Cover Star

Our front cover this month features Logan Watt. Logan made his debut back in 2019 before a loan move to Keith during the 2020/21 season brought valuable Highland League experience.

Comfortable in a range of midfield positions, Logan also carries a significant goal threat as shown by his recent scoring streak of 10 goals in 7 games (incl. 3 in 3 for the First Team and 7 in 4 for the Under 21s).

THE CHAIRMAN FINLAY NOBLE 4

Welcome to issue two of our Monthly Magazine for season

2023-24 and I hope all our readers are well. It doesn’t seem like a month since our last magazine but it does seem like I’ve spent every waking hour on the team bus !!

It’s been a strange run of fixtures, but they’ve been certainly successful for us. It will be good to see the Bellslea again on Wednesday for the Formartine Utd game.

We have progressed in both the League Cup and Scottish Cup with some excellent results. Hopefully that continues this weekend where we have a very difficult away tie in the League Cup Semi Final at Brechin City. It has been a long time since we have done anything worthwhile in this competition and to change that we will need to be at our best to get to the final.

The Scottish Cup campaign started last weekend at Caledonian Braves where we were worthy winners despite the close scoreline.

That shows how football can be, especially in cup ties, and if you don’t get the goals your play deserves it can get pretty nervous towards the end where anything can happen. However, we seen the game out to come away with the win on a surface which wasn’t the best, being a 3G pitch, albeit an old one but it didn’t make for a good spectacle. I’m not a fan of 3G pitches but we probably need to get used to them as they are becoming more common. From a community perspective and a revenue stream there is a very good argument for having one and the standard of them has vastly improved while at the same time the cost is coming down.

Our victory yesterday has set up a tasty tie here at Bellslea Park against Bonnyrigg Rose on Saturday 28th October. We have a recent history with them so it is a tie we will all be looking forward to.

play East Fife here at Bellslea on Sunday 15th October.

You will see elsewhere in the magazine an old article from the Highland Football & Sport Magazine from 1990 where we were looking forward to getting our floodlights erected and the benefits they would bring. It doesn’t seem like 33 years since we got lights, but we are about to upgrade the current lights to LED. That will be a savings boost to our electric bill but more of that in later magazines.

The one thing with all these away games is you get to see what a fantastic travelling support we have and none more so than at Caledonian Braves last Saturday. The players and management certainly appreciate the support.

Come awa the Broch Finlay

It is not only the senior Scottish Cup we have made progress in, we are also through to Round 2 of the Scottish FA Youth Cup and will

THE MANAGER MARK COWIE

I don’t think I have ever experienced a month of games as we have over the course of September 2023.

A total of 10 games across the club and only one of them at home. 4 consecutive Saturdays away from Bellslea but not just any old away games. In these last 5 weeks we will have travelled to Inverness to play Clach, Grantown-On-Spey to play Strathspey Thistle, then the annual trip up to Wick to play the Academy, a Scottish Cup first round tie away to Caledonian Braves at North Lanarkshire, and finally a semi final trip to Brechin.

We started of the month with a commanding victory up at Clach where we played well again and won the game convincingly 6-2. Going forward we continued our form with some good link up play but we were disappointed at the manner of the goals we lost as they were both avoidable. We’ve never had it easy up there so to come away with this result was pleasing.

We then moved on to the second round of the League Cup with an away trip to

Strathspey Thistle. Again somewhere where we have always had a tough game. We mixed it up a bit to freshen up the squad and although always in control, it took us a while to get going. A great strike from Josh Bolton gave us a lead in the first half before a 20 minute blitz at the start of the game seemed to put the game to bed through a Sean Butcher penalty and a Fig lob. We conceded again another poor goal and then almost lost another straight from kick off which would have made for a close finish but thankfully we held it out and managed to progress to the semi finals.

