Liderazgo en el mundo de hoy

Leadership in the world today I

t is a pleasure and honour as Headmaster to address the school body through the media of our school magazine. I would like to dedicate my address to the most important component of any school, our students, parents and my colleagues educators. Albert Einstein succinctly summed education up when he said: “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change”. Following this premise, as an institution, we are a reflection of what has been, what we are and what we will be and Colegio Peruano Britanico during its 56 years of existence has had to adapt accordingly. I would like to draw your attention to national and international student accomplishments. Internationally we have students who are or have studied at prestigious universities in the Far East, the United States and the UK to mention just a few. Overseas ex CPB alumni have successfully completed their Masters and Doctorates in diverse subjects and others are continuing their studies, for example, a Doctorate in Biology at Yale and a Masters in Journalism at Kent University.Nationally one of our students obtained first place at a prestigious university studying Architecture, and almost all of our students this year have already obtained a placed in one of the most important Peruvian Universities. It is important to mention that the school has received awards of academic excellence not only from Lima’s most prestigious universities but also from Ambassadors who the school authorities work closely with. I know for a fact that an increasing number of our graduating students this year are applying to study at overseas universities on diverse continents, because they feel capable and prepared to face a world in constant change. Students you are the privileged few who as the result of your parents’ endeavours and sacrifices receive a truly bilingual education with traditional values. You are exposed to many cultures not only through the alumni you mix with but also through your international teachers in your preparation to take your place in society. But please remember learning does not stop when school ends. It is just starting and you will have the opportunity to make a real contribution and difference not only in Peru but globally. As Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world”. That weapon is now being placed in your hands. Use it wisely. In the future you will meet with difficulties, you will make mistakes. Don’t let them dishearten you because these obstacles will become your biggest teachers. I wish all of you every success in your endeavours.

E

Nicholas Hisckocks Headmaster

fter four days of intense debate, the Peruano Britanico MUN team demonstrated their potential, gaining the accolade of ‘Outstanding Small Delegation’ at the third edition of the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference, hosted by Pennsylvania State University. “The best students from across Lima come to this conference, therefore it is necessary to be well prepared in order to be able to support each and every one of your ideas”, stated Stefano Raffo, a Form III student who was awarded an ‘Outstanding Delegate’ award at the conference. In this conference Stefano was challenged to discuss two distinct topics; human trafficking and free market treaties.

“I represented the United States and had to reach bilateral agreements with regional members, whilst also increasing border security and gaining the support of the CIA in order to focus on the specific pints related to human trafficking, indicated Stefano, confessing also that this was the first time he had to debate two distinct, but related, topics at an MUN conference. “The level of difficulty is increased due to the fact that it is necessary to produce two position papers to the dais, necessitating double the research. With this award Stefano achieved his sixth MUN accolade since his debut last year. Fabiana Gutierrez was also recognized for her contribution during the conference, taking home the coveted ‘Best Delegate’ award. “My favourite committee type are crisis committees. It was in one of these committees that I gained my first MUN award last year, stated Fabiana, who has achieved 8 awards this far in her 15 years of age. She recognises, however, that she still has much to learn. “I believed previously that I understood how everything functions during an MUN conference, but at the Ivy League conference I understood the true meaning of the term committee and what it truly means to develop a strategy, explained the Form III student, who on this occasion represented France. de Libre Comercio.

SANTA TERESITA Some weeks later our students faced a new challenge, this time at the Santa Teresita Model United Nations Conference, where once again they were awarded the ‘Best Delegation’ award. Once again, Fabiana and Stefano were recognised, this time both winning ‘best delegate’, along with Jimena Bercerra. “I believe that one of my strengths was having previous knowledge of my topic. I am very interested in politics and international economics. Having this background gave me the ability to know where to focus myself and not have to start from zero, affirmed Stefano, who on this occasion debated cybernetic security. At this conference Fabiana was in the Press Corps committee, with the mission to report on the developments of each committee. “Both the quantity and quality of the content I produced were important, along with my creativity”, she stated. At this event we obtained eight individual awards; Rodrigo Hernández (Outstanding Delegate), Diego Lanza (Honourable Mention), Diego Añez (Honourable Mention), Constanza Vizquerra (Verbal Mention) y Mariana Santa María (Verbal Mention).

