Editor’s Note  As I sit here at my desk skimming through the pages of Issue 3 one last time before sending it off to the printers, I find myself already thinking about how far BSB Newsblast has come, growing steadily from 20 pages, to 24 pages in Issue 2, and now 32 pages in this issue, all packed full of information about the events and activities going on at BSB this term. Once could easily be forgiven for thinking that this is a comprehensive annual review, rather than just a glimpse into the life of a student at BSB . It is sometimes too easy for teachers and students alike to lose sight of just how much is really happening at BSB as the school grows and we all become more focused on our particular subject or things going on within a particular year group. The school magazine is a good reminder to us all that BSB is a constant hive of activity, with school trips and special class, year, Key Stage, and school events going on continually. Looking through this magazine looking at how much effort all the teachers and students are putting in to make BSB a great school makes me feel really lucky to be here. It has been a great year and we can all be proud of just how much we have achieved working together in just one year.

The people I want to thank most this issue, however, are the students for the number of the articles they contributed. Each issue has seen ever more students getting involved with the production of BSB Newsblast and next year with the new editorial committees in place, in both the Primary School and Secondary School, I think we can expect that the magazine will reflect campus life at BSB from the student’s point of view more than ever.

I would like to wish all those who are moving on to new countries and new schools the very best, and to those of you who are returning, I hope you have a wonderful holiday and return to BSB with lots of interesting stories to write about for the first issue which will be totally revamped and refreshed, and is due out at the end of October.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped out on this issue. BSB Charity Update Throughout the summer term we have continued to receive a wide range of toys, clothing and toiletries for our local charities. We appreciate your continued support in these projects and we have managed to gather a wide range of items which are being distributed.

Our ‘Gifted and Talented’ team had a market, selling a range of items. They managed to raise an amazing 600 RON. The money raised will go towards OviduRom. This summer they have a summer school set up to help pupils achieve and to give them extra lessons so as to help their achievement. These schools take place in the more impoverished areas of Romania where dropping out from school is very high.

Our BSB Summer fair was a fantastic success and we raised a huge 200 euros which will be distributed evenly to the following charitiesAteliare Project- This organisation helps young adults with mental disabilities.

Azil near special hospital 10- this home is for elderly people who have no family. They will also receive toiletries which have been donated.

St.Stelians- an organization set up to work with blind children.

OviduRom- a charity working throughout Romania to help get children back into school and learning. For more details, visit www.ovid.ro.

Valentina- this charity is set up to support abandoned and poorer families. They help families receive funding in order to attend pre-school. For more details visit: www.valentina-romania.ro/begin/index.html We also had the opportunity for some charities to come along to our BSB fair and present some of the items they make and sell. This included the charity, ‘Touched’ and the sisters of St.John were also able to join us. They would like you to be made aware of the work they are doing to build a prayer place. Our end of Year production has helped raise money for the local charity, St.Stelians. We have supported them for many years and we were pleased to have them come and join us for the production of ‘Worms’ by Key Stage 1. They also received a parcel of donations gathered from our ‘green bin appeal’.

It has been another successful year and I would like to thank all of you who have helped contribute to these many projects. Your kindness has touched many lives.

Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Friends of BSB, This newsletter brings us to the end of this academic year and it celebrates all that has been challenging and exciting about the past twelve months. Reading through this collection of pictures and write ups reminds me just how much is going on every day at the school, in classrooms, around the grounds and of course the collection of field trips which have been such a success this year.

Key Stage 1 Report

Key Stage 2 Re-

We have been having a very busy term within our Key Stage.

Pupils in Year 2 have worked very hard to complete their SAT‟s papers. These tests are created in the U.K. and they are a formal assessment for pupils at the end of Key Stage 1.

We use these tests as one form of assessment to help us chart the progress made within this Key Stage. All Year 2 pupils worked really hard to complete these tests and they have achieved excellent results.

Key Stage 2 have had a very busy summer term! There have been successful residential trips for all of the year groups including my own trip with Year 6 to Venice. The children have been excellent ambassadors for the school.

Well done!

As a special treat, our Key Stage went on a trip to the forest.

We decided to try and find Barnaby Bear and his friends.

This was a fun day out after a busy week of exams. Pupils had the opportunity to hear stories being read aloud, join a treasure hunt for mini- bears and the opportunity to play a range of games. Everyone brought their packed lunch and it was a fun day out of the school and the chance to go looking for all sorts of mini-beasts and creepy crawlies!

The Sports Day was full of energy and enthusiasm by all involved, even the teachers were itching to join in! Great sportsmanship was seen by most of the participants which was fantastic to see.

Year 6 worked hard in the lead up to their SATs, and will be nervously awaiting the results in August.

This has been a hectic end to a great year! Key Stage 2 have been involved in some interesting events, and a wealth of quality learning has been achieved.

I have enjoyed my year in Bucharest, and will miss you all Key Stage 1 has also worked hard to host the production, as I make my way to the Middle East for the next stage in „Worms‟ which we believe has been a wonderful success. my journey! As we get ready to end this academic year and start a new one, we have had the opportunity to welcome the Reception classes into our Key Stage during assembly time. This has given them the chance to see and meet new teachers and pupils. Year 1 and 2 have also met with reception to share reading and play times together, in order to help make the transition into Key Stage 1 much easier. This has been a great opportunity for the children to interact together.

Lastly, it has been a pleasure to work alongside a great team of teachers and wonderful children. They have been a pleasure to teach and it is great to see how enthusiastic they are about learning more about themselves and the world around them. Although I am moving on, I wish them the best and I look forward to hearing about their progress and the wonderful things they have accomplished. A special thanks also goes to the parents who have been very supportive and worked with the Key Stage 1 team to make this a successful year, it has been greatly appreciated. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and many best wishes for the future.

Key Stage 3 & 4 Report

It is hard to believe that the year is almost at an end. Time has flown by and so much has been achieved by our students during this time. The last few weeks will be extremely hectic with so many events and trips taking place and there will be a few sad farewells to students who are leaving the British School to study elsewhere.

The Secondary School is now settled into Crawford House. The bustle of the students going to and from lessons, the chatter and the laughter really add to the school. During our first six months the students have been undergoing assessments and examinations. On Friday 13 June we said a final goodbye to our Year 11 students who have completed their IGCSEs. Nour, Tim, Matei and Alex celebrated the end of their examinations at Fattoria‟s We will say goodbye to Tim who will be returning to Germany, Matei who is going to continue his studies in the United Kingdom and a temporary goodbye to Nour and Alex who will be rejoining us in September as our first Key Stage 5 students.

This term some of our students have visited the United Kingdom on the secondary trip. They visited the many sites in London as well as spending a hectic and exhausting few days at an outdoor pursuits centre. The students remaining at school will experience their own activity week where staff put on a special programme of games, quizzes, art and music sessions and also two out of school events, inclduing bowling and possibly the water park.

The School opened its doors to parents on Tuesday 20 June. It was a beautifully sunny day and Mr Mulvany held a musical assembly in the gardens of the school. A number of students performed tunes from different musical genres and it made me very proud to listen to so many talented students in the Secondary School. I hope that this event will be repeated next year and this will give me the opportunity to invite parents in to hear the students perform.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and relaxing summer vacation and I look forward to seeing our returning BSB students on Monday 1 September.

It was this big…honest!

The BSB Fishing Trip, May 2008 It is said that the early bird catches the worm, however in practice this is rarely the case. I arrived at the Peet residence bright and early looking forward to catching big fish and having some fun. Mathieu, Jannic, and Jakob had arrived earlier and were eager to get going, I should have seen the omen looming even then.