Seven days later we had the mammoth trip to Wick to play up there. Again we controlled the game and were never really in any trouble. We scored early through Ryan Sargent before Logan Watt continued his goal scoring form to make it 2-0 with Paul Young getting a third before half time. We did get a scare just before the whistle when Wick were awarded a soft penalty in my eyes however they failed to convert so the score line finished the half at 3-0. We were a bit reserved in the second half

8

knowing we had a commanding lead. We wanted to focus on not giving anything away and we did that. Wick didn’t really manage to create much and we seemed to control the tempo. Nothing changed and the full time score ended 3-0 in our favour.

Our Scottish Cup adventure then started with an away trip to Caledonian Braves. We played this team a few years ago but under the name of Eduaport Academy as they were called at the time. We did our homework and got as much info on our opponents as we could. We even had Matthew West go down to watch them in action against Bo’ness where he compiled a very detailed report on how they performed. All the info gathered allowed us to put a plan in place and thankfully it paid off. We were good on the day but the plastic pitch didn’t really help us. We had all the ball first half and should have went in at HT in the lead but we couldn’t convert any chances. Second half was much and such the same where we continued to probe but nothing would fall for us. It was beginning to look like being one of those days but thankfully Paul Young used his energy to get in to a position in their box which led to him being fouled for a penalty kick. Ryan Sargent managed to put it in and then scored again shortly afterwards which seemed to be enough. They scored from a corner late on but couldn’t muster any more chances and the final whistle went meaning we were in to round 2 where we have a home tie against our old foes Bonnyrigg Rose.

To finish the month we have a league game against Keith and a semi final against Brechin both of which I look forward to. The league game is a catch up from a previous one missed so it will get our games back up to the same as those around us. The semi final will be a very

tricky tie but it’s a one of game and gives both teams the chance of reaching a final this early in the season.

In terms of players we have some good and some not so good news.

Grant Campbell has picked up an injury and may be out for some time. Just one of those things which happens in football where he twisted the wrong way and felt a pain in his knee. He is taking some time out to try and rest and rehabilitate and then we will take it from there.

On a more positive note Jamie Beagrie’s work situation has changed slightly for now which will see him be available for the remaining games this season as he will be working onshore for a period of time. This will hopefully work for Jamie and who knows may be a long term thing.

We are in discussions with players as we speak so fingers crossed in next month’s notes we will be celebrating some contract extensions as we look to tie players up to the club for the longer term.

THE CAPTAIN WILLIE WEST

September has been a good month for our group with four wins from four at the time of writing which allows us to keep challenging on all competitions. But we still aspire to do better, improve on our overall performance levels and reduce our goals against.

First up was Clach, which is always a difficult place to go but I felt we got them at a good time where their confidence was low and we were able to win 6-2 with some great goals from Logan Watt, Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour. I wouldn’t be surprised if 3 of the goals are contenders in goal of the season. The Highland League Cup 2nd

round was next and we progressed via a 3-1 win away to Strathspey. Josh Boulton’s first touch and finish for his goal was a different level and he deserved it with his performances in training and the under 21s.

Another long journey to Wick Academy was next where we progressed with a 3-0 win. We were quite comfortable throughout the game minus a dubious penalty that was awarded prior to the end of the 1st half but thankfully the penalty flew over the bar. It was good to see the game out with a clean sheet for Joe Barbour.

Lastly Scottish Cup duty and a

12

2-1 win over Caledonian Braves was enough to see us through although I thought our first half performance deserved us to be a couple of goals ahead at half-time. They had some giants in their team but Keezo and Beags managed to limit their aerial threat for the most part of the game. Great to see Sargent getting a double and hopefully he can build on those goals in the days ahead.

With all the long away journeys I might have had a funny story to let you in on but as is the professionalism of the group, there’s not much to tell! The odd game of S & C on the bus and some blasting of ‘Walking’ and Newton Faulkner being

the highlights of our journeys thus far.

The October period will challenge us all as a squad with not only the number of games but the quality of opposition with nearly 2 games per week.

It is great to have Jamie Beagrie’s experience back from offshore at the perfect time to supplement the squad. However, possibly the most important member of the squad in October will be our very own Sarah Robertson to ensure everyone stays fit and healthy for as much as possible.

THE HEAD OF YOUTH

MATTHEW WEST

It's been another busy Month for all involved within the youth. The group have displayed really entertaining matches and trained well.

