Pandemic: Electroshock Digital Transformation

The dawn of a technological revolution in our society

Atthe beginning of 2020, we could not even begin to imagine what was just around the corner. At that moment, our plans as a provider of Salesforce-based Digital Transformation technology solutions were focused on showing our clients the value and need of

digital evolution, both as a tool to provide competitive advantages, as well as a vehicle to serve a generation of young people that expect immediacy and hyperpersonalization in every interaction with a brand or service.

News of a strange disease in China, leading to the closure of

entire cities, were perceived as an overseas issue, far away from the U.S., in a context of an almost political style of control characterized by extreme measures. Westerners did not see it coming as the beginning of the brutal reality a few weeks later reached Europe, the United States and, on short notice− our Latin American countries. Even as the first cases struck −a few dozen per day− we were still in denial that in a very short time human drama and the loss of lives would force governments to activate stringent containment measures that would severely affect the economy as well as our way of living, working and interacting. These circumstances would also shift consumer expectations about how a brand or supplier should interact with them and how companies can influence their purchase decisions.

In a few months, our most technology-averse friends and relatives −even seniors? (If you are giving this to people in the US, I might remove this part)− have evolved in the way they used their devices; they are no longer limiting themselves to basic social networks. Suddenly, they are also making video conferences for both work and celebrating birthdays, sending packages and buying services and products on-line, replacing the decades-old ritual of paying a weekend visit to shopping malls and grocery stores. In the flash of en eye, our entire society adopted behaviors that were thought to be exclusive to Millennials and Generation Z, accelerating an revolutionary change that otherwise would have taken a few more years. It was an

“electroshock” therapy towards digital transformation that took just a few months and coined a new reality that will surely remain well beyond the end of the pandemic.

The post pandemic reality that lies ahead requires companies to interact efficiently and in an innovative way in the digital world, no longer as a competitive advantage, but as an essential comparative advantage to survive and remain as a relevant player in its ecosystem. Not only is there no turning back on the habits and behaviors that society had adopted in the past months, but the economic recovery will speed up investment in the digital space, making it a centerpiece of any strategy or business model for all industries.

Despite the imperative need to establish a digital transformation

strategy that encompasses all points of interaction with the customer, we must start from two central areas: Digital Marketing and E-Commerce. When we talk about lead generation and purchasing process in a digital environment, the vision is much deeper and more complex than merely sending emails, hiring an Ad Agency to have a presence in Social Networks and a website with a Shopping Cart. The new reality makes mandatory to develop a much deeper interaction with the consumer to obtain a detailed understanding of his/her interests, searches and previous experiences before visiting our on-line assets, so that what the site presents is not just the discount of the month, but fully customized information that allows interaction according to the specific interests and needs of the customer.

Freeway Consulting

Mass mailings are no longer enough as relevant and personalized communications are now required −at the right time and through the customer’s preferred channel− offering a custom-tailored, on-line experience suited to the tastes, interests, needs and preferences of the buyer. In our extensive experience with Salesforce solutions in industries such as Retail and Consumer Goods, we have seen

substantial increases in the depth of customer relationships and −of course− in revenue.

While it is true that the need for digital transformation could be perceived more clearly in B2C (Business to Consumer) environments, the impact on B2B (Business to Business) scenarios is equally profound and transformational. This is generating the imperative need for

a much more agile and integrated digital model of relationship with distributors and suppliers, as well as a dramatic evolution of the commercial force towards a 360 vision of the customer. If properly executed, this will allow us to integrate and leverage the productive components of the organizations, making possible realtime projection of prices, production requirements and impacts on the supply chain.

The beginning of the end of the pandemic in the second half of 2021, will undoubtedly mark one of the most accelerated periods of technological evolution witnessed by mankind, driven by a reactivation of the economy, by an ecosystem strongly adapted in recent months to the digital world and for an increasingly advanced range of solutions adapted to the Electroshock therapy that we have experienced. We are about to bear witness a new digital revolution in our society.

HIGH QUALITY

standards and operations

A comprehensive and certified operation from sowing to distribution is the cornerstone for Licores de Guatemala to endure as one of the companies exalting the name of the Central American country.