The boys and I went off in search of worms, yet all we found were snails and two turtles sunning themselves on a tree in the nearby lake. However all was not lost, as Mr Peet found some worms digging up the earth in his garden.

Mr Peet spent the next 20 minutes or so setting up the fishing rods and off we went like the seven dwarves in search of fish. Following a short walk, everyone found their own spot to fish and began praying for tight lines.

It wasn’t long until the village heard Jannic screaming Jannic praying for a bite ‘I GOT ONE, I GOT ONE!” so that was one to Jannic.

Cries were then heard from Mathieu, Jakob and Mr Peet, alas not I.

I was trying my best ,however; the fish did not like the bread or salami purchased from Kaufland so I’ll have to go to Carrefour next time. Everyone had a fish in the bucket bar me grrrrrrrrrr. To add insult to injury, Mr Peet decided to come and fish in my area, and guess what? Yes, you guessed it fellow readers; he caught a fish, much to my irritation.

At this point Jannic decided to come and visit and fish next to me, and in no time at all Jannic began catching fish. I had had a few bites by this time, however two had got away.

And waiting and waiting and...

The fishing trip proved fruitful for Mathieu, Jakob, Jannic, Mr. Peet who all landed fish and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Unfortunately, all that I came away with was a good sun tan and memories of the fish that got away.

After returning to Mr. Peet’s house he cooked up a barbeque for everyone. Flavius and Christina also turned up to enjoy the good Peet hospitality and food. Look out for the report on our next fishing trip.

Healthy Schools Update!

It’s been another busy term, encouraging pupils of the benefits of healthy living. We have been busy in a number of areas of the school to achieve this: Staff members have offered a wide range of BSB University activities which are related to sports, including fitness, Frisbee, hockey and lifesaving. These have all been well attended and pupils have enjoyed the opportunity across Key Stage 1 & 2 to get fit and active.

Sports Day- Led by Mr Hall, pupils all had the chance to test their abilities in a wide range of sporting events. It was encouraging to see such a large turn-out and the opportunity for some parents to try some sprinting.

Sun-screen awareness- as the weather has become warmer, pupils have had the opportunity to learn about the affects of tanning and the importance of staying safe in the sun. Through circle times and PSHE lessons, pupils talked about how we can make sure we are looking after ourselves safely throughout the summer months.

DHL Run- staff members trained for a marathon relay in the mountains. This has been a good way to encourage children to also stay fit and active as they talk to their teachers about their training schedule! All money raised in this marathon goes towards, “Noi Orizonturi Familia” Association, an organization working with a number of hospitals to help impoverished children in Bucharest.

New School Heads for 2009 With the 2008 drawing to a close and our thoughts now turning toward the new academic year, we like to introduce you to the management team for 2009. If you have any questions relating to courses in either the Foundation, Primary, or Senior school, please feel free to contact the new heads or Key Stage Leaders.

Ms Angela Harvey – Head of Foundation I have worked as an educator for 13 years across the whole primary age range - as a Class Teacher, a Special Education Needs Teacher, an Early Years Coordinator, and a Primary Curriculum Coordinator. But I am happy to call myself an Early Years Specialist as that is where I have spent most of my teaching life and I have loved every minute of working with young children. I began my teaching career in England and, after a stint at backpacking, have worked in Africa (Namibia, Tanzania and Ghana) and the Middle East (Bahrain). Here I am now in Romania, about to begin my second year at the British School of Bucharest, and looking forward to continuing to work with you and your children as the Head of Foundation. I will be responsible for supporting the Teachers and Teaching Assistants as we meet the needs of the children at both Gafencu and Pipera sites. angela.harvey@britishschool.ro

Ms Jane Greenwood - Head of Secondary School I joined BSB 2 years ago as Head of Business Studies and Co-ordinator of Work Experience. I have worked in education for a number of years and have gained over 20 yearsâ€&#x; experience. My roles have been varied but the principle ones were Head of Business, Vocational and Key Skills Studies, and Co-ordinator of Post 16 Education and university applications.

Since taking up the role of Head of Secondary in January I have been kept very busy. I am looking forward to developing the Secondary School at BSB. I hope to introduce new courses into the curriculum and this year Music was added to the IGCSE courses already offered, and I am looking at the possibility of further courses the following year. In September 2008 the Secondary School will see the first Key Stage 5 students who will be starting their advanced and vocational studies and I am looking forward to working closely with the students in this new phase of their academic life. jane.greenwood@britishschool.ro

Ms Naima Hussain - Head of Primary I joined BSB four years ago as a Year One Teacher and have since held the roles of Head of Key Stage One, Head of Assessment and SENCO, among others. Next year will be my eleventh year teaching and I have previously worked with all age groups in primary from Reception to Year 6 in schools both in the UK and internationally.

Next year will see me in the newly created post of Head of Primary, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to help develop our excellent School. I am really looking forward to working with all of you next year as there are many exciting initiatives and activities planned for the new year all aimed at continuing the development in the quality of teaching and learning in the Primary School.

Ms Lindsey Banks Key Stage 1 Leader Hello I'm Lindsey Banks and I'm going to be the KS1 Leader for next year. I currently teach Year 2 (the fabulous 2B) and joined the BSB team back in August last year.

I have 9 years teaching experience and have taught in England, the UAE, Spain and America prior to my arrival in Romania. I'm excited at the prospect of managing my own department next year and look forward to working with the teachers, TA's and of course the children. Mr Patrick Kennedy - Key Stage 2 Leader Kia Ora (Hello in Maori). My name is Patrick Kennedy and next year will be my second year at BSB. I am originally from New Zealand but have taught in the British system for 7 years. I am really looking forward to developing Key Stage 2 now that we are settled into our wonderful new surroundings. Transition Day Year 6 Students get a taste of life in the Secondary School Here’s what some of the students had to say: On the 3rd of June Year 6 had its transition morning which meant that Year 6S and Year 6D went to the secondary school to have Year 7 lessons. First, we listened to Ms Greenwood‟s speech about life in the Secondary School; she said that in Secondary School everything is different and you‟ll have different teachers for each subject. After that, she left us with Mr McGowan to have a History lesson: we had to guess what place or people were on the flash cards that appeared on the interactive whiteboard. Then we headed off to the Science Lab. The teacher who teaches science is called Mr Broadhurst and he taught us about Chemistry. It is very cool because if you put some chemicals in to water , the water magically changes colour. Then we carried on to Mr Pantella, the IT teacher. In this lesson we had the chance to design a program to control a train using Flowol3. We then had our first secondary break. After break, we went to Mr John, the Maths teacher, for a lesson in Maths. We learnt all about probability with him. Finally , we went to see Mr Murchison, the English teacher and played an anagram game . When we finished, we met with Ms Greenwood again and she said told us a few more things to remember about the senior school and then the transition morning was over.

By Tobi Li, 6S Transition day was a very memorable day at BSB. The students of 6S and 6D collaborated to form one huge year 7 class. We journeyed to the notorious Secondary School and experienced wonderful lessons that gave us the feel of things.

We had a exciting brief about the lessons to come by Ms Greenwood and then jumped straight into Humanities with Mr. McGowan. After that, we had an astonishing, entertaining and informative science lesson that involved acids and test tubes. Cool! Straight after Science, we had a secondary snack time and then flashed into maths with Mr. John. After that, we plunged straight into an amazing literacy lesson with Mr.Murchison.

I personally feel very relieved as I discovered that, although the move to secondary school is a big leap, it is a manageable task and will be a great deal of fun!