It was great to get the chance to take in a number of local Junior games, a chance to see our loan players first hand and see how they have adapted to Junior football. This is a vital stage within our development pathway towards the 1st team and we are pleased to see the guys continue to get gametime on a Saturday.

Our eagerly awaited season opener for U18s would end in a narrow and spirited defeat at hands of Dyce. With much of the team making their debuts. The lads gave themselves a mountain to climb going 2 goals behind early on, but credit to them they fought hard and showed incredible resilience to fight back and, on the night finished well, rueing

missed chances preventing a more favourable result.

Trailing 2-0 at half time our U21s did remarkably well to fight back with 3 goals after the break which despite a rallying effort was only enough for a point with a wonder strike further increasing the challenge, they had set themselves. Some fantastic goals and play throughout the game between 2 very talented young teams.

Our focus then turned to Scottish Cup action for the U18s as we played Keith and despite a rather underwhelming performance, we progressed to the next round of the cup.

Amid all the youth action Cameron Robertson come off bench at Strathspey to make first appearance for the first team a welcomed boost and reward for his dedication and commitment. Cammy skippered U21s

16

a week later as they returned to winning ways with a dominate display at Buckie.

Our U18s were grateful for club legend Russell McBride to host us at College park last week for a Friendly against his Fraserburgh Utd Junior outfit. A 4-2 defeat on the night was nothing to be ashamed of, our youngsters stood up to the challenge posed by a strong super league team. It was brilliant experience for the squad and will definitely benefit them as they develop with us.

Our U18s performed well on Monday night in an eventful match up at Banff. The lads showing huge character to see out the game having been reduced to ten men.

Off the park U21s gaffer Dean Cowie become a father for the second time with the arrival of baby Daughter Payton Maria Cowie on 3rd September. Deano enjoyed some time off supporting his family and is now back helping us prepare for a tricky run of games.

In particular East Fife, who travel to the Broch in the next round of the U18s Scottish Cup. A challenge we are really looking forward too. With the date for this one confirmed for Sunday 15th October at 14:00 – we hope you can come along and support the Team.

Thanks – Matthew.

BROCH MAGNETS

"Hands off" signs are going up in Fraserburgh. The bright form shown by their young side has been like a magnet to rival Highland League clubs as well as Scottish League scouts.

But player-manager Charlie Duncan reveals: "My local lads are all retained and there will be no bargains from Bellslea. I'm looking to add to my pool rather than subract from it. The days of us being a nursery for other teams are gone."

Adds Charlie: "It is nice to hear so many people pay compliments about my youngsters. But we've done nothing yet - and the best is yet to come."

Broch may have five teenagers in their side - but they also continue to have the league's oldest signed player. None other than Charlie himself, 41 years young and with no plans to retire!

THE OFFICIAL HIGHLAND LEAGUE MAGAZINE

DOZY BROCH!

Fraserburgh will do better next season - "because our players won't be half-asleep", says manager Charlie Duncan.

No, he's not being disparaging about Broch's bright young teamhe's referring to the fact that the club is due to install new floodlights before the start of the season.

This means no more 1.30pm kickoffs next winter at Bellslea... and the Black and Whites are convinced they don't play at their best when there is an early kick-offs.

The Broch biorhythms, it appears, are geared towards a 3pm start. "That's the time to play football, and our results have suffered from early starts", inssists Charlie Duncan.

"Players cannot work Saturday mornings and arrive at the ground half-asleep and not mentally tuned up. I think we will now be able to attract players who didn't fancy coming to us because it would cost them too much in lost wages through losing Saturday morning shifts."

Alan Thomson, the 21-year-old midfielder, has gone through an operation for a cartilage tear and with Doug Ellis and Richard Gordon both suffering long-term injuries, Duncan feels he needs to add to his squad to cover the possibility of all three not being ready for August.

"ROBBO” STAYS

Five teenagers played in the side which faced Fort William recently - but 31-year-old striker David Robertson is certainly in the boss's future plans.

