Industry Addresses Commitment to People, Pigs and the Planet

According to Checkoff-funded research, animal welfare and responsible environmental practices are top of mind for consumers.1 This includes assurance that farmers are committed to prioritizing animal well-being, reducing their environmental footprint and contributing to the well-being of their communities.

NPB Announces Goals and Metrics

The industry has an action-based and scientific approach to set benchmarks for where the pork industry is today and creates goals for how it will continue to improve in the future. Progress will be measured on the farm and across the industry using tools to make better, data-driven decisions. Visit porkcares.org to view the 2021 Industry Sustainability Report.

Request an On Farm Sustainability Report

For decades, pork producers have been at the forefront of sustainability, embracing advancements that allow them to do more with less. The next step is to document this progress.

To help, Checkoff-funded On-Farm Sustainability Reports highlight continuous improvement efforts available to all producers. The results will be anonymously aggregated for state and national reports.

These confidential, on-farm reports offer immediate value to pig farmers, who own the report data. Current onfarm report participants used their personalized reports to make on-farm improvements for their bottom line. They shared the reports with financial institutions, suppliers and community members.

“Industry-wide, we will continue to face pressures on environmental stewardship of air, soil and water,” says National Pork Board member and Minnesota producer Dale Stevermer. “To defend our ability to operate, we need current, real-life numbers and to be advocates and educators. We need baseline numbers so we can strive for continuous improvement; that is what the industry has built itself on throughout the past 50-60 years.” The data collection process takes about two hours and can be submitted in any format. Key insights from the report may include:

• Promoting biodiversity on farms – for example, planting more trees around our farm;

• Emphasizing a commitment to the community and employment, with salary and benefits, in rural America; and

• Sharing the value of manure when applied at the right levels and soil depth to improve soil health.

USD USDAA’’s F s Fororeign eign Agricultur Agricultural Service al Service Allocates 2023 Allocates F Funds unds

Before the end of 2023, the U . S. Department of A griculture’s Foreign Agr icultural Service (FAS) awarded nearly $20 3 million to help expand export markets for t h e nation’s farm and food produc t s. These funds w e re awarded t o more than 60 organization s t h a t are involved w ith USDA’s Market Access Program (MAP) and Fo reign Market De v elopment Program (FMD).

$175.6 million was allocated by FAS to fiscal 2023 MAP funds to assist 67 nonprofit organizations and cooperatives that support areas such as market research and technical assistance. FAS also provided $27.1 million in the 2023 fiscal year to 20 trade groups representing U.S. agricultural producers.

According to the National Pork Producers Council, NPPC does not directly receive these funds, but continues to lobby Congress to fund each program as one of their Farm Bill priorities. In 2021, MAP and FMD programs benefitted the U.S. pork industry with a record of $8.1 billion products exported.

Agricultur Agricultural P al Prrovisions in the Government ovisions the Government Spending Bill Spending Bill

President Biden signed into law the $1.7 trillion Omnibus Appropriations bill on December 23, 2022. This spending bill funds the government until Sept. 30. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stated that the “USDA is ready to hit the ground running in 2023 to keep expanding our economy

from the bottom up and the middle out and ensure that rural communities, farmers, ranchers, and producers are empowered with the tools necessary to thrive.”

The funding package will prioritize economic development in rural America. In addition, the bill included several agricultural items such as disaster assistance, livestock mandatory reporting, and foreign audits.

Wholesale P Wholesale Pork P ork Prices L rices Lower on Se ower on Seasonal Ef asonal Effects, fects, High Slaughter High Slaughter

According to Pork Checkoff, “product markets continue to hold a soft undertone, in part because slaughter at nearly 2.6 million head is near annual highs while retail demand for fresh pork has yet to kick in.” At the end of 2022, ham and pork trim prices had declined due to the holiday season. In addition, pork belly prices have struggled to gain momentum to the overstock of freezer supply.

