Leadership in the world today

Colegio Peruano Británico in its 56 years of existence, views educational leadership as the persistent vocation and action based on its principles, knowledge and skills for the educational instruction of children and young students who have been entrusted to us by their parents. Scientific, culture, sports, technological and humanistic education and training in all educational and formative processes is based on the practice of ethics, humanism, fairness and justice for the fulfillment of vision in our institutional mission.

We affirm our educational leadership because we have the institutional capacities of authority, motivation, communication and the significant training of teaching staff, to encourage teamwork, aimed at the development of quality pedagogical activities, with the main objective of the search for excellence in the teaching performance of our day-to-day tasks.

This educational leadership in the world today has been recognized by the most important private universities, which highlight the academic excellence and training achieved by young graduates of Colegio Peruano Británico. This year, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru and the Universidad del Pacifico have granted us the distinction of Academic Excellence 2019, in honour of the quality achieved by our students during their school life and in their later performance as university students.

Based on the ideas presented in this digital magazine we are creating an important space to be shared with the educational community and thus show the fulfillment of our vision and mission. You can find in it various approaches to our students’ success in the fields of knowledge, culture, art, sports and social responsibility programmes, which our young people develop, committed to their environment and aimed at boys, girls and the elderly in charitable and health institutions, which demonstrates the human and integral formation of our graduates.

Our first digital magazine is dedicated to all the people who are part of our educational community and who make Colegio Peruano Británico a successful reality.

El Colegio Peruano Británico, en sus 56 años de existencia, concibe el liderazgo educativo como la persistente vocación y acción basados en sus principios, conocimientos y habilidades para la dirección formativa de los niños, niñas y jóvenes estudiantes que nos han sido confiados por sus padres. La educación y formación científica, cultural, deportiva, tecnológica y humanista en todos los procesos pedagógicos y formativos se fundamenta en la práctica de la ética, el humanismo, la equidad y la justicia para el cumplimiento de su visión y misión institucional.

FERIA VOCACIONAL EVOCA 2019

EVOCA 2019 Vocational Fair

On Friday, 17th May our department of psychopedagogy organized the 2019 vocational fair for the students of Baccalaureate and Form III, who will soon be choosing their professional careers.

El viernes 17 de mayo, nuestro departamento de psicopedagogía organizó la feria vocacional 2019 para los alumnos del Bachillerato y Form III, quienes están prontos a elegir su carrera profesional.

ur school’s main auditorium gathered representatives from nineteen universities, among which were Peruvian and foreign entities, for the EVOCA 2019 Vocational Fair, an activity in which students enquire and investigate about the professional careers they are interested in, as well as the superior education entities that offer them. Among the universities of our country, the Peruano Británico received the Universidad de Lima, the Universidad del Pacifico, the Universidad Cayetano Heredia, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, among others.On the other hand, other universities and foreign Institutes also participated in the fair, such as the Centro Tecnológico de Monterrey, the Euro Business School and IE University of Spain.

l auditorio principal de nuestro colegio recibió a representantes de diecinueve universidades, entre peruanas y extranjeras, para el inicio de la Feria Vocacional EVOCA 2019. Una actividad en la que los alumnos indagan e investigan sobre las carreras profesionales de su interés y los centros de educación superior que las brindan.

Entre algunas de las universidades de nuestro país, el Peruano Británico recibió a la Universidad de Lima, la Universidad del Pacífico, la Universidad Cayetano Heredia, la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, entre otras. De otro lado, también formaron parte de la feria universidades e institutos extranjeros, como el Centro Tecnológico de Monterrey, Europe Business School y IE University de España.

After this, it must be known that all the challenges that we are presented with must be faced happily and with gratitude towards life”, he stated.

En su discurso, también resaltó la necesaria presencia que los padres de familia tienen en esta etapa y los instó a que se comuniquen y conversen con sus hijos, debido a las «tensiones, inquietudes y exigencias que conlleva esta decisión».

Luego el psicólogo José Víctor Garrido, dictó una charla titulada Habilidades esenciales para la vida. Él empezó con una dinámica para que los jóvenes despierten su instinto de pensar y reflexionar en relación con las metas que tienen en su mente. «Lo importante para su proyecto de vida es saber dónde no se ven [a sí mismos]; esa es una información valiosa para alinear sus proyectos y metas. Después de eso hay que saber que todos los retos que se nos presenten hay que enfrentarlos alegres y con gratitud hacia la vida», señaló.

A PROFESSIONAL FROM SCHOOL Un profesional desde el colegio Nicola Novaro is an IB Two student who, at his early 17 years, has already edited a sports magazine. The opportunity came to him thanks to an aunt of his, who trusted in his talent and discipline for such an important endeavor: “I drafted all the magazine on my own. I learnt to manage my times, to write better, to edit the texts and organize myself. Thanks to this work that I carried out in summer, I realized that I want to study sports journalism after finishing school and if it is in Argentina, that would be great!“.

Nicola Novaro es un alumno de IB Two que, a sus cortos 17 años, ya ha editado una revista deportiva.