"Dave missed a few games through injury but still managed 16 goals", says Charlie. "The young lads will run all day but they have not improved their scoring rate as time has gone on.

"Our midfield, too, has played well but not scored enough goals.

Goalkeeper Billy Gordon came back from loan to Longside to play very well and the manager adds that Mike McCafferty has had a "super season".

Broch have retained all their staff but right back Henry Michie is going off to Australia for a year. Charlie reports that Brian Sim, who had an excellent season, may not be available regularly next season through promotion in his job at St Fergus.

Fraserburgh's fine form has won them friends - but realistic Duncan wonders: "Have we gone far enough for a local side? I don't know if it is possible to bring them up further against sides with a far bigger choice and more resources. That has to be my nagging doubtbut we'll certainly give it a go."

MATCH ACTION

A review of September’s fixtures as The Broch fight on three fronts - the continutation of the Highland League and Highland League Cup along with commencing the Scottish Cup campaign.

Fraserburgh beat Clachnacuddin with a clinical display of finishing at Grant Street Park.

Sean Butcher got the scoring started on six minutes with a wonderful 25-yard free kick into the top left-hand corner of Daniel Rae’s goal after Scott Barbour was fouled by Ben Cormack.

Four minutes later Barbour beat the Clach custodian direct from a corner from the right wing to double the visitors lead. The home side pulled a goal back on 18 minutes when Harry Nicolson collected a pass from Zack Macphee and fired it into the net from 18 yards.

The Broch restored their two-goal lead four minutes later when Scott Barbour’s corner was nodded back by Bryan Hay to Logan Watt who found the net with a controlled volley.

They extended their lead two minutes after the break when Nicolson felled Ryan Sargent inside the box and the Broch striker got up and smashed the spot kick into the centre of the goal.

The Lilywhites weren’t finished yet though and pulled back to 2-4 down on 59 minutes when

The match was finished as a contest on 70 minutes when Butcher nodded the ball down to Scott Barbour who found the net from 8 yards out. Right at the death the visitors notched a sixth when Watt tapped home from almost on the goal line after Scott Barbour had set him up.

Broch manager Mark Cowie said “we are playing well just now and we were ruthless. We went 2-0 up early on and that settled us but then we gave away a cheap goal, which we could have defended better.”

“Then we got another with a wonder strike from Logan, which gets us into a good position at half time. We scored again early in the second half and you think we’d be comfortable, but again a lapse at the back and we lose another cheap goal.”

“However, we finished strongly with Scott Barbour and Logan Watt wrapping things up.”

STRATHSPEY THISTLE 1-3 FRASERBURGH

Highland League Cup R2| Saturday 9th September 2023

Fraserburgh advanced to the semi-finals but were made to fight all the way by a determined Strathspey Thistle side who put in a grandstand finish.

Josh Bolton scored the only goal of a first half lacking excitement, his 20-yard angled shot from the left beating Callum Ligertwood high into the top right-hand corner after Kieran Simpson’s switch to him.

Two goals after the break looked to have killed the game. Scott Barbour was fouled inside the penalty area by Liam Grant and up stepped Sean Butcher to net from the spot.

Barbour then edged closer to Michael Stephen’s all-time goalscoring record for the Broch, when he raced onto a Bryan Hay through ball and lobbed the goalkeeper from just inside the box for his 235th club goal, just two shy of the record.

The Strathy Jags pulled a goal back on 75 minutes when Daniel Whitehorn’s downward header from

For Broch boss Mark Cowie the main priority was getting the job done and earning a place in the final four of the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup.

He said “We expected a tough game, our opponents have not been getting the results, but showed they are not playing that badly. We had chances in the first half but were never hitting the heights that we can, however we thought we had blown them away with two quickfire goals early in the second half.”

“They came back at us, got a goal and for a we while we were all over the shop. We were a bit lighter for team selection choices but will have a few faces back next week. A real bonus for us was young Cammy Robertson making his debut late on, he kept it simple while others were at times too ambitious.”

The Broch made it seven wins out of eight in all competitions this season by beating Wick Academy 3-0 at Harmsworth Park.

