Brixton showed its best side as the holidays approached with a host of organisations and individuals aiming to make sure it really is a season of pace and goodwill locally. Lambeth mayor Christopher Wellbelove led the way at the Christmas tree lights ceremony outside Morleys. “Look after your neighbours,” was his message. And pupils from two Brixton schools joined in. Corpus Christi’s choir belted out traditional carols at the switching on of Brixton’s Christmas lights while Hill Mead children had the own switch-on as their creations shone out from the windows of The Department Store Music editor Dave Randall says it is striking just how many seasonal hits describe the loneliness that lurks just beyond the sleigh bells and mistletoe.
