Joe Caruso ’79 Named Alumnus of the Year Joseph J. Caruso, Jr. ’79 received the Senator Allen J. Ellender Alumnus of the Year Award. John Devlin, President of Brother Martin High School, and Greg Rando ’77, Executive Vice-President, presented the award at a ceremony in early March at The J.W. Marriott on Canal Street.

Joe was honored by the Board of Directors of Brother Martin High School for his commitment to the institute. In his acceptance speech Joe thanked his family and friends for their support and reflected on his time at Brother Martin. He spoke about his career and being a Catholic man. He gave special thanks to his wife, Erin, whom he referred to as not only his wife, but his best friend.

Alumnus of the Year events included a gentlemen’s breakfast and a Ladies’ Lunch, Mass celebrated by Fr. Paul Hart ’70 with Bishop Robert Muench ’60 CJ attending and a cocktail reception at the home of Karen and Chuck Stall ’76, the 2011 award recipient.

This award is presented annually by the Board of Directors of Brother Martin High School to an alumnus selected for contributions to his profession and for his religious, civic, business, educational and community involvement.

Biehl Receives Brother More Schaefer Award The Brother Martin faculty and staff joined together for the 27th annual Recognition Ceremony and Luncheon held at the Audubon Tea Room in January. This year, Chris Biehl received The Brother More Schaefer award for Excellence in Instruction, Formation and Witness. Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 commented, “This award goes beyond classroom instruction. It is about instruction. And formation. And Christian witness – all in the charism of our founder, Father Andre Coindre.

Chris and his wife Lauren have four children: Andy ’22, Matt, Emily, and Ashley. The family resides in Metairie.

Chris, now in his sixth year at Brother Martin, strives for excellence in and out of his classroom while also expecting it from his students. “I love what I do”, said Chris, and it shows wherever he is.

When he is not in the classroom, he can be found on the basketball court as the head basketball coach. He is in his fourth year as head coach holding a 95 – 47 record. He also holds Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from University of New Orleans and currently serves as an Advanced Math teacher and Formation Center proctor.

Over the course of his career in education, Chris has taught a variety of subjects such as Algebra I, Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, AP Biology, Health & P.E., World History, Civics, Religion, and English I and II. During his stint at UNO, he was the Men’s basketball assistant coach and a student assistant. Biehl has been honored throughout his 26 year teaching career as St. Tammany Parish’s “Best Mannered Teacher”; Teacher of the Year at Archbishop Hannan High School; a finalist for the St. Tammany Parish Teacher of the Year Award; and the Teacher of the Year at Pope John Paul High School in Slidell.

Campus News Wrestling State Championship Our Crusader Wrestling Team captured their 18th State Championship Title! The Crusaders finished with 319.5 points, almost 90 points in front of the 2nd place team. Four Crusaders won individual championships including Connor Hoffman ’20, 106 lbs., Daniel Croy ’19, 126 lbs., Patrick Evans ’19, 145 lbs. and Mack Brown ’19, 285 lbs. The Crusaders tied their own state record by placing all 14 starters.

Our student body gathered in the Conlin Gym to celebrate the Team’s State Championship. Coach Robert Dauterive ’84 welcomed and thanked the school community for their support before he presented all of the highlights and notables from the season.

Campus Open House

It was a night to remember for over 500 prospective students and their families who attended our annual Open House on November 9th.

Prospective students and families were eager to embark on their school tours to learn more about religious values, academic excellence, personal attention and friendly discipline from students, faculty and staff.

The night started with guests arriving for check-in by entering through the Thomas F. and Elaine P. Ridgley Fine Arts & Athletic Center before heading into the James B. Branton Chapel where they were greeted by Director of Admissions Carlos Bogran III ’99. Inside the Branton Chapel, families were welcomed by President John Devlin and Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00. Jackson Vicknair ’18 and Andrew Biehl ’22 spoke about the ‘Brother Martin Experience’ from a senior’s and an eighth grader’s point of view. They reminded prospective students that they too were once students in elementary school sitting in the very same seat in the Branton Chapel anxiously awaiting to start their high school career at Brother Martin and to hopefully be one of those “Men Who Never Say Die.” Gallagher expressed the dedication of the Brother Martin faculty to educating students for life, 4  Century II

commenting that “everything we do teaches something here at Brother Martin High School.”

Future Crusaders and their families then received a personal tour of our state of the art campus featuring the newly renovated Library. The evening featured thorough information on Crusader academics, alumni, athletics, campus ministry, as well as performances by the Crusader band, chorus and drama club.

Close-Up Trip Award During Thanksgiving Break six juniors and seniors joined moderator Christopher Vicknair on the annual Close Up trip to Washington, D.C. Through Gore ’18 site visits, lectures and workshop activities, high school students learn the political process and are encouraged to develop their own political efficacy. A highlight of the trip was Capitol Hill Day where our students had a chance to meet House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, Congressman Cedric Richmond, Senator John Kennedy and Senator Bill Cassidy.

This year, one of our trip participants was rewarded a fully-funded trip to Close Up from the Ricky Nuesslein Close-Up Endowment. This year’s recipient was Cameron Gore ’18. “For as long as I can remember, politics and history have been subjects I am extremely passionate about. As a result, this opportunity to attend the Close Up trip is kind and generous, and I cannot be more thankful for it,” said Gore.

The Ricky Nuesslein Close-Up Endowment honoring Ricky Nuesslein is established in the St. Aloysius Century Foundation to support Brother Martin High School. Ricky served in numerous roles during his 30-plus years at Brother Martin. He was the 2009 recipient of the Brother More Schaefer, S.C., Faculty Award and served as moderator of CloseUp. Contributions to The Ricky Nuesslein Close-Up Endowment can be made in care of the St. Aloysius Century Foundation.

Campus News March For Life

The Great Read

During the anniversary weekend of Roe v. Wade, a group of 27 students, along with faculty moderators, joined together for the 45th annual rally and the 2018 March for Life. The March took place in front of the National Mall to the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to the march, our Crusaders were able to experience parts of Washington D.C. and join other New Orleans area students for Mass and other rally events. On Friday morning, Crusaders had the pleasure of experiencing Mass with Archbishop Aymond ’67 CJ.

On October 25th, Brother Martin High School hosted a Great Read Assembly. This year, the book selected was The Red Bandanna by ESPN Correspondent Tom Rinaldi. Rinaldi tells the story of Welles Crowther and his heroic actions stemming from the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001. Mrs. Alison Crowther, Welles’s mother, was welcomed to campus to address the student body about her son, Welles Crowther.

CyberPatriots

Our CyberPatriots advanced in all three divisions of the State Round of competition to the semifinals.

This is the first time the teams have advanced in the brief yet successful history at the national youth cyber defense competition. Our NJROTC team placed 30 out of more than 1,000 teams nationwide, placing them in the top 3% of schools competing.

MLK Day of Service

Brother Martin students engaged in a day of service with 200 other Catholic school students to acknowledge the birthday and life’s work of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. on MLK Day Not Off, sponsored by the Archdiocese of New Orleans Office of Black Catholics.

All Saints’ Day Liturgy The Brother Martin faith community gathered together on November 1st to celebrate All Saints’ Day, a day during the liturgical year in which we honor those saints of the Catholic Church who have endured persecution in Jesus’ name. The school-wide Liturgy was celebrated

by Fr. Paul Hart ’70 and assisted by Brother Martin students.

Pep Rally

Crusaders moved out of the Conlin Gym for the first ever outdoor Pep Rally held in The Backyard. Student Council President Colby Coulon ’18 and members of the Student Council gathered the Crusaders, as the cheerleaders led cheers and the Crusader Band played some upbeat game-day songs, Dr. Tony Melito ’76 served as guest conductor for the Band and led them in “Word Up.” Members of the football team and the cross country team were introduced.

Junior High Cheer Clinic and Band Night

On November 3rd, Brother Martin hosted its annual Junior High Band Night and Cheer Clinic during the Brother Martin vs. Jesuit football game.

Respect Life Week

Brother Martin High School celebrated Respect Life Week from October 30th – November 3rd. The Crusaders for Life, Brother Martin’s Pro-Life Club, planned a spectacular week.

Faculty Day of Experience

The annual Faculty Day of Experience was held on February 19th, when the Brother Martin faculty and staff were asked to select one service agency from a list of seven that seemed interesting as well as informative. The day began with a viewing of the documentary, “Shelter”, produced by Vice Documentary Films about Covenant House. Faculty then went on site visits where they observed service in action. Faculty Day of Experience site visits included St. Mary of the Angel Head Start, The Good Shepherd Nativity Mission School, St. Michael Special School, Covenant House, Ozanam Inn and Cornerstone Builders. The day concluded with lunch at Café Reconcile.

Campus News Alumni Assist at Pep Rally

Former Crusader basketball standouts Ed McPherson ’08, Dante Butler ’11, Schane Rillieux ’11 and Myron Chapman ’12 led the Faculty Team to victory at the Winter Sports Pep Rally in early February. Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 signed the four alumni to a “one-day” contract to boost the faculty roster. The Brother Martin cheerleaders, band, winter sport teams and students cheered and showed their spirit for their fellow Crusaders as the teams prepared for competition.

’07 introduced special guests Mr. and Mrs. J. Donald Garvey ’50 SA. Mrs. Donnamaria Giambelluca, moderator of the Welcoming Diversity Organization, presented the Bro. Collin Dugas, S.C. and Ms. Judy Stewart awards for Social Justice. Receiving the Judy Stewart Social Justice Award were Adam Schwarzenbach ’18 and Connor Bertaut ’18 who were elected for this award by their fellow classmates. Two members of the Brother Martin Faculty and Staff receiving the Bro. Collin Dugas S.C. award were Ms. Debbie Dixon and Mr. Ian Supak. Both Ms. Dixon and Mr. Supak were honored for this award for their unselfish commitment to the betterment of our school, and were selected as the recipients by their colleagues.

