This summer, the Bronx Science Foundation hosted nine of its signature Summer Institutes. These annual free summer enrichment programs offer Bronx Science students unique opportunities to explore a variety of interests and careers, meet with alumni thriving in their industry, and experience different professional environments and expectations. They also provide space and time for students to deep dive into an interest or passion. Most importantly: the Summer Institutes broaden students’ understanding of the wide array of academic and career paths that are available to pursue. With a Bronx Science education and commitment to excellence, there are limitless possibilities in store for our students. 01

Research Summer Institute Hosted at at Hostedon oncampus campus The ’52’52 Research The Stanley StanleyManne Manne Institute Research Institute Led by the Foundation’s Research Fellow, Dr. Aaron Schwartz

22

72 students from Bronx Science and our partner schools participated in unique hands-on research programming. 35 first-time participants took part in a two-week research crash course teaching them the relevant skills and techniques to carry out an independent project at the Manne Institute. This included in-depth microscopy analysis, micro-pipetting, basic lab-chemistry skills, an intro to microbiology techniques (like growing bacterial cell cultures), and methods of growing the model organism C. elegans. 37 returning students, with previous lab experience, immediately began working independently.

Stephanie Zheng ’29

“

I was able to expand my horizons and learn so many new things I would have never learned otherwise. Looking forward, the hands-on experience and critical thinking skills I gained will be invaluable to my future and career goals. This program has given me a real taste of what it means to be a researcher.” Stephanie Zheng ’29,

Research Summer Institute

Every student designed and conducted an independent project that applied the skills learned in our research curriculum. Just a few research themes included neuroscience and neurodegeneration; the effect of diet on gut health; how oxidative stress impacts cell homeostasis; and molecular tool building and engineering.

Thair Morgan ’28

Robotics Institute Hosted at Bronx Science Over four weeks at Bronx Science, students worked with advanced equipment to learn more about engineering and programming as they designed and built their own robot.

24

Students collaborated to: •

Build a foundation in the coding language Java needed to control the robotics during competition

•

Study computer-aided design (CAD) software design using Onshape

•

Learn the foundations of control theory, machining, and assembly, including construction, electrical wiring and motors

•

Use their new skillset and equipment to build from scratch a basketball dunking robot that can extend up to 10 feet.

•

Write a working drivetrain program and program every mechanism on last season’s competition robot, successfully making it function the same as it did last season.

Most participants began the program with almost no experience—but concluded with aspirations to continue their learning by joining one of Bronx Science’s robotics team.

“

I really enjoyed my time at the robotics summer institute. The community of mentors and peers were so welcoming and willing to assist me whenever I had questions. My favorite moment was definitely getting to learn about the different functions of robot parts.” Santiago Qinlin ’28, Robotics Institute
