holy Cross College.

Brother Martin Night with Baby Cakes In early May, members of the Brother Martin community attended Brother Martin Night with the New Orleans Baby Cakes at the “Shrine on Airline” sponsored by Pepsi Beverages Company. Students and guests were in for a special surprise as Dr. Stephen Tucker, Ph.D. threw out the first pitch before the start of the second game. The Alumni & Development Office hosted a small gathering in the Pepsi Suite where faculty and staff enjoyed watching the game.

Fidelity Through Change As we meet the needs of a changing world, our tradition of building continues. We are currently in process of relocating our Library to expanded space on the second floor. The Library has a new location but it will continue to be the heart of the school.

Our new space is transformative, welcoming and designed for student learning. Featuring plenty of natural light and a view of the back yard, the future-ready environment allows students to work collaboratively in dynamic space that is accessible to all and ready to support whole classes, small groups and single users. All furnishings are mobile and the area is equipped not only for current technological advances but it is designed to meet future innovations. It is essential for college and life preparation that students interact with a collection of the highest quality resources in all formats: reference and nonfiction books, databases, internet-based resources and e-books, which are all available to our students. Today, it is critical that students are taught proper research strategies, recognize bias and receive training in the use of all research formats. Our teachers are provided with a professional collection and an area to work with librarians to plan and execute lessons.

Quiet areas of the new space provide sanctuary for our students, a space to reflect and enjoy personal reading. The Library’s instructional program continues to provide specific research components at every grade level and supports our college-prep curriculum.

Our Formation Center has been relocated. The Formation Center is designated for tutoring and assistance to students who need academic help before school, during their unstructured periods and/or after school. Students come to the lab voluntarily or as required by teachers. Teachers and honor students are available to provide any necessary help.

Campus News Summer

Extr acurriculars Cheerleaders

Campers enjoyed morning sports activities of baseball, basketball, flag football, wrestling and intramurals. Campers had the opportunity to participate in art classes. Afternoon activities for campers included swimming at the UNO pool, along with field trips to Sector 6, Colonial Bowling Lanes and a New Orleans Baby Cakes baseball game.

Baseball Camp

Over the summer, campers, ranging from 6 -14 years old, grabbed their baseball gear and were ready to return to E.A. Farley Field along with members of the varsity baseball coaching staff and players. This summer, campers were able to attend either one of the two weeks of camp offered all under the direction of new head baseball coach Jeff Lupo ’92.

Basketball Camp

Campers returned to Brother Martin’s campus for the 2017 Brother Martin Basketball Camp. Head basketball coach Chris Biehl directed the camp.

The 2017-2018 Brother Martin cheerleading team participated in a three- day Universal Cheerleader Association Master’s Camp at the University of Mississippi. The team won the coveted “Leadership Award “, which was chosen by the other teams at camp. They were also honored with the “Most Collegiate” award which was chosen by the UCA Staff.

Chorus Ten Chorus members were selected to the Louisiana Music Educators Association District Honor Chorus. These students will participate in a weekend of rehearsals in January and will present a final concert under the direction of Dr. Leonard Raybon from Tulane University.

Lacrosse The Rogue Lacrosse summer teams, led by students of Brother Martin, completed a summer by competing in the 2017 Big Easy Lacrosse Classic and Georgia Southern Shootout.

Educating Young Men for Life 4  Century II

Band The Crusader Band joined the Dominican Debs at Joe Yenni Stadium for their annual performance at the LMEA District VI Marching Band Assessment in late October. The Band and Debs received Sweepstakes Superior Ratings! Ratings from categories such as General Effect, Musical Precision, Marching Execution and Auxiliary Coordination are considered by a panel of judges.

Faculty Tom Leggett, English Department Chair, has been selected as a finalist in the 2017 Press Club of New Orleans Excellence in Journalism Awards for his sports feature about disc golf.

