OLD FRIENDS AND NEW PORTS
It took Phileas Fogg 80 hair-raising days to venture around the world. You can make a little history of your own on board Aurora in, thank goodness, more relaxing style. This promises to be a remarkable cruise. In 2017 it will be 180 years since the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was formed, with a government contract to run a weekly mail service to the Iberian Peninsula. To celebrate, we’ve created a special heritage-themed itinerary taking in many fascinating ports that have played their part in the P&O story, together with some new ones that we hope will become future classics. On this east-bound circumnavigation, echoing the mail routes of the 19th century, you will cruise into some of the world’s most beautiful and diverse cities. Explore ancient sites, soak up some beach life and experience the thrills of the Americas, before relaxing in the Caribbean on your journey home. Feeling tempted? Read on for a little taster…

Singapore is just one of the many highlights, and with an overnight stay here you can embrace its energy and sights wholeheartedly. Services extended to this iconic port in 1845 and today, it’s more exciting than ever. Besides its reputation for being safe and spotless, the city offers up a fascinating mix of Western consumerism and Eastern tradition, topped Aurora’s World Circumnavigation
We’ll be in festive mood as Aurora takes in historic wonders of the world, from the city of Petra to the Panama Canal. And don’t forget your pioneering spirit as we visit iconic ports of call.

Around the world with Aurora

DON’T MISS THE WORLD’S LARGEST BUDDHIST MONUMENT AT BOROBUDUR, A BREATHTAKING TEMPLE COMPLEX BUILT BETWEEN 778 AND 856 THEN MYSTERIOUSLY ABANDONED BEFORE THE ASH OF A NEARBY VOLCANO HID ITS GLORIES UNTIL 1814.
Petra Borobudur (tours from Semarang) Melbourne off with a dash of colonial glamour (beautifully captured by the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel). As the sun dips in the sky, the darkness paves the way for even more discovery. You might opt for a Night Safari; a chance to see nocturnal animals after dusk as you travel seven different geographical habitats by guided tram, or catch the dancing lights, music and colour of Marina Bay Sands Light and Water Show.
Semarang in Indonesia is a brand-new port of call for the fleet and we think you’ll be as impressed as we are by the city where size matters.
Central Java is also the perfect spot to pick up beautiful silverware and batik cloth so pack with a little room to spare.

WILDLIFE SPOTTING, CAFÉ CULTURE AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN Cameras at the ready. Thanks to the fact that Kangaroo Island has no foxes or rabbits, it is teeming with all the Australian fauna you could wish for. Yes, there are kangaroos on this huge island off the south Australian coast, and they’re a unique kind – a smaller, darker, long-haired sub-species of the western grey kangaroo found on the mainland. Look out for koalas, wallabies and seals (all of whom will be producing their young at this time), plus wombats, echidnas (a type of spiny ant eater), all manner of birds and, marine emblem of the South Australian state, the rare leafy seadragon.
Next stop: cosmopolitan Melbourne. Famous for being the location of long-running soap opera Neighbours, it is in fact one of the great cities of the Victorian era – P&O started sailing here at the height of the 1850s Gold Rush. Now a cultural hub, with a fabulous coffee-shop scene for regular pit stops, we recommend a central walking tour and tram ride for the best overview. Standing proud among the modern skyscrapers, the Gothic Bank, the Old Melbourne Stock Exchange and the Royal Arcade are just three impressive testaments to this city’s prosperity. Nature lovers should venture beyond the city limits to Sherbrooke Forest with its tall hardwoods and exquisite birdlife and Mount Dandenong Observatory, set amid lush forests and fern gullies. Look out for crafts, notably pottery and wood carvings, at local villages.

of architecture is charming to explore. The Old Government Building from 1876 is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Old St Paul’s Cathedral, built 10 years earlier, has a native timber interior and magnificent stained glass windows in the European style. Situated along the waterfront, Te Papa Tongarewa is an awe-inspiring modern museum dedicated to New Zealand’s past, present and future. Experience a Maori meeting house or shake it up with the earthquake simulator. Auckland sits prettily on a sliver of land between two harbours. Nicknamed ‘The City of Sails’, it boasts the world’s highest ownership of recreational boats and all that calming water gives this city a laid-back atmosphere. Dotted about the area are 50 volcanoes, providing islands of green amidst the Victorian suburbs, colonial-style shops of Parnell village and the restaurants and boutiques of downtown. Journey beyond the city to fertile farming and wine regions then on to the wild clifftops of Muriwai to marvel at one of the largest mainland gannet colonies in the world – watching these seabirds dive for fish is quite spectacular. With a relaxing evening in port, find yourself a waterside perch (it’s early autumn so it shouldn’t be too chilly) and watch all those boats bobbing in the bay before returning to your own floating home-from-home.