La oportunidad llegó gracias a una tía suya, quien confió en su talento y disciplina para tan importante labor: «Yo redacté solo toda la revista. Aprendí a manejar mis tiempos, a escribir mejor, a editar los textos y organizarme. Gracias a ese trabajo que realicé en verano me di cuenta de que quiero estudiar periodismo deportivo luego de finalizar el colegio y si es en Argentina ¡que bien!», señaló.

Marché français

L

Le coordinateur du département de français, Alain Arries, a parlé de l’objectif d’inculquer l’apprentissage et la compréhension de la culture française chez nos étudiants.

Alain Arries, the co-ordinator of the French Department, spoke about the goal of imparting knowledge and understanding of the French culture to our students.

e français pour moi, est une langue basée sur la réflexion qui cherche à comprendre le pourquoi des choses qui nous entourent”, indique Alain pendant qu’il observe attentivement les étudiants de secondaires qui se préparent en colonne, prêts pour entrer dans ce petit monde français que nous avons proposé au collège Péruvien Britannique depuis trois ans. Le marché français est une activité dans laquelle les élèves ont l’opportunité de connaître plus en profondeur la civilisation française à travers des jeux comme le quiz ou la pétanque. Une activité en plein air, avec des stands de jeu qui leur permettent de mettre à l’épreuve toutes leurs connaissances sur cette culture. “Le marché français t’aide à comprendre que, dans le futur, cette langue peut-être un outil pour la vie académique et professionnelle”, explique le coordinateur.

The French Market is an activity that offers the students the opportunity to learn more about the French civilization through games such as the quiz or twister, an outdoor activity, with stands of games that allow them to test their knowledge of this culture.

“The French Market helps you understand that, in the near future, language may become a tool for your academic and professional life,” explained the coordinator.

En France, c’est une tradition d’avoir des activités extracurriculaires pendant la période scolaire, c’est ainsi que, quand Alain est arrivé il y a trois dans notre collège, nous avons décidé grâce à l’aide de toute l’équipe de français, de nous engager et de motiver les élèves dans le but de les connecter à cette culture. “La réponse des étudiants à cette activité a été pour nous tous une source de motivation car cela suscite un engouement et ils adorent par exemple, participer au quiz culturel.

Sans aucun doute, un événement qui favorise les différentes manières d’enseigner, sans oublié l’union entre les professeurs et les étudiants du “Bachilerato international” qui nous aident bénévolement dans l’organisation du marché français.

very two weeks, the primary and secondary school students have the opportunity of showing their creativity to the rest of their schoolmates. In the school coliseum, we become spectators of shows and different types of presentations in which the students – putting into practice the values previously worked on with the tutors – give their schoolmates food for thought with the aim of putting into practice the work carried out during the month.

ada dos semanas, los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria tienen la oportunidad de mostrar su creatividad ante el resto de compañeros de este nivel. En el coliseo del colegio, nos volvemos espectadores de actuaciones y diversos tipos de presentaciones en las que —poniendo en práctica los valores que previamente se trabajan con los tutores— los alumnos llevan a reflexionar a sus compañeros y compañeras con el objetivo de poner en práctica lo trabajado en el mes.

VALORES DIPLOMÁTICOS // Simon Lightman, coordinador del grupo de debate MUN del Colegio Peruano Británico y profesor de humanidades, conversa sobre el éxito que el grupo está teniendo desde su conformación y sobre la pasión que los alumnos sienten por esta actividad.

Simon Lightman, the coordinator of the MUN (Model United Nations) debate group of Colegio Peruano Británico and a humanities teacher, talked about the success of the group since its creation and about the passion that the students feel for this activity.

undreds of students around the world gathered in a MUN conference room. They are all ready to begin the activity and discuss political, social, or environmental issues included in the global agenda. Confident in their public speaking abilities, the students prepare their best arguments. This is the United Nations Model (MUN), a drill in which the students take on the role of a diplomat of a designated country and make up a committee of sorts. “The MUN team is composed of students ranging from Form I all the way up to the IB students, and it’s a programme led by them,” Mr. Lightman told us.

Previously, every Wednesday afternoon in our school the debate group would meet to coordinate its future events. “The team has had a successful year, due to their effort and growth, following their participation in our first international conference: the Yale Model United Nations,” remarked Simon. In this debate, the Colegio Peruano Británico delegation returned with five awards, one of them for the best delegate.

“It was a resounding success,“ Mr. Lightman said alongside a group of students who had accompanied him since the start of this project.

The educator believes that the presence of the school team motivates the students to discover skills that they perhaps did not believe were important. “The MUN allows them to develop intellectual skills, in terms of international and political analysis, such as research and debate, in order to reach a mutual consensus. However, the larger picture and ultimate lesson is the development of passion.”

ientos de alumnos de todo el mundo reunidos en una sala de conferencias MUN. Todos están listos para comenzar la actividad y debatir sobre los temas políticos, sociales o medioambientales que están en la agenda global. Confiados en sus técnicas de oratoria, los estudiantes preparan sus mejores argumentos. Así es el Modelo de Naciones Unidas (MUN), un simulacro en el que los alumnos toman el papel de un diplomático de un país designado y hacen la simulación de un comité. «El equipo MUN va desde primer grado hasta los alumnos del IB y es un programa liderado por ellos mismos», nos dice Mr. Lightman.

