Bryan Hay is welcomed onto the Bellslea pitch by a guard of honour from Fraserburgh FC and St. Johnstone FC with his son Finlay and nephew Travis.
Hayzer, who is widely regarded as one of the best centre halfs in the Highland League, celebrated his testimonial year with a number of events culminating in a match against the Perth side at the start of December.
It was a fitting end to the year for the 33 year old defender who has spent 18 years with the club, making his debut against Keith on 30th December 2006. He is nearing 500 appearances and has netted 24 times in a Broch shirt.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN
FINLAY NOBLE
Welcome to our Festive Edition of the Magazine and I hope as you are reading this you have had an enjoyable Christmas.
I think it is fair to say that the past few years have been difficult for most and utterly awful for others. At the start of 2022 we were all just wishing that it would be better than what we had seen since the Pandemic started.
While it still proved difficult, as the year progressed, we started to get back to some sort of normality.
On the park, I don’t think we could have asked for much more without being greedy. We have played 53 games, not including the Formartine United one on 30th of this month, losing only 12. Six of those 12 have been against SPFL opposition, Kilmarnock, Stenhousemuir, Partick Thistle, Montrose, St Johnstone and Arbroath, we scored five times in those games. A seventh was against Bonnyrigg Rose in the Pyramid Play Off. I don’t think in any of those games we disgraced ourselves. Domestically we played 43 games, winning 33 with five defeats and five draws. Scored 125 and conceded 34. Not a bad year irrespective of how our last game of the year goes.
To win the league was a fantastic achievement and easily the highlight of the year. That doesn’t come around very often, so it needs to be celebrated, and rightly so, but it must be done with dignity and to remain humble. I think we have done that quite well, but that is how the club works. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
When we won the league in 2002, I remember that a possible scenario was us winning the league without playing and I said I didn’t care how we won it, so long as we did. The League could have posted the trophy to us as far as I was concerned given it had been 64 years since we had last been champions. As it was, we won it at Allan Park with a 2-1 win over Cove Rangers in our last game in front of a very large travelling support. Having experienced that I admitted at the time to being a little jealous of those who had won it in front of their own supporters in their home ground. We have now managed that. It took us 20 years, but it was well worth the wait.
That day in April at Bellslea in front of a capacity crowd is something that will live in my memory for ever. Personally, absolutely brilliant to be club Chairman celebrating a League Title, but taking a step back and looking at players, coaching team and their families celebrating together with the supporters was something else. That’s the heart of our club and to see it beating so healthily that day proves we are doing something right here at Bellslea Park. For our wee club to be able to give so much joy to people in our community is great.
In September we won the Aberdeenshire Cup for the 13th time and again it was good to see everyone celebrating together. Everyone knows the how historic a trophy the Aberdeenshire Cup is, and it is great to see it proudly in our boardroom.
We have had a few personal milestones at the club in 2022, eight players have made their debuts (Jordan Guild, Connor Grant, Jamie MacLellan, Ross Taylor, Ethan Sutherland, Kye Wood, Connor Wood and Callum Kelly) and we also have Josh Bolton who signed a couple of weeks back.
Logan Watt, Zane Laird and Ross Aitken all scored their first goals for the club while Scott Barbour netted his 200th.
Lewis Davidson, Sean Butcher and Kieran Simpson all made their 100th appearance. Paul Young made his 150th, Jamie Beagrie his 200th, Scott Barbour and Ryan Cowie their 300th. However, club captain William West made his 600th appearance and only the third player to do so at the club alongside Billy Gordon and Jimmy Young.
After all that, we had Bryan Hay having his Testimonial Year, which was very well supported, and I am sure it has been a success for him and his family. It isn’t all about the money but an opportunity for the supporters to show their appreciation for good service to the club.
Off the park we have a marvellous team of volunteers who do the things that nobody really sees. The lassies who look after the Boardroom and Hospitality so brilliantly and give our visitors a great welcome, the Gate Staff who are out in all weathers, the ground staff who keep the park looking so well, the committee guys and board members who thanklessly keep the club ticking along. We are all in it together but are always on the look out for folk to join our club so don’t be shy. It is hard work and doesn’t always seem like it gets rewarded, but we all get to enjoy the good times the players and staff allow us to have. It is a well-used saying but at our level it really is a case of as a club we win together and lose together. Over the years we have been lucky enough to have more wins than losses and long may that continue.
We look forward to 2023 and would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Supporters, Advertisers and Sponsors for the continued backing we receive from you all. Best wishes for the New Year from me and all the rest of the Directors. Lang may yer lum reek.
Come awa the Broch Finlay
Pictured here is me with Ian Smith and the two trophies won in 2022, the Aberdeenshire Cup and the Highland League Trophy. In the background looking down on us is the late Jimmy Adams.
Ian joined the club in 1980 after Jimmy took control in 1979. In 1981 they appeared at my home to ask my mam if she would let me join the club to clean the boots. Thankfully she said yes.
In January 2000 Ian passed the Secretary job to me. To this day Ian is still keeping me on my toes but more importantly keeping my feet on the ground and not letting me forget the ethos of the club we all support.
Ian looks after our guests in the boardroom on a match day in his own special way and he makes sure they all leave having been looked after. Maybe they don’t always leave as sure footed as they arrived !!
FROM THE MANAGER MARK COWIE
We have a had a mixed bag of results over the last few weeks Towards the end of November, we played Arbroath in the Scottish Cup where we were eventually defeated 2-0 by the Championship side. I think we came out of this game with our heads held high. We gave it a proper go and it took a last-minute goal to kill the tie. Up until then we were very much in the game and had a couple of chances which had they gone in might have given us something to defend. The difference on the day was Bobby Linn and in particular his movement. We do not come up against this quality of opponent every week and I think if you watched him closely you would have seen what is required to play at a higher level. His movement and awareness of where the space was for both his goals was quite brilliant and we didn’t really match him on these occasions It was another good experience for the team and one which I hoped would allow us to kick in for the rest of the season
