FROM THE CHAIRMAN FINLAY NOBLE Welcome to issue three of our monthly Magazine. I hope you enjoying these and please remember, if you have any suggestions or comments please let us know. October was a reasonably good month both on and off the pitch. We have a very successful Business Lunch earlier in the month where a great afternoons entertainment was had by all. Many thanks the Matthew West and Mark Cowie for doing all the hard work in getting it arranged and also to Amber Innes and Nicole Shand for the excellent job with the raffles and auction. The speakers, Tam Cowan and Dick Campbell were top class and as always, the event was superbly hosted by the Marcliffe Hotel. Lastly, a huge thanks to Ian Thain for his superb work as MC and auctioneer. On the park, we had a brilliant victory over Stranraer in the Scottish Cup in what was a day to be remembered for all of a Broch persuasion. This is only the fifth time we have beaten Scottish League opposition in the Scottish Cup. East Stirlingshire (1954), Dundee (1959), Clyde (1997) and Montrose (2013) being the other occasions, all at Bellslea. It sets us up with a cracking tie here at Bellslea with Arbroath on 26th November. It is disappointing that the BBC didn’t feel that it was an attractive enough tie to show live on TV but that is up to them and there is no input from the SFA on which game gets shown. Maybe the ex Ayrshire Junior clubs are the flavour of the month at the moment, or more likely the road north appears to be considerably longer than the road south !! The youngster weren’t so fortunate in the Scottish FA Youth Cup tie here against Ayr United, losing out 2-1 on the day to a decent Ayr Utd side. Maybe we showed them too much respect early on but the lads did really well and with a bit of luck could have got more out of the game. Ayr Utd have an exceptionally well run Youth Academy and we wish them well in the rest of the tournament. As I have said on many occasion, if you are free on a Monday evening you should come along to our U18 and U21 games. They are normally decent games and a great opportunity to hopefully see the Broch players of the future. Unfortunately since our last issue, there was an alleged incident involving a supporter and some unsavoury comments I would like to remind everyone who attends our games that abuse of any sort is not acceptable. We know that football is an emotive sport but there are lines we shouldn’t cross and when behaviour enters into the area of personal abuse or vile threats then we won't accept that at Bellslea Park. We all moan and shout at football matches and on many occasions these are done in jest with a hint of humour, or banter as it tends to be known and that is accepted as such. However, not everyone can see the humour and we need to be mindful of that. I like the fact that Bellslea Park can be seen as a hostile place, where the supporters can be like an extra man but by the same token I don’t like it when it boils over into something more serious. Please let’s all be vigilant and remind those around us if we feel it might be getting over the top. Tickets are currently on sale for the Arbroath match so please keep an eye on social media for any updates on where and when they are on sale. Please also be mindful that the people at the club are part time volunteers and it might not be possible to answer emails within ten minutes of being received. All our Supporters Club Members and Season Ticket Holders will be catered for, and I am sure there are plenty tickets to satisfy the needs of all regular attenders to our games. I hope you continue to enjoy the magazine, and as already mentioned, we are fully open to suggestions or improvements. Come awa the Broch.

FROM THE MANAGER MARK COWIE It has been a relatively successful October for my the first team. We have managed to pick up some good wins whilst also coming away with a deserved point from a tricky away game to Banks o Dee. All in all, our form has been the same as the rest of the season where we have described it as “patchy”. In spells of games, we have been very good and controlled but in other spells we have been sloppy and a bit lethargic in our play. It is something we are working hard to resolve as we know as a team that we must be at our best each week to give ourselves the best chance of winning matches. In amongst those league matches was a somewhat important game in the shape of a second-round tie of the Scottish Cup against Stranraer. There is something about the Scottish cup and Fraserburgh as the town comes alive for these games. We were going into game as underdogs, with us being a league below our opponents, but there was a sense of something could happen when the game came along. We always back ourselves in our own patch no matter who the opposition is. We had to defend resolutely, and we did with our back four standing up to the challenge. Joe Barbour also pulled off a couple of top class saves to keep them out which allowed us to be always in the game. We were clinical at the other end where we only had a couple of really good chances but managed to convert them both. We were under a bit of pressure in the later stages, but we held firm and managed to get the win which in turn gives us a lucrative tie at home to Arbroath of the championship. In terms of personnel, unfortunately we have had to lose a couple of players since the start of the season in the form of Jordan Guild and Aidan Combe. Jordan came in over the summer after impressing in a few trials he had. He was thrown into the deep end with games against the likes of Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle etc but I felt he did well. That was never going to be the games he would be judged in, and we knew the league would be more important. Ultimately after taking some time out to contemplate it all, he advised me that he wanted to return to Fraserburgh United. Your time playing football is short so we made sure Jordan could return to his old club quickly without any fuss so he could start enjoying it again and we wish him every success and thank him for his time at the club.