Deborah Broussard has been selected for the Stanford University’s Outstanding Educator Award. Each year, Stanford invites a first-year student to nominate an educator who has influenced them both inside and outside of the classroom. Broussard was nominated by Les Levy ’17. Broussard was the 2012 recipient of the Brother More Schaefer Award and has been a member of the Crusader faculty for almost twenty years. Currently, she is the Assistant Principal for Academics. She has taught math and science and served as Director of Staff Development, moderator of Key Club and Student Ambassadors.

Athletics Baseball Mark Wisniewski ’81 led the team to a record of 19-15-1 which included an appearance in the Division I state quarterfinals. This season the baseball team will be under the direction of new head Coach Jeff Lupo ’92, as Coach Wisniewski has begun his new role as Athletic Director.

Joel Bergeron ’17 was named as honorable mention for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association all-state baseball team.

Bowling Head Coach Bruce Himbert ’78 led the Crusaders to a record of 15-1. The team took a district title win and advanced to the State Semifinals.

Individually, Cody Schaffer ’19 set a bowling state record with a 226 regular-season average, including his first sanctioned 300 game during a win in the bi-regional round of the playoffs.

Golf The Crusaders returned to the state championship for the first time since the 2006-2007 season. They shot two of their lowest rounds over the past five years and finished seventh at state, their highest finish since 2004. Coach Ron Brisbi ’67 SA fielded a talented team and looks forward to next season.

Swimming Shawn Brown ’17 will continue his swimming career at Henderson State University. A signing ceremony took place in the Terrace where Coach Mark Bordelon introduced the threeyear letterman and spoke about Shawn’s accomplishments as a student-athlete.

Track Track and Field head coach Brad Duplechain led a team that saw two school records fall during the indoor season, an indoor state individual champion in the 3200-meter run and a school record broken during the outdoor season. At the LSU Indoor Classic, Hunter Appleton ’19 set a new indoor 1600-meter school record by posting a time of 4:30.34. The 4 x 800-meter relay team consisting of Reid Kern ’17, Ethan Meydrich ’18, Hunter Appleton ’19 and Hayden Courregé ’18 broke the school record twice during the indoor season.

Hunter Appleton ’19, 3200-meters, Hayden Courregé ’18, 1600-meteres, and Justin Runnels ’17, shot put, were named to the 2017 Louisiana Sports Writers Association all-state track & field team.

Wrestling Steven Shields ’17 has been named the winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award for Louisiana, presented

by The National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

New Orleans Hispanic Foundation Scholars

Students Grant Touchette ’19 wrote the best example of an argumentative essay for the Sophomore Writing Project in which all sophomores participated. Grant is an honors student and was presented with this award

by Greg Rando ’77 and Jay Lonero ’83 at the 2017 Leadership Ceremony.

Ryan Simoneaux ’18 was named Chevron’s High School Scholar Athlete of the Week in October. This award recognizes outstanding seniors from the GNO area. He is a soccer letterman, member of Mu Alpha Theta, Excalibur Honor Society, National Honor Society and the Science Olympiad team. He also devotes his time as a volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank and Christian Brothers summer camp.

In April, five Crusaders were recognized as recipients of the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation (NOHHF) Scholars Ceremony. Each year the Foundation awards scholarships to talented Hispanic students at local schools participating in the NOHHF High School Scholarship Program.

National Merit

8th Grade Trip

123 Crusaders enjoyed the annual 8th grade trip.

Dallas, TX was the first stop where they visited the JFK Museum in Dealey Plaza, played some rounds of Topgolf, visited both AT&T Stadium and Six Flags, and ended their time in Dallas, watching the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park. The Crusaders visited The Alamo, SeaWorld, Schlitterbahn Water Park and the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Seven Brother Martin students have been honored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their high scores on the October 2016 PSAT exam. Joseph Aguda ’18 and Jackson Vicknair ’18 received top honors and were named National Merit Semifinalists. Five others were commended for their performance: Jeremy Baier ’18, John Buchert ’18, Aaron Daniels ’18, Peter Davis ’18 and John Heraty ’18.

