A HISTORY OF GIVING

Equity Fights AIDS was founded in October 1987 by the Council of Actors’ Equity Association. Money raised through the efforts of Equity theater companies across the country was specifically earmarked for The AIDS Initiative at the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund).

Broadway Cares was founded in February 1988 by members of The Producers’ Group. Money raised was earmarked to be awarded to AIDS service organizations nationwide, including Equity Fights AIDS.

In May 1992, Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merged to become Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The Board of Trustees of this newly established not-for-profit fundraising organization assumed the missions of the previously separate organizations and continues to fund the social service work of the Entertainment Community Fund and award grants three times a year to HIV/AIDS service organizations nationwide.

Unlike most other nonprofit, grant-making organizations, Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS must raise every single dollar of our philanthropic budget every year in order to fulfill our mission. In turn, Broadway Cares works hard to ensure that the money we raise is spent carefully and wisely on programs where these hard-earned funds can have the maximum possible impact.

Dear Friends,

It’s been four years of firsts. After keeping the ghostlight on throughout the longest shutdown in Broadway’s history, Broadway Cares events have returned one at a time as life in NYC returns to a new sense of normalcy.

First back were the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction in 2021 and Broadway Backwards in 2022. Then, we tiptoed back into fundraising in theaters. In our first postshutdown campaign, four Broadway shows took the leap to welcome our Red Buckets back. Throughout the year, more productions in New York and across the country steadily rejoined our fundraising fold.

All of these firsts led to today. This 34th annual edition of the Easter Bonnet Competition marks the first time since 2019 that we’ve come together to celebrate a season of friendly yet competitive fundraising. Here we recognize the 25 Broadway, five Off-Broadway and 12 national touring productions that banded together in goodwill this spring.

Many of these are longtime participants. In a testament to three decades of friendship and support of Broadway Cares, the company of The Phantom of the Opera fundraised even in the final weeks of its remarkable 35-year run. Just as striking is the number of recently opened Broadway shows that participated. Mere days after their opening nights, seven Main Stem productions began appealing to their audiences to provide health care and hope through our Red Buckets.

More than three decades ago, in the height of the AIDS crisis, the Easter Bonnet Competition was born from an impassioned desire to survive the worst that was handed to us individually by gathering together. Over the years, our extended family of colleagues, co-workers and neighbors have fueled us through a variety of changes and challenges. That’s why after coming through the years of being physically distant, it has never been more important to come together and celebrate this community’s compassion.

Already this year, your benevolent spirit has been shared with hundreds of social service organizations. In February, Broadway Cares awarded a record $2.8 million to 141 food pantries, congregate meal and meal delivery programs across the country. Just last month, an additional $1.1 million was awarded on your behalf to 47 nationally recognized LGBTQ+ health clinics and advocacy organizations. More grants will be awarded in June.

And so far this year, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has shared $5.8 million with the Entertainment Community Fund. Thanks to you, the Fund will be able to continue helping folks onstage, backstage and throughout the entertainment community by providing a safe place to turn when they’re facing health care challenges or personal crises.

Now, as the house fills and the lights dim for the first Easter Bonnet Competition in four years, it is with a full heart and immense gratitude that I say to you, on behalf of all of us at Broadway Cares: Welcome back!

Sincerely,

A BIT OF BONNET HISTORY

The precursor to the Easter Bonnet Competition was an informal show in 1986 initiated by wardrobe supervisors Gayle Patton and Irene Bunis called “The Queen of Hearts.” It took place backstage at the Palace Theatre where the original La Cage aux Folles was a smash hit. Individual cast members from La Cage were judged on poise, personality and talent with the rest of the company voting by putting dollar bills in a jar for each contestant. The effort raised $1,200 for the National AIDS Fund.

The event was so much fun for the La Cage company that the following year, Gayle suggested an “Easter Bonnet Competition.” Other Broadway companies were invited to participate. Fundraising ideas flourished, bonnets became more elaborate, stars joined in as presenters and performers and by 1990 – when it was presented on stage at the Majestic Theatre – the Easter Bonnet Competition had become the Broadway community’s premier AIDS fundraising event.

Produced by Suzanne Ishee and a host of dedicated coordinators and volunteers for its first eight years, the Easter Bonnet returned to the Palace Theatre in 1995, produced for the first time by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. In 1998, the show moved to the New Amsterdam Theatre where for nine years it felt as much at home as the peacocks that decorate the ornate interior. In 2007, the event followed The Lion King to the Minskoff Theatre.

Entertainment Community Fund

Health Care Worthy of a Standing Ovation

Nestled 12 floors above the heart of Times Square, The Samuel J. Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts provides a vital medical facility for the theater community with a show-stopping personality.

Opened six years ago and backed by $5.9 million in support so far from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the center embraces its show business connection. Though the center is open to the public, it’s specifically committed to providing medical care for the Broadway and performing arts community, even offering extended hours to accommodate entertainment industry work schedules.

In addition to three family medicine doctors covering every health question and challenge, the center also offers an acclaimed podiatrist and other powerhouse specialists focused on gynecology, sports medicine and more.

Last year, Broadway Cares provided another $1 million in support to the Friedman Health Center, one of more than a dozen Entertainment Community Fund initiatives that receive Broadway Cares funding each year.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ connection to the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund) reaches back three decades, first to the creation of the HIV/AIDS Initiative in 1988. Broadway Cares provided the initial funding for the initiative and continues to provide the majority of its annual budget.