Also moving on is Aidan Gombe who was transferred to Formartine United. Aidan has been at the club for quite a few years and had almost become part of the furniture. Being an Aberdeen based lad, it is even more admirable of him to commit for as long as he did to the club which involved countless hours of travelling to games and training. Aidan had a work-related accident which held him back a bit as he needed time to recover and get his strangely again. He worked really hard to get back and that is testament to him. After a long think he felt that he needed a new challenge and although it was disappointing to let him go, we had to respect his wishes. Again, we weren’t difficult to deal with and made sure the move went through so Aidan could try and get his career back on track at his new employers. We wish Aidan success and hope it all works out for him, however we won’t be giving him any special treatment or favours when we face them in the future. The support the club has received from the fans of late is truly second to none so from the bottom of my heart and from all the players and coaches, I thank each and every one of you for your efforts over the last while and hope you are enjoying watching us play. Take care Mark

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Turriff United v Fraserburgh, The Haughs Wednesday 5th October 2022 An early mistake in the Turriff defence saw Ryan Sargent win the ball back and cross into the penalty area for Logan Watt to nod home on 3 minutes. At the other end Joe Barbour had to react smartly to deny Rory Brown. There was no let up to a frantic start with Ross Aitken crossing and Scott Barbour heading just wide. Aitken then set up Paul Campbell on 8 minutes only for Tim Findlay to produce a fine save to deny the Broch striker. The visitors did double their lead a minute later when Watt regained possession and squared the ball for Barbour to tap into an empty net. Bryan Hay then tried his luck on 19 minutes latching onto a Watt cross that had been cleared but his effort was blocked. Turriff thought they had pulled a goal back in the 23rd minute when Reece McKeown controlled a long ball forward and slotted the ball past Barbour, however the assistant referee flagged for offside. A Barbour corner was met by the head of Kieran Simpson but cleared off the line by James Chalmers. It wasn’t all one-way traffic though, Hay’s attempted clearance fell to Jack McKenzie who fired wide. On 31 minutes Sargent set up Barbour who rolled his defender and fired a shot just wide of Findlay’s far post. The Broch striker had another effort three minutes later after Paul Young won the ball back, but Findlay was able to make a good save. Young then had a go himself after Watt set him up, the midfielder’s effort went fizzing wide of the goal. Half Time: Turriff United 0 Fraserburgh 2 A minute after the break Turriff pulled a goal back when Murray Cormack broke through two tackles and fired past Barbour to notch his first goal for the club. A minute before the hour Watt brought the house down when his acrobatic overhead kick from Hay’s cross flew past a bewildered Findlay into the Turriff net. Sargent then went close with a shot on 60 minutes, before Barbour did enough to deny both Jordan Cooper and McKenzie as the home side searched for a quick response. Aitken came close to his first goal for the Broch firing over from a good position after 76 minutes. With three minutes left Hay picked the ball up 30 yards out and fired a howitzer past Findlay to seal the points for the visitors. Right at the death Young rattled the crossbar from a Sargent lay-off. Full Time: Turriff United 1 Fraserburgh 4 Turriff United: Tim Findlay, Owen Kinsella, Rhys Clark, James Chalmers, Dylan Stuart, Liam Strachan (Keir Smith 69), Jack McKenzie, Jordan Cooper, Aaron Reid (Murray Cormack 24), Rory Brown (Ewan Clark 69), Reece McKeown. Subs not used: Ethan Smith, Liam Cheyne, David Dey. Goalscorer: Murray Cormack (46). Fraserburgh: Joe Barbour, Ross Aitken, William West, Bryan Hay, Kieran Simpson, Paul Young, Logan Watt (Jamie Maclellan 90), Jamie Beagrie, Paul Campbell (Connor Wood 63), Ryan Sargent, Scott Barbour (Zane Laird 81). Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club November News Congratulations to Scott Barbour who played his 300th game for the Broch away at Turriff United, Scott is second in the all-time goals charts with 215 goals, Michael Stephen is first with 237. Congratulations must also go to Kieran Simpson who played his 100th game for the Broch last month against Banks O’ Dee, Kieran has scored 7 goals for the Broch. Kieran has developed into one of the best young centre halves in the Highland League, his display in the second half against Stranraer in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup was superb. Aidan Combe has left the club and signed for Formartine United, Aidan has had injury problems over the past few years and we all hope they clear up and he gets his career going again, Aidan has appeared 179 times for the Broch and he has scored 27 goals for the club, all at the Broch Supporter’s Club wish Aidan all the very best for the future and thank him for his contribution in the Broch’s success over the past few years. Early last month we were away to Banks O’ Dee on a Friday night, a late Bryan Hay header managed to salvage a point in the last minute of normal time. The under 18’s played against Ayr United in the 2nd round of the Scottish Youth Cup, Ayr went 2 goals to nil up in the first half, a goal from Adam Henderson in the second half for the Broch was