Dear Parents & Friends of BSB As part of our accreditations and quality assurance, BSB is a member of both COBIS and ECIS, and we regularly send a delegate to their conferences to hear the latest debate on education, our own curriculum and the vision for schools internationally.

During a recent conference in London I was honoured to hear some very inspiring speeches from government representatives as well as research academics and leaders in fields other than education. With a perpetually changing world, more people are working abroad than ever before and this continues to create a huge demand for quality education worldwide. A focus of the conference was on our ‘precious cargo’- our students - and how to improve their learning allowing them to capitalize on their interests and give them skills for their future.

I have often spoken about our commitment to produce ‘happy 35 year olds’, students that will grow up to be able to make the most of every opportunity and write a fantastic story of their lives. I considered the Year 6 students currently making the move into secondary who in 7 years’ time will have the vote, they may be looking at nearly 30, 000 GBP in university fees and perhaps facing an uncertain world of work. It was a great chance to look into the future and reflect on the wealth of possibility, for all the careers and personal journeys our students will take, from great professional challenges to being good parents and responsible citizens; and then to consider what must we do to help our children be ready for all these things.

I believe BSB continues to encourage our children to be competent and confident in themselves, to act with integrity, and be ready to take responsibility, while supporting and nurturing others. I feel strongly that our children are fascinated by the natural world; they recognize human achievements and failings and can talk confidently about such matters.

This academic year has once again shown how BSB students excel at being creative, sporting, and innovative; they remain appreciative of cultures and are sensitive towards others’ values. Most of all they leave BSB qualified to take on the next stage of learning and they fundamentally see that it is a learning life.

I wish all our families a wonderful summer, we look forward to welcoming you back in September, and for our students graduating, we truly wish you have the most amazing learning life, making memories that we are so proud to have started with you here at the British School of Bucharest.

When I visit Korea I am happy that I can meet my family.

In my country there are black bears, street dogs, and most of the time there are black cats.

Kimchie is a popular dish and South Koreans love spicy food.

Karata is the national sport.

Zoos are popular because there are lots of animals there, more animals than in Romania, such as tigers, monkeys, chimpanzees, snakes and even bears.

I have lived in Bucharest for 5 years and I never went to school in Seoul.

There are lots of lovely places to visit in Seoul.

Where are they now: Andreea Prasacu I studied at BSB for five great years and left in 2012. I am now in the Netherlands taking European Studies at the University of The Hague.

Being a BSB student was great for me, as the teachers were very dedicated and spent so much time with me as an individual, helping me with my studies all the way. Any school can teach English but at BSB I learned a lot about understanding the subjects and applying critical thinking, which is what universities want to see evidence of.

I hope to see you all again soon!

Where are they now: Martina Greaney It was with great sadness that I left BSB last June. I really enjoyed my three years working and living in Bucharest. I made so many wonderful friends and had the privilege of working with great staff and inspiring students. But the Southern Hemisphere beckoned me and here I am nine months later working and living in Jakarta, Indonesia.

It has been a fantastic experience so far. I have had the opportunity to travel to many parts of Asia, which has really been an amazing cultural experience.

I am now teaching at NZIS, Jakarta and I am working with fantastic teachers and students that make it a joy to go to work every day. The biggest change is that it is hot all year round here, so I am no longer sporting that blue-white skin tone anymore and weekends are spent sitting by the pool! Not a bad life really!

I would like to send my warmest wishes to everyone at BSB and thank you for making my time there so fantastic! Best of luck to all of the examination students.

Introducing: Daniela Tamas It’s good to be back after 2 years. Many things have changed, many stayed the same, but still I feel like I left for only a few months. I was glad to see my old colleagues and to meet some new ones.

Working with children was always my favourite job, and now that I have my own child I enjoy it even more.

For the future I would like to study child psychology and develop my own business.

It’s not a usual hobby for a woman but I like driving, as well as decorating cakes and playing volleyball.

Introducing: Raluca Moreh I studied Theology and Social Assistance at the University of Bucharest. I love reading, playing the guitar, singing and cycling. It has been my dream to work as a TA and the fact that I finally get to do this job makes me very happy.

It has been a great time here so far; I’m still learning a lot and I get new challenges every day. Investing my time and energy in helping others to become more mature is most rewarding.

Interviewer: The Martial Arts sounds to be an important matter in Karate. Very well, what does Karate mean to you?

M.Stuparu: To me Karate is ‘A Lifestyle’.

Interviewer: Wow! Sounds more like an adventure than just ‘A Lifestyle’. So, how many Dans do you have now?

M.Stuparu: Yes, but that is not exactly the way I see it because it requires me to work twice as hard as usual. Anyway, I have passed my Karate Examination last summer and successfully achieved 5 Dan! Just to let you know, from 5 Dan a person can be Sensei.

Interviewer: Ok. Could you please tell me, why you stopped participating in Karate competitions?

M.Stuparu: The reason for this is, competitions are just a short period for a Karateka and when you reach a minimum age, this will not be possible. On the other hand, I am pretty lucky to have had the experience through these memorable competitions.

Interviewer: I see, interesting. In general, what are your interests/ hobbies?

Mrs. Marta Early in April, BSB’s Karate teacher, Mrs Marta, was interviewed by Jasmina from Year 13. We publish the interview in tribute to her husband, Sensei Dan, who sadly passed away a short while later.

Interviewer: For how many years have you been teaching Karate at this school?

M. Stuparu: I must admit that not only, Karate is one of my main preferences.

Likewise, one of my hobbies is reading books; another one is fashion (laughs) and yes, as said, Karate!

Interviewer: That was a very adorable conclusion. Thank you!

M. Stuparu: I would like to say thank you for the chance to be interviewed.

M.Stuparu: Well, I have been teaching Karate since 2001 at BSB.

Interviewer: Before practising Karate, what was your occupation?

M. Stuparu: I am an Engineer in the wood industry and that was my first occupation. I began practicing Karate many years before starting my studies in Wood Technology. The reason I have chosen this branch was because I wanted to be in Sensei’s hometown, and practice. I have been practicing Karate for 31 years and yes, before Karate I was in the Young National Team of Handball.

Interviewer: Within the BSB Community, how many Black Belt Students are there in the Karate group?

M. Stuparu: There is only one Black Belt Student, whom I teach, Jasmina (Yr 13), that’s you (smiles). You have been working very hard to achieve the Black Belt over the years at BSB and you can certainly be proud of that!

Interviewer: Yes, I guess this is something very special. So could you please tell us, who was your first instructor of inspiration?

M. Stuparu: You see, it actually was Sensei (our Karate Master). He received his 8 Dan (which requires many, many years of Karate training) two years ago in Traditional Karate. He is an amazing human being whom anyone can look up to!

Interviewer: Of course! What are the benefits of studying Martial Arts, or what was it about the Martial Arts that attracted you?

M. Stuparu: The Martial Arts is an art of self-defence. It helps a person to be better, stronger and gain confidence. Martial Arts is based on todome.