FROM FIJI THROUGH TO SOUTH AMERICA In the 1930s P&O started cruising to the exotic islands of the Pacific. Lautoka, Fiji’s main cruise port, is steeped in the history of the timber and sugar industries and is a fascinating place. Get a real taste of Fijian life at the bustling daily market. And don’t be surprised to see mosques and ornate Sikh and Krishna temples, too – the large Indian population here adds to the city’s diverse hustle, bustle and tasty Travellingcuisine.through the great Panama Canal is an experience like no other. It takes nine hours (the alternative is a treacherous 12,500km voyage around Cape Horn that would take weeks) and we guarantee you will not tire of the sights and sounds that abound as Aurora transits through this amazing feat of civil engineering. Linking the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic, the Canal travels 80km from Panama City in the South to Colon in the North, encompassing a series of locks that deal with the 85 foot height difference between the two bodies of water. Along sections of the two narrow shipping lanes (you may even get to road-test the new third, wider lane if it is completed), are vast tracts of virgin jungle. Listen out for the screeching of parrots and monkeys as you make your stately progress. More bird species can be found in Colombia than in Europe and North America combined. You should be able to spot a few beauties (cattle tyrant, eared dove, yellow-headed caracara, brown-throated parakeet) in the pretty plazas of Colombia’s exquisite fifth city, Cartagena, without trying too hard. This just adds to the charm of the place.
On to Wellington, New Zealand. And, wow, what a setting! Drive up to Mount Victoria, 643 feet above sea level, to take in the panoramic sweep of the harbour and city with the rugged, seal-populated coastline beyond. Or put your head for heights on to visit OtariWilton’s Bush forest reserve with a treetop canopy Wellington’swalkway.mishmash

If you’re seeking the very pinnacle of world travel, what could surpass sailing on a classic ship, with Britain’s most long-lived cruise line, in a landmark year? Welcome to Aurora’s 2017 World Circumnavigation, inspired by the east-about routes sailed by our forefathers.
And while you’re in the mood for time travelling, how about a glimpse of your future? Your voyage will (of course) start with just the right amount of pomp and ceremony. And from your vantage point on deck, the excitement is palpable! A thousand flags are being held aloft, fluttering in the breeze, and the sound of the quayside marching band fills the air. Your voyage will undoubtedly spawn a million memories and stories, and to these we’ll add an extra layer of discovery and context through talks about the significance of the places you’ll visit. And as you stroll the decks, you’ll be following in the footsteps of P&O’s pioneers and illustrious passengers from Maharajas to migrants and missionaries, each with a story to tell. From the Victorian age of steam, innovation and empire, through two World Wars, to a brave Elizabethan era of modernity and change, P&O has played a vital part in maritime history. And your journey is shaped by it all. As we sail on the ‘Eastern Highway’ you’ll hear all about P&O’s part in the dramatic evacuation of women and children during the fall of Singapore in World War II, the arrival of the 10 Pound Poms in Australia, and find out how it came to be that so many of our fabulous and hardworking crew come from Mumbai. What a way to kick off the New Year! Take down the tinsel and within 10 days of setting sail from Southampton you’ll be kicking back in Barbados, watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean. And that’s just the start of your magical four-month adventure. Whether you get your thrills from splashing about in the South Pacific or watching elephants splash each other in Sri Lanka, this trip will be filled with those moments that you’ll be talking about for years to come, such as when Arcadia cruises into the Bay of San Francisco under its iconic Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco is alive with so many familiar landmarks and scenes. With an overnight stay in port there’s plenty of time to experience the 130-year-old tram system and those famous vertiginous streets – check out Lombard Street on Russian Hill with its eight hairpin turns. Since the 60s, the city has celebrated its hippies and peacenik counterculture, but the unmissable Alcatraz, home to notorious prisoners Robert ‘The Birdman’ Stroud and Al Capone, strikes a different note. Pop on your headphones for the award-winning audio tour that brings this former island federal penitentiary to life through the voices of former inmates and guards. And if you fancy yourself as a bit of a wine buff, (or just love a good glass) don’t miss the excursion to the lush Napa Valley, where you can visit top wineries and enjoy tastings with the experts.