O

ne of the forty activities the students from the eight British schools in Peru participate in, is the ‘Book Look’. In September 2019, Hiram Bingham School was the venue where eight of our Fifth Grade students gave life to the five books they had been reading throughout the school year. With recycled elements such as bottle caps, plastic and paper, the students built accessories that would later be used to create dramatizations based on the content of their reading matter. Some of them —on the subject of friendship and respect— were The Witches, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. «This activity not only allowed them to consolidate their knowledge of the English language but also to interact with the students from other British schools» says Mark Scarlett, the CPB’s representative before the BSP Association.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

During a long morning in August, he and other students of the Primary and Secondary School displayed their skills and talents and proudly represented the school in the Mathematics Festival organised by ADECOPA. Through projects or “missions”, which had to be solved in groups, the competition evaluated both the academic and social skills of the participants from 28 schools of Lima. «Our overall results were good. Fifth Grade were awarded a prize for “Collaborative Work” and the Sixth Grade were awarded first and second place in the “Academic” category and first in “Collaborative Work”» remarked Rosa María Vílchez, the Mathematics Co-ordinator of the Primary School at Peruano Britanico. «This reflects the collaborative work we practice in the classroom: our students not only have the knowledge but they know how to work as a team with tolerance and acceptance».

or the past four years, in the mid-year holiday season (July), Form II CPB students have been traveling to London, England for a three weeks cultural visit. «It is an educational trip in which our students are able to learn about the British culture» says Eliana Meza-Cuadra, a teacher at our institution. «It also fullt immerse them and allows them to put into practice their knowledge of the English language, which has been developing from Nursery through to IB Two». The trip is organised by the Independent Schools Cultural Alliance (ISCA), in the United Kingdom, as a result of which our students are able to share their experiences with other students from different parts of the world, which in 2019, included students from Australia, United States and the Argentine. In London amongst many other cities, our students visited the main cultural centres—such as museums and castles— and in their free time in the evenings participated in sporting activities organised on a daily basis, which allowed them to further interaction with students of the same age. «This was a valuable experience for them because it allowed them to show their independence and autonomy, both on personal and decision-making levels» concludes Ms. Meza-Cuadra.

Our group of volunteers in IB Two decided to raise the funds required to build two houses in the settlement of Pamplona Alta. With this goal in mind, at the end of August they organised a contest called “Techo Rapea”, a rapping contest in which the students of the Secondary School battled against each other in the CPB coliseum using two weapons: rhythm and improvisation. «It was a fascinating and successful experience, not only because they reached their goal with the proceeds obtained from the sale of tickets and the proceeds from the kiosks, but because we watched them selflessly use their talent for a worthwhile cause», commented Carla Colchado, the CAS Programme Co-ordinator.

Every year, we at Colegio Peruano Británico create strategic alliances with centres and associations engaged in attending to the different needs in our society. In 2019, we established a strategic alliance with the Vuela Colibrí association who dedicate themselves to the inclusion of disabled persons into our society. Therefore, starting in April, our students successfully participated in the PreCAS by initiating fund-raising tasks and plans, which ended in November with a visit to the centre. «Thanks to PreCAS our students have become more aware of the needs of a society for equality and equity, distributing the rights and benefits equally to all» concludes Carla Colchado.

As part of the Americas InterCAS event, held this year at the Colegio Alexander Fleming in Trujillo, these three IB One students joined forces with the organisation of cultural and welfare activities designed to improve the structure of the educational services in Huanchaco. «We worked in a soup kitchen and in four schools, implementing mobile libraries, improving the play areas, building a new pre-fabricated room for the storage of educational material, setting up educational entertainment spaces, in addition to making cultural visits to landmarks in the area such as Chan Chan» remarked Carla Colchado, the co-ordinator of this activity at CPB. «Environmental work was also carried out to rescue the Totora reed banks, representative of one of the most important economic activities of the fishermen in Huanchaco» she added. The Americas InterCAS is the product of the joint efforts of the CAS co-ordinators of all the IB schools in Peru and Latin American to organise meetings to exchange experiences of social responsibility, attending to the different needs of our American, Latin American and nationwide environment. This year, Peru was represented by a total of 60 students out of the 130 students attending from Latin America, thereby constituting the largest delegation.

