Welcome from Jason Brautigam, CEO

Welcome to the LeMieux National Championships as they return to Somerford Park for the third year. Last year’s event was such a resounding success, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from competitors and spectators alike, it’s great to be back here in Cheshire to enjoy the superb facilities this venue has to offer.

We are looking forward to four days of top-class dressage action, whilst it’s also a poignant year as we launch celebrations of 25 year of British Dressage. We’ll be welcoming some special guests to the Fan Zone to mark this occasion, join us throughout the week as we hear from British Dressage greats to reflect on the progress, development and success of our sport over the years.

LeMieux are also in their tenth year of sponsorship, and we’re looking forward to marking this occasion on Friday’s Nationals Welcome Party. All are welcome to join, so please do join us to raise a glass to LeMieux and the National Championships at 6.30pm on Friday in the Pavilion marquee.

We will have masterclasses every day from a multitude of stars. Emma Blundell and Amy Woodhead are joining us on Thursday and Friday to represent the successful relationship between British breeding and home-grown British riding talent too. Four time Olympian Richard Davison is headlining Saturday, before Nations Cup star and showing to dressage success story Louise Bell presents her young horse in Sunday’s session. The masterclasses take place in the LeMieux arena each day, be there to be inspired and take home some great tips to put in to practice in your training.

Over the weekend, we will also be taking the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic achievements of our Senior, Para and Junior teams, who have won an amazing 14 medals between them over the course of the summer. Join us as we salute their achievements!

We are going digital again this year, with free Wi-Fi giving you access to our programme, starter lists, live scoring, and results, as well as the digital programme and BD Nationals Radio. There are QR codes around the site so you can access all the information on your mobiles, while free charging is also available for visitors this year on the BD tradestand.

We’re extremely grateful to LeMieux for their continued title sponsorship, as well as all our class sponsors, partners, and official suppliers. We simply couldn’t put these championships together without their support. We would also like to thank Kelvin Bywater and his team at Show Direct for their fantastic organisation, as well as the King family for generously hosting us here at Somerford Park again.

The BD Board of Directors and team at British Dressage wish the best of luck to everyone over the next four days – from riders, coaches, owners and breeders to judges, writers, scorers and stewards. Whatever part you play, we appreciate your contribution and hope that these championships are successful for you all.

Some summer of sweet success

We review an outstanding season of FEI European Championships.

With the Paris 2024 Olympics just eleven months on the horizon, a record-breaking year for Great Britain couldn’t have come at a better time.

For the first time since London 2012, Britain’s senior team reclaimed the top spot and gold medal at a major championships, as Charlotte Dujardin, Lottie Fry, Carl Hester and Gareth Hughes took the FEI European Championships by storm.

It was no secret that Britain were confident in fielding perhaps the most competitive team since the glory days of Valegro, but few could’ve hoped for such domination in the team competition. On the announcement of the team, British Dressage International Director Judy Harvey commented, “Quite simply this is the ‘dream team’. We have possibly one of the strongest teams we have ever sent to an FEI European Championship. All four riders are medallists, and their horses are a fabulous blend of talent and proven ability. I am very excited to see how they fare; Not only is it a strong team but they will all be in the mix for individual medals too.” Right she was, and as

all four riders delivered world class performances, the medal count reflected the immense ability of the team.

Charlotte Dujardin delivered three personal best performances with Carl Hester and Coral Ingham’s Imhotep; the ten year old son of Van Olst star and Tokyo 2020 team medallist Everdale truly came of age on his visit to Germany, despite beginning the week with travel sickness after a challenging 19 hour journey.

“I came here wanting to enjoy every minute of it and just give our best, I wanted to come out and feel like I did my best and Pete did his best. I’m so proud of him. I think he’s got even more in him, I feel like there’s heaps more to come and next year is going to be so exciting –I think I’ll be able to take the handbrake off and finally ride what he’s got.”

Lottie Fry and Glamourdale secured the gold team medal as the final combination to step forward in the Grand Prix, delivering a personal best in the process, before showing plenty of class in the Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle. Whilst there were no individual medals for the reigning World Championships at this event, Lottie was overjoyed with the effort given by her wow-factor stallion.

For Carl Hester, Riesenbeck was the icing on the cake of a magnificent come back season, as his new dancing partner Fame gave him three rides of his life to produce more personal best results. “I absolutely love this horse, I worship him. I look forward to riding him every

Championship review

day and I just wanted him to be able to do it in a show because I know that he is one of the best horses we have.”

The 13 year old son of Bordeax is owned by Carl Hester’s long term team mate and friend Fiona Bigwood: “I’m so grateful to Fiona for letting me ride him, she always said this was a horse for me and she was absolutely right – it was love at first ride.”

