FROM THE CHAIRMAN

FINLAY NOBLE

Welcome to issue two of our monthly Magazine. I hope you all enjoyed the first issue and as mentioned previously, if you have any suggestions or comments please let us know.

September was a month of mixed fortunes, which started off not so good but ended magnificently.

I felt we were extremely unlucky to lose at home to Inverurie Loco Works where two goals in the final three minutes overturned our 1 0 lead. Having played for 75 minutes with ten men it looked like we were going to hold on for a deserved three points but it wasn’t to be. Unfortunately that happens in football and I have seen us do similar things in the past to other teams so it really is a case of swings and roundabouts.

We did however have a great result in the Scottish Cup with a 2 1 away win at Civil Service Strollers which has earned us a home tie later this month against Stranraer. That will be a difficult game but we are at home and can go into the game with confidence. For clubs like ours, and Stranraer to be fair, the Scottish Cup is all about getting as far as possible and making memories for players and fans alike. There is a financial incentive also and with the right luck and a favourable draw there are good times to be had.

It isn’t only the 1st Team who have Scottish Cup ties and our U18’s had a good victory, also 2-1, away to Turriff United. The reward is a home tie with Ayr United on Wednesday 19th October (Kick Off 4pm). That will definitely be a huge challenge for the youngsters but also a good experience. I know from my time on the SFA Club Licensing Committee how much Ayr United put into their Youth Academy. It is genuinely up there with the best of Scottish Football and it is taken very seriously by those involved at Ayr. The further we get in the SFA Youth Cup, the more expensive it is for the club but I don’t mind that. We have players in our first team squad who have gained great experience from games against senior full time clubs. That is more important at this level than any money. The success of the first team is based on getting players through from the Youth Team and it is fair to say that we have done okay on that front over the years.

The month was rounded off in style at Turriff when we defeated Formartine United in the final of the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup. It went to penalties, which are always nerve wracking, but we could and should have won the game in normal time. Two excellent saves by Ewen Macdonald kept the game level and took it to penalties. It was our own goalkeeper who was the hero of the hour though, managing to keep out three penalties in the shootout to get us over the line and help bring the famous old trophy back to Bellslea Park. I remember Joe as a kid coming along to the games so it is always good to see guys like him have success.

On a personal note, being able to hand out winners medals to our players as President of the Association is up there with one of the proudest moments of my life. I am, in all intents and purposes, a Broch fan, so to able to do that was brilliant. The Aberdeenshire Cup is a competition that I have always had an affection with and to have it in our boardroom is always good.

We have a lot going on this month both on and off the park so I hope to see as many of you as possible over the next four weeks

I hope you enjoy the magazine, and as already mentioned, we are fully open to suggestions or improvements. Come awa the Broch.

FROM THE MANAGER

I have mixed feelings over the last few weeks to be honest. We have had some bad results, good results and some great results. I will still say that there is more in us to come out. We have another level to hit which is a scary thought but also worrying at the same time as we need to find that mix sooner rather than later. We started the month of September with a disappointing 2 1 home loss to Inverurie Loco Works. Over the 90 minutes I thought we were the better team and that’s having played 75 minutes with a man less. Bryan Hay was unlucky in that it was pure instinct that made him stop the ball on the line with his hand. That said the boys rallied and played really well getting ourselves in to a winning position with five minutes to play. We lost two poor goals before the end which meant we lost the game 2-1. We put a lot of effort into a midweek game before this one when Inverurie had the night off which didn’t really help us however we should be looking to see the game out for the last five minutes rather than losing it.

We then travelled to Edinburgh the week after to play the first round of the beloved Scottish Cup. We were drawn away to Civil Service Strollers form the Lowland League. We did our homework as I am sure they did and prepared as well as we could have. We started the game really well with a couple of early goals to put us well in control. We really should have scored one or two more but only went in 2-0 up at half-time. The second half they came more into it without really creating a lot of chances. They had a player in midfield who I think was at Man City as a kid who really showed us how to be a midfield player. He dictated the second half and made them play although it was all mainly in front of us. They scored one, however the boys managed to see this one over the line and get us in to the hat for the second-round draw.

