Welcome Bromsgrove is an outstanding School and a very special place, however it would not exist without the generosity and vision of its benefactors. Over the centuries, philanthropic gifts have supported our pupils, endowed our Scholars and provided our buildings.

We are rich in talent and achievement but our endowed funds are minimal and we need help to secure investment for current and future generations. Since its Royal Foundation in 1553, Bromsgrove continues to prosper as it builds its future in a world of unprecedented change. With the support and good counsel of our benefactors today, we will advance the School’s historical strengths and draw upon its enormous potential for the future.

our history Bromsgrove is one of Britain’s oldest public schools. An ancient chantry school founded in the Middle Ages, the Royal Foundation dates back to 1553, when King Edward VI endowed the School with £7 per annum for the “free education of 12 boys – to be taught, clothed and afterwards apprenticed to some suitable trade.”

In 1623, Sir Thomas Cookes, a wealthy benefactor re-founded the School and liberally endowed it with £50 per year. At the same time, he founded Worcester College, Oxford and both School and College still share the same distinguished coat of arms.

The Bromsgrovian publication in 1882 publicly thanks “The Patron, the Bishop, the Parents, the Masters, Old Bromsgrovians, the Gentry of Bromsgrove and neighbourhood, the School Tradesmen, and other generous friends” for their donations towards an ambitious fundraising campaign to raise £1,500 for new buildings. At that time, the School had just 12 Foundation Scholars and 78 boarders.

Bromsgrove today 450 years after its Royal Foundation, Bromsgrove continues to prosper and is regarded as one of Britain’s greatest schools.

Our examination results place us in the top ten of coeducational day/boarding schools in the United Kingdom and the UK Government has officially rated both the Senior and the Preparatory Schools as “outstanding”.

We are a leading school because we are progressive and innovative. Prudent management of our resources has enabled us to invest tens of millions of pounds to develop our facilities and provide financial support for pupils. Since 1994, we have completed seven major new building and refurbishment projects for Art, Design & Technology, Library and Resources, Humanities, Science and three boarding Houses; Elmshurst, Housman Hall and Wendron-Gordon.

We currently award around 36 scholarships and provide £1 million annually in bursaries to deserving families who could not otherwise afford the fees, and we continue to maintain 12 Foundation Scholars.

Although the majority of pupils are British, we attract young people from all over the world, bringing to the School a stimulating range of views, attitudes, traditions and experiences. We are currently home to over 40 different nationalities – when our pupils leave, they make a global contribution and help to shape our world. We now have three constituencies; the Pre-Preparatory School (over 200 pupils aged 2-7), a Preparatory School (500 pupils aged 7-13) and the Senior School (900 pupils aged 13-18). Bromsgrove International School Thailand opened in 2005, demonstrating that while the School may have physical boundaries, its aspirations to promote first rate education are limitless.

How you can support Bromsgrove Scholarships and Bursaries – investing in talent A key to our success has been the diversity of the children we have attracted. When they come here they find an inspiring community of many talents, drawn from different cultures, countries and social backgrounds.

Our mission is to attract the best pupils from the UK and across the world by being able to provide financial assistance to the brightest and best, and to enable them to come here regardless of their ability to pay. Some may be children or grandchildren of Old Bromsgrovians and others will be new to the School. We also work with a number of charities in the UK and overseas. They help us to identify children who are genuinely in need and determined to succeed against all odds. The presence of these excellent and committed boys and girls enhances the life of the School and ensures that our community continues to be a broad society, which is the best preparation for adult life.

We currently award scholarships for excellence in academic subjects, music, art and sport but they carry little or no financial assistance. We need to be able to provide bursary support worth up to the full value of the fees. Some families may only need a little help and others may need total fee support. Means tested bursaries are fair because they ensure that fee reductions are given to those who really need it, and every application is assessed individually to ascertain the level of support needed.

