One female dog and her offspring can produce as many as 76,000 puppies in a seven-year period. One female cat and her offspring can produce up to 420,000 kittens in a sevenyear period.

Those statistics make what we hope to do here today so desperately important. Each year, in New York City alone, 18,000 homeless animals are euthanized - each one as wonderful a dog or cat as the animals that you see here today.

More than 25 years ago, we decided that we wanted to do something about it and Broadway Barks was born. Drawing on the considerable resources and generosity of the entire Broadway community, we hope to not only find loving homes for each of the animals that we show you today, but also to plant the seed of awareness of the many thousands of animals who are out there that need you.

Thank you for being here with us. Only together can we begin to fight against this ever-growing problem.

Today is a great start!

The Benefits of Spaying & Neutering

There are great benefits to spaying & neutering for your pets

• Spaying and neutering help your dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

• Spaying and neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be difficult or expensive to treat.

• Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the chances of breast cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed before her first estrous cycle.

• Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

There are also great benefits for you

• Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions.

• Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark territory.

• Spaying dogs and cats eliminates heat cycles. Females in heat can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior and attract unwanted male companions.

• Spaying and neutering makes pets less likely to bite.

• Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than those that have been spayed or neutered.

• Neutering makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, get into fights or run away.

Dear Sweet Friends of the Broadway Community:

Welcome to the 27th anniversary of Broadway Barks! We greatly appreciate your help and support.

As we celebrate this year, I think about my dear friend Mary Tyler Moore with love, and everyone who has supported us through incredibly important productive years. You, my dear Broadway friends, have made this event so important … and of course, the rescue groups … you are my heroes!

During our journey we have collectively come together to expand and build an enduring movement to help more of our four-legged friends. Our collaborations with rescue groups helped to find loving homes for so many of our furry angels.

The great spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, in his book Guardians of Being, profoundly tells us about the healing quality of animals:

“The vital function that pets fulfill in this world hasn’t been fully recognized. They keep millions of people sane. They have become ‘Guardians of Being.’ We learn so much from our animals. Just watch a dog play or rest. They celebrate life by being completely present.”

I think all of us here today know that animals are an important part of our lives. This special connection, indeed bond, is why our cherished animals are so vital to our well-being and theirs, too.

I also smiled with joy when I read that Tolle “lived with many Zen Masters, all of them cats.” So, if you are looking for your little “Zen Master” or a dog that will take you on an adventure as you walk together, you’ve come to the right place.

Please enjoy the afternoon with all of us, your two and four-legged friends!

Thank you again for your help and support.

With much love and appreciation,

Pet

We are a non-funded/non-subsidized/all-volunteer/ foster-based 501(c)(3) no-kill animal rescue. We focus on saving death row, abused, discarded, natural disaster victims, neglected and medically needy canines. The pet overpopulation has gotten so far out of hand that millions are put to sleep every year because of human greed, ignorance and lack of compassion. We believe all dogs deserve a chance. Our main focus is rescuing and rehabilitating small dogs and puppies, most of which have been neglected, handicapped or have been abused. We assist in natural disasters, as well. Pet ResQ Inc. volunteers are on the ground searching, trapping and getting any animal that survived to a safe place. Once secured they are all placed into foster homes where the real work begins. They are vetted, groomed and evaluated. To date, we have rescued thousands of our furry friends and placed them into safe, loving forever homes. We rescue without prejudice. Once we commit to saving an animal, we do whatever it takes to get them ready for adoption. Pet ResQ Inc. runs strictly on donations with loving, dedicated volunteers and foster families.

July 12, 2025

Dear Friends:

Welcome to Broadway Barks, the only event on Broadway where the standing ovations are for sitting, staying and rolling over.

On behalf of everyone at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, we’re thrilled to once again introduce you to some furry new friends, hoping you’ll give one or two a standing ovation of your own by welcoming them into your heart and home.

Broadway Cares is proud to support the adorable cats and dogs you’ll meet today and also the incredible artists who champion them. While most of the grants provided by Broadway Cares to 484 organizations across the country support those facing critical illnesses, food insecurity, housing challenges, access to health care and poverty, we couldn’t be more proud to support eight wonderful organizations for people living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses to care for themselves and their beloved pets.

Today, we’re proud to join Bernadette Peters, Beth Leavel and a bevy of Broadway’s biggest pet lovers in Shubert Alley, alongside 27 incredible shelters and rescue organizations.

Since Broadway Barks began in 1999, more than 2,500 animals have found safe, loving homes - and I’m lucky enough to share mine with two of them. I adopted my cats, Sassy Pants and Cricket, after meeting them right here at Broadway Barks. Whether purring on my lap, sleeping on my legs at night or giving me and my family endless cuddles, they’ve made our life infinitely more full, loving and (let’s be honest) fur-covered.

I hope you find your own Sassy Pants and Cricket today. Thank you for changing lives - furry and otherwise - with us.

Sincerely,

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
