BRIXTON CAMPAIGN ON STOP AND SEARCH Brixton’s Champion Agency has launched a national campaign – #KnowOurRights – to help people be aware of their rights as fears grow of an increase in “stop and search” activity by police. The agency says that recent changes to stop and search laws – making it easier for police to carry them out at random without evidence or reasonable suspicion – means this is important for all people. Prime minister Boris John and home secretary Priti Patel recently extended stop and search powers under section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994. Known as “section 60 searches”, a stop and search can take place without reasonable suspicion if there is a belief that serious
violence will occur in a specified area, or that people are carrying offensive weapons. Police forces across England and Wales will soon be able to carry out searches in designated areas without authorisation from a senior officer. The current government is also planning to issue tasers to thousands more police officers. Champion says that research suggests that the use of stop and

search has a marginal impact on crime reduction, with any small benefits likely to be outweighed by negative impacts on police/community relations. The official Equality and Human Rights Commission has said that being unfairly targeted for stop and search affects the willingness of people to pass information to the police.