Translated by María Murgui
Interviewee

Licores de Guatemala has exalted the name of its country internationally through the exportation of fine beverages of high quality and excellence in their production processes; its brands come to be a model which is earning more and more prestige with the passing of time. In its country of origin, its rums and “aguardientes” are already a part of the local tradition for the best occasions, serving in each sip more than 80 years of experience which is also present in more than 25 countries. Besides extending its presence internationally, in 2013, Licores de Guatemala got the “Ron de Guatemala” Designation of Origin, thus affording status not only to the land and environment where the cane grows, but also to the quality of the materials in which it is stored and aged.

Later, in 2020, Industria Licorera Quezalteca won an award as Exports of the Year, which acknowledges the company’s quality, sustainability and competitiveness.

“Licores de Guatemala is currently at a very important point after five years of uninterrupted growth and a profitability of each of its production units”, pointed out Luis Ibáñez Guillén, General Manager at Licores de Guatemala.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE SECTOR

Ibáñez is an industrial engineer and public accountant whose education took place in Peru. He also earned an MBA at ESAN (Spanish acronym for Business School for Graduates, in Peru) University Business School and is currently a doctor candidate at the University of Seville (Spain). “My job is results-focused, I take part in all the business development aspects”, declared Ibáñez.

OPERATIONS WITH THE SUPPORT OF A COMPLETE STRUCTURE

The operation of Licores de Guatemala has got the structure of an

integrated chain: from the sugar cane plantations, the sugar mill where raw material is processed, distillery, aging centers, packaging factories, its own distribution system and contracted distribution through first-tier partners for the global presence of the product. Moreover, the company has a division for imported liquors of different kinds, through which first-

class brands are commercialized.

The operation is complemented with Casa del Ron, its own retail chain, which has different locations in the country.

RICH PORTFOLIO WITH WELLPOSITIONED BRANDS

Licores de Guatemala is formed by rum, “aguardiente” and gin brands,

Beyond alcohol as a beverage, COVID-19 pandemic took Licores de Guatemala to develop Alkoh, making an incursion the in medicinal alcohol market, thus contributing to fight the virus.

COMPANY-OWNED RETAIL OUTLETS

In order to work as a complete operation, Licores de Guatemala manages its own retail channels, which have been modernized and reshaped through physical sales channels Casa del Ron, in different cities in the country, whose unique concept has been renovated.

After the transition to e-commerce on the part of the consumers, which was accelerated during the quarantines derived from the

pandemic, the company has focused its efforts on developing its electronic commerce channel.

SUPPLIERS’ SECTORS

Each line of Licores de Guatemala’s suppliers is properly segmented according to each stage in the production and commercialization of beverages.

For the farming stage of the process, the company has got suppliers who can afford the best fertilizer and riper which not only fullfils the sowing and optimal development of the cane, but also are friendly to the environment and the soil quality for sowing. Another important partnership is the one with packaging material suppliers (both glass containers as well as lids and labelling).

An important task with companies which take part in key areas for the creation of formulae, such as flavoring, aromas and natural scents is also carried out.

“We have converted the company into a lean organization to respond to the high speed of changes in the markets”

SUSTAINABLE OPERATION

The purpose of directing the company towards sustainable operations has resulted in important investments on behalf of Licores de Guatemala, accomplishing effective actions such as a reduction in the use of fossil fuels and the optimization towards clean processes, having received the ISCC Certification Plus (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) and verified the entirety of its production chain. This rank also guarantees the optimal management of the production chain’s resources, from plantations, mills, distilleries, aging and packaging

centers to experience centers.

This way, the company guarantees the sustainability of Guatemalan rum, which keeps up to world standards not only for its quality, but also for its caretaking of the environment and respect of human rights.

The company earned the Neutral Carbon certification in May 2021 from SGS, thus fulfilling ISO Standard 14064:2006. This was achieved by eliminating its carbon footprint, without turning to the purchase of carbon footprint credits as other companies do, as it owned an inventory of more than 1,850M to achieve its own mitigation of

greenhouse effect gases.