owards the end of the afternoon on Monday, September 30, Rafaella Piscoya came out of her room. Her mother was calling her insistently. She went to the living room and read the latest news: President Martin Vizcarra had just dissolved the Congress. Two hours later, she had already tuned into Channel N and RPP, paying attention to every detail of what was happening in the Congress of the Republic, reading articles in the newspapers “El Comercio”, “Hildebrant a sus Trece”, “La República” and “El Peruano”. She even looked up the Peruvian Constitution. «I wanted to know if what was happening was constitutional or not» she recalls. After watching and reading the news for almost seven hours, her day ended at one o’clock in the morning — four hours later than her usual bedtime during the week — with articles written based on all of the incidents she had researched during the day, as if she had to deliver it to a newspaper editor by deadline. Rafaella is fourteen-years-old and is presently in Form II. However, despite her young age, her articles would be published in the newspaper 22 Times, which she founded together with her friends in 2017 when she was barely 11 years old and in Sixth Grade. Today, she manages the newspaper with Carolina Ibazeta, Gabriela Garay, Aníbal Quiróz, Aitana Espinoza, Wendy Sánchez and Alejandra Ruíz. In the newspaper, the students discuss all kinds of subjects: politics, national problems, historical facts in the world, criminology and a fun section that includes jokes and riddles. «The serious nature of our articles has gradually evolved, but we are always trying to maintain that quota of humour to balance things» says Rafaella. Carolina Ibazeta is in charge of this fun section, «I wasn’t very interested in politics, my thing was the fun part, publishing jokes or quizzes. Exercises such as these continue to exercise our brain. One can laugh, criticise them or do what one wants.

writing articles on criminology, a curiosity she has had for a very long time and that began with those police riddles. «I was always interested in knowing why serial killers committed those types of crimes, what they were thinking, since these cases make you think» she says. Presently, she is finishing her investigation on the case of John Wayne Gacy, the “Joker” killer In the United States. «Initially, they didn’t let us approach these subjects, but they are things that happen in the real world and that we must know about. I know that many of you won’t be interested but the fact that I felt good investigating them, leaves me satisfied and at peace. And if the lector manages to get a message from my article, that would be wonderful» she confesses. For Rafaella, that is the basis of this project launched two years ago, proposing topics among all the members of the group, whether funny or serious, but that

they are willing to write about, always being respectful and formal.

*** «I want to publish a magazine» was the first thing an irreverent Rafaella said to Augusto Gonzales, the National Director of the School, two years ago. «I “want” is not a good verb, better replace it with “we wish.” Where is your team to publish your magazine?» recalls the Director, who during that first year became in the editing and publishing. He still recalls the day when they arrived at his office with the first edition and the wish to publish it. It was a well organised sheet of paper containing an article dedicated to Diego Añez, a swimmer and student at the School, entertaining quizzes and film, books and music reviews. «This is the first

journalistic club of the School and it has a life of its own. They have an editorial line, with political or scientific articles combined with topics for younger children such as jokes, but always taking care not to attack or make fun of another person or their condition» says the Director. For him, every class has its profile and the one that defines the Class of 2022 is the students’ critical thinking, because they have been educated to think this way. «From a very young age they have participated in MUN — an event that was initially for IB One and IB Two students — and they were fascinated by the debates, inquiries, the preparation of arguments and their defence». *** Today, a new edition of 22 Times is about to be issued. For Rafaella, this is a new opportunity to define her future. «I believe that journalism is my destiny. With this project I have realised how much I love to write, not only for the newspaper, but for myself. When I see something that impresses me and I don’t truly understand what I´m feeling, I put it into words. Writing is a way of understanding myself» she explains. At the same time, the leader of the newspaper never loses sight of the fact that with each article they will be subject to public scrutiny and that criticism and ridicule will always exist. After all, these are 14-year-old children but, as hard as it may seem, with editorial experience. «Initially, criticism affected me because it is my work and I dedicate a lot of time to this. But one must not do things to be accepted but because one loves doing them. I don’t publish the newspaper for people to like me; the time I spend with my team in the classroom, reviewing the topics, is time that I enjoy, which I would not change for anything in the world» she says. «In the end, when we are given our work, when we re-read it and like it, that will be the best feeling. Because we did it and we are proud of it».