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? This cruise has it all, from sun-soaked beaches and breathtaking natural wonders, to ancient culture and sophisticated city life.
Here’s just a taste of what’s to come…
Circumnavigate the globe with Arcadia

Petra TROPICAL HAWAII AND BORA BORA Volcanoes, palm trees and glorious sunshine. Well, aloha, you’ve arrived in Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii. You could simply throw on a flower garland, order a Blue Hawaii (light rum, blue curaçao, pineapple juice) and wiggle your toes in the soft warm sand all day, but there’s much to see. If you’re not ready for the beach just yet, check out the marine life 100 feet beneath the waves in an Atlantis submarine, or board a helicopter for a whirlwind tour of the glittering coastline, finishing up with an unrivalled view of Pearl Harbor. Another favourite excursion is the scenic drive over the Ko’olau Mountains to Oahu’s North Shore and the famous surfer hotspot Sunset Beach. If you’re lucky, you might even spot rare green sea turtles on Turtle Beach. He wasn’t wrong. This island delivers everything you require of a tropical paradise – jagged volcanic peaks (happily extinct), friendly coconut palmfringed villages, and impossibly blue waters where tropical fish flit between the coral and anemones.
Bora Bora is surrounded by a lagoon and barrier reef so most activities are water based. Fancy swimming with stingrays and black-tipped sharks? If the very idea gives you goose bumps, enjoy a glass-bottomed boat ride instead.
WHEN EXPLORER JAMES COOK MAPPED MOST OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC IN THE 18TH CENTURY, HE CALLED BORA BORA IN FRENCH POLYNESIA THE ‘PEARL OF THE PACIFIC’.

FROM OPERA HOUSES TO GOLDEN TEMPLES Sydney Opera House, fanning out across Sydney Harbour like a majestic rig in full sail, is a sight to behold. You can experience this expressionist wonder from the inside, too, if you opt for a shore excursion to see one of the spectacular productions here. No sitting in the Gods for you, either, as you’ll have reserved ‘A’ seats. If you’ve got a good head for heights, try an alternative view by climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where a qualified guide will lead you through steel catwalks to the summit. From your unique vantage point you’ll see, 400 feet beneath you, the largest natural harbour in the world and hundreds of bays, dotted with islands and surrounded by national parks. For the perfect combination of urban grandeur and natural beauty, Sydney has it all: great culture, amazing food and a relaxed vibe. Bondi Beach is a real eye-opener, where surfer dudes, billionaires and bikini-clad babes all jostle for towel space. A change of pace, and it’s time for a lesson in serenity, tea drinking and kimono wearing in Osaka, Japan’s third largest city. Although Busan Bora Bora

