EMCEE BIO
HandsOn is excited to welcome Michelle Kennedy as our emcee of this year’s awards. Michelle is a Meteorologist at WXII 12 News, Winston-Salem’s NBC Television affiliate, and was a founding board member of HandsOn NWNC. A native of Fayetteville, New York, Michelle joined the team in May 2001. Before coming to WXII12 News, she worked at WCCB in Charlotte.. Michelle holds a journalism degree from the University of Maryland at College Park, and completed the broadcast meteorology program at Mississippi State University. She is a member of the American Meteorological Society from whom she’s earned the distinction of Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and the AMS Television Seal of Approval. During her more than two decades at WXII 12 News, Michelle has enjoyed reporting on science and weather in North Carolina and Virginia. Beyond her professional interests, she enjoys camping, mountain biking, hiking, sailing, traveling, poetry and, most importantly, raising her two middle-school aged sons. She is grateful to serve on the Trellis Supportive Care Foundation Board and has previously served on the Arts Based School Board in Winston-Salem.

Carla Johnson – Animals
Carla’s unwavering dedication to animal welfare shines through her multifaceted volunteer efforts. As treasurer of Humane Solution Spay-Neuter Program, she orchestrated six successful vaccine clinics, including a special free clinic for veterans’ pets. Despite living two hours away, Carla still made sure she was present at each clinic, ensuring over 500 pets received vital care. In addition to her role with Humane Solution, she also volunteers with Chihuahua Rescue & Transport, rescuing and rehabilitating dogs from kill shelters, and often facilitating their journey to loving homes beyond NC. As a certified wildlife rehabber and former U.S. Marine, Carla's multifaceted dedication to animals is unparalleled.
Thomas Allred – Committee's Choice
For the past 15 years, Tom has dedicated thousands of hours helping to provide quality medical care to uninsured or underinsured patients at the Community Care Center. In his role as a Registered Nurse, Tom serves as a Patient Coordinator every Thursday at the clinic, ensuring smooth operations, supporting younger volunteers, and fostering a culture of excellence and compassion. Tom's meticulous attention to detail, from managing patient flow to administering care and improving training processes, significantly enhances the center's ability to deliver high-quality healthcare. His dedication and leadership make him an invaluable asset to the Community Care Center, enriching the lives of both staff and patients alike.
Allegacy Federal Credit Union – Corporate
Allegacy Federal Credit Union stands as a shining example of community engagement and corporate responsibility in Forsyth County, exemplifying the philosophy of "people helping people." Their dedication to serving extends far beyond financial transactions, as evidenced by their multifaceted approach to addressing community needs. From empowering students through financial literacy programs to combating food insecurity through “hands-on” volunteering, Allegacy works on multiple levels to support our community. Allegacy also works to promote a sense of belonging between neighbors, sponsoring various community-based cultural festivals and offering inclusive events like Community Tech Night. Through their engagement efforts, Allegacy Federal Credit Union consistently makes an impactful difference, solidifying its position as a vital community partner.
Kristina Ebbink – Cultural
Kristina Ebbink's dedication to preserving the arts through her volunteer work at The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem embodies the essence of the Cultural Category award. Since the 1990s, she has served as an unpaid volunteer coordinator, working to strengthen every aspect of the theatre's productions from auditions to volunteer assignments. Her ability to create a welcoming atmosphere during auditions has not only attracted aspiring actors but also ensured their comfort in what can be an intimidating environment. Moreover, Kristina's commitment extends beyond the stage, as she organizes the annual volunteer recognition event fostering a sense of community and appreciation among the Theatre’s diverse volunteer base. Her tireless efforts, totaling 1250 hours annually, have significantly contributed to the success of the theatre over the past three decades.
Paige Reilly – Director of Volunteers
Paige's dedication and tireless efforts as the Volunteer Coordinator for Senior Services’ Meals-on-Wheels program has ensured the delivery of over 230,000 meals to more than 1,000 older adults in the community since she joined the staff at the height of the pandemic in 2020. Paige excels in every aspect of professional volunteer management, from recruitment and training, to coordination and recognition. Paige's proactive approach to problem-solving and her commitment to building strong relationships with volunteers have significantly boosted retention and engagement rates. Her strategic approach has included revamping satisfaction surveys and implementing new communication strategies to further support volunteers’ efforts. Paige’s commitment to excellence has helped the program thrive in a post-COVID world.
Susan Peatross – Environmental
Susan Peatross exemplifies dedication to environmental stewardship through her multifaceted volunteer efforts. In her role at Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center, she assists in weekly classes, connecting with and supporting the students in their program. In addition, her artistic and creative decorations and flower arrangements make a huge impact at their annual Horse Show fundraiser each year. As a volunteer with the Garden Club Council of WSFC, Susan promotes environmental preservation and beautification to the wider community. But that’s not all! Susan also volunteers with Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful and Augsburg Lutheran Church. Through her diverse and widespread contributions, Susan embodies a holistic approach to environmental advocacy.
Jim Graham – Faith-Based
For over 18 years, Jim has invested countless hours into working to improve the lives of the unhoused. Initially drawn to Samaritan Ministries through his church, Jim's commitment deepened over time as he witnessed firsthand the transformative power of putting his faith into action. From participating in outreach programs to leading volunteer teams, Jim's impact extends beyond the kitchen sink; even if you’ll find him there washing pots and pans weekly, he embodies compassion and humility, often sharing meals and moments with guests. His consistent efforts reflect his belief in the mission of Samaritan Ministries and the inherent dignity of every individual.