We then had a huge game in the form of Brora who I believe to be one of the best teams in the league. They are a club full of talented players who can be game changers at any time. Again, I don’t think we hit the heights that I know we are capable of but we got ourselves in to a commanding position at half time with the score 2 0 us thanks to two very good finishes from Connor Wood and Fig. Then we had a bad 10 minutes at the start of the second half which changed the game. They scored early to bring it back to 2-1 and then we had another player sent off for the second consecutive home game. Brora are an excellent side and probably the worst side in the league to play against with a man less as their movement and rotation is second to none. The got a deserved equaliser and we rode our luck a few times which helped us grind out a draw. Probably a result neither of us wanted however given the circumstances of how we played with 10 men for a while I think we have to look at it as a point game.

The final match in September came in the form of a cup final in the Aberdeenshire Cup. In it we played Formartine United whom we had played more than most in recent times in this competition. I looked at it as a chance to ignite our season. We started the game really well and forced a couple of early corners which didn’t come to anything. Then we allowed Formartine United into the game a bit. The half was a bit scrappy with neither side in my opinion taking full control. We lost a goal just before half time which was probably a bit unjust but we knew we had time to turn it around. The second half was more like us. We penned Formartine in their half for large spells. We were into second balls a lot quicker than them and appeared to be fitter than them. Saying that we only managed to create one or two good chances which we failed to convert despite having most of the ball. Formartine were defending well. We score pretty early in the half to pull it level but we couldn’t quite get that winner and so it went to pens.

Penalties are a lottery and depend on the coolness of the players and the bravery of the goalkeepers. Joe had one of those shootouts where he managed to guess a few right and save two with a third hitting the post. We managed to win the game and get the first trophy of the season for us back to Bellslea which meant just as much to me as the first one did. I must mention the supporters as there seemed to be a great Broch following up to the match to support the boys. It really does help when we hear the support we get from the crowd and can help spur us on when we need it.

We now need to kick on. The cup will sit nicely in the boardroom but we have to move on from it and start climbing the league table. There are no easy games in this league and there will be shock results out there. We have to focus on our game and get back to our way of playing that will hopefully give us more opportunities to win football matches.

Take care Mark

Breedon

Highland Football League,

Highland League Champions Fraserburgh kept up their good goals record in recent games as they scored four times without reply at Nairn County. Boss Mark Cowie was delighted to see his side produce a strong display despite the absence of some key players.

He said "The team I started was strong and when we made the changes it didn't weaken us as we have a good pool which we have recently added to with Bryan Hay, Sean Butcher, Lewis Davidson and Ryan Cowie not playing on the day."

"They will become available for Wednesday night's Aberdeenshire Cup semi-final at Turriff, however. I'm delighted because history tells me this is a nightmare of a ground to come to and win because when Nairn click they are a good side. Teams will discover this as the season wears on."

The deadlock was broken after 34 minutes when Scott Barbour converted from the spot after Cameron Lisle upended Willie West in the box.

Half Time: Nairn County 0 Fraserburgh 1

Fraserburgh added to their advantage after 63 minutes as Kieran Simpson rose in isolation to head home a Barbour corner kick for the second..

A poor goalkeeping clearance from Dylan Maclean saw Logan Watt fire into an empty net from 20 yards as the Broch further increased advantage six minutes later.

Paul Campbell completed the scoring with six minutes left as Aidan Combe was upended in the box, with the Broch striker firing home from the spot.

Nairn boss Ronnie Sharp was disappointed at conceding two penalties to the Broch. He said "You can't give away one penalty never mind two in one game and expect to win."

"We also gave away another bad goal from a corner which we just stood and watched when we needed to attack it. It's mistake after mistake this season and we a few new faces to improve our squad and hopefully get a win to improve the confidence. The bottom line is we have to do better."

Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club October News

We must start by giving a belated supporter’s club welcome to Connor Wood, Connor played for Aberdeen East End in the North Junior League, he has already netted three times for the Broch and has shown that he can set up others to score goals as well, all at the supporter’s club hope that Connor has a long and successful career in the Black and White. Bryan Hay’s testimonial dinner dance was held at the Douglas hotel in Aberdeen on Saturday 10th September, a cracking evening was enjoyed by all that attended, his testimonial game has been arranged and will take place against St Johnstone on Sunday 4th December with a 2pm kick off, let’s hope that a bumper crowd turns out for it as he certainly deserves it.

