Moreover, more controversy surrounds Co-Host Mexico, who have experienced internal disputes in the build up to the competition. The Mexican cartel landscape recently faced a large shift, with the death of ‘Cartel Leader ’ "El Mencho" during a military raid in February 2026. This has since sparked massive retaliatory violence across the country, destabilising the criminal underworld of Mexico, and disrupting life within Mexico’s host cities for the World Cup. The destabilisation of Mexico, just 2 months before the competition begins contributes further to the unstable nature of the 2026 World Cup, and despite President Claudia Sheinbaum announcement that “there was ‘ no risk’ to fans coming to the country” , some remain sceptical about the risks of criminal violence entering the football culture

Lastly, questions have arisen surrounding certain countries' legibility to compete in FIFA and UEFA tournaments. In 2022, FIFA gained much support after expelling Russia from International football. This was a clear statement against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and aimed to state intent to counter aggressive political action. Despite this, the governing boards have faced masses of criticism for their continuation to let Israel compete in tournaments, with many seeing parallels between Russia’s invasion, and Israel's attack on Palestine.

Although Israel failed to qualify for the World Cup, the football federation continues to face protests towards the apparent ‘double standards’, which some attribute to economic and political influence, despite FIFA remaining a “neutral governing body” .

In summary, what has been a highly awaited tournament will prove pivotal for football and politics, with the uncertain outcomes looking to shape the future of Global Football and international relations