P Prroposition 12 Update oposition 12

In 2018, the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) and American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) filed a legal challenge to Proposition 12, which prohibits the sale of pork, eggs, and veal not produced to arbitrary production standards. Standards include farmers providing more space for egg laying hens, breeding sows, and calves raised for veal. Proposition 12 originally was passed by California

voters in November 2018. The legal challenge asked the U.S. Supreme Court to strike Proposition 12 as it is invalid under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

In March 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the challenge in the fall of 2022. The Biden administration and others representing the U.S. economy filed amicus briefs in support of N PPC’s case. In September, California announced it finally completed the Prop 12 implementation the same day NPPC/AFBF was filed a reply brief. On October 11, 2022, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments.

F Final Rule of Defining Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Released

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a final rule defining Waters of the United States (WOTUS) under the Clean Water Act (CWA) on December 30, 2022. The final rule will cover the waters that were initially aimed to be protected in the Clean Water Act.

With the debate over WOTUS nearly reaching 50 years, the first rule was issued during the Obama administration. This rule included navigable waters, upstream waters, and certain streams farmers use for drainage and irrigation. During the Trump administration, navigable waters were more narrowly defined with the Navigable Waters Protection Rule (NWPR).

According to NPPC, this final rule causes concern for pork producers as it may require more CWA permits, including many drainage features found in or next to farm fields.

esults: NPB Prromotes Br omotes Brand in and 2022

In a constant effort to combat the myths about pig production, National Pork Board has focused on key areas to improve the Real Pork brand. NPB has focused heavily on demonstrating that pork is the most sustainably produced meat through quantifying on-farm practices and positive environmental outcomes. As of November 2022, more than 300 operations representing 2 million pigs have been enrolled in these reports.

On-farm sustainability reports also quantify the value and impact of manure application and adopting in-field practices. Through data recorded, Pork Checkoff reported $8.6 million dollars saved.

In addition, NPB focused o n fin ding new opportunities t o grow pork sa les and creating v alue for ground pork in groc e ry stores. Through Pork Checkoff- funded projec t s, gro und pork is on t rack to surpass 2019 sales.

Biosecurity guidelines

Practical biosecurity guidelines that we can all follow

Whether you are a 4-H/FFA member that has been at some shows or a hog breeder, please remember there are important biosecurity practices we should all follow.

Recommended Supplies for Use at Swine Farms:

™ BE PREPARED by having the proper supplies. Here is a checklist of supplies that should be used by farms and/or those visiting swine farms:

3 Disposable Boots – have enough for everyone to double boot at each location in case it is necessary; purchase boots with a min. of 4 ml thickness.

3 Disinfectants - Accel, Tek-Trol (comes in both a liquid and an aerosol), 1Stroke, Environ, Virkon S, Synergize, or Chlorox; it is recommended to have both wipes and sprays.

3 Clean Tote Box – this box should house all of the “clean” supplies (plastic boots, coveralls, trash bags, sanitizer, etc.) so that they are kept separate and are sealed away from a potentially contaminated environment.

3 Trash Bags – for use in throwing away disposable items after completion of the visit.

14

For Potential Buyers Visiting Swine Farms:

1. COMMUNICATE with the breeder/owner prior to arriving at their farm to learn their expectations. Establish what direction to enter the farm, where to park, and what to wear. Follow the wishes of what each farm owner wants. Some will have specific instructions and different requirements that may be more detailed. Just because something is suitable for one, doesn’t mean that will work for everyone. Ask the owner to detail any farm-specific biosecurity protocols that you will need to follow during the visit. Ask about the current herd health status. If the farm is undergoing a disease outbreak, it is recommended to NOT visit this farm due to the increased risk of spread to other farms that will be potentially visited.

2. PARK in the designated parking area for the farm. Obey all signage regarding access to specific areas. If no parking area exists, park as far away from the livestock barn as possible on the gravel or hard surface, or park on the edge of the public road close to the location. Avoid parking/driving in muddy areas on the farm.

3. LEAVE ALL PERSONAL ITEMS in the vehicle and do not bring them onto the farm; this should include, but not be limited to whips, ball caps, jewelry, etc. (anything that manure or infected dust particles can be transported on should be avoided). If it is necessary to wear a ball cap at multiple farms then you should apply an aerosol disinfectant on it between farms.

4. Respect the LINE OF SEPERATION at each farm. The Line of Separation is defined as the line between the area that is to be used by the visitor and the area to be used by farm personnel.

5. DO NOT TOUCH any pigs while on the farm if you do not have to. People that touch hogs need to sanitize hands upon departure before getting back into the vehicle.