We followed this one up with a disappointing 2-2 draw at Keith. I think in the end a draw was a fair result as Keith fought for everything and made it very difficult for us. They spurned a couple of chances they probably feel they should have done better with, but we also missed a number of opportunities and the goals we conceded were from our own mistakes. These things happen and unfortunately it took us a few weeks to get the opportunity to try and put it right as we had a couple of home games fall victim of the weather.
Our next game would be up at Formartine as part one of the festive double header. During that game you could see that we hadn’t played that much as we were a bit slow to start and just couldn’t get going right away. We eventually started to take control of the game and managed to get a goal through Jamie who reacted quickest in the box to fire the ball home Formartine are a very good side so we knew we would have to withstand pressure from them, especially at set pieces however on the whole I think we defended really well and handled all they threw at us. Tonight, will be more of the same in that it will be two pretty evenly matched teams going up against each other for the win but hopefully in front of our home support we can put on the performance that it will take and hopefully get something from the game
During the last month we have moved a player on whilst taking another in. Paul Campbell advised us during contract talks that he was looking for a new challenge and eventually agreed a move to Formartine United. PC has been a huge part of our success over the years and has done very well during his spell at the club. His stats speak for themselves, and he has all the tools to be the player we know he is capable of. He moved with our best wishes.
We moved quickly to bring in Josh Bolton from Aberdeen East End JFC who were excellent to deal with We have been keeping an eye on Josh for quite some time and with Paul moving we saw an opportunity to bring him in. He has shown up very well in training so far and we are excited to see him on the pitch. He has a great awareness when playing and can link up play very well. I’m sure he will flourish here and prove to be another great find. All the best Josh at FFC.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the staff, players, committee, supporters and sponsors of the club a very Happy New Year when it comes
Mark
FROM OUR HEAD OF OUR YOUTH –MATTHEW WEST
Overall it has been a very positive year for the youth set up at the club.
We have welcomed a talented group of players into our foundation phase age group, they have been attending sessions throughout the season, we see a lot of potential and are really excited to see these guys develop in the coming year.
For the u18s squad these guys form the squads which play on Monday nights and train every Wednesday.
Although the measure of success is not based on results but more the result of how many of these guys end up in the 1st team - overall this year, on both sets of criteria, the outcomes have been favourable.
The youth team currently sit top in the 21s League and mid-table in the 18s League. The level of commitment and attitude from the youth players throughout the season has been excellent. This year we significantly increased the training programme and the response from the group to such a demanding schedule has been terrific. We are seeing huge progress from it.
Throughout the season we have received across all levels very positive feedback on our players from their loan club managers and seen steady progress on them individually. We are grateful for the support we receive from local juvenile and junior clubs to allow our youth players to continue to play games on a Saturday which is key to their development.
It has been great to see guys from the youth set up turn out for the first team this year including Callum Kelly, Ethan Sutherland, Kyle Wood, Ross Taylor + Sam Inglis.
A big focus for our 18s squad has been to work closer alongside the 1st team. Training games, mixed sessions and opportunities for all the guys to go up and train with the senior team have been frequent in order to help ready the younger lads for making the step up in the future.
As we head into 2023 this will increase. By doing so we hope the guys can continue the good form collectively as a team in both leagues. We will continue to support and challenge these young players individually in order to help ready them for the first team environment.
Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Huntly v Fraserburgh, Christie Park
Wednesday 2nd November 2022
Huntly had the first effort of the game when Cameron Blacklock’s swirling cross came back off the crossbar. On 14 minutes Ross Aitken went on a driving run which ended with Logan Watt seeing his shot saved by Fraser Hobday, after Paul Campbell had just failed to get on the end of the initial cross. Four minutes later Watt’s cross was met by the head of Kieran Simpson but this time it was the visitors who had cause to rue the woodwork as the defender’s effort smacked off the crossbar. Simpson was denied again on 23 minutes when Scott Barbour found space on the left to cross but Hobday was in the right position to pull off a great save.
Huntly came close on 27 minutes when Adam Hunter found Adam Morris inside the penalty area but the shot was deflected wide for a corner. The woodwork was playing a big part in the game and on 33 minutes a swirling cross by William West came back off the crossbar to Barbour who couldn’t force home the rebound. A minute later Campbell released Barbour and the Broch striker poked the ball beyond Hobday and into the net to give the visitors the lead. Huntly levelled on 39 minutes when Hunter found Callum Murray with a pass at the edge of the penalty area and he swept the ball past Joe Barbour in the Fraserburgh goal. The Broch had one more chance before the break when Paul Young crossed to the back post where Sean Butcher saw his diving header go wide.
Half Time: Huntly 1 Fraserburgh 1 Paul Young tested Hobday from 25 yards two minutes into the second half with the Huntly keeper getting a fingertip to the ball to turn it round the post. On 54 minutes Morris tripped Campbell inside the box and the Broch striker made no mistake from the spot to regain the lead for the Broch. The visitors were in total control and Butcher flicked the ball onto Young who saw another shot pushed away by Hobday.
The third goal was only delayed by seconds though as Barbour’s corner was cleared off the line by the home defence, West was on hand the head the rebound home. Huntly had a chance on 70 minutes to reduce the leeway when the ball broke to Michael Clark after a corner had been cleared but he poked the ball over the crossbar. Simpson tried his luck from a free-kick on 78 minutes which Hobday somehow managed to tip over the crossbar. Right at the death Barbour’s through ball was deflected by a home defender and Hobday did well to save, the rebound broke to Young who tucked the ball home to complete the scoring.

Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club December News
Congratulations to Bryan Hay who played his 494th game for the Broch at home against Arbroath, Bryan is now ninth in the all-time appearance charts, Graeme Johnston is eighth on 502, Kenny Rogers is seventh on 505 and Michael Stephen is sixth on 510. A reminder that Bryan Hay’s testimonial game has been arranged and will take place against St Johnston on Sunday 4th December with a 2pm kick-off, let’s hope that a bumper crowd turns out for it as he certainly deserves it. Congratulations must also go to Logan Watt who played his 50th game for the Broch last month in the 4 – 1 victory at Huntly, Logan has scored 9 goals for the Broch in his 54 appearances to date.
Early last month we were away to Huntly on a Wednesday night, we managed to win the game by 4 goals to 1 on a tricky surface, a goal each for Scott Barbour, Paul Campbell, Willie West and Paul Young secured the points. The following Saturday we were off to Mosset Park Forres, we dominated the game and went 1 goal up in the first half through an own goal, Community Coach Claire Batty volunteered to run the line in the second half after the assistant referee went lame, well done to Claire for letting the game get completed, unfortunately, we were pegged back in the second half and failed to convert any of our chances so the game finished as a draw.
We lost to Inverurie Locos in the Highland League Cup in mid-November by 2 goals to 1, we had a poor first half and then could not finish any chances late on in the game, Sean Butcher scored our only goal of the game. On the Wednesday night we defeated Aberdeen University by 4 goals to nil in the Aberdeenshire shield, we started the game with a young team, Ryan Sargent and Logan Watt scored a goal each before Scott Barbour came on as a substitute and scored within seconds, he notched a second to put us through to the semi-final, for the semi-final we are away to Huntly in the New Year.
The under 18’s played away at Huntly in the Youth League, they lost the game by 2 goals to nil. We had a great home win against Buckie Thistle in the league, it was a match that we could not afford to lose if we were to have any hope of retaining our crown, Scott Barbour blocked a clearance and then slotted the rebound home early on to give us a lead, he could have doubled our advantage soon after but the keeper saved his penalty, our defence were superb as Buckie failed to create any clear-cut chances during the rest of the game.
We played Arbroath in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup last Saturday, early chances were not converted and we paid the price when Arbroath sneaked a goal in the first half, strong claims for offside were ignored by the match officials, as we chased the game Arbroath finished the game off with a late second, good luck to them in the next round where they face Motherwell at home.
We will be running a bus to the Keith game on Saturday 3rd December which will leave the Elizabethan at 12:45pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others. We will also be running a bus to the Formartine United game on Friday 23rd December which will leave the Elizabethan at 5:45pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others.
Please note that all seats on all buses must be booked by contacting Kenny McDonald at the supporter’s club, details can be found on our web pages.
We hope to attract new members to the supporter’s club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year.
Non-members are also very welcome to travel to games but they will have to pay an extra £2. Our bus info page will tell you the cost and times of bus travel, we leave for home right after the final whistle. As this is the last news post of the year, all at the supporter’s club would like to wish you a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