In the neighborhood: Valentin Netu a down-to-earth person. His straightforward approach to life is an utter inspiration.

It was uber exciting to be able to actually dig in onto what goes on behind the scenes. I was thrilled when I found out that I’d gotten a chance to visit the kitchen. First of all, I’d like to thank Mrs Wells, Ms Noble and Mr Walker for giving me this opportunity. Moreover, I’d also like to thank all the members of the catering team for their generosity and effort. You may not know it but these people play a pivotal role in our daily school lives.

What’s more is that I got a chance to interview Mr Valentin Netu, the Head Chef in the cooking team, and I must say it was a privilege to interview such

He started working at the age of 14 and knew from the very beginning that cooking was his passion. His only motive to pursue a career in this field was to make his customers happy and the gratitude and cheerful behaviour of the students is what keeps him and his colleagues motivated. However, being a head chef does sound very authoritative and fun but it does come with a lot of responsibilities, which is particularly due to the fact that he has to constantly come up with creative and sneaky ways to add vegetables to the meals, as we all are well aware of the fact that many young people aren’t too keen on eating vegetables. He also finds his new position challenging as now he is at the highest point in his current field. He comes to work with a big grin on his face as he works with his committed and hard-working team, who all work with pleasure.

Many of you may not know that Mr. Valentin is actually a pro in riding bikes and snowboarding. When asked for some words of wisdom, he said “Be smart, and you will never regret what you have done in your lifetime.”

Furthermore, his sinful indulgence is hot chilli and Joseph Haddad is his inspiration due to the creative mind that he owns.

BSB congratulates: Livia Bud Many people will know me as Miss Livia. I started working for BSB in 2007 and this year I had the pleasure to work with Miss Passmore in Year 2.

As some of you know, I recently had my second baby and her name is Maria Antonia. She arrived one month earlier than we expected but she is a fighter and now she is six weeks old.

Now we have a very noisy house with two children but we are very much enjoying being with them.

I would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Wells because she was all the time near my bed and she give me a big support. Another thank you to my team that I worked with.

BSB congratulates: Billie and Dan Just over a month ago on the 27th of April, Mr Dan Madsen and Miss Billie Jones celebrated their wedding with their families and friends in their home country of New Zealand. It was a beautiful day for them and everybody at BSB wishes them much happiness despite being so far away from them.

LOWER SCHOOL REVIEW Moving on up Educational transition represents a major change in children’s lives. Whether the children are moving from EYFS to KS1, from KS1 to KS2 or from KS2 to KS3, it is a significant point in the life of a child that marks the fact that they are growing up, becoming less reliant on their families and increasingly more capable of taking on new challenges.

The biggest transitions are those involving a move to a completely new physical and social environment. Luckily, at BSB this all happens under one roof, so disruption is kept to a minimum, with the children already being familiar with the campus from Crib through to 6th Form. For most children, starting a new nursery, school or Key Stage is a relatively smooth process, but transition is also a time of vulnerability for children as they progress through their educational careers.

Some children can become anxious and sensitive to change; particular worries include their ability to cope with new work demands, homework, getting lost or making new friends. Therefore, at school, transition planning is required to ensure a smooth transition for all children at this crucial time. Key principles of good transition practice at BSB are communication, induction and finding a good balance between continuity and change.

Open communication with all parties is important, including parents/carers, staff at the ‘sending’ and ‘receiving’ settings, and the children themselves.

Induction programmes are helpful, including physical orientation and introduction to new people, rules and routines. BSB staff plan for continuity by finding out about children’s previous experiences and ensuring that there are at least some familiar elements in place, with new experiences introduced gradually over a period of time.

On the other hand, children and young people expect each transition to bring new challenges and experiences. Identifying positive new opportunities for young people is a great way of encouraging motivation and ensuring progress.

The types of transition practices that we at BSB believe have a positive impact include: Arranging visits to the new setting/classroom for children on ‘Moving Up Day’ Reception/Year 2 attending KS1/KS2 assemblies in the summer term Helping to ensure continuity of staffing and keeping children’s friendship groups intact Arranging summer school programmes Providing induction programmes and buddying/mentoring schemes for new entrants Year 7 pupils visit Year 6 and give presentations about their school Link projects KS2/KS3 – transition in Maths For pupils to build on successes from their previous year and to make good progress in learning across the Key Stages, they need to experience: 1. Progression – where learning builds sequentially on what has been learned previously and shows an upward gradient in demand as pupils move from year to year.

2. Continuity – where planned links and similarities ensure that there are no unnecessary jumps and gaps in pupils’ learning or repetition.

We believe it is important to adopt a range of strategies to ease transition in order to help children and young people make better progress. Although some children may need extra support during transition, all children benefit from positive planning and communication. When young people make a good transition, it affects their well-being, motivation and attainment. It also helps them to develop the skills to face new situations with confidence – an increasingly important preparation for life in the 21st Century.

Marvellous Mini Beasts in Crib and Creche

Creche children visit the nature garden in their search for exciting bugs As the weather has been changing, Crib and Crèche have been taking advantage of this and have enjoyed looking at the different types of mini beasts that can be found in out environment. We have searched, high, low, above, under and all around to see what we can find. One of our favourite places to search has been the Science and Nature Garden where we found lots of different bugs around the pond.

Also, the children used the change in weather to start planting flowers. They learnt how to take care of what they had planted and what flowers and plants need in order to grow and flourish.

During this theme the children have made progress in each of the areas of learning through talking about their favourites and identfying the varying features of many types of mini beasts.

An action-packed term in Preschool

Preschool K painted and constructed a tiger jeep for our jungle role-play area Preschool have had a really busy and fun-filled term. We had the fantastic opportunity to take swimming lessons twice a week at ‘Swim and Gym’. All the children really enjoyed this and made huge progress, most swimming without floats and aids by the end. They have already been asking when we can start swimming in the school pool!

Both classes have been working on number recognition, counting and matching objects, counting backwards, finding one more and one less, and looking for the missing number in a sequence. We have also been practising name writing, hearing and saying initial sounds in words, and even sounding out words.

To tie in with our topics, we had an exciting trip to Beneasa Zoo, and have a planned trip to Herastrau Park for a boat trip and to visit the aquarium. We also had a visit from Dizzy the Dinosaur, who showed us how to clean our teeth correctly. Other highlights this term are a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, our annual Summer Fair and a fun Water Day. Preschool V have been looking at sea creatures and making various arts and crafts like sharks, seashell collages, jellyfish and some beautiful textured starfish. Take a peek at our Under the Sea world! We have been using our language skills to describe ocean scenes and animals, and in maths we have made fish patterns and made size comparisons.

Preschool K have been interested in jungle animals and have also produced some great work- cutting spiral snails, sketching and painting jungle animals and making our own Dear Zoo book. We have been using our speaking and listening skills to describe animals and recall animal facts. In Maths we have been measuring lengths and heights, including ourselves!