6. When leaving REMOVE DIRTY BOOTS next to your vehicle but before you enter the vehicle. Put trash into a garbage bag and place in a location designated by the farm or away from clean supplies. Everyone should clean their hands with sanitizer or wipes before entering the vehicle. Note that you should try to keep the inside of the vehicle as sanitary as possible.

7. WASH/DISINFECT VEHICLES AND TRAILERS in between each road trip. Pay special attention to the wheel wells and undercarriage. A high temperature wash is critical. Be sure to thoroughly disinfect the inside of the vehicle between road trips. Each night during a road trip spray the inside of the vehicle with an aerosol disinfectant and wipe down the steering wheel.

8. Shoes s hould be sanitized daily when tr aveling to farms and sales with o ne o f the r ecommended disinfectants . If you ar e stopping at multi ple farms i n the same day th en you shoul d use an aer oso l disinfectant (i e. Tek-tr o l) to spr ay down everyone’ s shoes, clothes, and bal l caps between farms .

15

For Swine Farm Operators:

1. Maintain a log of visitors.

2. Establish a clear line of separation at the farm. This is a line dividing the area that is to be used by the farm for live animals (often referred to as the clean area) and the area that is outside of the live animal area (the dirty area). Only the owner goes into the pens and has contact with the pigs. Enforce no reaching into pens and zero contact with pigs by visitors. It is recommended that a separate area be used to show/view pigs.

3. Designate a parking area for visitors.

4. Traffic flow – utilize a single direction traffic flow by designating a single entrance / exit point for vehicles.

5. Foot baths – If managed correctly, provide and encourage the use of foot bath stations as people enter the farm. Refresh the solution periodically depending on level of use. However, bear in mind that a contaminated foot bath could be more detrimental than helpful. Do not rely solely on the use of a foot bath.

6. Establish a designated area away from all swine for disposable items, such as boot covers and other trash, to be collected for removal.

26
An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure. Dilution is part of the solution.

When the show ends, the real work begins:

Bio-security is just as important after the show! Taking the necessary precautions is important right now to protect the health of our industry. While it may be simple to just rid the pens of sand or shavings, cleaning and disinfecting your barns, trailers and even all of your tack is an important step to ensuring the health of your next set of pigs and everyone else’s. When cleaning equipment you can’t just stop with the outside of your showbox. All showbox contents such as spray bottles, brushes, feed cups, buckets and even your whip need to be disinfected.

1. Make sure to wash everything well; disinfect with diluted Clorox, Accel, Tek-Trol or other disinfectant, and let it all sit for a period of time. It is best to do this at a location not on your farm or in an isolated area farthest away from high traffic area and animals.

2. Do not wear the same clothes, shoes or caps you wore at the show once you arrive home. Clean and disinfect as soon as possible.

3. Dispose of any unused feed that was in the barns. It is possible for virus particles to survive on feedstuffs.

4. Monitor all animals daily for illness. If you see any signs of illness alert your veterinarian immediately.

Protect the health of the swine industry by practicing sound biosecurity protocols. We are all responsible for protecting livestock health and must be held accountable.

It is no secret that supporting and encouraging our youth is one of the most important actions we all can take. For more than a decade, the Certified Texas Bred Program has given back over $115,000 to youth in scholarship funds. Through the Texas Pork Producers Association Foundation Gilt Scholarship & Production Grant, the association has been fortunate enough to support the youth of Texas in their future endeavors.

The purpose of the Texas Pork Producers Association Foundation Gilt Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to the most capable and deserving Texas FFA & 4-H members that have exhibited Certified Texas Bred Registry barrows and gilts as a youth project. In addition, the Texas Pork Producers Association Foundation Gilt Production Grant is awarded to graduating seniors who are planning to pursue and or continue their efforts in swine production.

Association membership shares a strong commitment in recognizing youth that have been involved within the CTBR program. The TPPA Foundation Gilt Scholarship/Production Grant is funded with proceeds of the Foundation Gilt which is sold as lot 3 in the Gilts of Distinction sale at Texas’ Elite Showcase. Since the beginning of the program, 12 firms have donated the foundation female. This year, the female will be donated by Luke Lindner of Lindner Showpigs.

