Executive Message Resiliency does not come without support... Lately the world seems to be lurching from one crisis to another. We’ve experienced a global pandemic, dramatic changes to how we conduct our daily lives, economic uncertainty, and political and social turmoil, as well as some natural disasters. Then there are personal traumas that people are also dealing with, such as the loss of a loved one, declining health, unemployment, or tragic accidents. For many us, this is a time of unprecedented struggle and upheaval. Why do some people seem to be better able to cope in these troubling times than others? Resilience. Those in our industry have it. While everyone’s situation is different, it is true that people with resilience tend to have a higher tolerance for the emotional distress generated by hard times. The more resilient you are, the better you’re able to tolerate the feelings of stress, anxiety, and sadness that accompany adversity and find a way to rebound from setbacks. Being resilient allows us to maintain a more positive outlook through even the toughest of times. But being resilient does not mean we do not need support, that we don’t need help at times. TPPA is full of resilient individuals and the association itself has been resilient through tough times for over 130 years. We will all get through it, but we all need to band together and support one another. You need support; TPPA needs support. Support is how we have become resilient. The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting organizations and people all over the world. Many are forced to transition to remote workspaces or host online versions of their events. TPPA is no different. But when it comes to strategy and shifting focus, there is no roadmap to follow. Your leadership is working to drive progress towards our mission during these unsettling times, even though it can be difficult. Because of the pandemic and the consequent issues with packing plant, restaurant and school closures, we’ve seen prices go near record lows. The direct impact that has had on Checkoff revenue is significant. Revenues from CTBR and annual auctions that will be later in the fall need to be strong for us to continue working on our goals. Our mission is the advancement of a sustainable and profitable industry for our members. So for 99% of our members, the major stock shows are everything. Being able to market your pigs to families and exhibitors this fall is everything. That’s why our focus is communicating with the shows and other decision-makers, and exploring all opportunities that allow youth to show their pigs. Additionally, we are continuing to expand the reach of the Certified Texas Bred Registry and will be making several announcements. The CTBR program is so important and we want this to be of great value to you breeders and youth alike. Yet there are so many other directives that play a part in advancing our mission. Keeping this association going to serve you is vital. The tough stretches represent the time for everyone to come together and support more than ever. We all need each other to make it through this. We are much stronger when united and working towards the same goal. We need to be positive and very focused right now. We’ve seen time and time again that when we all come together, great things can happen. And now, we need great things to happen. We need that level of support on concentrated efforts. Believe in the foundation of why the organization exists. Our membership is what we care about. We all need the necessary tools and resources to be effective. We will continue to fight for you and our industry; it is what we are here for. As always, feel free to reach out about anything, Brandon R. Gunn 14