All the goal action came in the first half with Ryan Sargent netting on 6 minutes to give the visitors an early advantage.

Logan Watt doubled the lead on 22 minutes and five minutes before the break Paul Young notched a third to give the Broch some breathing space.

Just before the break Gordon Macnab had a great chance to bring Academy back into the game from the spot, but he missed the target.

There were no more goals as the second half as Wick tightened things up and the Broch couldn’t find a way through the home defence.

Mark Cowie was chuffed to leave Caithness with all three points. He said “I’m delighted with the win, and to keep a clean sheet as I’ve wanted us to keep more of them. We’ve got good options going forward, Scott Barbour and Sean Butcher didn’t score, but other boys stepped up.”

“Logan Watt has got a great knack of scoring goals, Ryan Sargent has been a wee bit frustrated in front of goal, so it was good for him to score from open play and Paul Young is capable of, and should be scoring more goals, so hopefully that’s him off and running again.”

Ryan Sargent’s brace helped the Broch to a 2-1 first round victory against Caledonian Braves at Alliance Park.

There was little to choose between the two sides in an uneventful first half, although Fraserburgh had the bulk of possession and scoring chances.

Midway through the second half Paul Young burst into the penalty area where he was fouled by Harvey Moyes. Ryan Sargent coolly slotted home the resultant spot kick.

With three minutes remaining the same player got on the end of a Sean Butcher knock down to fire the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net past the helpless Bernard White.

The Braves kept fighting and pulled a goal back on 89 minutes when Jack McDowall headed home a Matthew Collins corner from close range.

The visitors held on comfortably to set up a home tie with old foes Bonnyrigg Rose in round 2.

Fraserburgh manager Mark Cowie said, “We’re delighted to be in the next round, we should have put the game to bed in the first half with some of the chances we had.”

“I thought it might be one of those days, but we got the goals and they threw everything at us. We stood up to the pressure and managed to get over the line.”

Keith and Fraserburgh played out an entertaining 2-2 draw despite the best efforts of Storm Agnes.

The first chance fell to the Broch on five minutes when a Sean Butcher free kick dipped just over the crossbar. Ryan Sargent created a chance for himself on 20 minutes but Craig Reid was down smartly to save at his near post.

Kieran Simpson tried his luck from a short free kick on 26 minutes, but his 30-yard effort flew just wide. Keith had a great chance on 31 minutes when Liam Duncan’s corner was met by Michael Taylor but Paul Young was on hand to clear off the line. Minutes later Butcher headed into the net but the assistant referee flagged for an infringement.

Just before the half time break a Jamie Beagrie diving header from Ross Aitken’s cross flashed just over.

Josh Bolton picked out Sargent on 56 minutes but his effort from 10 yards was

deflected wide. Four minutes later Sargent’s long-range shot was deflected into the path of Butcher but Reid pulled off a great save.

Half time substitute Scott Barbour tried his luck from just outside the box but his effort flashed across goal as the visitors stepped up the pressure. Keith took the lead on 66 minutes when Duncan crossed from the left and Taylor headed past Joe Barbour from 10 yards.

Three minutes later the Broch levelled when Sargent fired the ball across the face of goal and Liam Cheyne turned the ball into his own net. The home side retook the lead on 83 minutes when the Broch failed to clear Cheyne’s corner and Michael Ironside forced the ball home.

Four minutes later Keith conceded a penalty for handball and Sargent converted at the second attempt after Reid saved the initial spot kick. Butcher and Sargent went close for the Broch in the final minutes but goalkeeper Reid denied them with some vital saves.

FRASERBURGH FC SUPPORTERS CLUB NEWS

At the start of September, we were on our travels to Grant Street to play Inverness Clachnacuddin, this is a fixture which has been a struggle in the past, Sean Butcher scored a beauty from a free kick in the 5th minute and it was pretty much plane sailing from then on, Scott Barbour then scored direct from a corner in the 10th min, Clach got a goal back before Logan Watt fired in a screamer to end the scoring in the first half, Ryan Sargent scored the 4th goal 1 minute into the second half from the penalty spot, Clach scored their second soon after, Scott Barbour and Logan Watt grabbed their seconds of the game to complete the scoring.