Gareth Hughes was cool and consistent as team pathfinder, and was thrilled with the effort given by his treasured ‘family pony’ Classic Briolinca. Now 17 years old Gareth, Rebecca and Ruby Hughes and Julia Hornig’s evergreen mare has been a firm feature on the British teams, and once again proved her reliability in Riesenbeck.

Five medals for ‘green’ Para team

With two new team faces, three horses making their FEI Championship debut, and four new PBs achieved by superb riding, there was much to celebrate with a bright British line-up who brought home brilliant bronze and a host of individual medals.

Gabby Blake, Sophie Wells, Charlotte Cundall and Georgia Wilson surpassed expectations to secure bronze behind the Netherlands and Germany at the FEI Para Dressage European Championships in Riesenbeck; a wonderful achievement by a quartet who have plenty to look forward to in the future, whilst enjoying the

rewards of the moment.

With the team medal delivered mid-way through the competition in Riesenbeck, it was Georgia Wilson to open Britain’s account on day one under sunny German skies. The young Brit, from North Wales has considerable championship experience having medalled at European (2019), Paralympic (2020) and World Championships (2022), and once again showed her class. At this event it was a glittering duo of silver medals in the Individual and Freestyle competitions, much to Georgia’s delight: “It’s very nice as I’ve always got a bronze on Suki, so it’s nice to finally get a silver with her. I couldn’t be more proud of everybody who’s helped me this year to get back up to these percentages.”

Sophie Wells also completed her week with a silver medal on board her newest star, The Lady Joseph Trust’s seven-year-old Egebjerggards Samoa (St Schufro x Gribaldi). The gifted mare came of age throughout the week, tactfully nursed by Sophie as she’s stepped up to the role of British team horse.

Speaking about her medal winning freestyle, that was originally created by Erin Orford for C Fatal Attraction, Sophie said, “I can’t put it across how much I wanted her to have a positive experience, and she’s definitely finished on a positive experience today. I’m so excited. The minute she’s confident and the minute she’s balanced enough for me to push, she’s going to be amazing.”

“She’s so elegant, and so bouncy with it, then that enhances the music so I think it suits her really well. I love riding to it. When I had it for Jorge for the team test, I thought ‘I need to make it a freestyle at some point’. Erin Orford did the music for me. We had to do it quite last minute, so thank you so much, Erin! And she’s commentating on the Championships [for ClipMyHorse.TV] so hopefully she was pleased with that, and I was pretty much on time!”

Team newcomer Gabby Blake made the debut of dreams with her part-bred Connemara Strong Beau. The duo achieved personal bests across the board and were duly rewarded with a bronze medal in the Grade I Grand Prix A

Championship review

Individual test. It was a close fourth in the freestyle, where Gabby chose to ride to a medley of power-woman pop hits, that closed her week at the championships with so much style. The talented debutante gave plenty of credit to her dancing partner: “This whole week, he has given everything. For his first Championship, he’s like a pro, it’s like he’s done it all his life, He’s never been in an atmosphere like this before, but he’s actually better when there’s a lot going on, so he’s taken to this really well.”

Charlotte Cundall also made her championship debut and delivered an outstanding contribution to the team result, as well as achieving individual personal bests and top five placings with the Veyron Partnerships’ FJ Veyron. “This week has been a dream come true - it’s surpassed all expectations.”

Youth riders make history

In July, Annabella Pidgley became the first rider in British Dressage history to take home the individual accolades at the FEI Young Rider Championships. With her mother Sarah’s

Espe, the elegant rider notched up Individual gold medals for both tests on offer, and brought home a bronze medal for the team, after three stellar efforts by team mates Jessie McConkey, India Durman-Mills and Lily Laughton.

Annabella described her experience as ‘a dream come true to become European Champion’ and said “it was our first Young Rider European Championships and to come away with the first individual Young Rider medal in British dressage history, and that being a gold medal, was quite incredible.”

Pidgley’s partner, the eight year old mare Espe, danced perfectly throughout her time in Pilisjászfalu, Hungary and her young rider was full of praise, “She’s such an incredible mare with a beautiful heart and I’m so grateful to her for being so amazing.”

The medals didn’t stop there as the Juniors completed an incredible year for the British youth riders, showing the exciting strength and depth we have, with the senior medallists of the future already waiting in the wings.

Championship review

The Junior team of Myles Graham, Mette Dahl Ruby Hughes and newcomer Isla Sully each went above and beyond what was expected and secured a historic bronze medal; the second in two consecutive years for the British Junior team.

16 year old Myles Graham went on to complete a memorable week with an individual medal - a well-deserved bronze in the Freestyle competition with Caroline Bell’s dedicated British-bred mare Nibeley Union Hit. It took a personal best achieving performance to secure the accolade in hot competition, as Myles rode to a Johnny English and Formula One themed routing to earn 77.885%. Myles was quick to credit success to his treasured mare and her owners, “Thank you so much Rebecca Bell and Caroline Bell for giving me this opportunity with this special, one in a million mare.”

