FROM THE CHAIRMAN FINLAY NOBLE
That’s us at the end of another season and one which we played a mammoth 51 competitive games. The most games we have ever played in a season. 34 League games and 17 Cup games.
We must give credit to the players who have put in a demanding effort this season and we often forget that these guys have full time jobs, many of which are manual jobs where they are on their feet for most of the day and then must train or play games at night. There was hardly any rest afforded to them last close season due to the early start to the season with the Kilmarnock game at Bellslea in July. Who can forget the thrill of that Premier Cup Section with games against Kilmarnock, Stenhousemuir, Partick Thistle and Montrose. Brilliant for everyone to be involved in and experience. However, it was an intense start to the season. That on the back of the intensity of the title run in the previous season is some shift so hats off to the guys for that immense effort.
Our season, certainly for me, has been an enormous success. It was always going to be extremely difficult to retain the title, irrespective of who they are.
While not successful in our defence of the title, we have won all three Aberdeenshire trophies, the Cup, the Shield and the Aberdeenshire League (U21). That is a great achievement for the whole club and one which I am extremely proud of, especially as I am currently President of the Aberdeenshire FA. Furthermore, we are the first club to do that.
We also had a great run in the Scottish Cup with an away win at Civil Service Strollers followed by a brilliant victory at Bellslea against Stranraer before succumbing to Dick Campbell’s Arbroath here at Bellslea.
A huge thanks to the coaching staff, Mark, James, Antony, Alex, Paul, Matthew, Dean and Graham along with our two match day physios Sarah and Emma. Likewise, our Kit Manager Derek Strachan who is assisted on a matchday by Zander Smith and Scott Murray. Your efforts are hugely appreciated by everyone at the club.
It is equally demanding for the guys off the park where some of us are involved in all games we play, including the U18 and U21 games on a Monday night, especially the ones at Bellslea. A total of 41 home games over the season!!
We are extremely fortunate to have a core team of guys who keep the club functioning for these games and to make it as professional as possible in all aspects of the club.
We also have a very good Hospitality Lounge on a matchday and it without doubt a major part of the club’s finances, so we are extremely grateful to all the girls who do such a wonderful job in keeping everyone happy over the course of the season, so many thanks to Alice, Amber, Bex, Cara, Chloe, Jade, Jaye, Kim, Lexie, Lisa, Lucy, Megan, Nicole, Phoebe, Sarah and Stace.
You would be incredibly surprised by the number of staff we have off the park that we need to make the game take place to the high level of professionalism we demand. In no order I would like to thank Amy Munro, Becky Gordon, Julia Bronk, Kim Stewart, Laura Matthew, Loretta Jack, Louise Duthie, Maria Strachan, Kryz Tarnowski, Billy Cowe, Tracy Mutch, Cameron Batty, Claire Batty, Graeme Noble, Lewis Noble, Mac Matthew, Charlie Gibson, Luke Schrader, Ava Davidson, Jack Massie, Theo Watt, Fraser Stuart, Owen Paterson, Richie Wade, Hamish Gordon, Finlay Anderson
Even the small touches like ballboys. With the layout of Bellslea Park, especially on a windy day, and the cost of a football in excess of £50, it is costly to keep purchasing balls when they are lost so we are lucky to have had the services of Cameron Batty, Keira Batty, Mac Matthew, Luke Schraeder, Vittorio Dimitrov, Charlie Gibson, Finlay Smith, Conor Duthie and Ben Ritchie over the past nine months.
One person who does a ton of work for the club and pretty much nobody out with the club realises it, is Elizabeth Dunbar. Elizabeth is our Child Protection & Wellbeing Officer who has a hugely difficult job keeping that up to date. That is a huge undertaking for which we are so grateful for. Elizabeth wont like me for saying this as she just likes to get on with it, but it is one of the most important roles at the club.
We as Directors, are merely custodians of the club and it’s imperative we keep the club as healthy as possible so that when the time comes, we pass it on to others for them to continue.