not enough to win the tie. The 2nd round Scottish Cup tie against Stranraer was another great moment in the Broch’s history, Scott Robertson had a mix up with Luke Scullion at the back for The Blues, Greg Buchan nipped in and poked the ball into the empty net from 6 yards out, Stranraer levelled before half time, before a bit of magic from Connor Wood who took a great first touch, he then turned and fired a right foot shot low into the bottom left-hand corner of the net from 10 yards out, this along with some great saves from Joe Barbour was enough to win the tie and send the Bellslea faithful into dreamland. The under 21’s played Keith in the Aberdeenshire League, they won the game by 2 goals to 1, a brace by Zaine Laird helped to secure all 3 points and keep them at the top of the League. The draw for the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup has taken place and we have been given a home tie against Arbroath who play in the Scottish Championship, Arbroath play their home games at Gayfield Park and they were formed in 1878, at present Arbroath are in 10th place in the League with 10 points from 13 games played. Arbroath hold the record for the biggest victory in the Scottish Cup, they defeated Aberdeen Bon Accord by 36 goals to 0 on the 12th September 1885. We have played them twice in the past in the Scottish Cup, firstly on Saturday 8th January 2000, we drew that game with neither team scoring, the Broch played with 9 men after James Geddes and Kris Hunter were sent off, in the replay in front of a bumper Bellslea crowd, The Red Lichties won the game by 3 goals to 1, Michael Stephen scored the Broch’s only goal of the game. Last Saturday 2 very late goals from Paul Campbell were enough to bag the points as we defeated Rothes in the League. Last Monday the under 18s came from 3 goals down to win at the death by 4 goals to 3 against Deveronvale, Callum Kelly scored a brace, other goals were from Vinnie Ingleby and a last minute header from Ross Taylor to win the match. A reminder that Bryan Hay’s testimonial game has been arranged and will take place against St Johnston on Sunday 4th December with a 2pm kick-off, let’s hope that a bumper crowd turns out for it as he certainly deserves it. Bryan has now played 489 games for the Broch which has put him into 10th place in the Broch all time appearances, he is now 1 ahead of Kevin Norris 488 and 1 behind Brian Sim 490.

We will be running a bus to the Huntly game on Wednesday 2nd November which will leave the Elizabethan at 6:15pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others. IN TOWN TODAY, SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER INVERURIE LOCO WORKS History Rising up from successful years in junior football, in 2001 the Locos applied for membership of the Highland League and were successful. In the 2003–04 season, the Locos came second in the league, they then went a further two seasons in a row in second place. In 2005, they first got their hands on silverware by winning the Scottish Qualifying Cup, then repeated the feat the next year. They also won the Aberdeenshire Shield after being runners up three times before winning the trophy. Then they won the Fosters Cup (League Cup) twice in two years, in 2007–08 and 2008–09. They also won the SFA North Region Challenge Cup in 2008–09. In the 2008–09 Scottish Cup, the club were paired with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell at home. They reached the fourth round of the competition that season. After four postponements, the match was finally played at the fifth time of asking. Despite a capacity crowd watching, the Highland League outfit could not prevent a 3–0 loss to their top-flight opponents. IN DISCUSSION WITH - CONNOR WOOD You seem to have made the transition from playing in the Juniors to the Highland League with relative ease. What do you put your good form since signing for the club down to and do you feel you can get even better? I think the fact that everyone involved with the club, from the players and staff to the fans, have made me feel so welcome has helped a lot. Of course, there’s always room for improvement. I’m still quite young and still learning a lot so I’ve just got to put in the hard work. Since joining from East End you have scored four times in fourteen appearances, netted in the never-ending penalty shootout against Inverurie Loco Works and picked up a winners' medal in the Aberdeenshire Cup. Do you have to pinch yourself about how well things have gone so far? Yeah, it’s been a good start but there’s a lot more to come, I think with having had so much football recently, most weeks playing every 3/4 days helped in a way. Obviously winning the cup was brilliant for everyone. Your performances in the Scottish Cup in particular have been very good with a goal in the victory over Civil Service Strollers and the winner against Stranraer. What is it about the competition that has brought out the best in you? It’s been great to get on the scoresheet but the most important thing is to win the match, you always want to test yourself and this competition is perfect for that. You are fast turning into a bit of a fans favourite at the club and are also sponsored by the Supporters Club. How welcome have they made you feel since your transfer? Everyone has made me feel very welcome and I can’t thank them enough. It’s really helped me settle in. Finally, what are your aspirations for the remainder of the season and beyond? At the moment it’s just to win one game at a time and hopefully by the end of the season have a few more trophies.

