What’s hot and what’s not in the used-motorcycle world
DEMAND STILL STRONG
This month we focus on the fastest selling used bikes during the period 1st April to 12th June, based on the median number of days the bikes were on site and allowing a minimum of 10 observations in order for a bike to qualify for the list.
As ever, we have a raft of scooters and 125s in the top 30, taking nearly half the positions, with a variety of bike styles and ages making up the remainder.
The overall average number of days to sell for all used bikes during May was 28 days, a full 12 days fewer than it took in May 2019. In May 2020 the number of days stretched out to 73 days, but with it being such an unusual year it’s not really comparable.
So, the demand for used motorcycles is still very strong with bikes flying out of the door, and this has caused the average price of a used bike listed on Auto Trader to increase by 8% compared to May 2019.
Overall, 19 million minutes were spent searching for bikes on Auto Trader in May. To put that into context, it’s the equivalent of one person browsing bikes, 24 hour hours a day for 36 years!
Honda’s mini marvel Monkey bike was the fastest-selling bike on AutoTrader in May

WARM WEATHER, HOT DEMAND
ALMOST TWO MONTHS HAVE passed since dealers began reopening across the UK as Lockdown-3 restrictions eased, and the bounce-back that the market experienced initially, shows little sign of slowing down.
Some dealers have reported selling in excess of 60 new and used machines (combined) per month. It is likely that low availability and long lead times for new machines will boost used demand further throughout the summer.
Demand is strong across the board with Triumph and Japanese brands particularly sought after. As has been the trend in recent years, sports machines are the least popular but a market for them still remains.
Auction hammer prices remain strong
SUMMER HAS FINALLY ARRIVED, LOCKDOWNS ARE lifting, and the roads are full of motorcycles as riders get out and enjoy life on two wheels once again. We’re seeing an associated growth in traffic as people start thinking about their next purchase.
Honda remains the most popular manufacturer in MCN’s Bikes for Sale section, boasting four models in the top five spots – the CB500X and NC750X allrounders are first and second respectively, with the venerable VFR800 and feisty Fireblade taking fourth and fifth. Yamaha’s R1 superbike splits the Hondas in third position.
Naked bikes remain the most popular in both Bikes for Sale and our expert reviews, in both cases followed by sports and adventure bikes.
The three most popular new bike reviews were all very powerful nakeds – the BMW S1000R, Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS and Aprilia’s Tuono V4 – while the Honda NC750X was the most popular used review, followed by the Ducati Hypermotard 950 and Royal Enfield’s Interceptor 650.

STOCK
Stock shortages continue to be the main challenge for the industry with little sign that will improve anytime soon. Long lead times for new machines are delaying partexchanges and while some dealers took some in early, they have now sold. As a result, competition within auction channels remain very high, with strong hammer prices. RIDING CONDITIONS
May was a cool and wet month, with late spring sunshine in short supply. However, the weather in the early weeks of June has seen a vast improvement with largely warm and sunny conditions, making for fine riding conditions once again as the summer solstice nears.
Taking into consideration ongoing strong market activity and stock shortages, values have been moderately increased across most sectors in Glass’s July edition, except where trade feedback or evidence from the marketplace indicated models required specific adjustments.