Bromsgrove School Foundation For the first time in our history, Bromsgrove will provide £1 million in bursary support during 2011, however the vast majority of the funds have come from the income generated by fees, which are really needed to fund staffing costs and the maintenance of our facilities. We are therefore asking all those who care about Bromsgrove and its future to make a gift through the Foundation so that we can build funds to support bursaries. The Foundation was established in 2007 for this purpose. There are two options for giving: an investment gift to the Endowment Fund will produce a permanent source of income and secure our ability to attract the very best pupils in perpetuity. A donor can also choose to support a child through School over a number of years until the funds are spent.

Our aim is to fund the £1 million per annum needed for bursaries. This is a bold endeavour but the rewards will be great. At the time of writing, the total endowment funds for bursaries is £716,000. An endowment of £15 million would provide an annual income of £600,000, with non-endowment gifts making up the remaining £400,000 to reach the target.

Or an endowment of £25 million would fund all bursaries in perpetuity.

But this is more than compensated by being able to experience his development from boy to man in a well-organized, caring school environment with special people where his capabilities are strongly supported. 1553 Scholars Pupils who are sponsored by donation will be named 1553 Scholars. Donors can choose to support a child with a specific talent in academic subjects, music, art or sport, over a two year period (Sixth Form); over five years (Senior School); or over eleven years (from Preparatory School). A preference to support a day pupil, a UK boarder or an overseas border will also be respected. We will provide annual feedback to donors who support 1553 Scholars. Many naming opportunities are available, for example, creating a named family Fund for a 1553 Scholars. We welcome both individual and collective donations to make the funding of specific pupils possible.

Groups of donations may come from year groups, House groups, country groups, families or just between friends.

Much has changed - new and improved facilities, the introduction of the International Baccalaureate, and a more modern feel throughout the School - and yet many traditions and the feel of the place remain the same. Cost breakdown The current annual cost of supporting one day pupil at Bromsgrove Senior School is just under £13,000. The total required to support one full Sixth Form bursary over two years would therefore be £26,000 and over five years £65,000. For endowment purposes, £325,000 would fund one full bursary in perpetuity (only the income from the endowment would be used to fund the annual fee).

The current annual cost of supporting one overseas boarder is just over £28,000. The total required to support one full Sixth Form bursary over two years would therefore be £56,000 and over five years £140,000. For endowment purposes, £700,000 would fund one full bursary in perpetuity. (Figures based on 2011-12 fees) Donors who have given (or pledged over a number of years) £20,000 and over, will be invited to the Board of Benefactors and their names will be recorded on a special commemorative board in the new Hospitality Suite. Bromsgrove’s most significant supporters may be invited by the Chairman of Governors to become members of the prestigious Court of Benefactors. All donors will be listed in the annual Governors Report, equally, all requests for anonymity will be respected.

other ways you can support Bromsgrove Houses and learning facilities Bromsgrove invites support towards the next most exciting chapter in our history, representing the most extensive development ever witnessed on the Senior campus. State of the art sport, boarding and hospitality facilities will put Bromsgrove at the top of the premier league for facilities.

These magnificent new buildings will stand proud near a brand new entrance, gate house and car park, realigned for access from an elegant, straight approach road, and a large especially commissioned sculpture that will alter radically the first experience of Bromsgrove.

The new indoor sports arena will be one of the largest any school has constructed, with seating for 900 people. It will be more than simply a sporting venue - the building will accommodate eight badminton courts and will be large enough to host regional and national indoor hockey, basketball and netball events. There will be a new Fitness Suite on the first floor overlooking the Astroturf and a Café on the ground floor.

A Hospitality Suite will be constructed to overlook the netball and hockey courts and will transform the quality of experience for parents, pupils and guests. It will be an ideal location for parents’ match teas and will provide the School with an overdue entertainment area for major non-sporting events as well. On the ground floor there will be new dance studios and a viewing area for the re-designed swimming pool.

We are building a new Mary Windsor girls’ boarding House while Oakley House (also for girls) will be refurbished to the extent that it will be virtually unrecognisable. The new Mary Windsor will be a three storey, 60 bedroom, ensuite boarding house with spectacular views over the sports pitches, and all boarding house parents’ accommodation will also be rebuilt.

The aesthetic enhancement will be stunning and in keeping with the sports development opposite.