FORMARTINE UNITED
Formartine United are a semi-professional football club from the village of Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Our home games are played at North Lodge Park, located on the outskirts of the village, and just 10 miles North of the city of Aberdeen. Our adventure began in 1948 when the village team joined the Aberdeenshire Amateur League. Having achieved reasonable success, we progressed to Junior football in 1960 and most recently, in 2009, joined the Scottish Highland Football League.
Formartine is actually a committee area in Aberdeenshire, the district extending north from the River Don to the River Ythan. The original village club was known as Pitmedden and the reasons behind the choice of name for the new club have never been clear. The club were admitted to a newly expanded Highland League in 2009.
In 2013 the club won the much-coveted Aberdeenshire Cup, their first success at senior level. Prior to this the club won the North of Scotland Amateur Cup once and the North Regional Cup once. The club has three times been runner-up in the Highland League - in 2012–13, 2015–16 and 2017–18. They hold the record for the most goals scored in a Highland League season with 137 in 2015–16.

Scottish Highland Football League, Forres Mechanics v Fraserburgh, Mosset Park
Saturday 5th November 2022
Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Forres Mechanics v Fraserburgh, Saturday 5th November 2022
In the early exchanges home goalkeeper Stuart Knight did well to repel a Greg Buchan free-kick and Paul Young’s strike from 12 yards out. But the custodian was powerless to prevent the Broch taking the lead after half an hour as Can-Cans captain Martin Groat glanced Scott Barbour’s free-kick from the right into his own net.
Six minutes later Shaun Morrison sent Ben Barron through and with goalkeeper Joe Barbour off his line, the striker lobbed the ball onto the roof of the net. At the other end Knight made a good save from Jamie Beagrie’s header.
Assistant referee Andy Stephenson suffered a suspected Achilles injury five minutes prior to half-time and was unable to continue. After an appeal to the crowd Claire Batty, Fraserburgh community coach, who has completed the SFA’s refereeing course stepped forward to run the line.
Half Time: Forres Mechanics 0 Fraserburgh 1
Forres equalised on 65 minutes. Morrison did well initially to find space on the right side of the area and his low shot was parried by Barbour. The Forres player was first to get onto the loose ball and squared for Barron to tap home from close range.
Fraserburgh tried to turn the screw after that. Sean Butcher was flagged offside when netting with a header, Knight made a fine stop to keep out Kieran Simpson’s header and a poor touch let Zane Laird down when presented with a sight of goal. For Forres, Callum Johnston fired just wide from 14 yards out and an excellent last-ditch intervention from Ross Aitken denied the hosts in the dying embers.

AWAY DAYS, SATURDAY 7TH JANUARY, DEVERONVALE, PRINCESS ROYAL PARK, BANFF
Deveronvale Football Club are a senior association football club currently playing the Highland Football League in Scotland. They were founded in 1938 and play their football at the Princess Royal Park in the town of Banff, (formerly Banffshire, now officially Aberdeenshire), Scotland. The club was formed in 1938 when Deveron Valley and Banff Rovers joined together. The name comes from the River Deveron, which has its mouth at Banff.
After they were formed, it took them one year to get into the Highland League. In August 1939, Deveronvale played their first league game. Their first win came a month later. In 1948 Deveronvale signed James ‘Jimmy’ Williamson from Dunipace Juniors, Jimmy would go on to play for Deveronvale for 7 years and in the process set the record for highest number of individual goals in the Highland League at 197 goals. The crest of Deveronvale FC was designed during the early 1970s by local schoolteacher, Mr. Chris Murray. He chose a 'heraldic' seagull to represent the twin fishing towns of Banff and Macduff.
In 2003 the Vale won the Highland League title for the first time in their history and repeated this feat once more three years later. Due to them being a senior team, they can play in the Scottish Cup. In the 2006–07 season, Deveronvale made it into the fourth round of the Scottish Cup after a 5–4 defeat of Third Division side Elgin City, before going out at home to First Division side Partick Thistle. In the 2011–12 season, Deveronvale entered the Scottish Challenge Cup for the first time. The club celebrated its 80th anniversary in the 2018-19 season.

Fraserburgh v Aberdeen University, Bellslea Park

After a fairly uneventful start to the game Paul Campbell and Callum Kelly combined on 19 minutes to set up a chance which the former flashed wide of goal. A minute later Zane Laird found Kelly with a clever pass but the young Broch striker saw his curling shot go past the far post.
Aberdeen Uni survived a scare on 25 minutes when a scramble inside their area ensued after Jamie Beagrie’s header had been blocked, William West and Campbell both saw their efforts thwarted by a dogged visitor’s defence
Ryan Sargent then sliced a shot wide from Laird’s cross on 32 minutes before the winger finally broke the deadlock on 45 minutes when he collected a Greg Buchan pass on the left of the penalty area and fired a shot past Ben Barbour into the far corner. Sargent almost turned provider just before the half time whistle when Campbell got on the end of the cross but Barbour made the save with his face.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Aberdeen University 0
Two minutes after the break Laird tried his luck from distance and substitute keeper Frederik Bjerregaard was happy to see the Broch striker’s long range effort fly just over the crossbar. Uni’s first chance came on 50 minutes when Oscar Forbes shot went just wide of Paul Leask’s near post.
Two minutes later Logan Watt double the home side’s lead when he clipped the ball home after Campbell had picked him out with a pinpoint pass. Scott Barbour was introduced into the fray on the hour and took less than a minute to make his mark turning home the ball after Bjerregaard had gifted him the ball.
The Broch’s leading scorer scored a second on 82 minutes firing home a rebound after Campbell had seen his shot saved by Bjerregaard. West went close two minutes later picking the ball up in midfield before striding forward and smashing a 25 yarder off the crossbar.

GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup,
First Round
Fraserburgh v Inverurie Loco Works, Bellslea Park
Saturday 12th November 2022
Goals from Nathan Meres and Garry Wood earned Inverurie Loco Works their second win over Fraserburgh at Bellslea this season. The 2-1 victory earned the visitors a place in the quarter-finals of the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup where they will meet Turriff United at The Haughs.
Inverurie boss Richard Hastings said “we followed our game plan to a tee and could have been further ahead at half-time. We asked the players for more of the same in the second half, and they did exactly that.”
Locos went in front on the half-hour mark, Meres cutting in from the left onto a Sam Burnett pass to rifle a low drive from 20 yards inside Joe Barbour’s right-hand post.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Inverurie Loco Works 1
The visitors grabbed a crucial second goal from the penalty spot on 50 minutes. Jamie Beagrie fouled Garry Wood in the area and he got to his feet to slam home the spot-kick low into the left-hand corner of the net.
Fraserburgh pulled one back in the 69th minute, Paul Young working his way superbly to the by-line and his low cross was flicked home from close range by Butcher at the front post. Butcher missed a glorious chance to equalise 15 minutes from the end, blasting wide from only 8 yards out, then Scott Barbour smacked a volley against the crossbar with Andy Reid beaten.
Broch manager Mark Cowie said “You can make excuses, but if you only perform for 20 minutes in a game, you’re not going to win.”

