...words from the editor Hello and Happy Anniversary VIVYD Family!!! It is that time once again, IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY!!! Or rather the month in which we celebrate our first issue release.

Let me tell you, it has been a crazy, wild, exciting, and sometimes disappointing road, but at the end of the day “We are still here,” and that by itself is the fuel in which to continue to fight the good fight.

As in past Anniversary issues, I start off with like a state of union type announcement, and this year will be no different as I am happy to report the state of VIVYD is stronger than ever and we are steadily growing into new content and a more diverse product. This end-product diversity is going to be the way forward and open the doors to new forecasted and unseen projects on the horizon.

Our method of delivery for these upcoming projects will be very similar to the way in which Marvel Studios releases their content. Our plan is to develop and release content in a staggered phase approach. These stages will be from what is going to be known as the “Book of VIVYD” and be divided into volumes. These volumes will allow VIVYD Magazine to become more purposeful in the way we market, produce, and release future undertakings. These volumes will additionally upgrade to next sequential volume every year to two years and will give you the reader the best interactive experience with VIVYD. So, what does this mean for you? In short it means that as we level up, so will your anticipation and your involvement with us as we continue to provide you with a quality product and platform. Some of the titles that you can expect to be released in the next month or so will be VIVYD 24/7 and VIVYD Sandy Bottoms.

Both of these projects will feature submitted works as well editorial work from our amazing staff models and photographers.

In closing, it is exciting times around the old VIVYD campfire, and we are looking forward to providing you with the best that we have to offer. Stay tuned for the latest announcements and the introduction of all of our latest content to be highlighted in Volume One from the Book of VIVYD.

Peyton North The absolute best thing about meeting, shooting, and interviewing other people is the opportunity to hear someone else’s story and being able to share that story with other people. Whether it is a story of success, failure, beginnings, or endings there is something that is always amazing about how people get through life. Being in this business I have been fortunate enough to meet all kinds of people and glimpse just a small part of the complexity that makes us all human.

In this question-and-answer session, we get an opportunity to see a little more into the journey of performing artist, artist, and designer Peyton North. The first time that I saw this young man was on the runways of New Orleans Fashion Week’s “Taste of Fashion Week.” His energy was so authentic, you could feel it throughout the whole venue, I felt that he was someone that I wanted to meet and now share some of his story with you.

Welcome to “Just Ask!” I would like to thank you for the opportunity to conduct this interview. It has been exciting getting to know some of your work and conversing with you over the last few months. There is a story here of true inspiration and determination that our readers and followers would love to hear. So, let’s begin with the basics…

JA In your own words who is Peyton North?

A Soul whose goal is to unify people with the light of authentic positivity through Art. If you had to describe yourself, how would you do so?

My purpose in this lifetime is to create art that has a timeless impact. I am a vessel for what I believe is the message I’m supposed to send.

“The light is the message; I am the envelope & my talents are the mail.” - Peyton North Where did you grow up and what did Peyton North’s childhood look like?

Born at Woman’s hospital in Sherwood Forest, Baton Rouge, Louisiana aka DA225BABY. My whole life it’s been a team of my Mom and I. Parents divorced at 2. My dad wasn’t in my daily life for most of it.

We lived in B.R. until I was 6 then moved to North Carolina for 2 years then Mom Remarried & we moved back to Louisiana, but this time to a real Rodeo Horseback Ranch in Central. From age 7-10 I was completely immersed in the “Cowboy Lifestyle.”

I learned how to ride horses at a National Champion winning level in addition to Rodeo Bulls. Some of the best years of my Life.

My at-the-time stepdad is one of the most intelligent and well-read, yet cynical and unhappy people I’ve ever met. He verbally abused my mom everyday all day. My grandfather lived with us so the people that took care of my grandparents helped raise me too. One of them in particular, Miss Carol Hodges, played a huge role in raising me. Right before 5th grade, my stepdad sold the horses and we moved to Broadmoor, Baton Rouge, Louisiana where I lived from 11-17 and played competitive soccer. It was my outlet and I practiced from 3:30-9PM every day for tournaments across the south every weekend.

