Welcome to Brock.

We acknowledge the land on which Brock University was built is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe people, many of whom continue to live and work here today. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties and is within the land protected by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum agreement. Today, this gathering place is home to many First Nations, Métis and Inuit, and acknowledging reminds us that our great standard of living is directly related to the resources and friendship of Indigenous people.

The Brock Badgers have a long tradition of success, and the 2025–26 season was no exception. The women’s volleyball team earned their fourth provincial title and secured the program’s first national award, with a solid third-place finish. The men’s rowing team captured a provincial championship, marking their fifth consecutive title. Wrestling also had an outstanding year, with both the men’s and women’s teams earning provincial titles, and the men’s team securing a national championship. Brock Sports remains committed to providing Badgers with opportunities for personal growth and development, while actively contributing to and strengthening the community.
With more than 8,000 participants in our intramural leagues and tournaments each year, there is truly something for everyone. Our recreational offerings also include a wide range of fitness programs, such as ExpressFit classes, aquafit and learn-toswim lessons, as well as student high ropes climbs and drop-in sports, along with many other activities. In addition, we offer First Aid, personal trainer and aquatic leadership certifications.

Challenging perceptions of youth justice Ben Sterling MA in Critical Sociology Inspired by his own experiences, Ben examined how “at-risk” labels can shape the lives of young people. His master’s research challenges traditional justice narratives, exploring how systems intended to support youth can also reinforce surveillance and stigma. Through critical research, Ben is advocating for more compassionate approaches that recognize the potential in every young person.
Driven by a passion for discovery
“
“
We need to be careful about the labels we assign — and the systems we build around them.”
Kevin Olenic,
MSc in Computer Science Kevin’s passion for artificial intelligence led him to graduate at the top of his class, earning Brock’s 2026 Governor General’s Gold Medal. His research explored how AI can create faster, more secure computer networks while demonstrating that impactful innovation doesn’t always require massive AI models. Along the way, he also found purpose as a teaching assistant, mentoring undergraduate students and sharing his enthusiasm for computer science.
It just takes finding what gives you passion, following that passion and then finding exciting things that come from it.”
Turning lived experience into change Rawan El Haj
PhD in Child and Youth Studies As a Horizon Graduate Student Scholarship recipient, Rawan’s research is rooted in her own experiences navigating displacement and resettlement. Her work examines how policies and systems affect refugee and newcomer children and youth, with the goal of creating more equitable supports and opportunities. Through research grounded in lived experience, she is helping shape more inclusive communities.
“
My lived experience has given me a unique perspective on the challenges many children and families face, and I want my research to contribute to meaningful change.” 11

STUDENT RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT
When you find yourself saying a group of people can’t do something, ask why that is and whether there’s a way to change it.”
Anna Nickel
Master of Science in Applied Health Sciences
Seeing Concussion Differently: Rethinking Testing for Athletes with Visual Impairment For Anna Nickel, research is personal. After experiencing multiple concussions herself, she was inspired to improve concussion assessment tools for athletes with visual impairments. Her research focuses on adapting traditional concussion tests to make them more accessible while maintaining their clinical effectiveness. Anna’s work has earned national recognition. In 2026, she won Brock’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition before becoming the University’s first-ever Ontario Regional 3MT® champion, advancing to the national competition. Through her research, Anna is working alongside researchers, athletes and clinicians to help make concussion care more equitable for everyone.

RESEARCH TEAM HIGHLIGHT Building Empathy for Sustainable Water Futures The research: Why should we care about climate impacts in the future, or how it is affecting people in other places? We use augmented reality – a superimposed alternate reality on top of what we see in the present – to show potential climate futures / realities. Our aim is to see if this increases awareness, empathy, and pro-environmental behaviours now, to better address future and faraway impacts. Faculty lead: Dr. Julia Baird (Canada Research Chair and Professor, Environmental Sustainability) Research team: Students: Hannah Lübker (PhD), Kinza Qureshi (MS), Alicia Rauth (MS), Lauryn Ruska (BA); Faculty and researchers: Drs. Jessica Blythe, Marilyne Carrey, Alex Cristie, Gillian Dale, Elson Galang, Gary Pickering, Scott Steinschneider; Brock Staff: Jeremy Liepert; Partners: City of St. Catharines, Niagara Parks Commission Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority.