Since the first scho larship recipients in 2011, 4 6 students with a pass ion for t he CTBR program and swin e indu stry have been awarded t h is scholarship. Rec ipi ents have since travelled nationw ide to pursue their goals.

Jarrot Foote grew up in Seminole, Texas, raising and showing pigs with his family. After receiving this scholarship in 2017, Foote attended South Plains College where he was a member of the livestock judging team. He then continued his education at Texas Tech University and graduated 2021 with a degree in Agricultural Education.

Currently, Foote is the ag teacher at Plains ISD and raises showpigs with his father, Dwight, as JDF Farms. JDF Farms has won several CTBR Class Champions, including a class champion at the Texas’ Elite Showcase last year.

“I believe this scholarship means more to me now than when I received it,” Foote said. “It was a great honor to receive this scholarship, but now being a breeder who believes in this program, it means just a bit more. “

Receiving the Foundation Gilt Scholarship in 2020, Adaline Utley of Levelland, Texas, has used this scholarship to pursue her career in ag policy. Utley is a sophomore Animal Science and Agricultural Communications major at Texas A&M University. When asked what this scholarship meant to her, Utley said the scholarship assisted her in more ways than one.

“ The CTBR Foundation Scholarship has relieved part of the financial burden that comes with college, so that I am able to focus on my studies and remain involved in the Texas A&M study body,” Utley said.

Last year, Utley had the opportunity to intern in Washington, D.C. with the National Association of Wheat Growers. After college, Utley plans to attend law school and become an agricultural lobbyist in Washington, D.C.

Recent scholarship recipient, Faith Geisitweidt of Fredericksburg, Texas, has recently completed her first semester of college at Texas Tech University. In the last several months, Faith has competed at the National FFA contest in Prepared Public Speaking, was accepted into the student senate at TTU, and attended the Western Leaders Summit. Faith said she plans to use this opportunity to impact the industry she was raised in.

“The Certified Texas Bred Registry Foundation Female scholarship has been a blessing to my college experience,” Geistweidt said. “ With this scholarship, I have been able to pursue my degree in Agricultural Communications with minors in International Agribusiness and Political Science. Thanks to this scholarship, I have the opportunity to chase my dreams while giving back to the industry which built me ”

THE FIRM BEHIND THE FOUNDATION FEMALE

30

The excitement began at a young age. Growing up around his family raising show pigs and running a feed mill, Luke Lindner has been rooted within the industry for numerous years. After discovering his passion for show pigs early on, he has since opened the door to countless opportunities for success.

In 2015, Luke began Lindner Show Pigs in Comfort, Texas, immediately following high school. Originally starting with 30 sows, his operation has now grown into a 150 sow operation mostly consisting of crossbreds, berkshires, and other minor breeds. Luke said his operation farrows yearround with a focus on Texas majors.

For as long as Luke can remember, he has had a passion for breeding and genetics. By keeping a clear mindset and focusing on his preferences, Lindner Show Pigs has had much success at many levels over the last seven years.

Luke said his father, Jason, has been his greatest role model not only in shaping him into who he is today but for crafting his mindset within the livestock industry. Jason began Lindner Show Feeds in 2001. From feeding to raising livestock, Jason has given Luke much advice on how to pursue his dream of running his own operation.

“The best advice I have ever been given is from my dad,” Luke said. ”Dad always said believe in your genetics and don’t be afraid to use your own boars.”

31

This advice has proven to be more than true for Lindner’s operation. In just seven years, Lindner Show Pigs has generated crossbred and berkshire-crossbred genetics that has had tremendous success across the nation. Whataberk, a boar no stranger to the show pig industry, has had a significant impact on this herd.

“I bred a berkshire sow to Wedding Night to test it out,” Luke said. “I ended up with Whataberk and his brother that was Berkshire marked. I kept Whataberk intact; however, his brother ended up Champion Berkshire barrow at San Angelo. In his first crop, Whataberk sired champions at every Texas major, OYE, and LSU. I now have way more berkshire classing sows than I ever thought I would have.”