Freshman year I was so tired of hearing my Mom and stepdad argue, I bought a tent and lived in my back yard for 3 weeks before I moved into my attic where I spent the rest of high school. Up there is where I learned to rap. There was no wall insulation so 100 degrees outside felt like 120 inside and 27 degrees, just below freezing felt like that, freezing.

Graduated in 2017 and dropped out of college twice because I’d draw, paint and make music all day, the rest is history. More to come…

How long have you been making music, designing clothing, and making art?

I played the trumpet in 5th grade but failed the class because I never liked performing or practicing. I started rapping at 16.

My first memory of fashion design was when my 12-year-old soccer team were getting new uniforms and I designed what I thought the new ones should look like/what technology should be implemented. I was a fanatic for the newest soccer cleats too, hours and hours of learning about the latest brands, styles and technologies.

Art in general, I’ve been creating since I wore diapers. I used to draw with crayons all over the walls of the house. My mom supported and never scolded me for it. We’re born free spirits and taught to embrace captivity; mentally, physically, and spiritually. Stay wild.

What is the inspiration behind your art? And how do you hope to impart that vision to anyone viewing your work?

The inspiration behind my Art is LIFE itself and every work of Art I embark on represents a time stamp in history even if it’s just a doodle. Creation is taking something that was once non-existent and bringing it to Life, I’m inspired by that. I want people to witness my Art and be motivated to beat the person they looked at in the mirror yesterday.

What is the inspiration behind Peyton North, who inspires you, what inspires you?

The desire to connect to the truth and joy of LIFE especially in the darkest places. I Live to leave a legacy that can inspire someone that will live hundreds if not thousands of years into the future.

Our Life gives power to our Legacy but our Legacy is more powerful than our Life ever was.

How did your fashion journey begin? How did your music journey begin?

My journey in fashion began when I would go visit my dad in the summers and him and my stepmom dressed my stepbrother and I in the same clothes.

At 5 years old, I hated it. I would always wear superhero costumes out in public like Batman and Buzz Lightyear. Restaurants, Doctor’s Appointments, walks in the park; didn’t matter, I’m flexin my expression and don’t care about impressions.

Musically, it was 3 main reasons: 1. It was because I heard songs on the radio and said “I can do better” my friend said “then do it” so I did.

2. My parents were always fighting and being an only child, I felt alone and had no one to talk to. A mic has no choice but to listen, it was an outlet.

3. The confidence and inner fire for speaking the rawest form of the truth that ignited in me when I discovered Ice Cube and NWA.

Who were some of your greatest influences as you began your fashion journey and who are your greatest influences in music?

First that come to mind…not in any order Fashion: Marty McFly, Fresh Prince of Belaire, James Dean, Michael Jackson, Prince, Goldie from The Mack (1973), Salvador Dali, Jean-Michel Basquiat, LL Cool J, and The Great Gatsby Music: Authenticity and Timelessness, Ice cube and NWA, Lil Wayne, Freddy Mercury and Queen, Miguel, Childish Gambino, Outkast, MF Doom, Kevin Gates, Young Thug, Michael Jackson, My Chemical Romance, Nelly, Felly, DaReal Gee Money, Green Day, Kanye West, Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco, Lauryn Hill, and Etta James Just to name a few…

If there was one artist, performing artists, designer, etc., alive or deceased that you would like to spend the day with, who would it be, why that person, and what do you hope to receive from that person?

I’d love to spend the day with someone who feels like they deciphered and can understand the language of my paintings whose intention is to pick up my mission where I left off after I’m dead. My goal is to lead the Artistic Revolution. I’d love to meet a Revolutionary that was inspired by my revolution who at the time of writing this, hasn’t been born yet.

What were some of the early roadblocks you encountered while starting your career?

Self-sabotage. I’ve always known that my purpose is bigger than myself but would often cut my legs out from underneath myself at the end of projects because I didn’t finish the last couple steps of completion. I failed Art class my freshman year of high school because I never turned any of my assignments in because I didn’t think they were good enough. A quote I came up with to describe this is, “Don’t wait to prove yourself right that you can miss opportunity.”

How have you evolved over the years as an artist and designer?

My one rule for my Art is “You can’t mess it up because it’s a freestyle.” Over the years I’ve redefined my definition of what “Perfect” means. I used to think it meant that it meant flawless or “without error” but that is not true. To me, “Perfect” means true and authentic.