FFC IN THE COMMUNITY – OCTOBER CAMP 2022-23

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Clachnacuddin, Bellslea Park Saturday 8th October 2022 A youthful Clach side made the trip south to the Bellslea and nearly found themselves a goal down in 3 minutes when Scott Barbour’s cross just evaded the outstretched leg of Zane Laird. Six minutes later a driving run by Greg Buchan released Connor Wood inside the box who saw his shot save by Daniel Rae. Barbour then curled in a free kick which William West headed wide. The home side took the lead on 19 minutes when Barbour’s cross was deflected into the path of Ross Aitken who knocked the ball home at the back post from close range for his first goal for the club. Four minutes later a Barbour free kick from the left was met by the head of Bryan Hay only for Rae to make a good save down to his right. Clach’s first venture up the field saw Robbie Thompson fire in a 25 yarder which Joe Barbour pushed away, Alisdair Riddle retrieved the ball and crossed for James Anderson who headed straight at Barbour. Barbour then latched onto a mistake by Gary Warren but he could only screw his shot wide. Alasdair Gillies then shot wide after being set up by Lewis Mackenzie on 34 minutes. A minute later Wood drove down the right and crossed for Barbour who headed wide of Rae’s goal. Thompson then tried his luck from a free kick but Barbour pulled off a routine save on 41 minutes. Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Clachnacuddin 0

The home side had obviously been given a rocket at the break as within six minutes the doubled their lead. Greg Buchan managed to find space on the right and cut the ball back for Logan Watt to rifle the ball home from ten yards. Five minutes later Watt had a go from 25 yards which produced a good save from Rae. The third goal duly arrived on 58 minutes when Barbour held off his defender before crossing for Aitken to nod home at the back post. Sean Butcher crossed for Ryan Sargent who saw his first time effort deflected wide. It was 4-0 on 76 minutes when substitute Butcher got on the end of West’s square ball to tap the ball home. Two minutes later Warren was penalised for handball inside the penalty area. Aitken surprisingly stepped up but his tame effort was easily saved by Rae to deny the full-back his hat-trick. The fifth goal was only delayed by a minute when Paul Campbell raced onto a short back-pass by Gillies and rounded Rae to slot the ball into an empty net. Three minutes from the end Paul Young fired in a shot which whistled wide. Full Time: Fraserburgh 5 Clachnacuddin 0 Fraserburgh: Joe Barbour, Ross Aitken, William West, Bryan Hay, Paul Young, Logan Watt, Jamie Beagrie, Connor Wood (Paul Campbell 71), Greg Buchan, Scott Barbour (Sean Butcher 71), Zane Laird (Ryan Sargent 71). IN TOWN TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY 16TH NOVEMBER, ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY The University Club was formed in 1872 and became members of the SFA in 1904. Aberdeen University has made three appearances in the Scottish Cup competition. In 1907, Aberdeen University lost 5–1 to Raith Rovers at Kirkcaldy whilst in 1925 the Club travelled to Dundee United only to go down 5–1 in the first Round. The only home tie played by the Uni was in 1913 when the visitors were Peebles Rovers. In front of 2000 spectators, Aberdeen University lost 3–0. In season 1963–64, the University clinched the prestigious local amateur knockout competition, the Bowie Cup, for the very first time. The following season saw the University enter the Scottish Amateur Cup for the very first time only to suffer defeat in the first Round at the hands of Doune Castle. Their defence of the Bowie Cup came to an end against Cove Rangers. At this time a great rivalry existed between the University and, at that time, fellow amateurs Cove Rangers. The 1960s were a prolific time for the University led by coach Tudar Hale who later left to take up an appointment in England. In 1969 Dr Eric Farr took over as Coach and led the University to further success at SUSF and Amateur level. Key players of the era were captain John McGrory, vice-captain Dave McWilliam, Alex Ingram, Phil Williams, Roy Pilgrim, Norrie Stuart and Robin Mitchell, all of whom were University internationalists. In 1969, the club was also awarded the Allender Memorial Trophy as the most outstanding Club within the Athletic Association. Aberdeen came close to regaining the Queen's Park Shield in the early-1980s but the real highlight of these times was the University's victory over Deveronvale in an Aberdeenshire Cup replay which set up a clash with a strong Aberdeen side. This was the year Aberdeen went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup and almost 1000 turned out at Kings to see