National News Congressmen Introduce Agricultural Fairs Rescue Act
Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) introduced the Agricultural Fairs Rescue Act recently to help preserve agricultural fairs across the country and offset the devastating financial losses they have experienced due to COVID-19. The legislation will provide $500 million in grant funding for agricultural fairs through state departments of agriculture to keep them functioning and preserve them for the future, according to a release. The Agricultural Fair Rescue Grants would be administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) to states or state departments of agriculture based on the loss of attendance those fairs have experienced in 2020. “County and local fairs are very important to agriculture and our communities all across our country. Fairs provide our producers with the opportunity to market their crops and livestock, and foster the next generation of farmers. They also are an economic engine and a gathering place for us to highlight and celebrate our communities. Like many institutions, fairs have been impacted by COVID-19, and we must provide them assistance if we are going to preserve these fairs for the future, Panetta said in the release.
Agricuture a Big Part of Senate Covid Relief Package Proposal Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) recently released the initial proposal for the next COVID-19 economic recovery package, which included $20 billion for agriculture, covering both direct payments and compensation for livestock farmers for the cost of euthanizing hogs due to the COVID crisis. NPPC appreciates that Republican leadership has included funding to compensate producers for euthanizing hogs due to COVIDrelated supply chain disruptions, and will continue to urge for wholesale inclusion of the RELIEF for Producers Act in the final relief package.
The RELIEF for Producers Act was introduced earlier this month by Sens. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), and since then has added three more co-sponsors: Sens. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.). The Senate COVID proposal also a) includes $245 million in additional funding for Agriculture Quarantine Inspection at U.S. borders, addressing a funding shortfall which NPPC recently highlighted to Congress (for more information, click here) and b) addresses Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) eligibility for farmers and ranchers who are sole proprietors. 24
U.S. Meatpackers Test UV Air Treatment Systems in Plants Two of the world’s largest meatpackers have installed ultraviolet air cleaning equipment in some of their U.S. processing plants. The decision comes as pressure increases on food companies to protect workers from growing concerns about airborne transmission of COVID-19. Tyson Foods Inc. said they are doing extensive research on air flow in their facilities to better understand how it might benefit team members during the pandemic. “We’re also testing numerous new technologies to include ultraviolet air treatment systems across several of our plants,” the company said in a statement. JBS USA has said that it installed “ultraviolet germicidal air sanitation” equipment in plant ventilation and air purification systems that use a specific frequency range of light waves to kill germs. Although it is not known whether such technologies kill the new coronavirus, research is underway to discover those answers. These decisions to test UV air treatment systems underline the mounting pressure to protect workers in the U.S. meat industry, which has seen more than 16,000 plant employees in 23 states infected with COVID-19 and 86 worker deaths related to the respiratory disease.
ASF Remains Top Global Animal Protein Issue Despite the dire consequences that COVID-19 has created over the past five months for the U.S. pork industry and others, a new report by Rabobank asserts that ASF is still the major influence on global pork markets. It points to ASF’s continued impact on pig herds and pork production in China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and parts of eastern Europe as major examples for this conclusion.
While the report cites that recovery is underway in China, it predicts a further significant drop in pork production in 2020. Similarly, as the ASF situation is stabilizing in Vietnam, further reductions in 2020 production are expected. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the disease continues to spread. As such, China and Southeast Asia should continue to increase pork imports, with the expectation that China’s pork imports will reach record levels. Not to overlook the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the report says it adds further complications to the overall pork outlook. Rabobank’s earlier expectations of pork production increases in North America, Brazil and some parts of Europe in 2020, are now expected to be constrained. Likewise, the firm expects pork consumption to decline, largely from a reduction in foodservice channel operations. However, the report says this reduction in consumption will not make up for reduced production, resulting in relatively tight pork markets.
House Passes FY2021 Agriculture Spending Bill
In late July, the U.S. House passed a four-bill, $259.5 billion fiscal year 2021 spending package that includes $24 billion in funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. The agriculture bill includes: $1.07 billion—$27 million above the 2020 enacted level—for USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and $3.3 billion—$92 million above the 2020 enacted level—for the Agriculture Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. It’s unclear when the Senate plans to address the spending measures. 25
Texas Capitol Report Runoff elections The Republican and Democratic primary runoff elections, along with a Texas Senate special election in Central Texas provided plenty of excitement for political junkies who have been starved of action for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent protests. One race that TPPA watched closely was the congressional runoff in the panhandle. For U.S. Congress, former White House physician and Trump-endorsed Dr. Ronny Jackson took 55% of the vote against Josh Winegarner, the industry affairs director for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, in the Republican primary runoff for Congressional District 13 (formerly Mac Thornberry seat). Jackson will face Democrat Gus Trujillo and Libertarian Jack Westbrook for the seat in the November general election. Trujillo won a Democratic primary runoff against Greg Sagan.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar projects a fiscal 2021 ending shortfall of $4.6 billion in revised revenue estimate Comptroller Glenn Hegar on July 20 offered a sobering reassessment of the state’s fiscal condition in light of the challenges Texas faces with the COVID-19 pandemic and a downturn in oil & gas markets – a net $7.5 billion turn for the worse, with the state’s current budget now $4.6 billion in the red. Just over a year ago, in June 2019 after the Texas Legislature passed the state’s 2020-21 budget, Hegar certified the budget and estimated state had a $2.9 billion surplus. Hegar updated his budget numbers during testimony before the Legislative Budget Board, a ten-member HouseSenate leadership committee co-chaired by Lt. Governor Patrick and House Speaker Bonnen.
Abbott hosts Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue for ceremonial signing Gov. Greg Abbott on July 16 hosted U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue for the ceremonial signing of the Shared Stewardship agreement between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the State of Texas. The Shared Stewardship agreement establishes a framework for federal and state agencies to improve collaboration in responding to natural resource concerns and ecological challenges in Texas. The agreement is between the USDA’s Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and Texas A&M Forest Service.
Abbott extends statewide COVID-19 disaster declaration On July 10, Gov. Abbott issued a proclamation extending his disaster declaration for all Texas counties in response to COVID-19. Originally issued on March 13, the disaster declaration provides the state a number of resources to effectively serve Texans as the state continues to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. 26
Texas Sunset Commission: Texas has a continuing need for the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas Animal Health Commission The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission has issued its reports to the Texas Legislature on two of the agencies it is reviewing during this legislative interim, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC). The Commission was created in 1977 to address inefficient, intrusive, burdensome and outdated policies in government, and also to limit government expansion by questioning the need for and the effectiveness of state agencies and their programs. State agencies are, in general, reviewed by the Commission every 12 years (on a staggered basis). The Commission can recommend to the Texas Legislature (which has the final say) that an agency be abolished or continued with changes. Regarding the Texas Department of Agriculture, the report stated, “Sunset staff concluded TDA is well-managed, and found the department’s day-to-day responsibilities are largely removed from the politics and public attention focused on the commissioner, and recommends the department continue for 12 years. However, Sunset staff identified several opportunities to provide a firmer foundation for staff to successfully perform TDA’s multitude of functions regardless of any shifting focus at the top.” The Legislature created the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) in 1907 to foster the development of the state’s agriculture industry by researching plant diseases and pests, gathering statistical information on agricultural production, and promoting agricultural products. Today, the department supports and promotes the state’s nearly $25 billion agriculture industry while overseeing more than 124,000 licensees to protect the public and regulate the industry. As the third-largest agricultural producer in the United States, Texas has a vested interest in regulating and promoting the state’s agriculture industry, which includes a wide range of commodities. The services provided by the department support the state’s nearly 250,000 farms covering over 127 million acres, as well as Texas’ rural population of approximately 3.8 million. Reviewers of the Texas Animal Health Commission wrote in the agency’s review, “Sunset staff found TAHC remains necessary and recommends continuing it for 12 years as an independent, standalone agency. However, in examining the agency’s ability to prevent, control, and eradicate animal diseases in Texas, the review found TAHC has not fully kept up with Texas’ shifting disease landscape.” TAHC protects and enhances the health of livestock and fowl, and ensures the marketability and mobility of livestock, while minimizing risk to human health. Created in 1893 as the Texas Livestock Sanitary Commission to control cattle fever tick outbreaks in beef cattle, the Legislature has since expanded the agency’s authority. TAHC now manages a range of animal populations including cattle, horses, poultry, goats and sheep, swine, and exotic livestock and fowl not native to the state. The agency accomplishes its mission through disease prevention, control, and eradication activities with a $16.1 million operating budget and 208 employees who work in the agency’s six regions throughout the state. Both reports must be officially adopted by the Sunset commissioners before being forwarded to the Texas Legislature to consider adopting any recommendations in the 2021 legislative session.

National Swine Updates NSR Purebred Influenced Crossbred Class
Beginning at The 2021 Exposition and National Junior Summer Spectacular and Summer Type Conference, NJSA members have the opportunity to show NSR Purebred Influenced Crossbreds as market (barrows) or breeding animals (gilts). Additionally, these animals would be eligible to show and be offered for sale in the respective crossbred portions of the open shows at NSR events. Requirements would include: 1. A documented parent (sire or dam) that is Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace, or Yorkshire. If utilizing a purebred sow, a DNA sample must be submitted to verify parentage. The use of a purebred sire would meet the same sire requirements as members recording a purebred litter. 2. The animal(s) must be recorded in the NSR Crosscheck Verification Program and documentation provided at the time of check-in. 3. Animals eligible to show could either be sired by or farrowed by a documented purebred parent. Additionally, animals that may not meet purebred breed eligibility requirements but still maintain a pedigree would be eligible to show in this division (ie. short counting Durocs, off- belted Hampshires) Junior Awards: NJSA will offer premiums for the Top 5 Purebred Influenced Crossbred Gilts and Barrows. The award structure will be as follows: Champion- $2000 Reserve Champion- $1500 3rd Overall- $750 4th Overall- $500 (*) Champion and Reserve Gilts will be eligible to automatically enter the sale
5th Overall- $250
This new program will provide youth swine exhibitors another opportunity to show swine projects at NJSA events and enhance the value and awareness of purebreds. Furthermore, this initiative increases value and education to NSR members by utilizing purebred genetics in crossbreeding schemes and helps build the crossbred swine registry data base. These animals would also be granted the opportunity to be merchandised during the crossbred sales at NSR events.

