Admissions Documentation
November 2020 Dear Parents Moving on from Marymount is a significant step in your child’s educational journey. We understand the nurturing environment that they are leaving and we know that transition to The British School of Paris is one that allows young people to build on all that they have learned so far and to go on to still greater achievements. We are proud of the achievements made by Marymount alumni who have joined us at the British School. Your interest in The British School of Paris is appreciated. We provide a British Independent School education that combines excellence in teaching, a highly personal approach, a technology enriched learning environment with many opportunities for cultural and sporting activities. Our community of happy, confident students and supportive, well qualified staff provides an enriching environment in which young people thrive and succeed. British qualifications are respected the world over and are a passport into quality universities world-wide. We currently have students studying at world famous universities including Oxford and Cambridge, UCL and Imperial College in London. Others choose to continue their studies in the USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa, while others stay closer to home choosing French, Dutch, Belgian or Spanish universities. I have pleasure in enclosing documentation on the British School of Paris which should give you the detail you need at this stage, though please do get in touch with our Admissions Office at registrar@britishschool.fr or by telephoning (+33) (0)1 34 80 45 96 should you require further information. We deal with all applications on an individual basis, offering places only where we are able to fully support the needs of the student. We are proudly non-selective but have the highest aspirations for all of our pupils. The application process is outlined on the school website www.britishschool.fr The atmosphere at the BSP is vibrant, creative and above all outward looking. We are much more than a school, we are at the centre of the international community we serve and take great pride in making interaction with the school a happy and fulfilling experience for the whole family. I hope that the enclosed information will go some way towards giving you a flavour of how we achieve this. However, the best way to appreciate the BSP is to come and sample it for yourself. From guided tours to taster days, we are always ready to give prospective pupils and their families a sense of what it is like to be a part of this extraordinary community. Our campus on the banks of the Seine is a truly inspiring place to study but our reach is global, studying here means that you are part of an active and influential alumni community spread around the globe. The British School of Paris retains a special place in the hearts of all those who have studied and taught here over the past sixty five years; I very much hope that you and your family will join us in the future. We are proud of our past, but our focus is on the future of our students. I look forward to meeting you. Yours sincerely
Nicholas Hammond

The National Curriculum of England and Wales Uniquely in France, The British School of Paris follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales and the Early Years Foundation Stage programmes of study, modified where necessary to allow for our particular position as an international school in France, providing a broad and rigorous programme for our international student body. It offers a balanced coverage of the humanities, arts, technologies and sciences, expressive arts and physical education, ensuring that pupils develop a wide range of skills and techniques. In the National Curriculum, the years of compulsory education are divided as follows: Early Years Foundation Stage Key Stage 1 Key Stage 2 Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4 Advanced Level Curriculum
Pupils aged 3-5 pupils aged 5-7 pupils aged 7-11 pupils aged 11-14 pupils aged 14-16 pupils aged 16-18
Nursery/Reception Years 1-2 Years 3-6 Years 7-9 Years 10-11 Years 12-13
Junior School Foundation Stage (Age 3-5, Nursery & Reception) At this stage the curriculum is organised into six ‘Areas of Learning’: Personal Social and Emotional Development, Communication Language and Literacy, Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the world, Physical Development, and Creative Development. Key Stages 1 and 2 (Age 5-11, Years 1-6) At Key Stage 1 and 2 the ‘Core Subjects’ comprise English, Mathematics and Science. Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, French, Music and Physical Education make up the other ‘Foundation Subjects’. French, Music and Physical Education are taught by specialist teachers throughout the school. The other subjects are taught by each child’s class teacher, who also delivers our Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme.
Senior School Key Stage 3 Curriculum (Age 11-14, Years 7-9) The Key Stage 3 curriculum guides each child’s learning in the first three years of secondary school education. A wide range of subjects is taught to allow pupils to develop a broad spectrum of skills and knowledge before making the choice to continue with specific subjects in a more focussed way as they proceed in their school career. Key Stage 4 GCSE Curriculum (Age 14-16, Years 10-11) Key Stage 4 offers a broad, diverse and stimulating curriculum that culminates in achieving General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) qualifications. GCSEs provide a deeper and more challenging approach to the subjects studied. Pupils study the core subjects Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, French and the Sciences supplemented by specific subject choices as well as PSHE and PE. GCSEs offer an ideal preparation for the courses available in years 12 and 13. Advanced level Curriculum (Age 16-18, Years 12-13) At The British School of Paris a large variety of subjects is offered to Advanced Level in years 12 and 13 - the Sixth Form. We actively review our academic programmes to ensure our students’ needs are being met. The Sixth Form welcomes students from all academic backgrounds who are committed, self-motivated, have a sense of purpose and a determination to succeed. Students are offered the opportunity to maximise their potential academically, socially and personally. Self discipline and personal responsibility for learning are encouraged. Following examination success students gain admission to a large range of universities both in the United Kingdom and worldwide.