the University suffer a narrow 2–0 defeat. The Aberdeen team included Bryan Gunn in goal, Willie Falconer and Andy Watson. The previous year Aberdeen had again lost out narrowly to Peterhead who had a certain Joe Harper leading the line. There was some success at Universities level with the Uni second team claiming the Paterson Trophy for the first time in 1982-83. In 1987–88, an Aberdeen side coached by former players, Craig Graham and Mark Stewart, finally reclaimed the Queen's Park Shield as SUSF Champions. Four Aberdeen players – Mark Thomson, Dave Lewis, Ali Bryce and Gavin Dennis went on to represent Scottish Universities with Bryce and Dennis picking up caps for the British Uni's team as well. The following season Steve Laing was picked as a member of the SUSF team. Morrison Motors Turriff Aberdeenshire Shield 1st Round, Fraserburgh v Banks O’ Dee, Bellslea Park Tuesday 11th October 2022 Banks O’ Dee took the lead after 9 minutes when Neil Gauld got on the end of a flick and forced the ball home. The Broch responded on 22 minutes after Paul Campbell and Ross Aitken combined on the right wing with the latter crossing for the home striker to sweep the ball home from 10 yards. Gauld tried his luck again five minutes later but was thwarted by Joe Barbour in the Fraserburgh goal. At the other end Butcher and Paul Young worked well together to create a chance for Campbell who saw his shot blocked. Mark Gilmour then set up Gauld on 35 minutes, however the Dee striker screwed his shot wide. Two minutes later Campbell raced away from Jason Selbie and as the young full back tried to recover he could only clip the Broch striker from behind. Campbell got up and calmly stroked home the resultant spot-kick. Two minutes before the break it was the visitors’ chance to level from the spot after referee Scott Donohoe adjudged Ryan Sargent had impeded Lachie Macleod. Gauld stepped up and dispatched the penalty past Barbour. Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Banks O’ Dee 2 Five minutes into the second half a driving run by Greg Buchan almost ended with the Broch retaking the lead but Selbie redeemed himself by clearing the ball away from goal. Just after the hour Gauld completed his hat-trick when he stabbed the ball home from close range to put Dee ahead. The Broch brought on reinforcements in the shape of Connor Wood and Scott Barbour and it was the latter who rifled a Campbell lay-off towards goal only to see his effort deflected wide. Barbour would not be denied long however as a Buchan free kick on 80 minutes was headed down by Kieran Simpson and the Broch’s top scorer rammed the ball home from close range. Barbour almost turned provider two minutes later by Simpson’s header was deflected wide. The home side were pushing for the winner and Sargent’s cross was met by an acrobatic attempt by Barbour which flew wide. Wood latched onto a Barbour lay-off with four minutes remaining but his shot was blocked away for a corner. Full Time: Fraserburgh 3 Banks O’ Dee 3 Both sides traded their first two penalties with Jack Henderson and Lachie Macleod scoring for Dee and Kieran Simpson and Paul Campbell replying for the home side. Hamish Macleod saw his penalty stopped by Joe Barbour before Scott Barbour netted at the second time of asking after Ross Salmon was adjudged to have stepped off his line too early when saving the Broch striker’s first penalty. Matthew Wallace and Marc Young netted for Dee and with Ryan Sargent having scored for the Broch it was left to Bryan Hay to thunder the winning penalty high into the net to send Fraserburgh through to a home quarter final against Aberdeen University. Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Banks O’ Dee v Fraserburgh, Spain Park Friday 14th October 2022 Dee and Broch met for the second time in three days this time in the Highland League with both sides looking for three points to climb the table. Neil Gauld flicked the ball onto Lachie Macleod but the striker fired his shot over the crossbar. On 9 minutes Ryan Sargent cross was only cleared as far as Greg Buchan who saw his first time shot fly wide. A minute later Dee took the lead when Lewis Crosbie latched onto the ball after a mistake in the visitor’s defence and dispatched the ball past Joe Barbour into the net. The Broch almost levelled on 12 minutes when Sargent found Scott Barbour with a flick and the forward brought out a great save from Andy Shearer who tipped the ball round the post. Kane Winton was then booked for simulation before he found space midway through the half before firing well over. On 32 minutes Robert Armstrong forced Barbour to punch away a free kick. At the other end Sargent passed up a great opportunity after Connor Wood had slipped him through, sliding the ball wide of Shearer’s right hand post.