GO LARGE IN BUSAN AND HONG KONG
AdventureAsian&PolynesianArcadia’s
You may not have heard of Busan before, but once experienced it’s never forgotten. In South Korea’s biggest city after Seoul, everything is on a grand scale. It boasts the world’s largest department store, the largest fish market AND the largest beach in South Korea. If these epic experiences get overwhelming, seek tranquility in one of Busan’s many temples. Cross over a mountain stream to reach Beomeosa Temple, set in a wisteria-covered valley. Unusually, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, devoted to the Buddha Goddess of Mercy, is situated near the sea and involves a memorable drive along a 4½-mile long bridge. On to Hong Kong, which at first glance works to a dynamic pace of its own. But did you know about three quarters of its land is composed of country parks, woodland and coastline? You can choose your own speed here. When you’re ready, up the tempo with a stroll along the Avenue of Stars, with its life-sized statue of Bruce Lee, or a visit to the Temple Street night market, fabulous for cheap CDs, electronic goods and luggage. For a more traditional experience, cruise Victoria Harbour aboard a Chinese junk, or visit the Aberdeen Fishing village on a sampan, home to hundreds of water people, before feasting on a dim sum lunch at the exclusive Aberdeen Marina Club.
A TALE OF TWO CITIES You’re getting closer to home but every day still brings new cultures and different ways of living. Khor al Fakkan is a bustling port in the emirate of Sharjah, which was named in 1998 as UNESCO’s ‘Arab capital of culture’. The lovely white-sand beaches with the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop offer a welcome chance to take a dip or snorkel amid its coral outcrops, although cover up ladies and gents – this is a very conservative emirate, so Western-style bathing suits are not allowed on the Lastbeaches.butnotleast, let yourself succumb to the magic of Istanbul. The best way to appreciate its ravishing skyline is from the water, so take the opportunity to go on a Bosphorus cruise to view the minarets and grand palaces of this 3,000-year-old city on both its Asian and European shores. Primarily known for its Byzantine and Ottoman architecture (the famous Blue Mosque incorporates both influences), you can also trace in Istanbul’s buildings and ruins clues to its Genoese and Roman past. The Grand Bazaar with its intoxicating sights, sounds and smells has got to be high on your list of ‘must-sees’. The narrow alleys are organised depending on what they sell – will you go for jewellery, leatherware or carpets? Haggling is not only acceptable it’s expected, so don’t be shy. You could bag a bargain and furnish your cabin in style for the last leg of your trip! For a smaller but tasty memento, try the centuriesold Spice Bazaar, the best place to buy authentic Turkish Delight in a range of jewel-like colours and flavours. Hong Kong

Standouts are Kyoto’s Kinkakuji Temple or Golden Pavilion, three stories high and covered in pure gold leaf. Don’t forget to take a picture of the gleaming exterior reflected in the tranquil pond. In Nara, the giant Buddha at the Todaiji Temple and the 2,000 stone lanterns leading the way through the Torii Gate to the Kasuga Taisha Shrine are breathtaking.

The SunShine STaTe Fort Lauderdale, Florida is your first US port of call, and it’s everything you could hope for from the Sunshine State. The golden beaches are fringed with palms, smart yachts bob in the harbours and the pace is easy. Stroll the lively waterfront or hop aboard a replica 19th-century riverboat to marvel at the millionaires’ mansions that line the Venice-like waterways. You have two full days in port to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere before heading down to Key West, the southernmost of the Florida Keys and former home to author Ernest Hemingway, whose gorgeous Spanish Colonial-style home is now a museum. If anything, Key West is even more laid back than Fort Lauderdale, despite its fascinating history peppered with adventurers, wreckers, Civil War heroes and cigar magnates. History buffs will enjoy visiting the Little White House, winter retreat of President Truman and a base for John F Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The opulent architecture of Manaus, rising from virgin jungle miles from any other major city, hints at its decadent past as a boomtown. Built on the wealth generated by the production of rubber during the late 19th century, the city’s power declined when the seeds of the rubber tree were smuggled out of the Amazon region and the rubber barons lost their monopoly. The city’s standout landmark is its magnificent opera house, made with materials shipped in from all around Europe at vast expense, including Murano glass chandeliers from Venice.

This fascinating city sits at the very heart of the Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest. All around you is unparalleled biodiversity –discover a fraction of it for yourself with a riverboat ride down the Rio Negro or a rainforest walk complete with a lesson in jungle survival.
The mighty Amazon River runs for 4,000 miles through seven South American countries – and not a bridge in sight! This is because most of it passes through sparsely habituated rainforest. Measured by discharge of water it is the largest river in the world, greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined.

Welcome to life through rose-tinted sunglasses! Bermuda is steeped in history but you may struggle to leave the ravishing pink-sand beaches and turquoise waters beyond. View some of its famous shipwrecks with a snorkel or dive or, if you want to stay dry, enjoy the sunken treasures from a glassbottomed boat ride.
The French Quarter is the heartbeat of New Orleans. Its graceful 18th century architecture is actually more Spanish than French, but either way there is a distinct European and bohemian atmosphere here. Meet some of its diverse cast of characters and discover its lively cultural life on foot, or hop aboard a historic red streetcar to take in the sights. Southampton Ponta Delgada Progreso
