Huge rise in demand for emergency foodbank supplies
A STRUGGLE TO SURVIVE Local people received emergency food supplies from the Brixton and Norwood foodbank nearly 8,000 times last year. That is more than 20 for every day of the year and 18% more than the amount supplied in 2015. The foodbank says the increase is due to people struggling with low wages (20%), delays in receiving benefits they are entitled and having no recourse to public funds (19%). While the scale of the problem is shocking, the local response is heartening.