Towards the external part of the company, Licores de Guatemala created the “Tranquilo Camilo” campaign, which consists of enjoyable communications to promote the moderate consumption on behalf of consumers.

FUNDACIÓN LICORERA (SOCIAL WORK ORGANIZATION)

Fundación por la Vida (Foundation for Life) was created in 1986. It changed its name to Fundación Licorera, which contributes to the complete development of the Guatemalan society focusing on three

main points: life standards through nutrition, education and productive programs.

This organization has managed to have an impact on children and surrounding communities through two schools with about 1,000 students, and also more than 200 women through different trainings who seek to empower and improve their living standards. They also distributed about 12,620 bags with food in Jocotan, Chiquimula, known as the “Dry Corridor” in our country. In addition to this, our Ingenio Tulula office for relationships with communities has benefited more than 14,300 neighbors and 2,800 families from San Andrés Villa Seca, Retalhuleu, with health,

communal infrastructure and human development projects.

LOOKING TOWARDS GROWTH

The main goals for Licores de Guatemala are the consolidation of the growth experienced over the last years and make it sustainable with the passing of time.

After the positioning of its brands in Guatemala and Central America, Licores de Guatemala seeks to emerge in new markets beyond the organic growth.

“We keep an eye on new growth opportunities and we look toward the future with optimism”, concluded Luis Ibáñez Guillén, General Manager at Licores de Guatemala.

Atlas Copco, worldwide group leader in compressed air, vacuum, energy, and industrial tool solutions, has operations in over 180 counties around the globe. Its customer center in Peru, that along with Bolivia are known as the Andean region, was the first office of the Group in Latin America and has been working in the development and execution of industrial projects since 1950. Julio Hernández, new General Manager for the Compressor Technique Business Area at Atlas Copco Peru and Bolivia, tells us more about the vision and development plans for the division in the region.

INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION

During 2021, Atlas Copco experienced a growth in the demand of compressed air technologies for the

development of projects in different markets; from applications in new mining seams and expansions, to industrial installations for penumatic transport and wastewater treatment plants.

Aside from providing the latest in compressed air technological innovations, Atlas Copco advises its customers in the choice of the best solution from its wide equipment portfolio. “Our business is always focused on operational efficiency, sustainability and the responsible use of resources. Therefore, the correct choice of a compressor for an air installation is key for energy savings and the reduction of the carbon footprint at any operation” says Hernández. “We advise our customers about the difference between a 4-bar pressure blower, versus a 5 to 11 bar pressure compressor, and how with

the choice of the right equipment according to a particular application, they can get up to 50% of energy savings”. Usually, these low-pressure solutions are recommended due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption for wastewater treatment plants, flotation processes and pneumatic transport.

Atlas Copco always looks to

provide added value to its customer during their project development process. The accompaniment during the implementation of such projects goes beyond the installation itself, focused on prevention and energy efficiency. “We have seen growth in the awareness about the importance of preventive maintenance, which

goes hand in hand with energy efficiency. Keeping a machine in peak operational performance turns into energy savings. To achieve this, we have intelligent central controllers that regulate the demands and fluctuations of compressed air machines connected to our network, thus increasing their efficiency”.

The industry 4.0 and connectivity tools are not foreign to the compressed air world. Due to the confinement situation caused by COVID-19, remote monitoring platforms have been key for Atlas Copco customers to anticipate their maintenance needs. “All of our compressors come with remote monitoring technology or can be easily connected to our worldwide network through SMARTLINK. This tool supports us with preventive

maintenance since it helps reduce possible failures that may cause production losses to our customers. Also, it allows us to be proactive towards any alert sign the machine may send, which goes straight to our customer and our specialists”.

“Industrial innovations, like our third-generation variable speed drive technology VSDs and SMARTLINK for remote monitoring of compressed air installations, allows our customers to maximize their investment and

optimize the operational times at their installations in a responsible way with the environment”, says Julio.

COMMITMENT WITH THE SOCIETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Sustainability and innovation are key for the Atlas Copco Group. Its sustainability strategy is focused on providing its strategic partners with added value, not only through its products and services, but also through responsible actions with the

environment and society in general.