On the other hand, the cornerstone sow for Lindner Show Pigs would be a purebred yorkshire sow, Kirby. She alone has raised the fourth overall crossbred gilt at World Pork Expo, the Reserve Grand Champion barrow at Fort Worth, the Champion Yorkshire barrow at the Hill Country District Show, multiple class winners, and numerous keeper gilts.

She is also the grandmother to ‘Disco’, the $60,000 gilt sold at the San Antonio gilt sale in 2020, the Grand Champion barrow at Rodeo Austin in 2019, and the Reserve Champion Other Crossbred barrow at San Antonio in 2022. Luke said she is still in production today and they continue to see banners out of her line each year.

32

Before these accomplishments, a significant part of Lindner Show Pigs started when two teenagers fell in love. Luke began dating his wife, Fallon, at ages 14 and 16. A few years later, he then began to take raising pigs seriously and started to help her and her sister, Lauren, with their show pigs. From there on, the trio’s dedication set the foundation for Lindner Show Pigs for years to come.

“We were a bunch of young kids with a passion,” Luke said. “Helping Fallon and Lauren was some of the best times of my life. My proudest moment and something I will never forget was raising and watching Lauren win Grand Overall at Rodeo Austin for her last show her senior year.”

Since then, the memories just keep getting better. Luke and Fallon got married in November 2021 and built their home on the farm. The pair continues to focus on making their firm the best that it can be. Luke said Fallon is what keeps him going and is his greatest encourager.

“My wife has been my greatest help around the farm,“ Luke said. “She is the best pig puller I have ever seen and can spot a health issue without batting an eye. I often joke that I probably wouldn’t have a live pig without her.”

I have seen firsthand that showing livestock can completely change a kid’s work ethic and attitude. This industry and showing livestock teach youth responsibility, consistency, and how to be humble winners and gracious losers. 33
“ “

In addition, the Lindner Show Pigs family has grown tremendously. The Lindners help multiple families across the state at Texas majors. Luke said the most rewarding part of this industry would be helping these families that have invested in his operation and watching them succeed.

“I have seen firsthand that showing livestock can completely change a kid’s work ethic and attitude,” Luke said. “This industry and showing livestock teach youth responsibility, consistency, and how to be humble winners and gracious losers.”

Luke attributes the success of Lindner Show Pigs to his customers and their belief in his program. With many goals in mind for the next several years, Lindner’s focus will continue to be guiding youth and their families to success.

“The ultimate goal of our operation is to continue helping these families be successful at all levels of competition for years to come,” Luke said. “We consider them our family. I, nor my operation, would not be what we are today without them.”

TEXAS PORK PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION PRESENTS THE

Junior

Ambassador Program

For many decades, the Texas Pork Producers Association has focused on advocating, educating and encouraging the youth in Texas. The Association is driven to provide different avenues for Texas youth to grow within the industry by providing things like scholarship, the Texas Pork Leadership Camp, Youth Symposium, and more.

With efforts to continue our mission of advancing a sustainable and profitable pork industry, the Association was inspired to create a youth program that would generate visible leaders for our industry and communities. New this year, TPPA will introduce the Texas Pork Producers Association Junior Ambassador Program to begin creating current and future youth advocates.

Over the course of two years, junior ambassadors will participate in association events, youth tours, personal development training, educational sessions, and more. Junior ambassadors will encourage, educate, and serve others to help take part in actively advocating wherever they are. The program will challenge youth to want more for themselves while learning more about the swine industry.

Director of Youth and Communications, Riley Reep, said she hopes that this program will generate future leaders not only for the swine industry, but for others as well.

“When the idea of this program surfaced, I was encouraged to establish our why in implementing this program in the first place,” Reep said. “After much thought, it was simple: to create future innovators, problem-solvers, logical leaders, and selfless role models. We always say our youth is our future, but we have to ensure they are prepared to make a difference.”

How it Works

Applications for the program will be open from March 1 through May 1, 2023. For the first year, six junior ambassadors will be selected through an application and interview process. Following 2023, the association will move forward with selecting four junior ambassadors each year. Each group of ambassadors will serve a term of two years. The first TPPA Junior Ambassadors will be announced in June 2023. Junior ambassadors will be held to a higher standard as they will be expected to represent the association and our industry at many levels. It is required that junior ambassadors put forth all efforts to fulfill their duties during his or her term.

