Capture the spirit of the season and discover “The Secret Life of Santa” at the 21st Annual Festival of Lights in Downtown Brookings. Start the evening online with a Virtual Festival of Trees. Decorate a tree, snap a picture and send to the Brookings Arts Council to be voted on by the community. Enjoy pre-parade fun at Hitch Studio and share your wish list with Santa in the North Pole, from 4-8pm. The fun continues from with free play, $2 cookie decorating and a hot chocolate bar, from 5-7pm at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Once you’ve consumed enough sugar, relax on a horse drawn trolley and experience the Central Residential Historic District, rides go from 5-7. Cap off the evening on Main Avenue at the Parade of Lights, brought to you by the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Brookings! Watch dazzling lights, listen to holiday tunes and learn what our local businesses think Santa does when he’s not busy preparing for the holiday season. February 17-19, 2017 The 3rd Annual Frost Fest is back for another weekend of chills, thrills and hot cocoa! Brookings area attractions are prepping for a multi-day festival to encourage locals and visitors to “Embrace the Chill.” Bring the family and enjoy all the great amenities the winter weather provides, as well as experiencing Brookings attractions and all they offer year-round. Itâ€™s easy to forget that shopping local helps your community and state in many ways. From tax dollars to supporting mom-and-pop businesses, there are many benefits.

Itâ€™s better for the community

A study by a professor at Baylor University found strong positive relationships between local ownership, firm size and employee loyalty, which they refer to as organizational commitment. Using data from a nationally representative public opinion survey, the study found that 57.2 percent of small firm workers scored in the highest commitment category, compared to 40.5 percent of large firm workers.

Christmas festivals: There may not be one in your town, but if not, it stands to reason there’s probably one nearby. In November and December, small and mid-size towns across the country host downtown Christmas festivals, with local stores and organizations participating to encourage folks to shop and spend some time outside the big box stores.

Look for deals

Most shops offer deals or coupons as part of a Christmas festival event, and it’s a great time to get some shopping done while taking advantage of the sales. With so much foot traffic hitting the area at one time, shops are usually fighting it out for attention — which is good news for shoppers. Also check with the local Chamber of Commerce to see if there might be a local coupon book for an event.

Make memories

Along with getting some shopping done, these festivals often also feature caroling, Christmas tree decorating contests, and sometimes even horse-drawn carriage rides. If the weather cooperates, it can be a great way to get into the Christmas spirit and have a fun and affordable night out. Be sure to see if there’s a schedule available for live music and events, so you can plan accordingly.

Homemade Cookies

This Christmas, start your own family tradition by baking cookies for yourself and those around you.

Sugar Cookies Ingredients

• 3 cups all-purpose flour • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt * Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside. Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg and milk and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, and beat until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl. Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate for 2 hours. * Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Sprinkle surface where you will roll out dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough at a time from refrigerator, sprinkle rolling pin with powdered sugar and roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Move the dough around and check

• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened • 1 cup sugar • 1 egg, beaten • 1 tablespoon milk • Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough

underneath frequently to make sure it is not sticking. If dough has warmed during rolling, place cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill. * Cut into desired shapes, place at least 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat and bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes after removal from oven and then move to complete cooling on wire rack. Serve as is or ice as desired. Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.