Crusader Discovery Night

College-Credit Courses with LSU

Dr. Aaron Sheehan-Dean, the Fred C. Frey Chair of Southern Studies and history professor at Louisiana State University, visited with our junior Honors and Advanced Placement U.S. History classes as part of our participation in LSU’s dual enrollment program.

Through LSU’s College Readiness program, our students are able to enroll and earn college credit. Currently, Brother Martin High School is the only school in the New Orleans area to offer dual enrollment history classes through LSU. Sheehan-Dean works closely with history teacher Christopher Vicknair to offer a college-level history course on our Elysian Fields campus.

Brother Martin held its Mothers’ Social in midSeptember, an afternoon to treat Crusader moms to refreshments and give them an opportunity to socialize with other parents. Organized by Paula McCaskell and Carla Gittleson, the afternoon social provided information about everything the school has to offer parents, including opportunities to volunteer.

Ring Mass The Class of 2018 received their senior rings in late August at St. Joseph. Fr. Paul Hart ’70, who officiated, reminded seniors that they are part of something larger than themselves. Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 reminded the young men that they are part of a larger family of faith. He challenged the seniors to become servant leaders. “Servant leadership is vital to who we are as a Brother Martin community.

About 200 Crusader prospects arrived on campus in early September for a chance to experience Brother Martin High School’s campus and get to know its students and faculty. Crusader Discovery Night allows 5th – 8th-grade students to experience the Crusader spirit through games, food, presentations and a pep rally. Student Ambassadors and Student Recruiters assisted with games, activities and dinner, before hearing from Student Council President Colby Coulon ’18 and Director of Admissions Carlos Bogran III ’99.

Our Lady of Fatima Veneration The Brother Martin community and guests attended a veneration of our Lady of Fatima in the Branton Chapel in late September.

College Run The Brother Martin College Run was back on the road again this year! On the trip were 29 rising juniors and seniors who joined Brad Duplechain, Matt Lambert ’98 and Chris Vicknair as they visited various public, private and Catholic colleges and universities across the United States.

Hayden Courregé ’18 stated that “the college run gives students the opportunity to tour colleges throughout different parts of the country and learn about the admissions process through interactive information sessions and student led tours. The trip does not only comprise of college touring, but fun events like a Cubs game and white water rafting.” Their adventure began by taking a stroll along Beale St., which is the heart of Memphis music, and then by visiting some historical sites such as the Lorraine Motel, which is the site of Martin Luther King’s assassination. Their first college visit was Ole Miss where they made time to take a photo for their Admissions Department. The group then visited Rhodes College in Memphis and took their trip to new heights as they toured the top of the Arch of St. Louis. At St. Louis University, 6  Century II

students were greeted by fellow Crusader Alumnus Brad Giacone ’14 who led them on a tour of the university. There was no rest for these Crusaders as they embarked on more fun at Six Flags followed by a meal at Pappy’s BBQ. Having a little downtime, the Crusaders headed to Chicago. In the ‘Windy City, Crusaders stopped for some Chicago-style pizza at Giordano’s Pizza before heading over to Navy Pier to take a boat tour of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. They even had time to watch a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. However, it was back to business as the Crusaders headed to the University of Chicago where they experienced a student led tour hosted by Crusader Alumnus Mason Williams ’15.

Then, the students spent time on the campus of Northwestern University. Joseph Bordelon ’18 commented that “the College Run really helped me broaden my horizons for the future and it showed me that there was more than just staying in state for college. It was also a great bonding experience as I got to meet new people who I wouldn’t have ever had the opportunity to talk with.” The remainder of the trip was spent at University of Notre Dame, University of Kentucky, Vanderbilt University and University of Alabama.

Festivities kicked off with a pep rally in the Conlin Gym before school. Students enjoyed lunch in the backyard at school as Brother Martin Food Services, faculty and staff served a variety of tailgate foods.

