pride 2015

welcome Well here we are! A year’s gone by very quickly and I’m excited to welcome you to Bristol Pride 2015. We’ve got lots of fun, exciting and engaging events that use The Arts and our culture to showcase the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community and to promote equality, for all. To shout loudly and proudly We Are: Here. Without dwelling on the fact we were unsuccessful in gaining any core funding but it makes it a very tough job to make Pride happen. However we’re tenacious, our volunteers hard-working and with support from our sponsors, supporters and you the public I am very proud of this year’s event. Great events in the week, a bigger more visible Parade March and our biggest line-up to date on Pride Day plus we’ve managed to keep Pride Day a donation entry event. Please get a Pride Supporter Ticket if you can. For just £5 they get you discounted bar, food & skate hire prices plus FREE Pride Day travel on First Buses, an absolute bargain. We also offer £15 Day+Night passes which include the official Pride afterparty at the O2 and free entry to the Queenshilling. Most importantly you’re helping make Pride happen and supporting our 2015 charity, LGBT Domestic Violence organisation, Broken Rainbow. Pride is still needed, you need only look at hate crime stats, workplace bullying and even challenges to equal rights happening around the world. We work all year round to challenge this discrimination and will continue to do so, look out for our Hate Crime campaign launching in August. This year I also want to remember all those who have worked hard to get us where we are today. But for now, welcome to what remains one of the best and only free Pride events in the UK and our week of celebrations including award winning film festival, comedy night headlined by Zoe Lyons, our new GaYming event and of course the Pride dog show. Have a fantastic Pride everyone! Daryn J Carter Festival Director and Programmer

Opening the festival this year we are very excited to be screening In The Turn, a brilliant sassy and poignant must see documentary. After being denied the right to join local athletics teams due to her gender, Crystal and her mum serendipitously discover the Vagine Regime, an international queer collective of roller derby players. pride launch party

Help us celebrate the launch of Bristol Pride 2015 Life is a cabaret old chum, so come to the cabaret! Celebrate as we transport you back to 1930s Berlin in our special underground cabaret bar. In the 1920s to early 1930s Berlin was a liberated hotbed as artists from around the world all arrived to witness and experience the wild erotic sexual freedom along with curiosity seekers, voyeurs, and… homosexuals. You join us in 1931 where everything is changing. The gin is cold and the piano is hot as we bring you cabaret and jazz inspired performances through the night with our own flamboyant, amoral mistresses, pineapples and workshops from Bristol Swing Festival… but shhh! swing tanzen ist verboten. Be our canvas and dress up: think hedonistic, androgyny, swing kids, flappers, short skirts but more importantly forget the outside world and be yourself. A word with GMB’s Jeff

Your tips for being out in the workplace You don’t have to wear a badge! Just be yourself and if asked about your sexuality admit it, if you feel you can.

Why is it important to GMB to support Pride?

Tell us more about GMB Union GMB was formed in 1889 and has nearly 700k members. The Country is split into nine Regions with Bristol part of Wales and the West. The membership is split by three work areas, Commercial, Manufacturing and Public Services. I am the President of Avon and Wessex Public Services Branch which covers Bristol, South Gloucester, BANES and North Somerset. As well as supporting our members in the workplace we also are involved in national campaigns such as, The Living Wage, Bedroom Tax, Black listing of workers and LGBT issues, which has its own campaign group: GMB SHOUT!

Are people still experiencing homophobia, transphobia and biphobia at work? Yes – it’s not all about name calling, times have changed and discrimination can be far more subtle, being passed over for promotion, not invited to social activities and bring treated differently by work mates.

What should they do if they are? Don’t retaliate! If they are in a UNION seek help from them. Make detailed notes of what’s happened, if you have supportive colleagues ask them if they will be a witness for you and speak to the HR Department. If Management don’t support you contact ACAS to mediate on your behalf and if all else fails seek legal advice.

pride gmb interview

You don’t have to wear a badge! Just be yourself, if asked about your sexuality admit it, if you feel you can. We have the right to live life as the person we are, but not the right for everyone to like us for that.

Lastly what was your first Pride? What are you looking forward to this year? London, when it was in Kennington Park, as part of Lambeth Labour group I organised an evening event at Lambeth Town Hall. I hope to see more people support a fantastic event and the goodwill generated create a better climate for us all.