Cub Crusader Clash

Mount Carmel Academy came to Brother Martin’s campus to participate in annual Cub Crusader Clash, an evening of fun relay-style games. Each year, there is a winner of the Cub Crusader Clash and the champion gets to keep the trophy at their school until the next year’s ‘Clash’. The Crusaders ended up winning 8-6, regaining the Cub Crusader Trophy.

Social Justice Mass

Following our Social Justice Liturgy, our group of March for Life participants met over lunch with very special Brother Martin guests: Mr. and Mrs. J. Donald Garvey ’50 SA. Mr. and Mrs. Garvey are amazing examples of Social Justice in our very own school community and our city. The Garvey’s graciously donated funds that allowed our Crusaders to attend the March for Life pilgrimage in Washington D.C. this past January. Our March for Life attendees and the Brother Martin community are forever grateful for the impact that the Garvey’s have on the greater New Orleans community and on our students, particularly the Crusaders for Life Club members.

The Class of 2018 along with their ‘Crusader Dads’ attended the annual Senior Father-Son Dinner & Games Night in early March. Seniors and their dads joined together for a fun-filled night with great company, food, and activities.

During this Lenten Season, our Brother Martin school community celebrated our annual Social Justice Liturgy on February 23rd.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Kyle Dave ’89, Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Belle Chasse. The Liturgical theme of our Social Justice Mass was shaped on our commitment to Catholic Social Teaching. At the conclusion of Mass, Jerry Ursin 6  Century II

Students in Dr. David Jouandot’s ’03 AP Chemistry class utilized 3D printer software to design lab equipment for an upcoming chemistry lab.

The Alumni Office hosted the 3rd Quarter Senior Lunch in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace.

Students enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch while Director of Alumni Scott Corrente ’83 congratulated them on their work thus far and encouraged the seniors to “finish strong”. The seniors filled the Terrace and socialized from tableto-table as they enjoy their last couple of months together as classmates.

Campus News Athletics Basketball

Tyler Epps ’18 and Tyler Lally ’18 were named to the 2018 Clarion Herald Elite Boys’ Basketball Epps ’18 Lally ’18 Team. They were recognized for their talent and leadership on the court.

Cheerleaders Jessica Spitale Fresina, current head coach for our Crusader cheerleading squad, has been named head coach for the Junior Coed US National team.

Fresina, who was a cheerleader captain of the Brother Martin Cheer Team during her high school years and captain of the Louisiana State University team, was also a two-time high school coed partner stunt national champion. She coached the St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School Team to three national championships before taking on coaching responsibilities for Brother Martin.

Track & Field Hunter Appleton ’19 repeated as the State Champion in the 3200 meter at the State Indoor Championship. He also ran a 9:07 in the 3200 at the FSU Relays to place 6th and broke his own school record.

Extr acurricular Band The Crusader Band joined the Dominican Debs at Joe Yenni Stadium for their annual performance at the LMEA District VI Marching Band Assessment in late October. The Crusader Band was led by Drum Major Stephen Gonzales ’18 and Drum Captain Michael Connick ’18. The Deb Captains were Madelyn McGovern and Virginia Babin. The Band and Debs received Sweepstakes Superior Ratings!

Cameron Balser ’19 has been chosen by The Louisiana Music Educators Association for its All-State Orchestra. He was the highest-scoring percussionist in the orchestra wind ensemble section from the association’s District VI.

On National Signing Day, seniors Rhett Fleetwood, Zachary Breaux and Jared Gaudet signed their Letters of Intent to play football at the collegiate level.

Soccer

Our 2017 Brother Martin football season was truly remarkable. Although our football team faced adversity early on in the season, our “men who never say die” won six of their last seven games to make another appearance in the State quarterfinals. “As always, the successful 2017 campaign was made possible by the foundation laid by our previous Brother Martin football teams and came to fruition because of our remarkable 2017 Senior Class. This 2017 ‘football family’ understood and successfully bought into the ‘process,’” said Coach Mark Bonis.

Seniors Blake Robbins, Brandon Robbins, Ethan Mauterer, Michael Barkemeyer, Nicholas LeBlanc and Ryan Simoneaux have been named to the 2017-18 LHSAA All-Academic Team.

Beach Volleyball The Brother Martin Beach Volleyball team entered the current season as heavy favorites, returning all starters. The Crusaders finished the championships with a 2-1 team record, picking up the school’s second championship victory.

Chorus

Zachary Stolberg ’19 was named to the NOLA. com All-Metro Team as one of the top defenders in the Metro area. Zachary helped lift the Crusaders into the second round of the Division I playoffs.

Swimming The swim team completed their season with a strong finish in the LHSAA Division 1 State Championship Meet over the Thanksgiving break.

With only four events in scoring positions, the Crusaders were able to place 15th out of 25 teams.

All three Crusader relays finished in the Top 16. The relays were made up of Jonathan Bullock ’18 (Captain), Will Ott ’18, Sam Montgomery ’18, Alex East ’19 (Captain), Ryan O’Connor ’19 and Kevin-James Watkins ’20.

Three consecutive Chorus Directors were present at the annual Christmas Concert. Executive VP, Greg Rando ‘77, Founder of Brother Martin Chorus Chorus, Mike Cottingham and Chorus Director Kevin Caparotta ‘88.

Our Chorus participated in the LMEA District Music Performance Assessment at UNO in early March.

Andrew Butler ’18, Carl Davis ’18 and Hunter Dunn ’19 performed at the Louisiana Music Educators Association Solo & Ensemble Assessment at Dominican High School. Each student received a superior rating and is eligible to proceed to the State Vocal Rally in April at LSU. Fishing Club

National Honor Society

Brother Martin Lacrosse participated in a day of service at Catholic Charities Houston, while in Texas for competition.

Brother Martin High School’s National Honor Society hosted the Elementary Quiz Bowl on Saturday, March 3rd. Twenty grammar schools from across the Greater New Orleans area competed in several rounds of the Quiz Bowl competition.

Martial Arts

Over the Mardi Gras break, members of the Crusader Fishing Club assisted in a service project in City Park. The project was a joint effort between the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the staff of City Park New Orleans.

Culinary Crusaders

Culinary Crusader members Ian Kot ’19 and Daniel St. Etienne ’18 advanced to the finals of the Ochsner EatFitNOLA Challenge.

Key Club

The Brother Martin Martial Arts Team competed in the USKA Heart of a Hero Southern Louisiana Regional Tournament with several team members taking home individual awards.

Mu Alpha Theta

The Mu Alpha Theta Club, under the direction of Eileen Brocato, Patrick McClain and Ryan Skyta, competed in the Catholic High Tournament.

In February, they hosted their own coveted tournament on Brother Martin’s campus.

In early February, the Mu Alpha Theta Club hosted a combined Middle School and High School Mu Alpha Theta Competition. The tournament had 615 students competing from 28 different schools.

Crusader juniors and seniors ran the tournament while 8th, 9th and 10th graders were able to participate in the Individual Test.

Our Key Club recently spent an afternoon at St. Michael’s Special School. The Key Clubbers played in a volleyball tournament and then shared pizza, cookies and conversation with young men at St. Michael’s.

NJROTC Our NJROTC captured a first place win in the season opening Drill Meet at Pearl River High School.

The Crusader Company led the competition of 13 schools winning first place in Academics, Personnel Inspection, Unarmed Regulation, Armed Exhibition and a third place win in Unarmed Exhibition.

Over 100 Cadets from Brother Martin’s NJROTC Crusader Company gathered with their dates and honored guests celebrating the 51st Annual Military Ball in March. Unlike any other Military Ball the Brother Martin NJROTC has hosted, the evening was full of eventful surprises with a touch of Navy tradition throughout. The Ball started with the introduction of the senior Cadets and their guests under the sword arch along with a formal introduction, with military honors, of Commander Bruce Nolan ’90, US Navy (Retired), Chief Petty Officer Terry Necaise, US Navy (Retired) and Principal Ryan Gallagher ‘00.

Matthew Alfonso ’18 The Brother Martin Crusader Rugby Team defeated Germantown 27 -17 for its third win as the Crusaders started strong.

Student Ministry

One of the most important responsibilities of the Student Ministry Team at Brother Martin is the 8th Grade Visit Program. These visits allow seniors to openly share their experiences with and impart knowledge on young Crusaders.

To help students in their transition from grammar school to Brother Martin, Senior Student Ministers regularly visit their group of eighth graders. Before the Mardi Gras break, groups met in their religion classes and discussed the underlying themes of Mardi Gras and Lent.

World Culture Club

In March, the World Culture Club held its annual International Food Festival. The Culture Club, in conjunction with the World Language Students, offered an array of exotic and regional fare representing the culture of the languages offered at Brother Martin, and other cultures, as well.

Students, faculty, and staff enjoyed appetizers, entrees and desserts from Middle Eastern, Asian, European, Central & South American, and even Cajun cuisines. The festival brought in over 150 guests and all proceeds, from the admission fee, go to support the Missions of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Seniors Matthew Alfonso and his twin brother Ryan Alfonso were awarded a scholarship from the American Italian Renaissance Foundation for their excellence in academics and athletics.

Five Crusader seniors earned recognition in the Southeast Regional round of the Scholastic Writing Awards, a national creative writing competition.

These authors submitted written stories that successfully earned awards in three different categories. The Scholastic Writing Awards receives over 300,000 submissions annually from writers in grades 7-12.

Celbration of the Crest with pearls and zoot suits that were full of glitz and glamour.

The chair-couple for the event was Missy and Mark Hildreth and co-chaircouples were Ami and Charlie Martinez ’85, Renee and Allen Boudreaux, and Kim and Jamie Munoz.