We have two Directors who are moving on due to work and family commitments, Peter Bruce (Vice Chairman) and Calvin Morrice. These are two guys who between them have given over 50 years dedication to the club and two that I will miss immensely.
Peter and Calvin have been at the forefront of the successful running of the club for many years and will be greatly missed, but it comforts me that they will be on the end of a telephone for help and advice when it’s required. That happens in football all the time, up and down the country, but it’s sad when it is your own club. On behalf of everyone at The Broch, we wish Peter, Fiona, Calvin and Gayle the very best wishes and look forward to seeing them at Bellslea Park again in the future.
With Peter’s departure we had a vacancy for the Vice Chairman and that will be filled by George Thom, who I look forward to working more closely with. George is introduced in greater detail elsewhere in the magazine.
Another significant change at the club is the end of a hugely successful sponsorship from McWilliam (Aberdeen) Ltd and in particular, Mike Lawrie. Mike has recently sold his business and is enjoying an extremely well-deserved retirement. Mike has been our main sponsor for 12 years and in that time, we have won 15 trophies together, our most successful period in the history of Fraserburgh FC. Mike is a very quiet and humble man who is a great friend of the club, and we thank him for his generosity over the years. I just hope that he has enjoyed the ride and got as much out of it as we have.
As I say, football moves on and with that comes change so I am excited to see a new logo on the front of our shirts for the first time since 2011.
That will be VT Wealth and on behalf of everyone at the club, many thanks to Vee Thom for her willingness to take on the Main Sponsorship of the club. Our new away kit will be launched in early June at Justrite, and we look forward to seeing what that, as well as the home kit with the new logo will look like.
Further thanks to all our sponsors and advertisers who support us so well over the years and whose backing we couldn’t do without. Especially the main club sponsors, Entier, VT Wealth, Gray & Adams, Bruce of the Broch, Score Group, PBP Services, AM Campbell, JBS Group, Victoria Group and of course McWilliam (Aberdeen Ltd).
And finally, to our loyal supporters for your continued backing both home and away in such good numbers. Here at Bellslea, the supporters have always been like an extra man and when you travel in numbers to our away games it is so encouraging for the players to see that support.
Come awa the Broch. Finlay
FROM THE MANAGER MARK COWIE
I can’t shake the underwhelming feeling inside after this current campaign. It was always going to be difficult when compared to the previous one which saw us crowned Highland League Champions. I was under no illusions how difficult it was going to be to try and retain the trophy. The group who won the league were exceptional that season with every member playing their part.
During the close season after it we already lost three key members of the squad to retirement or relocation. Grant Campbell was pivotal in our success but decided enough was enough in terms of what he was putting his body through just to play. In all honesty Grant shouldn’t have played the remaining games of the season due to persistent groin problems but such is his nature he battled through the pain to help us get over the line. It was all starting to take its toll and Grant decided to retire on a high of winning the league for his fourth medal.
Although a blow to our future title bids, we were fortunate enough that he played a part of the squad. Gary Harris also decided it was time to hang up the boots. Gary’s career with us was interrupted by injuries, one which was serious enough to put him on the side-lines for quite some time. Despite these setbacks he still played a key part in the squad and even in his last season he showed how good of a goal scorer he is by still finding the net and aiding us to the title by scoring regularly like he did through his career. These two retirements were always going to be difficult to replace.
Then we had Lewis Duncan emigrate to USA to complete a scholarship there and live his dream of playing football every day for a living. He had something that no one else in the squad had and probably took him to leave for me to truly realise how good a player he is, and was that season. We only had him for one season really but again he contributed immensely and now is doing really well overseas, which is great to see as he is an excellent kid who I hope does very well for himself in the game, which I’m sure he will. Another big player to lose and ultimately try and replace.
That wasn’t the end of it as through the season we lost PC and Aidan to Formartine after they both told us they needed a change, having rejected contract offers. That is football and careers are short enough so when players ask to leave or state they don’t want to be at a club, then it’s best for all parties that an amicable solution is found and, in this case, unfortunately for us, it was.
