Thank you for joining us in gathering once again on this most picturesque place on the Great South Bay. We are endlessly grateful for our friendships old and new here in Fire Island Pines.

There truly is no better place than Fire Island to celebrate these relationships through dance and art. The island has long been a beloved respite for the LGBTQ+ community; a safe space where people are free to be who they are and love who they love. Fire Island sets the stage, literally and figuratively, for beautiful and free artistic expression.

Off the island, though, these are troubling times for our community. Many are without a welcoming place and supportive home to turn to; living among volatile rhetoric and dangerous assaults on our rights, our civil liberties and ourselves.

The good, vital work that you support through Dancers Responding to AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS feels all the more pressing. Your ongoing assistance ensures that those in need in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. receive meals and medication, health care and hope.

We are so grateful for the world-class dancers, choreographers and dance companies who make this festival and our work possible, as well as the theatrical professionals and volunteers who transform this idyllic spot on the bay into a stunning waterfront venue.

ALAN CUMMING HOST

Alan Cumming is beyond eclectic. His most recent projects include creating a dance theater piece about the Scottish bard Robert Burns, lip-synching the protagonist in a documentary, directing a podcast series about a sperm bank heist, playing a gangster opposite Liam Neeson in a Neil Jordan film, curating a cabaret festival in Australia and recording a duet with a Gaelic rapper. Perhaps not surprisingly, Time magazine called him one of the three most fun people in show business (the others were Cher and Stanley Tucci).

Thirty years ago his Hamlet stormed the West End and he was hailed as “an actor knocking at the door of greatness.” A quarter of a century ago he was a sensation as Cabaret’s Master of Ceremonies in a production that forever changed the Broadway landscape. A decade ago his visceral, virtually one-man Macbeth was a stunning, transatlantic coup de theatre.

His screen work ranges from art house to blockbuster, cult to mainstream, but his performances are always indelible and some immortal.

He is the author of six books including a New York Times #1 bestselling memoir, performs in concert regularly in halls around the world and co-owns his own, eponymous cabaret bar Club Cumming, a home for “all ages, all genders, all colors, all sexualities, where kindness is all and anything could happen!”

In a New York City apartment 32 years ago, two dozen dancers brainstormed what they could do to help so many of their colleagues who were battling AIDS. Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, dancers with Paul Taylor Dance Company at the time, mobilized the group and ultimately created Dancers Responding to AIDS in 1991. It was the dance community’s first ongoing effort to raise awareness and money to directly help those living with AIDS.

The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need.

As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Dancers Responding to AIDS helps support the essential programs of the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund), including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource while also providing grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

Funds raised by DRA and Broadway Cares help ensure that those most in need have access to lifesaving medications, counseling, healthy meals, emergency financial assistance and more.

Dancers Responding to AIDS has proven since 1991 that what we do together makes a difference.

All InClusive was commissioned by Works & Process for premiere at the Guggenheim. This work was developed during Works & Process LaunchPAD residencies at Bethany Arts Community and The Pocantico Center.

Masterz at Work Dance Family is a group of talented individuals that come from all different dance backgrounds including jazz, hip hop, street jazz, house, African, voguing and contemporary. While company members all have their own dance goals and accomplishments, when the company comes together it is always a masterpiece.

Black trans femme choreographer Courtney Washington Balenciaga, a legend within the ballroom community, founder of the Kiki House of Juicy Couture and leader of The House of Balenciaga fuses street dance, street jazz, ballroom and hip-hop. Informed by her own experience as a teased queer teenager who found refuge in dance, her work conveys how her gender transition spurred transformative emotional, creative and physical liberation. The dances she creates are a representation of resiliency and foster community and family in under-resourced areas of Brooklyn.