The celebration continued after classes at Tad Gormley Stadium with a Tailgate Party featuring jambalaya from Pete Algero ’80 and Reinhart FoodService L.L.C. and Pepsi products. The Student Ambassadors, under the direction of Debbie Broussard and Alex Becnel ’08 served alumni and guests. Stephen Lewis ’03 served as emcee, Pat Barbaro ’85 deejayed and the cheerleaders, NJROTC Rifle Team, the Drumline and Crusader Band all performed. The 2017 Homecoming Court was introduced with student escorts before heading in for the game. Before kick-off, Football and Cross-Country championship teams were recognized on their championship anniversaries. At halftime, Miss Calley Blue, daughter of Johnny Blue ’86 and niece of Kleo Blue ’89, was named

2017 Homecoming Queen and Alumni Board President Sal Brocato ’88 presented the crown.

NJROTC and cheerleader alumni participated in the celebration. William Madary ’68 CJ and Gerald Buchert ’68 SA served as honorary captains for their 50-year anniversary. After the Crusader victory, alumni and friends celebrated at the Lettermen Party at Lakeview Harbor.

Plus 50 Reunion

Fr. Paul Hart ’70 The Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association celebrated their Plus 50 Reunion over Homecoming weekend. Plus 50 alumni and their guests were invited to the Homecoming tailgate party outside of Tad Gormley Stadium on Friday night. Inside the stadium, pre-game introductions and recognitions were announced recognizing athletic lettermen and championship teams. Alumni filled the stadium and cheered the Crusaders to victory over the Holy Cross Tigers, 26-22.

On Saturday night, continuing with the festivities, the Plus 50 Mass and Reunion took place at Brother Martin High School. The evening began with Mass in the James B. Branton Chapel celebrated by

school chaplain, Fr. Paul Hart ’70.

Fr. Paul welcomed alumni and their guests to campus while thanking them for their dedication to our rich tradition that still continues today.

“The Plus 50 Reunion is a great event to be with my classmates and friends from Cor Jesu and St. Aloysius. It is also a great Brothers of the Sacred Heart tradition,” said Armand Bertin ’59 CJ. Director of Alumni Scott Corrente, Sr. ’83 recognized special guests, President John Devlin, Brother Neri J. Tom Nenos ’64 SA commented, “This is a great annual event because it unites graduates from both Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools, St. Aloysius and Cor Jesu, working together on the Plus 50 Reunion.” Following a reception and dinner served in the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall, alumni reminisced with one another.

St. Aloysius 1952 Football Champions’ Reunion Members of the St. Aloysius 1952 City and Southeast Louisiana Football Championship team reunited at Ralph’s on the Park in early August. The 1952 team won the first football championship in school history. Teammates and their guests shared stories while enjoying dinner and drinks. Brother Martin Golf Classic The 35th annual Brother Martin Golf Classic attracted over 200 players to Lakewood Golf Club on Friday, April 21. Players enjoyed beautiful weather, delicious food and cold beverages in the morning and afternoon rounds. Food on the course included charbroiled oysters, Swamp Burgers, po-boys from Bear’s and sandwiches from Pigeon Caterers. The Class of ’74 Cooking Team, Blue Runner Beans, G’s Pizza and jambalaya from Brad Treuting ’04 were featured at lunch.

Johnny’s Seafood boiled crawfish and the Culinary Crusaders prepared and served a pasta dish for the reception after golf. Super Auction gift items included hotel stays at Windsor Court, Omni Royal Orleans and Marriott Convention Center.

Legacy Night Brother Martin welcomed just over 100 alumni and their families back to campus for its 4th Annual Legacy Family Night in mid-October. This annual event is sponsored by both the Admissions and Alumni Offices.