Looking further to the horizon, the old Mary Windsor House will be fully refurbished to become a purpose-built boarding house for the Preparatory School. We also have plans to restore, extend and refurbish the Cricket and Rugby Pavilion, which will complete the programme for sport at Bromsgrove.

Planned for 2014/15 is the extension and refurbishment of the Dining Hall. Opened by the Queen Mother in 1964, it was built to provide a central facility to replace dining in Houses and to cater for the 327 boys then in the Senior School. With 900 boys and girls in the Senior School today, we have long outgrown this facility and new and larger kitchens and dining facilities promise to completely transform the experience of ‘school dinners’ at Bromsgrove.

Completing the building programme will be a new Performing Arts Centre. Pupils come to understand better the human condition if music, drama and art are central to the life of a School. Experience can be amplified and intensified through the arts, and at their best they can increase our sensitivity to and empathy with others. They are that important. The new Performing Arts Centre will provide an inspirational venue for performances of theatre, concerts and recitals.

honouring our donors Bromsgrove is delighted to offer a variety of ways in which it can recognise its benefactors. These include; attending events, participating in societies, being acknowledged in key publications, offering naming opportunities in honour of donors and their families, and providing donors with regular updates on the impact of their philanthropy. Equally, all requests for anonymity will be respected fully.

Naming opportunities One way in which Bromsgrove can acknowledge its benefactors is through naming opportunities. These may include naming opportunities on buildings, rooms, sporting facilities, plaques and rolls of honour where appropriate and creating named funds for 1553 Scholars.

Chairman’s Court of Benefactors Donors who have given (or pledged over a number of years) substantial benefactions of £100,000 and over, may be invited by the Chairman of Governors to become members of the prestigious Court of Benefactors. Bromsgrove’s most significant supporters will be appointed to the Court at Commemoration Day. Their name will be read out in an annual reading and engraved in the inner entrance to the Chapel, ensuring their place in the history of the School.

Members will be invited to an annual dinner with the Headmaster, Governors and Foundation Trustees, providing the opportunity for benefactors to engage with, and gain a greater understanding of the life and work of the School.

They will also receive further invitations to other special events.

The Board of Benefactors The Board of Benefactors recognises donors who have given (or pledged over a number of years) £20,000 and over. For 50% higher rate UK taxpayers, the end cost of a gift worth £20,000 to Bromsgrove is £10,000. Spread over 5 years, this equates to £38.46 per week. The Board has a dual purpose

in that it is both recognition of a major contribution, and also a vehicle for participation in our future. It is hoped that it will encourage an ongoing interest in Bromsgrove as well as a willingness to offer advice, connections and continuing support. New Members will be announced at Commemoration Day and invited to an annual dinner with the Headmaster.

Their names will be recorded on a commemorative board in the new Hospitality Suite and published in the Annual Governors’ Report.

Sir Thomas Cookes Society There are powerful reasons why all those who care about Bromsgrove and its future should remember the School in their will. This is your opportunity to make a difference to the lives of generations to come and take your place among the School’s most distinguished benefactors. Over time, it will help to transform Bromsgrove’s financial situation by dramatically increasing our overall endowment to fund scholarships, bursaries and major capital projects. All those who have pledged a legacy to Bromsgrove in their will are invited to join the Sir Thomas Cookes Society, an association which is held in deep respect and affection by everyone at Bromsgrove. Members are invited to an annual lunch with the Headmaster and their names will be recorded on a plaque in the Chapel and published in the Annual Governors’ Report.

Major benefactions of £20,000 and over will be announced at Commemoration.

The Circle of Ambassadors Donors giving £1,000 or more to the Annual Fund in a single year are invited to become a member of the Circle of Ambassadors. The Annual Fund supports a variety of small but important initiatives aimed at enriching and enhancing the pupils’ educational experience. Gifts can be spread throughout the year e.g. by monthly instalments. The total end cost of a gift worth £1,000 to Bromsgrove for a 40% rate UK taxpayer is £600, which equates to just £11.53 per week over 12 months. Members receive a formal certificate, an invitation to an annual drinks reception hosted by the Headmaster and their names are published in the Annual Governors’ Report.
