Debra Monk Birthday Bash will kick into gear at 8 pm on Monday, February 24, 2014, at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, with a VIP reception immediately following. The concert, directed by JoAnn M. Hunter with music direction by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, will be “a big ol’ party” with great music, stories and a few dirty jokes thrown in along the way. Debra made her Broadway debut in 1982 as Prudie Cupp in the nowclassic Pump Boys and Dinettes, the country-flavored revue set at a gas station and diner below the Mason-Dixon Line.Debra co-authored the show with her Pump Boys cast mates, who collectively also created the Off-Broadway cult favorite Oil City Symphony. She’s received four Tony Award nominations for her performances, winning for Featured Actress in a Play for Lanford Wilson’s Redwood Curtain. She also was nominated for her portrayals of Rosemary Sydney, the self-proclaimed old-maid schoolteacher in Picnic, marathon dancer Shelby Stevens in Steel Pier and the brassy Carmen Bernstein in Curtains. Debra’s appeared in 11 Broadway shows, most recently as Big Mama in the 2013 revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Television fans may know her best for her gripping, Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Katie Sipowicz on the long-running hit drama “NYPD Blue.” Her television work spans featured roles on nearly two dozen shows, including Mr. Schuester’s mom on “Glee,” George’s mom on “Grey’s Anatomy” and Ellen’s mom on “Damages.” She can also be seen in the about-to-air seasons of “Girls” and “Reckless.” Her TV movie appearances include The Music Man, Eloise at the Plaza, Ellen Foster and Redwood Curtain.

Oh, my God, I can’t believe how old I am? What happened?

It seems like yesterday I arrived at Penn Station as a young, hopeful actress, put my luggage down to ask someone directions and a derelict said: “Hey girlie, I wouldn’t leave that luggage there if I was you.” And that man became my first husband. Not really – but it would probably have been a better choice. Why am I rambling? Because I am so excited! Excited to be doing my first concert ever. The only way I agreed to this is if it benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. I love everyone at BC/EFA and the difference they are making right here in New York City and around the country. We have been friends and worked together for so many years. So for this birthday, instead of a small dinner with friends … or a big dinner by myself at home, I want to do something different, something fun and something for Broadway Cares. So I thought, what makes me happy? There are three things that make me happy, that I have been doing since I was a kid. Listening to rock and roll and folk and gospel and soul, telling dirty jokes and playing the drums. So that’s what I am going to do. And Tom Viola is just crazy enough to let me. I have some fabulous friends who will join me and a kicking rock and roll band, led by the amazing Mary-Mitchell Campbell. And some sassy choreography and direction by JoAnn M. Hunter. So please support Broadway Cares and come and party with us. It will be TOTALLY HOT AND A LITTLE DIRTY!!!

Sincerly,

Debra Monk