Who Helps Reception?

Reception children practicing their balancing skills during Healthy Schools Week What a busy and exciting final term for the children in Reception. We began the term by learning of ways to keep our bodies healthy. This linked in with the early learning goal: ‘children should understand the importance of good health, of physical exercise, of a healthy diet and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe.’

Children took part in Healthy Schools Week and particularly enjoyed a tasting session where they all tried new foods. They enjoyed trying a range of new sports and were encouraged to bring in a healthy snack.

As the term progressed we began to focus on the theme ‘People Who Help Us’, beginning with a tour around the campus to find out who helped us at school. The children decided to make the people who help them in school a card to say thank you. We then focused on people who help us the most at home and discussed different ways of how they helped us. We made a pictogram to show our results. We also began to look at the wider community to see how people outside of school helped us and each week looked at a different person who might be there to help. The children displayed both their acting and their caring sides through their hospital role play area.

Year 1

Brecht explaining her work to Miss Dibble This year has been a wonderful time in Year 1 and it is hard to believe that it is nearly over. The children have worked so hard in all of their subjects and the progress they have made can be easily seen from looking at all they have achieved.

In Numeracy this term we started off with learning about data handling, linking it into our ICT topic and learning how to show different information using software on our school computers. We also linked it to our Healthy Schools Week and collected information for Mr Hughes about our favourite sports. The top sport in Year 1 was running, closely followed by skiing and scooter riding.

In Literacy we have been writing our own poems based on our Carnival of the Animals topic. We now know that poems do not need to rhyme but must have rhythm. We read different poems together and enjoyed sharing our reasons for liking them. It was then the children’s turn to write their own poems experimenting with rhyme but always remembering the rhythm. The children have been focusing very hard on their handwriting and correct letter formation in preparation for moving into Year 2 and the new challenges that will face them. We have also been busy using both non-fiction books and online resources to look for information on African animals, using what we had learned to make our own information cards.

It has been a cracking year in Year 1 and all of the teachers would like to say a great big well done to all the children and wish them lots of success in Year 2.

The Bear Necessities of Life in Year 2

Collecting materials with which to create their own Andy Goldsworthy pieces Year 2 have really enjoyed their Bears topic this term. We have been learning about non-fiction Information Texts and Non-Chronological Reports and we combined ICT, Literacy and topic to focus this on bears.

We studied the different types of bears and we talked about the variation between species. Furthermore, we also learned about the habitats of bears and used our mapping skills to find out the continents on which we can find them. We also discovered which bears were endangered animals and talked about what we can do to help.

We were very interested to find out about the history of the teddy bear and this made us more grateful when we had our Teddy Bears’ Picnic. We learned how one of the most-loved toys came into being. Do you know?

Maths has been tricky this last term, as we have been learning how to calculate and recite numbers to 1000 and we have been doing a lot of measuring. We enjoyed learning about symmetry and right angles and we also learned about Venn diagrams.

Art has been really fun; we have been using the work of Andy Goldsworthy to inspire our own artwork based on nature. We collected things from the garden to make collages and then we produced drawings of them.

MFL Taster Lessons for Year 2

Year 2 students are looking forward to starting to learn a Modern Foreign Language (French, German, Mandarin or Spanish) next year. On the 13th of June, they took part in taster lessons for the four languages, in order to get a glimpse of what awaits them in MFL. They enjoyed learning the names of endangered animals in French from Madame Citron and Monsieur Haslé, moving on to learn to name body parts in Mandarin with Miss Kong. They were fluent naming the days of the week in Spanish after meeting Miss Rocío and had learned to sing a German song about a hungry little fish, with Miss Draser. The enthusiasm of the children was genuine and it will be the best mindset for next year. Congratulations to all the children involved!

Year 3 To date we have had a lovely summer term with plenty more to look forward to. Both 3K and 3M had their class assemblies. 3K worked on the theme of Ireland and St.Patrick’s Day, which was great fun. The children learnt all about Irish myths and legends and even learnt an Irish dance! 3M became playwrights and wrote and produced a selection of mini plays which were very entertaining.

The children are getting very excited about the residential trip to Sinaia where they will be visiting the beautiful Peles Castle and surrounding area.

3M went on a class trip to the Romanian National Bank where they had a guided tour and learnt a lot about money. The highlight of the tour was being brought into the counting room to see the money being counted and wrapped.

We have been working hard on our topic of Buildings and Bucharest. We are looking at the work of the famous artist Georgia O’Keefe and taking inspiration from her for our art and design projects. We have been learning about the history of Bucharest and the legend of Bucur and the Dambovita river.

For our Science the children have been investigating Rocks and Soils, carrying out lots of experiments and activities.

We are really looking forward to our forthcoming day trip to the Village Museum where we will be looking at how buildings in Romania have changed over time.

Year 4 Integration and the Olympics

After exploration in our Science Garden, 4C students are able to locate and identify organisms and their habitats Year Four students started the third and final term learning about the Olympics. In this shared learning experience across the year group, the children began by learning about the International Olympic Committee. They worked cooperatively in class groups to identify key features necessary to be apart of the IOC. Then student pairs came together and created their own member of the IOC where they made them come to life using Voki technology.

In doing this, they learnt a range of characteristics, abilities and qualifications necessary in the professional panel managing the Olympics. Student work is progressing with the integration of Geography and History in this unit as students work with one another to research a country for which they will propose an Olympic bid.

Our work in English is focusing on persuasive writing with an emphasis on advertisements and how they persuade consumers to purchase products.

Students have had the opportunity to study and analyse the different characteristics advertisements contain. This work is helping to prepare students on how to create a successful and persuasive Olympic bid for their drawn country. Year four students and teachers are looking forward to the progression of these projects and the final presentations of the bids near the end of the term.

While students are busy in topic work, they are also learning all about habitats and the organisms best suited for specific habitats. Students are able to utilise the Science Garden as well as other areas of the BSB campus to complete tasks on the topic.

Combined activities amongst the classes have helped pupils exchange ideas and prepare each other for the creation and success of their Olympic bids.

Year 5: Preparing for the future

Making sure to get all of the labels correct onto our plant diagrams In the last term of this year, we have been very busy in Year 5 preparing for the practice SATs tests, which are very similar to the SATs tests that the students take at the end of Year 6. This is the first time that the students in Year Five have experienced a strict formal testing situation and they coped extremely well.

Away from the tests, the students have been learning about the lifecycle of plants. We began by making some observational drawings and creating diagrams of living plants to help us identify their different parts, and have now begun combining this with our ICT theme, creating nature documentary movies. The students have been researching and gathering fascinating information about plants, watching extracts from the works of David Attenborough and trying to copy his style to present facts about plants in an interesting and exciting way!. The films that were created in Year 5 were amazing and proved that we have some talented junior film-makers!

Finally, we are all very excited about our upcoming Year 5 residential to Moeciu de Sus. This is our annual trip to the mountains which brings us all together at the end of the year and which promises will be a brilliant adventure.