The Little Engines That Could: The Morgan, Griffith, and Mills Families – Group/Team
For more than a decade, the Morgan, Griffith, and Mills families have tirelessly provided homemade dinners for SECU Family House’s guests, who arrive at the House because they have adult family members undergoing extended medical treatment at our local hospitals. Despite challenges like the pandemic and personal health struggles, this group of family volunteers has persisted in their service efforts, adapting their approach to continue their bi-monthly meal tradition. Their staunch dedication saw them organizing and cooking 1,200 individual homemade dinners for guests in 2023 alone, totaling 15,000 meals since 2011. Their continuing efforts provide comfort, nourishment, and a sense of home to families navigating some of the toughest times in their lives, providing inspiration and support to both guests and staff
Valerie George – Health & Human Services
Since 2005, Valarie has been a key volunteer at Crisis Control Ministry, serving to improve the lives of her neighbors. Beyond her role as a pharmacy tech assistant, Valerie's dedication shines through her efforts in training new volunteers and spearheading initiatives like the Wee Care Cereal Drive, which encourages preschool and early elementary school children to donate thousands of boxes of cereal to CCM's client-choice food pantry each year. Through her church, Valerie also supports initiatives like the Shalom Project's Flourish program. Her efforts exemplify a deep-seated devotion to helping people get through tough economic times in their lives.
Joann Goodson – Historically Underserved Populations
For over 40 years, Joann has inspired hope, love, and encouragement. As a volunteer for The Wells Center, she makes weekly visits to the women staying at the Forsyth Detention Center and The Well of Healing Residential Transitional Home to provide support and encouragement to these members of our community who are often overlooked. Joann’s integrity and passion make her a standout volunteer, ensuring that every woman she works with feels valued and supported on their journey toward a brighter future. Joann's selfless service, comforting presence, and exceptional dedication leave a profound and lasting impact on the lives of the women she touches.
Tanya Garanzuay – Individual
With an intense passion for giving back, Tanya has made a significant impact by providing support to the Hispanic/Latino residents of Forsyth County. Fluent in both Spanish and English, Tanya's linguistic skills have enabled her to effectively communicate and empathize with those she serves. Throughout 2023, she engaged in numerous different volunteer opportunities, including event setup for the Hispanic League's Annual Fiesta, acting as a commencement marshal at Forsyth Tech Community College’s graduation, coordinating outreach events for Eliza's Helping Hands, and serving as a volunteer spokesperson for ABC of NC. Juggling these volunteer commitments on top of college, parenthood, and a part-time job, Tanya has maintained a remarkable academic record that placed her on the President’s List. Through her dedication to working with underserved communities, Tanya serves as an inspiring role model for others.
Thao Sommerville – Lifetime Achievement
Thao’s dedication to the Lewisville and Clemmons communities makes her more than deserving of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Volunteering with the Clemmons Civic Club, Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, Triad Minority & Business Expo Advisory Council, Jerry Long YMCA, among many other organizations, Thao demonstrates her deep commitment to closely working with her neighbors. Thao's service spans working to preserve Vietnamese culture to empowering women and aiding small businesses; she infuses each of these endeavors with creativity, dedication, and genuine care. Thao's numerous recognitions, including Rotarian of the Year and Community Service Volunteer of the Year, highlight her exemplary contributions. Through her generosity and infectious warmth, Thao embodies civic responsibility, leaving an unforgettable mark.
Judy McAllister – Senior Volunteer
Since 2011, Judy has contributed significantly to ensuring that SECU Family House meets its mission to provide affordable lodging and support services for adult patients and caregivers seeking medical treatment in Winston-Salem. Her attention to detail and organizational prowess ensure that the Family House operates seamlessly, from maintaining the kitchen to organizing donations efficiently. Judy's warm hospitality and compassionate nature create a welcoming environment for guests, making them feel loved and at home during their stay. Additionally, her role as a community ambassador has significantly contributed to the Family House's outreach and support network, allowing the Family House to spread its message and increase its impact.
KeKe Robinson – Service to Seniors
At Salemtowne Retirement Community, KeKe works to increase the quality of life for their senior residents by organizing events and addressing their other needs with compassion Providing more than 1,560 volunteer hours annually, KeKe shares her exceptional skills in communication, creativity, and teamwork with the staff and residents at Salemtowne. This not only alleviates the stress that often comes with planning and executing succesful events, but also fosters a culture of support and community. KeKe's commitment has significantly improved the lives of both residents and staff at Salemtowne.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority – Service to Youth
With an annual commitment of over 400 hours to community service, the members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.Alpha Mu Sigma Alumnae Chapter have made a significant impact on various causes, including institutions like Hope of Winston Salem and the Ken Carlson Boys and Girls Club. Notable efforts include their participation in programs such as the March of Dimes and the Adopt a Highway initiative. Their annual Youth Symposium at the Ken Carlson Boys and Girls Club addresses pressing issues affecting young people, showcasing an ongoing commitment to nurturing and empowering the next generation. Their consistent selflessness and untiring dedication are a testament to the positive impact they have on the lives of young people.
Max Chen – Youth Volunteers
Since he first visited Kaleideum at the age of 2, Max Chen has been sharing his passion for science. In 2021, as a high school freshman, Max sought out opportunities to give back, finding a natural fit at Kaleideum where he served as an assistant summer camp counselor. His commitment deepened in 2023 when he expanded his volunteer role to include working closely with Kaleideum's Exhibits and Collections Manager, leveraging his expertise in database management. Max's versatility and excellence in various roles contribute to fostering scientific education and engagement with other young people, as well as adults, across Winston-Salem and the wider community.