The Premier Cup (Scottish League Cup) was great to be involved in but ultimately took its toll on the players. We went up against top top sides in a competitive environment which meant we had to be clever with what we did. Although we lost all four games, I think we made a good account of ourselves, especially in the home games against Montrose and Kilmarnock. I am not here to make excuses about our pre-season, or the players we lost, but it did make it all that little bit harder.
On a more positive note, we won a couple of pieces of silverware again in the form of the Aberdeenshire Cup and Shield. The Cup was a good win for us. We played Formartine United in the final and after an even first half, where we were 1-0 down, we came out all guns blazing in the second half and really had them penned in. We could only muster a draw in the 90 mins which meant the game would be decided by penalties. It turned out to be an extra special night for Joe Barbour. Last season Paul Leask was our number one for much of the season but towards the end Joe had to come in, after Paul was injured and had to go away with work. Joe was exceptional and did really well. One of the toughest calls I’ve ever had to make was who would play in goals in the last game of the season which won us the league. I had my reasons and went with Paul which wasn’t a great thing for Joe. He could have sulked and moved on, but he didn’t. He worked hard, took over as our number one last season and ended up winning us the penalty shoot-out which was great for him and us. That was a welcome boost to get that trophy back to Bellslea.
Our league form was up and down the whole season really. We didn’t lose much but, in the end, we drew too many games which cost us. As a side, we had a very good run in the Scottish Cup. We went to Edinburgh to play a very good Civil Service Strollers side who play in the Lowland League. After a tight game we prevailed 2-1 which set up a home tie against Stranraer from League Two. They were a very good side, but we defended well and took our chances when they came which saw us win the game. This was a great day for everyone at the club which saw us awarded a home tie with Championship side Arbroath. We competed well with them but lost the match 2-0 with the real difference being their experienced striker, Bobby Linn. He was a different level and scored both their goals, one of which was very late on. Scottish Cup runs are good, so thankfully we gave the fans a couple of memorable games.
We then won the Aberdeenshire Shield which was against Buckie Thistle. Prior to this final we had our main keeper Joe injured and had a race against time for him to be fit. He didn’t pass a fitness test on the night so we had to go with youngster Sam Inglis, against arguably the best attacking side in the league. In all honesty he had very little to do over the game and was well protected by Brian Hay and Kieran Simpson, who were both immense. We started the game very well and went in front, but Buckie scored in the second half to go 1-1. It looked like another penalty shoot-out but with almost the last move, Ross Aitken got down the wing and put in a great cross which Sean Butcher got his head to, and with a bit of luck on the way, it ended in the net. Perfect time to score a winner as Buckie didn’t get much time to get an equaliser. We probably deserved it over the piece, and it was great to get another trophy on board. Like I alluded to, our league form wasn’t as it was last year but we did have some enjoyable games and with a bit more luck could have turned some draws in to wins.
That’s a quick summary of our first team but let’s not forget they are only a part of the club as a whole. We also compete on an U21s and an U18s league. Our 18s were predominantly made up of 16-year-olds but they held their own in a competitive league. Some very good players in the squad which two of, Josh Hawkins and Callum Kelly went on to make their debuts in the first team. The majority of the U18s also appeared throughout the season for our U21s side. They did really well in the league only losing one game which meant they ended on top and added the Aberdeenshire League to the Shield and Cup won by the first team. We are the first club in the history to hold all three Aberdeenshire trophies at once which is an incredible achievement.
So, all in all another season goes by where we have been lucky to have added more medals to the players collections. We have some younger players coming through as we build up for another title charge this term in what will be an extremely difficult season.