A term of variety for Year 6 This term Year 6 have worked hard to write and produce a script for a documentary about extreme weathers and disasters. This followed on from their studies of ‘How humans cope with disasters’ which included a look into tornadoes, volcanoes and life in Antarctica. The children presented their documentary in their class assembly. It was well received by an audience of Key Stage 2 children and parents.

All of Year 6 has been working on scripts, learning to use the conventions for stage direction and direct speech. We are working hard to prepare for our summer production in June, all parts have been assigned and in between all of this activity we are keeping up our speed and comprehension in Maths and Literacy.

Year 2 Trip to Ana Pan

2R making bees Year 2 students had an amazing trip to the Ana Pan Factory this term. It was very exciting to see how real-world applications can be linked to what we have been learning about in school. In Science we learned about how matter can change from solids to liquids and back again. In the candy part of the factory we saw melted chocolate being poured into molds and placed into the large freezers.

We then entered a different room to see the tools used to melt the large blocks of chocolate before being poured into moulds. Walking through the mixing rooms was a great opportunity to bring in reminders of numeracy and measurements. We compared and contrasted mixing and baking at home verse baking at Ana Pan. We saw the large ovens used to bake bread at Ana Pan and remembered that these were the type of ovens that started the Great Fire of London back in 1620, which we had just finished learning about in history.

Walking from room to room was so interesting and fun as we got to taste many of the different products made at the factory. Out of all the many exciting parts of the trip by far the most wonderful part of the day was when we got to make food with support form the staff at Ana Pan. 2P and 2F were able to make pretzels, while 2R made either a lady bird or a bee.

Reception Trip to Family Clinic

Using the tools to look inside Jonah’s mouth As part of our class theme People Who Help Us Reception S have been searching for real life examples of People Who Help Us in our school community and beyond. This inspired our trip to the Family Clinic in Pipera on Wednesday the 28th of May. During the visit the children had the opportunity to get a hands on experience of what it is like to be a doctor and to investigate the different types of tools they use. They began their visit by taking turns to sit on the chair where people get injections and the doctor demonstrated without needles how they took blood samples. They then went into an examination room where they were shown the cameras they use to look in ears and throats. The final part of the visit involved some confident volunteers to have an ultrasound where the children got to see organs inside their bodies including their heart, bladder and kidneys.

Overall the children in Reception had a very interesting, engaging visit to the Family Clinic where they learnt how people help us on a practical level. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Egg Hunt Key Stage Two children using the school grounds to look for their clues The maps had been made ready and the clues had been set. The chocolate eggs had been delivered by the spring bunny but the weather decided that the hunt was not meant to happen before the spring break. So with snow falling the Egg Hunt had to be postponed until after the holiday.

The children returned to a sunnier Bucharest for the beginning of the Summer Term and they were able to once again use their mapping skills to find clues, answer the different questions found at each of the stations and then finally collect all the letters needed to work out the final clue. The children had been mixed up throughout the year groups and split into groups of 4 to 5 children.

Each group had a map on which they recorded their answers and also told them the order in which they needed to follow the clues.

KS2’s task took place around the front school grounds whilst KS1 worked within the Ringwood playground area. The children had to work together to find the clues and share the maps. Orienteering is a fantastic sport as it is fun but, as the egg hunt demonstrated, also helps with essential team building skills.

It has been a great year for Geography at BSB, following on from the success of our Silver Primary Geography Quality Mark award which we received at the beginning of this academic year. We have been able to use the feedback from this award to help shape our Geography planning and teaching. We now have this award for three years and look forward to working towards getting the Gold in 2015.

Children’s Book Choices in the Lower School Library

Elena and Erin helping to add new books to the Library inventory The Junior Library hosts books that cover the varied reading interests of students from Creche all the way to Year 6. Books are ordered throughout the school year and this is done after careful selection, always trying to find the best criteria to do this.

Trying to keep our stock as appealing as possible and to balance between choosing new releases and long-loved classics, I sometimes sneak a peak at the lists of “Top 100 bestsellers” or “Top 100 hot new releases” on the internet. I also ask my colleagues who travel to check out the book stands in the airports and come back with a few titles for me, or visit some of the popular book stores in town or at the malls.

With each new set of orders that we receive, I make sure we have something that would interest both the boys and the girls of course, new readers and

more experienced ones as well. This school year, to add to the general order that arrived before school in September, we had 7 other smaller orders arriving. As with every new delivery, with the last one that has arrived in May I had the help from the year 6s to have the books quickly stamped, inventoried and ready to be signed out by readers.

Challenging yourself is both rewarding and fun Have you challenged yourself recently? We did. Everyone throughout the school, including teachers, challenged themselves in one way or another.

EYFS had such a great week learning about the importance of being healthy and trying something new. They monitored their snacks within the classroom, keeping a record of the types of snack they were eating. By the end of the week everyone was bringing healthy snacks to school. They had a ‘hammering’ time in Reception smashing a coconut into several pieces. All of EYFS gathered to complete some fun and exciting sports activities that helped them challenge themselves further.

In KS1 and KS2 we had different challenges that we tried everyday. Each child made a pasSPORT that was stamped, just like when you travel to different countries. KS1 kicked off the week with ‘Beat the Goalie’ where the children competed against Miss Aimee and myself. Throughout the week the children challenged themselves by shooting hoops in basketball, throwing a Frisbee to a partner, counting the number of skips they could do in 3 minutes and finally balancing a ball on a bat whilst walking a certain distance.

Year 4 are busy sharing ideas about their activities in Healthy Schools week

KS2 had a blast with Mr Hughes and Miss Williams completing a number of new and exciting activities. They tried their hand at golf, kabadi, Frisbee and orienteering. Each child completed a ‘Personal Best Book’ in which they stated what was good about the activity and how they would make it better next time.

KS3, 4 and 5 challenged themselves in many ways throughout the different lessons they had. Some even came to help out with the sporting activities for the younger children.

The teachers were asked how they have challenged themselves either inside of outside of school. These challenges ranged from moving to another country to running a full marathon. You can read about all the different challenges if you visit the lunch room.

And to top off what was a successful week, Friday went down a ‘Smooth’ treat with some healthy smoothies filled with goodness which tasted ‘berrilicious’.

Thinking Green for Eco Week 2013

HRH Prince Nicholas visits as the patron for Planet BSB The staff and pupils at BSB worked together to produce an energetic Eco Week between the 18th and 22nd of March . The proud members of the Eco Committee “Planet BSB” had been making preparations for months through the school’s energy saving campaign. Through making videos, posters and signs the pupils have been able inspire their colleagues into action and have significantly reduced the energy consumption of the school.