“At Atlas Copco, our mission is to achieve a sustainable, profitable growth, seeking to empower our customers and drive society towards a better tomorrow”, says Julio.

And so, the Atlas Copco Group in Peru and Bolivia contributes with sustainable development through corporate projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and its

commitment with science-based targets. Julio tells us more about one of their initiatives: “Water for All is a corporate global initiative that develops projects to provide access to drinkable water in places where is needed. This initiative was born from a project promoted by our own staff, to later be adopted by the Group and executed worldwide through strategic partners and Atlas Copco volunteers in every country”.

OUR VISION FOR THE REGION IN 2022

For Julio, this 2022 arrives with several growth and project development opportunities that will need Atlas Copco solutions. “We are in a highly dynamic market that has increased its demand for products and services that, aside from having a

differential value from other offers, are sustainable, efficient and can generate saving in the short, medium and long term”. This year, an organic growth in the business volume is expected for the division in the region, based on tailor-made solutions for the customer and intelligent connectivity tools for service proactivity.

“Solutions based in innovation and advanced technology will be key this 2022, and at Atlas Copco we are more than ready to take on these new challenges the market has for us. With nearly 150 years of experience in compressed air technologies worldwide, our machines have proved to be efficient and sustainable no matter the industrial project they operate in”.

Mining IoT &

Digital transformation within the mining industry has resulted in more productivity and also reduced costs and risk exposure

The interconnection between electronic devices and common use objects to data networks currently implies plenty of everyday tasks. It is already possible to adjust home air conditioning remotely with the hardware’s app in a mobile device, and in the same way we can monitor our home’s wireless surveillance cameras and receive movement sensor alerts.

In different industries, depending on the business sector and its customary tasks, automation between machinery and programmed processes managed remotely is happening since a few years ago, delivering results such as:

• Improving safety and reducing risk exposure both for personnel and equipment

• Transitioning from preventive

maintenance and repairs to predictive maintenance

• Cost optimization and increased productivity

• More and better processes supporting decision-making

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONALS

Besides the multiple professions mining gathers from for its operations, it has now grown a demand for IT specialists. According to GlobalData’s employment database, between July and October 2021 there were 597 jobs related to the Internet of Things (IoT) offered in the mining industry, and 540 of those jobs have been taken, for a 90.45% of positions filled.

Companies such as Anglo American, Caterpillar, Eaton, Flowserve, Komatsu, Nexans and Rio Tinto, among others, are the ones offering the most jobs in which IoT is key for everyday operations.

Besides the multiple professions mining gathers from for its operations, it has now grown a demand for IT specialists

BENEFITS ON THE SURFACE AND BELOW

Interconnected equipment used in mining for remote work includes from heavy load vehicles and automated trains -both driverless- conveying obtained minerals to devices with small sensors transmitting accurate data for decision-making in processes that result in less costs and increased safety.

Orica , the multinational Australian explosive and blasting system supplier, offers cloud-based solutions supported by apps, delivering useful data to determine the quantity of explosives needed for a specific detonation according to rocks’ hardness and results from previous detonations, among other information. Caterpillar, on its behalf, offers automation and remote operation solutions both for fleets and individual equipment through their MineStar™

Solutions line and also zero emissions vehicles such as the automated 793 model.

OUTSTANDING PROJECTS

Infosys, the multinational IT company, shared data about some of the most outstanding operations in which processes based on IoT, clud, AI and cybersecurity have delivered solid results:

• Koodaideri (now known as Gudai-Darri), is an Australian-based Rio Tinto operation where the first intelligent mine has been established, powered by an hybrid system consisting of solar energy and carbonderived fuel. Most of its processes are operated and designed from a

command center in Perth, including the routes for heavy load vehicles, trains and autonomous drill rigs in mines and loading zones. In 2019, the first automated heavy load rail system was built at this site; the AutoHaul™ features automatic response for speed reduction, starts and stops,

Beyond tangible contributions in mining, there have been challenges which will certainly be surpassed through new tech developments

eliminating taking drivers to the mining site. The only factor affecting the more than $2.6 billion investment is scarce workforce, for which iron ore shipments have been postponed to 2022.