With fourteen medals secured throughout the summer, we can look back with immense pride and look ahead to what’s to come in 2024 with great excitement and expectations.

Dressage days Kim Ratcliffe

As the popular Radio Nationals returns, we get to know host Kim Ratcliffe.

A trip to the LeMieux National Dressage Championships wouldn’t be complete without the commentary, interviewsand witty repartee provided by the Radio Nationalsduo of Kim Ratcliffe and John Bowen. This has become an integral part of the Nationals experience for many. We were delighted to catch up with Kim, a List 1 Judge, National Para Judge and BDCC Level 3 Coach who also sits on the BD Sport Operations Committee. Kim lives near Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire and, when away from the dressage arena, has a great passion for travel.

Tell us a little about your professional background?

I worked in banking for 27 years and for the last few was a Senior Corporate Manager working with companies who were in trouble

and who owed multi-millions to large groups of institutions. From 1990 onwards I used up all of my holiday allowance training to become a judge. I went overseas to watch the best, as standards weren’t as high in the UK as they are now, and went from List 6 to List 1 in 10 years. After taking redundancy in 2001, I started training dressage riders and took my UKCC Level 3 as I love learning. I started Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) training whilst still at the bank. It’s helped me to understand the different ways riders think and learn, so they can understand themselves and their personal styles better to enhance their learning. I’ve also been working with David Sanders of Neuromechanics Academy as I want to help riders maximise their riding for the benefit of the horse.

Who or what inspired your love of dressage?

5y fi rst mentor was Inger Bryant, a List 1 Swedish judge and trainer who really understood horses and how our interactions with them can help or hinder their performance. The first horse that really inspired me was Marzog ridden by Anne Grethe Jensen. He was a very supple and exciting horse with a quiet, balanced rider.

Your best Radio Nationals anecdote!

There’s been plenty – mostly me being the subject of John’s banter! I was re-named Cougar Kim after I took a few photos of a well-known male rider (I’ll spare his blushes), but I had off ered to do that for his sponsor, who liked some photos I’d taken of him in France at WEG, so it was very innocent! The Nationals always coincides with my birthday, and one year I was being treated to a glass or two of champagne by the very generous Anna Ross when Carl Hester popped into the studio and nicknamed us ‘the lushes’!

How and when did you first take your position behind the mic?

I was invited to commentate first around 25 years ago at the Nationals, and then at the European Championships at Hickstead in 2003.

Emile Faurie

Which travel destinations remain on your bucket list?

There’s plenty! I’m hoping to get to Borneo, Sri Lanka and South Africa this year. I’d love to go to Canada and also the Silk Road but probably not yet, given the instability in the region, especially as I was hijacked in Mexico and lost all my luggage – but that’s a long story. I’ve been very lucky, having been to places as diverse as Mongolia, Brazil and Antarctica. There’s still plenty of places to see in India and Africa and I like to vary between cultural and wildlife tours.

Our masterclasses

Look ahead to four days of fascinating masterclasses hosted in the LeMieux Arena.

Thursday and Friday at the Nationals (14 & 15 September) will be headlined by Emma Blundell and Amy Woodhead as we explore the relationship between breeder and rider. Mount St John Stud are one of the country’s leading lights when it comes to championing British breeding, and owner Emma Blundell has dedicated her career, passion, and drive into building a business that has contributed much to the sector, with pioneering technology and a host of homebred stars.

Emma’s partnership with Amy Woodhead has seen a new era of success for the stud, which already boasts an impressive winning record; the team recently presented MSJ Viva Dannebrog at the WBSFH FEI World Breeding Championships, achieving 13th place in the first round and 4th place in the small final, narrowly missing a place in the ultimate final by the smallest of margins. Amy herself brings a wealth of talent and experience from years of dedication spent honing her craft, including a stint spent with BD’s Honorary Patron and dressage maestro Carl Hester.

At the weekend we’ll be joined by a true legend of the game in four-time Olympian Richard Davison, who will host a masterclass in the LeMieux Arena on Saturday afternoon (16 September). Richard has been a key member of the team across three decades, competing in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008 and London 2012, as well as multiple European and World Championships, most recently with his Grand Prix partner Bubblingh as part of the bronze medal winning team in Herning last year.

Outside of the saddle, Richard has been an instrumental figure in the development of the sport, acting as British Olympic Dressage Team Captain, Board Member for the Global Dressage Forum, and taking on several different roles within the FEI. There’s no doubt that spectators joining us on Saturday will be treated to world-class insight by one of the sport’s most influential figures.