Texas Pork Industry Awards
Pork Hall of Honor Jay Winter
On display in the Howard Hesby Atrium of the Kleberg animal sciences building at Texas A&M University, the Texas Pork Industry Hall of Honor is an exclusive distinction comprised of revered individuals demonstrating lifetime achievements and significant contributions and leadership to the swine industry. This year, Jay Winter, of Idalou, becomes just the 28th inductee in the 130-year history of the Texas Pork Producers Association. Many would say this is long overdue. Everyone will say it is well-deserved! Known for his savvy and forward thinking, Jay has attained great respect in the industry as a progressive breeder, judge and mentor of great influence to fellow breeders and association members. Prominent breeder of all breeds, the Wintex herd has built an enviable reputation for quality, generating countless champions and breeding stock sold across the U.S.A.; the genetic impact of the WTX herdmark is everlasting. His standing as an industry leader brought appointments to the National Swine Registry (2 terms on executive board, 2 terms on Hampshire board), National Junior Swine Association (advisory board), Team Purebred (advisory board), Texas Pork Producers Association (4 terms, current VP) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (swine commissioner). An effective and dedicated individual, Jay has been instrumental in their progression. He spurned personal gain as a board member and always kept the focus on what was best for the association. His constructive contributions to agriculture and youth programs has been demonstrated by his unselfish roles as superintendent and advisor. He played a major role in the advancements of Texas major swine shows and contributed greatly to the establishment of Texas’ Elite Showcase. Fierce competitor. Legacy. Forward thinker. One of the best all-around stockman of his .generation.
Producer of the Year Beyers Farms
TPPA is proud to recognize Todd and Moriah Beyers, Beyers Farms, of Abernathy, with the Producer of the Year award! Designed to honor a breeder who has shown outstanding recent achievements in production and leadership, the recognition of these two are as fitting as can be. A perennial top breeder of the Certified Texas Bred Registry, and one of the elite Chester breeders in the entire country, their efforts go beyond the barn. Todd has served on the CTBR committee for five years and the TPPA board of directors for three, while also now on the board for the National Chester White Association. Moriah plays an integral part in the planning and facilitation of the annual conference and the youth leadership camp. Going above and beyond, Beyers Farms donated the 2020 CTBR Foundation Female, a phenomenal, proven female from their Chester sow herd. This selfless act just further reinforces their passion for the industry and their emphasis on youth development. Thank you Todd and Moriah for all that you do! 39

The Bayer Museum of Agricuture (BMA) is truly the definition of service to the agriculture industry. They have developed a first-class museum facility that teaches our community the importance of agriculture in our everyday lives. This is done through a growing list of interactive exhibits that focus on modern agriculture, its science and practices, creating a positive environment where museum visitors can see, hear and experience life on the farm. Always looking at how the experience can be further enhanced, the BMA is currently working towards the addition of more exhibits that have an emphasis on livestock. The efforts of the museum’s staff and leadership is second to none. The Texas Pork Producers Association has developed a wonderful partnership with the BMA, hosting several events and meetings over the years. It is our pleasure to recognize the Bayer Museum of Agriculture with the Industry Service award!

major could lead you to. Each day, we would hear from department professors, alumni and other students. Towards the middle of the semester, my instructor, Dr. Cindy Akers, talked to our class about everything you could be involved in on campus. I am not going to lie‌I was extremely overwhelmed. I was too afraid to talk to the student next to me let alone reach out to all of these organizations about what they had to offer. However, a specific organization caught my attention immediately, the Matador Institute of Leadership Engagement, otherwise referred to as the MILE program. Each MILE cohort selects 14 students representing all six of the departments within CASNR through an application and interview process. Over three semesters, these students develop personal and professional skills while learning about major issues facing all levels of agriculture. Trips to Washington D.C., Austin, and tours across different regions in Texas are all included to elevate the experience for each student. At the conclusion of the program, each student will receive a leadership certificate. I am excited to say I was lucky enough to have been selected as a member of the second MILE cohort last November. In January, we started off the program with a weekend retreat in Cross Plains, Texas. Along with other members of the cohort and our MILE advisor, Dr. Lindsay Kennedy, we dove straight into personal development
53
training. The MILE program is modelled after the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership (TALL) Program, which Dr. Kennedy is an alumnus of. Therefore, behind the scenes there is a team of agricultural leaders and CASNR faculty work together to help develop all aspects of the program. One member of the committee, Jim Prewitt, joined us at the retreat for a day. He took the time to speak with each of us personally and relate with each of us about who he has met from each of our hometowns. Seeing the reach that one person could have in various places was mind blowing to me. By this conversation with Mr. Prewett, as well as other personal development training over the weekend, I immediately saw how each of us were different in our own ways. However, we shared one common goal, to make a positive impact in the industry that shaped us into who we have become. Fast forward to the end of February where our cohort had the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet with a Polish agricultural group and TALL program current members and alumni. The Polish group consisted of industry professionals who were visiting to learn more about agriculture in the states. Throughout the night, I discovered that four members involved with the TALL program were all from my hometown of Ropesville. Seeing how far a small town of 423 people could reach really hit home with me. Plans for the rest of the semester included visiting South Texas and professional leadership training; however, COVID-19 moved the remainder of the 2020 spring semester online. Although our original plans 54
were cancelled, the fact that we had the chance take advantage of the cards we were dealt meant much more. Therefore, we had the chance to zoom with the Chief of Staff and Chief People Officer of the Texas Tech University System to discuss the system’s strategies on handling the pandemic and personal leadership training. Next semester may not look like normal, but I am eager to see what opportunities the MILE program will bring myself and other members of the cohort. By stepping out of my comfort zone and becoming involved in new organizations, I have found yet again a community of people who will push me to become better each day. Throughout this experience, I have learned that sometimes putting yourself out there to get involved can be hard since the past is comforting. Although the future may be unknown, you always have to trust that the best is yet to come For more information about the MILE program, please visit www.depts.ttu.edu/agriculturalsciences/mile.

First Take X Hill Jack X Uno This year had a little bit of a twist, Todd & Moriah Beyers of Beyers Farms donated an incredible sow! Elite genetics, and a proven female, she is the mother of the infamous “Guyer Gilt” that won so much this last summer. 33-10’s pedigree is backed by several champions that have proven themselves in an out of the showring. “We believe her influence will be felt for many generations in the Chester breed and only her new owner will experience the same success with her that she has generated our program.”