Previamente todos los miércoles por la tarde en nuestro colegio, el grupo de debate se reúne para coordinar las próximas participaciones. «Debido al esfuerzo y crecimiento, el equipo ha tenido un año exitoso, participando en nuestra primera conferencia internacional: el Yale Model United Nations», comenta Simon. En ese debate, la delegación del Colegio Peruano Británico regresó con cinco premios, uno de ellos al mejor delegado. «Fue un éxito rotundo», termina Mr. Lightman al lado de un grupo de alumnos que lo acompañan, desde el inicio, en este proyecto.

El educador considera que la presencia del equipo del colegio motiva a los alumnos a descubrir habilidades que tal vez no consideraban importantes. «El MUN permite desarrollar capacidades intelectuales sobre análisis político e internacional, como la investigación y el debate, para llegar a un acuerdo mutuo. Sin embargo, la gran lección es la de desarrollar la pasión».

“We have seen students committed to topics on politics, human rights or economics. Ultimately, the MUN is useful for the students to understand that they are promoters of change in society and that they have the power to support their country in this way.”

Mr. Lightman se siente orgulloso cuando escucha que los alumnos de su equipo escogen la carrera de ciencias políticas o de diplomacia como el camino profesional. «Hemos visto alumnos comprometidos con temas sobre política, derechos humanos o economía. Al final el MUN sirve para que entiendan que son actores de cambio en la sociedad y que tienen el poder de apoyar así a su país».

OUTSTANDING STUDENTS AT THE MUN Valeria Valega is one of the students who, for the past three years, has formed part of the MUN and who, little by little, has gradually accumulated a number of awards. Her passion for this activity has led her to be inclined towards the international relations degree program.

“I have always been interested in the problems of other countries and different cultures,” she said. Valeria has the goal of being accepted into the Javier Perez de Cuellar Diplomatic Academy of Peru, as well as of participating — why not? — in a UN meeting.

Vanessa Lozano has also participated in the MUN. She began debating by herself, but in the first conference she realised that she preferred to debate the use of firearms with a partner. “I would tell my schoolmates not to fear joining the team and that they are going to understand what is happening in our society with these debates. The MUN has opened doors for me and has made me view the world differently,” she confessed.

ESTUDIANTES DESTACADOS EN EL MUN Valeria Valega es una de las alumnas que, desde hace tres años, forma parte del MUN y que, poco a poco, ha ido acumulando premios. Su pasión por esta actividad la ha llevado a inclinarse por la carrera profesional de relaciones internacionales. «Siempre me he interesado por los problemas de otros países y las diferentes culturas», cuenta.

Valeria tiene como objetivo ingresar a la Academia Diplomática del Perú Javier Pérez de Cuéllar y, por qué no, participar en un encuentro en la ONU. Vanessa Lozano también ha participado en el MUN. Ella empezó debatiendo sola; pero, en la primera conferencia, se dio cuenta de que prefería debatir en pareja sobre el tema del uso de las armas. «Yo les diría a mis compañeros que no teman ingresar al equipo, que van a entender lo que pasa en nuestra sociedad con estos debates. El MUN me ha abierto puertas y me ha hecho ver el mundo de manera diferente», confiesa.

Nicole Vásquez (aged 13): “This is the first time that I did the work of someone in the press and I won. In this area we have to obtain information about all of the committees and write an article within two hours, according to your priorities as a means of communication. We have to be well acquainted with each subject, follow the policies of our newspaper, take into account the images and interviews you provide” (Representative of the press in the China Daily. Outstanding recognition in the Cambridge MUN).

Letizia Echevarría (13 años) En el MUN, por más que se trabaje por equipos, por momentos es un evento muy individual, porque a cada uno le toca representar a su país y debatir su posición en un minuto. Este fue mi cuarto MUN. Nunca espero ganar algo; solo dar lo mejor y que se den los frutos.

Antes iba para divertirme, pero acá encontré mi pasión por debatir».

Nicole Vásquez (13 años): «Esta es la primera vez que hago prensa y gané. En esta área hay que informarse sobre todos los comités y armar un artículo en dos horas de acuerdo a tus prioridades como medio de comunicación. Hay que saber bien cada tema, cuidar la política de tu periódico, tener en cuenta las imágenes y las entrevistas que haces» (Representante de prensa en el China Daily; reconocimiento outstanding en el MUN Cambridge).

Abigail Mamani (aged 16): “I started out rather shy and bashful, with a lot of fear of making a mistake. At present, I have participated on twenty occasions in the MUN and have received six awards as the best delegate. Over the past year, I focused a lot on the press committee; however, I made an exception for the MUN in the Newton School and I enrolled in an economic and futuristic committee.

It was a challenge since it was a totally new area for me.” (Representative of the United States in the United Nations Financial System; best delegate in the Newton MUN).