Congratulations to the Broch under 18 team who have won through to the 2nd round of the Scottish Youth Cup, they secured a win away from home at Turriff United by 2 goals to 1, Aaron Miller and Callum Kelly scored the goals, let’s hope they get a good draw in the next round. In the under 18 league the lads lost away from home to Turriff by 2 goals to 1, Aaron Miller scored early on and looked to have secured the 3 points, 2 very late goals for Turriff left the Broch with nothing to show from a good team performance. In the under 21 league, we drew away at Huntly by 4 goals to 4, we were 4 goals to 2 down but managed to come back and secure a draw, Zaine Laird netted twice while Ricky Milne and Vinnie Ingleby scored a goal each.

We were defeated by Inverurie Locos by 2 goals to 1 in the League, we gave ourselves a mountain to climb when Bryan Hay was sent off after only 13 minutes after he saved the ball with his hand on the goal line, a bit of Connor Wood magic set up Scott Barbour for a tap in but 2 late goals lost the game. Well done to the lads after we defeated Civil Service Strollers by 2 goals to 1 in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup, a large vocal travelling support were down at Christie Gillies Park in Edinburgh and had a great day out, the hospitality was first class, goals from Connor Wood and Sean Butcher in the first half won the game for us.

We have been drawn at home to Stranraer in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday 22nd October, they play their home games at Stair Park in Stranraer, they are in the Scottish League Division 2 and at present they are in 4th place with 12 points from 9 games played. We have played them once in the past which was on Saturday 10th January 1998, we lost the game by 2 goals to 1, Kris Hunter scored our only goal of the game.

We played Brora at home, after leading by 2 goals to nil at halftime it was sad to land up drawing the game 2 all, Sean Butcher received a red card for a second booking in the 62nd minute of the game, the lads did well to get a point from a very good Brora team. The under 21’s were at home to Deveronvale on Monday 26th September in the Aberdeenshire League, the lads managed to secure all 3 points with a 4 goals to 1 victory, Callum Kelly scored the first goal and then Zaine Laird netted a hattrick.

Formartine United were our opponents in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final last Friday at Turriff, after going behind we managed to equalise early in the second half, we held our nerve in the penalty shootout with Joe Barbour showing some brilliant keeping to help us to a 3 goal to 2 victory. The Aberdeenshire Cup is a beautiful trophy and will look great sitting beside the Highland League trophy in the board room.

We will be running a bus to the Banks O’ Dee game on Friday 14th October which will leave the Elizabethan at 6:30pm, the cost of travel is £10 for adults and £5 for others. Please note that all seats on all buses must be booked by contacting Kenny McDonald at the supporter’s club, details can be found on our web pages.

We hope to attract new members to the supporter’s club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year. Non members are also very welcome to travel to games but they will have to pay an extra £2. Our bus info page will tell you the cost and times of bus travel, we leave for home right after the final whistle.

Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final, Turriff United v Fraserburgh, The Haughs Wednesday 31st August 2022

Neither side were able to get into an early rhythm as early chances were in short supply at the Haughs. The home side did take the lead however on 12 minutes when Aaron Reid fired in a shot which was deflected past Joe Barbour and into the net despite the best efforts of Ross Aitken to clear it.

Seven minutes later Scott Barbour's corner to the back post was headed over by Bryan Hay as the Broch looked to get back on level terms. On 35 minutes Ryan Cowie was left writhing in pain after clashing with an advertising board and was replaced by William West. The unfortunate Broch left back was stretchered off with a badly dislocated knee which will keep him out for several weeks.

Jamie Beagrie then went close with a shot on 40 minutes which Tim Findlay was relieved to see go wide of his right-hand post. The Broch won a penalty when Ethan Smith handballed inside his own area and Paul Campbell coolly slotted home the resultant spot kick.

Just before the half time break West passed the ball forward to Barbour who saw his shot blocked away by Liam Cheyne to keep the score level at the break.

Half Time: Turriff United 1 Fraserburgh 1

Barbour's corners were causing concern for the home side and West headed wide on 58 minutes. Both side made substitutions on the hour with Owen Kinsella replacing Rhys Clark for the home side and Connor Wood doing likewise for Aidan Combe for the Broch.