8-12 weeks of age based on their genetics and readiness to picture. Some pigs will have the proper amount of bloom earlier than others depending on maturity patterns, your creep feeding plans and environment. What are some other factors one should consider when selecting a sale date that works for you? First off, we encourage our consignors to look backwards at the calendar. If you want to host an online auction, you’ll need to have some help picturing -whether that is a professional photographer or your family on the farm. Give yourself more than a half a day on the calendar to take pictures especially, if it is your first time. Another factor to consider for most of our consignors is delivery options. Quite a few of our online sales are based around delivery points/live events consignors will be attending or third party haulers they would like to meet. Your auction manager can assist with narrowing down a sale date that would fit your firm’s needs.

Do your buyers know your plans for selling pigs this season? Whether you are a first time online sale consignor or you’re an old pro, you will need to communicate with your past, present and future buyers what your plans are for selling pigs. Be sure to utilize your website, social media, and online marketing platforms to help spread the word of your upcoming sale dates – live or online- and off the farm private treaty offerings. Determining which pigs you will want to offer in the online sale will help you narrow your focus and work on the presentation of those babies for pictures and farm visitors. The Showpig.com team is staffed and ready to help you with your sale promotion needs for both print ads and online marketing.

of time to contact you with questions and start working with you on delivery options. Becoming increasingly popular for buyers to view are videos of the individual pigs. We know picture taking and videoing can be time consuming depending on the size of your sale and the temperament of the sale pigs. It is best to try to set aside plenty of time to be efficient while capturing the right angles. Your auction manger will be a valuable resource for teaching you how to properly upload lot info, pictures and videos.

You’ll want to make sure you are available for phone calls, text messages and questions from potential customers. Be prompt in returning voicemails or missed calls and texts. Your auction manger will be available to assist you with any questions you might have. Be in a position to watch the sale either on your phone or computer and bid if necessary. Immediately following the sale you will be provided with a buyer information email and all the invoices and settlements can be view with your admin login.

Step 5 – POST SALE
With the help of the showpig.com team, you’ll want to communicate with all your buyers and confirm payments have been made prior to pick up or delivery. You’ll want to check in with each buyer on what their preferred delivery option will be after the sale. Once all pigs are paid for, you will receive a settlement check or ACH direct deposit for your sale funds. Make a point to transfer registration papers on purebreds as quickly as possible and be sure to touch base with your buyers regarding their purchases. Sellers that communicate well and follow up with buyers have the greatest chance to make a new customer into a returning customer!

Farm S.M.A.R.T. Tips Secure – Monitor – Alert – Research – Take Action
As the U.S. pork industry navigates the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Pork Board is providing the following Farm S.M.A.R.T. tips to help you secure your farm sites. These guidelines are a collection of best practices to ensure you, your pigs and your facilities remain protected from issues that may arise during this time.

Secure It is more important than ever to secure your operation and maintain recommended safety measures.
■
■
■
■
Monitor
■
Vigilance is key to ensuring the safety of your facilities. Consider the following ideas for monitoring activities both on and offline.
■
■
Establish check-in and check-out procedures for visitors at your farm, including a visitor sign-in/out log book. Ensure all employees and family members know the steps to follow if an uninvited visitor shows up.
■
■
Use visitor identification badges – even the stick-on kind is better than no visitor identification. This protects your visitor, as well as your operation. Escort visitors at all times while they are at your farm. Employees should be instructed to report all unescorted visitors to the appropriate personnel immediately.
Keep animal sick pens, as well as euthanasia and disposal, separate and covered or closed off from the rest of the herd and regular farm movement/traffic. Consider assigning an existing trusted employee or hiring an outside firm to provide security. Even having someone assigned to walk the perimeter and check building access/occupancy at unpredictable times can make it more challenging for trespassers to go unnoticed.
Maintain basic security: Remember to lock buildings, offices and cabinets. Ensure proper lighting, alarms and cameras are installed. Post signs for restricted areas. Furthermore, shred any confidential documents and be aware of trash disposal.
Watch for red flags, such as employees coming to work unusually early or staying late and going into areas not required for their job. Remind your employees to bring any concerns about strange or out-of-character actions to the proper individuals on your farm. Keep an open door policy and take employee concerns seriously. Use trusted, seasoned employees to be your “eyes and ears” for anything unusual and have them report suspicious behavior to you or the appropriate security person immediately.
■
■
■
Establish your web and social media presence. Make sure you have claimed URLs and social handles related to and including your farm’s name on every web and social media channel possible, even if you do not plan to use them. Monitor the web and social media in your local area and closest metro area for possible threats, plans to protest or other activities. Also, use your industry network and state pork association to stay up to date on the latest and notify colleagues of any threats you uncover. Report all suspicious and/or illegal incidents to the proper authorities.
Alert Make sure you have a good relationship with your local police and fire departments as well as the county sheriff’s office and state patrol, so you know who to contact in an emergency. Alert them, even if you suspect an increased likelihood of unwelcome visitors looking to gain unauthorized access to your operation. Proactive discussions can make a considerable difference if you require assistance.
■
■
■
■
Research Now, more than ever, it is important to do your research to keep yourself and your business safe. Whether you are hiring new employees or looking to better understand your legal rights, make sure you have the critical information to safely operate.
■
■
■
■
■
110
Crisis planning is essential for any business owner. See the Farm Crisis Operations Planning Tool from the National Pork Board, available at www. pork.org/covid19, to walk through the recommended actions for your operation. Find out what law enforcement would recommends doing if you have an issue. Also, identify who to contact directly if an incident occurs and what steps you can take to protect your property before officers arrive. Reach out and share your concerns with local law enforcement, citing any similar issues occurring at other local businesses. A strong background in the potential challenge will help officers understand how these activities may play out on farms, at plants and in stores and help them make recommendations or when needed, take action.
■
■
■
Ask for advice on how you can proactively protect yourself, your operation and your animals from illegal activity, including unauthorized visitors. This might mean posting “no trespassing” signs and installing security cameras, gates and/ or locks.
Have a carefully structured employment application tailored to your business and the position. Require applicants to sign the application when complete. Be familiar and comply with the most up-to-date Department of Labor guidance protecting applicants from discrimination. Your application should ask for consent to do a background check prior to administration. Consider hiring a third-party firm specializing in screening employment applications. Check the references of applicants and complete a comprehensive Google search as well as a social media scan. Consider adding your business mission to your application and asking applicants to verify there is nothing that would prevent them from fulfilling their duties to reach that mission. If something doesn’t seem right, explore it further. Be vigilant in the process, even if you need to hire someone quickly.
Learn local ordinances to understand what rights you have as a property owner. State pork associations are a good resource and can help you determine the most appropriate contacts for different services in your county. If an unapproved visitor or photographer is on your property, politely ask them to leave. Remember to remain calm. You do not want an angry outburst to be recorded and later used out of context. If trespassers refuse to leave, contact local law enforcement and notify your state pork association as well as the National Pork Board. Keep your eyes on the sky and roads. Unauthorized video of your operation could be captured by drone or via long-range lens from a car parked on the side of the road. If you see a drone or suspicious vehicle, call local law enforcement and notify your state pork association as well as the National Pork Board.
Doing your homework on every applicant may be time consuming up front, but it can ultimately save you time and trouble in the long run. ■
Know your property rights and local legislation that prevents videos and photography from being taken on your farm, particularly without your consent.
Take Action It can be hard to step back from your day-to-day operations during normal times, and spare time is an especially rare commodity right now. However, any effort made today to take small steps toward better securing your operation will pay dividends down the road.
Consider asking a trusted employee or a family member to serve as your Farm S.M.A.R.T. ambassador and take responsibility for applying the tips above to your business. It also can help to go through the list and eliminate actions you already have taken – give yourself credit for some early wins! Then schedule 15 to 30 minutes each day to start chipping away at the additional actions you want to take.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the National Pork Board Service Center at 1-800-456-7675 or pork.org/about/contact. Additionally, the Animal Agriculture Alliance is a good resource and helped inform many of the tips above. Visit www.animalagalliance.com to access additional resources and sign up for their newsletter.