I will end by thanking firstly the players for all their efforts over the last 12 months. We try and make it as close to a professional environment as we can for part time players, and I know I can be quite demanding, so for all your continued efforts gents I thank you. To all the back-room team from James, Antony, Alex, Paul and Sarah, the youth coaches and of course the community team I again thank you all for playing such an important part in our club. You all work tirelessly and are a credit to how you conduct yourselves and the lengths you go to for our club. To the committee and directors, from the Boss, Finlay, to those serving refreshments, again a huge thank you for allowing me to do the work I do. Finally, the biggest thanks you to you guys, the fans. We are a very fortunate club where no matter if we are playing in a cup final or if it’s an end of season game in the wind and rain, you come out in your numbers to support the team and do everything in your power to be the twelfth man. The environment you guys create for us to perform in front of is truly up there with the best so thank you. Here’s to doing it all again next season. Thank you all.
All the Best, Mark

We’re delighted to give the opportunity to Nathan Robb to represent Fraserburgh FC at the forthcoming eScottish Cup at Hampden Park on 21st May.
Nathan is 18 years old and lives in Balmedie. He went to Bridge of Don Academy and is currently studying Games Development at Aberdeen College.
Speaking to us about the tournament :
I’ve had a keen interest in playing FIFA since 2014 when I got my first Xbox and regularly play through the week where my goal is the weekend online FUT (FIFA Ultimate Team) champions. The challenge is to play 20 online matches against fellow competitors, and I regularly achieve rank 1/2.
In the last year I have changed platform from Xbox to PlayStation as there is more opportunity to take part in Esport events. I took part in Aberdeen’s first Esports tournament last year where I came 3rd and this year at the Beach Ballroom where I finished in the top 8.
I’m honoured to represent Fraserburgh in the Esports tournament at Hampden Park. The competition requires 2 players and therefore I will be partnering up with my cousin, Jadon Robb who also shares this interest in FIFA.
On the day of the tournament, we will have an early drive to Glasgow, so we have plenty time to discuss in-game tactics. We’ve been working together in preparation for some time now.
Nathan is hoping this will be the start of many more tournaments to come.
The eScottish Football Cup is a professional console gaming tournament, working with both professional and grassroot gamers to bring a new era of esports to Scotland. The tournament is run by eRena Sports.
The tournament is for players with an active FIFA 23 FUT squad with no Loan/Concept Players, with an active PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscription.
The event will be streamed from the eRena Sports YouTube Channel.
FROM OUR CLUB CAPTAIN – WILLIAM WEST
Overall, it has been a good season with plenty to celebrate. To win the trio of Aberdeenshire trophies is no mean feat and shows that our current group as well as our youth development is in a good place for the future.
However, the squad was disappointed in the defence of our title, but we are as motivated as ever to make up for that next season.
We've said goodbye to a few colleagues this season but have brought in quality replacements in Josh and Connor who have fitted into our culture well and will be exciting players to watch next season. Its also Ross's 1st full season and he is proving to be an excellent signing from Mark and Bax as well as his mate Greg who has returned to the club and improved the group with his range of passing and enthusiasm.
During the 2022/23 season we managed to recognise the commitment and dedication of Bryan and Paul with their testimonials which was great to be part of.
I was personally proud of the team's efforts in the Scottish Cup beating league opposition and putting a good account of ourselves against Arbroath.
Ryan Sargent and Keiran Simpson have continued their impressive development establishing themselves as 1st team regulars, but it would be great for some of the current Aberdeenshire League Champions to follow in their footsteps.
Lots to be thankful for but also plenty of drive and ambition from the squad to push on next season
Willie
FROM OUR HEAD OF OUR YOUTH –
MATTHEW WEST
Overall, it has been a great year for our youth set up at the club. We made some changes to our programme for the U18s this season primarily to get more time together on the training field. It's been a demanding and challenging schedule. The response from the players has been excellent in both commitment and attitude throughout.
At this stage of their careers, results in our matches are not of utmost importance. The result we are all striving towards is to see these guys break through into the first team. That said, winning games breeds confidence and validates our work - For the guys to secure a 5th place finish in the U18s East Section league and Win the GPH Builders Merchant U21s league is a terrific effort and well deserved.