Upon selection in June, junior ambassadors will travel to the TPPA office in Lubbock, TX, for orientation and educational training. Over three days, junior ambassadors will extensively review the program, meet with association leadership, participate in public speaking/crisis communications training, learn about

Feature
40

the Association, expand their knowledge about the industry, as well as engage in personal and professional development activities.

In September, they will travel to Amarillo, TX for a week to tour and meet with multiple industry representatives during the Junior Ambassador Tour. The goal of the tour will be to allow ambassadors to further their knowledge of the industry while gaining valuable networking experiences with industry partners. Each year, junior ambassadors will travel to a new destination to grow their network and experience new areas of the industry.

In addition, junior ambassadors will attend and assist with multiple events such as Texas’ Elite Showcase, BBQ Austin, and the Texas Pork Industry Conference.

Application Process and Guidelines

Eligible applicants for the junior ambassador program must be ages 17-21 as of January 1 of the application year. On March 1st of each year, the application process will open. The application will be comprised of a handful of essay questions and three (3) references. At least one reference listed must be a TPPA member. Applicants must complete the application by May 1st. From there, the youth advisory committee will review all applications anonymously. Through a rubric given, applicants can earn up to 80 points. Each committee member will review and award points to each application. Once all

applications are sent in, the Director of Youth and Communications will add all points together. The highest scores will be interviewed. Applicants will be notified of their status by May 15th.

Interviews will be conducted virtually during June with the applicant, an outside group of industry professionals, and the Director of Youth and Communications. The applicant will be asked questions formed by the outside group of industry professionals.

After all interviews are completed, the interview panel will rank the applicants individually. Rankings will determine which youth members will be selected to serve as a Texas Pork Producers Association Junior Ambassador. Junior ambassadors will be announced within 24 hours of the final interview.

Each year, four (4) junior ambassadors will be selected to serve a two (2) year term. Every year during June, a new group of four (4) members be elected. For the first year (2023), we will elect six (6) junior ambassadors. Following 2023, we will move forward with selecting four (4) junior ambassadors each year.

OWEN SEIDENBERGER

MEET
44

SEIDENBERGER YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

In the small agricultural town of Garden City, TX, you will find Owen Seidenberger, better known as “Big O.” From his family farm to his many accomplishments, it is safe to say “Big O” is a young man with even bigger goals. However, to Owen, his greatest joys in life are the opportunities that have crafted him into who he is today.

“I pride myself as a God fearing, farm boy who loves to evaluate livestock and works hard to reach my goals,” said Seidenberger. “ These goals pushed me out of my comfort zones and allowed me to build confidence in public speaking and leadership at a very young age.”

Owen is the son of Eric and Christy Seidenberger and the brother to Reed and Lacy. For many years, the Seidenberger family has been involved within the livestock industry. Growing up heavily involved in the agriculture, Owen and his siblings found their love for showing swine at a young age.

“My dad raised and showed pigs while growing up. My mom did not even know the difference in swine breeds,” said Owen. “Next thing we knew, Reed started showing pigs in third grade and our barns have not been empty since. My dad had no desire to raise show pigs in spite of the rest of us begging him frequently. My mom took the challenge of being a “Show Mom” very seriously and hauled us to multiple show pig camps so we could learn how to care, feed, and train our animals as a family.”

45

For over 15 years, the Seidenberger family has been purchasing show pigs from predominately breeders of the Certified Texas Bred Registry program. Owen and his siblings have showed at numerous jackpots and all of the Texas major shows, including Texas’ Elite Showcase. In 2022, Owen earned the honor as being named a Premier Exhibitor of the Certified Texas Bred Registry.

“To be recognized as a CTBR Premier Exhibitor swine showman is a dream come true,” Seidenberger said. “It is the ultimate accolade for myself and my family.”

In addition to this award, Seidenberger placed in the top 10 and made the sale at four Texas majors last year. He said his ultimate goal is to show good swine to their potential; therefore, this was proof to himself that he was on the right track.

Throughout his four years in high school, Owen has been involved in many organizations. He has served as the football team captain, a 4-H state officer, FFA officer, and more. Additionally, he has been heavily involved in the National Honor Society and his church.