Abigail Mamani (16 años): «Comencé bastante tímida, con mucho miedo a equivocarme. Ahora ya llevo veinte apariciones en el MUN y seis premios a mejor delegada. En el último año, me enfoqué bastante en el comité de prensa; sin embargo, hice una excepción para el MUN en el Newton y fui a un comité económico y futurístico. Fue un reto, pues era un área totalmente nueva para mí».

Authorized voice Achievements and challenges of our Student Council.

VOZ AUTORIZADA // Logros y desafíos de nuestro consejo estudiantil.

T

he Student Council was created in response to the needs of the alumni, whose eight members represent them proportionally.

In addition, it is part of the leadership and entrepreneurship training promoted among its students throughout their time at school.

Andrea Guaylupo, Santiago Soto, Valeria Valega, Andrés Obludzyner, Valeria Ríos, Akshay Punjabi, Vanessa Lozano and Rodrigo Castro work together with the prefects and house captains to make sure the students ‘ideas are heard and included in the activities they organise as the Student Council. For this reason, they try to make unbiased decisions that address different viewpoints. For them, clear and effective communication is of utmost importance.

Upon assuming the responsibility of being part of the Council, they defined their main goal as being innovative in order to improve the experience of the high school student, since in their role they do not represent their house but rather all of the students. “We want to innovate and prove that we can take on the responsibility of listening to the students and for the activities to meet their objectives,” remarked Andrea Guaylupo.

During the first half of the year, changes were made to Friday’s activities, in which the games of dodgeball and “sing and win “ were included which were enjoyed by their classmates. Additionally, they led the Mother’s Day and Teacher’s Day assemblies and incorporated new activities, such as poems, card games and a rap.

Presently, the Council is preparing the activities of the second half of the year, a stage in which they shall be committed to the organisation of the Challenge Fest, the House Festival and the House Party.

l Consejo Estudiantil surge como respuesta a las necesidades del alumnado, cuyos ocho miembros lo representan de manera proporcional. Además, es parte de la formación en liderazgo y emprendimiento que la institución promueve entre sus estudiantes a lo largo de su vida escolar.

Andrea Guaylupo, Santiago Soto, Valeria Valega, Andrés Obludzyner, Valeria Ríos, Akshay Punjabi, Vanessa Lozano y Rodrigo Castro trabajan conjuntamente con los prefects y house captains para garantizar que sus ideas sean escuchadas y puedan incluirse en las actividades que realizan como consejo estudiantil.

Por ello, procuran tomar decisiones equilibradas que contemplen diferentes puntos de vista. La comunicación clara y eficaz es de suma importancia para ellos.

Al asumir la responsabilidad de ser parte del consejo, definieron como su principal objetivo el innovar para mejorar la experiencia de los alumnos de secundaria, pues en su rol no representan a su house, sino a todos los estudiantes. «Queremos innovar, demostrar que podemos asumir la responsabilidad de escuchar a los alumnos y que las actividades cumplan su objetivo», comenta Andrea Guaylupo.

Durante la primera mitad del año, se realizaron cambios en las actividades de los viernes, donde se incluyeron competencias como dodgeball y «canta y gana», que gustaron a sus compañeros. Además, lideraron las asambleas del Día de la Madre y del Día del Maestro e incorporaron nuevas actividades, como poemas, cartas y un rap.

Ahora, el consejo está preparando las actividades de la segunda mitad del año, etapa en la que estarán comprometidos en la organización del Challenge Fest, el House Festival y el House Party.

s part of the activities scheduled by the students of the CAS programme, on 27 May we received the visit from our friends of the Kallpa Educational Association, an institution that provides solutions to expand the opportunities for the integral development of society. On this occasion, the IB ONE and IB TWO students were in charge of welcoming our guests with a show in which they demonstrated the talents being developed in their CAS project.

The musical ensembles and dance companies presented songs, dances and games for our friends of Kallpa, promoting the participation of all those present in our coliseum; a gratifying experience which showed the joy and vocation of our students towards a sensitive, inclusive, responsible, and empathetic society.

l lunes 27 de mayo, como parte de las actividades programadas por los estudiantes del programa CAS, recibimos la visita de nuestros amigos de la Asociación Educativa Kallpa, entidad que propone soluciones para ampliar las oportunidades de desarrollo integral de la sociedad. En esta oportunidad, los estudiantes de IB One y IB Two fueron los encargados de recibir a nuestros invitados con una presentación artística en la que demostraron los talentos que vienen desarrollando en sus proyectos CAS. Los elencos de música y danza presentaron canciones, bailes y juegos para los amigos de Kallpa, propiciando la participación de todos los asistentes en nuestro coliseo. Based on that premise, the Peruano Británico maintains an important position among the most important leading schools of the country, evidenced by the recognitions we have received from the best universities of the capital city.

This year, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and the Universidad del Pacífico have granted us an award for Academic Excellency 2019, in recognition of the quality attained by our students in their performance as college students and in their social commitment.