Buchan then set up Barbour in the 37th minute but once again Shearer did well to tip the shot over. Dee almost snatched a second when Macleod’s cross fell to Gauld who fired wide. Just before the break Neale Allan was yellow carded for almost cutting Sean Butcher in half. Half Time: Banks O’ Dee 1 Fraserburgh 0 A minute after the break Wood burst onto a William West pass only to see his net-bound shot deflected wide. Barbour then crossed for Sargent but once again his effort from a header drifted wide of target. Dee almost made it 2-0 on 51 minutes when Winton headed towards goal but Paul Young was on hand to clear off the line. It was end to end fare with Young setting up Barbour for the visitors, however once again the Dee defence stood firm blocking the Broch striker’s effort. Winton then passed to Mark Gilmour who could only watch as his shot crept wide. Butcher then found his way into the referee’s notebook, getting a yellow card for a foul on Winton. The Broch goal had a huge let off on 81 minutes when a driving run by Winton ended with Craig Macaskill seeing his shot blocked before Lachie Macleod lashed the rebound over. Hamish Macleod then saw another shot tipped over by Barbour as Dee tried to seal the points. The Broch levelled on 87 minutes when Barbour’s corner was powered into the net by Bryan Hay. CLUB NEWS Saturday 15 October 2022 Congratulations to Kieran Simpson on his 100th appearance for the club last night in the 1-1 draw at Banks O Dee. Kieran made his debut on 10th February 2018 in a Leaue Cup tie at home to Fort William. He also scored that day in the 9-0 win. He has scored a total of seven goals in his 100 appearances. Monday 24 October 2022 Former Scotland and Hearts defender Christophe Berra returned to Hampden Park this afternoon as he made the draw for the Third Round of the 2022/23 Scottish Cup. Berra, who announced his retirement from football in the summer, joined host Gordon Duncan to make the draw for Round Three which will be contested over the weekend of Saturday, 26 November. With the Third Round seeing the introduction of sides from the Championship and League One, Berra’s former side Raith Rovers enter the competition and they will entertain Auchinleck Talbot, who reached the Fourth Round in last year’s Scottish Cup. Championship table-toppers Inverness Caledonian Thistle will host Stirling Albion, and Fraserburgh also have a home tie as they are rewarded for their fine win over Stranraer with a match against Dick Campbell’s Arbroath. Falkirk face a trip up north to face Wick Academy, while Drumchapel United – playing in the Scottish Cup for the first time – play host to FC Edinburgh. The attacking midfielder/winger who joined the Broch from Keith’s youth team made 179 appearances scoring 27 times, including the club’s 7000th competitive goal in the match at home to Rothes in December 2015. Aidan made an immense contribution during his time at Bellslea being part of the Highland League winning squad last season and being involved in 5 Aberdeenshire Cup winning finals and two Aberdeenshire Shield winning teams. He was a popular figure in the dressing room and will be hugely missed around the club, everyone at the club would like to wish him all the best for the future. Thursday 4th November 2022 Congratulations to Logan Watt who made his 50th appearance for the club in the 4-1 victory against Huntly on Wednesday night. The former Aberdeen Youth player who made his debut for the club against Wick Academy in July 2019 has featured regularly this season and has notched 8 goals in total including two in the League win at Turriff in October, one of which was a superb acrobatic effort. Logan who is only 19 has a great future ahead of him and hopefully many more appearances/goals in a black and white shirt. Also belated congratulations to Callum Kelly who made his first team debut for the Broch in the recent Scottish Cup win over Stranraer, as a late substitute. Callum, who only turned 17 last month, has joined up with the first team squad after impressing in the U18s and U21s this season. The former Montrose Youth player has been banging in the goals with increasingly regularity and notched another brace in the 4-3 comeback win over Deveronvale U18s last Monday night. I’m sure it won’t be long before he gets his first goal at senior level.