Owen found his passion for evaluating livestock at a young age. Ever since, he has competed at 4-H and FFA livestock judging contests across the state. When he was in the 6th grade, he said that their county hired a young swine enthusiast, Jacob McKillip, that brought a new perspective to his family’s show stock. Although McKillip is no longer the Seidenberger’s county agent, Owen says Jacob is considered family and has helped him continue to grow his passion for the swine industry.

46

With great success at the 2022 Texas’ Elite Showcase, Owen found pride in his achievements and wanted to keep the genetics to raise his own swine herd. After much discussion with Jacob, he and Owen decided to fulfill their dream of raising show pigs and M&S Livestock was formed. McKillip said Owen understood the time and effort it takes to win at the highest levels; therefore, he was ecstatic when Owen wanted his help to start a herd of their own.

“After spending many years around Owen, I came to realize he not only has an incredible eye and ability to evaluate livestock, but more importantly matched my level of passion and competitive drive,” McKillip said. “When I was his age, I would have killed for someone to take me under their wing and help me get started. So when he expressed interest in raising hogs it was a no brainer to bring him into the fold.”

The best advice Owen has been given is that life isn’t always about winning or success, but more so about the memories and lessons of the road you have traveled on.

For Owen, he says his biggest challenge has not been beginning his operation, but that he lost his best friend, Ryder Gass, in a car accident in January 2022.

“My whole world flipped upside down on that night of January 5th,” Owen said. “It was a struggle to proceed with anything in life with normality as before. All of my hobbies and interests all of the sudden seemed so dull.”

Owen’s favorite bible verse is Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according

to his purpose.” Through standing firm in his faith, Owen made an effort to grow from his loss and prepare for the next chapter of life by surrounding himself with those who believe in him.

“Thankfully, I have people in my life willing to stand by me and push me such as Jacob,” Owen said. “His willingness to partner with me in M&S Livestock has helped me in my grieving. I love to watch videos, study genetics and talk about the breeding pieces for future litters.”

The pair looks forward to raising pigs that have potential to earn awards for the families that have and will purchase show pigs from M&S Livestock in the future. Seidenberger says the most rewarding part about being involved within the industry has been the friendships and connections he has made.

Following the loss of Ryder, Jason C. Spence continuously checked in on Owen. With Spence’s help, he and Owen honored Ryder at their county stock show.

“Spence will always hold a very special place in my heart not just because he helped me raise over $58,000 for the Ryder Gass Memorial Scholarship, but for his guiding words and kind texts the days and weeks after the loss of my friend,” Owen said. “Jason never met a stranger. He spread his love for the Lord and raised countless funds for the youth of Texas.”

Owen has had many individuals that he has looked up to within the industry. He said one of his role models has been Todd Beyers because he started his herd as a young man and has since changed the caliber of the Chester breed. In addition, Owen said

49

he not only admires Beyers’ success within the industry, but even more so he and his family’s humble, kind and God-fearing character.

Growing up alike, Seidenberger also looks up to Marty and Zach Weishuhn. Similar in kind, the brothers come from a cotton farming family with an eye and passion for livestock. Owen enjoys their frequent conversations about genetics and improvement. In addition, Seidenberger looks up to his county agent, Cody Trimble.

In the future, Owen plans to continue his livestock judging career at the junior college level then transfer to a major university while pursuing a degree in Ag Business. Ultimately, he plans to continue his pursuit in raising livestock while being blessed enough to enjoy large game hunts around the world. With his values of honesty, dedication and hard work, “Big O” says he is looking forward for the years to come.

“I have gained resilience from raising and showing livestock,” Seidenberger said. “It takes work to be successful and you can’t give up. I know the lessons I have taken from the highs and lows throughout my four years of high school will be fundamental for later success.”

Become certified in quality Care

The Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) curriculum enhances the educational experience for young people who show or produce livestock. The national, multi-species, science-based program for ages 8 to 21 focuses on continually improving the care of animals and provide a higher level of food safety to consumers.

The YQCA curriculum was developed through a collaboration of livestock industry professionals and educators, and it is accepted by many state livestock shows and fairs that require youth quality assurance certification. The program is an expansion of the National Pork Board’s former Youth PQA Plus program, which offered training for swine only. Visit porkcheckoff.org to learn more.