Pigs, People and Viruses
What COVID-19 Can Teach Us About Swine Health & Biosecurity Information obtained from TPPA Webinar Series by Jeff Wiegert, Swine Extension Specialist.
Explore the parallels of the measures we as humans have taken during the pandemic and relate them back to your farm’s biosecurity practices.
Covid-19
Farm practices
the world can be a scary place
• Stay at home • Avoid high risk areas • Avoid symptomatic people
• Limit the number of visitors to the farm • Enforce mandatory pig-free downtime
if you’ve been out and about...
• Quarantine if exposed or believed to have been exposed to the virus • 14 day minimum
• Isolate every pig entering the farm for any reason. Includes pigs that have left and are returning • Tend to those pigs last
Dilution is part of the solution
• Wash hands frequently •Sanitize physical objects
• Disinfect all physical objects that come onto the farm. Trucks, trailers, equipment, boots, etc.
Not feeling well?
• Get tested if you are feeling ill or you have been exposed
• Develop a vet-client patient relationship
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure
• Vaccination will likely be necessary to stop COVID-19
112
• Vaccination • Pre-breeding • Pre-farrowing • Consult with a vet for a vaccination program • Recommend a good vet client patient relationship

No Oven Summer Can’t Take the Heat?
Grill Out of the Kitchen!
Think of the grill as summer’s best kept secret. Why turn on your oven when you can grill delicious pork — and everything else you want to enjoy — this summer away from your kitchen! From apricots to zucchini and everything in between, you and your grill can create balanced and delicious summer meals.
Appetizers Quick bites off the grill start any gathering or meal off right ... or can double as the meal themselves.
A delicious idea to expand your grilling expertise — Grilled Guacamole with Bacon! Creamy avocados, smoky bacon and just the right touch of spice are a perfect way to start any meal or gathering. Skewers/Kabobs: Grill just a few pieces for an appetizer or add vegetables and more pieces for an entrée. These handheld bites are summer on a stick. Flatbread/Pizza: Who needs a pizzeria when you have a grill? Smaller individual pizzas enable delicious customization, and full-size pizzas are great for sharing.
147
Salads and Side Dishes
The grill brings out the best of summer’s bounty. These simple tips will keep your kitchen clean and your taste buds happy. Key to success is cooking, which adds the perfect amount of delicious flavor and color.
INDIRECT
Use the good oil: Fruits and vegetables need oil to prevent sticking and burning. Neutral oils like canola oil will do the job fine, but extra-virgin olive oil provides additional flavor. Brush on just enough to coat each side thoroughly but not so much that the fruit/vegetable would drip oil and cause flare-ups. Season the vegetables with salt and pepper (some of it will fall off). For more flavors, marinate the vegetables at room temperature for 20 minutes to an hour in olive oil, vinegar, garlic, herbs and spices.
Better in a basket: Small fruits like berries and slender vegetables like asparagus and beans will likely fall through grill grates and cook much better in a small grill basket or in a foil packet.
Grill what’s growing at the time: Vegetables and fruits in season are riper, so they taste better. That means you can grill them simply with great results.
Determining doneness: Firm vegetables, such as onions and fennel, are often grilled somewhere between crisp and tender. The grill intensifies the sweetness of vegetables quickly, and that can lead to burning. Follow these simple guidelines from Weber Grills for perfectly grilled fruit. Timing varies due to sugar content and density.
Expose as much surface area as possible: Cut fruits and vegetables to give you the biggest area to put in direct contact with the cooking grates. The more direct contact, the better the flavors will be.
Going green: Yes, you can grill your salad. Romaine is a very hearty green that can stand the heat and delivers a smoky flavor. Split lengthwise, brush with oil, season with salt and pepper and grill cut side down. Grill 5 minutes or until slightly wilted.
Finish with flair: Add a squeeze of lemon to greens and vegetables or a drizzle of honey to fruits for the perfect finishing touch.
Dessert
Savor the sweetness of summer from the grill. Grilled fruits: A mixture of grilled fruits by themselves, over ice cream or with a simple sprinkle of fresh herb is a simple, colorful way to enjoy a dessert. Your oven double … the grill: Did you know that your favorite baked dessert can also be made on the grill without ANY adaptions to the recipe, cook time or temperature? Use indirect cooking, rotating the pan halfway through cooking.
Don’t Forget the Pork! All pork cuts are delicious off the grill! Try a delicious new recipe from our collection on Yummly.com, season with confidence and follow pork cooking temperature guidelines for a safe, delicious meal!

