English is not my first language Information for families whose children do not have English as their mother tongue, or who have not been educated in an English speaking environment.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) at the Junior School • In the Junior School, we offer a personalised English programme which pupils follow whilst also continuing their mainstream education in the school.

• Our EAL programme emphasises all four language skills, namely: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

• Depending on the level of English already acquired, our EAL programme

is offered for either two hours or five hours per week. It is developed in conjunction with class teachers to ensure that pupils become fully integrated into the main curriculum as soon as possible.

• Each child who may need EAL is assessed before starting at the school, and continual assessment takes place for the duration of the programme.

• The EAL programme in the Junior School is charged in addition to normal tuition fees.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) & Intensive English (IE) at the Senior School EAL Years 7–11 (Age 11-16)

• In the Senior School, EAL is offered to students needing extra support in Years 7-11.

• These EAL classes are regular options within the normal curriculum for those who qualify and therefore do not incur an additional charge. There is also the possibility of taking a GCSE in EAL.

• Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 receive one and a half hours of EAL per week.

• Students in Years 10 and 11 receive two and a half hours per week.

• All students study French as a foreign language, whether or not they are receiving EAL support.

EAL Years 12 and 13 (Age 16-18)

• Where students in Years 12 and 13 require EAL, they can join a small group

of up to six students for up to six hours per week, depending on their needs.

• One-to-one tuition can also be arranged.

• These classes carry an additional charge.

Intensive English (IE) Years 7-9 (Age 11-14)

• Where there is a need for considerable English teaching, we offer an

Intensive English (IE) programme in Years 7, 8 and 9. Pupils will be in the programme for just over half their lessons per week. For the remainder of the time they are with their year group.

• IE pupils do not attend mainstream English, History, Geography or Science,

although aspects of these subjects are taught within IE lessons. They will be with their peers for Mathematics, Art, Computer Science, French, Design and Technology, PE and Sport. They also attend PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) classes with their tutor group.

• A progress report is produced regularly and written targets are provided.

• Intensive English is charged as an all-inclusive fee, rather than as a fee in addition to regular tuition fees.