Tennis Tournament The 2017 Brother Martin Tennis Tournament attracted over 120 players to the UNO Tennis Center on Thursday, May 18th. Fishing Rodeo Threatening weather could not deny a successful 2017 Brother Martin Fishing Rodeo. Over 40 teams entered and competed for awards in 15 categories including new additions Bass, Snapper, Largest Fish (Not a Gar), Father/Daughter Biggest Fish and Biggest Gar. The Class of ’73 Culinary Squad provided delicious food, sno-balls and other treats. CCA Louisiana provided rods and reels for young fishermen. Kids competed in a fish toss then teamed up with parents in a balloon

tossing contest. Team McCrossen set a tournament record in the Largest 2 Redfish 27” and Under category weighing in at 17.35 lbs. For the second consecutive year, Anthony Congemi ’19 won the Largest Fish Caught By a Current Brother Martin Student category. Rob Hymel kept the crowd entertained with music and Eddie Gonzales ’77 served as emcee. The “Big Board Raffle” and Parade of Prizes featured hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates and other fascinating items.

Flag Football Tournament Members of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Association and guests participated in the annual Alumni Flag Football Tournament in early September. This was the fourth year for the tournament. Director of Alumni Scott Corrente ’83, Jimmy Gatti and David Pecot ’76 coordinated this year’s event with Steve Lahare ’74 serving as the head official with fellow alumni and non- alumni officials. “Pure Bred” took home the coveted title after defeating “Tight End Reinstated.”

Crusader Cook-off The Cook-Off stimulated the appetites of the hundreds of people gathered together in the school’s Backyard, by sending out aromas of culinary delights like Bang Bang Shrimp, ‘Sader Sliders and Sashimi Bites, just to name a few.

Fifteen cooking teams competed for awards while ten homebrew teams competed While alumni and guests were busy tasting the various cuisines and quaffing homebrews from cooking teams, local and celebrity guest judges were voting for the “Top Chef” winners of the event. The Brew Crew wowed guests and judges with their Bang Bang Shrimp and took home both the “People’s Choice” and “Top Chef” awards.

Receiving Gold Medals were the Spice Boys with their shrimp sliders and The Swine Spectators with their skirt steak sliders. The “Master Brew” award was given to Chicken & the Kegg with their Hen House Wheat. Runners- up were Redfish Brewing with a Pinot Blonde and Laughing Bayou with a Doppelganger Pale Ale. The Smokin’ to the Oldies team won the “People’s Choice” with a Mango Belgian Triple.

Trivia Night V In mid-August, Brother Martin Trivia Night V tested the knowledge of members of the Brother Martin community. Miguel Sanchez ’00, James Maumus ’89 and Jeff Maumus ’97 of Challenge Entertainment and Live Trivia hosted the event.

Thirteen teams answered a variety of trivia questions about music, celebrities, history, sports and more. The evening included a bonus round of Brother Martin trivia questions. “Tom Benson’s Got a Six Pack” were crowned champions with “Here for the Crispitos” (Jimmy Ruckert ’03, Brett

Mathes ’00, James Ferraro ’01, Taylor Gilbert ’03, George Hoof and Tony Stauder ’12) finishing as runners-up. “Tantric Pumping” (Michael Collins ’88, Craig Gremillion ’88, Vic Landry ’86, Bill Winchester ’88 and Kraig de Lanzac ’86) won the Brother Martin bonus portion and a lucky winner took home cash from the 50/50. Kraig de Lanzac ’86 commented “Trivia Night has become one of my favorite Brother Martin events. It’s a casual night in the Benson Mall with food, drink and a fun, spirited trivia competition with friends.

Whether you finish as the first-place team or if you are “just there for the crispitos”, Trivia Night is a great time.”

Lettermen and Cheerleaders assisted Last May, Brother Martin hosted their annual Crusaders’ Miracle Weekend to benefit the Miracle League of GNO. Guests of Brother Martin and the Miracle League ‘hit it out the ballpark’ with a fun-

filled day of activities for participants.

The event also included a baseball clinic for players from the Miracle League and a split squad game on E.A. Farley Field featuring Brother Martin’s cheerleaders, students, athletic teams and all-stars from the Miracle League.