By Jenne’a Pillay, 6S On Tuesday 3rd June, our Year 6 classes visited the Senior School for a morning being in Year 7. We had 30 minute lessons, as well as having the same break times as the senior students.

When we arrived there, we got to meet Ms. Greenwood and she took us to our very first lesson that morning.

I was sort-of nervous at first, but after the first and second lessons I was much more relaxed. Our first lesson (Humanities) was with Mr McGowan. He showed us a PowerPoint with pictures of different people from different times all over the world.

Our job was to guess who the person on the picture and what they did in their time.

Our second lesson was Science with Mr. Broadhurst. It was really fun because we did Chemistry, turning the liquids into different colours and back.

Then we had I.C.T. with Mr Pantella. We had to make a flow chart for a train set on the computer using Flowol 3.

After that we had snack and a break for 20 minutes.

Our next lesson was with Mr John, Maths. We did probability with the colours of gummy bear sweets and at the end of the lesson, we got to eat them!

The last lesson was Literacy with Mr. Murchison.

We had to work together on two games: one about checking a piece of writing, and on the second one we had to spell a word with jumbled-up letters.

Overall, I thought the morning was really worth it.

It was very fun because the teachers were really kind.

BSB Summer Fair was a great day enjoyed by all On Saturday 14th June our long awaited Summer Fair day had arrived. After many nervous checks on the weather forecast websites the reality of a beautiful sunny day was a welcome relief to all. Many of the parents and teachers had worked late into the evening on Friday and then had woken bright and early on Saturday morning to put the final touches to the stalls, games and stage.

The campus looked beautiful. The fluttering signs on the food stalls were bright and welcoming and the variety of foods and drinks from all different countries and cultures was a mouth watering feast for the eyes and the stomachs of all. The quantity of craft stalls from independent artists meant there was a great deal to browse through and some wonderful purchases to make.

The fair was officially underway with a bang as our wonderful MC Mr. Brian introduced the war cries from the four House teams. After that we witnessed a medley of entertainment from the pupils and staff. We had displays of karate skills, fantastic dancing, wonderful singing and some really great musicians. It was a perfect day for the talent of BSB to really show their colours.

At the back of the school campus things were a little more hectic and the fun factor was definitely high. The children all had a wonderful time running their stalls as well as taking part in all the games on offer. From Mystic Meg to the cake walk and from football tombola to tin can alley, the fun was relentless. There was plenty of messy fun with the great egg smash as well as the most talked about game of the day „Wet the Teacher‟. There were plenty of soggy teachers and happy children wandering around the fair.

Inside the school the cool and tranquil atmosphere of the music recital and the art exhibition were a relaxing contrast to the buzz outside. The art display was superb with work created by our older children as well as some of the parents taking part in the adult course. The children again showed their talents with some excellent music recitals. The children sang and played to an admiring audience throughout the afternoon.

At the end of the fair the raffle and our senior bands served as the grand finale to what was an wonderful event. The parents, staff and students involved in arranging the fair did an excellent job and everyone who came along had a wonderful day. All the money raised will go towards the schools chosen charities and towards purchasing a library of musical instruments for children to borrow and take home. The grand total so far has been 5150 euros.

I‟m Isabel from 4H and I want to say that I really enjoyed the summer fair.

It was a blast! There were stalls with food and my favourite was the one with the short-bread. There were also lots of games to try, my favourite game was Sponge the teacher; I really soaked Mr. Leese. I also bought three magazines from the „Magazine Publishing University Course‟! They were brilliant! When it was time to leave; I felt sad, but it was a great day.

The BSB Terry Fox Fun-run 2008 Terry Fox was a young Canadian who lost his life to cancer when only 22 years of age. Terry was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer when he was 19 years old and had his right leg amputated just above the knee. While in hospital he became determined to raise public awareness about cancer and to raise money to support research into finding a cure for the disease. Unfortunately Terry never lived to see his dream realised, but all over the world people continue to run and raise money in his name to keep his dream alive.

On May 1st 2008, more than 350 people gathered at the American International School for the 7th annual Bucharest Terry Fox Run. Since the run in Bucharest was started, almost $100,000 has been raised and donated to approved Mr Brian holding up a Terry Fox t-shirt Romanian cancer research projects. BSB students were encouraged to participate and our school was well represented on the day by several families and staff members, including Mr. Kennedy, Miss Banks and Mr. Mulvany!

The next Terry Fox Run will again be hosted by the American School in September 2008. Everyone is welcome to participate and it is hoped that the BSB community will continue to support this worthy event!

The Terry Fox Run…. Be part of it!

The Musings of an itinerant teacher I’m an international supply teacher of science who roams the world filling in for staff who are on long term leave or when schools lose a teacher suddenly, as did BSB when Jeanette Irish returned home to have a baby.

I arrived in Bucharest on the Sunday afternoon of February 11th with snow on the ground and a temperature of -1º Celsius. I’d just spent the last term in Bangkok and the previously in Penang, Malaysia so my body was not acclimatised to the cold. A rude shock!

It was with some trepidation that I began teaching in the new lab the following morning but as I have found in all the international schools I’ve taught in, the students were wonderful and made me feel very much at home straight away.

I found Bucharest to be a fascinating place, full of history and magnificent buildings of bewildering and eclectic architectural designs.

My passion is taking photographs of people and places and Bucharest has been a fertile ground for this. I love churches especially as they are often filled with beautiful art work and iconery and no more so than in Bucharest. I think I’ve visited just about every church within a radius of five kilometers of Piata University, but of all, I found the Stavropolos Church on Str. Franchesa to be the most fascinating. Also a trip to Mogosoia Palace was most rewarding on finding the Statue of Lenin lying among the weeds just outside the walls, having been torn down after the 1989 revolution.

It is pictures like this I take away with me when I journey home to New Zealand, this and the memory of wonderful students, a friendly staff and trips into the Romanian countryside. Who knows where I’ll be next term? I’ll just wait for that email that says, “Can you be in Rio in three weeks?”… and then its off again on another adventure!

BSB Women’s Team surprise men in DHL Marathon This year BSB was lucky enough to send two teams of teachers to run in the DHL Charity fundraising marathon, Saturday June 21st. In the women‟s team the six runners were, in order of the run: Sarah Douglas (1D; also completing the 1/2 marathon), Ms Lyndsey Marcu (1M), Ms Alison Loeper (2L), Ms Naima Hussain (SEN), Ms Deanna Beggs (RC), and Ms Sarah Snocken(6S). In the men‟s team, in order, were Mr Patrick Kennedy (4K; also running the 1/2 marathon), Mr Sonny Leese (3L), Walter Maracineanu (ICT), Mr Stefan Jipa (ICT), Mr Brad Hamacher (4H), and Mr Kendall Peet (EAL).

The race started at 10am and the women went out strong with Sara Douglas coming in ahead of Mr Kennedy. Ms Lyndsey Marcu continued to extend the women‟s team‟s lead take advantage of the fact that Mr Lesse is a late riser. In Stage 3 Ms Alison Loeper put in a fantastic performance out-running Mr Maracineanu to give the women an incredible 11 minute lead after just 3 stages. It was clear that the men were in trouble as Ms Hussain said goodbye to a rather stunned Mr Jipa and headed off on Leg 4 of the race. Unfortunately Mr Jipa could do little to peg back the time as Ms Hussain powered her way up one of the most difficult sections of the race, gaining yet more time on the men. It was the Herculean effort of Mr Hamacher in the 5th leg, going completely ballistic and running hard up a very tough incline to steal back 11 minutes from what was a very good performance from Ms Beggs, that placed Mr Peet in the position to be able to steal victory from the women‟s team, passing Ms Snocken half way into the final stage. In all respects is was a great race and a great day had by all. The final times and placings: Patrick Kennedy 21km 2.00.23 40th/66 Men’s team 42km 3.55.43 25th/37 Women’s team 42km 4.15.34 7th/8

“Saturday 21st July will be forever remembered as a day of Fun, Running, Torture and Tiredness!