AWAY DAYS, SATURDAY 14TH
BRECHIN CITY, GLEBE PARK
JANUARY
Brechin City Football Club was established in 1906, when a deputation from the Forfarshire Football Association met local sportsmen in the Temperance Hall in City Road, and after some persuasion, it was decided that a Senior club was advisable. Two Junior clubs, Hearts and Harp, had been doing very well in their sphere, and it was suggested that here lay the nucleus of a first-class organisation
It was felt that a Senior team in the Ancient City would enhance the prestige of the Forfarshire Football Association. At that time, the Northern League was a good going provincial concern, and it was strongly emphasised that it would welcome another addition to its ranks, and at the same time, the sport-minded citizens of Brechin would see a better class of football.
There had been a Brechin Club some years before, but as was the case with most country Clubs, there was a lack of real competitions to stir up interest, apart from the Qualifying and Scottish F.A. Cups, and the original Club, like so many others, fell by the wayside. In due course, Officials were elected. Mr Alexander Potter became President, and the Secretary was Mr R.N. Clift, who was considered to be a fine judge of a footballer. Mr Clift went on to become Secretary of the Forfarshire Football Association, and as such, was elected to be their Representative to The Scottish Football Association. George Cumming, a local journalist and printer was the Club Treasurer.
The Club was not long in gathering together what was considered to be a fine Provincial side. The Johnston brothers were a sturdy pair of backs, and there was Geordie Cobb and D.K. Smart. Dave Chapman, whose sons played for Brechin in later years was a goalkeeper of outstanding merit. There was also the one and only Frank Gray, who was a throw-in specialist - the admiration of his team-mates, and scourge of his opponents. Those were the days of the long run, hop, step and leap, and the ball was in the opposition goalmouth for a header, shot or scramble. Included in the front ranks was Wull Richardson, a go-ahead centre forward who went to Dundee and was turned into a winger.
When the Club first won the Forfarshire Cup, by defeating Arbroath F.C. nine of the players were local lads. The team was Balfour, Shand and Lyons, Knowles Findlay and Campbell, Easson Clark Glen Winter and Richardson.

Scottish FA Cup 3nd Round, Fraserburgh v Arbroath, Bellslea Park
Saturday 26th November 2022
The Broch started their Scottish Cup 3rd round match against Arbroath brightly with Scott Barbour putting in a dangerous cross into the visitor’s area which found Sean Butcher at the near post, but he sent his effort wide of the post.
The home side continued to press their higher league opponents and Barbour raced clear of a static defence past keeper Derek Gaston and his net bound shot from an acute angle was cleared off the line by Richard Little, the rebound fell to Lewis Davidson, and he saw his shot from the edge of the box headed clear by Scott Bitsindou.
On 13 minutes Barbour went close again with Gaston doing well to tip over the Broch striker’s effort. Two minutes later Arbroath posed their first serious threat when Little saw his shot blocked. On 17 minutes the visitors took the lead when Scott Allan threaded the ball through to Robert Linn who took the ball in stride before curling a shot past Joe Barbour.
Seven minutes before the break Marcel Oakley set up Michael McKenna but he could only screw the ball past the far post under pressure from Kieran Simpson. Two minutes later Ross Aitken was booked for a challenge on Allan.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Arbroath 1 Arbroath took control after the break and on 53 minutes Linn should have done better when released on the left, but his shot slipped past Barbour’s far post. Bryan Hay was yellow carded for simulation inside the visitor’s box and at the other end McKenna fired in a shot which just cleared the crossbar. Both sides made a number of substitutions as the match entered the final quarter. On 84 minutes Paul Young could not get enough purchase on a shot and it went tamely wide. Three minutes later Paul Campbell and Barbour combined on the left and the ball found its way to Connor Wood who managed to get a shot on the turn which Gaston did well to save.
As the Broch pushed forward for an equaliser Arbroath broke away with a long ball in behind the home defence and Linn slotted the ball past Barbour into the net. He almost netted again in injury time when Gaston’s long clearance found him in space but this time the Arbroath sharpshooter slid the ball past the post.

Scottish Highland Football Under 18 League - East, Huntly v Fraserburgh, Christie Park Monday 14th November 2022
The Broch youngsters got off to the worst possible start when Lucas Sey burst through in the second minute and was tripped by Sam Inglis. The Huntly striker got up and dusted himself down before dispatching the spot-kick into the net. On 16 minutes Callum Kelly was played through on goal but George Ritchie did well to save, Stuart Laird picked up the rebound only to see his shot cleared off the line and when Kelly recovered the loose ball his shot cannoned off the post to safety.
Eight minutes later Laird had an effort from 12 yards well saved by Ritchie at the second attempt. A minute after that Ross Taylor fizzed in a shot which was just too high. Inglis redeemed himself on 37 minutes when he tipped over a 20 yard drive from Daryl Webster. Two minutes before the break good work by Dylan Robertson set up Taylor who sliced his shot wide of goal from a good position.
Half Time: Huntly 1 Fraserburgh 0
Taylor found his way into the referee’s notebook on 54 minutes but six minutes later good harrying by the Broch forward set up a chance for Nicol Dall which the Huntly defence managed to clear away. Ricky Milne was booked on 62 minutes for a foul on Scott Cameron and from the resultant free-kick swung in by Ethan Walker Webster rose high to nod the ball into the net.
Joshua Hawkins set up a chance for Laird on 69 minutes which was saved again by the impressive Ritchie in the home goal. Inglis had to move smartly on 86 minutes to turn over a drive by Zander Zvegintzov and right at the death Taylor created a chance for Dall but once again it was saved by the Huntly keeper.