In 1996, Broadway Cares expanded its support to provide initial funding to launch the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative. In 2022 alone, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS awarded the Entertainment Community Fund $8.25 million, supporting The Friedman Health Center, the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, as well as Addiction and Recovery Services, Artists Health Insurance Resource Center, The Dancers’ Resource, The Stage Managers’ Project and a host of other vital services.

The Friedman Health Center is run in partnership between the Fund and Mount Sinai Doctors. Patients not only have quick referrals to specialists through the Mount Sinai Health System, they have quick connections to the other services provided by the Fund.

“I have diagnosed a handful of clients with HIV and within 10 minutes, someone from the HIV/AIDS Initiative is up here with them, counseling and helping them with resources,” Dr. Jason Kindt, Friedman Health Center’s medical director, said. “That doesn’t happen in other offices. Those referrals can take months.”

Kindt said the center wouldn’t exist without the generosity of the Broadway Cares donors. “Health care is expensive,” Kindt said, “and this practice is fully subsidized by the Entertainment Community Fund, so Broadway Cares’ support through the Fund is essential to The Friedman Health Center and so appreciated.”

This proves it. Our sincere thanks to all.

RED BUCKET VOLUNTEERS

An army of 207 tireless volunteers and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS staffers enhanced the Easter Bonnet Competition in-theater fundraising efforts this season. They held Red Buckets and sold autographed memorabilia in the lobbies of Broadway and Off-Broadway theaters. Over the course of six weeks of audience appeals, volunteers filled 3,458 shifts at 1,053 appeals. Our sincere thanks to these unsung heroes, Broadway Cares’ famous bucket brigade.

Sharing Broadway’s Generosity with South Africa

The incidence of HIV/AIDS in South Africa remains among the highest in the world as an estimated 7.5 million people are living with HIV. It’s a reality that continues to hit close to the heart for many in the cast of Disney’s acclaimed production of The Lion King. As natives of South Africa, they’ve seen the epidemic’s toll firsthand in their hometowns and villages.

In honor of the South African company members who have steadfastly joined their American cast mates in The Lion King’s fundraising for Broadway Cares during the past 25 years, more than $5.9 million has been awarded in grants to South African HIV/AIDS organizations. This year, $175,000 has been shared so far with 14 service providers identified by the South African actors in the Broadway and national touring companies of The Lion King

South African service providers receiving grants from Broadway Cares support a wide scope of people in need, ranging from HIV-positive individuals in small, rural villages to homeless children and marginalized women in urban areas. From Durban and Johannesburg to Tongatt and Umthwalume, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is proud to share the successful fundraising by the casts of The Lion King with those in South Africa who so urgently need a helping hand.

Record Support Provides More Meals

to People Across the Country

Irma Almanza, who relies on the twice-monthly food pantry offered by AIDS Circle of Hope of North Central Texas, will have nutritious meals on her table thanks to you.

So will Ted Liso in Los Angeles, Tina Price in Atlanta and tens of thousands of others served by 141 food service and meal delivery programs across the country funded by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Broadway Cares’ National Grants Program provided those 141 programs a record $2,827,500 this February, surpassing last year’s record by $295,000. It’s the largest increase in any single grant round from one year to the next in Broadway Cares history.

The annual food grants ensure that those affected by HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses can get access to healthy meals through food pantries, meal deliveries and congregate food programs. These vital programs and organizations are too often underserved, overlooked or work with limited access to resources from larger funders, foundations and governments.

The 2023 annual grants were the product of the appeals made across Broadway, Off-Broadway and by national tours during Red Bucket Fall Fundraising and from Broadway Cares’ year-end campaign. They were awarded by a committee of 20 Broadway stage managers and actors who were integral to the in-theater fundraising efforts.

The food grants support organizations large and small, in cities, suburbs and rural areas nationwide. Some, like AIDS Circle of Hope of North Central Texas in Wichita Falls are entirely volunteer run, serving 11 counties and offering the twice-a-month food pantry that Almanza visits.

Others, such as Open Arms in Minnesota, serve more than 2,100 meals every weekday. The grant Open Arms receives will support its daily food delivery program for people living in Minneapolis, St. Paul and across the state.

“We are grateful to Broadway Cares’ supporters because you’ve been a stellar, constant partner for us,” Lisa Lane, chief external affairs officer at Open Arms, said. “The work you do to give people a little bit less stress, a little bit more ability to cope, a little bit more time with their family is just so important.”

Homes are our most valuable assets, and a significant part of their value—both intrinsically and otherwise—is the neighborhoods in which they are situated. It helps to have a trusted advisor with a comprehensive knowledge of both the local market at large, as well as your target neighborhood. The result? A successful deal and a relationship that lives well beyond the transaction.

As a Sutton Place resident and real estate agent for over 25 years, I can provide clients buying or selling a home in the neighborhood with a unique, competitive advantage. I truly live and breathe my work here. From knowledge of available homes and trends in pricing to neighborhood shops, dining and schools, consider me your “Sutton Specialist!”

Having achieved over half a billion in sales for Sutton Place homes alone, I am confident we can work together to either find your dream home in the area, or sell your current home at top dollar. As a matter of fact, there are very few buildings and co-op boards I haven’t worked with in this beautiful neighborhood. Let me be a resource for you as you navigate your Sutton Place real estate journey—not merely a real estate agent, but a true advisor.