It was the first time that I had participated in any kind of sporting competition and I enjoyed myself immensely. I had the honour of being the final BSB woman to cross the line, and managed to do so with a final sprint! Although very red in the face, hot, and sweaty, I finished my section in 55 minutes.

Everyone ran really well and it was great to end the year with this event. It has given me a new respect for marathon runners, and I'm already planning my next run!”

Year 11 Farewell Celebration The final IGCSE examination for our Year 11 students was held on June 12th and now we say a fond farewell to them, though not a final one for all the students. Both Alex Prodan and Nour Chehab will be returning to the British School in September when they become our first Year 12 students to continue on to further studies next year. Tim Oldag will return to a school in Germany and Matei Coltan will begin his studies in the UK. Both Secondary staff and students wish them success and hope that they will visit us when they return to Bucharest.

The students decided to celebrate the end of the Key Stage 4 studies with a meal at Fattoria‟s on the lake, where they were accompanied by their partners.

We were sorry not to be able to celebrate this with Alex who had flown out to watch the Romania/Italy football match. The students asked Mr John, their form tutor, to join the party, along with Mr Pantella and Mr Murchison.

It is always sad to say goodbye, though I suspect we will be hearing from Tim and Matei and their adventures in the near future, and I look forward to welcoming back Alex and Nour in September.

Play on Maestro…...

On May 21st Key Stage 3 enjoyed a special program on world music Latin, Jazz and its roots in Africa, the Caribbean and in South America. The students participated in the assembly using Percussion instruments, keyboards, a piano, and guitars.

The first student to perform a solo piece was Seung-Yong Myung, who performed “Do You?’’ and then a 12 Bars Blues song with the whole class. Her performance was fluent and wonderful.

Next came a young man with excellent keyboard skills, Ambroise Gleron, who did a chilling interpretation of the James Bond theme.

The students from Year 7 together performed a percussion ensemble piece called Steel Calypso, featuring percussion instruments from around the world and they did an excellent job. Well done Year 7.

Even though the wire manipulation was quite hard and painful I found the experience and the final product very rewarding.”

Maria Santiago, Year 10 “There were lots of things that I enjoyed and learnt about in art this year, but what surprised me most was how I was able to transform simple everyday things like string and paper into something sculptural like my pot which I think is quite special.”

Andreea Prasacu, Year 9 “This was my first year at BSB and the Art lessons were one of my favourite. We did all kinds of projects from 2D to 3D and researched many artists. I really enjoyed learning about the different artists like William Morris and looking at their life and work.”

We did Mask making and made some pretty great masks, my favourite thing was being able to use my imagination and realizing my ideas.”

University Courses BSB University– End of Year Report In line with the National Curriculum‟s initiative towards 25% of the timetable being devoted towards „personalised learning‟, our weekly university courses have again proved to be extremely popular with both pupils and teachers. As always the courses offered have covered all areas of the curriculum and in many cases have indeed been cross curricular. The courses that have been offered this year have ranged from learning Italian to planning a dinner party and also playing the guitar, to life saving and First Aid skills. When the university restarts again in September we hope to offer an even wider range of courses and I would warmly welcome any parent who wishes to share their expertise with our pupils. If you would like to get involved with our university programme please do not hesitate to contact me either during the summer or at the start of the new term. Finally my thanks must go to all the staff and parents for their hard work and enthusiasm with our university courses through out the year.

University Cooking Course

I like cooking because it is fun and yummy. In our course we cooked a tasty fruit cake. In the next week we did pizza. It was delicious…first we had to make flat dough, after we smeared it with sweet tomato sauce, then we had to put vegetables (green pepper, mushrooms and olives), pepperoni and chicken breast. In the end we put it in the oven and then we ate it at lunch. I like cooking!

Alex Pitulea, 5T This term I got cooking as my first choice. We made a delicious fruit cake. The following week we made pizza! I really enjoy cooking because it is fun and I get to learn lots of mouth-watering recipes and to develop my cooking skills. Cooking has been really fun and exciting and I can not wait until next week when we‟ll be doing pancakes.

Then we went outside and we made a big apple from cardboard but we couldn‟t finish it so we finished it the second lesson. Then the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th lessons began to be cooler. We did many cool things and we had so much fun!

Live Saving and First-Aid university course

This term at the university I got my second choice that was Life Saving and First-Aid University course. On the first day I thought it would be boring, but I was wrong. Every day we went to the pool, ok nearly every day. There was a day when just Mister Brian entered the water as the water was too cold. On the last day we had assessments and I think I was one of the best. I liked my university very much and I would like to try new things at this school.

Cezar, 5T Cezar, Andrew, Naomi and the rest of the life saving group with Mr. Brian As everybody knows, university has been taking place on Wednesday; it was organized by Mr. Davidson. I had life saving and first aid. It was with Mr. Brian and we got to go in into the swimming pool. Only people who knew how to swim could enter this university course. We learnt what to do to save someone from somewhere and do the right things. We learnt how to put someone in the safety jump in which you need to not put your head into the water to keep looking at the person if they are in danger and you can‟t see them any more. We also learnt the Side Stable Position, to keep someone in place so that we know that their airway is open. Why don't you have a go at it?

I did the Kite Making Course with Mr. Kennedy. We decided to build kites. I worked with Greta and Clothilde.

I liked building the kite. My kite looks like a diamond. I had a lot of fun in kite making. I enjoyed the whole course. The best thing was flying the kite. The worst thing was that my kite broke.

University Rowing Course In my university course I have been trying to achieve the target of rowing around the world together with Mesar, Rashid and Mr. Hall. Altogether you would have to row about 55,000km to row around the world once, but because this would take far too long we narrowed it down to 55,000m. When we finish the hard target we (the 3 of us) will all get a medal from the company C2! In addition to rowing we also had to work out the calculations of how far we have to row every time to achieve our target in time. Its great fun!

Guided Reading Course The best part of it was when we found adjectives. When we read a story and when we were reading a page from a stage book. Clara, 2L In Reading and Writing, I liked the book Rescue! It was about a girl that saved the boat. I liked it when we did the adjectives. Elad, 2L I liked we Stone Lion. We made adjectives and when we read a book The Star we had a lot of fun. I also liked it when we did a spelling test. Eldan, 2L In term 3 we‟ve chosen some University courses, my University course was Guitar for Beginners with Mr. Jonathan Crispin. During this event we‟ve learnt some cords and some songs. I‟ve enjoyed this course a lot; I‟d like to join this course again next year if there is one. It would be better if we had more time (we only had 5 weeks because of our Italy trip.) I recommend this course to everyone who likes music I am sure that you‟ll learn a lot and also enjoy this course. If you don‟t have a guitar at home Mr. Mulvany kindly lets you take one home to practice.

Senior School in the Spotlight!

Alvaro Gil Diez is in Year 10. He is from the north of Spain– a little town called Santander, where he lives with his family. He has a brother called Gaime, who is 21 and at university. He likes all types of music and eating Italian food, especially pasta. His favourite holiday destination is the Greek islands. This summer he is looking forward to returning to his home town to meet up with old friends. The best part about this year was getting a new Ipod.