The Broch winger almost made an immediate impact when his dipping cross landed on the top of the crossbar. On 69 minutes Ross Aitken crossed and Paul Young ran onto the ball before sliding it just over the line.

The visitors went in search of a third when Barbour's corner was met by the head of Hay but he saw his bullet effort go just over Findlay's crossbar. Both sides made further changes in the final twenty minutes with Jordan Guild replacing Sean Butcher and Jordan Cooper & Kyle Gordon coming on for Ethan Smith & Liam Strachan as Turriff made a double switch.

With the game going into stoppage time Barbour had a great chance to seal a third for the Broch but Findlay was on hand to thwart the Fraserburgh striker.

Currently Banks o' Dee have an affiliation with local juvenile club Albion BC who will use Spain Park as a training facility and for home matches.

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Inverurie Loco Works, Bellslea Park

Saturday 3rd September 2022

Inverurie Loco Works came from behind to defeat 10 man Fraserburgh 2 1 at Bellslea Park. The Broch were forced to play for 75 minutes with 10 men after central defender Bryan Hay was sent off for handball but after taking the lead the home side ran out of steam and conceded two late goals.

It is a second league defeat of the season for champions Fraserburgh who sit six points behind Brechin City after seven games. Locos' manager Richard Hastings said "We certainly made hard work of it but it is a really good win for us as three points here are hard to come by."

"When Fraserburgh went down to 10 men we created a number of chances but we didn't take them. The game was in the balance and then we were disappointed to find ourselves 1 0 down. But we didn't give up and it was an incredible moment when that winning goal went in, despite the bad one that Logan Johnstone took. He looks in quite bad shape but it just goes to show the commitment from both him and Mark Souter, to try to win the ball they were both going for.

On the quarter hour mark the Broch were reduced to 10 men when Hay instinctively threw his hand up on the goal-line to stop a Fergus Alberts close range effort crossing the line. Robert Ward took the resulting spot kick but it was too close to home goalkeeper Joe Barbour who managed to get a strong hand to the ball to keep it out.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 0 Inverurie Loco Works 0

In the 57th minute Fraserburgh opened the scoring when Connor Wood broke down the right and squared the ball for Scott Barbour to side foot home from six yards. Locos pressed for an equaliser and with five minutes to go it came with centre half Mark Souter nodding the ball over the line at the back post.

In the second minute of stoppage time Locos grabbed the winner with Alberts' effort hitting the underside of the bar and when Fraserburgh failed to clear Jay Halliday fired the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

Deep into stoppage time Locos' Johnstone went down with blood streaming from a cut to his nose after an accidental collision with team mate Souter. Broch boss Mark Cowie said "I'm not disappointed at all. I'm more proud of the guys as I think we were the better team and I don't think we deserved to lose."

"Inverurie were a threat with their long throws but we coped with it really well until the last five minutes. We played a cup semi-final on Wednesday night and 75 minutes today with 10 men so by the final whistle our legs had gone."

Scottish Cup First Round,

Service Strollers v Fraserburgh, Christie Gillies Park,

Saturday 17th September 2022

The Broch travelled to the capital for their Scottish Cup 1st round tie against Civil Service Strollers and made the perfect start when Connor Wood latched onto Greg Buchan's through ball before sliding it past the home keeper and into the net. They thought they had a scond 8 minutes later when Scott Barbour used his strength to hold off his marker and beat the keeper before rolling the ball towards goal only for Matthew Shaw to clear the ball off the line.

On 16 minutes William West was alert to clear the ball after a good move by Strollers. The Broch doubled their lead on 28 minutes when Buchan's cross into te box was flicked on by Paul Campbell and Sean Butcher was on hand to force the ball home from close range. Ten minutes later Ross Aitken's cross was deflected over before Butcher could finish.

Matthew Cunningham the beat Bryan Hay on the left and drove into the box but Joe Barbour was on hand to save. Just before the break Innes Lawson tried his luck from outside the box but shot well over.

Half Time: Civil Service Strollers 0 Fraserburgh 2

The second half started scappily with Shaw and Mark Laird being booked for Stollers before Butcher found Wood with a great pass who cut inside and curled an effort just wide. Arnault Kasa then went into the book as the home sides frustrations grew.