• Casa Berardi mine belongs to Hecla Mining and is located in Quebec, where open pit and underground operations are carried out to obtain gold and silver. Hecla partnered with Newtrax to monitor their machinery and its stoppage.

As a result, machinery use has been optimized through real-time diagnostics reducing its stoppage time, thus increasing production and experiencing an average extra hour per day of active operation. In 2020, the Casa Berardi mine produced 121,493 oz. in gold (at cash cost) and

by the close of 2021 production is expected to reach between 128,000 and 132,000 oz.

• Borden (at Porcupine mine, Canadá) is being operated by Goldcorp, which partnered with Cisco, and from 2018 and on, additional adjustments to their EV fleet and their solar energy system were performed, installing fans with sensors in the underground mine, which improved energy efficiency with remote operation, reducing work stoppage due to lack of ventilation. Results have also reduced the air quantity that had to be pumped into the mine from 1.2 million cubic feet per minute to 650,000 cfm. It’s not hard to deduct that electricity consumption in this project has been reduced in half, while obviously reducing costs.

• Glencore, on its behalf, partnered also with Newtrax in 2016 to install sensors for its mobile machinery at the Matagami zinc mine. Data provided by interconnected equipment has resulted in a better understanding of its performance, thus achieving greater productivity.

Each ore mineral load has increased from an average of 55 up to 60 tons.

CHALLENGES FOR IOT IN MINING

Beyond tangible contributions since IoT has been deployed into mining operations, there have been challenges which will certainly be surpassed in the future through new

tech developments.

It must be noted that underground mining implies limitation in connectivity with wireless networks as operations run deeper from the surface. Also, mineral deposits in remote areas can hardly access 3G and 4G connectivity, much less 5G

internet, which is required to move vehicles and other objects from a remote location.

Nevertheless, these are the kind of obstacles that spark the big developments in tech required to continuously bring value into mining.

THE TOP TEN RENEWABLE ENERGY COMPANIES

Translated by Flávia Brancato

Clean energy is nothing new and it also encompasses different models, such as wind power, photovoltaic, biomass and others. It has become more relevant over the years and has the ability to reduce the use of fossil fuels for what is strictly essential. Beyond the boost renewable energies have received, several goals established by the United Nations, which have been adopted both by different countries and private companies -on their own- aim at nullifying emissions and reducing the environmental footprint before ending the first half of this century. This list, released earlier this year by Investopedia, shows us the prevalence of North American companies in this segment, as well as the appearance of two Danish companies and Asian presence.

SunPower is an American company specialized in photovoltaic energy generation and storage. It is one of the pioneering companies in solar energy, being created in 1985. SunPower is located in San José, California. Its solar energy solutions benefit multiple sectors, including construction, business and residential sectors, besides also being suppliers to other companies, and creating turnkey projects. Its revenue totals US$ 1.39 billion.

This American biodiesel producer operates 13 refineries and a raw material processing plant, generating biofuels and renewable chemicals. It also processes waste, virgin vegetable oils, methanol and other materials to convert them into biomass diesel. This company was included in the Fortune 1000 list in 2018 and its revenue totals US$ 2.61 billion.

This Canadian company is engaged in the manufacturing of photovoltaic solar modules, in addition to offering operation and maintenance services for these systems. Canadian Solar has expanded its operation to more than 160 countries. Its annual revenue is US$ 3.36 billion.

First Solar, also from the USA, designs and manufactures solar energy systems. Its services range from financing and construction/ installation to recycling solar panels as they reach their end-of-life. The company has a global presence, including offices in Mexico and Brazil, and posts revenues for US$ 3.50 billion.

The presence of this Canadian giant is clearly global, operating more than 6,000 renewable energy generation facilities in 30 countries. Its main focus is hydroelectric energy, which accounts for more than 60% of its portfolio, but it also invests and operates wind and solar energy generation, and is also involved in energy distribution and storage. Its revenue for the last year as of December 2020 was US$ 3.58 billion.