Constance Pillet is currently in Year 7. She comes from a large family with 3 brothers and 2 sisters, which she says she likes a lot. Her favourite holiday destination is Tuscany, in the Northwest of Italy so naturally her favourite type of food is Italian. This summer she is planning to go to Leon in the north of France and to Versailles. Her favourite thing about this year is going to Teresa’s birthday party. Next year she is returning to the south of France to live in Toulouse.

Roei Shimony is in Year 8. He is from Israel and has two younger brothers, aged 9 and 6. His favourite holiday destination is the USA. He is planning to got to Antalya, Turkey for his holiday and maybe to Israel before returning to school in Bucharest. The best part about this year for Roei is activity week. His favourite food is Lebanese.



Isabella Werner is in Year 10. She comes from Austria and she likes comics, sports, computers and movies. Her favourite sports are climbing, skiing, and karate. Her favourite subject is PE. Her favourite movie is “Beim Ersten Mal”. She likes Romania. During the holidays she is going to Austria to visit her friends and to climb. She has a smaller sister. She is going on the school trip to London and hopes it will be a great trip.

Maria Lemne is in Year 9 and has a sister, Ana (8), in the Primary School. Her favourite music is Rap– she would love to go to a Lincoln Park concert. Her favourite holiday destination is Toronto, Canada. This summer she is holidaying with her family in both Italy and Greece. The best thing about 2008 for Maria is swimming in the school swimming pool this summer. Her favourite food is fast food– especially burghers.



Louis Meuli is in Year 7. The best thing that happened this year was making friends and going sailing. His plans for the summer are to return to Italy. His favourite mall is the new Baneasa Shopping Centre. His hobbies are sailing, playing football, playing tennis, and rugby. He prefers cities by the sea: his favourite city is Lecce, situated in the south of Italy, in the region of Apulia (40°21′N 18°10′E). He really looks forward to the next football World Cup. Mr Murchison is the Head of the English Department. He thinks the best thing that happened to him is that the school finally settled. He plans to go to Canada and other non disclosed places. Mr Murchison doesn’t like malls because they ruin the traditional culture. His hobbies are reading, writing, almost every kind of sport and adventure. He likes Bucharest and his favourite city is summer side Prince Edward Island. Some of the favourite things he did are learning to paraglide, becoming a teacher, living in Africa, a school trip in Serengeti and winning rugby and football championships. He lives in the present and does not like looking into the future, however, he is still looking forward to he trips in London and Canada. He also likes pleasant surprises.

BSB Team Building Staff BBQ Lots of the staff had a great evening at the BSB BBQ. Music was provided by the hugely talented Johnny Casino band (Mr Brian on Vocals, Mr Mulvany on drums) with guest appearances from Mr Crispin and Miss Banks on the tambourines. A huge thank you to Mr Peet and Mr Broadhurst for slaving away on the BBQ for the whole evening – who says that the French have the best chefs – come on New Zealand!

A few members of the staff, some voluntarily, others less so (Ooh la la, Ms Renaudin!), enjoyed a dip in the school pool. All in all the whole evening was a great success. A big thank you to Ms Banks for organising the event. We look forward to the next one.

BSB Drama Drama Drama BSB Drama is an important part of the Britich Curriculum and BSB work hard to ensure that the students at BSB have the opportunity to express themselves dramatically within their course of studies. It is not the aim of the Drama Department to turn children into actors, but to contribute to their harmonious development, within a society that needs healthy individuals.

During their Drama sessions, the children benefit from intensive learning through playing: acting games are meant to develop and improve fluent speech, vocabulary, communication skills, problem solving abilities, team playing, self confidence, and the ability to speak in front of peers. Through role play children recreate and experience different kinds of enviroments. This aspect develops abstract thinking, which is an essential skill in problem solving.

For older children, Drama traces the boundaries of a paralled reality where all socially forbidden gestures are allowed and even encouraged. It is the safe way to experience harmful situations and their consequences, without actually getting hurt: inside what we call a “convention”.

Year 8 production: ‘The Time Machine’ This is a play I wrote a long time ago and it is aimed to be performed by professional actors. It is about children with big dreams who grow up into adults who have forgotten how to dream; metaphorically, the travel through time represents the loss of innocence.

When the children from Year 8, May Chemais, Teresa Lainer, Louisa Dascalescu, Andrea Micodin and Constance Pillet, joined my Drama Club, I saw a lot of potential in them and I was very impressed by their desire to take part in an actual theatre play.

Marilyn (May Chemais) reciting Hamlet's monologue to Emily (Andrea Micodin) and Therefore, I adapted the play to the number of Alberta (Louisa Dascalescu) characters available and I started rehearsals in January. The children worked hard and the process was a lengthy one, mainly because we had one hour a week at our disposal, and also because I asked a lot from the children. I actually found myself explaining things to them the way a stage director would to professional actors, and I am proud to say that not only did they understand my requests, but, on some occasions, they exceeded my expectations. It is really about how high you set the standards; and considering the fact that they are Year 8 students who had to respond to tasks of professional level, I can say that they did very well.

BSB Eco News After a successful Eco-Day on the 17th March, eco-members got the chance to share with their class, their very own garden plant. Each class were able to pot their own plants and take care of it using the tools bought with our eco-money.

Classes have been looking after their plant pot and they can be found throughout the school grounds. A special well done has to go to Foundation Stage for taking care of their plants so nicely!

Eco-members continue to meet monthly to discuss areas for improvement and what needs to be developed within the school. The following suggestions were given to help improve the school: Annual Eco-Day Collect litter day or the opportunity to help clean up the local forest or park.

BSB Sports Day Despite a difficult beginning for the 2007-2008 PE Department, the resources have continued to increase and improve and stability has been maintained since January. In addition to these improvements, there will be some exciting new developments for 2008-2009, both in terms of equipment and curriculum content. Reflecting on the past 12 months and as this will be my last entry into the BSB Newsblast, it is important to thank all the pupils for their flexibility as their surroundings changed and for helping me to make the most of what was available at particular times. I am confident that the ground work that has been achieved this year will see the PE Department develop, strengthen and grow throughout the next academic year and beyond. I wish my successors the very best of luck in this endeavour and I will leave with fond memories of my Romanian experience. For those pupils that are remaining at BSB next year, I hope that you can continue to enjoy and develop your sporting abilities. For those pupils that will be moving on, I wish you the very best of luck and hope that you will settle into your new schools quickly.

Concept 2 Indoor Rowing League: Final Round UK Ranking Results The boys and girls were outstanding and their results reflect their energy and enthusiasm to a sport that was totally new to them. Year 2 Trip to the Zoo

Year 2 went to the Bucharest Zoo as part of their Animals and Habitats Science project. They had a wonderful time wandering around the enclosures finding out about all the different animals. The highlight for many was the lion who roared so loud we could hear him from across the whole park!!

The Year 2's are hoping to go on another school trip to the Natural History museum in Bucharest, to see the dinosaur display there.

The 6 and 7 year olds are currently investigating dinosaurs as part of their topic unit.

Year 3 Trip to Sinaia On the 5th June 2008 Year Three went to Sinaia for two days. It was a bit tiring on the coach but finally we arrived. Each of us had a partner to sleep with - my partner was Alex Gogos. Mr. Leese told us to change for the walk. We went a bit on the coach to go high on the mountain but Ms Ramona heard that a woman had just fed a bear. So we went a bit further down and then we ate our packed lunch. Ms Ramona called the coach and when it arrived we went to the top. I liked it when we ate the buffet in the evening because there were different foods. The next day we visited Peles castle and went shopping. My favourite thing was the walk because we saw lots of nature. I needed to sleep after that big day.