The under 21’s were at home to Formartine United on the Monday night, things did not go to plan as defensive mistakes meant that we were 2 nil down at half-time, an Aaron Miller cross and a Logan Watt header in the 50th minute got us back into the game, in the 58th minute the Broch were back level, Aiden Sopel sent in a cross from the left and Aaron Miller headed home at the back post, the away side went back ahead with the goal of the game, in the 70th minute Logan Watt scored direct from a corner, no more goals were scored and the match finished as a 3 all draw.

We were on our travels to Grantown-on-Spey for the Quarter finals of the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup, in a poor first half we went into the break 1 nil up after Josh Bolton curled a cracker into the top corner from 20 yards out, 2 quick goals at the start of the second half eased any pressure in the game, Strathspey got a goal back which ended the scoring.

Well done to Cameron Robertson who came off the bench to make his debut for the Broch, lets hope he has many more games to come.

The under 18’s were drawn away at Keith on the Wednesday night in the SFA Youth Scottish Cup 2nd round, the lads got off to the perfect start when Evan Anderson tucked the ball into net after only

3 minutes from 12 yards out, Stuart Laird doubled our advantage from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, we were 3 goals up in the 39th minute when Stuart Laird blasted the ball home from the edge of the box, the Broch made it 4 nil on the 45th minute when Evan Anderson rolled the ball into an empty net after a mistake by the Keith defence, in the 54th minute Keith got a goal back, the Broch scored a 5th goal in the 71st minute when Adam Henderson powered in a header from a Stuart Laird corner, Flynn McKay tapped home in the 90th minute to give the Broch a win by 6 goals to 1.

The long haul up to Wick was next for the team, an early Ryan Sargent goal in the 6th minute got us off to the best of starts, Logan Watt doubled our advantage in the 23rd minute and then Paul Young completed the scoring just before half time. It’s a lot happier return journey home when you have 3 points in the bag.

The under 21’s were away to Buckie on the Monday night, Callum Kelly stroked home in the 23rd minute to get us going, Logan Watt doubled our advantage after 29 minutes, Zaine Laird put us 3 nil up on the stroke of halftime, Aaron Miller came on for the second half and stroked home on the 53rd minute, Buckie got a goal back from Hamish Munro, he hit a long range shot which Sam Inglis was unable to keep out, on the hour mark Logan Watt headed home from an Aaron Miller cross, Logan grabbed his hattrick on the 80th minute, Cameron Robertson completed the scoring in the 84th minute.

This 7 – 1 victory keeps the under 21’s undefeated in the Aberdeenshire League, they sit in second place in the League with Turriff United 2 points clear at the top.

The draw for the 1st round of the Scottish Cup took place, it is always a really exciting time for the fans as we get to play someone different

44

from the norm, we were drawn away to Caledonian Braves, they play in the Lowland League at Alliance Park which is located in Strathclyde Park, at the time they were 3rd bottom with 8 points from 10 games played.

We played them back in October 2018 at Galabank Stadium in Annan, at that time they were called Edusport, we won the game by 2 goals to 1 with Willie West and Greg Buchan scoring the goals.

On our way to the game, we were able to take on essential liquids at Dalzell Bowling club, a great time was had by all, we were made to feel very welcome at the club, it sits in the shadow of Fir Park which is the home of Premier League team Motherwell.

The game was played on a plastic pitch which was older than some of our supporters, two goals from Ryan Sargent were enough for the Broch to progress to the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup, it was a tight first half which saw the teams unable to break the deadlock, a late goal by the Braves made it a nail-biting end to the match.

The 2nd round draw then took place for the Scottish Cup, we have been drawn at home to Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic, “do you remember them?”, the tie is due to take place on the 28th October and is sure to be a cracker.

The under 18’s were away from home to Deveronvale on the Monday night, Flynn McKay got the scoring going with a penalty in the 33rd minute, the second was goal of the season, several one touch passes and Will Sim stroked it home in the 40th minute, Hamish Gordon sent us into the break 3 nil up in the 42nd minute, Vale got a goal back mid-way thru the second half and then made it a nervy finish as they scored again in the 88th minute, the Broch held on to claim all 3 points.