The annual Green Day took was in March and with children and staff dressing in green we raised 1787.70 Ron for eco initiatives within the school. The energy saving campaign also reached a climax with the acoustic concert “Eco Unplugged” which was designed to raise awareness for Earth Hour the following day. As active as ever, the KS2 Eco Reps had been canvassing all week to try and get pupils and staff to pledge their support to Earth Hour and agree to switch of their lights for an hour. They managed to get 147 signatures to commit to Earth Hour which is testament to their hard work and diligence throughout the year.

Me and my pet: Lukas, Y4

Lukas with Prinzy and Fuchur My name is Lukas and I have two cats called Prinzy and Fuchur who are both 10 years old. The male (Fuchur) is white with brown spots and the female (Prinzy) is white with brown and black spots. They both enjoy catching birds but love catching mice and lizards.

They start playing if you put your hand above their head. My cats then grab your hand and get ready to play. My cats can climb trees 2 metres tall and can jump 2 metres. Prinzy can’t hear as well as Fuchur and won’t let you carry him.

I really like both of my cats!

Handwriting Competition This annual competition involved children in Years 1 & 2, plus KS2. The children were required to copy a set poem or quotation in their best handwriting. One of the highlights of the year for 3M was their trip to the National Bank of Romania in the Old Town.

The children were given a tour of this great institution and were excited to witness the machines counting the bank notes. They also learned a little about the bank’s role, interest rates and other technicalities.

Icky Doo Dah hits BSB

Simon Murray drawing Icky Doo Dah The author visit was a HUGE success and the children (and teachers) all loved Simon Murray’s illustration workshops where they learnt how to draw a very interesting character called Icky Doo Dah, the fun-loving, mischievous character from Simon’s books.

Over the two-and-a-half days Simon spent at our school he worked with the Reception children and all Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 students, finishing on Thursday with a book signing.

During the introductory assembly, Simon explained how he came up with the idea for Icky Doo Dah and for other characters in his books. He encouraged the children to use their experiences and things that are familiar to them as a starting point for their writing. Simon gave the children lots of ideas for future writing and work to follow on from the workshops which they are very excited about completing.

Mr. McCrea, Year 4 teacher, said “He was absolutely brilliant. By far the most impressive author I have seen coming into any school I have worked in. He was positive and engaged the children with an excellent illustration activity.

The children were all able to complete the task with a degree of individuality.”

Year 2 workshop – The children have completed their own Icky Doo Dah characters

Fun at the Zoo with Year 1 On Monday the 13th May the Year 1’s were all very excited to be going on their Zoo trip. As part of our ‘Carnival of Animals’ topic this term, we have been finding out all about the African Savannah and the different types of animals that we might find there.

When we arrived at the zoo we all gathered together into our groups and to have our snack. After this we then went on our tour of the zoo to see what we could find. We saw some wonderful animals and had a fantastic time. There were a few animals that we all decided we would have liked to see so when we got back to school we decided that it would be an excellent idea to try to create our own zoo.

We all thought really hard about what the different animals it would need and how we could make the zoo comfortable for them so that they could have a nice life.

In Art we have focused on learning how to draw animals by looking for the different shapes which build up their bodies. The children were all very enthusiastic about seeing the animals in real life and were all eager to get back to school to have another go at creating their beautiful artwork.

Super Swimmers

Developing confidence under close supervision Crèche and Preschool have recently taken part in a course of swimming lessons at Planet Swim and Gym. The main focus of the programme was on water confidence and developing the necessary skills to build on in the future. These lessons were very enjoyable and all the children who took part thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Swimming is a great way for children to develop their gross motor skills, strength and control through body movements. By the end of the swimming lessons many Preschool children were confident without floating aids, armbands or rubber rings.

PGL Trip

Canoeing was so much fun The Year 6 trip to PGL at Liddington in the United Kingdom was a great success, not least because, despite it being April, the weather was pretty good almost every day.

When we arrived in Liddington we met up with our fantastic team leader, Jake, who took care of everything for us and made sure that we knew where things were happening and how to get the most out of our visit. We began the week with evening games which Jake organised and kept running all the time.

Tuesday morning was bright and sunny and everyone learnt how to fix their climbing kit for safety and all had a go at the climbing wall. The tunnel was a challenge for those who struggle with small spaces, but everyone did it. That afternoon was one of the highlights of the week, as Year 6 built fantastic rafts using plastic sealed drums, wood and rope, all lashed together. It was the boys against the girls and after a number of games it became clear that the girls had built the strongest raft, simply because it didn’t fall apart like the boys’ did… But how was it that all of the girls ended up in the water? It was great fun and the sun shone.

The week stayed on a high with exciting activities like the Giant Swing, the Trapeze and a great evening quiz, featuring a pirate who stopped you from answering questions by spraying you with water! We would recommend PGL to anyone in the future.

SECONDARY REVIEW On joining BSB at the start of this academic year, I was delighted to be informed that all of our students from Years 3-9 would be given the chance to study Mandarin as beginners. In Secondary this was introduced via a single lesson each week for the Key Stage 3 classes. Having spent several years in Asia, the economic rise of China and the benefits of developing an understanding of the language and culture are evident to me.

Analysis of previous exam results last August also showed a real strength amongst our student body for languages. From my observations I can confirm that this is no doubt partly as a result of outstanding teaching. However there seems to be a natural affinity amongst many of our students to acquire additional languages, especially those that share common roots such as Italian, Spanish Romanian and French. For many of you this observation will not be news and it seems the generally accepted exception to this are the British.

Recent research has investigated the validity of this general observation. Clear evidence points to bilingual students (or those with excellent foundations in a language other than their native tongue) finding the acquisition of a new language significantly more straightforward than for a second-language learner. Hence the language curriculum enhancements that we are making appear well founded, as such a large percentage of our students are bi-lingual or already advanced in a second language.

The introduction of Mandarin into our Key Stage 3 has allowed us to take greater advantage of this penchant for language learning to enhance the prospects of our students educationally, whilst also maximising their external exam results. From September, our Year 8 students will continue with their first choice MFL (French, German or Spanish) but also make a fuller study of a second MFL, as they choose a second language from Mandarin, French, German and Spanish. This insistence on in-depth study of two languages in Key Stage 3 will allow the students to choose two languages, should they wish, for IGCSE study in KS4 and potentially to A-Level. I can only see this as a good thing for curriculum choice, individual exam results and academic challenge. This will help to give our students a competitive edge both in their applications to university but also as they enter the workplace in the future.

Production Planning The Wiz and creating the concept

I was asked to write an article about The Wiz and rather than just writing a review, I thought I would write about how you begin when planning a production and how the design concept for the show came about.

for them; a script and songs that were manageable but still entertaining, and a large chorus. We needed a show that has plenty of parts for both male and female performers. In this respect The Wiz seemed perfect, and the music is great as well!

Once you have considered these issues and picked the show, the really fun part begins. All drama teachers, when planning a show and trying to create a ‘concept,’ work in different ways. I usually start with a colour, a shape, or a picture; something that sparks ideas.