The Broch made a double change midway through the second half with Ryan Sargent and Logan Watt replacing Sean Butcher and Scott Barbour. Civil Service came close on 68 minutes when Louis Kennedy crossed to the back post and Barbour made a good save from Faye's header, Robert Cole could only fire the rebound well over.

CSS made a double change themselves on 70 minutes and it was one of them, Lewis Duffy who got on the end of Laird's free-kick with his first touch of the ball to nod the ball home at the back post. Ross Clarke became the fourth home player to receive a yellow card before both side made further changes in an effort to freshen things up.

West was booked for handball and Zane Laird replaced Wood as the Broch looked to see out the game which they did comfortably passing up a couple of one on ones towards the end of the game. The victory sets up a home tie with SPFL Two side Stranraer in round 2.

OCTOBER STRANRAER

Stranraer FC Origins

There are reports of games played in Stranraer way back in 1865, mainly on a Wednesday possibly because it was a half day in the town until the 1970s but in 1870 an amalgamation of the town’s clubs formed Stranraer Football Club, making us the country’s third oldest league club. Travel back then was not an easy undertaking, so naturally fixtures were few and far between, and took place for the most part in Wigtownshire, the Stewartry or occasionally Ayrshire.

Finding a home

The early days saw an almost nomadic search for a home, but it would seem that the east end of the town was always the preferred option. Matches were played at Rephad, the bowling green, Sandmill area, Ladies’ Walk, the recreation ground and the trotting track the latter giving the club its first nickname, ‘The Trotters’. Indeed, the club’s finances at times in the early years resembled that of the famous family of the same name from Peckham, South London. A new home was found in 1907 Stair Park and bar a short stay in 1931/32 at the Transit Camp while the ground was re modelled and grandstand erected, the Blues have played there ever since.

Lolly

The late 1940s saw a player sign for Stranraer whose name is still revered at Stair Park John ‘Lolly’ McCutcheon. Originally a defender, Lolly was converted to a left winger during a spell at Tarff Rovers, and soon excelled in his new found forward freedom. His fierce, swerving cannonball shots were the talk of the terraces for many years, as he scored an incredible 238 goals in 239 games for the Blues, before retiring in 1958.

Rangers come to town

The town went football crazy in 1948, as the mighty Glasgow Rangers with their ‘Iron Curtain’ defence came to Stranraer in the Scottish Cup First Round. Exact spectator numbers are hard to judge (officially 6500), with every vantage point from tree to railway yard being utilised. It would be fair to say not many in the town missed out as the local heroes lost by the narrowest of margins.

League status

The 1949/50 season saw Stranraer enter C Division – a league full of reserve teams from many of the country’s big boys. The club finally achieved full league status in 1955/6. It was forced to fight for its place in the leagues in the early 1960s along with four other minnow clubs, due a motion put forward by Rangers which threatened their expulsion. This was eventually defeated thanks to some legal wrangling, with Celtic stepping forward as a powerful ally, stating: “Stranraer are a small club which has done football a great deal of good” and “there should be no question of them being eliminated”.

IN TOWN TODAY, SATURDAY 22ND

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Brora Rangers, Bellslea Park Saturday 24th September 2022

Andrew Macrae received an early yellow card for simulation inside the home penalty area. Kieran Simpson tried his luck with a free kick after Sean Butcher had been fouled but his effort went well over. At the other end Dale Gillespie's corner was also sliced well over by Jordan Macrae.

On 12 minutes Sean Butcher flicked the ball up and saw his volley well saved by Ruardhri Nicol low at his right-hand post. Five minutes later a long free kick by William West was flicked on by Butcher to Scott Barbour who fed Aidan Combe and his shot was well saved by Nicol.

The Broch took the lead on 19 minutes with a cracking goal after Ryan Sargent pass the ball to Connor Wood who proceeded to curl a magnificent shot into the top corner from 18 yards. At the other end Martin Maclean tried to reply for the visitors but Joe Barbour pulled off a good save.

The home side produced another good passing move which ended in Wood firing over from 20 yards after Butcher had set him up. The Broch goal survived a real scare on 26 minutes when Tom Kelly's cross was met by Tony Dingwall who saw his shot deflected onto the post before being cleared by West. From the resultant corner by Gillespie Max Ewan saw his effort cleared off the line.