This German-Spanish company ventures into wind energy and is the second largest manufacturer of wind turbines globally. The merger of Siemens and Gamesa was held in 2017 to create this giant with more than 35 years of experience in the field, which also offers maintenance and reconditioning services, with a presence in 90 countries and revenue of US$ 9.48 billion.

This Danish company was created in 1945 and is responsible for the manufacture, sale, installation and service of wind turbines. It has 16 production plants spread over five continents, providing a job to more than 25,000 employees. Their global work makes Vestas the world’s largest wind energy company. Its revenue was US$ 15.20 billion last year.

The largest manufacturer of solar panels worldwide is this Chinese company, which also produces solar cells and solar modules. Its shares have been listed since 2010 and the facilities opened in Malaysia in 2015 enable the company to avoid some tariffs. Its most recent annual revenue was US$ 33.95 billion.

The multinational based in Spain is involved in the generation, distribution and trade of electrical energy, specialized in clean energy, including wind power, hydroelectric, photovoltaic and biomass energy. It has subsidiaries in four continents and serves more than 30 million consumers worldwide. It earned a yearly revenue of US$ 34.23 million before the end of 2020.

Danish multinational whose wind energy segment is the largest offshore wind energy generator. Its other segments share operations in thermal power plants and Orsted distributes and sells energy and gas in wholesale and retail in the Scandinavia region, the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. Its focus on the use of renewable energy has allowed the company to establish medium and long-term goals regarding achieving zero carbon emissions and since 2019 it has also been considered the most sustainable company in the world. Its annual revenue is US$ 34.97 billion.

- Petri Salopera, Vice-President of Sustainability at Calibre Mining

MUTUAL BENEFITS FROM PRESENCE IN NICARAGUA

Calibre’s production in Nicaragua currently generates 36% of the country’s exports in gold. And in 2020 only, Calibre’s expenditures paid nearly $200 million in the country among operational expenses, employee salaries and benefits, capital expenses as well as in direct investments contributing to wellbeing and education in communities where the company operates in, while creating more than 3,000 positions for direct and indirect

labor, and counting with 98% of Nicaraguan nationals on its staff. Not bad for a company that arrived in the country in 2009 whose main operations were mining exploration, near the country’s Caribbean coast, mainly.

“Nicaragua has a mining tradition; we’ve always stated that the country has well established, clear laws regulating the mining industry,” Salopera declared.

KEY ACQUISITIONS

In 2019, Calibre acquired assets

in Nicaragua from B2Gold. This transaction included La Libertad (in Chontales) and El Limón mines; currently, both locations are goldproducing sites. Also, the company owns the Pavón and Eastern Borosi (EBP) projects, which imply a significant contribution to the companies’ operations in Nicaragua.

Calibre also acquired several exploration concessions, and in March 2020 the company signed an agreement along with Rio Tinto

Exploration with the purpose of increasing investments in different mining projects within Nicaragua.

OPERATIONS AND ABILITIES

Calibre Mining’s operational model is run under the “Hub and Spoke” scheme: extracting minerals from different sites to be carried into processing plants which sum a processing capacity of 2.7 million tons per year, which allows to ramp up production rapidly and with low costs, delivering long-term value for shareholders.

This combination allows reinvestment for exploration in emerging areas.

OPTIMIZED PROCESSES

Calibre Mining uses up to 97% of recycled water in production processes through tailings dams, which are built with waterproof materials to avoid residuals being in contact with the ground or groundwaters.

Tailings storage facilities include piezometers to measure residuals in tailings and embankments.

“As a company, we are focused on a sustainable performance with disciplined growth,” the executive pointed out.

LOCAL AND GLOBAL SUPPLIERS

In 2020, Calibre mining invested $58.6 million in purchases. The company is conveniently supported by Bertling Logistics, Canchanya Ingenieros, Casa Pellas, Empremar,

Every Calibre Mining supplier, either big or small, is aligned with the company’s standards about ethics and care for the environment. Calibre also has supplier development programs either for key suppliers countrywide or local suppliers in each site, with the latter group being managed by the Local

Purchases Task Force.