Firstly, there are practical considerations. You need to think about how many students you have, what age range and what skills they have. Perhaps a show that you love won’t work in a particular school. For example, I love West Side Story and have had the pleasure of directing it in the UK but that was in a comprehensive school of 2,000 students with a group of Key Stage 4 and 5 actors, all of them seasoned performers with years of musical experience behind them. Plus the fact that West Side Story only has four decent female parts.

Back in September, when researching the show, I stumbled across the picture of a rainbow and knew that I wanted to use it as a reference to the original Wizard of Oz. This rainbow later appeared on the T shirts of the Munchkins and in the lighting plot. I also searched for pictures of past productions and realized that I wanted the Emerald City in our version of The Wiz to look really GREEN! I wanted patterns and sparkle, and different shapes on the back drop. I wanted our production of The Wiz to be colourful, fun and relevant to a modern audience in Romania in 2013. I had a definite idea of how I wanted the stage to look but the challenge was to translate these sketchy ideas into something concrete.

These pictures went up on my notice board where they stayed for the next few weeks. I kept looking at them and waiting for ideas to take shape, which they did… slowly.

Planning The Wiz was fun. I really can’t wait to start on next year’s production!

“You guys hurry up, you’re on in 5!”

Those are the most important words as a stage manager, and those were the words we used most that week. Though many may think stage managing is an easy job it actually isn’t. We first thought it would be, but oh boy, we were wrong!

It all started when Miss. Oliver kindly asked us to help along with the show and be stage managers. Little did we know what hard work it would be!

At first all we had to do was create the advertising; the ticket, poster, and program. Then we started putting together some of the costumes and makeup plans.

But it was when we got to the theatre that all the hard work began. We had to know when everybody had to go on and off stage and make sure they were in the right costumes and had the right props all at the right time. In addition we had to make sure the set was always the way it should be, and we had to move props around onstage.

Being backstage was also as exciting as being on stage. It took a lot of discipline to create this performance. A lot of patience, a lot of skill and mostly a lot of teamwork!

It was a bit scary at first dancing in front of the dazzling lights but after our eyes got used to it, it was really cool! It was fun and we hope that we will do the same idea next year!

Having done this show we have learnt that in a show if you make a mistake nobody will know because they have never seen it before so you can just pretend it didn’t happen. We also learnt that if you all work hard you can achieve something great!

Everybody was really stressed during that week; from the students to the teachers to us, the stage managers as we wanted everything to be perfect for the big night.

We chose this university because we wanted to try something new. We also chose it because it was a great opportunity to practice our drama skills. In this university we practiced our songs and dances. We then had a week off school to go to Fratelli Studios to rehearse.

Then the show began. It all went smoothly and just the way we planned, our hard work paid off. Miss Oliver did shout at us a couple of times for people not being on stage at the right time but we understood why, because the small glimpse of the show that we saw from backstage seemed amazing. It was like being at a professional theatre, and we were part of it. This made us proud. Very proud.

We would like to thank every single person involved in the making of this because a lot of hard work and stress went into it, and EVERYBODY made a difference. We would like to say well done to the cast and crew of ‘The Wiz’ - it truly turned out great!

During rehearsals, you had to be very committed and you had always know where your costume was. We had to work really hard to get our acting, singing and dancing perfect. On the day of the performance everyone was really nervous. It was fun backstage but it was hard to keep track of all your costume pieces, in fact, it would be helpful to get a tracker and put it in your costume, because if you don’t have your costume you can’t go on!

It was really a great experience to work with the lighting team and band. We learned to be more responsible and mature because all the adults treated us like secondary students. Overall, I think that this was the best University yet and I hope that lots of people will join it next time!

Below our Year 5 and 6 Students share their experiences of being in the Secondary Production…

We enjoyed this university very much because it was an updated version of “The Wizard of Oz.” It was called “The Wiz”, and it had music from the 1970’s.

In rehearsal, we worked really hard and learned seven dances. We had the opportunity to work with the secondary students which was really exciting. We also wore make up which included special stage foundation, lipstick, eyebrow pencil, mascara and blusher.

All the rehearsals were tiring and exhausting. Many of them included waiting for our turn to go onstage. It was hard being patient all the way through but we made it. When we were rehearsing at school we didn’t feel like professional actors, but on a special Saturday, when we came to school to rehearse with the secondary students, we realised that we were really close to performing the best show we’ve ever done.

Book Week Illustration Competition

Shortly before Easter, World Book Week took place, with people from all over the world coming together to celebrate literature in all its many forms. For schools, Book Week is obviously an important event, and at BSB we had a full programme of activities throughout the week, including a scavenger hunt in the library and a book exchange, where staff, students and parents were encouraged to bring in books they had read to swap for those they hadn’t.

One of the other events was an illustration competition. Students were given an excerpt from The Amber Spyglass, by Philip Pullman, and were then asked to illustrate the scene. This is a nice activity as it is cross-curricular and displays the different interpretations that people have of a given text in a very visual way. We had some lovely entries and the overall winner was Yasemin, Y9.

Leavers’ Dinner

All together The Inaugural Leavers’ Dinner was held recently at the Hilton. Students and teachers enjoyed an evening of fine food and reminiscence. The dinner is a celebration marking the end of school for many of our students and the start of the next phase in the leavers’ lives, which for most of the Leavers is the start of studies in a new country.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly some moving speeches made by various teachers about each individual leaver. Some tales and pictures from the students’ younger days were revealed, as well as genuinely heartfelt appreciation of all that they have individually contributed to BSB. Our previous students often come back to visit us and, as teachers, we love to keep up with the news and progress they bring. Good luck to all our leavers in their exams this summer and in all that they do in the future.

Y13 destinations This year our sixth form students have secured offers of places on some of the most competitive university courses in the UK and in other countries. Several students had the difficult decision of choosing from four or five offers from different universities. The eventual destination of the Year 13 students is, in many cases, dependent upon the final A-Level results, which are published in August.

We are proud of the quality of advice and support we offer our students about their options after A Levels. Whilst we seek to give accurate and realistic advice regarding individual prospects in light of their predicted grades and prior examination performance, we remain fully committed to supporting them throughout the application process whatever their chosen path. Student Council Easter Party

Fun at the Easter Party Before Easter, the Secondary students enjoyed an Easter Party! It was organised by the Student Council in association with the PTA, who generously provided food and drinks for the afternoon. The students had a great time dancing and playing games. Some students played twister, while others competed in an Egg and Spoon race. There was even a dance competition, in which various students competed against each other with some truly stunning dance numbers.

Music was provide by Year 10 students, who did a great job with their choice of music. It was a great event enjoyed by all. I would like to thank the Student Council, PTA, Mr Walters, the teachers, maintenance staff and the students for making such an enjoyable event possible.

The World Scholar’s Cup – Trip to Dubai

Triumphant return The World Scholar’s Cup is becoming something of a tradition at BSB. It’s easy to see why, as it combines academic challenge with the opportunity to travel, to meet new people and experience new things, so it’s an attractive prospect.

