elcome to this comprehensive directory of the corporate members of the British Plastics Federation.

It constitutes a showcase of the best of British manufacturing and supply in plastics and related fields.

BPF member firms undergo a rigorous admissions procedure and all the companies listed can be recommended to the global marketplace with confidence.

The UK occupies a special role in the global plastics industry. Arguably it was the birthplace of the industry with the very first commercially available plastics material being made available in 1862 by the Birmingham entrepreneur, Alexander Parkes. It was in the Runcorn laboratories of ICI that Polyethylene was first discovered in 1933. The UK was also one of the first countries to exploit the use of PET for the packaging of carbonated beverages. In 1978 PEEK, the high-performance polymer, was invented in the UK, again by ICI. The UK plastics industry presents many strengths. Its proximity to oil and gas has led to the creation of leaders in polymer production. The varied geology of the UK has provided a base for an enormously wide

range of additives. The UK is home to world class plastics processors and to an impressive array of manufacturers of ancillary equipment.

Additionally, the large number of recyclers in the UK presents a picture of sustainability. These recyclers represent all aspects of the plastics recycling industry from the supply of feedstocks through to the final recapture of products and the use of renewed materials.

The infrastructure supporting the UK plastics industry is second to none. We have front-line university departments; training providers and testing houses and their details can be found in this booklet.

Since its origination, the UK plastics industry has been proud to serve world markets and today the British Plastics Federation regularly exhibits at major industry exhibitions in the UK as well as fairs around the world. We always have a major presence at the triennial K fair in Germany, Chinaplas in China, Plastindia and Plastivision in India and we often exhibit at Plast in Milan.

Plastics in the UK

The UK is the birthplace of plastics, with the first man-made plastic, Parkesine, being patented in 1856.

The UK has a strong chemicals industry that is a highly valued part of the UK’s accessible supply chain. There is an abundance of end markets in the UK, including a world-leading automotive sector as well as a sophisticated and highly evolved retail sector.

Export is also hugely important for the UK plastics industry. It exports plastic products and materials worth £9.6bn each year. Out of the BPF’s members, 80% are exporters. The plastics industry is the UK’s third largest manufacturing sector in terms of employment, with 6,200 companies employing over 182,000 people.

Industry turnover increased since 2010 and is now £27bn. This figure includes manufacturers of raw materials, plastic products, equipment suppliers and recyclers.

In recent years, the UK plastics industry has been shown to be one of the most productive in Europe when benchmarked against the leading five economies. What’s more, productivity is increasing year on year, with the industry continuing to invest significantly in energy-efficient machinery and automation.

A warm welcome awaits you The Horners Livery Company is proud to have been associated with the BPF for over 70 years.

For over 700 years our ancient Livery Company worked on the moulding and shaping of horn, a natural plastic. As the trade in horn diminished it was an obvious progression to adopt the plastics industry in the 1940's. From these early beginnings many of our members have come from the polymer industry.

Through our Polymer Committee and Educational Charity, we support numerous educational projects and design competitions. These aim to encourage students of all ages to take Science/STEM subjects at school and in higher education. Several of these initiatives are in conjunction with the BPF.

The Horners promote good fellowship for members and guests through an active social programme and members can participate in the civic life of the City of London.

We would like to encourage more members from the plastics industry to join us in continuing our City Livery tradition and supporting education and training in our industry.