We were supposed to be away to Keith in the League on Wednesday 16th of August, Keith have had new floodlights installed so the game has been rearranged for Wednesday 27th September with an 8pm kick-off.

We will be running a bus to the Keith game on Wednesday 27th September which will leave the

QUESTION & ANSWER GREG BUCHAN

Where did you grow up?

Grew up in Macduff. Normally out and about kicking a ball with my pals.

Team supported as a boy?

Everton, still do unfortunately! Got my Dad to blame for that. Love going down as much as I can even though the result’s normally not a positive one. Normally get to a few Aberdeen games in a season aswell.

First game you remember watching?

Live was Aberdeen v. Bayern Munich 2-2 I’m sure, Pittodrie was rocking! First Everton game I remember was on the TV, Dan Gosling scoring in extra time to beat Liverpool in the cup. Probably about the last time we beat them!

First game you can remember playing in?

Playing for Macduff Lions. Galas were always quality to play in.

Who do you sit next to on the bus?

Rossco normally. Or wherever there’s a seat, as long it’s not beside Aidan!

The boots you wore for your last game?

Nike Tiempos.

Best moment on a football pitch?

Probably beating Buckie in the Shield Final last season. It was a really tough game and you can’t beat a late winner in a final.

Favourite goal you have scored?

Goal against Locos in a cup game. Few years back now but it went to extra time. We ended up winning 2-0. I scored a decent goal then Butch scored a belter a few minutes later.

The rocket v. Locos, November 2018

Favourite goal you have seen?

Last minute winner down at an Everton game against Arsenal a couple seasons ago. Demarai Gray scored a belter.

What’s your favourite movie or TV series?

Don’t really watch much films or series. Prefer sport. Football, Golf, NFL.

Favourite band or artist?

Sam Fender.

Who has the worst taste in music in the dressing room?

Aidan’s not gotten on the boombox yet but I’ve heard his tunes in my car and they're brutal.

Best player played against?

Stuart Anderson. Gave me the biggest run around I’ve had. It was against Formartine when I was a young lad at Vale, pretty sure we lost 8-1 that day.

Best player played alongside?

Fig. When he’s on it Saturdays are normally easier!

Funniest thing you have seen in a dressing room?

Probably one of the lads at Huntly trying to rap in the changing room after a game.

Any pre-match rituals or special routines?

None really. Try eat the same things but that’s about it.

Which player in history would you like to play alongside?

Paul Scholes.

If you had the power, which one thing would you change about football?

Liquidate Liverpool!

How do you relax away from football?

Play a lot of golf although sometimes it can be more frustrating than relaxing.

If you could have the opportunity to give another sport a go on a national level, which sport would that be?

Golf.

What do you love most about playing football?

Winning on a Saturday. Makes or breaks your weekend. Can’t beat the feeling after a big win!

FRASERBURGH CUP CRACKER

FRASERBURGH 3-2 PETERHEAD

FRASERBURGH super-sub Paul Keith's 76th minute wonder winner at Recreation Park ended the Bellslea side's 21-year wait to get their name back on the Jarlaw Aberdeenshire Cup.

The Broch goal hero, left out of the starting line-up because of a knee injury, floored Peterhead with a brilliant 20-yard volley seconds after he came off the bench with a superb cup tie balanced on a knifeedge at 2-2.

But Keith revealed it is likely to be his last contribution to a season which has seen cup specialists Fraserburgh stick two trophies on the sideboard for a second successive season. He said: "I'll be lucky to kick a ball again this season. I was sitting on the bench with a knee injury and it went again the minute I hit the winner, so that's it for me until preseason training starts in three months."

back, picked my spot, and hit the ball when it dropped the way I would in any practice game and it just sailed into the top corner. Ivor Pirie had no chance."

A gashed leg in a chainsaw accident, a broken foot, fractured ribs which punctured a lung and his current knee injury have seen the highly-rated Broch hitman miss more games than he has started over the last four years.