mong the dozens of musical groups from the different participating schools, the jury selected three choirs from Peruano Británico to participate in the Winners Concert at the traditional Nueva Acropolis Music Contest. Both the voices of our talented children in Kindergarten and those of the choir in 1st and 2nd Grade, as well as the students of the 3th to 6th Grades of Primary School, received the applause of the public in the Peruvian-Japanese Theatre and the trophies as the winners of the contest, on an October evening full of rhythm, colour and harmony. «We chose songs with long lyrics and rhythms that were rather complex for the ages of the children» says Kelly Reyes, the Director of the Kindergarten choir, who worked with the music teacher, Vicente Calderón. «We worked hard to consolidate the group and thanks to the support of the School, we managed to achieve this» adds the Director. For the fourth grader Santiago Castillo, it was a marvelous experience: «This was the second time that I participated. I concentrated all my efforts into following the instructions of the teacher and I didn’t feel nervous, but happy and excited». It must be noted that the Primary School choirs were led by the Director Elena Ananitcheva.

The cup of life

After a gruelling final match, Peruano Británico was crowned champion of the under-17 ADECOPA indoor football tournament.

t ten minutes to five in the afternoon, in the indoor football field at the Colegio Villa Alarife, in Chorrillos, Santiago Soto and his schoolmates received technical instructions from their trainer, Ivan. The first half of the match had ended and the score was 1 to 0 in their favour. Up to that moment had been winning but the team members were rather doubtful about the unknown outcome. «This is the same group of players that have been playing together since the first grade. We had never reached a final match —to date, this team’s best result was to reach the quarter finals— and this was our last year, the last match of our last tournament» recalls Santiago, who scored the first goal in the final match. After finishing the groups phase as leaders of the B Series, with three matches won and two ending in a tie, CPB’s football team had exceeded the quarter finals barrier, becoming one of the four ADECOPA schools by beating a tough rival team 7 to 1 in the semi-finals. How did this team get to the final? Santiago, the captain and goal scorer of the team, says that the experience gained by playing against the

«Playing against stronger and more experienced teams marked the difference. In that tournament we came first in the groups category and we were defeated in the quarter finals but we are sure that this experience was useful for this year» said the 1.87-metre-tall goal scorer. In the final match, with a well-rehearsed formation, the CPB team was well aware that their stamina and force would be a decisive factor. Being aggressive and clean when marking an opposing player, closing the spaces and supplementing it with good passes were the objectives. Thus, after the temporary tie, the 2-1 score arrived thanks to the goal of Diego Medina; and later, after a counterattack, Santiago ended the final match with a score of 3-1, making it goal number 22 for the attacker; a goal that, for the first time, crowned him as the top scorer in the tournament. Goal and final whistle. The celebration began. «Our entire class was in the stand; our schoolmates had made every effort to go to Villa. When the match ended, we all hugged each other with joy and satisfaction. This cup means a lot to us» said Santiago, recalling a war cry of the team members: «We did it!».

Passion for the racket

A quick look into the career of Juan Pablo Varillas, a successful Peruvian tennis player and former student of our institution.

W

hoever has seen Juan Pablo Varillas giving his all on a tennis court, can hardly imagine him in any other scenario. However, although he is presently Peru’s top tennis player, it is only a few years ago that he walked the corridors of the Peruano Britanico as a student in the promotion of 2012. Encouraged by a very sports-oriented family, Juan Pablo began practicing football at school and continued doing so until he was fifteen, when he fell in love with tennis. However, this did not prevent him from continuing to participate in the tournaments between ‘Houses’. At seventeen he was faced with a serious conundrum: whether to enrol in university or pursue a career in tennis. Today, he does not regret his decision. «Tennis makes me feel things that no other activity does», he explains. «I play tennis because it is my passion». From that moment on, he began training harder and participating in tournaments around the world. Success arrived gradually according to his sacrifice and hard work. Now, at twenty-four, he is enjoying a major professional moment. After obtaining the bronze medal in the men’s doubles category of the Pan American Games Lima 2019, in October he was crowned the champion in two important tournaments: the Challenger of Campinas (Brazil) and the Santo Domingo Open (Dominican Republic). Thanks to these titles, he has jumped to position 155 in the ranking of the Peruvian Tennis Association (ATP). But Varillas does not rest there. During the Challenger Tournament of Montevideo, he disclosed his new short-term goal: to be ranked among the top 100 in the world.

