Located in the urban setting of Málaga, Spain, the project site is home to a remarkable library that serves as a hub for socialization, research, and community interaction. Designed to cater to the diverse needs of residents and visitors alike, this library offers a welcoming space for individuals of all ages and backgrounds From children seeking knowledge and inspiration to professionals seeking resources for their work, and from staff members facilitating a seamless experience to adults seeking a place to connect with others, this library embraces inclusivity and aims to foster a sense of belonging within the community.
A large portion of the Málaga population heavily depends on walking or biking as their primary means of transportation due to the close proximity of the main attractions. Moreover, the metro/train is frequently utilized for longer distances within the city With this in mind, my primary objective in design is to create a structure that not only provides storage for books and reading, but also serves as an inviting green area where pedestrians can take a break, unwind, socialize, and enjoy their walk.
The Málaga public library serves as an essential link within the city, connecting pedestrians to valuable resources and services

The creation of the design took into consideration the key concepts of Open space, Greenery, and Pedestrian Network These conceptual terms were the foundation for the development of the design, ensuring that the space would prioritize ample open areas, natural elements such as vegetation, and a well-connected network of pathways for pedestrians. By keeping these factors in mind, the design aimed to create a harmonious and inviting environment that would provide both aesthetic appeal and functional accessibility for all users

By elevating the structure, the ground level is left open for use as an extension of the city and pedestrian network The sunken reading pit and seat steps off er a place for people to gather and appreciate the greenery around them. Additionally, children can enjoy a range of obstacle courses, such as rock climbing and hanging monkey bars. The area can also be used as a public event space for concerts, conferences, and other events.
The spaces required are divided according to their purposes and usage. The first level is devoted to public spaces, where louder conversations and noise are acceptable.
Each level’s program is similarly designed, with utilitarian and serene spaces arranged at the back of the building, while the front offers access to more social areas. The division of spaces can be further broken down into smaller sections. The perimeter walls were specifically designed for the purpose of storage.

To ensure that natural light illuminates the entire library, an opening has been incorporated above the main circulation area. This will enable the light to radiate from the circulation area into all the other sections of the library, ensuring that the entire interior is well lit with natural light. The staircase is constructed using a perforated metal material, enabling the filtration of light to illuminate both the ground level and sunken pit area

The urban library incorporates various sustainable strategies to reduce CO2 emissions and lower its carbon footprint Malaga is classified as a temperate climate zone and designing for the climate is essential when producing a sustainable building. Malaga has four distinct seasons with minimal or no extreme climatic events. Summer is typically warm, but not extremely hot, for extended periods of time.
To reduce heating loads, passive solar strategies are implemented throughout the design. The floor plan is organized so winter sun penetrates into daytime use spaces with specific functions that coincide with solar orientation Solar glazing faces the south to maximize winter sun exposure. Designing the central circulation as a sunspace will heat itself and adjacent spaces in winter. Additionally, using specific materials such as high mass surfaces will absorb and store daytime solar heat in winter for release at night and will give cooler summer nights. Geothermal energy is implemented beneath ground to provide radiant floor cooling and heating

To enhance the overall experience, the library integrates circadian lighting and active design elements into its layout, incorporating outdoor pathways, bike facilities, and amenities. It encourages physical activity through the inclusion of inviting staircases, centralized amenities, and flexible furniture. Moreover, the library establishes connected walking and cycling routes and creates multifunctional open spaces. To promote the well-being of its occupants, the library also incorporates vegetation buffers and biophilic design, recognizing the positive impact of nature on mental and physical health.

The library has been intentionally designed to minimize its reliance on mechanical systems for heating, cooling, and lighting, resulting in lower energy consumption and the ability to function without power. This approach also reduces the need for fossil fuels by incorporating passive solar strategies and a geothermal energy system into the design.
By keeping the floor plan open and furnishing it with movable furniture, the library becomes highly flexible and adaptable to future needs and evolving markets.