The jazzy night began with a premium Patron Party that included silent auction Mark and Missy Hildreth, Renee Boudreaux, Kim Munoz, items and raffles. Ladies of the Shield Easter Egg Hunt Friday, March 23rd, the Easter Bunny arrived at Brother Martin High School for the annual Ladies of the Shield and Alumni Association’s Easter Egg Hunt. Attendees enjoyed treats, games and a spirited egg hunt in the back yard.

Day at the Races On a Sunday afternoon in late February, over 170 alumni gathered together with family and friends for the Brother Martin Day at the Races at the New Orleans Fair Grounds Race Course. Guests dined in the Black Gold Room which featured an assorted New Orleans cuisine of corned beef and cabbage, blackened shrimp, Tortellini and chicken.

Guests watched their favorite jockeys and horses on the race course from the private event balcony.

Career Day Over 68 alumni were on campus giving insight into more than 48 careers at our annual Career Day. Students attended three 25-minute sessions. Ryan O’ Connor ’19 said “Career Day provided many opportunities to help each student for their future.

Throughout the day we were given advice and professional tips for choosing not only a career, but a vocation.”

Director of Alumni Scott Corrente ’83 welcomed alumni in the Library before they headed to their classrooms. Speakers spoke about the importance of balancing a career with a home life. It was also a day for these professionals to reminisce and remember why they chose their career path or how they inspired former students to go into the same field as they did.

In addition to the sessions, other alumni speakers met individually with seniors to share in-depth information about their careers.

Alumni Day at Tulane Scott Corrente ’83 and Principal Ryan Gallagher ’00 recently visited Crusader alumni currently attending Tulane University in late January. They spoke about college readiness and “life after high school graduation”. Juancarlos Torres II ’16, commented that “not only did the teachers at Brother Martin teach us the curriculum, but were tremendous role models.” Torres is currently majoring in cell and molecular biology.

Ryan Gallagher ’00 enjoyed the opportunity to reminisce his time at Tulane where he earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees. Ryan reflected that “with the exception of watching our current students on a daily basis excel both inside and outside of the classroom, nothing is more rewarding than hearing from our

recent graduates about how prepared they feel after having left Brother Martin as they attack their next challenges – socially, spiritually, and academically. It is so rewarding to see our young men in action as our recent alums grow into mature young men who are indeed learning how to make a life – one of service, scholarship, and stewardship.” In addition, the Crusader presence is very strong on Tulane’s campus as many alumni are involved with their majors in digital media, finance, engineering and extracurricular clubs. As a thank you for visiting, the young alumni received various Brother Martin gift items and information on upcoming opportunities to get involved with the alumni association.

Clapp Family Tradition Will Clapp ’14 declared for the 2018 NFL draft. Will was a 3-year starter at LSU. He was a Rimington Award finalist this past season. The award is given annually to the top center in college football. Will was named a team captain for LSU this year and graduated this past fall. His father Tommy ’83 also played at LSU from 1983-1987. His brother Jacob ’16 was a state wrestling champion and football letterman at Brother Martin and is currently enrolled in the US Merchant Marine Academy. His brother Matthew ’17 currently plays for LSU and is youngest brother Michael ’19 is a Crusader football and wrestling letterman.

Harold “Harry” Bologna ’86 Scholarship Harold “Harry” Bologna ’86 is a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief (SEAL) with over 22 years Special Operations experience. After completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training, Harry went on to serve at SEAL Teams Two and Four deploying to Europe, South and Central America. Harry was then assigned to Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG) where he made multiple deployments to Southeast Asia and the Middle East supporting both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During his tenure at NSWDG, Harry held several senior operational leadership positions. He also served in both the Operations and Training Departments. As a recognized authority at NSWDG, he was responsible for planning and training hundreds of special operators in countless live fire training evolutions.

Harry also has an extensive medical background and uniquely served as a SEAL Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC), where he was required to function independently from a Medical Officer with duties including advanced diving medicine, remote patient care, emergency trauma, preventative medicine, and environmental and occupational health.

Harry has been awarded five Bronze Stars (three with Valor), two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, two Joint Service Achievement Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various unit and campaign awards.

On October 22, 2015, Harry was working as a contractor with a U.S. national defense agency and stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan. As a result of the explosion, he lost both of his legs and suffered a broken pelvis and internal injuries. Yet, as with his prior 22 year career as a US Navy SEAL, Harry continues to inspire us with his positive and extraordinary approach to everyday life.

Harry is married to Julie who is a strong, resilient, and courageous woman and who has faithfully supported him throughout his long Navy career and has been by his side at every step of his recovery. Harry and Julie live in Virginia Beach, Va. with their two beautiful daughters, Amanda and Ashley.

The St. Aloysius Century Foundation Board of Directors established the Harold “Harry” Bologna ’86 Scholarship on August 22, 2017. It is one of only three similarly established scholarships. The other two are The Henry P. and Agnes B. Sobert Scholarship and The Jack Schommer Scholarship.

In recognition of Harold, donations to this scholarship can be made to the St. Aloysius Century Foundation.

The Crusader band played The Star-Spangled Banner, and NROTC Commander Bruce Nolan ’90 (Ret. USN) spoke on behalf of the school and the Cadets.

Chief Terry Necaise (Ret. USN) explained to friends and family Jacques’‘Chief’s Box & 219 Helmet’ that was donated to the school by his family. Following the ceremony, a small reception was held in the Meyer Building for family and guests.

2018 Tennis Tournament New Venue City Park May 11, 2018 DJ Augustin ’06 Returns to New Orleans D. J. Augustin ’06 returned to New Orleans with the Orlando Magic in late October.

Members of the Brother Martin community were on hand to welcome and cheer on D.J. with a true “Crusader Homecoming.” He was able to take time out of his busy night to take photos with some new and familiar faces from Brother Martin. Crispito II: Electric Boogaloo In late December, alumni, parents, family and friends competed in Trivia Night VI in the Benson Mall. A record 20 teams played trivia, ate crispitos and enjoyed the holiday evening. St. Aloysius Century Foundation Campaign to Benefit Brother Martin High School Phase III Attention … Attention for Announcements, Please!

Ah,yes, daily announcements after 5th period. We remember them well.

Our Brother Martin memories are unique to each of us, but what we all share in common is our time together in the Mall.

We gathered in the Mall at the beginning of each new school year for orientation. We met at our table on Monday mornings to talk about the past weekend. We ate lunch in the Mall (if it were Wednesday and you’re young enough to remember you ate crispitos).

We studied there, and we even attended dances and school banquets in the Mall. In short, we formed friendships in the Mall that have lasted a lifetime.

Staying true to our mission of “meeting the needs of a changing world,” we have embarked on Phase III of our Capital Campaign.

In Phases I & II we built the Ridgley Center, Meyer Building, and Branton Chapel; renovated Farley Field; and completed significant upgrades to the main classroom building, Conlin Gym, and our green spaces.

Phase III includes: Completed • Modernization and relocation of our library to the 2nd floor • Relocation and upgrade of our Formation Center Start Date May 2018 • Expansion and renovation of the Tom and Gayle Benson Mall • Relocation and expansion of food services Next • Renovation of the Conlin entrance and lobby The total cost of Phase III is $6.8 million. Thus far, we have raised $5.1 million. We need your help to reach our goal! Any amount is significant and appreciated.

Phase III is another example of our continued commitment to providing the finest learning environment for our students.

Library The library, relocated to the 2nd floor, is a renewed, future-ready space that is inviting, light-filled, and engaging. It has four zones: the main area with the research collection and conversational seating, the seminar space, the professional collaborative area for teachers, and the four conference booths.

• Movable furniture adapts for small and large group instruction and collaborative learning.

• Excellent print and virtual collections support students’ interests and academic needs.

• The seminar space is large enough for full-class instruction.

• Two mobile Google Jamboards work in coordination with a student’s laptop and allow teachers and students to share and present instructional materials.

Formation Center The Formation Center is, staffed by faculty and National Honor Society students and is designed to assist students in reaching their full academic potential through tutoring and homework assistance. The Center has a multi-use copier/scanner, projector system for large group instruction and 12 desktop computers.

In early December, the Ladies of the Shield hosted their annual Holiday Home Tour in charming Old Metairie. The Patron Party was held under the grand oaks at 105 Mulberry Drive. The other homes provided on the tour were 12 Farnham Place, 100 Homestead Avenue and 211 Sycamore Drive.

SAINTS PRE-GAME PARTY Alumni and friends gathered in the Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center for a Saints Pre-Game Party hosted by Gary Froeba ’71, Managing Director of Operational Programs and Regional Vice President of Omni Hotels & Resorts. BROTHER MARTIN ALUMNI DAY AT LSU In late November Director of Alumni Scott Corrente ’83 and Assistant Dean of Students Mark Bordelon visited the Louisiana State University campus to visit Crusader alumni. Over 40 alumni shared stories, filled out a brief survey about their college readiness and their college plans and picked up some Brother Martin giveaways. Alumni also described their time on Elysian Fields Ave. as great and very helpful. Harrison Trepagnier ’15 commented that his experience at Brother Martin “was like no other.” In addition, Brent Clement ’17 said, “my time there was incredible and I had some of the best experiences of my life.” The Crusaders have a strong presence at LSU and many are involved in school organizations ranging from athletics to service to student government.

Lafayette Chapter

Director of Alumni Scott Corrente ’83 and Mark Benedetto ’77 visited with alumni at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in late January. Young alumni were asked to share their college experiences and talk with them about their academic life in Lafayette. They revealed that the courses they mostly tested out of were English, Math and Science. Because of the interest in those courses, several alumni are majoring in math, industrial technology, insurance and risk management, civil engineering and sports management. They reflected on their high school experiences and described them as challenging, privileged and amazing. As a thank you for visiting, alumni were treated to various Brother Martin gift items while receiving updated news on the abundant activities occurring on Elysian Fields Ave.