The Directive Committee for Local Content was established in 2020 and is in charge of supervision, revision, approval and support of strategies based in each site.

During 2020, the entire staff at Calibre Mining was subject to safety training sessions focused in each different area, pointing out possible

dangers and risk exposure, besides spreading safety regulations for each aspect.

Nine other specialized technical safety trainings were added, accomplishing goals beyond the basic requirements.

ADAPTING TO CONDITIONS DURING THE COVID-19 EMERGENCY

Consequences deriving from de COVID-19 pandemic also affected the mining industry, and Calibre Mining adapted to the new conditions after a temporary halt to activity during April 2020.

Top priority for operations under these new conditions has been the safety and wellbeing of company employees; for this purpose, Calibre Mining developed and implemented 17 new biosecurity protocols.

“This brought a positive impact in our staff and we have been allowed to operate without having to halt our operations again since,” Salopera added.

EFFORTS AIMED TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY IN EVERY FRONT

Caring for the environment and company efforts in surrounding communities are an important part of Calibre Mining’s success.

Since 2020, the company has held multiple meetings with different groups such as native communities, among others, which are aware of the company’s responsible operations firsthand. All of these interactions take place under the best global practices carried out by Calibre and under the company’s Native Communities Standards, besides being in contact

• After damages caused by hurricanes Eta and Iota in 2020, Calibre Mining created a humanitarian aid fund along with local authorities and NGOs, helping vulnerable communities in the Rosita, Siuna, Bonanza, Rancho Grande, El Tuma-La Dalia, El Cua and San José de Bocay communities.

• In Rancho Grande, the company built a new educational center for the Yahosca Arriba community,

The company is also involved in other exploration projects, some of them along strategic partners

with improved infrastructure -including solar panels-, benefitting more than 40 students.

A BRIGHT FUTURE SHINING AHEAD

Toward the end of 2021, gold production from Calibre Mining is projected to reach between 170,000 and 180,000 oz.

Previously, with the purpose of creating a mid-level gold mining company, in 2020 Calibre joined the

WGC, with the duty of complying with the Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMP) from this entity. The company is already directing efforts to align with these regulations, as well as with the International Council on Mining and Metals Principles, besides its commitment to comply with efforts aligned to the UN’s SDGs.

It’s projected that the company will be taking three years to totally comply

John Richard Simplot gave his own name to the company he founded during the late 1920s in Boise, Idaho, a state widely known for its high volume of potato production. The JR Simplot company has always been a standout in innovation, besides facing and surpassing different challenges, detecting opportunities and making the most of them to achieve growth for decades, developing the business of frozen french fries, and becoming an empire after striking important deals with the McDonald’s fast-food chain and its owner, Ray A. Kroc.

Currently, Simplot generates 11% of french fries imports in Mexico, and, along two other companies, adds to 60% to 65% of the specialty’s global production.

Through its food, agriculture, turf and livestock divisions, Simplot

generates value in the food industry, providing resources to support its suppliers and relying on these resources to thrive in the global market since the early 21st century, with a decade’s worth of labor in Mexico.

“We are interested in winning, we think Mexico can host world-class organizations,” commented Luis Alberto Rodríguez Mastache, CEO for Simplot Mexico, and also in charge of the Central America territory for the company.

CORPORATE EXPERIENCE TO FACE ANY CHALLENGE

Rodríguez Mastache earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from ITESM (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, in Mexico), graduating with honors through a scholarship. Afterwards, he completed an MBA from IPADE (PanAmerican Institute for High Business Management, in Mexico), he also completed Humanities studies at

the University of Granada (Spain) and the Strategic Business Negotiations Program at Ivey Business School (part of the Western University, in Canada). His 30-year experience has led him to different areas such as sales and operations, besides marketing, working for multinational companies in the food and beverage industry, and being part of Simplot since 2015.

“It’s our duty to make our organization grow in Mexico under the values the company has displayed: generating value along with suppliers, clients and distributors,” the executive said.

Alberto Ponce is in charge of the supply chain. Ponce earned a degree in Industrial Engineering from ITESM (State of Mexico campus),

and also earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. His 14-year experience has led him to global companies such as ColgatePalmolive, Coca-Cola and Philip Morris.