Bell will take centre stage on Sunday afternoon (17 September), as we take a closer look at a young horse with a special connection to BD’s 25th anniversary celebrations. After enjoying a day of Young Horse competition, spectators can hear Louise talk through young horse training with ‘Peaky Blinder’ – her up and coming star, sired by none other than Carl Hester’s London 2012 hero Utopia.

Louise herself has also made waves on the international stage, representing Great Britain as a regular member of Nations Cup teams with her high-profile ride Into The Blue, who competes in the Grand Prix competition over the Nationals weekend. One of the most popular riders in our senior ranks, this leading lady of British Dressage is sure to deliver a masterclass debut to remember, so we’re looking forward to hearing her share top tips from her abundant expertise.

Visit the LeMieux arena at 15.15 on Thursday and Friday, 16.05 on Saturday and 15.55 on Sunday to enjoy the Masterclasses.

Freestyle guide Getting it right

From the grassroots to Grand Prix dressage to music has long proved a highlight with spectators and freestyles return to the LeMieux Nationals this year with a top line up of talent in the Fairfax Saddles Prix St Georges Freestyle Gold, Saracen Horse Feeds Intermediate I Freestyle Gold and show finale Kudos Grand Prix Freestyle Gold Championships.

Freestyles require combinations to perform a sequence of compulsory movements ordered by the competitor, showing off paces in perfect synchronisation with music which complements the horse’s performance.

It’s often said that judging freestyle is more challenging than a standard test as not only do judges mark the movements, which are not in a set order, but they also have to assess the artistic nature of the test.

There’s few better than FEI 5* Peter Storr, freshly returned from judging at the FEI World Championships, to talk us through how to get this tricky balance of technicality and artistry right.

“I look for good choreography, with symetrical patterns and movements repeated equally on both reins,” Peter said starting with the all important floorplan element of freestyle production, “innovative and different lines that enhance the movements of the horse and rider are also a benefit.”

The floorplan, where riders choose to place movements, contributes to one of the artistic marks in freestyle judging - degree of difficulty. This mark takes into account the level of difficulty and calculated risk - the balance between challenge and success. “Degree of difficulty has its place but often it can be given too much importance,” Peter replied in assessment of this element, “I’ve been finding that too many riders try to make the degree of difficulty too high and putting to much emphasis on just one of the artistic collectives. Lots of riders make floorplans that are too difficult which they’re then unable to perform correctly - the most important thing is that they ride the

movements well in order to get high technical marks for the movements.”

Whilst degree of difficulty is often the artistic element we’re drawn to, and given most knowledge of when watching TV coverage of major events. It’s important to remember the others too, rhythm, energy and elasticity, harmony between horse and rider, choreography, music and interpretation of the music.

As Peter explains, “at the end of the day, degree of difficulty comes into it but it’s one mark.”

Music is often what captivates freestyle spectators from all walks of life and Peter assessed the importance of this element from the judge’s point of view. “Music is important. The first thing is the music must fit the footfalls of the horse in the corresponding pace - the walk is four beat, the canter is three beat and the trot is two beat. How strong the beat is is personal preference but it should correlate to the rhythm of the pace. I think in the music and interpretation of the music it’s also about how the music changes from one pace to another, does the hrose and rider walk when the walk music starts? Or are they late to make the transition in time to the music? It’s all about being in time with your music choices too.

If a rider finishes early on the centre line, they halt, salute and the music keeps going - as a judge I have to take this into account when rewarding

A winning freestyle is good choreography, good music, good harmony, a good way of going and performing the movements in a very good to excellent way.

the music mark. Even if you love the music personally, it’s the details that make the difference and we have to amend our marks accordingly.”

An eye for detail also reaps rewards: “We’re also looking for music fitting movements. Crescendos for extensions, changes for the pirouettes, looking to see if the rider is riding to a programme instead of droning music in the background. It makes such a difference to the overall impression.”

Personal preference comes into account too, from both the rider and the judge perspectives, Peter offered words of wisdom into how to achieve the right balance between enjoying what you choose to ride to and looking for good marks, “you also have to cater to the judges too as well as your own personal tastes...you might love club music for your trot work but it’s worth considering who’s sitting in the judges box at the end of the arena too.”

“Internationally the standard is very high,” Peter concluded talking about the his views on the current standard of dressage to music, “we saw some very high level freestyle to music tests at the world championships. There were some very difficult tests really well executed within the standard of the movements.”

Peter’s three five star top tips for achieving the perfect freestyle to music test

Choose simple, symetrical choreography for your floor plan.

Design your freestyle around achieving the highest technical marks possible for your horse and the movements.

Choose fitting music that suits your horse and enhances the paces and not necessarily your personal favourite songs.

We look forward to seeing the same, closer to home at Somerford Park for the LeMieux National Championship freestyle titles.