Memphis Chapter

While in Memphis for a varsity wrestling tournament, Kenny Spellman ‘84, Director of Development, Robbie Dauterive ‘84, Head Wrestling Coach, and James Casadaban ‘06, Assistant Wrestling Coach, met with and updated alumni on campus news.

Eric Evans ‘77, Principal at Elohi Strategic Advisors, and Eric Ellis ‘96, Operations Manager at CMC Logistics, shared stories about their careers and families. The Crusader wrestlers placed 2nd at the Black Horse Invitational which featured 24 teams from three states.

Northshore Chapter

MANDEVILLE/COVINGTON SOCIAL The Alumni Office hosted the Mandeville/ Covington Chapter Social in late November at the Columbia St. Tap Room with over 60 attendees. This annual event for graduates and their guests is always a favorite for residents in the Northshore area. “I always look forward to our annual Northshore Chapter Social and each year it seems to grow. I loved seeing old friends and meeting the recent graduates at this event. It amazes me how many alumni reside or even work on the Northshore that I was not aware of in the past. I am looking forward to returning to another chapter event,” commented John Pettavino ’86. The Mandeville/Covington Chapter has over 1,300 alumni residing in the area and continues to grow. Alumni Highlights Ray Brandt ’65 SA, owner and dealer principal at Ray Brandt Nissan in Harvey, will receive an honorary PhD from Holy Cross College. Ray has been elected to the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame and he serves on the WWII Board as vice-chairman of the Finance Committee. Lastly, Ray was nominated for the 2017 TIME Dealer of the Year award. He is one of a select group of 49 dealer nominees from across the country honored at the 100th annual National Automobile Dealers Association Convention & Exposition in New Orleans in 2017.

Tristan Sands, MD, PhD ’95, is new faculty at Columbia University Medical Center in the Division of Child Neurology and is part of the Institute for Genomic Medicine. This December, his abstract won a Young Investigator Award from the American Epilepsy Society. Most recently, Tristan has been selected to receive a 2018 Irving Institute Bench to Bedside Pilot Award for his gene discovery proposal. This year, working with IGM genetic counselors, Tristan will open a new Translational Clinic for the Genetic Epilepsies, which will offer interpretation of genetic variants in patients with epilepsy as a service to providers.

Jimmy Clark CJ recently completed writing the Krewe of Iris Centennial Book.

Three years in the making, the 176-page coffee table edition covers the post WWI beginnings of Iris through the 2017 Centennial. Iris is the oldest female Carnival Krewe in New Orleans.

Bobby Ohler, M.Ed. SA retired from education in July, 2017 after serving as a teacher, administrator and principal for 45 years in Catholic Education. Bobby worked at both Holy Cross and Archbishop Rummel High Schools and served 26 years as principal of St. Margaret Mary School in Slidell. As a professional musician, and owner of Harbor Band Music Services, LLC, Bobby received the St. Tammany President’s award as musical artist of the year for 2016, and currently pursues his music business on a full-time basis.

William Babin and his high school sweetheart and wife, Jocelyn, retired from the martial arts industry on after teaching Taekwondo for 35 years in Phoenix, AZ. They have two grown sons, Jacob and Nicholas, and four grandchildren. Bill is continuing the musical career he began during his high school years. Mike Saucier, President of The Gulf States Companies, is now serving his second year as a board member of the St. Tammany West Chamber of Commerce. Mike is also the Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Subcommittee which monitors codes and ordinances in St. Tammany Parish. Gulf States has four divisions which serve the southeast United States, including Development, Residential & Commercial Real Estate Brokerage, Construction, and Property Management.

Barry Lemoine was recently named by the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce as its Citizen of the Year. This award recognizes his involvement, leadership and volunteerism that positively impacts St. Bernard Parish and makes the community a richer, more meaningful place to live.

Juan McWilliams is a member of the 2017 Grambling University Legends Hall of Fame class. Juan played for Grambling from 198385. He was drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates in 1985.

Robert Dauterive ’84, head wrestling coach at Brother Martin, has been named as a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national coach of the year award in the sport of wrestling. Eight finalists, from across the nation, will be honored during The National Coach of the Year Awards Banquet which will take place at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national convention at the Ramkota Hotel in Sioux Falls, SD. Robbie was nominated for this national honor by Louisiana’s high school coaches’ association. The selection was based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship year and winning percentage. The nominees and finalists are evaluated by experts in the field of coaching using a sport-specific rubric to assign points in each category. The National High School Athletic Coaches Association is the oldest coaches’ association in the nation formed by coaches, for coaches, and has been recognizing national coaches of the year since 1978. “I think this is a great recognition for the entire Crusader wrestling program,” commented Coach Dauterive.

Carl Mistretta Jr. has served as Executive Director of The First Tee of The Palm Beaches since 2011 and was recently honored by The First Tee home office for completing all necessary requirements to become a Recognized Executive of his chapter. The First Tee is a youth development organization that uses golf as a vehicle.

Mike Dupuis is president/owner of Intelli-Risk, LLC in Covington. Intelli-Risk is a professional consulting, training and investigative firm specializing in active shooter response training, safety/security, risk management/loss control, civilian firearm and self-defense training and private investigations. They work with houses of worship, businesses and schools to ensure they are trained to protect the safety and well-being of its employees, customers and guests.

Joe Lopinto ’94 has been elected Sheriff of Jefferson Parish.

Joe worked as a deputy for seven years before earning a law degree from Loyola University. He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2007 and headed the criminal justice committee. Joe returned the Sheriff’s Office in 2016 as the department’s in-house counsel before being appointed chief deputy and, later, chief of operations. Joe took over leadership of the department after Newell Normand stepped down.

Jeffrey Meyers recently cofounded and serves as managing director at Asher Meyers, L.L.C., a dispute advisory and forensic service. Jeffrey received his Masters of Science in Mathematics from the U.N.O. with a concentration in Statistics. He earned a Bachelor of Science with major in Mathematics from L.S.U. graduating Magna Cum Laude from LSU Honors College where he also earned Sophomore Honors Distinction. Jeffrey has been an adjunct professor of mathematics (algebra, finite mathematics and statistics) at Loyola University since 2006.

Trooper Jack Uhle was recognized as the Troop N “Trooper of the Year” by the Louisiana State Police for overall outstanding service to the Louisiana State Police. He was also given the Blue Max Award in 2017 for most recovered stolen vehicles with arrests in a 12-month period.

Andrew Woodroof, Project Engineer at Digital Engineering, received the 2017 Robby Cangelosi Award at the ACEC/L Project Outlook Conference in Baton Rouge. This award recognizes the accomplishments of a young professional engineer who is contributing to the profession and demonstrating the ability to positively impact the community through professional accomplishments and community involvement.

Louis DiVincenti D.V.M. is the Director of Animal Health and Conservation at Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY. Arvind Viswanathan has been presented with the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Order of the Blackstone Award. This award honors individuals who are champions in Criminal Defense Law.

2005

Ryan Brock was inducted into the Loyola University Wolf Pack Hall of Fame. Ryan finished his playing career with 1,706 total points, making him the second all-time leading scorer in Wolf Pack history.

In his three seasons with Loyola from 2008 through 2011 he earned NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors in 2008-09, NAIA All-American Third Team honors in 2009-10 and NAIA All-American Second Team honors in 2010-11. He helped lead the Crusaders to two state championships and was twice named to the Class 5A All-State Team.

Alumni Around the World Joel Galatas ’05 recently visited China. He made stops in Shanghai and Beijing. His favorite city was Shanghai.

During his first trip to the Far East Joel’s most surprising discovery was the vast size of both cities (#1 and #2 largest cities in the world by population). The food was questionable in Beijing and memorable in Shanghai and the people were obsessed with an American visitor. He was asked about 4-5 times a day to take a picture with them and shake their hand. The most memorable part of the trip was a full day hike up to the unrestored portion of the Great Wall of China.

Will Clapp ’14 has been named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, which is given to the nation’s top center.

Brendon Hayes ’15 and his Central Florida teammates completed an undefeated season and were American conference champions.

Irv Smith Jr. ’16 and his Alabama teammates won the 2018 College Football National Championship.

Andre Walker ’16 Houston Baptist University sophomore defensive end, has been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District 7 First Team. Andre has a 3.52 GPA as a biochemistry/molecular biology major.

Will Clapp has declared for the 2018 NFL draft. Will spent his college career at LSU where he was a three-year starter earning first team All-SEC honors in 2016 and 2017 and was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy in 2017, which is the award given to the top center in college football. Will graduated this past fall from LSU with a degree in Sports Administration.

grow and gain popularity,” commented Kraig de Lanzac ’86. Participants ranged from the Class of 1951 up to the Class of 2017. The night before the game, band members gathered in the Prof. Taverna Band Room on campus, socialized and rehearsed for their big night at the Brother Martin vs. Jesuit football game. They also received their official t-shirts. On Friday, alumni, family and friends attended a tailgate party hosted by the Alumni Office with great food and music. Participants also met current Brother Martin band members and shared past and current stories about what it is like to be member of the Crusader Band. Then, Alumni Band headed into the stadium to join the Crusader Band in some musical numbers and performed a few of their own. During halftime, the Alumni Band joined forces with the Crusader Marching Band and members of the Junior High Band for an outstanding performance on the field. The Crusaders defeated the Jesuit Blue Jays by a score of 23-17.

S.C. ’71 received a fast education on the rules of lacrosse during the JVB Game. The JV Team then scrimmaged the alumni to close out the day. The alumni avenged the earlier loss and outscored the JV team by a score of 13-2.