Year 4 Trip to Poiana Brasov On the 16th of June, we set of to Poiana Brasov.The bus journey was long and hot. It felt like heaven when we stopped for lunch. When we finally got to the resort (four stars) we galloped straight to our rooms.

After we unpacked, we rested for about 30 minutes and then we went to the local stalls to buy souvenirs.

When we arrived back, we started preparing for swimming at the hotel’s pool. We quickly grabbed our towels, put on our swimsuits and goggles.

The next day, after breakfast (I had a great meal of Nesquik cereal, sausages and salami) we headed for the teleferic to climb the mountain. When we reached the top, we split into our teams and we played an adventure game. In the game our teams had to work out some clues to find letters then jumble them up to make a word (that answered a riddle). The answer was angle (I know that because my team won).

We had lunch on the mountain and afterwards a 3 hour climb down the mountain. It was exhausting but the satisfaction that we made it in the end was bigger than anything that could be described.

That night we had a wonderful camp fire. We roasted marshmallows on sticks, sung songs, told stories and played games… basically we had a great time!

The next day included packing, because we were supposed to head back to Bucharest (I’ll miss you Poiana Brasov)! After a couple of minutes, we stopped to shop.

But I have to admit, it was the best trip ever!

Year 5 Trip to Moeciu de sus On Monday the 2nd of June, Year 5 had a long, tiring journey to Moeciu de sus. When we arrived every one was bored and tired, we got to know our rooms and room mates. The teachers: Ms Tyler, Mr Brian, Mr Jonathan and Miss Catalina had arranged a shake-down walk. On the walk Mr Brian stopped us a few times and told us some interesting facts. Then we came back and had a steaming hot plate of French fries for dinner. Yummy!!!

The next day, Mr Brian tortured us by making us hike all the way to Fundata, (a village close to Moeciu de sus). It was exhausting but we learned a few useful things e.g. People take care of their land and are very aware of people on the land, some types of flowers grow more at the lower side of the mountain rather than all over and Fundata is a very traditional place. Then we hiked back and had a long horse and carts ride.

On Wednesday, we had an all you can eat breakfast then went on another hike. This time believe it or not Ms Tyler was first. We killed ourselves by going on the hike, ouch! Then we had some lovely ice cream and danced! We had a house football tournament as well.

On Thursday Mr Brian, Mr Jonathan, Ms Tyler and Ms Catalina took us to Rasnov. We went to do archery, pottery and sculpting. Rasnov is a very old and interesting place. We had lunch at Rasnov. It was cool!!! We even went shopping!!! From the top there was a beautiful view.

On Friday we were super sad because we had to complete our packing and… and… and… LEAVE!!! WAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

We all came back with amazing times to share and thankfully in one piece!!!!

Whacky Hair Day Wow, wacky hair day was one of the best days I have ever had because it wasn’t only WACKY hair day, it was also a NON school uniform day. Most of the children put some colour hair spray on their hair (It looked fantastic). A lot of teachers also put some fake hair, for example Mr. Davidson; he wore a spiky red, orange, green and yellow wig.

One of the best things that happened on that morning was that most children were amazed at nearly all the hair styles children wore, some spiky some curly and even some messy hair. The whole school looked crazy with crazy hair styles running around the playgrounds.

In my opinion, most of the students had a good time looking at and having Wacky hair! I think most children wish we could have Crazy Hair Day more often.

Alejandra Carolina Velasco Mesina, 6D On Friday it was wacky hair day (we could also wear home clothes) It was a blast! Some people put spray paint on their hair, some had totally wacky hair! Some children didn’t have wacky hair so they only wore home clothes. The day was totally awesome! It was so cool looking at other children’s hair. I made my hair stand up with extra strong gel and then I painted them with different colours. Wacky hair day was the BEST!!!!!!!!!!

The Last of the Mohicans...

Year 6 Trip to Venice On Monday the 9th of June, Year 6 left Bucharest on an exciting trip to Venice, Italy! While we were there we had interesting Italian lessons, in addition to learning the terrific language with Michelle the tour guides daughter we also spent some time decorating some plain white t-shirts with unique and creative designs.

On the trip we also went to the beach where we found lots of shells, crabs and jellyfish.

The hotel we stayed at was called The Old River Hotel. The hotel had a big pool and a lot of space to relax! Old River Hotel is located in the suburbs of Venice so we didn’t spend all the time in the centre of Venice, Instead we spent most of our time at the beach, going to the pool, chilling out at the hotel, doing our booklets or decorating the t-shirts!

Y6 in Venice with the mystery man When we did go to Venice on Tuesday we went to lots of different shops and ate enormous, delicious ice-creams! In Venice we also went to see a glass blower who made a Milan dark blue and green horse in a very short time!

On Thursday we went to see some famous runes which consisted of some large pieces of rock in a field, an underground house and a beautiful, historic church., On the plane on the way back Eda who was very tired (as were the rest of us) fell asleep with her mouth wide open and her head pointing upwards, it was HILAROUS! Natalie Beckett, 6S It’s hard to believe it’s over. The trip was fantastic! On Sunday 8th June we all gathered around the Baneasa airport, near the white statue. We then set off to Italy with the airline called My Air. On the plane I sat next to Naomi and next to Naomi was Iris. As soon as we arrived to the hotel called Old River hotel we went to our rooms and fell asleep.

Next day we had two Italian lessons and we went to the pool and the beach where we looked for shells, we even found crabs too!

On Tuesday we woke up early and set off to the train station to go to Venice. In Venice we saw the bridge of screams. Its name was given as the bridge of screams because near the bridge was a prison, and when the water level rose, the prisoners used to drown and scream. You could hear their screams from the bridge which was given the name the bridge of screams.

On Wednesday we stayed at the hotel and went to the pool where we then played 10 pin bowling. On the afternoon we were going to the beach but before that we phoned our parents. After phoning home and having a chat it started to rain!

Instead of going to the beach we went back to the hotel and had some more Italian lessons and we also did some designs on some white t-shirts.

Thursday was a very busy day, we went to see some Ancient Romans ruins and did some shopping. After all of that we went to a pizzeria and ate the most wonderful delicious pizza ever! When we arrived back to the hotel we celebrated one of our Italian tour guide’s (Michelle) birthday.

We even sang happy birthday in our language to her.

As for Friday it was named as the leaving day. We woke up at 3 am and set off back to the airport where we then came back to Bucharest.

Year 10 German look at Careers and Jobs Year 10 students have been looking at the topic of Careers and Jobs over the last term in German. What better way to learn about jobs, than by talking to established professionals? This is why we invited Mrs Flavia Teodosiu to talk about her job. Apart from being a fluent speaker of German, Mrs Teodosiu is a very successful attorney and owns a law office in Bucharest. She is the mother of Flavius in Year 10. In the following interview, she is answering questions about her daily routine as a lawyer and about her leisure time. She also explains why her German is so good.

Ein Anwalt macht viele Dinge. Er geht zum Beispiel vor Gericht, um seine Kunden zu verteidigen, er telefoniert mit Kunden und betreut sie. Ein Anwalt studiert auch die Gesetze, weil er die Kunden richtig beraten muss, und weil er die aktuellen Gesetze kennen muss, wenn er seine Kunden verteidigt.

Wie finden Sie Ihren Job? Ich finde meinen Beruf echt klasse und spannend. Meine Arbeit als Anwältin macht mir Spaß.

Was war Ihr interessantester Fall?