Delighted Broch manager Charlie Duncan said: "Paul finished off a great contest with a marvellous goal and that was what it was always going to take to finish off a very good Peterhead side."

The Blue Tooners, out to avenge their 6-3 Aberdeenshire Shield final defeat last November, were well worth their 2-1 half-time lead, recovering superbly after Jim Geddes fired the Broch in front with a blistering 15th-minute free kick.

Of the goal, he said: "I just leaned

the first a low shot on the turn which left Gordon helpless - came within a minute of Geddes's opener. Milne's second goal, a 26th-minute diving header from Scott Brown's pinpoint cross, appeared to have Broch on the back foot.

But Ian Murray stabbed home a quickly-taken free kick from Geddes three minutes into the second half and a final which kept a 1,500 crowd enthralled was back on the boil until Keith settled the issue.

The quality of Broch's winner proved little comfort to Peterhead manager Dave Watson, who said he would be giving his future with the Recreation Park club a lot of thought this week.

He said: "We went into Saturday's final in great shape and in the right sort of form. In the first half, we ran the show and all I asked the players to do at half-time was to pick up where they left off in the first half and they didn't do it.

in front and you simply canoot do that against Fraserburgh in a cup final.

"I've had more than my fair share of cup final disappointments over the last dozen years or so. Every defeat takes something out of you and I'm beginning to wonder whether it's worth all the blood, sweat, and tears."

Fraserburgh almost took the lead with their first attack of the match when Flynn McKay saw his shot tipped over by Charlie Gray. From the resultant corner the ball broke to Max Wiseman but his effort was cleared by the home defence.

There was nothing Gray could do two minutes later when Evan Anderson found himself free in front of goal to tap home from close range. Midway through the half Stuart Laird was tripped inside the box and calmly stroked home the spot kick.

The young Broch made it 3-0 six minutes before the break when Laird blasted the ball high into the net from 12 yards. It was all oneway traffic and Adam Henderson found Aaron Miller with a diagonal switch but the Broch winger saw his half volley go just over the bar.

Just before the break Anderson capitalised on a mistake in the home defence to make the half time score 4-0 to Fraserburgh.

Keith got back into the match on 53 minutes when Michael Maver found time and space to tap the ball home. Four minutes later Laird had a chance for his hat-trick after being

fouled inside the box but his penalty kick was saved by Gray.

On 72 minutes Laird’s corner from the right was met by the head of Henderson who powered a header into the net. With the last action of the game Flynn McKay’s effort was deflected into his own net by Dylan Henderson.

The young Broch will now have a home tie against East Fife in the next round.

FAN FOCUS BRUCE WHYTE

When did you start watching Fraserburgh and why? Can you remember your first game?

It would've been 1980 or 1981. I was 4 years old, and my Grandfather took me to an away game up at Buckie.

Which part of the ground do you go in and why? Any friends you want to mention?

I stand behind the goals at Garage End. I go to the games with my Cousin when he can make it.

Best game and why?

Broch v. Rangers in the 2018 Scottish Cup. Apart from the Broch, Rangers are the other team I support and making it to the Fourth Round was a great achievement too.

Worst game and why?

Losing 3-1 at home to Buckie in the 2021/22 season. Fortunately it never made any difference to the final positions and we still won the League.

Favourite Fraserburgh player of all time and why?

Too difficult to pick between them so I’m going to go with Neil Clark and Scott Murray. Loved watching both of them play.

above: Neil Clark

Favourite current player?

Scott Barbour aka Fig. Great player and some amount of goals.

If you could sign one HFL player for the Broch who would it be?

I’d bring Paul Campbell back from Formartine. I thought he was brilliant for the Broch and I’d have him back here in a heartbeat.

Thing you like best about the Club?

It’s my home town club. It’s as simple as that.

Favourite Highland League ground apart from Bellslea?

Always enjoy a visit to Christie Park, Huntly.

One thing you'd like to change about football?

I would change the way the leagues are structured and would go for two-up/two-down from the Junior Leagues.

Any other club you support?

Rangers FC