The importance of choral discipline for the development of children

LA IMPORTANCIA DE LA DISCIPLINA CORAL PARA EL DESARROLLO DE LOS NIÑOS

Elena Ananitcheva was born in Moscow and received singing and violin lessons from the time she was 3 years old. Three years later, music was already her greatest passion, which is why she was admitted to the Childrens’ Musical School at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Her instrument of choice: the piano. At the age of 19, she graduated from the Faculty of Choir Conducting with honours. Her path crossed ours in 1995, when she became the choir teacher at Colegio Peruano Británico. This year she has been preparing the children for a new edition of the Nueva Acropolis Musical Contest.

Tres años después, la música ya era su gran pasión, razón por la cual ingresó a la escuela musical para niños del Conservatorio Tchaikovsky de Moscú. Su instrumento: el piano. Desde 1995 su camino se cruzó con el nuestro, cuando se convirtió en la profesora de coro del Colegio Peruano Británico. Este año ya está preparando a los niños para una nueva edición del Concurso de Música Nueva Acrópolis.

What is the importance of a choral education for children?

Singing in a choir has enormous benefits: it exercises an effect on the circulatory, cardiorespiratory, nervous, and emotional systems. Participating in a choir stimulates both hemispheres of the brain. In other words, the choir has a direct influence on the intellectual development of boys and girls, increasing their creativity and imagination, exercising their memory, improving their vocabulary, and aiding their pronunciation, diction, and articulation.

¿Cuál es la importancia de una educación musical para los niños?

El canto coral aporta enormes beneficios: tiene efectos sobre los sistemas circulatorio, cardiorrespiratorio, nervioso y emocional.

La participación en un coro estimula ambos hemisferios cerebrales. En otras palabras, el coro influye directamente en el desarrollo intelectual de niños y niñas. How has the Colegio Peruano Británico supported the choir group?

Each age has different vocal possibilities and abilities that are progressively developed. We were one of the first schools to divide choral teaching into groups based on stages of development.

How are they preparing for this year’s contest?

For the past twenty-three consecutive years, our school has participated in the Nueva Acropolis Contest, a very important musical event for boys and girls, which we have always won. It is a contest for which we seek the progress of each one of the boys and girls to win. Work is conducted by stages: first voice preparation followed by the selection of the musical repertoire. This year we have been informed that the choir must include songs of Chabuca Granda, and that is why we are practicing and working on one of the songs of this important national singer-songwriter.

What is the objective of the contest?

Winning the contest is useful to improve the overall musical aspect and makes the boys and girls feel important. More than a contest, I see it as the driving force to gradually develop their musical talent. They must always make progress in order to improve these aptitudes that they cultivate.

Este año nos han dicho que debe tener composiciones de Chabuca Granda; por eso estamos practicando y trabajando con una canción de esta importante cantautora nacional. ¿Cuál es el objetivo en la competencia?

Al ganar, los niños y niñas se sienten importantes y sirve para mejorar en todo aspecto musical. Más que una competencia, yo lo veo como un empuje para desarrollar su talento musical progresivamente; siempre deben progresar para mejorar estas aptitudes que ellos cultivan.

STARTING POINT PUNTO DE PARTIDA // Nuestro colegio, que nació del sueño de una maestra británica frente al litoral peruano, ya tiene 56 años de historia.

Ahora, en esta primera edición, mostraremos parte de ese recorrido histórico.

Our school first began as the dream of a British teacher looking over the Peruvian coast, 56 years ago. Now, in this first edition we shall describe part of its historical journey.

rs. Robinson profoundly influenced my personal and professional life,” Miss Gina confessed. “She taught me about the responsibility of being present in my work despite my personal problems,” she said. With a strong personality, few words, observant, and a British spirit, that is how we recall Mrs. Robinson, the teacher who arrived in Peru with the dream of educating youth and who, during an afternoon at the beach, summoned up the courage and determination to create her own school in San Isidro in 1963, until its establishment at its current site in Surco in 1984. The mission was always the same: to educate academically prepared students, with values for their future development in any part of the world, so that they can be useful to society.

“Responsibility and punctuality were key factors,” Miss Gina recalled. An ideal that she shared with each one of the former directors of the school, such as Isaac Falcón, Víctor Castillo and with the present Director, Augusto Gonzales, who works alongside the British Headmaster, Nicholas Hiscocks. Mrs. Robinson was succeeded by Dr. Jorge Power, a man who propelled the growth of the school at every level. During his administration, new pavilions and sports areas have been built, and various student workshops and services were implemented.

In terms of sports, after starting off with only two physical education teachers, today we have an entire staff of teachers in charge of maximising skills and abilities in our students and of forming competitive teams in different disciplines such as athletics, basketball, volleyball, football, karate, table tennis and hockey. The artistic field was also expanded with ballet, marinera, violin, music, musical production workshops as well as computer technology and chess, among many other areas.

Our mission was always the same: to educate academically prepared students with values for their future development in any part of the world, so that they can be useful to society.

En cuanto a deportes, tras empezar con solo dos profesores de educación física, hoy contamos con toda una plana docente que se encarga de potenciar habilidades y destrezas en nuestros estudiantes y formar equipos competitivos en diversas disciplinas, como atletismo, básquet, vóley, fútbol, karate, tenis de mesa y hockey. En el ámbito artístico también se expandió, con talleres de ballet, marinera, violín, música, producción musical, así como en cómputo, ajedrez, entre muchas otras áreas.

