Transition Information Year 6 to Year 7

Information for parents - 2022-2023 Moving to the Senior School...

While there are many similar routines between the Junior and Senior Schools, differences do exist. For your information we have outlined some key features about this transition below:

Induction visits

Pupils from Year 6 join us for induction visits in June when current Year 7 pupils introduce Year 6 to Senior School life.

Additionally, before the start of term, parents and pupils are invited to join us for an induction afternoon. Pupils will have the opportunity to meet their tutors and the Head of Year 7 will give a presentation providing practical information for parents.

Deciding on tutor groups

We take advice from Junior School (JS) staff and ask the children to name four friends they would like to have in their class. Our aim is to make sure they will be with at least one of their choices. Each tutor group will include newcomers as well as pupils transferring from the Junior School and each pupil is assigned a tutor. The tutors and pupils in the Year group are managed by a Head of Year. Our pupil population changes quite frequently and children do move away at short notice so please be aware choices made in Year 6 might not be possible.

Support needs

Junior School staff make sure the Senior School has all the relevant information for as smooth a transfer as possible but particularly for those who require some support. Both the Senior School’s Learning Support (LS) and English as an Additional Language (EAL) departments are ready to welcome new pupils who need general support in literacy, numeracy or those with a specific learning need.

Our school day

The Senior School day begins at 8:50am. Pupils are allowed on site from 8:20am. Registration with the tutor is between 8:50 and 9am. Lessons begin at 9am. There is a 20 minute break at 11am. Staff and pupils share lunch together in the refectory and lessons finish at 4pm.

Information for parents - 2022-2023 Contact with school

We welcome all contact with school. However, parents are requested not to come on site unless they have a prior appointment - please send an email to: ssc@britishschool.fr or telephone the school office on: 01 34 80 45 94 with any query including those for specific teachers or to make an appointment. The office staff will make sure the relevant person receives your email and replies in a timely fashion.

The KS3 curriculum, our teaching timetable

In Year 7 most subjects - Science, History, Geography, Music, PE and PSHE are taught in tutor groups. The whole year group is together for Sport.

French, English, Maths, Technology, Art and Computing are divided into 4 groups. French and Maths are divided into sets. Sets are usually determined by ability using information supplied by the Junior School. Sets are regularly reviewed and movement between sets is possible when appropriate. One of the French groups is dedicated to native or near native speakers. This group will explore literary texts studied in similar age groups in French schools.

These pupils will take their GCSE examinations in Year 10 and start A Level preparation in Year 11.

We offer experience of another Foreign Language in Year 7. All pupils study Spanish and German before making a choice in Year 8. If your child is already fluent in one of these we will seek a different language experience.

Alternatively, this time will be used to provide numeracy or literacy support.

Homework

We have a homework timetable which allows for 20 mins per subject each night (as a guideline) and lists the subjects which will have homework for each evening; usually three subjects. Information for parents - 2022-2023 Assessment and reporting

We have 5 assessment periods during the school year and 2 parents’ evenings.

However, specific concerns can be addressed by contacting the Senior School office at any time. Assessment for Learning, that is to say sharing specific advice for how to improve with pupils is important for us. In Year 7 pupils have a learning log which aims to explain to them, and you, what is expected for each level of attainment. Activities and trips

For information about all activities and school trips please contact the activities assistant by email at: activities.ssc@britishschool.fr or telephone: 01 78 64 70 01.

Activities can vary year to year but currently include: Astronomy, Nordic Walking, Orchestra, Puzzle Club, Science Club, Gardening Club, LAMDA, Ethics in Science and Medicine, Creative Writing, Maths Competition Training, Chess Club, Crochet Club, Drama Club, Netball, Boys’ Football, Rugby, Girls’ Football, Fitness, Cricket, Junk Kouture, Print Club, Robotics Club, Jazz Band... The Music Department organises individual instrument/voice tuition. Details will be available at the beginning of the school year.

Lockers

Pupils move around the site to go from lesson to lesson. To make sure they are not carrying heavy bags all day each pupil will have his/her own locker. To secure the locker you will need to provide a padlock. Pupils are also asked to store any items of value in the locker during the course of the day. iPads should be left in lockers when not in use. Although this is a safe environment, items of value do go missing. Money and valuables should be left at home.