“The Alumni Game was always one of my favorite days as a player at Brother Martin, but it was even more special to come back as a graduate and play with some old teammates and new players,” said Kirby Steiffel ’16, “It’s awesome to see the program still growing in the right direction.”

Basketball Reunon & Alumni Game Members of our basketball community gathered for the annual Reunion & Alumni Game in early January. Since its inception in 2014, alumni players, former coaches and families have gathered together for some friendly competition and fun.

Alumni were split up into two teams with Bill Gallagher ’71 leading “Team Gold” and Michael Lemmon leading “Team Crimson.”

“Team Gold” claimed victory by a score of 46-39.

Coach Gallagher commented, “Better than winning the alumni game was just seeing all of those alumni back on campus and enjoying themselves.

What a great time talking about old games and championships. All of those guys can still play, too!”

In addition, Milton Dureau ’69 CJ, Ron Brisbi ’67 SA and Jeff Hotard ’07 officiated the game.

Coaches Chris Biehl and Tommy Smith ’71 took a break from their regular basketball duties and handled the official’s table. Bro. Neal Golden ’57 CJ, Coach Andy Russo and many others watched and reminisced about their years on the court and sidelines. During his stint, Coach Russo coached the Cor Jesu Kingsmen for one year and later the Brother Martin Crusaders for four years. He led the Crusaders to the semi-finals three times and won two state titles as Crusader coach.

After the game some alumni showcased their skills in the three-point contest. Schane Rillieux ’11 was the winner this year and can claim bragging rights over defending champ John Lally ’92.

Following the three-point contest, participants and families were treated to a post-game reception in the Benson Mall.

Rugby Reunion

The annual Alumni Rugby Match took place in City Park in January. More than 30 former Rugby Team members joined the current squad for a spirited game of touch rugby. The annual Alumni Game continues the tradition of fellowship and

camaraderie that are hallmarks of the game of rugby. Alumni met up at Finn McCool’s Irish Pub after the match for an evening social.

“We always welcome former players at practice,

2018-2020 Alumni Board of Directors Nominees Matthew Adams ‘04 - Matthew was born and raised in the Greater New Orleans area where he graduated from Brother Martin High School in 2004. As a Crusader he excelled both academically and athletically earning various distinguished honors on the baseball diamond. Matthew accepted a full athletic scholarship to attend Delgado Community College where he maintained a 3.9 GPA during his 2 year academic career as well as lettering both years for baseball. After Delgado Community College, Matthew attended the University of New Orleans earning a Bachelor’s of Science in Management graduating Cum Laude in 2008 and was a member of Sigma Iota Epsilon, Betta Gamma Sigma and Golden Key National Honor Society. Matthew began his professional career in 2008 with a national equipment rental company where he partook in a management training program. In March of 2013 he was promoted to General Manager of an equipment dealer. In 2016, seeking a greater work/life balance, Matthew took on the challenge of a new career as Territory Sales Manager for an international mechanical pipe joining manufacturer- Victaulic. Matthew has served as a Board Member for the Associated Builders and Contractors of New Orleans and volunteers for his son’s school (Men’s Club and Assistant Baseball Coach). In addition, he is a volunteer Assistant Coach for Brother Martin’s Freshman Baseball Team and serves on the Alumni Baseball Committee. Ryan J. Bordenave ’94 - Ryan serves as the Retail Attraction and Real Estate Development Specialist for the Downtown Development District. His role is responsible for attracting local, regional and national retail, dining and entertainment concepts to the Downtown retail corridor of Canal Street. During his time with the DDD, he has worked with numerous well-established brands including: Neiman-Marcus, Nordstom, Tiffany & Co., H&M, Forever XXI, Vom Fass, The Art of Shaving, Williams-Sonoma, RH and Arhaus. Outside of his work with the DDD, he is a media consultant for NPR member station WWNO 89.9 FM and has renovated several historic houses in New Orleans. He is a past vice-chair for the Friends of Lafitte Corridor, a community non-profit dedicated to the development of the Lafitte Greenway in Mid-City. Ryan is a life-long resident of New Orleans and resides in the City Park Triangle.

Ron Brisbi ’67 SA - Ron grew up in Gentilly and is a lifelong resident of the New Orleans area. Graduating from St. Aloysius in 1967 and UNO in 1971, Ron now lives in Lakeshore (Lakeview). It has been a long and proud tradition within the Brisbi family to attend St. Aloysius and Brother Martin, with 9 family members graduating from the schools. Retired in 2012 after working for three major corporations in sales management, Ron is currently employed as the Varsity Golf Coach at Brother Martin. As member of the Brother Martin Alumni Board for the past 14 years he had the opportunity to see many positive changes within the school. Serving as the chairman for the Brother Martin Golf Tournament for the past 18 years the event has grown in all aspects and is a major fundraiser for the school. Ron has been a member of the Greater New Orleans Football Officials Association for the past 39 years and past president of the Pass Christian / Henderson Point Civic Association.

Chuck Camp ’10 - Chuck is a Brother Martin class of 2010 graduate and was a member of the Alumni Board for the 2016-2018 term. During his time at Brother Martin, he was a 3-year varsity letterman as well as being involved in many student organizations such as Student Ministry, Student Ambassadors, Student Council, and head of the Conlin Crazy’s. He was the captain of the baseball team and received the Crimson Shield Award for Versatility. After graduation, he remains involved by serving as the Junior Legion baseball coach during the summers. Chuck graduated with honors from LSU in 2014 with a B.S. in Biology. Now, he attends Xavier Pharmacy School and will receive his PharmD in 2019. Frequently attending many Brother Martin events, Chuck still serves as an ambassador for the school that he loves.

Scot Craig ’80 - Scot is Chef and Proprietor of Katie’s Restaurant. He donates time, food and financial support to various Brother Martin events. He has served as a judge for the annual Crusader Cook-off, he has hosted Crimson and Gold Network socials at Katie’s Restaurant and he recruited James Carville to speak at a CGN event. Scot has participated in Career Day and he sponsors the summer basketball league. He hosted his class’ 35th reunion at Katie’s. Scot regularly attends various Brother Martin events including the Celebration of the Crest, Marty Gras and football and basketball games. His son, Connor, is in the Class of 2019 and he is a member of the Medical Team for football and he is a basketball team manager. Scot has a great love and sense of pride in the values and education of Brother Martin High School and he is proud to share the story of his school.

Gary Delahoussaye ’74 - Gary has been active with Brother Martin since graduation assisting in a variety of fundraising efforts. He has helped coordinate all of his class reunions and is one of the founding members of the Brother Martin High School Fishing Rodeo and also the Crimson and Gold Network. He has been instrumental in having the Class of ’74 provide the lunch service for the Brother Martin Golf Tournament for the past numbers of years. He currently serves on the Alumni Board of Directors and continues his service on the Fishing Rodeo Committee. Gary has been selling insurance for the past 37 years. Gary has been working with Eustis Insurance and Benefits, LLC for the past 27 years. A second generation insurance man, Gary has significant experience in placing coverage for professional sport teams, medical transportation, food processors, automobile dealerships, investment property, restaurants and a wide variety of other commercial accounts. Gary has been married to his high school sweetheart for 37 years and is the proud father of 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 1 more on the way. Gary is also an avid fisherman.

Kraig de Lanzac, M.D., FASA ‘86 - Kraig received his medical doctorate at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1993, completed his residency in anesthesiology at LSUHSC in 1997 and is a board certified physician anesthesiologist, who in January joined the Tulane School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology. Prior to that time, Kraig was the founding member and head of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medical Consultants, LLC, a seven-physician group, and practiced at Slidell Memorial Hospital for over 13 years, where he was an active member of the medical staff, served on the Medical Executive Committee for over a decade, and was the Chief-of-Staff in 2016 and 2017. Kraig is the Director 30  Century II

from Louisiana to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Board of Directors and the immediate Past-President of the Louisiana Society of Anesthesiologists. He is the Chair of the ASA Committee on Communications and is a member of several other national professional committees. Kraig has been an active member of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Board since 2010, and served as the President of the Alumni Board in 2014 - 2016. Kraig is also the President of the Brother Martin Parents Club. Kraig and his wife, Rhen, and their two children are actively involved in the Brother Martin Community through charitable donations, volunteering at school and alumni events, participating in Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni functions, and being the proud parents of a member of the Brother Martin Class of 2018. Kraig along with Michael Hotstream and David Connick reinstituted the Brother Martin Alumni Band in 2006 and he remains a member of the planning committee for this organization and its annual social and performance. Kraig and Rhen have served as Co-Chairs of the Celebration of the Crest Patron Party and Chairs of the Celebration of the Crest. Kraig is a member of the President’s Dinner Committee, the Marty Gras Benefit Concert Committee, and the Phase III Steering Committee. He has also served as a Parents’ Drive Class Captain for the past six years. Kraig believes that the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Alumni Board has done a fantastic job in keeping the alumni of Cor Jesu, St. Aloysius, and Brother Martin involved in the school and the community. Kraig would like to help to continue the tradition that has been built within our alumni association as a continuing member of the Board. Milton Dureau, Jr. ’69 CJ - Milton is the father of Matthew ’99 and Zachary ’04. He received a B.S. (Chemistry) from Tulane University, 1973 and was employed by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office from 1973-2011. Milton retired from JPSO in November, 2011 (position at retirement was Commander of Laboratory Services which included administration and oversight of Crime Lab, DNA Lab, Crime Scene, Photo Lab and Property and Evidence Divisions – approx. 60 persons). Currently he’s serving as a member of the JPSO Reserve Division assigned to their IT Division. Milton has assisted with the organization and administration of the annual Trey Cullotta Invitational Wrestling Tournament since its inception in 2000.

He has been a member of the Alumni Board since 2006. He has been a member of the President’s Dinner Committee since its inception in 2006. Milton has served on the Board of Directors of the Congregation of St. Joseph People Program since 2014 (CSJ People Program is a non-profit organization which provides classes and activities for area senior citizens).