Tips for Successfully Smoking Pork A Smoking Overview
Outdoor cooking season is upon us, which brings about dreams of delicious, smoky-flavored food. Thankfully, that craveable, smoky flavor can be achieved many ways — no special equipment required! Smoking meat can be done on a charcoal grill, on a gas grill and even indoors. Hot Smoking There are many ways to smoke meat, but the most typical is the “hot smoking” method. In hot smoking, the food is exposed to both:
HEAT
SMOKE
&
in a controlled environment. Depending on the type of food you are cooking, the temperature and time will differ (see below for details). To add flavor, the meat is typically seasoned with a rub of:
SALT
SUGAR
VARIOUS HERBS & SPICES
Because of its tenderness, smoked pork can be served: SHREDDED
SLICED
152
Because of the cooking method, hot smoked pork can be served immediately.
“PULLED” when it is often simmered in sauced.
Tips for Successfully Smoking Pork PREPARATION FOR SMOKING MEAT 1.Pick and prep your meat. When it comes to smoking meat, there many great pork choices. The best cuts of pork to smoke include:
PORK BUTT
PORK CHOPS
PORK RIBS
PORK SHOULDER
The next key step is creating flavor, which can be done through either a dry rub or a marinade. Dry rubs typically contain a color base, a sweetener base, a flavor base, a heat base and a salt base. Color bases include turmeric, different types of paprika, curry powder or beet powder. MARINADE
Sweetener bases include all kinds of sugars, including white cane, turbinado, brown, corn, maple, date, demerara or coconut. Flavor bases are only limited by your imagination. From A (anise, allspice) to Z (zests of oranges and limes) and everything in between! Heat bases come from a wide variety of different kinds of chile powders, but also include ginger, horseradish and mustard.
DRY RUB
Salt bases can be either seasoned (e.g., onion or garlic) or have a different crystal structure (sea, kosher) or color (red, pink, black).
Some recommendations from our chefs include: Smoky Rub, Smoked Pork Roast, Carolina-Style Pulled Pork Shoulder, Mexican Dry Rub.
2. Pick your wood. Like fine wine, there are some woods that go better with certain meats. Aromatics, such as herbs, fruit peels or cinnamon sticks, also can be added to produce even more flavor. Aromatics with high oil content, like rosemary, will produce a stronger flavor. ALDER
Smooth, delicate, slightly sweet, woodsy flavor
APPLE
Light sweet, delicate and fruity flavor
MAPLE
Sweet, subtle flavor
CHERRY
Fairly sweet and fruity
SUGAR MAPLE Sweet, delicate flavor
OAK
HAZLENUT Nutty, sweet flavor

HICKORY
Sweet to strong with heavy bacon flavor
BIRCH
Gives off clean smoke, has an oily bark
PECAN

GUAVA

153
Tips for Successfully Smoking Pork Wood also comes in several different formats; which one is best for your needs will depend on your type of grill and overall cook time. WOOD CHUNKS Wood chunks burn more slowly than chips. Often a chunk or two, about the size of an egg or weighing two to four ounces, is all that is necessary. Chunks are a slow, steady source of smoke, and are in many ways the most desirable for smoking. WOOD CHIPS Wood chips are about the size of coins and generally easy to find. They burn quickly and you may find that you need to add them more than once during the cooking cycle. Chips work well for products that have short smoking periods (see chart on next page), but for cuts that require longer smoking times, chunks are better. Wood chips will begin to smoke more quickly than wood chunks so choose accordingly. PELLETS Pellets are made by compressing wet sawdust into small rods, about a half an inch long. Food-grade pellets contain no binders, glue or adhesives, and when they get wet, they revert to sawdust immediately. Some smokers use pellets as the main fuel. For both flavor and heat, pellets do well in competition barbeque because they can be fed into the fire in a very controlled manner, usually by an auger. Pellet cookers can be regulated with a thermostat, making them very controllable. They also burn very hot and clean. 3. Prep your smoking method.
SMOKING PACKET
Making a smoker packet is simple. Take a square of heavy-duty aluminum foil and put a fist full of wood chips in the center. Completely close the foil around the chips and then poke a few holes in the top with a fork to allow the smoke to escape the packet.
SMOKER BOXES
If you are a big-time smoker, you may want to invest in a smoker box. There are variety of smoker boxes, grilling chambers aluminum smoker packets and more.
Do you want to soak your wood chips? It’s a hotly contested topic on whether or not to soak wood chips — in wine, beer or water — before using. Wet wood takes longer to smoke. If you put chips in a pan of water, you’ll see steam before you see any smoke. If you are worried about chips catching on fire when you add them directly to the grill, make a smoke packet by wrapping the wood in foil and poking holes in the foil or switch to chunks. If you are smoking a pork shoulder or ribs, which will take several hours, a good rule of thumb is to add a new smoker pack with a handful of wood every 30 minutes. You can also add wood chips directly to any TRU-Infrared grill. Two to three handfuls of wood chips will smoke for about an hour. 154
Tips for Successfully Smoking Pork 4. Follow the cooking guidelines. How long you smoke pork will depend on the specific cut and the thickness of that cut. Consult this chart to determine the cooking time. Use a digital meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. Once your meat reaches the proper internal temperature, or close to that, you’re ready to pull it off the grill. Let it rest, and then serve! Below is a chart on pork cooking temperatures to keep handy during your cooking: PORK CUT
TOTAL COOK TIME*

250°F
225°F
Grill mark the chops prior to smoking, smoke until the internal temperature of 140°F is reached, let rest for 10 minutes until an internal temperature of 145°F is reached. Cook to an internal temperature of 190°F or until meat is fork-tender when pierced by a skewer.
The USDA recommends cooking chops, roasts, loins, and tenderloin to an internal temperature of 145°F, followed by a three-minute rest. Ground pork should always be cooked to 160°F. Doneness for some pork cuts, such as small cuts that are difficult to test with a thermometer or large cuts that cook slowly at low temperatures, is designated as “tender.” Pre-cooked ham can be reheated to 140°F or even enjoyed cold, while fresh ham should be cooked to 145°F.
Food Safety Tips: • When marinating or brining the meat, this process should take place in the refrigerator. • If partially cooked meat is to be smoked, the smoking needs to take place right after the cooking.

