Redefining travel since 1898

ORIGIN
Founded in the historic city of Cologne, Germany, in 1898, Rimowa stands as a paragon of luxury luggage craftsmanship. The brand was initially established under the name Görtz & Morszeck by founders Paul Morszeck and Heinrich Görtz. The company quickly distinguished itself as a purveyor of durable, highquality luggage, renowned for its robust wooden cases that combined exceptional stability with lightweight design. By 1900, Paul Morszeck had taken the helm as the sole director, steering the company into a new era of innovation and excellence.
The year 1931 marked a pivotal
moment for the brand, as Paul’s son, Richard Morszeck, joined the company and introduced the now iconic trademark, Rimowa. The name “Rimowa” itself is a homage
to its founder, being an acronym derived from Richard Morszeck Warenzeichen, with ‘Warenzeichen’ meaning ‘trademark’ in German. This
new identity signified a fresh vision and a commitment to craftsmanship that has since defined the brand’s ethos.
In the 1930s, a transformative event reshaped the future of Rimowa. The company’s original manufacturing of steamer trunks, instrumental cases, and suitcases for the discerning traveler was abruptly halted by a devastating factory fire, which consumed nearly all materials except for aluminum. Seizing this as an opportunity, Rimowa pivoted to crafting metal cases and, in 1937, introduced the world to the very first aluminum trunk.
CURVES
The year 1950 marked another milestone in Rimowa’s history with the debut of the iconic suitcase design featuring parallel grooves. This design was inspired by the golden age of aviation, particularly the legendary Junkers F13 aircraft. Initially, these grooves were engineered to stabilize the thin sheets of aluminum used in the suitcase’s construction. However, over time, they evolved into the quintessential hallmark of Rimowa’s distinctive aesthetic, symbolizing both innovation and elegance in luxury travel.
With the same ingenuity and courage as his father and grandfather, third generation owner Dieter Morszeck paved the way for RIMOWA’s global success. Thanks to his focus on state-of-the-art technology, uncompromising quality and timeless design, RIMOWA suitcases have become the global companion of choice for a sophisticated clientele.