GPH Builders Merchants Aberdeenshire & District League, Fraserburgh v Hermes, Bellslea Park Thursday 13th October 2022 The young Broch started brightly and Zane Laird gave the home side an early lead netting after 5 minutes. Callum Kelly doubled the lead on 18 minutes thundering home a shot via the crossbar. Eight minutes later Zane Laird latched onto a Flynn McKay through ball to make the score 3-0. The Broch striker, who has been featuring for the first team this season completed his hat-trick on 33 minutes firing home after a corner kick broke kindly for him. Just on the half time whistle Hermes pulled one back when Brunon Paszkiewicz curled a free-kick past Sam Inglis in the home goal. Half Time: Fraserburgh 4 Hermes 1 Just as they did in the first half the home side started with a bang, substitute Vinnie Ingleby racing onto a long through ball to score past keeper Callum Duncan. It was 6-1 on 56 minutes when Adam Henderson saw his header from a corner deflect in off a Hermes defender. The Broch extended their lead on the hour when McKay got on the end of a sweeping move to net from close range. The home side were rampant now and another half-time substitute Jake Garden volleyed home a corner kick which had been cleared into his path. Hermes almost pulled another goal back on 80 minutes when Gafar Abari released Jack Booth but Daniel Cummings who had earlier replaced Inglis did really well to save with his feet. IN DISCUSSION WITH - JOE BARBOUR You are having something of an Indian summer with the club, having taken over as the regular number one on the teamsheet. What do you put the change in your fortunes down to over the past year or so? I would say going on loan at the start of last season was a major factor as this gave me confidence with playing games and then when the opportunity came up to play near the end of the season I think my performances merited my place in the team. You first signed for the club way back in 2009, making your debut against Cove Rangers at Allan Park in 2011. What do you remember from that night (we lost 1-3)? Erm, I don’t remember much to be fair but what I do recall was the fact it was at Allan Park and as most will know it was a tight park and they just kept lumping the ball in the box trying to hit their striker so was a difficult game but a great experience. Several loan spells followed as well as some time away from the club, but you returned and have added a Highland League title to your medal haul which also includes 3 Aberdeenshire Cup winners medals and an Aberdeenshire Shield winners medal. What do these successes mean to you especially being a local lad? I think if you asked the fans if they got the opportunity to play for the Broch they would jump at it so for me being a young lad and going to the games from an early age with my dad then you can guess how much the medals mean to me. This season you have been involved in three penalty shootouts, how nerve-wracking are they to take part in and how do you approach facing different penalty kick takers? I am actually quite relaxed when it comes to penalties as I back my ability, but I will say is against Locos in the cup when I had to take a kick that was completely different! Especially considering Andy got a hand to it and hit the post so felt like it took an age to hit the net, so respect to the lads who take them.

Finally, what does the future hold for Joe Barbour at the Broch? I hope to continue playing games and adding more medals to the collection.