Example: An ancient Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery called “Kintsugi” is gluing what’s broken back together with Gold. It beautifies what was once considered “an imperfection” and highlights it as the keynote of the story.

What do you love the most about Peyton North?

I love to find what I have in common with and connect with people from all walks of Life. I look at people and think about what kind of kid they were on the playground. I believe that everything that happens is meant to be and we don’t miss out on what doesn’t happen because it wasn’t meant to be. Everything is connected and everything has a reason even if we never figure it out in our lifetime.

I am Amazing. I will do Amazing things and no one can stop me.

How much has COVID affected your career and career goals?

Every great invention or advancement in human history was at one time just an idea in one person’s head. Don’t hate the world because they don’t see your vision, show them.

VIVY It is a very common mistake, but Big Ben is actually not the name for the iconic Tower in London. Big Ben is actually the name for the clock in the Tower. Even locals nowadays refer to this place as the Big Ben tower. The tower is located in the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. 2012 onward the object is named as Elizabeth Tower, but in the past, the tower was known as the Clock Tower.

London is an important cultural and historical centre and museums could not have missed in this area. If you get to visit this wonderful city you would definitely lose a lot from your trip if you don’t stop by one of them. The British Museum, the National Gallery, the Imperial War Museum, the British Library and the Wallace Collection are just some of them.

What Do You Really Want?

reedom. I woke up one morning with this word on my mind. I was like that can be my theme for 2022. I dismissed it though. I felt like it was too simple a concept and how would I incorporate it into my life. Then I spent a good portion of my day cleaning out my emails. I deleted ones I didn’t care about and started to read ones from people I follow. I came across one particular email from Danielle Leslie, CEO of Culture Add Labs. The email contained results of a quiz I took back in October of last year. The quiz was in regards to determining your culture add. A culture add is described as what you bring to a company that is different, but positively contributes to its culture. Danielle is more focused on what you can positively deliver to the world and how she can help you create a course that will allow you to utilize your add and empower others. Now I wish I can say that I was smart enough to put two and two together, I wasn’t. I thought it was interesting and screenshot the results. I screenshot everything. Even confirmation of payments when they say they are going to send me an email. LOL. It wasn’t until the next morning as I laid in my bed that the word Freedom popped up again. And then it clicked.

Thoughts started flooding my mind of the bigger concept of the word. It is the perfect theme for me!

Not just 2022, but to infinity and beyond. Yes, my nerd is showing.

I can’t stress enough how I just did not combine my thoughts and the concept of freedom. As the day went on, I thought about the love I want to give and how I want to be freely me. I want to be able to express my feelings, no holding back. Freely saying, I like you and being okay if the person doesn’t respond back in kind.

Being vulnerable in a way I have never been before. I want to love free of all hang ups, societal stereotypes and my own warped expectations.

I want to live freely. I want to travel this world and have new experiences. I don’t want to be tied down.

I don’t want a house with a foundation stuck in the ground. Through my transition and relocation, somehow the things that used to bring me happiness now only give me a momentary spark of joy. But when I get in my car and hit the expressway, a sense of peace settles over me. My spirit is lifted. That freedom of the open road still makes me happy and I feel free.

I listened to a webinar from Benjamin Hardy, author of Personality Isn’t Permanent, that day as well. I was on a role. In this webinar, he address the eight roadblocks to achieving our goals, becoming our future selves. I had 7 out of the 8 roadblocks, smh.

One roadblock was not knowing what you want. How

can you achieve an undetermined desire? You can’t! If you don’t know what you want, you are going to keep running around directionless, not knowing where to focus or use your energy. Well Benjamin, I know now! I can see clearly now the rain is gone. Okay, I am killing it with the movie and song lines, but not in a good way. LOL. I am not sure if this particular Benjamin Hardy webinar is available, but you can find other content that will help you discover your future self and gain more clarity on YouTube.

So what is it going to be? What do you really want?

I’m not talking about what you should want, think you should want, what others want for you. What do YOU want? What is your 2022 theme? Your life theme? Your mission to find your spark or happiness?

Don’t be like me and ignore what is right in your face.

Embrace what seems impossible, ridiculous even. It is your true desire. Take the culture add quiz. I’m not saying it will give you all the answers, but maybe it can set you on the path to discovering your hidden desires.