For the Peruano Británico, separating the Early Years students by ages is based on the objective of working in a sequence, according to the maturity of the children in each one of the three grades. “Although there is a transversal immersion and discovery programme in English, the experiences that we provide them are based on their needs,” Miss Carla Salas added. “We prepare the students with an internationally recognized programme designed to achieve high standards of competency and the best performance throughout their university years,” remarked Magally Ramos, the IB Coordinator. She highlighted that this programme has a demanding academic level and requires structured organisational skills, independence and autonomy in the students in order to achieve good results in the IB Diploma tests, which are evaluated in Cardiff, the headquarters

“During the time I have worked in this institution, I have seen our students graduate from school with high levels of self-confidence, in addition to mastering their knowledge and assertively applying their solid ethical education,” said Mrs. Rosario Miranda – Admissions Coordinator of the School. With a track-record of thirty-eight years with the school since the years in San Isidro, “Charo” has seen the number of students grow from 650 to the 1137 presently studying at the school.

ithin the context of the festivities that we organised for Mother’s Day, on Monday, 29 April, we received the pleasant visit of the grandmothers of the Santa Luisa de Marillac Home for the Elderly, who visited our school to be entertained. This is an activity that the Peruano Británico has been organising with this home over the past eight years, as a tribute to these women who have marked the life of our students with their example of strength. It has been our way of thanking them.

n el marco de homenajes que preparamos por el Día de la Madre, el lunes 29 de abril recibimos la agradable visita de las abuelitas del asilo Santa Luisa de Marillac, quienes asistieron a nuestro colegio para ser agasajadas. other’s Day and Father’s Day are very special and awaited dates in the Early Years, for which the boys and girls enthusiastically get ready to welcome and pay tribute to their mothers and fathers, thereby showing them their love.

During this year’s celebrations, in May and June, our children sang songs, recited poetry in English, and prepared a special card and various presents, much to the surprise of their parents. Likewise, mothers and fathers participated in different activities, such as preparing breakfast for Mummy, creating a bookmarker, designing a special costume for the story show, acting with their children in a classical story, or playing bingo, among other activities. These events are very much enjoyed by mothers, fathers and children alike who carry away fond memories.

l Día de la Madre y el Día del Padre son fechas muy especiales y esperadas en Early Years, donde los niños y niñas se preparan con mucho entusiasmo para recibir y homenajear a sus papás y mamás, demostrando así el amor que les tienen.

En las celebraciones de este año, en mayo y junio, nuestros pequeños cantaron canciones, declamaron poesías en inglés, prepararon una tarjeta especial y diversos regalos que sorprendieron. Del mismo modo, padres y madres fueron partícipes de distintas actividades, tales como preparar el desayuno a mamá, crear un marcador de libros, diseñar un atuendo especial para el show de cuentos, actuar con sus hijos en un cuento clásico o jugar bingo, entre otras actividades.

CAMINO A LA VICTORIA

ROAD TO VICTORY After participating in the Metropolitan Hockey Tournament for the past six years, the different teams of the Peruano Británico have accumulated sixteen victories. Led by Josefina Navarrete, a former student of the class of 2006, a sports psychologist and hockey trainer for the past eleven years, field hockey has grown by leaps and bounds. Starting with the recruitment of talented hockey players in the Physical Education classes to the creation of the first Under 13 and Under 15 teams, today we have four categories – Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, and Under 17 – who year after year compete for the title. In 2018, the U-10, U-12, and U-15 team categories claimed the title, and this year they all continue on the road to victory.

En seis años participando en el Torneo Metropolitano de Hockey, los diversos equipos del Peruano Británico han acumulado dieciséis títulos. De la mano de Josefina Navarrete, exalumna de la promoción 2006, psicóloga deportiva y entrenadora de esta disciplina desde hace once años, el field hockey ha crecido a pasos agigantados. Empezando con la captación de talentos en las clases de Educación Física hasta la conformación del primer equipo sub-13 y sub-15, hoy contamos con cuatro categorías —sub-10, sub-12, sub-14 y sub-17— que disputan año tras año el título metropolitano. En el 2018 los sub-10, sub-12 y sub-14 levantaron el trofeo; este año todos siguen en carrera por la gloria.

n 2005, 13 years ago, table tennis started to be practised in this school and Conny Campos was the first coach in charged of this team. Since then, the students of the Peruano Británico in the aged 11 Category of Adecopa have been the champions for five consecutive years, a symbol of the endless array of talents that continues with the aged 13 category, which in 2019 are expected to win the title for the third consecutive year. Likewise, our most recent victory was first place in the aged 15 Category.

The foregoing results have implied the joint work of children, parents, school trainers and authorities, because, according to the trainer, table tennis is a hard sport to learn and takes its time to show results, for which institutional support is vital. As emphasised by the trainer, “a sense of community has developed in the team, with minor, adult, beginner, and experienced players who train together and support each other to improve their game,” she concluded.

ace 15 años, en el 2005, este deporte empezó a impulsarse a nivel institucional y Conny Campos fue una de las primeras entrenadoras a cargo del equipo.