Q

Future checkmate F

or us it may be a simple movement of the arm from one side to the other, forwards, sideways, and on some occasions, backwards. For them, it is a source of constant nerves and mental exhaustion. Competing requires a certain lifestyle: a good diet and rest is vital to increase the sharpness of the brain during a match. Javier Uría, the trainer of the chess team at our School, made these instructions his dogma. His experience as a teacher since 1996 — having been the trainer of the national youth team between 2010 and 2011— has given him the ability to recognise when a match is at a critical point, when to make a specific decision, what to do when there are less than five minutes left and what type of decisions to make or strategy to use. From the time he became a member of staff at Peruano Británico in 2008, he took on the responsibility of making our chess players a competitive team in the ADECOPA and BSP tournaments. «What they needed is more competitive experience. Not only by participating in these two tournaments, but in others that would be useful to us to excel in the higher level national, metropolitan, school, South American or Latin American championships» Uría says. «Another factor to be improved was the training in the solution of exercises. Chess problem solving according to the level and the positions that may arise in a match, in order to recognise the different patterns of the game and, so that students learn certain automatic movements during a match» he adds. The results came with time. Our Primary and Secondary school teams were crowned the champions five consecutive times in the BSP tournament. Now we are in the midst of a change, at which time our teacher has decided to focus on the pool of reserve players, having around 15 to 20 students from Primary School with enough potential to win a place on the podium. This year, in the under 11 ADECOPA tournament they came fourth and third in the BSP tournament. The goal is to be crowned the champions next year.

Learn about our chess team and the school’s support for the children.

Children and parents of the Nursery, Pre-Kinder and Kindergarten levels participated in different academic, artistic and play activities, such as classroom games, dance, music, theatre and karate displays, amongst others. In addition, the parents were able to look at their artwork exhibited in the corridors of the School. Finally, they all participated in a ‘Houses’ sports tournament. «The purpose of the Special Week was for the parents to experience the learning methodology that we use with their children in the School, always through play and teamwork» explained Carla Salas, the Early Years co-ordinator. «And so it was: the parents left as happy and exhausted as their children at the end of a school day».

New, young friends With games and different activities, the School welcomes the future Early Years students.

L

ike every year, in September we held the “Welcome to CPB” programme, during which we welcomed the little ones about to enter the Nursery school level (Early Year’s First Grade) next year. They were six fun-filled afternoons, distributed over a period of two weeks, in which the children played games, engaged in musical experiences and psychomotor exercises alongside their future teachers. «The idea is to begin to get know each other and for both children and parents to become familiar with the routines and school spaces so as to be able to begin their classes with more self-confidence» explains Carla Salas, the Early Years Coordinator. «It is always a success: the students are happy from the first day… and when the last day arrives they don’t want to leave!»

Back to 1989

DE VUELTA A 1989 O ne month later, the Class of 1989 — taking advantage of the celebration of their 30th anniversary as graduates — had the opportunity to return to a classroom. The appointment was on September 21st and the special guest was Javier Oviedo, the much loved Language and Literature teacher who retired in July last year after more than thirty years of service to the School. Prior to going to the ‘House’ where the event would take place, Oviedo gave the former students a surprise, organised in complicity with the Co-ordinator Gina Higashi. In a classroom of the School, he dictated a sample class that brought back memories and emotions. After taking attendance and singing the school anthem, the teacher made a brief presentation after which he read a poem which he wrote, Camino de Retorno (The Way Back). «When I raised my head, everyone was in tears: it was moving» said Oviedo. «So I

asked them how long it had been since they had seen each other, where they worked, how had the education they had received at School been useful to them and what were their nicest experiences here. They became enthusiastic and all of them wanted to participate». The teacher and the former students recalled anecdotes and antics, from their memories of the courses, school companions and teachers. «According to them, I was not merely their teacher. I was their psychologist, their doctor, their friend, their confidant … and that is what I believe that every teacher should be». After completing the class, the former students conveyed a serious concern of theirs to Oviedo: «What does it feel like to be the most loved teacher by all? I answered that I felt the happiest man in the world thanks to them, who enriched my life».

A WOMAN OF SCIENCE Today, our former student Cayetana Arnaiz is pursuing a doctoral degree in Cell Biology. Tomorrow, she may be collaborating with the dissemination of science amongst the Peruvian youth. Will this mark the beginning of a new era for science?