Broch
secure nap hand of contract extensions
Fraserburgh Football Club are delighted to announce that Paul Young, Ryan Cowie, William West and Zane Laird have agreed to renew their contracts until the summer of 2025 with Scott Barbour extending his contract until the summer of 2028.
Paul, Ryan, Willie and Scott were an integral part of last season’s Championship winning side whilst Zane has stepped up to the first team squad this season and netted his first goal for the club in the win at Strathspey Thistle back in August. Manager, Mark Cowie was keen to get all five to commit their futures to the club and was highly delighted that they did so.
Paul Young joined the club in the summer of 2017 from Turriff United and is homing in on 200 appearances for the Broch. He is seen as one of the most complete midfielders in the Highland League and has notched 32 goals to date.
Ryan Cowie also joined the club from Turriff United just over ten years ago and has become a mainstay at left back with over 300 matches behind him. His threat from set piece deliveries always makes him one to watch and he has bagged 27 goals for the club. Sadly, injuries have blighted this season for him so far but hopefully he is nearing full fitness again.
Scott Barbour’s exploits at the club need no introduction. 219 goals in 310 games to date and that does not take into account his time away at Formartine United!! Last season Scott was named Highland League Player of the Year which was a fitting accolade on his contribution to the title success. There has been no let up this season with another 18 goals scored, including last Saturday’s winner against Buckie Thistle.
Willie West’s contribution to the Broch over the last 19 years cannot be understated. Club captain, winner of multiple honours including lifting the League trophy against Forres Mechanics and now third behind Billy Gordon and Jimmy Young with 620 appearances for the club. He has also notched 164 goals which makes him fifth in the all-time goalscorers list only four behind Graham Johnston in fourth place.
At the other end of the spectrum Zane Laird is just starting out on his first team career. He has come through the ranks and been a prolific scorer in the U18 and U21 teams. His goals this season are one of the big reasons the U21s are top of the GPH Builders Merchants Aberdeenshire League after six matches. He is definitely one to watch for the future.

Watt signs contract extension Fraserburgh FC are delighted to announce another of their talented youngsters has put pen to a contract extension. Logan Watt has agreed a deal which will see him continue in a black and white shirt until at least the summer of 2024. The young midfielder has featured 26 times this season netting on 5 occasions including an acrobatic effort against Turriff United.
The former Aberdeen Youth player made his debut against Wick Academy in July 2019 and notched his first goal for the club against Lossiemouth in February 2022. He now totals 55 appearances & 9 goals overall and has the ability to be a real creative force in the Broch midfield, manager Mark Cowie is especially happy to have him on board for the next 19 months.
21 December 2022
One in One Out at Bellslea Fraserburgh FC are delighted to announce the signing of 23-year-old striker Josh Bolton from North Region Premier League side Aberdeen East End on a two-anda-half-year deal.
The young forward has previous Highland League experience with Keith and Inverurie Loco Works and like Connor Wood, who also made switch from East End to the Broch, Josh has been instrumental in the junior sides Scottish Cup run this season and keeping them in the Premier League title hunt having only suffered one defeat so far.
Manager, Mark Cowie was looking to add to his attacking options and Josh will provide excellent competition in that department. Everyone at Fraserburgh FC wishes Josh all the best in a Broch shirt.
Heading out is Paul Campbell who has agreed to make the switch to Formartine United. Paul has been with the Broch since 2015/16 ironically making his debut against the Pitmedden side. His first goal came in a 4-0 win at Lossiemouth in the League Cup, and he amassed 128 goals in 225 games, having made the step up from Junior football himself.
During Paul’s time with Fraserburgh FC he was a huge part of the title winning squad last season and won 3 Aberdeenshire Cup winner’s medals and 2 Aberdeenshire Shield winner’s medals, netting doubles in both the 2019/20 Shield Final and the 2020/21 Cup Final.
Everyone at Fraserburgh FC wishes Paul all the best for the future, apart from the next couple of matches!!

2022
Willie Donald – 1953 to 2022
We were saddened to learn of the passing of former Broch striker Willie Donald last month at the age of 68.
Willie played 61 times for the Broch in seasons 1978/79 and 1979/80 scoring 22 goals. Two of those goals came in the 6-2 Bells Cup Final win over Buckie Thistle at Bellslea Park on 17th May 1979.
He was signed by then manager Tommy McMillan and made his debut in a 3-0 defeat at Clach on 2nd September 1978, scoring his first goal the following week in a 4-1 victory at Bellslea Park against Lossiemouth. In a game also against Lossiemouth at Bellslea Park he scored four goals in a 7-2 win on 20th October 1979.
He also played with Aberdeen University, going on to feature in both Scottish and British university teams, going on to play Highland league for Peterhead, Fraserburgh and his hometown team, Huntly.
Willie was probably more famous in the cricketing world after playing for Scotland 58 times, including captaining his country at Lords., He played for Scotland from 1978-86, before going on to serving as President of Cricket Scotland (2018-20). He also served as President of Aberdeenshire cricket club where he was instrumental in getting the return of international matches to Mannofield in Aberdeen.

