A LEGACY GIVING of

What began as a grassroots response to the HIV/AIDS crisis has grown into the philanthropic heart of Broadway. For nearly four decades, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has rallied the best of our community - artists, audiences, stage managers, producers, volunteers, donors, musicians, stagehands and more - to help those who need it most.

Since first supporting the Entertainment Community Fund’s HIV/AIDS initiative in 1988, our partnership has deepened and expanded. Today, Broadway Cares stands as the single largest funder of the Fund’s essential safety net of services, ensuring thousands in the performing arts and entertainment industry can access lifesaving health care, housing, mental health support, financial assistance and more.

Beyond the footlights, your support of Broadway Cares reaches nationwide through the National Grants Program. This year, support flowed to 483 food banks, health clinics, harm reduction programs and housing services in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Every dollar dropped into a Red Bucket becomes meals, medication, housing and hope for people facing illness, crisis or uncertainty.

Thanks to your unwavering support, 2025 marked the largest year of grantmaking in our history. Here’s how your generosity made a difference:

Dear Friends,

My 10-year-old son recently asked me, “Daddy, how is it that I can have two very different feelings at one time?”

That’s exactly how I feel right now - the weight of this moment, the struggle that so many are facing every day, juxtaposed with the joy and hope this community so brilliantly embodies and puts forth into the world.

Across the country, the organizations we support are facing mounting challenges. Funding cuts are forcing them to do more with less, even as the needs in their communities continue to grow. And yet, sitting here at Red Bucket Follies, surrounded by this beautiful community of artists, theater professionals, audiences and volunteers, I feel something powerful: I feel hope.

That hope comes from you.

Because of your generosity over the last six weeks and throughout the year, essential care has reached people in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. You have provided lifesaving medication, housing assistance, nutritious meals and compassionate support to countless people who had nowhere else to turn. Your kindness has been the difference between despair and light.

You also helped sustain the vital safety net services of the Entertainment Community Fund, ensuring that everyone in the performing arts and entertainment industry has access to the support they need. Whether it’s a doctor visit, a counseling session or a helping hand during a crisis, your generosity upholds a legacy of care that defines this community.

And what a year of community it has been. From our joyful annual events to the incredible energy of the casts, crews and volunteers who joined the spring and fall appeals, you have shown, again and again, what’s possible when compassion takes center stage.

None of this happens without you. No event. No grant. No moment of care.

As I look back on this first year as executive director, I’m profoundly grateful for each of you who make this work possible. Your generosity ensures that hope persists even in uncertain times, and that no one in our Broadway and entertainment family is left to face hardship alone.

Thank you for your kindness, your spirit and your unwavering belief in what we can achieve together.

BEHIND RED BUCKET

Long before they became the iconic symbol of Broadway compassion, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ Red Buckets began with a simple, bold idea. In 1989, the Off-Broadway cast of Steel Magnolias stepped forward - literally. They asked their audience, directly from the stage, to support friends and colleagues living with HIV/AIDS through Equity Fights AIDS.

Audiences responded with overwhelming generosity. In just 10 days, that small Off-Broadway company raised nearly $8,000 - proof that when artists speak from the heart, audiences listen.

Two years later, Keith Carradine and the cast of The Will Rogers Follies brought the idea to Broadway. Carradine turned to the audience after the curtain call and made the first Broadway appeal. Soon, other productions were asking their theater owners and producers, “Can we do that, too?” The Red Bucket tradition took root.

Just months after Steel Magnolias launched in-theater fundraising, the community gathered at the St. James Theatre on November 28, 1989, for the first Gypsy of the Year - now known as Red Bucket Follies. Hosted by Tyne Daly, Jonathan Hadary and the company of Gypsy, the inaugural event united an extraordinary lineup of shows and raised more than $64,000.