These games were designed to give disabled youth an opportunity to compete alongside high school players and learn different aspects of the game. This year’s event also featured several auction items and games of chance with all proceeds going to support this great cause.

Marisa and Tim Taylor ’97 hosted the annual Houston Chapter Crawfish Boil in late June.

Tim, Marisa and Tim’s parents, Rose Ann and Tim Taylor ’72, prepared the crawfish, hamburgers, hot dogs and side items. Greg Clement ’92 provided jambalaya and Mike Ligon ’88 and his family pitched in with the service. Kenny Spellman ’84 updated the attendees on school activities and Phase III of the Capital Campaign.

While in Charlotte for the Alumni Saints Trip, school peronnel met with our alumni living in North Carolina.

Alumni, faculty and staff collaborated to ensure a memorable final day for the Class of 2017 in late April. The day began with breakfast in the Terrace prepared and served by Brother Martin Food Services. Fr. Paul Hart ’70 celebrated Mass in the Branton Chapel followed by a keynote address from Eddie Robinson ’88. Seniors then attended small group presentations given by alumni whom thanked them and gave advice as they move forward in life. After the “Class of ’17 Tailgate Party” in the backyard, seniors gathered in the Conlin Gym where “The Spirit” made a surprise appearance. The day concluded with a steak dinner and dessert in the Benson Mall prepared by Wayne Lee, Mike Lemoine ’02, chef Raymond Yakelis ’06 of Sysco Foods and Johnny Smith of Eiserloh Company and Brother Martin Food Parker Velargo ’00, Fr. Alumni Highlight Richard Baudry ’86, founder of Baudry Therapy Center, recently visited the White House as part of a group of small business owners invited to meet the President and his staff while the President signed a heath care order designed to assist small businesses. Rich’s group represented LABI and Louisiana small businesses.

Scott Wolfe, Jr. ’98 has been recognized as one of Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans’ “Rising Stars”. Scott, attorney and CEO of zlien, has simplified payment for construction payments with his company. Scott has also been recognized as one of New Orleans City Business’ “innovators of the year” and part of their “Leadership in Law Hall of Fame”. He has been on the Silicon Bayou 100 list every year since 2014, is a winner of The Idea Village & Jim Coulter’s IDEAPitch, and is the ACG’s reigning Emerging Growth Company. Scott is a graduate of Southern Methodist University (B.A.), and Loyola University New Orleans College of Law (J.D.).

Bert Lodrig, Jr. continues his community service in the greater New Orleans area. Bert has worked with the elderly, disabled and underprivileged in a variety of ways. Bert is a strong advocate for individual’s rights and proper public policy and participates in many political forums.

Reverend Paul Hart has been appointed by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond ’67 CJ as Chaplain at Brother Martin beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. Fr. Paul currently serves as Director of Retreats at St. Joseph Abbey, work that he will continue in addition to his ministry at Brother Martin.

Dr. Hector Maldonado, an orthodontist in private practice in Metairie and Lutcher, who is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the LSU School of Dentistry, presented a D.D.S. diploma to his son, Dr. Kyle Maldonado ’08 at the LSU Health Science Center commencement ceremony in May. Kyle is currently an Orthodontic resident at the LSU School of Dentistry and will eventually enter private practice with his father.

Brett Casey, M.D. received his MBA from Yale University in May 2017. Brett has been a member of the Houma Orthopedic Clinic since 2004. In 1994, he completed his undergraduate education at Louisiana State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology. He obtained his medical degree in 1999 from Louisiana State University Medical Center. Dr. Casey’s orthopedic residency was completed through Texas A&M University Health Sciences Center, with rotations through Scott and White Memorial Hospital, Olin E. Teague Veterans Center and the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.

The film chronicled former Saints star Steve Gleason’s road from ALS diagnosis to the premiere of his feature-length film at the Sundance Film Festival.

Brett attended Tulane on scholarship until Hurricane Katrina closed the school.