Tips for Successfully Smoking Pork
SMOKING PORK
The same trusty grill you use to grill meats can be used to smoke meats as well. Gas or charcoal — both are great options! How To Smoke Meat on a Gas Grill
How To Smoke Meat on a Charcoal Grill
Some of today’s gas grills come equipped with a metal smoker box that sits on top of a dedicated burner. Just turn on the burner and add as many damp wood chips as you like. You can control how quickly they smoke by turning the knob of the burner higher or lower. Some of the boxes have a separate compartment for water, which will provide a steaming effect on the food, too. After you have prepped your meat, here’s how to get the good stuff ready. 1. Get your grill ready. To preheat the grill, turn one side of your grill to high and leave the other off. Place the wood chips on the hot side. When they begin to smoke, turn the burners down to low then place the meat on the unlit side of the grill. Follow the temperature guidance detailed above. You can measure the heat of the grill surface with a digital probe thermometer. 2. Cook your meat. Place the meat on the cool side of the grill. Only open the lid to add more wood chips. You also will extend the cooking time every time you remove the cover. Refer to the temperature chart above for more guidance.
1. Select your coals. A chimney starter makes all the difference. It will reduce the amount of time it takes to get your charcoal burning. 2. Set up two zones. Arrange the coals for indirect cooking — you’ll want one side of the grill to be cooler than the other. Simply pour the coals on one half of the grill and leave the other half empty. Place your smoker box or packet over the coals. 3. Control the temperature. Your charcoal grill comes equipped with vents that allow you to regulate the temperature inside the grill. You want to maintain the desired temperature detailed in the chart above. The bottom vent is like your control panel. If the temperature drops too much, open it more. If it’s too hot, close it. Keep a frequent check on the temperature. If you’re cooking something that takes several hours, expect to add more charcoal. 4. Cook your meat. Place the meat on the cool side of the grill so it cooks “low and slow.” Only open the lid to add more wood chips or charcoal. You also will extend the cooking time every time you remove the cover.
Indoor Options If you are craving the flavor of a smoked meat but are unable to use outdoor methods, liquid smoke can be added to help deliver smoked flavor! Slow cookers and instant pots are great indoor options to achieve the smoked-to-perfection flavor. We have several recipes that we recommend — check them out!

Committing to Consumers – Today and Every Day One of my favorite analogies about life is one I often tell through bacon. I’ve worked with a lot of agricultural organizations during my career, and when discussing how people engage with these groups I show a picture of a pretty typical breakfast meal: eggs and bacon (although bacon is really an any time of day food!). With that image in front of everyone, we talk about the different ways people volunteer and engage with agricultural and community groups. They can sometimes be viewed as eggs or bacon. The point I make isn’t about the food – it’s about the animals involved in providing it. The chicken was involved… but the pig was committed! While I use this image and story to start a conversation about the varying levels of engagement needed to keep our agricultural groups going and growing, the truth is if you’re a food producer today, you’re committed – even when in the midst of a global pandemic. Here in Texas and around the world, most farmers, ranchers, and agri-professionals will tell you that their daily chores and efforts haven’t actually changed much since March. When you are in an industry that requires you to provide constant nurturing and care, work doesn’t stop when the rest of society has to slow down. But we are quickly reminded that beyond the farm gate there are a lot of changes and hiccups that have an impact on the families and businesses committed to raising pigs and producing pork. At the Texas Department of Agriculture, we know you are working through these challenges and looking for new ways to promote, support, and sell pork. We also recognize that in the span of just a few months how consumers purchase pork products has shifted. So, we challenged ourselves to get creative about how we can connect Texas agribusinesses – from farms and ranches selling directly to the public to value-added companies across the full spectrum of the agriculture industry – to customers who are looking for local ways to shop and engage.
158
That challenge spurred us to start the “Direct From Texas” initiative. As more people turn to digital resources to find what is available around them, we wanted to provide platforms that make it easy for customers to connect directly with local farms and businesses providing food, beverages, plants/landscaping materials, and other agricultural products. On the Department’s GO TEXAN website (gotexan.org), you can find a link that reads “Support Local Farmers and Ranchers.” The goal is to help make it easier for Texans to find local farms and foods they can get directly from Texas farmers and ranchers. If your operation can sell directly to consumers, this is a place where we can provide your contact information and product details to get you a little more exposure. And since we’re all consumers, the directory is also a great way to find some new favorite places to shop ourselves! Expanding on the idea behind the website, we created a Facebook group called Direct From Texas. This group is a space where Texas farms, ranches, and agribusinesses can promote their products and services while also giving consumers the ability to go online and ask about specific products or find producers in a certain region of Texas. This free service is a great way to start direct connections and conversations between food producers and our non-ag eaters! In addition to these two online tools, we continue our efforts to promote the GO TEXAN program and encourage consumers to look for the GO TEXAN mark when shopping so they can support their neighbors in the agriculture and food industry. There is no doubt the first half of 2020 brought about a lot of changes to our lives. But it is equally clear that all our amazing Texas farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses remain as committed to this great industry as ever! Kyle Real The Herdsman
Senior at Krum High School Owner of Real Livestock Raises commercial cattle; Shows pigs & steers Officer of the Krum FFA Chapter and the Denton County Agricultural Leadership 4-H Club, Livestock Ambassador Member of the state qualifying livestock and meats judging teams; High Individual ‘19 state livestock judging contest; State FFA qualifying ag issues forum; participates in ag mechanics. State finalist for numerous star awards; State qualifier in the FFA Swine Production Proficiency; Lone Star degree recipient; National Honor Society member; Top 10% of his class. Most memorable experience: Driving the Reserve Champion Berkshire barrow at Houston Livestock Show. Best advice received: Keep pushing because you learn more from your mistakes than you do your success. Favorite quote: “When you’re at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on.” - Teddy Roosevelt “My first showing experience was when I was two so it’s hard to remember, but i am told that it was more of a comedy show than a hog show. My mom put a bow on my pigs tail so I would know which one it was and then I chased it around the ring.” 168
Third generation pig farmers. Owners of a Berkshire meat program. Members of 4-H and FFA. Highly involved high school students. Siblings. Bright young minds that are passionate about making a difference in the industry. All of these statements are just a few ways to describe Kyle and Grace Real. As a family, they own and operate Real Livestock as well as ER Bar Family Pork. Kyle and Grace are the son and daughter of Daryl and Sue Real; they also have two more siblings, Campbell and Prestynne.
I
t’s easy to recognize that Kyle’s biggest influence is his grandfather, Chuck Real. Much like his Opa, the pigs come first; they are Kyle’s main focus. While the entire family works together on various aspects of their livestock operation in Krum, he considers himself the brains behind the operation...with some assistance from Daryl, of course. Kyle is primarily responsible for taking care of the sows, whether that’s breeding, farrowing or just everyday chores. The young man points to his grandfather when discussing where his drive and interest comes from. “Opa has been raising hogs for over 50 years. He started when he was my age and continued ever since. That’s what I hope to do as well. He has raised and sold breeding stock, show pigs, butcher hogs and even

