ON THE GO

EXPLORING

YOUR CITY GO TO THE LOCAL MUSEUM Most towns have museums of some kind that catalog the history of the city or some industry or happening in the city, or even some quirky feature about the city, such the UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico. You can also look up the buildings in your city that are on the National Register of Historic Places and do a little architectural tour around town. SEE A SHOW Whether it’s community theater or a professional performance, see what live performances are happening in your community. During the summer, cities often host concerts in the park, which is a great way to hear live music with the whole family.

26

|

SUDDENLY SUMMER 2018

It’s human nature: we rarely explore what’s in our own backyards. A staycation is the perfect chance to be a tourist in your own city or region. CHEER ON YOUR LOCAL SPORTS TEAM Have a minor league sports team in the area? Get tickets and go see them play. Minor league baseball games are a great time to throw out a blanket, spend time with your friends or children, eat stadium food and watch the action. FESTIVALS, PARADES & SPECIAL EVENTS A lot of cities have a Fourth of July parade or fireworks or a festival celebrating the city’s founding; festivals in particular are often weekend-long affairs with food, vendors, games and other fun ways to wile away a day or two. County and state fairs also offer a great opportunity to eat food you’d never eat when you’re not on vacation and see events like rodeos, demolition derbies and concerts.

HOBBIES

PHOTOGRAPH

NATURE

As the warm temperatures makes its appearance, so does the flora and fauna that disappeared during the cold. Documenting the beauty is a great way to create lasting memories and capture amazing moments to share. DON’T BE OVERWHELMED BY GEAR If you’re only considering stepping into the world of photography, you are probably confused about the gear you need for a successful shoot. While some of the equipment you may come across can be expensive, it’s best to start small while you perfect your craft. Remember, nature photography takes patience and you may spend hours outside chasing the perfect shot.

THINGS TO CONSIDER Are you mainly interested in taking pictures of wildlife or beautiful scenery in nature? Experts at your local camera shop can advise you on the perfect lens for any shooting situation. A suitable backpack is also important for a fun day on the trails. You’ll need plenty of room to store your equipment. Also, a good pair of hiking shoes can lessen the strain on your feet and back.

34

|

SUDDENLY SUMMER 2018

TAKE A LESSON A lesson or two will allow you to discover functions of your camera you wouldn’t have noticed on your own, what lens to use and how to shoot in different lighting situations. Don’t be surprised when you find how much you enjoy photographing nature. Spending time in the great outdoors and witnessing candid moments from amazing creatures can be humbling.

OLD FASHIONED FUN

STARGAZING IN THE

SUMMER

Relaxing on a summer evening to stare in wonder at the universe above us is a tradition many families enjoy. The background of shooting stars and beautiful constellations will lead to lifelong memories for everyone. Stars are not the only thing you’ll notice during a summer stargaze. In fact, NASA says you can easily notice several satellites as they pass overhead. The International Space Station and flare-ups of a passing Iridium satellite are the most noticeable. GAZING TIPS Bring a blanket and extra clothes: Bring along an extra set of clothing and a blanket to wrap yourself up in or to lie on and enjoy the view overhead. Bring bug spray: Make sure you have enough repellent for everyone in your group. Plan for rain: Don’t let the water

ruin your fun or equipment. Plan to bring along plenty of rain-repelling clothing and protection for your stargazing tools.

on the legends of the star patterns to impress your gazing partners and teach children about the stories behind the constellations.

DON’T BLINK You don’t necessarily need expensive equipment to enjoy a night of stargazing. Especially if you’re new to the hobby, it’s best to gauge your interest by watching the sky with your naked eye. Learn how to find popular constellations like the Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Scorpius and the Summer Triangle. You will also be dazzled by shooting stars and meteor showers. Educate yourself

DEEP-SPACE ATTRACTIONS If you have a pair of binoculars or a telescope handy, they can show you parts of space that aren’t visible to the naked eye. NASA recommends looking for great globular clusters in Hercules and Scorpius, the elusive Veil Nebula and the Ring Nebula. Whether you choose to stargaze in your own backyard or travel to a desolate location, you will be treated to a rewarding experience.

OPEN FLAME

GRILLING TECHNIQUES Just like some people insist that charcoal grills trump gas grills or vice versa, some backyard barbecue devotees swear by particular grilling techniques.

52

|

SMOKING Smoking involves cooking foods in closed chambers at low temperatures. Smoking is not the quickest way to whip up a meal, as the low temperatures require foods be cooked for longer periods of time.

INDIRECT GRILLING In this method, foods are placed in a chamber away from the heat source before the lid is closed. The lid will remain closed while the food cooks, which can take a long time.

SPIT ROASTING Food placed in a chamber with a rotating, often motorized spit. Indirect heat is used to cook the foods placed on the spit or skewer. Often a go-to method for cooking whole birds or ribs.

PLANK GRILLING Popular among people who like to grill fish, plank grilling involves putting food on top of a plank of wood and then placing the plank over a direct heat source. The plank itself can add its own unique flavor.

SUDDENLY SUMMER 2018

FRESH AIR

OUTDOOR

RECREATION The weather is warm, the days are long, flowers are blooming and it’s a great time to be outside. No matter how familiar you are with your city, it’s always fun to explore it on foot or by bike or spending a day or two at a nearby state park. EXPLORE ON A BIKE No matter how well you know your city, it always looks different on two wheels. You can spend a day on your bike, either mountain biking along the trails nearby or biking on roads or urban trails. You can bring a lunch and go all day or keep it short and relaxing. Always wear a helmet when biking. If you want to try something new, look into renting a tandem bike. GO HIKING There are national and state parks with a couple hundred miles of many Americans, and a staycation is a good opportunity to explore a

new park. But if you don’t want to go that far, the same trails that make for good biking are good for hiking too. Find a wilderness park in your city or check out trails just outside the city limits, put on hiking boots or solid tennis shoes, pack water, put on sunscreen and go for walk. EXPLORE THE CITY ON FOOT There’s nothing like walking among the shops and restaurants in a city’s downtown, soaking in the sights, sounds and smells of city life. Enjoy a leisurely hour at an outdoor table at a café, go window shopping (or regular shopping) in stores that you may not always get to.

Tips for a Safe & Fun Day Outside: • Wear sunscreen and a hat. • If you’re hiking or biking or doing other strenuous activity, make sure to bring enough water and snacks – including for your dog if you take it hiking. • Rest as needed. This is especially true when you’re working hard, but on a hot enough day even strolling the streets can take its toll. • Wear shoes that are appropriate for the activity.