Sit down and write out the things that bring you joy and make it a point to do those things. As Adam Roa, poet and author says, “...yes and more please.” Please be aware that the things you have wanted in the past may not be what you want now. And that is okay.

What’s not okay, staying stuck and unhappy. Let’s not go another year living a life of unmet wants and needs.

There is a way out. Determine your direction and start picking your feet up and putting them down to get to your destination. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

VYD This month I wanted to write about something that is probably near and dear to a few couples out there. As we are all fully aware of, we are in a global pandemic. COVID -19 has had a hold over all of us for going on two years now. And while this is a very serious event, business closures and quarantine times have allowed some of us to connect in ways that we have not done so since before the invention of social media. We have all been forced to slow down a little and spend more time at home with our families and loved ones.

Recently my girlfriend (or partner/significant other whichever term you prefer) were recently diagnosed with COVID -19. Seems like many couples have been going through this. And like most people of the world, we had two totally different outlooks on how to tackle our problem. My lady is more of glass half empty type, while I am a more glass half full person. This was no surprise, because we usually are on two opposite ends of the spectrum on most subjects, and why should this be any different. Even right now as I am writing this, being forced to be in the same room with each other and having to cooperate about noise levels as I complete this passage is a small challenge. Even though quarantine

sucks ass, I believe that this experience has brought us closer. It’s something about having to go through something negative, that requires patience and understanding that makes people fall in love with each other all over again. To be honest it was a little eye opening. Things that I forgot about this beautiful woman were now right in front of me once again. Lying in bed, binging on old and new TV or preparing hot cups of tea and Theraflu has brought back a level of care that we have not seen since the early days.

And although I am not a doctor or scientist, nor would ever devalue anyone’s experience during this global event, I will say for us it allowed us to get an opportunity to get to know each other again and spend some true quality time.

What’s the lesson here? You would think it would be obvious. Don’t let a world changing event be the reason why you rediscover the things that make you special to each other, but if it does come to that make sure that you take just a little time and truly remember the beauty of being in love and appreciate the time that you have. Hope that this finds you all safe and in love with each other.

Two years ago, VIVYD Magazine was proud to present an interview with its own Editor in Chief Bobby Lee. This interview brought to light some of VIVYD’s earliest creations, the why behind VIVYD, as well giving a little insight in how the world of VIVYD came to existence. Today we are ecstatic to bring to you a follow up interview showcasing some of the magazine’s pitfalls, triumphs, and future projects. Let’s get started…

For anyone who does not know who you are, let’s get everyone on the same page. Tell us who you are.

By trade in the industry, I am a photographer. I have been taking pictures pretty much my whole life. It was when I was getting close to retirement from the Navy that I decided to make this my second career. So about 5 years ago, I invested a little time into becoming a better photographer, by taking some classes and really begin honing my craft.

There is still a lot to learn, but I can definitely see the improvements.

As a man, I am simple. I love the small things in life, as well as the small things that make us individuals. I would not say I am driven by success, but I don’t know how not to put my best effort into anything I do. I believe I owe it to myself to be the best version of myself at any role that I am in.

What is VIVYD Magazine?

At its core VIVYD Magazine is a collective belief. A belief that if you try and you are willing to put in the work then you can reach heights that you can only dream about. We represent the journey. Sure, there is a physical aspect that is the magazine, but we are so much more. Our team, although small is a group of professionals that are willing to go that extra mile for each other. We all aspire for more than what we are in the present and are willing to help each other achieve individual as well as community greatness.

How long has VIVYD magazine been around?

VIVYD Magazine is now entering its fourth year of existence. That’s right four years! There have been many ups and there have been many downs, but I believe anything worth having seldomly comes easy. It is my belief that you will appreciate your successes more when you go through adverse things, after all a smooth sea never defined a real Sailor.

Why did you create VIVYD? When the idea first came to mind for VIVYD, the thought process was to create a basic platform in which we could use to promote and encourage aspiring models, photographers,

and designers. I remembered how hard it was to be noticed when I first started, and I wanted to create a space to where others like me could be recognized and at the same time be empowered to be a better creative force.

What are some of the differences from issue number 1 as compared to issue number 35?

Oh wow!!! There are some significant differences in growth.