He relocated to Portland, Oregon where he attended Portland State where he graduated in 2009 and continued his studies at Purdue, first earning his Masters and later a Ph.D. in I/O Psychology upon graduation in December 2016.

Brett was then hired in April by PepsiCo in White Plains, NY as a Senior Analyst.

Kevin Branley, a graduate of Louisiana State University with a BS in Accounting and a Master of Accountancy and an employee at Deloitte & Touche, LLP in New Orleans, was one of the recipients of The 2016 Elijah Watt Sells Award. The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) bestows the award upon CPA candidates who have obtained a cumulative average score above 95.50 across all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, passed all four sections of the Examination on their first attempt and completed testing in 2016. A total of 102,323 individuals sat for the Examination in 2016, with 58 candidates meeting the criteria to receive the Elijah Watt Sells Award.

Jonathan Ebersole, junior at VCU and pitcher for the New Orleans Boosters, helped lead his team to the championship of the 73rd AAABA Tournament. The title was the 15th in the history of the New Orleans franchise.

Jalen Gray, Loyola University (NO) basketball letterman, has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2016-17 Honors Court. Majoring in business, Jalen graduated in May after earning SSAC All-Academic Team honors in each of the last three seasons. In order to be named to the Honors Court a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year and be a varsity member of a team at the NCAA Division I, II, or III, or NAIA Division I or II level with an NABC member coach.

Alumni Meet A casual conversation at the NOPSI hotel turned into an alumni event.

Recently, co-workers Tu Nguyen BM ‘95 and Dave Glaviano ’73 were having lunch at the Public Service Restaurant. A gentleman sitting with his wife at the next table overheard the mention of Brother Martin and proclaimed that he was a 1955 St. Aloysius graduate. Another table of guests joined the conversation as one of the ladies said her father graduated from St. Aloysius in 1942 and then went straight to WW ll and was a prisoner of war for two years. Another lady at that table said her sons all attended were alumni of Brother Martin. Many stories were exchanged as the alumni reminisced about their days at St. Aloysius and Brother Martin.

Pierce Ippolito graduated from US military academy at West Point and is now a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army.

2014

Greg Deichmann, LSU right-fielder, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with the 43rd pick in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Greg was voted a first-team All-American for 2017 as he led the LSU baseball team in home runs with 19, slugging percentage at .606, RBI with 72 and walks with 48 and he is hit .320 heading into the College World Series.

Logan Mancuso, Millsaps College basketball letterman, has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2016-17 Honors Court. Logan is majoring in business administration. Thomas Peters, a sophomore at USM, earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors during the 2016-17 track & field seasons. To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and met competition requirements.

2017

Patrick Newburger was recently featured in the July edition of St. Charles Avenue Magazine. He was interviewed for their monthly student activist article. While at Brother Martin Patrick was a member of Student Council, Crusaders for Life, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and NHS. In the spring, he was awarded the St. Timothy Award from the Archdiocese of New Orleans and a Golden Crusader award at the 2017 Brother Martin Leadership Ceremony.

Remembering R ay Fricken ’55 SA

Imagine a man with a Ph.D. in Elementary Particle Physics coaching 11- and 12-year olds in football and baseball for 15 years – and not considering it beneath his dignity but instead enjoying every minute of it.

Imagine a man who worked at the Atomic Energy Commission at the highest level of scientific research sitting with an 8th- or 9th-grade boy tutoring him in Algebra I. And asking for no compensation except the joy of helping a student learn.

But of course, we don’t have to imagine such a man, for we have had the privilege of knowing Ray Fricken.

After graduating from St. Aloysius in 1955, Ray earned a B.S. at Loyola before going to LSU, where he earned a Ph.D. in Elementary Particle Physics thanks in part to a National Science Foundation (NSF) Fellowship.

He joined a research group at LSU that was part of a national consortium of eight universities with headquarters at the University of Chicago, where Enrico Fermi built the first atomic pile in 1942, pioneering work that led to the first atomic bomb three years later.