Our senior youth players have spent the season on loan at local junior clubs with good feedback and progress throughout. All have had a strong contribution during their loan club's campaigns. We are forever grateful for our relationships with the local junior clubs who share our ambition for young players to develop in the game.
For the younger members of the youth set-up these guys have played juvenile football within the ADJFA. A number of these guys are part of Peterhead Boys Club 2007 who Managed by former Broch Player Scott Mackie, are this season's ADJFA U16 A-League champions. An achievement which we are very proud of our players to be part of.
Ahead of the summer we are excited to bolster our squad with a number of guys from the foundation phase making the step up to U18s. The senior youth players will also join up with Mark and the 1st team squad for pre-season, which is a fantastic opportunity and one which we hope will prove pivotal as they continue their football journey with us.
The regular involvement of our youth players within the 1st team set up across training and games throughout the season is crucial. We are excited to see what the future holds for each of them in the season ahead.

3. “My personal ambition is to leave a legacy of making a lasting impact and positive contribution to the growth and success of our Club. From a Club point of view, it’s important that we build on the success of recent seasons on the park, for local lads to continue to be the backbone of our Club and continue the great work of all at FFC in the Community.
Starting the season as Highland League champions, we knew that it was going to be a difficult task to retain the trophy, “everyone wants to beat the defending champions”.
In July the Bellslea has never looked better, after all the upgrades on and off the park during the close season.
A massive thanks go to Martin Gray and Bobby Cowe and all the people who have helped them in make the Bellslea look so good.
The season started off without the normal pre-season friendly’s, we had qualified for the Premier Sports Scottish League Cup for the first time, games against Kilmarnock, Montrose, Stenhousemuir and Partick Thistle gave us a tough start to the season, we failed to gain any points, but it gave Mark a chance to shuffle the pack and give some of the young players their debuts for the club, it also brought some much-needed revenue to the Bellslea.
We started off well enough in the League, but our first big test was a 2 goal to 1 defeat away from home to Buckie Thistle.
August was a good month for us, we won all our games apart from an early exit from the SPFL Challenge Trust Cup at the hands of St Johnston B. September was a mixed bag of results, the highlights were a 2 goals to 1 victory away in Edinburgh against Civil Service Strollers in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup, September also had a great finish to it as we defeated Formartine United by 3 goals to 2 on penalties in the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final at Turriff, the game finished in a 1 all draw after 90 mins, we have now won the Aberdeenshire Cup 3 times in the last 4 years. October was fabulous for us as we went undefeated from start to finish, the highlight was a 2 goals to 1 victory at home to Stranraer in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup.
November brought a mix of results, the worst parts were a 2 goal to 1 defeat by Inverurie Locos in the Highland League Cup 1st round, we also lost by 2 goals to nil against Montrose in the Scottish Cup 3rd round, the highlight was a 1 goal to nil victory at home against Buckie Thistle in the League. Much of December was wiped out because of the weather, Bryan Hay had a testimonial game against St Johnston on the first Sunday of the month.
Bryan has now played 510 games for the Broch, he is now sixth equal with Michael Stephen in the all-time appearance charts, Derek Milne in 5th place is next in his sights at 519.
The New Year saw a break in the fixtures due to the weather, the best part was a 4 goal to nil victory away to Inverurie Locos in the Highland League. February was brilliant apart from a home defeat to Turriff United, we defeated Brora Rangers 1 nil away in the League, we also defeated Buckie Thistle by 2 goals to 1 in the Aberdeenshire Shield Final at Kynoch Park Keith. In the under 21 League the Broch finished in 1st place for the first time since 1999, the team won 7, drew 1 and only lost their last game against Dyce. They scored 30 goals and conceded 15.
Zaine Laird was their top scorer with 11 goals from only 6 games played. All at the supporter’s club would like to congratulate everyone in the coaching staff and all the players who took part in the league winning season, it’s great to see the Aberdeenshire League Trophy back at the Bellslea.