In March BSB entered twelve students (two junior teams and two senior teams) into the Regional Round in Prague and, following on from a good record last year, again experienced success. Many of the students received individual accolades, while one of our junior teams won its division. They duly moved through to the Global Round, this year being held in Dubai, as did our other junior team. Our senior teams performed admirably as well, but unfortunately could not progress as the Global Round falls right in the middle of the exam period – and of course these take precedence!

So on the 19th of June, seven of our finest will once again be travelling overseas to represent their school in a competition that involves over 1000 students from many, many different schools from all across the globe. Good luck to all involved!

Light into Europe CCA

Here we are with the placard On 20th May, the Light into Europe CCA expanded its campaign outside of the school community, as we went with Ms Straw to the Lipscani area of Bucharest.

We know that many people receive information leaflets every day and never read them, so we decided we would need to be memorable for people to pay attention to our cause long enough to read and learn about it. We planned to combine the distribution leaflets with street theatre action, the idea being that people would be interested in the street theatre and so then read the leaflet we would then give them.

We walked around the area with one of us holding a white cane to represent a blind person, with the other person was holding a placard which read: “Help the Blind, they need you!” We then handed out leaflets with guides on how to help partially sighted people and what to do if they see a blind person.

These leaflets were in English and Romanian.

It took a lot of courage, because all those people were staring at us, and it was very scary. It was something new because it’s a new place and a new activity for us. We had to be careful with the theatre we made, so that people wouldn’t think that we are actually making fun of partially sighted people. We felt that we were making an impact upon the public, and we also think that now we know more about a blind person’s daily life. By evaluating our success and identifying things that we can improve on, we can create different activities for raising awareness in the future. Watch this space!

Secondary Tug of War House Competition

KS4 & 5’s turn to show their strength Cicero once famously compared the political arena to the art of Tug of War when he wrote “politics should function like a game of Tug of War. Two opposing sides need to continually struggle for dominance, but at no time can either side be permitted to walk away with the rope”.

Unfortunately, in this year’s Secondary Tug of War House Competition, this was never going to be the case. Mures did indeed walk away with the rope, winning nine out of nine competitions. Well done to team captain Francois, 8S, and to all who took part on the day.

Sports Report BSB sports teams have enjoyed much success in the final school term.

Muhammad on the way to winning the 800 metres race The under 12’s football team have produced some great results and came second in the French Cup, Lumina Cup and Cupa Primavera tournaments. The under 11’s football team won the Cupa Primavera tournament. The under 10’s just missed out on qualifying for the final in the Lumina Cup and finished fourth in the French Cup. The under 9’s won the ‘Fair Play’ trophy at the Cupa Primavera. The under 8’s finished third in the French Cup and fourth in the Lumina Cup, just missing out on third position on penalties. Dave, Y3, deservedly won ‘Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ in the under 8’s category at the Lumina Cup by producing some fine saves.

Nineteen students represented BSB at the Inter-Schools Athletics competition held at Izvorani. Battling the heat and some strong competition, we had a return of 10 medals. Notable performances came from Muhammad in year 10, who won gold in the 800 meters. Benny in year 8, Beatrice in year 4 and Jasper in year 4 all won two silver medals on the day.

BSB students have also achieved great success in the pool this term. The swimming team won 29 medals (10 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze) at the Atlantis Swimming Cup as well as a further five medals at the Inter-Schools swimming gala.

Congratulations to all the students who took part in what was a very successful term for BSB sports. Thank you also to all the parents who have helped out with coaching and supporting at each of the events.

Dragons’ Den Inter-School Competition At the end of the 2011-2012 academic year our business teacher, Mr Monaghan, contacted a number of other schools around Bucharest to invite them to participate in some of the events in our Enterprise Programme. We received replies confirming that some schools would be interested in joint ventures, and so at the beginning of this academic year Mr Monaghan and Mr Brown teamed up to organise some events that would provide the students with the opportunity to put many of the skills that they develop in class to use in a real, working environment.

Dragons’ Den was one of these events, with students from BSB, AISB, IBSB and Mark Twain school competing against each other in three categories: Overall Winner, Best Pitch and Most Innovative idea.

Students were required to come up with a business idea and a business plan to pitch to investors. Initial rounds were held in-house and numbers were reduced until there were just two remaining groups from each school. Victor Capitanu (director of Capital Partners), kindly let us use his boardroom to hold the final pitches, as well as offering his services as one of our Dragons. Other Dragons included Ray Breden (chairman of the BRCC) and Sony Mordechai (successful entrepreneur).

The day was a great success – not least for BSB. Our finalists were the youngest competitors there; Year 7s competing against Year 10, 11 and 12 students! Not only that, but they took the Overall Winner category with their original, inventive and excellently presented Omni-Stylus idea.

Congratulations to all, and thanks once again to our Dragons for making the event such a positive experience for the students.

Secondary Trip to Iceland

BSB making a mark at the bridge between two continents As part of the extended curriculum at BSB we offer the opportunity for our Secondary students to take part in a variety of exciting international trips. This year was no exception as a group of students visited the spectacular country of Iceland. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all and received rave reviews from the students. The main focus of the trip was to discover some of the incredible geographic and scientific wonders Iceland has to offer.

Students went on a variety of excursions including a trek inside the black glacier, a visit to the Gulfoss Geyser, a striking view of the Skogafoss waterfall and a few lucky students even managed to catch a glimpse of the astonishing Northern Lights.

Although there was a major focus on educational excursions, students had plenty of time to relax and experience the leisure activities enjoyed by Icelandic inhabitants for centuries. As well as the once-in-a-lifetime visit to the world famous Blue Lagoon, we spent each evening relaxing in the tranquil open air geothermal spas and swimming pools, which can be found in almost every town and village.

The comments I received from the hotel owner about the students’ attitude, behavior and individual personalities were exceptional. This truly is a testament to the quality of young students we have here at BSB. International school trips are an essential element in a student’s academic and social development and I would strongly encourage students to participate in any future trips offered at BSB.

Royal Patronage

His Royal Highness appreciating one pupil’s essay on saving the planet Midway through the term, BSB was honoured to welcome His Royal Highness Prince Nicholas of Romania to the school, in his role as Patron of the school’s ecological initiative, Planet BSB. His Royal Highness enjoyed a tour of the school with the Head Boy, before a brief musical interlude provided by students and an impressive reading of an essay one pupil had written to express his views on climate change and energy conservation.

As Planet BSB continues to challenge the pupils on all green matters, the High Patronage offered by His Royal Highness to this body is greatly appreciated by the Principal and everyone at BSB.

Teachers participate in Bucharest half-marathon

Exhausted but happy The staff relay on Sports Day was not enough for some teachers at BSB and so on the morning of the 19th May Mr Monaghan, Mr McCrae and Ms Straw braved the heat of the streets of Bucharest to run 21.1 km. They set out to challenge themselves as an example to students of what can be achieved with a little hard work, dedication and training.