Desde entonces, los alumnos del Peruano Británico han levantado la copa de campeón durante cinco años consecutivos en la categoría 11 años de Adecopa, símbolo de una cantera inacabable de talentos que continúa con la categoría 13 años, equipo que este 2019 espera obtener el título por tercera temporada consecutiva. Del mismo modo, la victoria más reciente que conseguimos fue el primer lugar en la categoría 15 años.

Tales resultados han supuesto un importante trabajo en conjunto entre estudiantes, padres, entrenadores y autoridades del colegio, ya que, de acuerdo con la entrenadora, el tenis de mesa es un deporte complicado de aprender y tarda en mostrar resultados, pues la preparación toma tiempo.

Por ello, el aporte institucional es muy importante.

Como resalta la entrenadora, «se ha formado una comunidad al interior del equipo, con menores, mayores, principiantes y experimentados que entrenan juntos y se apoyan para mejorar su juego», finaliza.

he long-awaited end-of-year party of the secondary school students was held in the school coliseum, during which the Class of 2018 provided musical shows, prior to the show of Cesar Mancilla y La Orquesta, who prompted everyone to dance.

“Every year we try not to repeat our activities, from the repertoire of songs to the type of lights used. It is an event that is impatiently awaited by the students, so every detail counts,” commented Miss Carla Colchado, the Activity Coordinator.

Several contests were carried out during the party, with prizes to the most self-confident couple and to the house leaders, even though the crowning moment was our farewell to the graduating IB Two students.

a esperada fiesta de cierre de año de los estudiantes de Secundaria se celebró en el coliseo de nuestro colegio. Durante la fiesta, se realizaron divertidas competencias, con premios a la pareja más desenvuelta y a los líderes de los houses que contaron con mayor asistencia. Aunque el momento cumbre llegó con la despedida que se le hizo a la promoción de 5º de Secundaria.

raditionally, once a year, a native British narrator visits our school to tell stories in English as part of the Dream On activities held in the coliseum. During this activity, the guest storyteller used an advanced level of British vocabulary for the students to continue their progress in the mastery of this language.

“The stories told have a historical and cultural importance in relation to the British Colony in the world. The students learn about British tradition, well-known people, and culture,” remarked Carla Colchado, Activity Coordinator.

omo es tradición, una vez al año, un narrador nativo de Inglaterra visita nuestro colegio para relatar historias en inglés como parte de la actividad Dream On que se realiza dentro del Coliseo. Durante esta actividad, el cuentista invitado emplea un nivel avanzado del vocabulario británico, lo que permite que los estudiantes sigan progresando en el aprendizaje de este idioma.

«Las relatos que se presentan tienen una connotación histórica y cultural sobre la colonia británica en el mundo. Los estudiantes aprenden la tradición, los personajes y la cultura de allá», resalta sobre la importancia de la actividad, Carla Colchado, Coordinadora de actividades.

London calling The English capital offers a priceless experience to foreign students.

La capital inglesa ofrece una experiencia invaluable a los alumnos extranjeros.

s part of the international experience offered by Colegio Peruano Británico, each year students of the second form have the opportunity of travelling to London for a period of three weeks, with the purpose of practising their English and learning British history, culture and traditions in the very same country.

Nicholas Hiscocks, our Headmaster, has explained that intensive immersion in the language is important during this trip, and the cultural objective is for the students to visit the historical sites such as Henry VIII’s Royal Palace or the Home of Sir Winston Churchill.

“Instead of reading or seeing films about it, they can say: ‘I have been there and seen that.’ They also learn about the origin of many historical monuments,” he said. Art and tourism are also part of the experience since there is a day set aside to go to the theatre and the cinema. This trip implies a cultural approach and an opportunity for each student to acquire academic and personal knowledge.

omo parte de la experiencia internacional que ofrece el Colegio Peruano Británico, cada año los alumnos de segundo de secundaria tienen la oportunidad de viajar a Londres por tres semanas, con el objetivo de practicar su inglés, conocer in situ la historia, la cultura y las tradiciones británicas.

«En vez de leer o ver películas, ellos pueden decir: yo he visto eso. Aprenden también sobre el origen de muchos monumentos históricos», comenta. El arte y el turismo también son parte de la experiencia, pues hay un día reservado para ir al cine y al teatro.

Este viaje supone un acercamiento a la cultura británica, además de una oportunidad para que cada alumno adquiera conocimiento académico y personal.

ach year, our school organizes study trips that contribute to the well-rounded education of the students, in accordance with the objectives of the National Curriculum and its goals as an institution.

“Destinations are chosen according to the curricular needs of each grade and the cultural wealth of the destination,” explained Carla Colchado, CAS and Activities Coordinator. Currently, two trips to Ica and Cusco are being arranged.

Actualmente se realizan dos viajes: a Ica y al Cusco.