Mein interessantester Fall war mit einer Zementfabrik. Eine Firma aus Deutschland hat die Zementfabrik gekauft. Es gab viele Schwierigkeiten, aber ich möchte jetzt nicht ins Detail gehen. (Sie erklärt den Unterschied zwishen physischen und juridischen Personen und die verschiedenen Sorten von Gesellschaften: GmbH, AG usw) Wie viel Stunden bleiben Ihnen für Hausarbeit?

Mir bleibt keine Zeit für Hausarbeit, weil ich beruflich sehr beschäftigt bin. Ich koche manchmal, wenn mein Sohn darauf besteht (sie lacht).

Wo arbeiten Sie? Ich arbeite im Gericht oder in meiner eigenen Kanzlei. Die Kanzlei trägt meinen Namen, Flavia Teodosiu.

Mögen Sie Ihren Beruf?

Ich mag meinen Beruf, weil er interessant ist und weil es nie langweilig ist.

Ja, ich möchte, dass mein Sohn Anwalt wird. Das ist mein Traum.

Warum sind Sie Anwältin geworden?

Es ist eine Tradition in meiner Familie, mein Vater und meine Mutter waren beide Anwälte und mein Großvater auch.

Um wie viel Uhr fangen Sie mit Ihrer Arbeit an?

Ein Anwalt hat normalerweise kein festes Programm, aber wenn ich vor Gericht gehen muss, stehe ich früh morgens auf und gehe zur Arbeit um 8 Uhr. Ansonsten beginnt mein Arbeitstag etwas später, so um 9 oder 10.

Wie verstehen Sie sich mit Ihren Kollegen?

Ich verstehe mich gut mit meinen sechs Kollegen und ich finde sie lustig und höflich.

Was machen Sie in Ihrer Freizeit?

In meiner Freizeit gehe ich gern schwimmen, aber leider selten. Ich gehe zu Partys, und ich verbringe Zeit mit meinem Sohn.

Ich habe Jura studiert. Davor, habe ich die Deutsche Schule aus Bukarest besucht.

Wie lange haben Sie Deutsch gelernt?

Mit zwei Jahren habe ich begonnen, Deutsch zu lernen.

Also haben Sie zuerst Deutsch und dann Rumänisch gelernt?

Ja, richtig. Rumänisch habe ich erst später gesprochen. Ich muss auch sagen, dass mir die deutsche Sprache viele Türen geöffnet hat. Ich wäre beruflich nicht so weit gekommen, wenn ich kein Deutsch gesprochen hätte.

In March our Preschool class learned about animals that come from eggs and the names of some baby animals. In May we explored the farm, jungle and African savannah to see what sorts of animals we could find. In May we looked at smaller living things such as insects, amphibians, and plants. We then enjoyed a „Bearsâ€&#x; theme, learning about real bears and teddy bears.

Year 1 1D The last term of year 1 has been spent learning about sea sides. The unit began by discussing our own seaside holidays and the characteristics of coastal areas. Students enjoyed reading stories, poems, and non-fiction texts about sea sides around the world, and then used this information to write postcards from our favourite seaside place. After learning about maps and legends during our Local Area unit, students were able to examine a resort area and create a legend to label the map. We also discussed the sights, sounds, smells, and textures that we would find at the seaside and created paintings and collages based on this.

We were also very fortunate to have a lesson in the Science Lab with Mr David Broadhurst, the secondary science teacher. In relation to our Pushes and Pulls unit, Mr Broadhurst taught Year 1 about how we measure force, and how the amount of force we need to move something depends on different factors, such as the surface. The students loved exploring the lab and using the science equipment.

We finished off the year by preparing for numerous school activities, such as collecting candy for our Summer Fair candy jar, rehearsing for our summer production, and practicing our math skills for Math Day. The students have been inspired by the newsletters around the school to start writing their own news about the exciting activities that happen in Year 1. Thank you to all the parents who helped to support us throughout the year. Enjoy your summer holidays!

1M We have been having super fun in our classroom this term as he have been writing our own fantasy stories! We loved reading about all sorts of monsters and we created our very own monster Island where Bram and Enzo using their our character, „Stitch‟ lives. counting skills in Maths On our Island we made our own legend so that we could recognise where everything was. This was a direct link to our Geography topic.

We loved making our own maps and we hid things in our playground for our friends to try and find using our map and the letter „X‟ to mark the treasure!

Our class has also had a lot of fun within Maths. We practiced our estimating and counting skills and made our own games to play with each other. We have also enjoyed many activities outside the classroom, such as Sports Day. Most of our class went to Sports Day and we had a lot of fun running on the track. Some of us are happy that Arges won and some of us are disappointed that our team did not win, but we had a good time.

Year 2L

2L has had an eventful and exciting term! SATS were a major challenge which all of 2L tackled with enthusiasm. Apart from this academic challenge, students have eagerly begun learning about dinosaurs and exploring this subject through fact books, comparing heights and sizes of these prehistoric beasts and creating their own. The building of dinosaurs, out of odds and ends, proved to be a terrific learning experience in which creativity was plentiful. Their base knowledge of this subject was impressive, and it continues to grow. Becoming palaeontologists was a highlight when students created their own fossil impressions out of clay as well as carefully excavated hidden bones. Outside of dinosaurs, 2L has been fortunate to experience a forest walk during our Barnaby Bear Picnic as well as a trip to the Museum of Natural History. Year 2L is keen to continue learning and begin Year 3!

Year 2B 2B have been studying Dinosaurs as part of their Topic subject this term.

The children have made individual dinosaur models and this week designed and constructed a HUGE class model dinosaur! The dinosaur has been made from scrap materials.

To make the model more realistic, 2B hard at work on their dinosaur 2B Class photo 2B are covering the frame with papier -mâché and then they are going to paint it. It's going to look gggrrreat! Watch out for 2B's Long Neck dinosaur around the Primary school. It's so big we may have problems getting it out of the classroom!

Year 3L

This term we have been very busy. We have been doing lots of investigative work with plants. We discovered that if you cut the leaves off a plant it will grow less than a plant with leaves (and the leaves will grow back!). In another investigation, we put cress seeds in a cupboard, some in the fridge, some on a sunny windowsill, and some far away from the window. We discovered that plants need light, warmth, air, and water to grow well. We also learnt how to repot a plant and all about photosynthesis.

We also performed our own Viking play about the death of a Viking God called Balder. In ICT we have learnt how to make and present slide shows for the other children to learn from.

In the Summer Fair we had a „Human Fruit Machine‟. In this game there were three people sitting on chairs. When the –player said 3...2…1...FRUIT, the 3 people picked up a piece of fruit. If you had 3 fruit that were the same you won a prize. We also sang some songs for the children and our parents. We had a great day.

We are excited to go on to Year 4 next year, but will be sad to see some of our friends leaving.

Year 3B

Well another busy term for 3B has almost been completed. 3B have had another successfully assembly thanks to all my lovely foxes in Fantastic Mr Fox, we had great fun. This term we have looked at play scripts and poetry in Literacy, we have discovered fractions and our timestables in Numeracy – hope you all know them off by heart! Science we have investigated plants and we have also been doing lots of different art projects.

We have also enjoyed the sunshine this term taking our books outside to read in the fresh air.

Hi, my name is Mohammed and I want to tell you about 4H‟s amazing Assembly‟s this year. We started off in December with a special version of „The 12 days of Christmas‟, and some winter poems, stories and jokes. After that we had an amazing feast where all our parents brought in special food from our different cultures…Yummy!

Year 4H

During our second assembly in February we wrote and performed play scripts. This was a lot of work as we had to memorize all of our lines, and some of us were in 3 different plays.