“To achieve growth, we need the right people. Once the right people are here, the most important thing is keeping the talent in a safe environment,” pointed out Ponce, Supply Chain Director for Mexico and Central America at Simplot.

VALUE FOR CLIENTS, DISTRIBUTORS AND FOR THE COMPANY

About 400 million pounds worth of potatoes are imported into Mexico, which, along with the 350 million pounds imported into Central America

and the Caribbean add up to 750 million lb, which amounts to almost a billion lb in a global market worth 26 billion lb of potatoes. Simplot’s main focus is on food service businesses, which includes restaurants of every level, grocery stores, retail chains and other specialized outlets.

“Our value proposition offers solutions for what our clients are looking for,” Rodríguez Mastache declared.

SUPPORT FROM THE PARENT COMPANY IN EVERY FRONT

The structure providing support to the Simplot Mexico operation covers beyond the values and principles of a family business, which brought success to the company in its home country, but it’s also based in three key factors:

• Strategic support: The necessary support to design and track the company’s course, from goals to

the different ways to carry out plans.

• Product portfolio: The Quality Assurance and Research & Development departments contribute to deliver products with the highest quality and consistency; R&D also directs efforts to upcoming innovations. As a result of such efforts, the company is able to offer a product that maintains its temperature for 40 minutes, resulting in a warm, crispy product as delivery customers receive their meal.

• Innovation system: Investment in technology and standardized systems, answering to processes deployed during the last two years, led by the implementation of the SAPHANA ERP platform.

This structure allows Simplot Mexico and affiliates worldwide to work with freedom, responsibility and authority to make decisions and carry concrete

LARGER PRODUCTION ABILITY

To back Simplot’s strategic positioning in the fries specialty, the company opened new production plants in Argentina and duplicated its production capacity in Canada and China.

Regarding Mexico and Central America, Simplot doubled production capacity for avocado in Mexico, with the company’s plants in Morelia and Irapuato leading the way.

“Our production facilities in Mexico deliver global production for Mexico, the United States and Asia,” Ponce commented.

CHALLENGES FACED BY LOGISTICS

One of the most important tasks in the Logistics department for Simplot Mexico is developing distribution networks, considering how fragmented distribution is in Mexico,

“We strive to promote solutions actions to increase profitability.

as delivery to every food service unit becomes a challenge.

Synergies have been developed to counteract the contraction among available carriers in the US to bring the product down to Mexico’s northern border and rely on a nationwide distribution network.

In Central America, the company is developing a similar network, able to work with the same efficiency as the one in Mexico does.

“Our distribution partners are doing a great job, we are setting up agreements with Mexican entrepreneurs to reach more locations,” Rodríguez Mastache declared.

Simplot’s strategic partners in logistics operate units furnished with GPS, led by monitoring stations for easy location 24/7, in the same way maritime shipping lines operate tracking platforms.

along with our distributors and show them that investments in technology are important as it is connecting through social media, offering different options and the importance of delivering a quality product,” Rodríguez Mastache commented.

ACHIEVEMENT VIA SIMPLOT GROWER SOLUTION

Depending from different potato farmers led Simplot to create the

Simplot Grower Solution advisory services, which provides resources such as information, valuable data and advanced products for farmers to obtain successful crops.

This program has been successful with small farmers in the US and Canada, in the same way it has been developed in Mexico, so far, under the “Partners in Growth” brand philosophy.

Almacenaje • Distribución • Acondicionamiento de Mercancía • Certificado para Exportar

“In this way, we guarantee quality and support our partners’ growth,” Ponce added.

“GREAT PLACE TO WORK”

Simplot Mexico considers the long term as an important factor to create and maintain sustainable systems, also in aspects such as driving its workforce development. Such an environment favoring outstanding performance has not only earned

Simplot Mexico being listed as a “Great Place to Work”, but has held the company in this ranking during the last four years, factoring along other elements such as the professional/ personal life balance aspect among employees.

“We all have leadership within our duties, we all have a leadership example for things to happen,” Ponce concluded.