From those grassroots beginnings, the Red Buckets have become the defining tradition of generosity across Broadway, Off-Broadway, national touring productions and audiences nationwide. Since that first curtain appeal, more than $104 million raised through Red Buckets in the spirit of care and compassion. That’s millions of people receiving meals and medication, health care and housing because of your support.

Thank you for being part of the Red Buckets enduring legacy.

The Shubert Organization is proud to support Broadway Cares and this year’s Red Bucket Follies.

YOUR SUPPORT IN ACTION

Every donation to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS carries a simple promise: no one in our theater community, or beyond it, should face hardship alone.

For more than three decades, Broadway Cares has worked hand in hand with the Entertainment Community Fund to build a lifeline of compassionate support for everyone in entertainment and the performing arts. What began with our investment to start the Fund’s HIV/AIDS Initiative in 1988 has grown into a partnership powering a full safety net of essential services, from emergency financial aid to mental health support, from navigating health insurance to personalized care at The Friedman Health Center.

That same commitment extends nationwide through our National Grants Program, which this year supported 483 organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. Food banks, community health clinics, harmreduction programs and housing services turn your generosity into something tangible: meals, medication, health care and stability for people facing illness or uncertainty.

To see this impact up close, watch Your Support in Action, our online series spotlighting the people doing this work every day. Hear directly from the leaders, advocates and activists on the front lines who are delivering hope to those who need it most. Watch at broadwaycares.org/ yoursupport.

As the head of the Fund’s Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, Angela Babin understands the aspects of an artist’s life that make accessing traditional care difficult. Performers often lack stable health insurance, work unpredictable schedules and face the unique pressure of staying “on” even when unwell.

A diagnosis or family emergency can jeopardize both health and livelihood. The initiative steps in to bridge those gaps - covering rent or medical bills, offering counseling and connecting clients with trusted specialists who understand the demands of a creative life.

MEET ANGELA

“We are needed so much right now,” Babin said. “Our community went through COVID and its shutdown, the writers’ strike and wildfires. Now, in the United States, there are challenges affecting health care and health insurance coverage. People can’t afford treatments. But when people are scared or struggling, they’re still part of this community, and we won’t let them face it alone.”

Margaret lives with HIV and is a client of Nashville CARES, a Broadway Cares grantee since 1988. Thanks to the support she receives there, Margaret was able to take control of her health and her life.

“I lost four apartments, and every time, Nashville CARES was there to pick me up,” Margaret said. “They never criticized me, never judged me. Through their programs, I learned everything I could about living with HIV, and got control of my health. But if folks start cutting the resources that keep us going, the death rate’s gonna soar again.”

MEET MARGARET

We'd like to thank the members of these unions for their continued participation and support of the audience appeals made once again in Broadway theaters.

With the added support of our friends Off-Broadway and in national touring shows across the country, these appeals are the backbone and muscle of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ annual fundraising efforts.

These appeals could not be done without the generous collective efforts of

Actors’ Equity Association - actors and stage managers

American Federation of Musicians Local 802

ATPAM - company managers, house managers and press agents

The Dramatists Guild of America

IATSE Local 1 - stagehands, carpenters, electricians and props

IATSE Local 306 - ushers, ticket takers and doormen

IATSE Local 751 - treasurers and ticket sellers

Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Local 798

Stage Directors and Choreographers Society

Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 764

and, of course, all of our friends at The Broadway League for making these efforts welcome in their theaters as a part of their productions.

For 37 years we have said, “What we do together makes a difference.”

This proves it. Our sincere thanks to everyone in our community.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

The Leadership Council is a major driver of Broadway Cares’ hallmark fundraising and community building. As fundraisers, ambassadors and advocates, council members engage their networks to make a difference with Broadway Cares.

A key feature of being a member of the Leadership Council is participating in and inviting one’s circle to Broadway Cares’ special events and performances that take supporters inside Broadway for one-of-a-kind and personal experiences.

Learn how to get involved with the Leadership Council by contacting Brian Marshall, senior development officer, at marshall@broadwaycares.org.