A large crowd was inside the Bellslea to see two of the top SHFL teams face off and it was the home side who almost got their noses in front on 9 minutes when Paul Young picked out Scott Barbour on the right and the Broch striker beat Lewis Mackinnon before firing just wide.
Midway through the half Barbour charged down a clearance by Ryan Fyffe and flicked the ball past Balint Demus to give the Broch the lead. On 25 minutes Lewis Davidson was tripped inside the box by Jack Murray but Demus kept out Barbour’s spot-kick with a fine save.
Bryan Hay went close on 27 minutes when his header from Davidson’s corner went just over the crossbar. Two minutes later Buckie had their first chance of the game when a free-kick was cleared only as far as Marcus Goodall however his shot went high over Joe Barbour’s goal.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Buckie Thistle 0
The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Jamie Beagrie picking up a loose ball 20 yards out and firing in a shot which fizzed past Demus’ far post. On 59 minutes Davidson and Beagrie were both thwarted by desperate blocks as the home side looked to double their lead.
On the hour Greg Buchan whipped in a corner which Sean Butcher managed to head wide. Barbour then tried to beat Demus with a free-kick but the Buckie keeper made a comfortable save. Demus was in action again on 67 minutes this time producing a fine save to deny William West’s long range shot.
Two minutes later Buckie substitute Sam Urquhart got the break of the ball inside the Broch area but saw his shot go agonisingly wide of Barbour’s near post. The game became a bit ragged with both sides having players booked for fouls one of which resulted in Davidson firing in a shot which Demus did well to hold onto. Right at the end Max Barry saw an effort fly just wide of goal.

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Keith v Fraserburgh, Kynoch Park
Saturday 3rd December 2022
The Broch started on the front foot with Connor Wood having the first shot at goal on 2 minutes over the crossbar. Four minutes later Logan Watt saw his effort from inside the penalty area deflected wide and from a Scott Barbour corner William West headed over after 9 minutes.
The visitors continued to create good chances with Sean Butcher and Greg Buchan combining to set up Watt, but the young midfielder saw his effort well saved by Craig Reid. Keith were dangerous on the break though and after a poor clearance by Kieran Simpson the ball broke to Kieran Mooney from Demilade Yunus, but the young winger drove the ball over from a good position.
The broke took the lead on 16 minutes with a goal of simplicity. West’s throw-in from the left found Paul Young in space and he drilled the ball past Reid from 20 yards. Three minutes later Keith almost levelled when Yunus chipped the ball into the box, but James Brownie headed off the crossbar. The Broch had one final chance before the break when Connor Wood played in West on the left his cross was met by Butcher’s head, but he could not direct the effort on target.
Half Time: Keith 0 Fraserburgh 1
The home side started the second half with a bang when Mooney rounded Joe Barbour to fire the ball home. Butcher went close with a header on 54 minutes after clever work between Young and Barbour set him up. Keith took the lead on 62 minutes after Mooney went on a mazy dribble before pulling the ball back for Yunus to slam the ball past Barbour into the net.
Mooney was tormenting the Broch defence and a ball in behind the centre halves saw the Keith youngster fire in a shot which just fizzed wide of Barbour’s far post. The Broch got a lifeline on 71 minutes when Young was pulled back inside the box, but Butcher’s penalty was too precise, and Reid made an easy save.
The visitors levelled on 78 minutes after a cross fell to him inside the Keith box and he lashed a left footer high into the net. After a raft of substitutions, the Broch had one last chance, but Ryan Sargent saw his shot blocked and Keith held on for a deserved draw.

The visitors were first to show attacking intent when Ryan Sargent played the ball down the left to Scott Barbour, but Jonathan Crawford got back to block the Broch’s leading scorer’s effort. On 15 minutes Joe Barbour did well to thwart Julian Wade pulling off a good save from close range.
Sean Butcher got clear of his marker, but he could not divert his header on target from Barbour’s corner on 20 minutes. The away side did take the lead on 35 minutes when another Barbour corner was only cleared to Jamie Beagrie 16 yards out and he rifled the ball past Ewen Macdonald in the Formartine goal.
Just before the break Barbour’s in swinging corner from the left found Bryan Hay at the back post, but his effort was blocked, the ball was worked back to Barbour who crossed again, and this time William West headed over from close range.
Half Time: Formartine United 0 Fraserburgh 1
The Broch started where they left off and Sargent created a chance for Butcher only for Macdonald to save. On 56 minutes Crawford saw his header from Graeme Rodger’s cross drift wide, then Paul Young tried his luck from outside the box which dipped over the crossbar on the hour.
The home side were starting to exert some pressure and Joe Barbour did well to block Crawford’s shot from the edge of the box with his legs. At the other end a long ball forward found Sargent on the left, he flicked the ball onto Barbour, but Macdonald blocked once again.
As the match drifted towards the last 15 minutes both sides made changes to freshen things up, Logan Watt presented Young with a chance but the Broch midfielder sclaffed his shot straight at Macdonald. Aaron Norris went close for Formartine on 87 minutes seeing his close-range drive blocked.
Formartine kept pushing for an equaliser and Rodger fired in a shot from the edge of the box which just fizzed over the crossbar. In injury time Ryan Cowie and Connor Wood combined to set up Young, but his net bound curler was brilliantly tipped round the post by the Formartine keeper.