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Rothes, Bellslea Park Saturday 29th October 2022 The Broch had an early chance when Logan Watt and Paul Campbell combined to set up Greg Buchan in the first minute, who shot narrowly wide. Two minutes later Buchan closed down Rothes keeper Sean McCarthy with the ball rebounding off the Broch midfielder just wide of goal. Rothes almost took a shock lead when Jack Maley’s pass behind the home defence found Aidan Wilson who saw his shot cannon off the post. On 9 minutes William West found Campbell on the edge of the box, he laid the ball off to Sean Butcher with McCarthy making a good save from the striker’s effort. Six minutes later Alan Pollock tried his luck from the right side of the penalty area which Joe Barbour saved comfortably. Campbell did well to win the ball back on 17 minutes and fed Butcher but McCarthy closed down the angle and blocked the shot with his legs. Ten minutes after that chance Watt played the ball to Butcher who crossed to the back post where Ross Aitken headed it towards goal with McCarthy once again in the right place to save. Just before the break Butcher picked up a yellow card for a foul. Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Rothes 0 Two minutes into the second half Watt tried an acrobatic effort from Buchan’s cross which flew over the crossbar. On 62 minutes the pair combined again this time Watt heading over from Buchan’s cross to the back post. Paul Young was then booked for dissent before the Broch midfielder saw a shot well saved by McCarthy after Watt had set him up. Substitute Scott Barbour tried to break the deadlock on 72 minutes firing in a shot which went just wide of goal. Three minutes later Barbour and Campbell combined to set up Watt who curled an effort just wide. At the other end Matheus Machado went on a driving run which ended with his shot going just wide of the far post. Young saw a thunderbolt from 25 yards on 78 minutes cannon off the crossbar and Campbell’s effort from the rebound was blocked. Tempers were getting frayed and Buchan and Wilson were yellow carded for pushing on 80 minutes before Pollock was booked for a shocking challenge on Campbell as the Broch striker raced away from him. Aitken was booked for his reaction to the tackle. Right on time Zane Laird was upended by Bruce Milne inside the box and Campbell swept home the resultant spot kick. Three minutes into injury time Campbell rifled home a second after Laird had set him up. The Broch striker almost netted a third two minutes later but his shot was blocked. Full Time: Fraserburgh 2 Rothes 0

Scottish FA Youth Cup 2nd Round, Fraserburgh v Ayr United, Bellslea Park Wednesday 19th October 2022 The youngsters from Ayr made the perfect start when Lyall Holding forced the ball home from a fifth minute corner. Ten minutes later a Callum Kelly cross found its way to Stuart Laird who fired in a shot just off target. Disaster struck the home side on 24 minutes when Adam Henderson fouled Jason Campbell inside the penalty area and the Ayr striker dusted himself off to net from the spot kick. Brook Dreghorn tried his luck from outside the box on 40 minutes but Sam Inglis did well to save. Two minutes later John West and Lewis Allan had efforts blocked for the visitors. Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Ayr United 2 Ayr kept pressing and had the first chance of the second half when CJ Johnston saw his shot fly just off target. On 51 minutes Inglis did well to tip away a drive by Dreghorn. A series of bookings and substitutions for both sides saw a scrappy spell in the match before Dreghorn once again saw a shot fly just over the crossbar on 71 minutes.

The Broch were starting to exert some pressure and Kelly brought out a good save from Ollie Ecrepont two minutes later. On 75 minutes the home side were back in the match when Henderson bulleted home a header from close range. With three minutes remaining Ricky Milne found Flynn McKay who saw his shot well saved by Ecrepont. A minute later Kelly raced onto a through ball and shot wide under a challenge by Lyall Holding who received a second yellow card for unsporting behaviour, reducing the visitors to ten men. After McKay and Jake Garden were booked in quick succession, Logan Watt saw a free kick deflected wide. Ethan Sutherland replaced the injured Ricky Milne on 41 minutes and almost scored immediately nodding over Zane Laird’s cross. A minute later the Broch did take the lead when Laird raced onto a short backpass to round Cook and score. Half Time: Keith 0 Fraserburgh 1 Laird went close again on 48 minutes, this time Cook did well to save. Watt and Sutherland were both booked as the game ebbed and flowed. Become a Referee Referees are a vital part of football and as the Scottish FA seeks to continually grow and develop the Scottish game, there is a constant need to recruit and develop referees. The minimum age to become a qualified referee in Scotland is 16. Refereeing can be a highly rewarding challenge, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle as well as significantly contributing to the development of the game. Referees operate at all levels– from grassroots football right through to the Scottish Professional Football League and international matches.

Introductory Referee Course The Introductory Referee Course is delivered on behalf of the Scottish FA by the 12 Referees’ Associations throughout the country. Course fee £35 (includes the first season’s membership fee) £15 for concessions (students and unemployed persons) The course length is generally between eight and 10 weeks for two hours per night. The courses are held twice a year in the January to March and September to December periods. Other courses may be held outside this schedule depending on local circumstances and demand. There are two parts to the Introductory Course. The first is classroom-based learning on the Laws of the Game with an exam in the final week. The exam is conducted on computers at the course venue and involves multiple choice questions, report writing and assessing match incidents on video. The second part involves officiating a match under the guidance of a more experienced referee. Once part two is completed, candidates are able to join the local Referees’ Association and become a Scottish FA registered referee. Support is given to new referees by their Referees’ Association and a mentor will be arranged to provide guidance in the early stages of their refereeing careers. Direction will also be given on suitable leagues to commence refereeing.
