BRIXTON SCHOOLS POLLUTION SHOCK By Anna McKie

Children in at least six Brixton primary schools are every day exposed to illegal levels of air pollution that risk causing lifelong health problems, an official report reveals. Commissioned by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, it identifies 802 educational institutions across London that are exposed to levels of nitrogen dioxide that breach European Union legal limits. Pupils as young as three breath polluted air that the government accepts is harmful to health. The research shows that a large number of Lambeth schools are exposed to more than 40 micro-

The pollution meter on Brixton Road grams per cubic metre (µg/m3) of air of nitrogen dioxide, the EU legal limit. They include: ●● Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School (44.5 µg/ m3) ●● St John’s Angell Town (43.3) ●● Sudbourne Primary (42.8) ●● Stockwell Primary School (42.6) ●● Hill Mead Primary School (40.7) ●● Christ Church Primary SW9 (40.4). College and Lambeth Academy in Clapham are also in areas that breach the limits. Mayor Khan said the figures were an outrage. “This is an environmental challenge, a public health challenge but also – and no one talks about this – it is fundamentally an issue of social justice. If you are a poor Londoner you are more likely to suffer from illegal air,” he said. A new poll for the Greater London Authority found that 88 per cent of Londoners think that air pollution is a big problem, with 66 per cent citing air quality as bad in their local area and 72 per cent calling on ministers to do more. Khan said: “The message to Government is crystal clear. Londoners want them to step up to the plate and take urgent action. “I’m doing everything in my power to tackle the shameful state of our air quality and boroughs are making real progress on local measures. However, without adequate support from government, Londoners will continue to be scared of the air they breathe. Now is the time for Government to step up and deliver a national vehicle scrappage fund and the new Clean Air Act we desperately need.” On 5 January, Brixton Road became the first street in the capital to reach the pollution limit for the whole year. Brixton has exceeded the legal limit for a whole year in January for the past three years. Lambeth council is considering charging more for parking permits for diesel vehicles than for others.