It was not an easy run, with the thermometer tipping 31C, a temperature UK dwellers often only dream of. All staff managed to finish in good time and stay hydrated on the course.

BSB teachers are made of strong stuff and less than 24 hours after finishing were back in the classroom on Monday morning regaling students with tales of sprint finishes, the odd blister and not a pulled muscle in sight.

Sports Day

Mr Nastase with the victorious Olt team Just before the long weekend, the entire school took over the Iolanda Balas Soter stadium for the annual BSB Sports Day, featuring the Ilie Nastase Sports Trophy.

The four school Houses, Olt, Mures, Arges and Danube, competed at all ages in a variety of track and field events, as well as some that were more suitable for the younger children.

A sizeable crowd of parents gathered under the very warm spring sunshine and cheered on the efforts of all of the boys and girls.

Well done to all of our young athletes who did their very best on the day but there had to be a winner and the results for 2013 are:

Jack, Y5, 10.65s in the 70m Sprint Jasper, Y3, who broke 2 running records Stand out performance from Secondary was Raphaela, Year 9, who won 4 gold and 1 silver medal and Arges won the staff relay.

BSB Talent Show Triumph

Tudor at the piano The talent show at AISB was an incredible night of entertainment. Seeing the auditorium packed to its 300 capacity with students, parents, and teachers from all the schools, up and dancing at the end of the night was truly a memorable experience an one that those present will remember for many years.

It was a night to be thankful you were not one of the judges, as there were at least 10 outstanding performances last night and I sympathise with the judges for having to decide between a number of acts that really all deserved to receive an award.

However, there can be only one winner and BSB was so proud of Tudor (Y13) who was awarded with the Best Solo Performance for his piano rendition of Pirates of the Caribbean, by Jarrod Radnich.

Well done Tudor and thank you to everyone involved in this magical evening.

CTAIC training Last week I worked for two days with a group of seven Teaching Assistants (TAs) who have roles assisting the Primary School teachers at BSB. These two days were the opening sessions of the first of three modules that the TAs will study in order to achieve the Certificate for Teaching Assistants in an International Context, from the University of Northampton.

We focussed on approaches to supporting children’s speaking and listening skills and reading development. The group was already well informed and experienced, with a strong working knowledge of good practice, so the sessions were very positive and interactive, as we explored how to continue to develop new skills and reflect on practice. The group is now keen to continue

the module using interactive online materials and two assignment tasks which draw upon their classroom experience.

I loved being in Bucharest! My welcome to both the city and BSB was wonderful. Although my stay was short, I did have a little time to explore Lipscani and Dorobanti and made a visit to the fascinating Peasant Museum and gift shop! All my family and friends being treated to decorated eggs!

Here’s how some of the BSB TAs evaluated this development course: The CTAIC course is focused on helping teaching assistants working in an international context. It gives a profound understanding of the National Curriculum, focusing on English and Mathematics.

The first module we have studied was ‘Basic Skills in English in the curriculum’, which I have personally found very interesting. It reinforced some of the learning strategies we were using and helped us to gain a more complex understanding of some others. We have also approached some strategies designed to help us with supporting pupils’ writing skills.

Milena Gugiu I’m attending the CTAIC course in order to develop my knowledge about my job as a Teaching Assistant. I have already started the course and after two sessions I feel ready to discover more and more new skills and to help children’s learning to be more effective. I hope to graduate from the course with a good mark and to use my new learning in my daily activities.

I am looking forward to our summer module, which will concentrate on the Mathematics curriculum!

Alexandra Petraru It was very interesting and we were totally absorbed by the first sessions which focused on the English Curriculum and on the Reading. The course will continue in August with a module on Maths and shall end in October with a third module on educating the international child.

Througout the course we will be given a series of assignments to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. We have access to the University of Northanpton’s extensive library which has been a valuable source of reading materials for us to deepen our knowledge.

Nicoleta Bragadireanu I thoroughly enjoyed the course that I attended, as it offered me many new and exciting ways of teaching and has inspired me and I am now looking forward to putting these into practice in the classroom.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank BSB for not only arranging the course but for the support we are offered from both the staff here and the University of Northampton.

Camelia Danga I mostly like the fact that this course is based on active engagement in various activities. It allows the student, me in this case, an opportunity for personal success in the real experience with children.

We were given a general introduction and we explored different themes relevant to our course. I think it was designed to prepare us to be more perceptive in every child’s need. A variety of theories were discussed as a group regarding different methods and the impact upon the actual learning.

After these meetings I am more aware about the use of the resources, my role in decision making at each child’s level and the way I can manage every moment while teaching children. I am happy to have the opportunity to complete this course and I hope I’ll make the best of it.

CPD As part of BSB’s desire to continuously improve ourselves the whole staff have been working with a new software called BluewaveSwift, which is designed to allow staff to work collaboratively on the School Development Plan (SDP).

School development is a vital part of all schools and this process happens as a continuous cycle. Staff audit their particular area of responsibility and then identify key elements that they seek to improve over the coming year or years. Bluewave is allowing staff to continue this good practice but in a more collaborative manner. It allows us to communicate instantly with other

staff members who are stake holders in the same projects and for us all to see what we are trying to achieve and how far along that path we are. As we continue using this software and continue to train ourselves in bettering our practice we hope that it will help us to improve our ability to work collaboratively and effectively to make BSB even better for our students.

CPD ECIS Conference Berlin April 2013-05-26 The European Council of International Schools is a global membership organisation that provides professional development opportunities to its membership of international schools, individuals and educational organisations.

ECIS is the leading collaborative global network promoting and supporting the ideals and best practices of international education and BSB is proud to be an accredited member.

In my position as Director of Admissions I travelled to Berlin to attend the annual Leadership Conference, joining hundreds of school principals and other senior leadership figures to debate, discover and develop our skills through a series of seminars, workshops and plain old networking.

Amongst the topics covered were the ‘EQ’ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) level required to be an effective admissions professional; telling the story of your school; and the more mundane but no less important subject of handling data and managing the numbers.

I will freely admit there was an element of chest beating among the attendees, with some very definitely of the viewpoint that admissions professionals have for too long been considered of secondary importance to the running of a successful school. Admissions departments are entrusted with registering the required volume of students of course but their value in ensuring that there is a mutual fit between the student, family and school can sometimes be overlooked. And helping a family choose the right school also carries with it a huge amount of responsibility, so having the integrity and confidence to tell a

family that you don’t believe your school is the right one for them is equally as important.

This year was the first time there had been a dedicated Admissions strand, solely aimed at tackling some of the issues that face admissions professionals from around the world. Whilst I am sure many people attended the event even though they thought they knew it all and had seen everything, the overwhelming conclusion at the end of the weekend was that we can all learn something and finding out that there are many varied ways to crack a particular nut certainly gave us all a few things to think about on the flight home and beyond. I am sure that the guidance, help and advice gleaned from Berlin will help me improve both my own performance and that of the admissions process overall.