Benjamin Gootee ’01 - Ben earned his B.S. in Building Construction from Georgia Tech in 2005. Ben has been working for Gootee Construction, Inc. since 2006 and currently resides in Lakeview with his wife Ashley and two sons Thomas and Rhett. In the construction industry Ben participates in the following organizations: ASHRAE, MCAA, and the AGC of Louisiana. Ben is also a member of the Fore! Kids Foundation and enjoys playing golf at Metairie Country Club. Ben has served on the Alumni Board of Directors from 2010-2016 and has helped with the Alumni Seafood Dinners, Homecoming, Open House, and was on the founding committee for the Day at the Races. He also enjoys attending the Golden Crusader Lunches, President’s Dinners, and the Celebration of the Crest.

Jason Hijuelos, CPA, CVA, CGMA ’95 - Jason was a member of the cross-country team, academic games, and the yearbook staff during his time at Brother Martin prior to attending LSU where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 2000. Since that time, he has lived in New Orleans, Miami, Baton Rouge, and back in New Orleans, as there is indeed no place like home. In each stop along the way, he has remained active in attending and sponsoring local chapter events. For the past five years, he has been a senior manager with Hannis T. Bourgeois, LLP, where he provides audit, advisory, and valuation services to notfor-profit organizations and small businesses, and serves as a development adviser to staff and as a member of the firm’s marketing committee. Jason is a founding member and current vice president of the Louisiana chapter of the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA), a member of the career awareness committee of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants (LCPA), and a member of the finance professionals group of the Crimson and Gold Network. He has previously served as a member of the boards of directors of Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge and Forum 35, as the Baton Rouge representative on the LCPA’s Emerging CPA Council, and as a finance committee member of the Young Leadership Council of Greater New Orleans. He and his wife, Ann, a coastal ecologist with the United States Geological Survey, reside in Uptown New Orleans with what to the untrained eye may appear to be too many rescue pets.

Ben Lambert ’03 - Ben has served on the Alumni Board for the past two years. In addition to serving on the Alumni Board, he also serves on the Brother Martin Golf Tournament Committee and his class reunion committee. Ben has participated and helped during the AdvancedEd accreditation process for the school. He graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Economics. In 2010, Ben graduated from Loyola University of New Orleans College of Law, where he served as President of the Trial Advocacy Program. Ben is currently a Partner at Couch, Conville & Blitt, LCC, a regional law firm based in New Orleans, with offices in six states. He is also the Director of Legal Operations for the Firm. Ben is licensed to practice law in Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Victor A. Landry III ’86 - Vic has four sons, Colin - Class of 2016, Chase - Class of 2019, Christian - Class of 2023 and Carson. While at Brother Martin, Vic was a varsity swim team letterman. Vic’s father, Victor A. Landry, is a 1951 graduate of St. Aloysius, and his brother Scott (deceased) was a 1977 graduate of Brother Martin. Vic is the Vice President of the Brother Martin Parents Club, and will be President next year. He is an annual participant at Brother Martin Career Day, the Celebration of the Crest, the Alumni Seafood Dinner, Open House, the Golf Tournament, the Fishing Rodeo, Trivia Night, and frequently attends football, lacrosse and other sporting events. He served on the 30th reunion committee for the Class of 1986. After graduating from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1991, Vic began his professional career in architecture and engineering. Vic has worked for firms as a project manager both designing and overseeing large private and public sector projects. Vic is currently an Operations Project Manager at the US Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. Vic is married and has 4 sons. His wife, Beth, is also active at Brother Martin as a parent.

The Landry family resides in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the President of the Lakeshore Property Owners Association, and is active at the boys playgrounds. He is a parishoner of St. Dominic and active at Christian Brothers School.

Chad LaRose ’90 - Chad is a Golden Crusader and a David Marks Award recipient. He was named as All-State Quarterback 1988 & 1989 and was a track State Finalist 1987. Chad was part of Phase II of the Brother Martin

2018-2020 Nominees (continued) Capital Campaign; he has served on the Alumni Board from 2006-2008, 2012-present and serves as color analyst for Crusader Football broadcasts. He and his wife, Gina, have three children; Scarlett, Giselle and Jocelyn. They currently reside in Lakeview, New Orleans.

Johnny LeBourgeois ’73 - Johnny, son of Leo M., Sr. ’38 SA, and father to Christian ‘04, is a past Alumni Board member. He has organized the last eight “Class of ‘73” reunions and several other class gatherings, events and fund raisers (including quarterly “Lunch Bunch Meetings” - nearly 100 for the past 30 years).

Johnny is a founding member of the Class of ‘73 Culinary Squad and Class of ‘73 -First 4 Year Class Scholarship Fund Committee. Johnny is also the namesake of the Class’s Scholarship, “The Johnny LeBourgeois- Spirit of ‘73” Scholarship. Johnny and his wife, Kim, have co-chaired Cajunfest and he helped for several years as a “special volunteer” for the Cajunfest setup & tear down teams. He has been active in the wrestling program, and often seen at many other school and Alumni Events. Johnny has also served over the years on St. Clement of Rome’s Men’s Club as President, V.P. & Treasurer. He also served on the S.C.of R.’s School Board & Co-Op Club Board (Recipient of a “Clem” Award). He has retired from A.T.&T. after being in Telecommunications for over 38 years.

Jeff Maumus ’97 - After attending the University of New Orleans, Jeff served as an Executive Producer for WWL Radio and played an integral role in the continuous coverage before, during and after Hurricane Katrina.After leaving WWL, Jeff was the Operations Director for a local luxury transportation company and could also be heard daily on Sports Radio WIST with John Fourcade and Brian Allee-Walsh. Currently, Jeff is a Sales Executive for the Miner Corporation in New Orleans specializing in Commercial Doors and Hardware.

Jeff and his brother, James Maumus ’89 have sponsored and hosted the Brother Martin Trivia Nights since 2016.

Alex Migliore ‘14 - Alex is a proud Crusader who wants to uphold the value of a Brother Martin Degree.

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart education set a foundation for his success after graduation. He studied Marketing for two years at LSU and is graduating from the UNO School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism May 11th. He’ll still be down the street studying Hospitality Management with a focus on events and conventions.

He is an insurance agent for Mr. Bill Bubrig’s independent agency in Belle Chasse and worked at the Julia St. Terminal for Norwegian Cruise Line since 2012. He wants our alumni to succeed and our campus to grow to remind everyone we are the best high school in the state! He is am a proud member of the Golden Crusader Committee, American Hotel & Lodging Assoc, Louisiana Restaurant Assoc, Team National, Plaquemines Assoc of Business & Industry, and the Belle Chasse Rotary Club. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart education set a foundation for his success after graduation and is committed to continuing shielding the shield!

Darrell Mipro ’88 - Darrell was a pole vaulter and a 3-year letterman on the track team while at Brother Martin. He also was a member of the track team at the University of New Orleans while earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in Finance. Darrell was the captain of the 1980’s team for the Brother Martin Capital Campaign in 2000 and is also one of the founding members of the Crimson and Gold Network in 2007. Darrell has performed much community service as a Scout leader, a catechism teacher at St. Andrew the Apostle School, along with coaching softball, baseball and soccer for many years at Plantation Athletic Club. Current service includes being a member of the Finance committee for Dominican High School, a member of the Audit committee for United Way of Southeast Louisiana, the Treasurer/ board member for Lakewood Estates, and a section leader in the Krewe of Endymion. Darrell currently works at Whitney Bank, as a Group Controller performing budgeting, reporting, and analysis across various business units and currently resides in New Orleans with his wife, Lisa, and their two children, Bailey and Bryce, Class of 2021. He enjoys staying involved with Brother Martin through attendance of various sporting and alumni events and would like to further serve Brother Martin as a member of the Alumni Board.

Jeremy Mipro ‘03 - Jeremy is a native New Orleanian, who has a passion for the city and the communities that have given him so much. He received a degree in finance from LSU, and a MBA from UNO. With 9 years in the banking industry, he currently works for Wells Fargo, where he is responsible for the business development and management of corporate clients throughout Louisiana. Outside of work, he served as chapter president of the Risk Management Association New Orleans Chapter and remains on the board today. Other organizations Jeremy is active in: Fore! Kids Foundation, Young Leadership Council, Association for Finance Professionals, and Animal Rescue New Orleans. While at Brother Martin, he served as a Student Ambassador, Student Minister, and was a member of the soccer team. As an alumnus, he is active in the Crimson and Gold Network, speaks at Career Day, and with the help of others, started the CGN Finance Group.

He would be honored to serve on the board, and help further Brother Martin’s mission.

Casey Munson ’97 - Casey routinely volunteers at Brother Martin for a number of different events. He currently serves on the Brother Martin Golf Tournament Committee, Crusader Cook-Off Committee as well as the Alumni Board. He is an alumnus of Loyola University and he served as a member of the United States Coast Guard from 2001-2008. Currently, he is employed as Sales Representative for Ferguson Enterprises.

Brett Napier ‘03 - Brett is the Marketing Director for Deutsch Kerrigan, LLP, an insurance defense law firm with offices in New Orleans and Gulfport, and is responsible for all firm marketing and public relations efforts and attorney business development and market research strategy. Currently, Brett is serving as Co-Chair of the Legal Marketing Association New Orleans/Baton Rouge Chapter and VP of Events for the American Marketing Association New Orleans Chapter. During his time as a staff member in the Alumni Office, Brett served as the Web & Social Media Manager/Alumni & Development Assistant. He remains actively involved with Brother Martin as a member of the Cook-off Committee and the Beach Volleyball Club Team Coach.

