SUMMER 2018

Rachel and Ethan Thomas’ Wonderful Wedding Donation Rachel and Ethan had a beautiful wedding ceremony last summer in Crickhowell, South Wales.

Last year, Rachel sadly lost her grandfather. In his memory, the couple held an auction at the wedding of wildlife canvases painted by Rachel’s cousin, Beth. They raised £130 which they very generously donated to Joint Action. The couple are now proud parents of a baby girl. We would like to wish Rachel and Ethan a warm congratulations and also a massive thank you for their kindness.

David Hanson’s Donations through Bike Hire and Good Vibrations This Spring, David Hanson raised an impressive amount of £725 for the Joint Action 2018 Spring Appeal. Through his innovative and enterprising business strategies, David extended his benevolent support for the future of Trauma and Orthopaedic research.

Balvenie Bike Hire is a service provided by Collectors’ Cabin, David’s shop close to the iconic clock tower at the heart of Dufftown, the ‘malt whisky capital’ of the world. The service enables visitors to explore the area on cycles. Money raised from the bike hires has been one of the novel ways that David has raised money for Joint Action. Good Vibrations, also located in Collectors’ Cabin, provides a relaxation experience, where visitors can take a little ‘time out’ from a busy life, and enjoy the comforting warmth of hot stones and the soothing vibrations of singing bowls. This is another service through which David has collected funds for research that finds ways to improve current methods of rehabilitation. You can visit both these interesting services on the websites here: collectorscabin.vpweb.co.uk and goodvibrations.vistaprintdigital.com and learn all about David’s Collectors’ Cabin shop in Dufftown.

A huge thanks to David for his support!

How Your Donations Help Your donations support the BOA Orthopaedic Surgery Research Centre (BOSRC), based at York Trials Unit, which works with the BOA in expanding the number of trials in the UK related to Trauma and Orthopaedics. Over the past year, four new studies have secured over £4.5million in funding for trauma and orthopaedic research following successful grant applications and are now underway.

ACTIVE study is investigating • Tthehebest type of surgery for treating

a pilon fracture, a particularly severe break of the shin bone where it forms the ankle joint.

PRESTO study is investigating • Tthehebenefits and risks of surgery

for a stable thoracolumbar spine fracture (a break of the spine in the mid to lower back) compared to the non-surgical option of using a brace to stabilise the spine.

ROFHER 2 is investigating the • Pmost effective treatment option

for serious and complex fractures of the upper part of the arm at the

02

shoulder (proximal humerus) in people 65 years and older. The treatments being investigated are reverse shoulder arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty and non-surgical treatment (allowing the arm to heal naturally whilst in a sling).

QIST project is investigating • Tahequality improvement initiative

for detecting and treating anaemia and MSSA (methicillin-sensitive staphylococcus aureus) before patients undergo hip or knee replacement surgery with the aim of improving patient outcomes.

Further grant applications for future research projects are also under development. Your generous donations are helping us to advance Trauma and Orthopaedic research.

Thank you very much!