Nicol then sclaffed a clearance straight into the path of Barbour but the Brora keeper redeemed himself to save with his feet as the Broch striker looked to double the home sides lead. Just before the break Millar Gamble was yellow carded for pulling back Barbour. The Broch top scorer dusted himself down and curled a screamer into the top corner past the grasping hands of Nicol in the Brora goal

Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Brora Rangers 0

Both sides made half time substitutions with Greg Buchan being replaced by Logan Watt after suffering concussion when hit in the face by Ross Aitken's clearance. Butcher was booked for persistent fouling on 54 minutes and a minute later the free kick was cleared to the far side where Kelly picked the ball up and crossed for Ewan who squeezed the ball home from a tight angle to reduce the Broch's lead.

The Broch were reduced to ten men for the second home game in a row on 62 minutes when Butcher received a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Alistair Macdonald. Mark Nicolson was booked three minutes later for a late tackle on Connor Wood as tempers frayed. From the quick free kick Barbour fired in a shot which was always rising over.

On 70 minutes Kelly saw a shot from inside the box save by Barbour as the visitors looked for an equaliser. That duly came on 80 minutes when Kelly's cross was headed home by Andrew Macrae. There were a flurry of chances late on, first Andrew Macrae went close from Jordan Macrae's cross. At the other end Paul Campbell raced onto a Logan Watt pass but his parting shot went high over the crossbar.

v Fraserburgh, Lochside Park

29th August 2022

The visitors' started well when Callum Kelly's cross in the first minute was met by Ross Taylor but he saw his shot blocked by Zak Myles. Three minutes later Taylor came close again with an effort which went just flying over the crossbar.

On th seventh minute Stuart Laird created another opportunity for the Broch youngsters but he shot wide. It was all the away side in the opening minutes and Kelly almost broke the deadlock when he raced in on goal only to see his shot clip the crossbar and go over.

The Broch under 18s took the lead on thirteen minutes when Kelly's flick into the path of Taylor saw the captain side foot home from close range.

Hermes managed their first attempt on goal a minute later but they couldn't find an instant reply as Daniel Cummings denied Jamie Watson with a good save.

The Broch doubled their lead on 36 minutes when Laird's free kick was bulleted home by the head of Adam Henderson. Just before the break Kelly almost made it three when his header from a corner went narrowly over the bar.

Half Time: Hermes 0 Fraserburgh 2

Cameron Robertson almost caught out home keeper Myles when his cross from the right dipped just over the crossbar on 53 minutes. Three minutes later Cummings did well to save two attempts from Hermes players after a scramble ensued inside the Broch penalty area.

The visitors' made the points safe with a goal on 70 minutes. Aaron Miller crossed and fellow substitute Nicol Dall was on hand to fire the ball home. Five minutes later Miller was unlucky with a shot which flew just over.

On 76 minutes Ryan McLean tried his luck from outside the penalty area but his shot flew inches wide. Hermes had one final chance to pull a goal back in the last minute when Louie Patterson's shot brough out an excellent save from Broch keeper Cummings.

Scottish Cup 2nd Round Draw Sunday 18 September 2022

The draw for the 2022-23 Scottish Cup Second Round took place at Oriam this evening, with Scotland midfielder Ryan Jack on hand to do the honours alongside host Gordon Duncan. 40 teams will play out 20 ties, with the League Two clubs joining the competition at this stage, with the games set to take place on the weekend of Saturday 22 October.

Speaking after the draw, Ryan said: "My brother, Stephen, played for Banks O' Dee, so I had one eye on them in the draw. "I don't think it matters who you're playing for and what level you're at. The Scottish Cup is the one you want to do well in and there's always something special about the week leading up to the games. An extra edge. "Scoring in the Cup Final last year was a special moment, personally, but only because we went on to win. I think any kid who grows up kicking a ball dreams of achieving something like that."

Huntly v Fraserburgh, Christie Park

12th September 2022

The Broch U21s travelled to Huntly and were hit by a blitz inside the first 15 minutes. Owen Morris was first to try his luck with a shot on 6 minutes bringing out a good save from Sam Inglis. The home side took the lead on 13 minutes when Jamie Boylan scored with a rasping drive after his initial effort had been blocked.

Two minutes later Dillon Farquhar shot home after a deflection fell kindly into his path. The Broch managed to settle down and pulled a goal back on 20 minutes after Zane Laird broke free of the home defence and slotted the ball home.