Joey O’Connor III ‘85 - Joey is the owner of The O’Connor Insurance Group, LLC in Metairie, serving the Greater New Orleans area as a Property and Casualty Independent Insurance Agent. He has served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater New Orleans and will be inducted as PresidentElect in June of the Independent Insurance Agents of Louisiana. He has also served on National committees for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America. Joey has helped with previous Open Houses and has served on the alumni recruiting committee for new prospective Brother Martin students. He is a regular participant in the Alumni Dances and the Cook-off as participant and sponsor. He has also sponsored the Auction event in past years. He continues to remain active in the community by volunteering as a coach at a local Parochial School. He has served on Non profit boards in the past and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Krewe of Bacchus. Past awards include Outstanding Board Member for service

with Independent Insurance Agents of Louisiana and past recipient of Most Outstanding Young Man of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He graduated from LSU in 1990. Joey has been married to Tricia O’Connor for over 25 years and they have 2 children, Alayna and Ryan (Class of 2019).

David Pecot ’76 - David has been married to Jeanne for 33 years and he is the father of two daughters, Jeannette, 29 and Suzanne, 27. He works for a local oil company as a territory manager. In his spare time, he’s usually at Brother Martin. David is the 2016 Founder’s Medal recipient. He’s a member of the Alumni Board, he is Fishing Rodeo chairman, he is on the Seafood Dinner committee and he’s participated in the Crusader Cook off. He can be spotted at most Crusader sporting event, home or away games and every level.

He is currently an assistant coach for the Crusaders’ 8th grade team. He enjoys fishing and hunting!

Roy Perilloux ‘65 SA - Roy J. Perilloux, Esq. currently resides in the metro Jackson and Bay St. Louis, MS. areas. He graduated from St. Aloysius in 1965 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard before earning his undergraduate degree cum laude from Loyola University of the South. Roy earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson, Mississippi in 1983. He is a member of the LA. And MS. Bar Associations and licensed to practice in various state and federal courts in those jurisdictions. Roy “retired” from his law firm in 2012, and currently serves as the Mississippi State Manager and Underwriting Counsel for The Security Title Guarantee Corporation of Baltimore. In May, 2015 Roy was elected to the Board of Directors of Security Title, a position he continues to hold. He was named the Title Person of the Year for MS., AL., and GA. by the Dixie Land Title Association later that year. In January, 2017 Roy was named Vice President of Security Title of Baltimore. Roy has been married for 51 years to Bonnielyn Silva Perilloux. They have three children and four grandchildren.

Patrick Pritchett ’78 - Pat Pritchett is a graduate of the Brother Martin Class of 1978. After completing his college education at the University of New Orleans (1981), he worked locally until the mid-1980’s, at which time he moved to Northern Virginia and began a career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He retired from the CIA in 2012 after a 27-year distinguished career as a Technical Operations Officer and senior manager. Pat’s career included overseas assignments in Southeast Asia, Central America, and the Middle East. Following his CIA career, Pat worked for five years as a consultant and senior program manager for Draper Laboratory of Cambridge, MA. With Jean, his wife of 31 years and also retired CIA, Pat “really” retired in 2016 and returned to the Crescent City. Pat and Jean have three grown children and two grandchildren, and Pat now spends his time umpiring high school baseball and driving the train at New Orleans City Park.

Pat considers his four years at Brother Martin the greatest gift his parents could have given him, as those years laid a strong foundation for the professional and personal success he has enjoyed throughout his life.

As a result, he seeks election onto the BOSHAA Board of Directors to give back to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the Crusader community.

Louis J. Provenzano Jr. ’90 - Lou was born, raised and still resides in Metairie. He is the son of Iris and L.J. Provenzano ‘65 CJ. While attending Brother Martin he played offensive tackle for the 1989 AAAA State Runner-Up Football Team. He received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business from the University of New Orleans. While at U.N.O. he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. Lou has worked for Southern Eagle Sales and Service, a local beverage company, the past 20 years. He is currently a Senior Key Account Manager for Southern Eagle. Lou is married to Jennifer Doubleday Provenzano and they have two children, Simon, an 8th grader at Brother Martin and Brooke, a 5th grader at St. Christopher. He is a member of St. Christopher Men’s Club where he has held offices of President and Vice President. Lou currently coaches basketball and baseball at Cleary Playground and coached football for 8 years. Lou has been on several planning committees for Brother Martin class of ’90 reunions. He has participated in the Brother Martin Tailgate Cook-off and Homebrew competition, winning the homebrew competition a few years ago.

Jerrold Rabalais ’00 - Jerrold lives in Covington, LA with his wife Lauren, daughter Emma, and son Liam.

They have been married for 13 wonderful years, and have lived in Covington, LA since 2005. He is employed as a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones where his office is located in Madisonville. During his time at Brother Martin, he enjoyed many levels of involvement including Student Council VP, Student Ambassador Exec Board, Student Ministry, as well as, being named Golden Crusader. As a contributing member of the community, he has held positions at St. Peter Catholic School as Dad’s Club President, Madisonville Chamber of Commerce President, Keep Louisiana Beautiful Board Member for the Madisonville Chapter, and President of the local chapter of Business Networking International. Additionally, hereceived the Edward Jones Client Service Excellence award for the years 2015 and 2016, and is truly grateful for the relationships that he forged during his time thus far on the North shore. Given the opportunity, he wholeheartedly looks forward to continued support of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in the mission to form young people through holistic education and community involvement.

Jay Romig ’72 - Jay is an administrative director with the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans. He and his family have been very active in the Brother Martin community over the years. Jay is a Founders’ Medal recipient and received the Golden Crusader as a student. He has supported the Celebration of the Crest: Auction, the Fishing Rodeo, Golf Tournament, Crusader Cook-off and many other events. Jay served on the 2014-16 Alumni Board.

Brent Sandrock ‘01 - Brent Sandrock, a native of Metairie, LA, attended St. Ann school then Brother Martin High School before he began his studies at LSU. Upon graduating college he began working for Guy Hopkins Construction in Baton Rouge. Guy Hopkins, being a Catholic High grad, offered Brent an opportunity to join the commercial construction industry. After about a decade living in Baton Rouge, the call of family and friends in the New Orleans area became too great to ignore. Brent moved back home to Metairie and created Crescent Waterproofing and Restoration, a commercial and industrial building envelope and coatings company.

Don Schindler ’71 - Don is a ’71 graduate of Brother Martin having started at Cor Jesu. He earned a combined 5 varsity letters in football and track and at both Cor Jesu and Brother Martin. Following graduation he attended the University of Louisiana - Lafayette, formerly The University of Southwestern Louisiana where he received his undergraduate degree in biology. From there he went on to complete his professional degree from TWU School of Physical Therapy, Houston medical center campus. Don is a Physical Therapist having been practicing for 39 years. He is currently employed with Ochsner Health Systems

He has been a Louisiana Certified Athletic Trainer for nineteen years having covered the football programs for Redeemer-Seaton, Chalmette High, Hannan High, St.Bernard High, Brother Martin football and baseball and East Jefferson High. Don was a participating trainer during the US Olympic Trials held at Tad Gormley in 1992. He is married to Karen H. Schindler for 36 years. They have three children Blake, Elizabeth and Dane. Blake is a ’01 graduate and Dane ’07. Elizabeth is a former Crusader cheerleader. Blake was a member of two state champion soccer teams and a state cross country team while Dane played on successful Crusader soccer teams having reached the state semifinals and quarterfinals. Karen has been associated with the Brother Martin family having been a member of the Ladies of the Shield, worked the annual holiday home tour for 10 years, assisted with the open house, participated in various parent club events including the auction and spring fair and prom fest. Don is a former member of the alumni board. He spearheaded the formation of the letterman’s “M”club which was a predecessor to the present day alumni clubs. He also was involved in the planning and tribute for Bob Conlin. He was chosen by the Conlin family as a pall bearer for Coach Bob Conlin, which he embraces as an honor to this day. Don also has been a participant and sponsor in the annual golf tournament, a contributor to the yearly alumni letterman gathering at homecoming and a consistent participant in the Lenten retreat. The Schindler family are St. Dominic parishioners for 36 years. Don is a church usher and is a former member of the school board. He also is a current member of the Knights of Columbus where he is a serving officer. He is a member of the Krewe of Thoth carnival organization. “I would embrace the opportunity to serve on the alumni board once again and would appreciate your support. I have always said you may leave Brother Martin but Brother Martin never leaves you” Amateur Cor Jesu Kyle Sharbonno ‘99 - Kyle graduated Brother Martin in 1999, only 37 years after his father, Craig Sharbonno, did the same. Hopefully (though of course he gets to make his own decision!), his son will follow in our footsteps with the class of 2025! Following Brother Martin, he attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he received by B.S. in Industrial Engineering in 2004. After a brief stint with Johnson Controls after college, he has been with Ben Gootee at Gootee Construction, Inc. for the past 10.5 years currently serving as Vice President. He also went back to LSU for his MBA, which was completed in 2008. He and his wife currently live in Old Metairie. Their children, Jacob 10 and Madelynn 9, will be attending St. Angela of Merici in the Fall of 2018. He has been heavily involved with his children’s school. During their catholic school education, he was involved in a variety of ways: Athletic Committee, School Board, Men’s Club Board Member, Golf Committee Member, Fair Sponsor, Crawfish Cookoff Sponsor, just to name a few. Outside of school, he is an active member of both Metairie Country Club as well as The Krewe of Endymion.

He enjoys coaching his children’s teams at Pontiff Playground over the years. For the last five years, he has helped guide his son through the Pack 230 Cub Scout/Boy Scout program serving as Den Leader for his entire Cub Scout tenure. This has afforded him an opportunity to closely watch and assist his son advance through the Boy Scout of America path. It has been a blessing to stay so involved. Over the last few years, He attended the following Brother Martin events/organizations: Summer Camp (son), Extravaganza, Golf Tournament, Legacy Night and football games. He missed being heavily involved with Brother Martin, and as he slows down at the elementary level with his children, he has a desire to put his time and energy back into the Crusaders. He certainly looks forward to the opportunity to be of service to Brother Martin very soon.