El viaje a Ica-Paracas, por su corta duración (tres días), está pensado para todos los alumnos de primero de secundaria; mientras que el Cusco posee una riqueza cultural e histórica que lo convierte en una alternativa ideal para los alumnos de tercero de secundaria, quienes lo realizan cuando terminan la etapa de sus estudios sobre Historia y Geografía del Perú. Un destino cultural, turístico y educativo.

Ambos viajes se ofrecen a todos los estudiantes de la promoción, pero la participación es voluntaria. El desarrollo de las clases para quienes no participan es normal, pues se desarrollan los mismos temas en las aulas del Colegio.

EXPERIENCIA DE FE CRISTIANA

Christian faith experience For the first time, fourth grade primary school students received the Holy Communion.

Estudiantes de 4º de primaria recibieron por primera vez el sacramento de la eucaristía.

he fourth-grade primary students prepared themselves for almost 6 months, during the hours reserved for the course of Religion in order to attend classes offered by the catechists of the Church of the Sacred Heart. During the process, they also participated in a spiritual retreat and mass. All of it was directed towards 8th of September, the date on which they received their first communion.

“Everything went well, the children were happy to receive the sacrament. The highlight was the joy reflected in their little faces and the emotive nature of the ceremony,” Carmen Murillo observed, who was in charge of the first communion.

os estudiantes de cuarto de primaria se prepararon aproximadamente 6 meses en las horas del curso de Religión para asistir a clases brindadas por catequistas de la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón.

Durante el proceso, también participaron en un retiro espiritual y una misa explicada. Todo dirigido al 8 de setiembre, fecha en la que los estudiantes de 4º de primaria realizaron la primera comunión.

«Todo salió muy bien; los niños estuvieron muy contentos al recibir el sacramento. Lo más resaltante fue la alegría reflejada en sus caritas y lo emotivo de la ceremonia», señala Carmen Murillo, encargada de la primera comunión.

Success behind the racket

Luciana Pereyra has proved that success requires a lot of effort and discipline. Now she has been granted a scholarship by the University of Findlay in Ohio, thanks to her academic and sporting prowess, she is preparing to face new challenges.

Luciana Pereyra ha demostrado que el éxito requiere de mucho esfuerzo y disciplina. Ahora que ha sido becada por la University of Findlay, en Ohio, gracias a su labor académica y deportiva, se prepara para nuevos retos.

t the age of seven, Luciana moved to La Molina with her parents who were amateurs of a sport which they had just begun to practice: tennis. They always wanted her to practice this sport so, little by little – with the promise of buying her a tennis racket – Luciana made the tennis courts her new home. “I began playing and took the sport seriously when I began participating in national tournaments at the age of 10,” she recalled. Five years later, the young tennis player, initially unwilling to dirty her tennis shoes with mud, was already participating in her first international tournament of COSAT in Ecuador and later on in the Junior ITF. Today, at the age of 18, she is well aware that overcoming her own fears is more important than winning tournaments. “It is a mental more than a physical competition, and it is only by defeating myself that I can win on the courts,” said Luciana, who only two months before received an academic and sports scholarship from the University of Findlay in Ohio, thanks to her tennis skills and her high academic grades. Next year, the tennis player will begin a new journey that may be somewhat complicated but for which she trusts her ability. After all, after ten years playing on clay tennis courts, she has learned all about discipline and determination.

los siete años, Luciana se mudó a La Molina junto con sus padres, aficionados a un deporte en el que acababan de iniciarse: el tenis. Siempre buscaron que ella fuera de la mano con el deporte; y así, de a pocos —ayudados con la promesa de comprarle una raqueta—, Luciana comenzó a hacer de las canchas de tenis su nuevo hogar. «Comencé a jugar y la cosa se volvió seria cuando participó a los 10 años en torneos nacionales», recuerda. Cinco años después, la joven tenista, reacia a manchar sus zapatillas con arcilla en un primer momento, ya participaba en su primer torneo internacional de la Cosat en Ecuador y, después, en los ITF Junior.

Hoy, a sus 18 años, tiene claro que, más que ganar competencias, lo importante es vencer sus propios temores. «Más que una competencia física, es algo mental. Solo venciéndome a mí misma podré hacer mías las canchas», cuenta Luciana, que hace dos meses recibió una beca académica y deportiva en la University of Findlay, en Ohio, Estados Unidos, gracias a su destreza con la raqueta y sus altos promedios académicos. Para el siguiente año, la tenista empezará en un nuevo entorno. Puede ser algo complicado, pero confía en su capacidad. Después de todo, tras diez años jugando sobre la arcilla, aprendió que todo se trata de disciplina y determinación.

ast year, Class 51 of the Peruano Británico graduated on an afternoon full of emotions. That day, we were honoured by the presence of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom in Peru, Mrs. Kate Harrisson, relatives, teachers and friends.

“The parents were anxiously awaiting this moment, showing their joy, satisfaction, and pride of their children,” remarked Miss Magally Ramos, Coordinator of the IB Programme. During the ceremony, Adriana Hiromoto, who came in at the top of the class, and Gonzalo Gal’lino and Eric Wong who came in second and third, respectively, were acknowledged for their