With a military obligation he still had to fulfill because of his ROTC commitment at Loyola, Ray attended officers training for eight weeks before being assigned to work at the Research Division of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in Maryland. He would spend 30 years at the AEC and its successor, the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA).

Ray participated in some of the most important scientific research of the 20th century.

One of his first assignments put him on the site selection committee for the National Accelerator Laboratory (now known as Fermilab), which was built in Batavia IL. Two major components of the Standard Model of Fundamental Particles and Forces have been discovered at Fermilab: the bottom quark (1977) and the top quark (1995). In 2000, Fermilab experimenters announced the first direct observation of the tau neutrino, the last fundamental particle to be observed. Another project he worked on was an addition to the linear accelerator at Stanford University.

The biggest project, and the one that gave him the most pride, was the construction of a Superconducting Super Collider in Texas. If completed, the collider would have been the largest and most energetic in the world. However, Congress, looking to trim the Federal budget, cancelled the project in 1993 after $2.5 billion had been spent. Burnt out from years of fighting the political appointees who oversaw scientific research projects, Ray retired after that setback. Originally, scientists ran AEC. But that changed with ERDA. “Political appointments drifted lower in the organization,” he explained. “I didn’t like it.

I had several opportunities to move into senior executive positions, but I didn’t

want to deal with the politics.”

He always intended to move back home to New Orleans someday, but his mother’s stroke accelerated his plans.

Enjoying a handsome retirement income from the Federal government and not one to tolerate idleness, Ray wanted to stay active. “I was looking for something productive,” he explained, “but I wasn’t interested in full-time employment.”

Ray had worked with youth for 15 years in Maryland when he coached 11-12-year olds in football and baseball. Recalling his education by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at St. Aloysius, Ray volunteered in the Instructional Lab at Brother Martin in the fall of ’93. It didn’t take long for the faculty to utilize his talents in many other ways as well.

Let’s use our imaginations again. Imagine an award-winning physics teacher of long standing who poured his heart and mind into his classes and shepherded his students like a hen does her chicks. Now imagine that teacher asking someone else to help him develop an Advanced Placement Physics course.

Again, we don’t have to imagine such a teacher because we knew Brother Maurus. It’s perhaps the highest tribute I can pay to Ray that Maurus respected him so much that he even let his Aloysius ’55 classmate take over the class for certain topics.

Ray also assisted Nancy Autin and Barbara Stott in teaching Advanced Placement Calculus. After Maurus’s retirement, Ray worked with Mary Picou on Physics AP. “I’ve been able to do what I enjoy,” he said, “teaching physics and math without being burdened with all the nuisances that go along with being a teacher.”

Ray not only enriched the education of Brother Martin students for 23 years, he also made significant financial donations to the school. The Brother Martin Board of Directors recognized his role in making the school better by awarding him the Founders Medal in 2001.

Now imagine another Ph.D. on the faculty who crossed paths too infrequently with Ray over the years. Imagine what the two Ph.D.’s talked about when they had the chance. Teaching mathematics or science a new way? Using computers to enhance instruction? No, they talked about the baseball pennant races or the current sport of their alma mater, LSU. Ray analyzed the LSU offense with as much skill as he analyzed the interaction of atomic particles at Fermi Lab. Ray greeted everyone with a smile even when declining health slowed him down. He was unfailingly gracious and even-tempered. Even faculty members who did not know him that well have commented on his kindness. Oh, he might at times have expressed frustration with students who didn’t make the effort to succeed. Who hasn’t? But I never saw him angry - except maybe at Les Miles for his clock mismanagement.

“No man stands so tall as when he stoops to held a child.” Those words of Danny Thomas certainly applied to Ray. It takes great patience to tutor students. It also takes great love, and Ray possessed those two virtues in abundance.

We cannot replace Ray Fricken. But we can try, each in our own way, to express our love for students the way he expressed his.