Huntly restored their two goal lead three minutes later when Angus Grant lobbed Inglis. On 31 minutes Boylan went on a driving run into the Broch penalty area before shooting just wide. Zane Laird crossed for the unmarked Vinnie Ingleby to score from close range as the Broch reduced the leeway on 42 minutes. However just on the half time whistle Farquhar's cross found Grant and he nodded home to make it 4 2 to the home side.

Half Time: Huntly 4 Fraserburgh 2

It was the Broch who came out of the traps fast at the start of the second half with Zane Laird reducing the deficit on 49 minutes with a powerful shot. He had another effort 8 minutes later which was deflected wide. Ross Taylor then set up his strike partner only for him to see Fraser Hobday make a crucial save.

Just after the hour Cameron Robertson fired in a 20 yarder which Hobday did well to tip over the crossbar. The Broch were pushing for an equaliser and Zane Laird brough out another good save from Hobday on 74 minutes.

In the 89th minutes the visitors came so close to getting a point when Jamie Maclellan rose to bullet a header which smacked off the Huntly post. The leveller wasn't delayed for long however as in the 90th minute Ricky Milne turned the ball home inside the Huntly penalty box to give the Broch a deserved share of the points.

The Broch would go on to do the double over Huntly with a repeat 2-1 victory at Bellslea Park four days later. Goals from Gilbert Morrice and Billy Milne did the trick for the home side.

However, despite winning their next two games 2-1 away to Deveronvale and 6-4 at home over local rivals Peterhead earlier defeats in the competition 0-2 away to Peterhead and 2-3 at home to Deveronvale meant the Black and Whites did not progress from the section.

United v Fraserburgh, The Haughs, Turriff Friday 31st September 2022

This was the fourth Aberdeenshire Cup Final between the two sides with the Broch triumphing on the previous three occasions. Ross Aitken went on a good driving run on 7 minutes with his shot ending up just wide. William West found Scott Barbour with a pss into the Formartine box on 19 minutes but his shot drifted wide.

Midway through the half Kieran Lawrence had an efoort just wide of Joe Barbor's goal after Jonathan Smith's flick on. A minute later Barbour's cross was cleared to the edge of the box and Paul Young connected well only for Ewen Macdonald to tip the ball round the post. Young went close again on 26 minutes when West chipped the ball forward to Ryan Sargent who laid the ball off to the Broch midfielder who drove the ball over the crossbar.

Formartine were next to create a chance when Smith saw his near post effort saved by Barbour. In the 38th minute Paul Campbell should have done better when he found space but sclaffed his shot wide. United took the lead on 43 minutes when Julian Wade's shot was blocked but fell kindly for Scott Lisle who slotted the ball past the exposed Barbour in the Broch goal.

Half Time: Formartine United 1 Fraserburgh 0

The Broch came out swinging at the start of the second half and Barbour saw his shot turned away by Macdonald. On 50 minutes Barbour's corner from the right was headed into his own net by Aaron Norris under presure from two Broch players. Fraserburgh were sensing blood now and Campbell laid the ball off to Connor Wood on 62 minutes but Macdonald did well to save the winger's shot

Barbour then curled in another dangerous corner which Bryan Hay volleyed wide. Both side rang the changes in an effort to get fresh legs on the pitch as the game moved to the final fifteen minutes. Macdonald pulled off a brilliant double save on 84 minutes when first he palmed away Jamie Beagrie's shot from the edge of the box. The rebound fell to Aitken on the right who saw his effort beaten away by the Formartine stopper.

Three minutes from time Smith blazed over from 10 yards out and in stoppage time Matthew McLean received a striaght red card for a high lunge on Beagrie.

Full Time: Formartine United 1 Fraserburgh 1

Jonathan Crawford and Kieran Simpson traded spot kicks in the shootout before Wade saw his effort saved by Barbour. Sean Butcher netted for the Broch whilst Mark Gallagher struck the post for Formartine. Campbell put the Broch 3 1 up before Daniel Park scored to reduce the leeway. Barbour then saw his potential cup winning spot kick saved by Macdonald but Cole Anderson couldn't take the shootout to the final kick when Barbour saved to give the Broch their third success in the competition in the last four years and make it four out of four against Formartine in Aberdeenshire Cup Finals since the North Lodge side joined the Highland League in 2009/10

Youth Cup 1st Round, Turriff United v Fraserburgh, The Haughs

Friday 16th September 2022

The Broch youngster created an early chance when Ross Taylor fed Stuart Laird but the winger saw his shot go wide of the post. Nairn Thompson for Turriff and Ross Taylor for Fraserburgh were booked in the first quarter of the game as neither side got into any rhythm.