By: Andrea Mena

C

ayetana Arnaiz is about to complete her doctoral degree in Cell Biology, at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, United States). Her first contact with science was at our School — this course attracted her interest and curiosity— without realising that less than a decade later it would become her passion. After finishing her years at School in 2010, she was admitted to Cayetano Heredia University to study biology. It was during the last year of her studies that she applied to the Research Experience for Peruvian Undergraduates (REPU) programme, which allowed her to pursue her internship at Vanderbilt University for a period of six months. Upon her return, she decided to pursue a doctoral degree in the same study centre in the United States, which she began in 2017. Currently, Cayetana is conducting research on the cytoskeleton — extremely important for the study of degenerative diseases, since it is responsible for cell division processes. And although she is busy defining her future plans, she is certain that upon completing her studies she will be returning to Peru to disseminate science. «One of the reasons why science is still in the development stage in our country is due to the lack of communication between the laboratories and the public in general. With my work I would like to contribute towards the dissemination of science» says Arnaiz. «It would also be wonderful to start this work with children, for them to discover that they can have a voice in creation and invention» she concludes.

C

We spoke with Augusto Gonzales, National Director of Colegio Peruano Británico, who stops for a moment to think about the Class of 2019 which is about to graduate and how these seventy students take more than his heart with them.

THIS CLASS WILL BE LEAVING WITH THEIR NATIONAL DIRECTOR

CPB Life // Vida CPB

What are the feelings in a Director when he sees that a new class is about to leave? Each time a class of students begins the process of leaving the School, in terms of their studies, it creates a void in the Director because in this daily co-existence, one gets to know them from a very tender age, one watches them grow, not only physically but mentally as well, and one celebrates their autonomy and successes in different areas. We are also witnesses to the problems they have encountered throughout their school life and how one has guided them to search for the right person, not only to advise them but to accompany them as well, making them strong and shaping their own character to face the difficulties of life.

CPB 65

Can the personality of a class be described? Of course, and one notices it during the activities we share together. I highlight the unity of this class. A very cohesive group is graduating. I am not saying that they have not had their frictions among themselves, but they have been able to overcome those moments. They have joined forces in events as a class. There must be many anecdotes … Naturally, such as the play for the British schools - the One Act Play— in IB One, in which the students presented very formative scenes that made the Primary and Secondary School students value the effort of sending a message through theatre, which is not only merely fun but also has to do with delivering messages on ethics, morals and friendship. Subsequently, they worked hard in the CAS. The dedication they displayed in the burns unit of the Children’s Hospital, in the Cancer Disease Institute (INEN) or with the pensioners at the old people’s home, has shaped their character, allowing their spirit of collaboration towards others come forward. And lastly, in the Inter-Houses they proved to be a very active class, both in dance and sports. The leadership of all the House Sports Captains and the Prefects in all the activities must be highlighted. Unlike others, this class had 16 House Sports Captains and 16 Academic Prefects. It also had eight members on the Student’s Council, which was formerly unheard of. What piece of news would make you smile when you hear about them again? The news that would make me smile is that they have been successful in all those matters that concerned them the most. Sometimes the students believe they will not achieve something but five or six years later one bumps into former students abroad who are pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees, a fact that gives one much satisfaction as a Director and as part of the School’s staff team, because it proves that it was worthwhile rooting for them. Will you feel that void again as you watch them leave? It will bring a tear to my eyes because I will be leaving with this class. Perhaps that is why we are very close, because we will be leaving together, a fact that makes me sad and nostalgic; but that is life. Just as they finish school, I finish my life as an employee and retire. So, one could say that this class leaves with their Director.

Building his future Diego Medina was the most deserving student for a scholarship at UCAL (University of Sciences and Arts of Latin America).

A

fter giving a three-minute speech to support the project with which he would, through his future career, contribute towards improving society, Diego Medina understood that the profession he had in mind as a young child, when he built football stadiums with small wooden sticks and cardboard, was the right one. On Thursday 3rd October, in front of the director of the Faculty of Architecture at UCAL —and two other directors — our IB Two student was granted an excellence scholarship. «I developed a project on bridges and how they could be built out of unconventional materials such as stone, to avoid contamination and decay. In addition to being a way to encourage the work in some sectors of Peru» remarked Diego, aged 17. This process began at Peruano Britanico’s EVOCA fair, held at the beginning of the year. However, it was a student of the School who encouraged him to apply. «Adriana Hiromoto, who won the same scholarship last year, encouraged me to participate. She finally convinced me» he recalls. Now is the moment to shape his future and build a bridge that will take him there.

L