The under 18’s finished in 4th place having won 8, drawn none and lost 6. Inverurie Locos won it and well done to them. They scored 32 goals and conceded 23.
Callum Kelly was their top scorer with 8 goals from 13 games played. Paul Leask has decided due to work commitments to immigrate to Australia, All at the Broch supporter’s club would like to thank Paul for all he has done for the club during his long career, we thank him for the past and wish him, Chelsea and the family all the best for the future.
March was once again a mixed set of results, a 3-nil loss to Banks O’ Dee at home was the worst part of it.
April saw Brechin City crowned as the new Highland League Champions after a last gasp win at Buckie, we received our worst defeat by 5 goals to nil away at Brechin who were worthy Champions, we finished the campaign with two victories at the Bellslea.
Well done to everyone involved with Brechin City on winning the League and commiserations to Buckie Thistle who ran them so close.
On behalf of all Broch supporters, we would like to thank Mark, his coaching staff and all the players for another fantastic season which resulted in winning the Aberdeenshire Cup and Shield, we played a record 51 games whilst scoring 119 goals in all competitions for the season, Scott Barbour was top scorer with 27 goals from an incredible 50 appearances.
Scott has now scored 228 goals for the Broch and he is closing in on Michael Stephens record of 237, a record that hopefully will be broken next season, “the earlier the better Scott”.
Thanks must go to Alice and Amber and their staff in the sponsors lounge for providing many Sunday morning “sare heids”.
Thanks, must also go to Bobby and the lads who help in producing a playing surface, which every year gets better.
We would also like to thank Finlay, the Broch committee and the many other people who help the club in any shape or form, without your tireless efforts we would never be as successful as we have been, we hope that next season is half as good as this one was.
As far as the Broch Supporters Club goes, after winning the league last season this was a very successful season for us, with a record number of over 200 members, we also ran a record number of 22 buses to 24 away games, the committee members often took fans in cars to save the cost of an additional bus.
The club is not run for profit, so the buses that make money go to offsetting the ones that lose money, a highlight was running a bus to Brora who put on soup and sandwiches for us, all fans had an excellent day out, though the win may have helped!
We also ran an almost full bus to Brechin on a Wednesday night, so hopefully we will manage a Saturday game next season against them. The buses have been very well supported by fans with an average of 40 fans per bus, this meant we did not have to put up travel costs in these extremely difficult times.
We must thank Ian and his staff at Kineal Coaches for providing us with excellent transport to all our away games during the season. We look forward to another successful season next season with our AGM being on Saturday 27th May at 6PM in the Elizabethan Bar.

Referees are a vital part of football and as the Scottish FA seeks to continually grow and develop the Scottish game, there is a constant need to recruit and develop referees.
The minimum age to become a qualified referee in Scotland is 16.
Refereeing can be a highly rewarding challenge, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle as well as significantly contributing to the development of the game. Referees operate at all levels– from grassroots football right through to the Scottish Professional Football League and international matches.
Introductory Referee Course
The Introductory Referee Course is delivered on behalf of the Scottish FA by the 12 Referees’ Associations throughout the country.
Course fee
£35 (includes the first season’s membership fee) £15 for concessions (students and unemployed persons)
The course length is generally between eight and 10 weeks for two hours per night. The courses are held twice a year in the January to March and September to December periods. Other courses may be held outside this schedule depending on local circumstances and demand.
There are two parts to the Introductory Course. The first is classroom-based learning on the Laws of the Game with an exam in the final week. The exam is conducted on computers at the course venue and involves multiple choice questions, report writing and assessing match incidents on video.
The second part involves officiating a match under the guidance of a more experienced referee. Once part two is completed, candidates are able to join the local Referees’ Association and become a Scottish FA registered referee.
Support is given to new referees by their Referees’ Association and a mentor will be arranged to provide guidance in the early stages of their refereeing careers. Direction will also be given on suitable leagues to commence refereeing.

At the start of the course the candidate will be given the choice of, one of the 12 referee associations from which to join.