As some may know we started as a vanity magazine, which is a publication that focuses on mostly images rather than text. That was cool, because we got a chance to highlight more creatives, but that model is not sustainable for growth.

Today, we are three-pronged entity. We are an online platform, digital platform, as well as print by demand. With each one of those phases having shared and unique content.

The content is then all brought together by our social media channels which directs our patrons and followers to the individual segments in which they are looking for.

What were some of the early pitfalls when you started the magazine, what are some of today’s pitfalls?

The pitfalls have and continue to be everywhere. There are just some things that you cannot plan for, but I believe that our biggest early pitfall was getting the name out there.

Without a large marketing budget, a lot of who we were at the beginning was passed via word of mouth. Meaning that our growth was directly related to how many people were talking about us. This was accomplished through social media, which we all know is positive and negative. It was always important to ensure that we were being talked about.

Today, as a creator who always has ideas for expansion, I believe that the biggest pitfall is matching those ideas, to available capital, to available team members to help accomplish those goals. This combination is always a balancing act. Not to mention, over the course of time many people tend to come and go. Model turn over continues to be one of the biggest challenges, follow up closely with generating enough capital to bring your ideas to fruition.

What is the most asked question that you get as the Editor in Chief of VIVYD? This is probably the easiest question of all. The number one question has been and probably will always be, “How do I get on the cover of VIVYD?” This question is asked by individuals as least 5 to 10 times a week. As a creator, I wish I could put everyone on the cover, but as an editor how realistic is that. In 2022, our cover selection process will continue to be reviewed, revamped, and refined to ensure that we are getting the best cover available for that issue.

Where do you see VIVYD in five years?

In five years? It is my hope that in five years’ time that VIVYD is a common name with the state of Florida as well as with the southeastern region of the United States. We will continue to learn and grow and improve our product, all while helping as many creatives as we possibly can.

What have been some of the greatest highlights of VIVYD?

How do you think VIVYD Magazine empowers others?

To date, I think our biggest highlight will be something that has happened recently with an image that was captured during Miami Swimweek. This image has been shared and reshared and currently has over 20k total likes. While likes are not what we are always looking for, there is a collation between likes and getting the brand more notice.

I think that VIVYD empowers others in two ways. The first is by serving as an example that all you have to do is dream and then act on that dream in order to start moving forward.

Over the course of the last few years there have been other magazines that have followed in our footsteps, used a lot of our creatives to launch their own platforms. While some would think that this is negative, I counter by saying that is exactly what we want. We want everyone to win! The second, is that we aid in developing other original thinkers to gain confidence and build their resume, by working with us. We believe in opportunity and developing your craft and VIVYD Magazine does just that. Our mantra is BOLD, VIBRANT, YOU! Which means to be bold in your convictions and actions, be vibrant enough to shine and not be forgotten, but most importantly, be yourself. That is what we represent and try to encourage in others.

What makes VIVYD different from other publications?

I think the thing that makes us different is that if the quality is good, we are always willing to give the little guy or girl the opportunity to be noticed through our platform. In our area, we are the leading fashion/lifestyle magazine and set the pace for all others to see and try and emulate.

What is some of the newest content available with VIVYD? 2022 and 2023 promises to offer some of the best and most versatile content to date at VIVYD. We are looking to start releasing content in a very similar to way in which Marvel Studios conducts their releases. In this interview I am happy to announce that you are all witness to VIVYD Volume One. Volume One, is just the first of many groupings to where we will announce and promote new additions to the VIVYD Universe. The official Volume One announcement is expected to coincide with the release of the 2022 Anniversary issue so stay tuned for more details.

Is there in new content planned to be released from VIVYD in 2022?

Any parting words for anyone looking to start a magazine?

Or any other creative works?

Just to be real, some days it is downright tough to find the motivation to continue. Sometimes it seems like you are just stuck with no way out. But I am a firm believer that with enough time, you can think your way out of anything, no matter what the odds seem like. Be true to yourself! Do what makes your heart sing. If you choose to pursue your dreams, be willing to put in the work to achieve your goals.

Admittedly, every day is not filled with rainbows, but if it is something that you really want to achieve be dedicated enough to follow through and always be willing to bet on yourself to accomplish what you want.