research pigs. I have learned so much from him.” Kyle tries to spend as much time as possible at his grandparents’ farm in Marion, not just to eat Omi’s cooking, but really to work with Opa and learn as much as he can from him. “I get to spend some time each summer there where I continue to learn and pick up knowledge. During the holidays, even if being there a day, I want to be in the hog barns. I really enjoy every opportunity I get down south.” Anyone who has been around Chuck for a few minutes has undoubtedly heard a joke or story, or maybe a dozen. Kyle is well on his way of following in those footsteps as he recalls one of his own comical experiences. “Around the time I first started breeding sows when I was about 10 years old, I went to dinner with my grandmother, who is hard of hearing, one evening. I was sitting on the other end of a long table at the restaurant and she asked what I had done that day. When I told her that I got semen in the mail, she couldn’t hear me, so I yelled it out. At that point, everyone in the restaurant turned to our table and got dead silent!” Fortunately, Kyle has been able to leverage the experience and knowledge of his Opa and dad. Having them certainly has helped because it has given him extra

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. -God (Psalm 23:1-3) I can’t live without… my loving and supportive parents who would go to the end of the Earth to make me happy. At stock shows, it seems… that a child is always hanging out with me. I have been dubbed the “little person whisperer.” If I could do anything... insight to what he needs to do for so many situations and challenges they’ve encountered over the years. For instance, getting gilts and sows bred early on was a challenge, but learning about heat cycles, semen quality and just being able to visit about different situations they have faces has allowed him to overcome the problem. “Without Opa and Dad we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. But I’m not going to lie, it also has put a little pressure on us to do well because I do not want to let them down especially after all the time they’ve spent with us on our projects.” Grace is responsible for their Berkshire meat program, ER Bar Family Pork, serving their community with great tasting, high quality, local pork. The meat program actually serves as Grace’s Supervised Agricultural Experience project (SAE) through FFA, It’s not every day that a 15 year old can say they successfully own and operate their own company. “ER Bar Family Pork is our Berkshire Pork operation that I focus more of my time on. The business began when my older brother, who sells Berkshire show pigs, was simply feeding out the hogs he did not sell and trading them with a local
170
harvesting plant at a reduced price. I saw a business opportunity through this and had the resources readily available at my fingertips; thus my business began. I procure hogs from my brother at a reduced cost and have them processed at Fischer’s Meat Market in Muenster, which is a USDA inspected and approved facility. I then market and sell the retail cuts as locally sourced, quality Berkshire Pork.” Selling everything but the oink, ER Bar Family Pork offers; shoulder roast, bacon, spare ribs, whole hams, ham steaks, pork chops all kinds of sausage and also take custom orders on whole or half hogs. Grace says, “We have all the Berkshire pork to ‘MEAT’ your needs!” Grace primarily utilizes Facebook to market ER Bar Family Pork, but word of mouth from repeat customers has been very positive, in addition to setting up a booth at several fair-type events. Just in the past year alone, Grace has sold product on fifteen butcher hogs. The most sought-after cuts of their delicious Berkshire pork are chops, bacon and fully-cooked German link sausage. With strong demand, Grace has goals to expand the business but definitely wants to keep the “local” business feel to it.

The Real family shares a passion for showing competitive barrows and gilts all across the state and nation, and the two eldest Real kids both are quick to say what they enjoy most is this ability to do what they love with their family and friends. Grace explains, “Through showing you gain an experience like no other, one that teaches hard work, discipline, and humility which are truly an everyday skill set necessary for being successful in the real world.” She has been able to build many new friendships and relationships through being a showman and wouldn’t trade those experiences for the world! She credits that showing hogs has given her a glimpse into real life experiences, including conflicts and their resolutions. “Whether I bring home a blue ribbon, banner, and belt buckle or nothing at all, I will never forget the lessons and knowledge the show ring has taught me and the experiences I had that helped get me there.” For the stockman in Kyle, he brings up an additional point. “What I love most about shows is the opportunity to not only socialize with other youth and breeders, but to also look at good stock with my dad and Opa. The time we spend evaluating other pigs and discussing genetics is awesome; we talk about what we need to do different for our own breeding program or what we have done well in so far.” And that has proved beneficial because in the short time of Real Livestock, there have been some big accomplishments that Kyle and the whole family is very proud of! Like in most households, there is the friendly competition known as sibling rivalry. “The most memorable experience I have had in the show ring occurred about five years ago. I was showing my favorite Duroc gilt at the Krum International Showmanship Show, where I was put in the intermediate division for the first time against my brother. I had worked hard with my hog so that we did not look like fools who belonged in the junior division. She walked into the show ring
172
like a champion, her head up, her strides elongated and smooth. I had an intense look on my face like I was going to win, thinking only about how to position myself and the hog to look better. I got penned alongside two of my friends and my brother. We quickly brushed and sprayed our hogs, making them look as perfect as possible. As the judge finished dismissing the other, un-penned showmen, I rose to see the judge walking towards my pen for questions. After all the showmen were asked questions, we were asked to come out of our pens one by one. Finally, the judge picks up the microphone and announces my best friend as third place. As I tell her how proud I am of her, I refocus when the judge says that it came down to my brother and me. He announced me as the winner and in that moment, I knew that all the work really pays off! Being involved in production agriculture and one of their favorite accompanying activities of livestock judging, has taught them not only about where their food comes from and the responsibility agriculturalists hold, but it has also taught them many life skills, challenged them to use simple logic, and make quick decisions which they believe will be the most helpful down the road. This way of life is not just something to do for now. Kyle fully plans to keep a few sows and cows around even while in college, just like his Opa did so many years ago. The goal is to grow the herd to eventually make it a profitable entity that provides for his family one day. Kyle also plans to follow in his Opa and dad’s footsteps of judging livestock while in college, while both he and Grace hope to continue the proud family tradition of becoming fightin’ Texas Aggies! They both plan to continue serving the agricultural industry, and providing for those around them, whether with showpigs or locally grown Berkshire pork. These two are sure to make a lasting impact on this industry, and we here at TPPA cannot wait to watch them continue to achieve their goals in all their future endeavors.
We wish Kyle and Grace the best of luck this year on the farm, in the cooler and in the show ring!!