Our last assembly was in May and it was our best yet. We performed songs that we had learned with Mr Mulvaney, played, drums, displayed power point presentations and had a few skits. Our topic was all about saving the planet and we focused on alternative fuels.

Throughout all of the assemblies Mr Hamacher demanded that we do our best and I feel that we did a great job.

What Liria and Marie liked on Science Day

Wow, school in a huge house! We started in a tiny space and now we have a swimming pool, tennis court and giant classrooms. My favourite part of this term was the co-operative games with Mr Hamacher. It was a delight for 4K and to 4H to have an opportunity to play games that involve team work.

Everyone loved Science Day because it was a special day where we could mess about and do wacky experiments like when Mr. Kennedy tried to lift me off my feet with the solar air ship. Wacky hair day was also a fun because we could come to school without our school uniforms. During the summer fair my favorite stand was „Wet the Teacher‟. Our biggest challenge this year was the SAT‟s because we had to think our hardest and it lasted for a whole week. However, we all feel that our hard work led to great success. We loved term three and we hope you did too.

On Science Day, we did activities, we experimented and these are some of the things we experimented with: sinking and floating, airships, and parachutes. We went up to Mr Hamacher’s room, tied a plastic cup full of water to a parachute and let it go down to see if it floated in the air, and gently landed. We also did some activities: bubble making, rocket ships and exploding water balloons. We were also given a plastic bag with a magnifying glass and a little special box with a magnifying glass on the lid to see bugs in at a bigger size. We were meant to find bugs and each bug you found, you were given some points. This is what we found: a bee, an aphid, and a grasshopper.

Year 5B Hey, is that the time? Are we having fun yet??

This year seems to have flown by, with so many things packed in it‟s a wonder we managed to survive at all. A highlight of the year was of course was the Outdoor Education Trip to Moiceu de Sus, the central idea of which was: “In order to grow as a person, you have to recognize, face and overcome personal and professional challenges, individually and collectively”.

In fact this central idea has been a theme that has run throughout all units and activities this year. For some of us in 5B the challenges have been academic, as we struggled to understand new concepts in maths or literacy.

For others, the challenges have been of a social nature, as we faced up to our responsibilities as members of a cooperative community of learners.

The journey has not been easy for any of us, but we can all feel pleased and proud of the successes we have shared this year.

5B takes this opportunity to wish all members of the BSB community a restful and rewarding summer and we extend best wishes to all those who are moving on to new challenges next 5T students forming a 5 as a final thank you and year. farewell to Mr Brian, who is returning to Australia with his family after 8 years in teaching in Romania.

Making Tapestries

Our Art topic was Talking Textiles. These are tapestries that tell a story. In groups we discussed different stories and ideas we could use to make a tapestry. Each group picked a story to illustrate. We then sketched our idea. When we were happy with the sketch we created a bigger example to help us with the scale of the drawings.

We then drew our completed drawing on the tapestry. Afterwards we carefully painted it. Our tapestries are all about different things, there are Jack and the Beanstalk, The 100 Year War, The Trojan War and a Romanian tapestry.

Year 6D

Since the April holidays, we have been focusing and working on SATs. We have SATs exams in Mathematics, Literacy and Science. There was an after school Mathematics club on Monday, Literacy club on Wednesday and a Science club on Thursday.

Since SATS are over, we have worked mostly on Geography - rivers. We have been learning about meanders, the mouth, oxbow lakes, etc. We are also making magazines, which need to include a cover, an autobiography, a graph, and news article, a background of our theme, an experiment, games or activities, advertisements, a story, and any other things we can think of. All of them must be about our theme.

Year 6S I spent a terrific time in year 6, with Ms Snocken and my class mates. I think I learned a lot of useful things with Miss Snocken and also with many other teachers as well.

The best thing that happened in year 6 was the whole year because we made new friends, we had fun, we went to Venice, and SATs are over!

Also Ms Snocken helped a lot with our SATs, even though they were boring it still helped. One of the worst things in year 6 were the exams obviously.) But when we did our exams we weren't that stressed because we were used to doing them because we practiced. Now the exams are over we don't have much to worry about.

We had fun at the beach, in the pool and everywhere. The funniest bit was when I got thrown in the pool by Mr Davidson! Another reason I loved the trip was because we were somewhere awesome and we did not have work! I spent I really good time in Year 6 and I hope the next year will be just as fun as this year.

Gifted and Talented BSBâ€&#x;s gifted and talented group have been meeting up every Thursday after school forming small companies. We had to elect a Managing Director and all the other positions that a small company would have. We had to decide what products we wanted to sell, and have been talking about marketing and how to make sell our products.

Our Bank Manager (Ms Wells) gave us tips and money so that we could go out and buy the things that we needed to make our products. This covered Numeracy, literacy, art and helped to improve our discussion techniques. We sold our products and the winning company got a prize for making the most profit. Only one company made a loss. This was a great fun activity and we learnt a lot!

Key Stage 1 & 2 students experiment on BSB’s ‘Science Day’ It was Key Stage 1's Science Day on 11th April and we all had a wonderful time. Years 1 and 2 took part in Science activities for the whole day. The teachers' operated Science Stations around the school grounds, each involving a different science activity. Some of the activities involved launching hand-made rockets, investigating floating/sinking, water music, liquid races and static electricity races. Both teachers and students had a great time as they worked their way around the stations exploring, investigating and discovering!

In fact the day was such a success that Miss Banks, the Primary Science Co-ordinator, organized a Key Stage 2 Science day on June13th. This time Years 3 through to 6 will had chance to discover science at BSB! On Science Day, I was grouped with the Year 3B class. 3B’s activity was about bubbles. They had an inflatable mini swimming pool full of bubble mixture. We tried to make giant bubbles using a hoop. Once or twice we succeeded in making a giant bubble.

We went to 'Rocket Launching' next. We each made our own paper aero plane. Before launching our 'rockets', we talked about how the planes where aero-dynamic and how the wing length on the planes mattered.

We had break next. There was a black garbage bag the shape of a cylinder. It was approximately 5m long and 35cm wide. The air inside was slowly heated by the sun causing the garbage bag to rise. Once, it even raised above our school! But, once the bag raised, the air cooled and the bag arched over and started coming down again. The bag was doing waves all over the sky making an unforgettable sight.

Then we had more activities after break.

We went to Mr. Hamacher's 'Bug Hunt' activity next. We had to wander around the front yard of the campus finding bugs. After that, we ate lunch and had break. Next we had Mr. Kennedy's 'Parachute Making' activity.

Finally when it was all over, we went inside and back up to the 3B classroom and had 5-10 minutes of silent play before going downstairs and home. What a great day!

BSB Winter Ski Trip to Austria Hello, we are Amy You and Ilinca Ostahie from 4H. During the April break we went to Austria for an alpine ski trip at the Hintertux Glacier with Mr.Hamacher, Mrs. Corina and Mr. Dan. We went to a four star hotel that was absolutely amazing. We skied on the glacier on the first day and the sun was shinning brightly. However, after that we rarely saw the sun because it was always snowing. The skiing was the best because the snow was so deep. Fresh tracks everyday! We are both crazy skiers and had our fair share of wipe-outs.

The hotel had a swimming pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, and a games room with 2 lanes of bowling, ping-pong, billiards, air-hockey and foze ball. The meals Hooray, skiing in Austria is the BEST! were out of this world and Amy and I liked the sweets the most. On the last day, we visited a real cheese factory and got to learn how they make cheese. All in all, we stayed there for a week and even though we missed our families we had a great trip!