On 26 minutes Taylor had an effort for the visitors which home keeper Aidan Linton did well to save. Two minutes later Laird saw his goal-bound shot blocked by the home defence.

The visitors were forcing the pace and a good driving run on 34 minutes by Taylor saw the Broch captain cut the ball back for Callum Kelly only for Linton to thwart the young striker.

Two minutes later Kelly set up Ricky Milne but he saw his shot go agonisingly wide of the goal. The opening goal was only delayed by second however as Taylor cut the ball back to Kelly who slotted it home from close range.

Half Time: Turriff United 0 Fraserburgh 1

The Broch brough on Aaron Miller to replace Ethan Sutherland just after the hour and he set up Taylor on 66 minutes but once again Linton did well to save. At the other end Sam Inglis had to react smartly to deny Harry Copeman with Turriff's first real effort on goal.

Vinnie Ingleby then replaced Stuart Laird and almost immediately he was involved in the action setting up Kelly but his effort was blocked. On 79 minutes the Broch doubled their lead when Miller's shot was deflected into his own net by the unfortunate Owen Emslie.

The Broch made another couple of changes on 87 minutes as they looked to see out the game with Taylor and Kelly coming off, replaced by Nicol Dall and Ben Riddell respectively. Turriff has once last change to pull back a goal but Inglis did well to thwart Ebube Anyaegbunam.

A youthful Broch side took the field against their more experienced opponents but the started well and scored after five minutes when Callum Kelly beat the Vale defence and flicked the ball over Jamie Shingler before rolling the ball into the net.

The visitors created two good chances on 12 minutes when Michael Watson had a shot deflected wide and from the resultant corner James Whyte forced a good save from Sam Inglis.

On 14 minutes Kyle Mackillop Hall came close with a 20 yard free kick which whistled just wide of Inglis' left hand upright. A minute later Logan Watt found space inside the visitor's box but his shot was saved at the near post.

The second Broch goal arrived on 26 minutes when Zane Laird jinked his way along the goal-line before curling a shot which Liam May turned into his own net. Two minutes later Laird was on the end of a good passing move, involving Watt, Ethan Sutherland and Ross Taylor, to slot the ball home.

On 34 minutes Ryan McLean tried his luck from distance but his wind assisted shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Shingler. Four minutes later Watt found Kelly inside the box and the striker turned his marker only to see his shot go narrowly wide.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 3 Deveronvale 0

Deveronvale pulled a goal back when a cross into the Fraserburgh box saw Antonio Jam and Zane Laird arrive at the same time as keeper Inglis. The ball ended up in the back of the net off the unfortunate Laird and Jam was injured in the pile up and was replaced by Ewan Skinner after a lengthy delay which saw the Deveronvale player stretchered off. Inglis was able to continue after treatment.

The Broch restored their three goal lead when Zane Laird completed his hat trick on 63 minutes. Midway through the half Mackillop Hall crossed for Watson who could only head wide of Inglis' goal.

On 71 minutes Kelly fired in a fizzing shot which went just wide of Shingler's goal. Watt had a great chance to make it five for the Broch on 88 minutes but he fired straight at the Vale keeper.

HIGHLAND

One of our Board Sponsors, Screwfix, had a display competition recently and used us as the theme. Below are some pictures of the display in their shop. Hopefully they can get through and ultimately win the competition.

Branch Manager, Pamela Barclay told us “Each year Screwfix has a Store Of The Year competition, between all of its stores, where the overall winner gets recognition and a prize for its team. The theme this year was 'Best of the Best.’ We wanted to tie the theme to something local and decided to chose Fraserburgh Football Club, due to them recently winning the Highland League. The company thought the idea was unique, personal and very much community focused, and they loved it! Visits were postponed due to the death of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, so we are waiting patiently to hear if we have got through to the next round of the competition.