Scott Shea ’81 - Scott is a Golden Crusader recipient. He is the father of two Brother Martin graduates, Mitchell ’10 and James ’14. He also is the parent of a current junior, Michael ’18. He has served as Co-Chair of the BM Parent Drive for the last four years. Scott has previously served on the Alumni Board and also served as President of the Alumni Board. He has been an attorney for 28 years and served on the Orleans Parish School Board and the New Orleans City Council.

Chuck Stall ’76 - Chuck and his wife Karen are the parents of 2002 Golden Crusader Chuck and 2007 Crimson Shield recipient William. Chuck is a member of the Brother Martin President’s Dinner Committee, Board Member SACF, Brother Martin Fishing Rodeo Committee and has served on the 2004 Celebration of the Crest Committee, and as past Parents Drive Area Leader. Chuck was 2011 Alumnus of the Year Ellender Award recipient, a 2-time recipient of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society “Outstanding Service Award” 1991, 1993. In 1996 he was the initial recipient of “Amarinys Liriano Contreras Memorial Award” presented by the University of New Orleans.

Pat Stant ’87 - Pat resides in Metairie and is married with three children, Hayley, Mt. Carmel class 2015, Jason, Brother Martin class 2018 and Olivia, future Mount Carmel class 2022. He is the President of McDonough Marine Service. While at Brother Martin he was a Golden Crusader, football letterman, senior captain, track letterman, senior captain, basketball letterman and Honors Diploma Graduate. He served on his class reunion committee and he is the Class of 2018 Parents drive committee rep.

Chris Stromboe ‘98 - Chris is a graduate of Brother Martin High School Class of 1998. He attended LSU and UNO and received a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Political Science. He worked in the Workers Compensation Insurance field for 14 years serving as a claims manager for Travelers Insurance and currently works for Coventry as an Account Sales Manager for Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. He also coached 8th grade football at Brother Martin for 3 years from 2013-2016. He also served as President of Eastbank little league from 2011-2013 and currently still volunteers and coaches multiple sports. He is a member of the Christian Brothers Men’s Club, The Christian Brothers Foundation, and a Race Director for the Brother Laurence Run N’ Shuck Oyster cup for 2017 and 2018. He resides in River Ridge with his wife, Katie, and three children, Cole (Brother Martin class of 2020), Klaire and Drew (future crusader class of 2029).

Keith Taranto ‘95 - Keith graduated with a Bachelors in Respiratory Therapy and a Masters in Healthcare Administration. He previously worked as a respiratory therapist at both Ochsner Health Systems and New Orleans VA Medical Center. He currently works as a Prosthetic Representative at the New Orleans VA Medical Center. At Brother Martin High School, he is on the Golf Tournament Committee as well as an individual sponsor of the Prayer Breakfast. He has also attended the Seafood Dinner and Prayer Breakfast. He is Vice-President of the Louisiana Pulmonary Disease Camp, Inc.-Camp Pelican, where he is also on the medical staff. He is an Advisory Board Member of S.M.C.L. Foundation (promotes adaptive sports and paralympic games for veterans and community), a graduate of the 2016 Emerging VA Leaders (EVAL) Program, and serves as Manager of the Individuals with Disabilities Special Emphasis program at the VA. He has been inducted to numerous undergraduate and graduate school honor societies. He looks forward to becoming more involved in the Brother Martin Alumni Association.

Michael Tusa ‘92 - Michael A. Tusa ‘92 received his B.S. in accounting from the University of New Orleans, J.D. from LSU’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center and LL.M. in taxation from Boston University. He is an attorney in Metairie where he focuses on estate planning, successions and family law matters. He served on the St. Louis King of France school board from 2009-2012 and served as Treasurer and Vice President of the SLKF men’s club from 2007-2013. His son William is in the class of 2023.

Scott Walker ’93 - Murrow and Emmy award-winner Scott Walker anchors WDSU News at 4, 5, 6 and 10 p.m. 2016 marks Scott’s 21st year covering news and sports in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Scott joined the WDSU news team in 2009 after anchoring morning and noon newscasts for nine years in Mobile and Orlando. In 2015 and 2016, Scott won an Emmy award, Edward R. Murrow award, National Headliner award and Gabriel award for his stories chronicling former Saint Steve Gleason’s battle with ALS. In 2014, Scott was named one of Gambit’s “40 Under 40”. Scott was named “Best News Anchor” by the Press Club of New Orleans in 2012 and 2013 and earned first place honors from the Press Club and Gambit Weekly for his social media presence in 2012, ’13, ’14 and ’15. Since returning home, Scott has had a front row seat for numerous big events, including the Saints magical run to Super Bowl XLIV and the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. During WDSU’s extensive oil spill coverage, Scott made local and national headlines after his confrontation with private security guards trying to limit media access on Grand Isle beach. Prior to WDSU, Scott worked at WESH-TV in Orlando, Florida; WPMI-TV in Mobile, Alabama; WXXV-TV in Gulfport, Mississippi; WLBT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi; and WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Scott is married, has two boys and resides in Old Metairie. At Brother Martin Scott initiated and led the effort to raise $25,000 for the commissioned Terrance Osborne piece that currently hangs outside the auditorium. He has participated in Career Day nearly every year since 2009, he’s spoken to the senior class about smart social media use and he has been involved in a number of food-related events at the school, usually as a judge, at the Crusader Cook-Off. Scott was Drama Club president, worked on the yearbook staff, was cut from basketball tryouts four times, and drove Brother Henry crazy in Spanish class.

Bespectacled lefty Butch McCollum, who had beaten the Crusaders in Game One the year before, gave up only six hits but walked six. Lacoste had a perfect day at the plate with a single and three walks. Schroder went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Powell clouted a home run while Bouche tripled with the bases loaded in the fateful 3rd. Thus did St. Aloysius win its fourth state baseball championship in the last seven years.

But the season wasn’t over. The Crusaders still had to beat De La Salle to win the sec-ond round and avoid a playoff for the league championship. Folse came back on three days rest to hold the Cavs to five hits. Aloysius jumped on Harwell, their first-round tor-mentor, for four runs in the first two innings on their way to a 6-1 lead after four. The final score was 8-3. Aloysius’s 11 hits were

all singles. Lacoste, Catanese, and Boullosa had two each, Joe driving in four runs with his.

To no one’s surprise, Folse was voted the league MVP. He went 7-0 on the mound and hit .474 in league play. LaCoste (.392), Boullosa (.386), and Powell (.339) made the All-Prep team, Butler occupying the Utility Man spot.

Lavie also coached Aloysius’s Coca-Cola Legion baseball team to the league champi-onship with a 16-0 record. They beat Lousteau Ford of Norco in three games for the South Louisiana Championship, then took two straight from Bastrop for the state crown. Their victorious march continued at the Regional Tournament in Ponchatoula, where they beat Amarillo (TX) in the finals. But their quest for a berth in the Legion World Series ended at the hands of Salisbury NC, which lost the first game but bounced back to win the next two.

In Memoriam

Thomas M. Benson, Jr. ’44 Mr. Tom Benson, a recipient of the 1986 Senator J. Ellender Alumnus of the Year Award, passed away peacefully on March 15th at the age of 90 years old with his wife, Gayle Marie Benson, at his side. Mr. Benson was the owner of both the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans. He was widely recognized as one of the NFL’s most successful and influential leaders in his 34th year in ownership of the Saints and has helped steward both on-and-off the court improvement with the Pelicans since purchasing the club in 2012. Under his leadership, the teams are two of the leading economic forces in the entire region.

Since 2006, the Saints have enjoyed unprecedented success, posting a 119-85 overall record, including six playoff berths, four NFC South titles, two NFC Championship appearances and the Super Bowl XLIV title. New Orleans has hosted five Super Bowls with Mr. Benson serving as the leading advocate of the city’s campaigns to secure the NFL’s title game and its accompanying activities. In five years of ownership of the Pelicans, the city has hosted two NBA All-Star Weekends (2014 and 2017). In honor of his dedication to the region and its two major league sports franchises, he is a member of both the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame. He is also the owner of several automotive dealerships, Dixie Beer and the Benson Tower office building.

In his early life, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota in 1945 and was the only enlisted man ever to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Pensacola Naval Museum. In 2007, he was honored by the U.S. Navy Memorial with the Lone Sailor Award, presented to those who exemplify the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. In January 2009, a replica of his Lone Sailor Award was permanently put on display aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, the last of the Nimitz-class carriers to be commissioned. A major contributor and past director of the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans with his pledges helping fund the Pacific Exhibit grand opening and the Midway Theater, Mr. Benson was one of five NFL owners honored with an American Spirit Award by the museum in 2011 for service in the war.

His steadfast loyalty to the civic and Catholic communities is well-known. Through the years, Mr. Benson has significantly been involved in the advancement of Brother Martin High School. In 1985, he and his brothers established the Benson Free Enterprise Resource Library at Brother Martin in honor of their parents, Tom and Carmen Benson. During the school’s 1995 Capital Campaign, it was through Mr. Benson’s initiative that the St. Aloysius Class of 1944 funded the building of the auxiliary gymnasium. In 2013, Mr. Benson and his wife, the former Gayle Marie LaJaunie, established the Brother Nicholas Geisenberg, S.C. Building Endowment. To honor their gift, Brother Martin named the student mall, the Gayle and Tom Benson Mall. In 2012, the Bensons received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award – for outstanding service to the Church and the Pontiff from Pope Benedict XVI, the highest Papal award granted to a layperson.