All at the Broch Supporter’s Club would like to wish you a happy and healthy New Year, we hope you all had a great Christmas and are now raring to go for the rest of the season.
At the start of December, we were away at Keith in the League, after taking the lead with a great shot from Paul Young, it looked like we were going to lose the game after Keith struck 2 goals without reply, a wonder strike from Scott Barbour let us share the points.
Bryan Hay’s testimonial game took place against St Johnston on Sunday 4th December, the weather did not help him but there was still a healthy crowd braving the elements to see the team record a 2 goals to 1 victory against St. Johnstone, the game brings Bryan’s testimonial year to an end, let's hope he gets a few bob at the end of it, as he certainly deserves it.
We now look forward to Paul Leask’s testimonial year, which is just starting, please look at the club’s website and Facebook page for more information about events to come.
We were supposed to be at home to Lossiemouth in the League on the 10th December, a massive thank you to all the helpers who forked the pitch for 2 hours on the morning of the game, unfortunately the wet weather made the pitch unplayable, and their efforts went to waste. One week later, the water on the pitch for the Lossiemouth game had frozen and this resulted in the Strathspey Thistle game being called off on the Friday night.
It was sad to see that Paul Campbell had decided not to sign for the club and has now departed to Formartine United, Paul has been with the Broch for 7 years and has made a fantastic impact at the club. He made his debut for the Broch against Formartine on Saturday 16th January 2016, we drew the game 1 all, he scored his first goal for the club the week after in a 4-0 victory away at Lossiemouth. Paul played 225 games for the Broch and has scored an incredible 128 goals during that time; he is 11th in our all-time scorer’s charts for the club. He has had injury problems over the past year, and we all hope they clear up and he gets his career going again. All at the supporter’s club would like to wish Paul and his wife Tiffani all the best for the future and thank them for the past.
Josh Bolton has signed for the Broch, all supporters would like to welcome Josh to the club, he has been playing with East End Juniors and has some Highland League experience playing for both Keith and Inverurie Loco Works. Enjoy your time at the Bellslea and let’s hope that many medals come your way over the years to come.
We played away at Formartine United over the festive period just before Christmas, it was a tight match with the Broch using a high press which prevented Formartine playing from the back, a cracking strike from JamieBeagrie in the first half was all that separated the sides, it was a welcome three points which keeps us in front of Formartine in the League. Tomorrow, we play Formartine at the Bellslea, fingers crossed that we have another three points on the board when you read this in the New Year.
We will be running a bus to the Deveronvale game on Saturday 7th January which will leave the Elizabethan at 12:30pm, the cost of travel is £8 for adults and £5 for others. We will also be running a bus to the Brechin City game on Saturday 14th January which will leave the Elizabethan at 11:00am, the cost of travel is £20 for adults and £12 for others. We will also be running a bus to the Huntly game on Wednesday 18th January which will leave the Elizabethan at 6:15pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others.

We hope to attract new members to the supporter’s club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year. Non-members are also very welcome to travel to games, but they will have to pay an extra £2. Our bus info page will tell you the cost and times of bus travel, we leave for home right after the final whistle.
As this is the last news post of the year, all at the supporter’s club would like to wish you a very happy and peaceful New Year.

DAYS,
28TH JANUARY
INVERURIE LOCO WORKS, HARLAW PARK
Inverurie Loco Works Football Club are a senior semi-professional football club from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, who currently play in the Scottish Highland Football League (SHFL).
The club was founded in 1903 by workmen from the Great North of Scotland Railway (GNSR) who had their Locomotive, and Carriage and Wagon Workshops in Inverurie, hence from where the football club got its name. On National Railway Company 'Grouping' in 1923, the GNSR became part of the London & North Eastern Railway, one of the UK's big four railway companies at that time, and the football club lived on. The Locomotive Workshops themselves were formally closed in 1970 on the forming of British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Railways Board at that time. Despite the closure, Inverurie Loco Works F.C. continued to play. Having competed in the Aberdeenshire and North East Junior Leagues for many years, they became a senior club in 2001 when their application to join the SHFL was successful.

Referees are a vital part of football and as the Scottish FA seeks to continually grow and develop the Scottish game, there is a constant need to recruit and develop referees.
The minimum age to become a qualified referee in Scotland is 16.
Refereeing can be a highly rewarding challenge, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle as well as significantly contributing to the development of the game. Referees operate at all levels– from grassroots football right through to the Scottish Professional Football League and international matches.
Introductory Referee Course
The Introductory Referee Course is delivered on behalf of the Scottish FA by the 12 Referees’ Associations throughout the country.
Course fee
£35 (includes the first season’s membership fee) £15 for concessions (students and unemployed persons)
The course length is generally between eight and 10 weeks for two hours per night. The courses are held twice a year in the January to March and September to December periods. Other courses may be held outside this schedule depending on local circumstances and demand.
There are two parts to the Introductory Course. The first is classroom-based learning on the Laws of the Game with an exam in the final week. The exam is conducted on computers at the course venue and involves multiple choice questions, report writing and assessing match incidents on video.
The second part involves officiating a match under the guidance of a more experienced referee. Once part two is completed, candidates are able to join the local Referees’ Association and become a Scottish FA registered referee.
Support is given to new referees by their Referees’ Association and a mentor will be arranged to provide guidance in the early stages of their refereeing careers. Direction will also be given on suitable leagues to commence refereeing.
